Notes:

I struggled to make this line flow well while retaining the meaning. What's actually being said here is along the lines of “I can’t rely on tomorrow since i’m always nervous and hesitant”- I ended up taking a somewhat flowery approach to portraying this line and while in my mind, it still comes across closely enough, I can understand finding this line to be an overly nihilistic interpretation. I don't even know if it's really worth making this note, but I figured I’d address it just to cover my bases.

These lines and the subsequent variations seem vague and up to interpretation. While I personally interpret it as the narrator reminiscing on a past loved one, hence the first person pronouns, some translations place it in the second person, as if the narrator is wiping someone else’s tears, or they keep the ambiguity and frame the lines in the third person. Additionally, the line simply translates as “that profile”, leaving it vague if the narrator is referring to a person’s physical form or a more abstract descriptor. I elaborated on this based on my interpretation in order to maintain the song’s flow. If you wish to cover this song with alterations, this line would likely be the best place to look if you want to adjust things to fit your own interpretation.

The kanji 矛 (spear) and 盾 (shield) together form 矛盾 (contradiction). I thought of ways to portray this wordplay in English, but ultimately decided a more direct translation of the meaning would be the best option, even if it doesn't quite carry the same weight. Additionally, I rearranged these lines a bit for flow.

Info / Explanations for the Curious

All ages are one year up from their currently listed age. The newly released ages for 4Piece are confirmed to be before their current year birthdays, meaning they will age up during the year.

While Jin and Akiomi's ages are currently listed in !!/ES1 Era as 31-32 and 29-30 on their profiles, respectively, these ages are not widely agreed upon, due to them not lining up with the Main Story's stated ages (which would be one year younger for each). Therefore, I used a wider range encompassing both of these possible ages.

Rinne and Niki never attended high school, and Niki therefore did not graduate with any of the ! Era third years, while Rinne would have been a third year during the War, had he attended.

Rei was held back due to his time abroad in his second year, making him one year older than the other ! Era Yumenosaki third-years, which he graduated with.

Tatsumi and Ritsu were both held back in their second years, due to Tatsumi's hospitalization and Ritsu's chronic absences due to his condition and lack of motivation, making them one year older than the other !!/ES1 Era third-years. Therefore, Ritsu recently graduated from Yumenosaki at the end of !!/ES1 Era March, while Tatsumi graduated from Reimei Academy around the same time.

Kaname was a first year alongside Jun during the Reimei Revolution (while Tatsumi was a second-year). Therefore, had he not been rendered comatose, he would have graduated Reimei Academy with Jun at the end of the !!/ES1 Era, making him the same age as the other !!/ES1 Era third years.

Hitsugi was admitted to the producer course during !!/ES1 Era as a second year, much like Anzu the year before, placing his age as the same as the other current !!!/ES2 third years. (While Hitsugi is 17-18 NEGI identifies as his older sister, likely putting her conscious around the age Hitsugi's original older sister died).

As of Ephemeral Festival, HiMERU is confirmed to be 19-20. This tracks with Akira's impossibly mature writing of children & babies (10-month-old Rei remembering specific details of Ritsu's birth, 3-year-old Hiiro speaking in full complex sentences about philosophy, etc), the possibility of Kaname being an affair baby (HiMERU ran away after his father's remarriage specifically; his father could have cheated on his mother before she died), the fact that HiMERU needs to be younger than Rinne (stated in internal monologue), and general Enstars timeline weirdness.

Seiya and Gatekeeper's ages are unknown, though they are typically estimated to be slightly older than Jin and Akiomi (mid-late 30s), with Gatekeeper seen as older, due to Gatekeeper's long history with Godfather (while Seiya is still an active idol with a late-teenage son).

Plot: The Kisugi sisters - Hitomi, Rui and Ai run the Cat's Eye coffee shop, but during the night they use that name in a different way - they are the highly professional art thieves known for warning in advance they're committing their high risk heists, to the despair of the Tokyo Police where Toshio, Hitomi's boyfriend, is a detective.

