He's never made you feel like a dirty little secret. Truth be told, the unwillingness to go public was more due to your dislike of the limelight. However, now that it is already public, it seems disingenuous to lie. To tell the world there's nothing there. And what if it's because it's actually nothing, that you're not important enough to stake his reputation on. Sure, it's selfish and self-centred but-

"No," James cuts through your spiralling thoughts with one word.

"No?"

"No." He takes a moment to consider his next move. Realises that out of all the things that could be leaked to the press, his unsavoury dealings and bloody past, this is by far the lesser evil.

Had hoped that when this moment would come, and he would announce this relationship to the world, he would have much more control. Be able to shield you from the negative attention.

Still, it's never too late to control the narrative or to do everything in his power to protect you.

James whips out his phone, fires off a text or an email or likely a social media post because moments afterwards, your phone goes crazy again.

"Diego Kang is all yours." He announces, tossing his phone onto the coffee table with a clatter.

You look at him, long legs crossed, body language exuding confidence. The wicked gleam in his eyes. His smirk, fangs bared and dangerous. He looks at you like he wants to devour you, make you entirely his.

JAX: Amazingly, he has energy. He's hopped up on a mania that's driving him to clean and organize and run and jump and bounce off the walls like the Energizer Bunny on crack. He's not just stupid, he's energizingly stupid

GANGLE: She's amused by everything. Anything anyone is doing or saying is suddenly very funny.

ZOOBLE: Still and silent like a statue. Zooble is ZOOTED and believes they are one with the couch.

KINGER: He's the most lucid he's been with the lights on in a while. Now he's wondering what's wrong with everyone else.

GUMMIGOO: He literally melts. He's a puddle of goo until the effects wear off.

LOO: She doesn't partake in the stupid sauce and babysits Ragatha. Poor dear.

SETH: Existential crisis in AI form. He's laid out next to Pomni freaking out that nothing they're looking at is real. HES NOT REAL.

ABEL: Bro lays down in the fetal position and cries. He finally feels the feels he's been suppressing for 20 years. He's reduced to a blubbering mess.

chapter 144 thoughts!

I don't think any other chapter of Oshi no Ko has ever baffled and confounded me quite like this one. Viewed solely in isolation this is a perfectly fine, functional chapter but as the followup to 143 and everything it contained, I actually feel like I'm losing my mind a bit. 143 might as well not have happened for all the weight it's given in this chapter. Ruby is not remotely acting like a girl who just tongued her crush of 18 years and in general, the total absence of any reference or cushioning of the shock of that event is just so loud and so jarring and so completely out of touch with how OnK has handled romantic developments in the past.

Both AquAka kisses had at least a scene or two in the chapter immediately following of characters reacting to and reflecting on both the event itself and the status quo change it represents in the relationship. Even 124 has that scene of Ruby clinging onto Aqua to let the viewer know what the new dynamic between them is going to be from now on. This chapter has nothing of the sort; I wasn't kidding when it says it feels like the kiss never even happened. The only thing I can point to is Ruby's little "we have sensei at home" exchange with Tsukuyomi but that's… kind of just exactly what she would've said even before the kiss. So if it has resulted in absolutely no change to their dynamic that we can see thus far, what was the point in ending the chapter on that note?

The part of me that is cynical and jaded can't help but suspect that this is intentionally hot button reaction bait paced specifically for the purposes of keeping OnK a trendy topic in the lead up to season 2 of the anime airing, But Who's To Say, Really.

I also had my worries about this last chapter, but unless we skip back in time to address it, it really looks like we've skipped over the remainder of the KamiAi romance and everything to do with the early stages of Ai's pregnancy. This is incredibly frustrating to me - they're parts of Ai's story I had been incredibly curious about and was excited to see her thoughts and feelings on, even filtered through fiction. In general, the way the Movie Arc has been increasingly dropping its focus on actually conveying Ai's story has been a real sore point for me. I fully acknowledge this rankles me more than perhaps it should because I am so deeply invested in Ai above any other character but… fuck, man! Once again, remember when this was supposed to be an arc about her? About her inner life, her pain and struggles and Aqua and Ruby working to a better understanding of her? I was excited for the Movie Arc specifically because I thought we were going to get peeks at parts of Ai's life we weren't privy to beforehand, but at this point it almost feels like Akasaka has just lost interest in following through.

