I'm new to the zaregoto series, i just watched the anime and got obsessed with Jun and i want to see more of her, i head that theres a LN with her as a protagonist, can i read it without reading the other volumes? If yes then whats the name of this LN?
Hey, I love Aikawa Jun too! The LN series you're talking about is called the Saikyou Series (Strongest Series). It's wonderful. It's one of my favorite parts of the Zaregoto Series. I mean my profile picture is from it, even. The art Take has done for it is stunning.
Tumblr media
But no, you shouldn't read it before reading Zaregoto. The biggest reason being that it's set years after the main series itself and requires a lot of context for her. If you really care about her character, I wouldn't recommend it until after the Zaregoto Series because a lot of the meaningful moments with her won't be as impactful. Another reason you can't really read it is that it's mostly untranslated. However, what has been translated can be found on @mirroredtranslations ! Please go read Zaregoto, Jun is very much involved in it and it's one of the reasons I've come to love her so much. She's also featured in other spin-offs like the Ningen Series (Human Series) which has a few manga that adapt parts of it (Ningen Shiken and Ningen Knock) Official English translations for the series as a whole are mostly missing but fans have translated some of it: You can find Zaregoto volumes 1-9 translated in English on here (make sure you're starting from Vol 1, the site shows Vol 4 first) Some of Saikyou Series on here And if you're curious about the few Ningen Series LNs which don't feature Jun but are fan translated: Vol 1, Vol 3 chapter 3, Vol 7 Ningen Series manga: Shiken and Knock The Ningen Series is all over the timeline and focuses on the Zerozaki family in the Zaregoto universe, but Knock features Jun in her teenage years. So Knock is more of a prequel, but still requires context from Zaregoto proper.

Very long answer but I hope it helps!

is there a character from another anime that you think it would be good for Nadeko Sengoku to make friends with?
i was mulling this one over for a while bc nadeko is quite reclusive and introverted, for lack of a better word. i think aikawa jun should show up and give her some advice every once in a while. a mentee mentor type things. nadeko needs a good guiding figure who isnt as.... like that as the monogatari adults are. aikawa is bombastic enough to carry the convo and responsibility and could impart good words. and they can have a nice wholesome vibe going on. ill go with that