Length: 73 episodes, 135 chapters

Thoughts: Right after finishing City Hunter, I've found out it was Hojo second go at a series, Cat's Eye being the first. Loved it, made me get into Anri, who sang the intro, then it stayed relatively high on my chart. However, revisiting it after made me re-evaluate it a bit lower. I guess that's another reason I'm doing this.

So, let's start why. The capers, which range from using gadgets, and daredevil attempts to disguises and misdirections are still fun to watch, in part because they really mix it up. It reuses a bit of animation here and there and I don't feel the character design isn't fully in line with Tojo's style (particularly on the later half of the series, where it gets much better technically), and can look a bit wonky at times. The relationship at the center of the story between Hitomi and Toshio kinda makes me wonder if Hojo saw one of those drawings of Lupin and Zenigata kissing and thought "I can work with this". They had those in the late 70s, right? There's isn't much in terms in progression, but that's a theme here, you have all these heists of the sisters trying to recover their father's lost collection and get him back from hiding, but it a feels a bit.... inconsequential, maybe? Particularly when all those heists trying to get the attention of their father who's in hiding lead to nothing. We all expect these older adaptations to have a bit of a nothing ending, but if the adaptation ignored the source material completely by the second half, which finished early in the same year, then maybe it could have gotten one.

This time, however, I've also read the manga, and at the same time it makes the adaptation feel emptier, but it's fine because the missing regular and secondary characters add little and feel annoying anyway - the police is cut down to just Toshio, Chief and Asatani (who has less screentime and doesn't get the evolution she had in the manga, while Hirano, Takeuchi, Shige and Kizaki don't even get as background or one-off characters) while Kamiya is also absent. It's not exactly a *great* read given how uneven it can be, as about half-way it gives up on being a heist series and falls into more of a romcom with a lot of weird turns - lost count to the number of chapters Hitomi has a Normal One over believing Toshio is in love with one of her sisters (which is not totally out of character, she expresses doubts over her own commitment, and the whole double identity thing playing tricks on her own mind, plus one of her sisters is Rui after all and Toshio has wandering eyes for every pretty girl, but still weird), before picking up for the conclusion. Also unsurprising, the art at the start feels a generation behind of what Hojo would accomplish with City Hunter, Saeba even looks (and is) an evolution of Masato "Rat" Kamiya, even sharing the same Mokkori-man tendencies, and Kaori an older Ai, both being short haired tomboyish girls. With so many secondary characters out, particularly Kamiya, the stories in the first half of the adaptation often have the same beats and are resolved the same way, but different protagonists at each moment, while the second half is composed of completely new stories, fully suited to the existing cast. Also feels like cutting so much of the supporting cast may have harmed some of the flexibility they could have in having different stories - just from having Kamiya, for instance, could have helped with the occasional hint of a love triangle that is subverted at the end of each episode, a rivalry / partnership between him and the sisters or even as a way to Asatani to develop more as a character.

This is one of those shows I wish they gave the modern remake treatment and taking it a bit further, See, the fun of scheduling things is that days after writing this post (in Early November, and was scheduled to April) there's a new project coming up, nothing is known beyond the trailer, even of it's a CGI, or if like the new Lupin III it's returning to traditional animation, or even if it's a movie or a TV show. Anyway, we'll see when it gets there. As it is, the anime is a perfectly fine vintage heist show you can watch a couple episodes when you're in the mood for it.

Recommended to: fans of heist shows.

Oh yeah, this gets REALLY repetitive.

PSYCHO-PASS: Providence

The newest installment in the PSYCHO-PASS franchise is the Providence movie, which will premiere on May 2 in Japan. Kana Hanazawa, Tomokazu Seki, Kenji Nojima, and director Naoyoshi Shiotani attended the stage. The anime will be celebrating its 10th anniversary with a special event on June 17, but other than that not much was announced.

Tales of Wedding Rings stage has Gen Sato, Akari Kito, Hitomi Ueda, Ai Kakuma, Mikako Komatsu, and Miyuri Shimabukuro. The anime was announced in January.

The Elusive Samurai

The main cast of the recently announced anime has been revealed: Yuichi Nakamura will voice Yorishige Suga, while newcomer Asaki Yurikawa will voice Hokiyuki Tojo.