Not only that but… uh, where's that KamiAi breakup scene, Akasaka? The one we were promised during the script reading? That huge I CAN'T LOVE YOU elephant that's been patiently sitting in the room? I can only assume that the 15YL version of this breakup happens after the twins are born or maybe even when Kamiki visited Ai at the hospital the night the kids were born but. What the fuck is even going on here anymore lol. The Oshi no Brainrot discord has been kicking around a joke theory that we were seeing the events of the Movie Arc out of their actual chronological order and it is becoming increasingly less of a joke in my brain because I can't make any sense of its progression otherwise.

oh my god i'm almost 1000 words in and i haven't started talking about the actual point of this chapter yet. god help me.

Anyway, MY SON IS HERE LET'S GO MELT!!!!!!

Ngl, I've always been a little disappointed that we didn't see much more of Melt in this arc, both just because I like him and because I think there's some really interesting potential in drawing on the parallels between Melt and Kamiki. I'm not the first to point out that Melt's experience with a dubiously consensual sexual encounter at the hands of an upperclassman - when he wasn't that much older than Hikaru was when Airi began abusing him - echoes at least in spirit Kamiki's experiences as a CSA victim; both were young boys, noted to be pretty and desirable, who were taken advantage of by older female figures. I think it would be extremely interesting and a great character moment for Melt to have some degree of engagement with that material and maybe to have some thoughts about it. It feels like a little bit of a missed opportunity to pass up on that, but I also acknowledge that Melt is ultimately not a huge mover and shaker in the overall story and I don't know how that would've fit into the Movie Arc as it stands, so I'll just have to make eyes at the AO3 tag and hope someone writes a fic about it.

Anyway as a lot of people predicted… here's Ruby being a jackass to Melt about his performance!!! Joking aside, I will admit it's a little jarring to see Ruby being so hostile to Melt over this…? Gorou is a sore spot for her, obviously and she would undoubtedly have high standards for his role in the movie. In addition, Ruby being snitty with people who rub her the wrong way definitely isn't new for her, but it still feels kind of odd both coming off her own struggles to connect with Ai through acting and her little "holy shit other people have feelings" breakthrough in the wake of the RBKN fight for her to be like this about it. I do think this is mostly just supposed to be just goofs and I'm overthinking it, it was just one of those things that kind of gave me pause as I was reading.

ruby's little little princess shirt is really good though, as is her referring to herself as a fan of the 'original work'. both of those got a solid sensible chuckle out of me.

Another thing that gave me pause for a very different reason was Melt and Ruby's exchange about his little merch pin. First and foremost, I think this is a really good Melt moment; while we saw him busting his ass to improve his acting in Tokyo Blade, that was very much when he had something to prove. Here, he really does seem to be going above and beyond for what is basically a bit part purely out of a desire to improve his craft and a passion for acting overall. It's nice to see the story double down in this being a lesson he did properly take away from Sweet Today and that he has committed to acting upon it (no pun intended) in the long term, not just when under outside pressure to do so.

The other thing that jumped out to me about this exchange is that… technically speaking, both Ruby and Melt are wrong, here? It's a very nice, flowery description of Gorou and it certainly lines up with his more positive traits but the idea of him not wearing his Ai merch in front of Ai herself is actually incorrect. Gorou is depicted (in the anime, anyway) as openly wearing the charm at what's implied to be all times, even in front of Ai herself. The manga also implies by way of where the charm is on his person when Ruby finds his body that this is also the case in that version of events, too. I don't think it's a retcon and may be an unimportant detail in the grand scheme of things but it did pique my interest.

There's a few ways to take this, I think; a more positive spin is that this is in line with what the story wants us to take away from 15 Year Lie as a production, where the literal granular facts of its events are sometimes less important than and can be bent in favour of supporting the emotional narrative it wants to convey. Melt may not literally be correct here, but he at least achieves the spirit of the right answer in his efforts. "Lies are love", after all.