Kimi no Yokogao (Your Profile)
youtube
Original song by Maeda Jun and Yanagi Nagi
Based on a translation by moonsnow
wuh woh mari got addicted to another gacha and it's all her indonesian bestie's fault.
this game is depressing btw if the fact the guy who wrote it also wrote Clannad and Angel Beats didn't tip you off
anyways here's the translation. more! jump! more! hasn't been taken out back just yet i just have severe undiagnosed adhd
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Far from the place where I was born My soul cried out for home Adrift amongst the seas and storm Washed up on the cove
Head spinning, it's a blur to me Mind clouded by fog Yet still, my world’s topsy-turvy Even standing strong
Look and you’ll see Reflecting in my eyes A lost-and-found Perspective on the meaning of life
Ticking down, ticking down, as the time passes by I endure through the “now”, as a mere passer-by If the future is nil, then I can't be upset Since I can't help it, it's my helplessness*
Raining down, raining down, a storm ceaseless to calm Violently pouring down on this man-cladden rock Yet among all the roars and the pounding torrent I hear somehow, a love-filled ballad
Those tears streaming down Softening my cheeks I gently wipe it now The profile of your voice**
For peace the beating hearts will bleed When spears are our shield*** Hearing the contradiction ring I threw what I wield
I scrub until the stains are gone Yet it won't wash away That grimy coloration from blood, sweat, fear, and pain
Look and you’ll see Slashing through my eyes Deep in the wound Are the sins I carried throughout my life
Blowing on, blowing on, the wind passes me by And the days passing on quickly blur in my eyes Hurry up, hurry up, I search urgently on In the wake of a timeless eternity
Leaving it all behind, all of my rationale The mob passed on through and they drowned my voice out Like a flash, then I knew that I was by myself Choking alone in dark seas full of doubt
Those tears streaming down Softening my cheeks Reminding me of now The profile of your voice
I won't cry anymore!
Ticking down, ticking down, as the time passes by I endure through the “now”, as a mere passer-by If the future is nil, then I can't be upset Since I can't help it, it's my helplessness
Raining down, raining down, a storm ceaseless to calm Snow and hail beating down, make me weak to the touch Yet among all the roars and the pounding torrent I hear somehow, a love-filled ballad
Those tears streaming down Softening my cheeks I gently wipe it now The profile of your voice
Those tears streaming down Softening my cheeks Reminding me of now The profile of your voice
The profile of your voice The profile of your voice The profile of your voice The profile of your voice The profile of your voice The profile of your voice The profile of your voice I fear that I’ll lose it now… --------------------------------------------------------------------
Notes:
I struggled to make this line flow well while retaining the meaning. What's actually being said here is along the lines of “I can’t rely on tomorrow since i’m always nervous and hesitant”- I ended up taking a somewhat flowery approach to portraying this line and while in my mind, it still comes across closely enough, I can understand finding this line to be an overly nihilistic interpretation. I don't even know if it's really worth making this note, but I figured I’d address it just to cover my bases.
These lines and the subsequent variations seem vague and up to interpretation. While I personally interpret it as the narrator reminiscing on a past loved one, hence the first person pronouns, some translations place it in the second person, as if the narrator is wiping someone else’s tears, or they keep the ambiguity and frame the lines in the third person. Additionally, the line simply translates as “that profile”, leaving it vague if the narrator is referring to a person’s physical form or a more abstract descriptor. I elaborated on this based on my interpretation in order to maintain the song’s flow. If you wish to cover this song with alterations, this line would likely be the best place to look if you want to adjust things to fit your own interpretation.
The kanji 矛 (spear) and 盾 (shield) together form 矛盾 (contradiction). I thought of ways to portray this wordplay in English, but ultimately decided a more direct translation of the meaning would be the best option, even if it doesn't quite carry the same weight. Additionally, I rearranged these lines a bit for flow.

in general a lot of the sort of things about just transplanting a cast to college etc come off strangely to me. not to say the notion can't be compelling (and AUs/fanworks etc I have endless respect for), but when that sort of thing's what you're doing... it's a different story. like, the individual fictional work has changed to a different one. that's okay, but it
similar to an extent is also the idea of 'saving' a character from their source material. i get the emotional appeal of it (who doesn't want to sometimes?) but the context that builds them up is at least typically rooted in other characters and the setting and so forth
what do you make of the accusation that some manga/anime/VNs only have a high school setting because that's viewed as being more marketable even if the high school parts add little to the story/characters/lore etc?
kind of trivially correct i suppose, obviously a big portion of the audience for this media is highschoolers and people around the age where highschool is considered important. although i'd say another big influence is just that other stories use highschools a lot so it becomes a common setting in the same way isekai has
'even if the high school parts add little to the story' is an odd way of framing it to me, though. the thing it adds is that the story is set in a highschool. presumably if it wasn't set in a school it would be in some other location, but is there a reason to believe that location would be better integrated into the story than a school setting?
im sure there are some stories where the school seems very superfluous or shoehorned in, but generally speaking the 'point' of the school is obvious - it communicates the time of life the characters are experiencing, a liminal space between childhood and adulthood. it's a pretty reasonable setting for stories that deal with coming of age, first love, or rebellion against authority

Danganronpa fancast blog!!
I'm making intros for all the characters, but for now, just have this! Rules are the same with most roleplay blogs. Mod is a minor, so no blatant NSFW, though the occasional joke/implication/innuendo is alright. Here's a list of the characters. You also don't HAVE to roleplay if you want to interact!
You could just interact like normal, with mod or with the characters!

