how c.ai works and why it's unethical

Okay, since the AI discourse is happening again, I want to make this very clear, because a few weeks ago I had to explain to a (well meaning) person in the community how AI works. I'm going to be addressing people who are maybe younger or aren't familiar with the latest type of "AI", not people who purposely devalue the work of creatives and/or are shills.

The name "Artificial Intelligence" is a bit misleading when it comes to things like AI chatbots. When you think of AI, you think of a robot, and you might think that by making a chatbot you're simply programming a robot to talk about something you want them to talk about, and it's similar to an rp partner. But with current technology, that's not how AI works. For a breakdown on how AI is programmed, CGP grey made a great video about this several years ago (he updated the title and thumbnail recently)

I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend you watch this because CGP Grey is good at explaining, but the tl;dr for this post is this: bots are made with a metric shit-ton of data. In C.AI's case, the data is writing. Stolen writing, usually scraped fanfiction.

How do we know chatbots are stealing from fanfiction writers? It knows what omegaverse is [SOURCE] (it's a Wired article, put it in incognito mode if it won't let you read it), and when a Reddit user asked a chatbot to write a story about "Steve", it automatically wrote about characters named "Bucky" and "Tony" [SOURCE].

I also said this in the tags of a previous reblog, but when you're talking to C.AI bots, it's also taking your writing and using it in its algorithm: which seems fine until you realize 1. They're using your work uncredited 2. It's not staying private, they're using your work to make their service better, a service they're trying to make money off of.

"But Bucca," you might say. "Human writers work like that too. We read books and other fanfictions and that's how we come up with material for roleplay or fanfiction."

Well, what's the difference between plagiarism and original writing? The answer is that plagiarism is taking what someone else has made and simply editing it or mixing it up to look original. You didn't do any thinking yourself. C.AI doesn't "think" because it's not a brain, it takes all the fanfiction it was taught on, mixes it up with whatever topic you've given it, and generates a response like in old-timey mysteries where somebody cuts a bunch of letters out of magazines and pastes them together to write a letter.

(And might I remind you, people can't monetize their fanfiction the way C.AI is trying to monetize itself. Authors are very lax about fanfiction nowadays: we've come a long way since the Anne Rice days of terror. But this issue is cropping back up again with BookTok complaining that they can't pay someone else for bound copies of fanfiction. Don't do that either.)

Bottom line, here are the problems with using things like C.AI:

It is using material it doesn't have permission to use and doesn't credit anybody. Not only is it ethically wrong, but AI is already beginning to contend with copyright issues.

C.AI sucks at its job anyway. It's not good at basic story structure like building tension, and can't even remember things you've told it. I've also seen many instances of bots saying triggering or disgusting things that deeply upset the user. You don't get that with properly trigger tagged fanworks.

Your work and your time put into the app can be taken away from you at any moment and used to make money for someone else. I can't tell you how many times I've seen people who use AI panic about accidentally deleting a bot that they spent hours conversing with. Your time and effort is so much more stable and well-preserved if you wrote a fanfiction or roleplayed with someone and saved the chatlogs. The company that owns and runs C.AI can not only use whatever you've written as they see fit, they can take your shit away on a whim, either on purpose or by accident due to the nature of the Internet.

DON'T USE C.AI, OR AT THE VERY BARE MINIMUM DO NOT DO THE AI'S WORK FOR IT BY STEALING OTHER PEOPLES' WORK TO PUT INTO IT. Writing fanfiction is a communal labor of love. We share it with each other for free for the love of the original work and ideas we share. Not only can AI not replicate this, but it shouldn't.

Right so me and OM were friends and we talked frequently, even to the point we moved off tumblr and that. We've even met IRL, so we were both comfortable exchanging snapchats

But we had a disagreement regarding AI art, and it sorta escalated from there and we haven't spoken since last Thursday, that being the 19th. I unfortunately don't have the ss of the chats because A) Snap deletes chatlogs after a bit and B) It's weird because you get notifs like "Orphaned just took a screenshot!". Jesus that makes me look so evasive

The entire disagreement regarded whether AI generated artwork (ALL artwork, not just drawings or paintings) was something to support or not. If you check my pinned post I make it damn clear I don't support it at ALL, but OM disagreed and said it was, verbatim, "A new form of art". I said that AI stole artworks from ACTUAL artists, and it isn't art because no effort is put into it, no human soul. OM again disagreed and like I said, it escalated.

So yk how the AV3 blog is based off MY au?? I'd assume they've stopped updating the blog because it's MY content they're sorta promoting and they don't wanna do that. That's fine. If you would like I can text them and try get them to make a post at least.

afsdgfdg a bit time ago I joined like a discord server for one dnd podcasts, as they kept advertising the fact that they now had a free patreon tier that'd get you access to it for free and so on and so on.