However, given that Ruby enthusiastically endorses this interpretation - and is thus wrong alongside Melt - this could potentially be an indication of there being cracks in Ruby's rose-tinted view of Gorou. This strikes me as a fascinating idea and one I hope the series plays with; it would follow quite naturally from last chapter's framing of Gorou as Ruby's 'idol' that she's 'gachikoi' for. Oshi no Ko has pretty consistently portrayed the idol/fan relationship as inherently unequal, even when approached with the best of intentions and to truly know someone, you must let them off their pedestal first. She has sort of begun this process with Ai, just through empathizing with her during the 15YL production but we have yet to see anything similar happen with Gorou - if anything, we see the opposite here, where she asserts herself as the authority on Gorou's character as if she has the final say on who he was and what he felt and thought.

But the thing is, how well can Ruby really say that she knew him? They were only in each others' lives for a few months and in that time, she was only exposed to a very narrow slice of his life and his personality. Hell, you could even argue that Akane knows more about Gorou than Ruby does, given that we have no indication that Ruby or Sarina was ever privy to the details of his birth and his home life. Again, it's entirely possible that I'm reading too much into this, but now the idea is in my brain I'm simmering on it a bit. If nothing else, I hope the series takes the time to prod and poke at this angle, especially now it has made the fan/idol aspect of this dynamic explicit and textual.

Ruby and Melt's little senpai/kouhai dynamic has the potential to be really cute and I do hope the series actually spends some time on it. I've always thought a RBML friendship could be really fun to watch play out and seeing Melt gain some confidence in himself by teaching someone else could be really great. But with how unfocused the Movie Arc has been, it's really hard to get my hopes up that we'll be sticking with this even past this chapter lol

Surprisingly, I don't have a lot to really say about her little lore drop here, since it's mostly mystery boxing and implications and, man. It's been 69 (nice) chapters since she first started showing up ominously muttering about supernatural things and while I don't mind her presence and I think she's evolved into a fun character, it's a little hard for me to get interested in these little supernatural tidbits until they resolve into something that feels meaningful for the characters.

This isn't helped by the fact that we don't really know what kami means in the context she uses it here. While 'god' and 'gods' are not strictly incorrect as translations, I think an English speaking viewer is primed to think of Abrahamic, capital G-Gods, which isn't necessarily correct. The term kami is a catchall that covers all manner of things from divinities to venerated earthbound humans, so kami can perhaps best be understood as being an umbrella term for something like 'an otherworldly being', which I think better lines up with Tsukuyomi's assertion that those who have memories of past lives are like kami in of themselves.

Ultimately though until we know what kami really means and amounts to in Oshi no Ko, it's hard to say what this means for the characters and I am ultimately only really interested in the characters. So until we know what this actually amounts to in-story, I'm just kind of nodding long with whatever Crow Girl says because sure. This might as well happen.

Ultra City was still under siege, with the drones attacking scavengers and searching for 'variants': mutants, aliens, anyone who didn't fit the mold of what Ultron believed a human should be. Hawkeye said that just Ultra City had around ten thousand drones doing Ultron's binding, and on top of that Tony had informed them of the fact that Asia was still under attack as well— that could mean another ten thousand drones, or more...

The Hulk and Betty were gone, Thor —while he had helped Torunn— was being otherwise unhelpful with all this, Vision was only a head, and with his armor wrecked back in Ultra City, Tony was just a man with a heart condition.

They needed help, and they needed it fast.

For now, they had returned to their safe haven in the Arctic circle. Repairing the damage and expanding the dome so that people from all over the world could be brought there and hide from the drones. Privacy had gone from something the kids took for granted to a privilege. Mostly, James managed to find some privacy in the late hours of the night.

He had always been a night owl. But tonight, he stayed awake with a purpose.

While his father, from how Tony and even Ultron spoke of him, was more of the hopeful type. His mother had prepared for the worst. She left behind a crate of things: a gun, his black leather jacket that he wore everywhere he went, and pictures. So many pictures. Of him, of her and his father. All except for one: a picture of his mother standing beside a stocky, dark haired man who James hadn't ever seen before. On the back of the picture, his mother had written: "If you ever need help, find him."

"Jocasta."

"Yes, James?" the disembodied, feminine yet artificial voice replied.

"What can you tell me about this man?"