i'm not familiar with Nisioisin having done that before; where does it come up?
I meant generally in a sense (not quite a full love story in context) but like, zaregoto 1, with Aikawa Jun and gay sex island. As nisio fans it’s like an open secret but Aikawa Jun was described masculinely as an assist to convey feelings towards her as romantic in book one but when being revealed as a woman it doesn’t take away from the romantic attraction to woman thing.
Though Aikawa herself isn’t described as sapphic in the novel, it plays on a similar concepts due to other character’s reactions to her. Less of using the tropes of obscured gender to heighten romantic tension as a main plot but as a side aspect of the setting, in that I think it’s similar, though not the same.
It certainly says something about nisio that he’s done something like this trope more than once.
Even if his first use of said plot point wasn’t actually the main plot of zaregoto 1 (don’t go into it thinking it’s a big yuri adventure, it’s about a mental illness guy, there is a bit of yuri but what’s most important is a mental illness guy)

Here’s a quicker version of himikos backstory like I promised
Himikos birth name was Akatani Shinamoru which yes again is the same as another oc but that’s why she changed her name later on
When Himiko was born her parents hated her and abused her
Then when she was five she was diagnosed as quirkless
After that her parents became more abusive
The only light in her life was her friend, Jun Hano
Her and Jun planned to run away together on her half birthday and start their life anew
They were gonna rename themselves as Mei and Tei
But the night before her fifth and a half birthday himikos parents brought someone over to the house
That someone referred to himself as the doctor
Then the doctor killed her parent’s, lit her house on fire, and kidnapped her
She was experimented on for a year and a half
Throughout that year her hair turned white
Her right eye glowed a brighter blue
And her left eye turned white
She also gained three quirks, a teleportation quirk, a regeneration quirk, and an intelligence quirk
Roughly six months into her being stuck with the doctor he stopped the experimentation and started training her
She was taught taekwondo karate and jieitaikakutōjutsu then formed her own fighting style from what she learned
After the year and a half she escaped but ended up being kidnapped again by someone else
This someone else name was Jin Takahashi
Jin ran a fighting ring where villains could fight with each other either with or without quirks
But Jin would also kidnap people and force them into fights to the death
Jin ended up putting Himiko into this fighting ring and she was forced to fight to the death with both adults and kids alike
She was stuck there for three years from age seven to ten and a half
Throughout those three years she was fighting almost every day
She had been forced into so many fights to the death that she had been forced to kill 685 people
But eventually heroes and police found out about this fighting ring and took it down arresting dozens of villains and Jin
But after three years of Himiko being made to fight Jin had constantly told her that if she tried to run she would simply be arrested for killing so many people
So she ran. Himiko then tried to turn her life around by changing her name and calling herself Mei Himiko
She went to the library often and taught herself everything she missed out on learning and more
She learned over ten languages, two types of sign language, and up to college level math, reading, writing, science, history, and more.
After six months of constant study along with hacking into police files to make it seem as though Mei Himiko had always existed and was just another eleven year old who was homeschooled
But also at eleven she decided to try and use her fighting capabilities for good rather than evil and she became the vigilante known as shadow
But eventually after three years she allowed herself to be caught and ended up in a vigilante reform program, she was also adopted by either aizawa or another oc of mine name Rena Itsika
She was also enrolled into class 1a of the UA hero course and is now training to become a hero!
Yay you all finally have her backstory though tbh it’s ever changing
Also here’s five fun facts about my au!
1: both Shinsou and kaminari are adopted by aizawa and were actually rescued from their bio parents by shadow and aizawa!
2: Nezu has an adopted child who’s name is Ichiro Aikawa and they go by they/them pronouns, they weren’t rescued by shadow tho
3: I ship erasermic so they are married!
4: due to me reading a lot of fanfics I have come to love midnight so she is a bit more child friendly in this au and her outfit looks like that because of her quirk coming out of her skin! She also totally a mom friend and is super sweet
5: I hate m!neta so instead of him being in class A we have Shinsou!
And that’s all the fun facts I have! Hope you have a lovely day, and my phone is on six percent so I gotta go plug it in! Bye!