My Teen Romantic Comedy — SNAFU

Takuya Eguchi, Saori Hayami, Nao Toyama, Ayane Sakura, Chado Horii, and Watari Wataru are among the cast members.

Oshi no Ko

The stage included Rie Takahashi, Takeo Otsuka, Yurie Igoma, and Kent Ito. The anime will be released in April. A new trailer as well as a key visual have been released.

Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045

Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 is getting a second compilation film, which will be released later this year. Ilya Kushinov created a diagram:

TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You Season 2

TONIKAWA: OVER THE MOON FOR YOU Season 2 has revealed the opening sequence, which features “Setsuna no Chikai” by Neko Hacker and Tsukasa Yuzaki.

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2

Jujutsu Kaisen revealed the highly anticipated trailer for the second season ahead of the July premiere, along with staff and additional cast information.

Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World-

The highly anticipated third season of Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World- was announced with a teaser video and visual. Shinichiro Otsuka, the light novel illustrator, also created a celebratory image.

Overtake

Overtake, Ei Aoki’s KADOKAWA x TROYCA original TV anime project, has released a visual.

Horimiya

Horimiya delighted fans by revealing a new anime project. Horimiya -piece- will adapt the manga’s skipped chapters that did not make it into the first season of the TV anime.

A teaser image for the upcoming Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning film has been released. In Japan, the premiere date has been set for October 27.

A new trailer for the reboot of a popular anime has been released, along with some cast additions.

Goblin Slayer

Despite not having its own stage at AnimeJapan 2023, Goblin Slayer surprised us with an all-new visual ahead of the second season’s debut.

Undead Unluck 

Undead Unluck has released yet another teaser image as well as an October 2023 release date. The series is being animated by David Production.

A Returner’s Magic Should Be Special

Another Korean novel, A Returner’s Magic Should Be Special, is getting an anime adaptation. Takuma Terashima plays Desir Herrman.

The Love Live!

The Love Live! franchise went big at this year’s AnimeJapan. Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club got a trailer and new voice actress for Setsuna Yuki, A new cast was added to the Genjitsu no Yohane -Sunshine in the Mirror- spin-off, while a virtual idol project was launched. Idol Club at Hasunosora Jyogakuin School and upcoming Link! Like! Love Live! An opening video and story teaser were made available via a mobile app.

Netflix Stage

The majority of the Netflix stage was devoted to the upcoming Pluto anime, which received a key visual. Yakitori: Soldiers of Misfortune also received a visual and cast list, with one of the characters being voiced by Hatsune Miku. The premiere date for Marvy Jack’s Onmyoji adaptation has been set for 2023. The anime Ooku: The Inner Chambers has also been announced for Netflix in 2023.

16bit Sensation

The previously announced 16bit Sensation anime has taken an unexpected turn: rather than adapting the manga, the anime will feature an entirely new original story. The anime’s title is 16bit Sensation: ANOTHER LAYER, and it has also revealed a visual:

My Hero Academia

The seventh season of My Hero Academia was officially announced after the sixth season’s finale on Saturday, so technically this was not an AnimeJapan 2023 announcement. On Sunday, the anime will have its own stage, and we will undoubtedly pay attention to it.

Chained Soldier

Yet another trailer was unveiled by Chained Soldier, but the most intriguing detail was the release date: January 2024. The anime was supposed to debut in 2023 according to the previous trailer and other promotional materials, but this “quiet” delay was never made official.

Rascal Does Not Dream of a Sister Venturing Out, the highly anticipated sequel to the popular Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai anime, has received a new trailer and key visual, as well as a June release date. Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid is also in the works, but no details have been released.

Yumemiru Danshi wa Genjitsushugisha

Yumemiru Danshi wa Genjitsushugisha anime will be released in July. Last year, the adaptation was revealed. Animated by Gokumi and AXsiZ. Take a look at the new trailer and visuals:

A new key visual for the upcoming theater-focused anime has been revealed ahead of its April premiere date.

The Seven Deadly Sins: Four Knights of the Apocalypse introduced new cast members in a new trailer. The anime will premiere this October. In addition, The Seven Deadly Sins: Grudge of Edinburgh Part 2 revealed a first teaser ahead of the August premiere on Netflix.

Attack on Titan