He held the picture up, allowing the AI to scan it. There was a moment of silence that left James bouncing his leg, picking at the seams of his jeans and pulling at the thin threads he managed to loosen. Until, finally, Jocasta spoke up:

"Codename: Wolverine," she started. "Canadian male. Former member of the mutant group known as the X-Men. Veteran in multiple wars. Status..." another long pause. "Unknown."

James straightened up on his seat. "Unknown?" he repeated. "So he is not dead?"

And so James went down a rabbit hole, trying to track down a man who hadn't been seen in over a decade, a man he only knew through a picture his mother had left behind for him before being killed by Ultron, a man who —for all James knew—, could be dead. Before he knew it, he was back on the ship, having left behind a note to tell the others that he would be back, and with only a guestimate of this Wolverine's whereabouts.

James had grown up in an oasis in the middle of the Arctic circle, visited Ultra City, then traveled the middle of nowhere in the desert thanks to Dr. Banner, but he hadn't ever been to a place quite like this.

Vision was right, the Wildlands weren't all bad. Miles and miles of green as far as the eye could see. Frok above, James thought it was all grass. Once the ship landed, he realized it was all trees. A seemingly endless forest. Seemed like a fitting place to find a wolverine— hopefully, it would be the Wolverine he was looking for, and not the bad tempered animal.

His father's shield, once used to block attacks from all sorts of enemies, now worked to shield him from the sun that filtered through the leaves above.

Jocasta said this guy was a mutant with enhanced senses. He hoped she was right.

"Wolverine!" he yelled, hands cupping his mouth to produce a louder sound. "Come on out, I need your help!"

It wasn't a plan. But this place was huge, what else was he supposed to do?

He was so focused on this mission, on finding his family help, it didn't even cross his mind that some of Ultron's drones might have been lured to the area, following the energy source of his ship.

Daddy's Always Willing to Help

After graduating college, Taylor was thrilled to be accepted into the very exclusive: Kink Academy. As a legacy, you'd think things would have been easier, but his "Daddy" was a legend at the academy and the expectations for Taylor to impress were very high.

Things had changed a bit since his Daddy had been the big man on campus. Technology is now a huge part of the curriculum and something Taylor was very skilled at and passionate for.

This semester Taylor's special project was working on an app that integrated AI (artificial intelligence) and AR(augmented reality) to create a one of a kind kinky experience he's calling "Deep Fucked". He'd been working hard training the AI with data from the school's digital archives and vault (which had lots of material featuring "Daddy", but that's a story, several stories, for another day) and was ready for the human testing phase. It was designed for at least two users: an operator and a participant. He needed someone he could trust to try it out on.

He knows his Daddy will be proud, but would he be willing to help him test it out? Taylor asks Daddy for help, and without batting an eye, or asking any questions, Daddy agrees to do whatever it takes.

So what does Daddy have to do? To begin with, Taylor just needs to scan Daddys full body. "You need me naked?" Daddy asks. Taylor smiles and laughs a bit: "No, not yet at least, for now... You can stay dressed". Daddy laughed:" I don't understand. I thought this was kinky". Taylor just smiles and winks saying:"You'll see... If it works". Just stand nice and still. Taylor gets a full body scan... front and back... Now to see if it works: "let me try a few of the filters... Let's see if it will take your shirt off. Ah... Wow... It's so realistic... Nice undershirt Daddy". Dad looks at him: "It's working? What's it doing?". "Don't worry, trust me..." Taylor replies as he presses the remove pants button to see his Daddy without pants! Daddy completely shocked instinctively covers his junk with his hands. "Um , what do you mean?" He says nervously. Why am I feeling so exposed? What do you mean naked? What do you mean you've seen it before? Daddy still doesn't quite understand: "But how? I'm fully clothed!". Just spin around! I've been working with the school archives. Daddy nervously chuckles as his spins around and puts his hands behind his head as instructed. Surely he didn't see EVERYTHING? Taylor scrolls through several options to see how well they look on his Dad from behind. Including the "women's lingerie" option which makes Taylor giggle a bit, but also reminds him that Daddy looks great in and OUT of everything. Taylor laughs, "You've created a kinky genius... Don't worry, now that I have your scans I'll be able to make some tweaks and make it even better. I'm showing my progress to a few of my professors(most of which were buddies of Daddy's during his time at the school) and my class, well really the entire school tomorrow. If also like to share these images of how realistically naked you look on my socials- I've been crowd sourcing some of the ideas to make this the best app it can be. my thoughts on the instagram ai situation, as a digital artist on the platform

figured i’d write and share this around so others in the community i’m in know my status. sooo, some basics for starters:

