Sorcerer Supreme Family

Within the context of the DC Universe, three characters have been hailed under that title and were actually related to one another.

Calculha: Also known as the Ancient One, he is actually a deity embodying light and goodness who originated from Darkworld, which is currently a piece of the Great Darkness in the form of a cosmic creature whose body doubles as a dimension & their dreams oddly generates magic (complex weird shit amirite?) He’s the earliest, if not first, explicit Sorcerer Supreme in DC.

Arion: One of the two twin sons of Calculha & his wife and equal, Dark Majistra. His history differs in continuity but Arion is commonly a demigod, Lord of Order, & ruler of Atlantis whose magic skills rivals Nabu. In addition, he is the ancestor of the current Royal Family of Atlantis.

Zatanna: Most people already are familiar with this backwards casting sorceress but many aren’t aware that she is both the official Sorceress Supreme in DC & she is related to Arion & Calculha both through her mother’s (NOT Giovanni Zatara) side.

It weirds me the fuck out they say “Air-y-an”.

On one hand, “Arion” is a canonical corruption of his actual name because he debuted 500,000 years prior to his resurrection & language changes. Powergirl even once corrected somebody in it.

On another, nobody ever says “Ah-Rai-Ahn” (Ahri’ahn) so they’re just butchering his name. It’s ironic because the way it’s spelt & how it influences the pronouncation is similar to Kaldur’ahm, which the show creators themselves have explained.

Also, they mispronounced Arion’s name.

His true name is also the correct ways of saying it “Ahri’ahn” (Ah-Rai-An). It’s literally like “Kaldur’ahm” in sounding.

The "unspecified poc" tag is used because of the character's mother, Dark Majistra in her original incarnation, having features & clothing that suggested Egyptian origin although she predates them.

Shoutout to another victim of DC Comic’s unnecessary condition of whitewashing that ends up making her look like plain characters. Dark Majistra is a character from Arion: Lords of Atlantis. Decent during the time sword and sorcery genre was in, she is one of Arion’s enemies and more importantly, his mother. Dark Majistra of Mu is an ancient Atlantean (therefore a Homo Magi and not like the aquatic people we know as she existed like HUNDRED THOUSANDS of years before Atlantis sunk or maybe even existed. For example, Zatanna is a Homo Magi) and dark mage powerful enough to have matched a Atlantean God, Calculha. He is in Atlantis’s history as one of the first and greatest mages. She seduces him and bore twin sons, Ahri’ahn (Arion) and Garn Dannuth. But she is an Agent of Chaos and evil so she raises Garn in the dark arts and ignore Arion since he’s the good son and learns from Calculha instead. That point on, she and her son clash since her former mate dies at some point. Personally, I am still learning of the character but at her peak, she’s powerful enough to rival a Atlantean god and Arion’s magic, like his father, is derived from stellar energy so suffice to say she’s pretty powerful. Her goals and plots in her story seems to revolve around regaining lost power (she’s powered usually by an entity or external source) from magical items and is one of Arion’s most dangerous and powerful enemies, the other being his brother Garn and Chaos, a Lord of Chaos. Sadly, her coming full circle as a respectable, usable villainess is very low as she is rarely appears. Even the DC Wiki doesn’t keep track of her appearances. I found her on my own and even bought the book digitally. She is re-introduced in Justice League #16 in the Rebirth 2016 series. However, she is re-imagined as a white, red haired woman instead of being a obviously, Egyptian-like dark skinned woman. In this universe, she was a Queen of Atlantis and a mage that contributed to creating the Zodiac Crystals. She might be a minor character in the grand scheme of things, but it’s quite sad that she gets re-imagined to look very plain jane. Additionally, it does take out the bi-racial heritage of Arion (though these characters existed before Egypt’s empires and whatnot even manifested. Many nations originated from here fictionally) and somehow, they ended up making Calculha (her mate) look like a ‘plain john’ brunette in a toga. He was a vibrant ginger with tattoos and I think he went around either almost or even naked. From the artwork I’ve seen of Calculha, he gave Majistra a run for her money on the scantily clad department. Beyond her appearance in JL Rebirth, all that’s known she gave birth to Arion and an unnamed baby assumed to be Prime Earth Garn. Her son, Arion, became a Lord of Atlantis but went crazy and got beat up by Doctor Fate, sealed, and resurfaced as some dark being in the modern day only to inevitably get beat up by Blue Beetle and again, Doctor Fate. Neither her or Arion were tough S.O.Bs that they were in New Earth.