In Wazamonogatari, the novel, Deathtopia's gender is actually obscured until the end in order to play up the more romantic aspects. It's something that's hard to accomplish visually, but the anime did a great job at playing it up in other ways Nisio actually did the same thing in his very first book. Both Wazamonogatari & Zaregoto 1 share the most obvious sapphic subtexts. Both feature women who are unable to live normally in society with "saviors" that Nisio tricks the audience into believing are men until the very end. A bit unfortunate that the Zaregoto anime ruins the reveal by showing us Aikawa Jun from the start, but more Aikawa Jun is not something I'd ever complain about

ccan i be crazy for a second as a Detective Media Consumer
Tumblr media
this post actually drives me nuts and normally i'd be like whatever everyone on the internet uses hyperbole but op clearly doesn't know much about the genre or archetype and the fact that a bunch of people who also don't know a lot about the genre agree with them is a littleee aggravating likeeeee
while they aren't wrong that plenty of fictional detectives are affiliated with law enforcement most of them are not
arguably the most influential ones aren't affiliated with law enforcement and hate cops, not just sherlock holmes
'all of them should be weirdos about-' they are. they are amateurs who enjoy mystery solving.
it's worth noting -- bc op brings up holmes in the tags of their og post -- that holmes popularizes the fictional detective archetype and that's why many of them are actually not police detectives
let's look at a few of them
philo vance: famously hated by the police, messes with investigations for fun
john dickson carr's gideon fell: another amateur detective, also annoys tf out of the police
edogawa rampo's akechi kogoro: literally a college student with a hobby (sound familiar?) who often runs circles around and deceives the police to get culprits off the hook when he feels like it
soji shimada's kiyoshi mitarai: an astrologer and college professor who gets brought cases by his crime enthusiast boyfriend, hates the police and nearly gets arrested by an officer for being disrespectful
seishi yokomizo's kosuke kindaichi: another amateur sleuth who's often underestimated by police investigators
yukito ayatsuji's kiyoshi shimada: a buddhist monk who solves mysteries part time because he's a mystery enthusiast
nisioisin's iichan: literal college student, solves mysteries because he happens to be there
nisioisin's jun aikawa: a freelancer in many fields who isn't solely a 'detective,' but isn't tied to any one organization or agency
etc etc etc
like yeah there are many detectives who are even p.i's that are often affiliated with or working with the police (L from death note, shawn spencer, etc) to act like they're typically written or portrayed like a cop character is so...??
when. a very clear, defining facet of the archetype is that they aren't part of the police force. and it's usually because these stories often feature officers as their culprits. like. .
not to mention that many of these characters are also meant to solve their crimes in unconventional ways, apart from the bureaucratic methods of a crime scene investigator - again they are Guys With a Hobby they're Mystery Enthusiasts and i'm sure a lot of authors find more freedom writing a private investigator than a cop because cops are supposed to wrap things up a certain way. they're supposed to be aiming for arrests. sometimes a detective doesn't want to do that. sometimes they want to solve the crime, lie to the police, and get the culprit off the hook bc they know the truth and don't think that the culprit deserves to get jailed and they dgaf if that's "right" or "wrong" in the eyes of the system
like i do think that a lot of more 'mainstream' media like criminal minds or CSI or whatever do portray a very different sort of detective but traditionally your fictional detective is a private investigator and their stories usually mandate that the police are incompetent, corrupt, etc in order to benefit the amateur sleuth who usually has poor rapport with them
it's definitely rarer to find detective media where zero cops are involved, i get it, but i think it's crazy to completely ignore that the entire genre originated from and is built off the backs of guys who cannot mind their own business to save their lives