“Are you leaving Instagram? Where can I find you active?”

i’m staying on instagram for the time being. seeing as instagram almost certainly already has the data of my past posts, i won’t be deleting anything; going forward, i’ll be using ai disturbance filters and other anti-ai overlays for any stills i post. i anticipate using instagram for reels primarily, as well as staying in communications with mutuals and other artists. i do have a cara account, but will likely be posting intermittently until some issues i’ve noticed get addressed. going forward, i’ll most likely be at my most active over here! growth, fortunately, never was a priority in my social media presence so i’m not super concerned about that.

Why???? Does Ranmaru's CD work but Reiji's doesn't???? I don't understand???? What??? How???

I was doing testing again. Bought a version of PriLoveUniverse on iTunes to see if I could finally get it out. Doesn't work even when bought and converted. Which I thought was the issue when my converted Live Emotion songs worked while ASSMU and Reiji didn't. And was like "Oh I still need to rip Ranmaru's for myself. And let's check if it'll upload for shits and giggles" and it works???

I saw a post out there say it was maybe a copyright thing, more stuff added to the filter. But why would Ranmaru work when Reiji doesn't? It's one thing if they were from different releases, but they're from the same set??? Also in my opinion, wouldn't the error message for a copyright thing tell me as such? Instead of just being like "Ooops! Didn't work!!!"

And now I'm gonna have an incomplete project with Ranmaru working but Reiji not. Who knows the status on Ai and Camus, we'll figure out later.

Imo, it's pretty inevitable that Kana is going to find out about Aqua's revenge plan - it feels very intentional that the movie arc is pretty much the first time he's been willing to actively involve and manipulate Kana specifically for his own ends and I don't think it's a coincidence that this is only happening now Aqua is at his lowest point. Involving Kana to such a degree really feels like Aqua choosing to cross a line he had previously drawn for himself in terms of involving Kana directly with his revenge.

After all, I don't think it's accidental or due to a lack of focus that Kana has largely remained ignorant to this side of Aqua - rather, I think it's representative of the fact that Kana and his friendship with her is, in a lot of ways, a sort of refuge for Aqua, a window into a life as a normal teenager. As he himself put it all the way back in chapter 30, Kana is one of the few people in his life Aqua feels he can talk to without any manipulation or ulterior motives and it's clear he deeply values this aspect of their relationship. Through Kana, a lot of Aqua's worst traits are sort of filtered through a brighter, kinder lens and she brings a lot of his better traits out of him - his playful sense of humour, his sense of care and duty to the people around him, that sort of thing. Even the parts of himself he hates are softened a bit. For the like, five of you who occupy the middle of the "Oshi no Ko enjoyer" and "Umineko Enjoyer" Venn diagram, through Aqua and Kana's friendship, we (and arguably Aqua) are able to see him with love.

It's why I think it's not just inevitable but outright necessary that Kana find out about everything going on with Aqua. Aqua's arc during this stretch of the manga has been about him desecrating all his most important relationships and finally crossing the line in actively manipulating and involving Kana is part of that desecration. It's such a big shift in the status quo of their relationship that it necessitates Kana being given the information necessary to join everyone else in shaking him and going STOP RUINING YOUR LIFE, DIPSHIT!!!!

Anyway uh as you can probably tell by all that, I really like Kana! She's probably my favourite member of the cast who is not Ai and I think it's partially because her arc hits on a lot of similar beats to the ones that made Ai so compelling for me. She is definitely not on the same level of Brain Melting Blorbo as Ai obviously is for me lol but she touches on those same issues of lingering damage caused by childhood abuse, exploitation and abandonment and the kinds of things that pain does to you as you grow up. She engages with these themes in a way that is distinct enough from Ai to feel refreshing and honest while also, imo, being in conversation with it enough that it all coheres quite nicely.