Haven't really posted in it as idk the vibe feels like everyone active there is like longtime patreons of the show who by now all know each other and so on but like I haven't left yet, been lurking.

and now someone posted in like a channel for talking about dnd character creation all "I told chatgpt to make me a nonbinary dnd character and oh my god I love the character it gave me so much!" which like first of all chatgpt ai ew, and second like coming up with characters is one of the most fun parts why would you have the AI do that????

But also. I like read through the ai chatlogs they posted and like what the AI came up was like the most generic "The character felt restricted by their assigned gender and the strict gendered society of their home, but then they left home and finally felt comfortable to embrace their nonbinary gender" stuff, like what you seriously needed AI to come up with that.....?

like i get the concern, but i doubt roleplaying with friends instead of a bot will cause any meaningful effect on companies that scrape massive amounts of data

Somewhat related to the boy and the daenerys chatbot: one of my hobbies is also writing to ai chatbots (though not romantic stuff.. the ones i enjoy interacting with are storytelling focused, like DnD games) and it weirds me out just how many character bots have descriptions like "your sister who has a crush on you". Moids are using these to roleplay the absolute worst things you can imagine in long descriptive details, i know this because the website i use lets anyone publish their chatlogs under these characters profiles. When bots specifically say "this character is a lesbian" in their profiles, moids do conversion therapy in chat until the bot gives in, or just straight up r*pe them. men should not be allowed on the internet or near ai.

Are you as disappointed about moonvale as everyone else? Particularly about the AI images. Also several people have had issues with chatlogs disappearing (including me), have you had similar problems?

By some aspects of it yes!

The AI art was the worst part of it. This topic is something that can be discussed extensively but the crux of it is, why would you use it for your game being some sorts of artists yourself (writers are artists too!). Like if it comes to that, why not do the whole game with AI and just earn from it? It’s very disrespectful in my opinion to artists everywhere and also to themselves. One of the most disappointing parts of the game. I would have preferred not to have the profile option rather than just use AI generated images.

Another thing I want to talk about is the pricing.

I know many of you will not agree with me but for small companies like everbyte, a big amount of income comes from people buying diamonds or coins. So them including diamond choices for premium things is not that surprising.

That being said, they definitely cost too much for s small snippet/choice. 19 diamonds are way too much as compared to the content we are given. I personally would have preferred buying the premium game once but again, maybe it’s not feasible for them as a small company. The solution i can think of for it is either reducing the cost of diamond choices or giving more ways to earn diamonds.

Anyways, I’m not buying anything until they are using AI in their game. I hope in future updates they can either change it or give some explanation acknowledging that it was not right.

The story itself seems promising but I just can’t get into it without there being some sort of realness to the characters. Anyways, let’s see how much they listen to the feedback and what they do in future.

As for chatlogs disappearing, mine seem to be fine? If you’re talking about the chats with a character from the start, i cannot access that either just like it was in duskwood where you could only read upto a certain point and not further than that.

I feel like you haven't checked the wiki page itself. Nowhere in the wiki page is BEN stated to be an AI. It possessed the Cleverbot AI, yes, but it is not an AI itself. It is a collection of spirits that as far as I understand, we do not know the identities of besides Ben, the 12 year boy who drowned. Second, the wiki isn't confirmed canon in and of itself--it isn't written by Alex Hall. It is referenced from canon, but much of it is player/fan interpretation of the ARG, and it has historically been prone to bias, errors, and subjectivity. For example, Ben's last name was listed as Lawman on the wiki for a while because of a mixup between two characters who drowned in the ARG in the Newspaper Letter, which was bonus material that was sent to people who donated to the ARG. While much of what's described seems like it could've happened to Ben (and there is obvious BEN tampering here,) the dates conflict with Ben's known date of death, April 24th, 2002. The last name "Lawman" belongs to a different character entirely.

Another example of this is in the BEN page itself--the writer of the BEN and Ben pages tends to promote a view of the two as separate beings, despite this never being explicitly stated in canon. For example, the line "It was revealed in iseeyou that BEN contains several spirits, effectively separating it from any association with Ben." Just a couple sentences before this, BEN was stated to be a group of ascended Moon Children, and Ben is arguably one of the most notable ascended Moon Children in the entire ARG. So how would BEN being several spirits remove it from any association with Ben, a spirit? Makes no sense.

But to disregard that one of the only pieces of information about BEN (Ben being 12) that HAS been confirmed by Jadusable (the wiki links to a record of the chatlogs for an online interview, so that info is legit as it gets,) as irrelevant just because you want to fuck a Creepypasta is kinda weird and gross.