Indigo in Blue
youtube
Original song by Maeda Jun and Yanagi Nagi
Based on a translation by moonsnow
i might be addicted...eheh...i wanna do white spell next....
"this blog will mostly be vocaloid translyrics" - mari, lying as naturally as she breathed
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ah, Lock and load* Let azure Fade away Keep on Dyeing This skyline Deep blue**
Sharp shards of glass Flying through space Pierce through my cheeks Grazing my face and Making me think All of the same Everything will break in pieces*** Losing it all Even your touch My resolve Has never seemed to grow so faint
Now, you’ll shatter! To live without you
I know You know, I’m a broken tool And why? Are even my thoughts a lie?
Ah, Let the sea Roaring on Resound And thus Let the waves Raging on Splash down
Brightly those lights Shine onto me While in the glow It’s time to focus I breathe in deep Take in the air Open my eyes See how I fall In but a glance I know what to do To reach the ground Measure quick my velocity
The final blow- Delivered to you
I know You know, I’m just a blind fool And why? Go through hell with no respite?
Ah, Lock and load Let all love Fade away And let These flowers Scatter in Indigo
Sharp shards of glass Flying through space Pierce through my cheeks Grazing my face and Making me think All of the same All that I am breaks in pieces Losing it all Even your smile Time and space Have never seemed to glow so faint
Brightly those lights Shine onto me While in the glow It’s time to struggle I choke and fight Burn in the air Closing my eyes Feel how I fall With just a hunch I know what to do To reach my fate Contemplate and bide my time
Now, you’ll shatter! To live without you
I know You know, I’m a broken tool And why? Is even your voice a lie?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ALSO, since I cannot find a transcription, much less a translation of the background vocals, I tried to transcribe them myself. I'm 99% sure these are wrong, and I can't tell if it's actual japanese or just gibberish, so I'm just gonna put them here as is instead of trying to translate them, hopefully they at least help you if you wanna do a cover and need SOMETHING for the background vocals.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pre-Verse: Aa-ei-i-ya, aa-ei-ya Aa-ei-i-ya, aa-ei-ya Aa-ei-i-ya, aa-ei-i-ya Aa-ei-i-ya, aa-ei-ya Verse and Chorus: Ei-ga-kimi-na-ui-na-mi-raena Wo-ai-chi-sa-ya-sei-re-da Ie-da-biji-ga-ri-da-ri-da Mi-ra-i-ra-ya-te-mi-na
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Notes:
Woo! Not even a full stanza in and we already gotta make notes!!! Honestly, I have no good excuse for this except my own skill issue, I couldn't figure out a good way to stretch this out so I added "Lock and Load" as a sorta filler line. I tried to keep it somewhat in line, but yeah, this is 100% not a line that even remotely reflects the source material. If you're using this for a cover I'd heavily encourage, if you're able, to try and find your own alternative for this line. L for me.
Adding onto the previous note, I also restructured this part a bit. Normally, the "in deep blue" (and the later "in indigo" line) would be the fourth line, neatly breaking up the two halves of this section, but I interpreted the whole section being a singular "phrase", so I chose to move the impact lines to the very end, which also worked out better for structure for the same reasons as my previously noted filler line.
On the opposite end of the spectrum as my previous two notes, the original line here had too MUCH information to work structurally, so I had to neuter it a bit. The original line was "As everything, even prayers and promises, shatters away", and in the later line paralleling this, "As everything, even meetings and loneliness, shatters away". I interpreted this pair of lines as an escalation from the idea of "the world is falling apart" to "MY world is falling apart", as the first line refers to contracts of trust, prayers and promises are things which are often forgotten or broken, especially when made on a whim, while the second pair, meetings and loneliness, refer to personal experiences- things you don't easily forget about, so for them to "break" would say that you feel personally as though your own concept of reality is tearing apart, which adds to the existential doubt the narrator of the song seems to feel as I interpret it. I have no idea if my explanation makes sense, but the tl;dr here is "I had to convey a ton of information with only a few words, it was a pain in the butt."

Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Pulse is a quietly unnerving movie about the apocalypse, which comes not with a bang but with a slow (very slow) fading away. It seems to be brought about by technology, particularly the internet, which causes people to become lonely and isolated. The film is also a ghost story, which posits that the afterlife is a place of intense loneliness and isolation. As the film progresses, cities thin out and some of the characters simply fade into blurry splotches on the wall. One crumbles into flakes and is blown away by the wind. Unfortunately, we expect more from movies than melancholy disintegration, so the impact of Pulse disintegrates too, as it takes its long slow time to create a mood at the expense of telling a story.