I also just think she's fun and cute! The anime in general and its handling of the material is what finally made me really click with Oshi no Ko and Kana is, imo, second only to Ai in being the best served by the adaptation. She's plenty fun in the manga obviously but the anime puts a really tangible amount of love and care into its portrayal of her and does so many fun and cute things with her character acting it's really hard not to be endeared to her. I liked her fine during my first pass of the manga but it was definitely the anime that turned me into a card carrying Arima Kana Enjoyer. A big part of what has me so excited about season 2 is knowing that some of her best moments after going to get that same loving treatment and I can't wait to see it!

More concept work for my comic plans, where after Westview Vision is found by Monica, Darcy, and Jimmy who help him build a life and remember who he is. Monica offers him a job at SWORD with Hayward out of the way, to reform it and return it to her mother's vision (pardon the pun). Vision helps out with this process, because who better to be watching and ensuring there is ethical treatement of AI and other 'sentient weapons' than the most advanced synthetic being on Earth? It will also give him an opportunity to explore who he is, and how he ended up being turned into Hayward's weapon in WandaVision.

(I have no affiliation with Marvel/the MCU - this is purely a fan project, and I know if we get Vision Quest as a series it will likely go in a very different direction. That's the joy of the Multiverse though - anything is possible, and I love telling *my* Vision's story through art and my stories.)

Breakdown of my process below the cut, as this was painted as a quick demo for a friend asking about how I do things and I enjoyed it enough to finish it:

My process has changed a little over the years but remains roughly the same. The level of depth and detail just means more hours refining the painting down more and more with additional layers and passes of light, shadow, and texture.

Before I start a piece, even just sketches to unwind, I gather reference. Sometimes I'll just see a photo I like of Paul/Lizzie, or sometimes an unrelated image where the pose or lighting or ambience speaks to me. I also use my collection for reference - my statues and Hot Toy figuresm to get the right lighting and angles, especially for Vision and all his robot lines (though admittedly these days I don't always use a reference and just go from memory...I think I draw this silly robot too much).

Once I've got a concept and some references gathered I set up my canvas. Currently I use CSP and I love it, and I have a variety of texture files I've purchased that mimic different types of paper. I like working on these as it feels more natural with the pencil, ink, and marker brushes I use. Once I have my references set up in the file I'll do a rough sketch, blocking out proportions and basic shapes. I'll set a mid-tone grey background as well, and I almost always sketch in color. I like choosing a color that represents the character for me - bright blue for Vizh, red for Wanda. I have a Loki sketch I need to finish for my sister and I used green for him. It helps me capture the 'energy' of the character, and this sketch remains a part of the finished painting even as I refine.

Once I've got a rough sketch down I'll start working on more detail. Sometimes this will be inks, sometimes just another pass with pencil. Depends on the piece and what I'm going for. This step can happen multiple times for complicated paintings, and usually I'll cycle through steps 2-6 multiple times for a large piece.

Once I have the lines down I'll paint flats. Most of the time I'm using a big brush that emulates a marker, because I like the texture it gives, especially when layered. I'm very mess and use an eraser brush to clean up the lines, and sometimes I'll go back and tweak the line art until I like the look. During this phase I'll also lay down some details - freckles, scars, details like eyes, tattoos, jewelry as well. When painting Vizh I like getting the texture in his robotic eyes done early on, and usually refine them again towards the end.

The real fun starts here - I'll block in my lighting, usually just going with whaveter I'm feeling in the moment. I like playing with gradients and layering them in different ways to create a more dynamic image, and then I start blocking in shadows with soft brushes.

More lighting. I start adding top layers to further stretch the dynamic. I like overlays, and adding a sort of dreamlike/surreal filter through the color. I'll also start adding in highlights to contrast the shadows and work in small sections to render the details. I always start big and decrease my brush sizes for detail and work in layers and stages, checking the reference as well as the painting's lighting (which is not always the same as my reference) as I go.

Texture texture texture. I like texture. This step sometimes happens earlier, but once I'm happy with my actual *painting* of my subject(s) I'll start figuring out background elements and textures for visual appeal.
