To begin this post, I’ll quote Maxon here from the Elite, “I had a thought.” Or maybe a few. Yeah, that’s more accurate when it comes to my sort of pondering. So, in terms of King Clarkson, as a fandom, I think we can collectively agree that had he been alive, he would have made life really difficult for America and Maxon as a married couple. Although, I feel like we never fully let ourselves imagine the extent it could go to; sure, some fanfics delve into those realms of possibilities but it’s only surface level. Look, I’m definitely not shaming anyone, I didn’t really think of this topic too often or that much, either, until now given how terrible it is but I just wanted to open up the conversation to see the community’s thoughts.
First of all, I really think that getting to the wedding itself would have been a challenge especially if Clarkson continuously pushed the matter of those New Year’s announcements on America. There would have been literally no peace after the engagement with that going on. I think that he would’ve also harassed Maxon often about the final choice, making his displeasure known at every impasse and at the slightest mistake that sent him raging, he would cane him more harshly. All to get his anger out at Maxon’s supposed incompetence, his future daughter-in-law, and all her flaws and mistakes, too. I bet that he would also try to keep his son as busy as possible to keep him and America separated and in addition, intimidate her as much as he could every spare moment.
Now, with the case of America’s marriage to Maxon, that would bring about a whole new set of problems. I’m sure that he’d try to put off stepping down for as many years as he could but even with their ascension, he would keep a tight leash on Maxon. It wouldn’t be surprising if he made threats to his son about his wife’s safety and that would make Maxon heel every time just to keep the peace, making his decisions stringent and very much not his own. They’d be spineless. Essentially he’d be a king with no power, a puppet leader being pulled by strings. Oh, and the abuse would continue being bad, if not worse, in regards to where America would be involved with making certain changes. Clarkson would likely be enraged at her being more included in such decision-making because ain’t no way that Maxon wouldn’t do exactly that. He’s done that sort of thing in the books, this wouldn’t be a new thing to see during their marriage.
Then, we get to the next gen. Of course, America and Maxon would still be monitored for their procreating abilities but I feel like this would be some next level spying and maybe even some sort of intervention on Clarkson’s part if the baby was revealed to not be a boy. We know of Amberly’s miscarriages and I’m sure we all believe that there is still something suspicious about them despite the explanation we got about the toxins because of where she lived. There is speculation here and there that Clarkson may have poisoned her to induce miscarriages if the babies were girls and if this was something he did to his own wife, he definitely wouldn’t have been above doing it again to his daughter-in-law. Given that we also know that he abused Maxon after he found out about his affair which resulted in an illegitimate daughter and that he was cheating on Amberly, who knows what he would have done to his son this time around if it was uncovered that he poisoned America? This man is shown to go to great lengths to keep something incriminating against him quiet, whether that be family or not. But let’s move on from that.
Say Clarkson didn’t care whether they had a bunch of children that included daughters and sons, he would still likely prefer that the first born is a son but more so, he would be concerned with the fact that the next heir should be a male child as by tradition. The grandchild he’d want to lead the country after Maxon as hereditary heir to the throne would be any boy and that would possibly translate to favoritism bias based on gender. If the twins were still born in this alternate scenario, the likely version of events to follow would be that Ahren would be favored and Eadlyn would be disowned as heir even though she’s older. Actually, I don’t believe that it would just be the case with Ahren being the favorite, I’m sure that any of America and Maxon’s sons would be liked better by their grandfather, meaning Kaden and Osten would all be better treated by Clarkson than Eadlyn, just Ahren would get more attention because he would be the crown prince. Because Eadlyn is a princess, by this timeline, her fate would be to marry off to foreign royalty as per Illan tradition and though I have a feeling that America and Maxon would have been able to abolish that law even with Clarkson around, he would oppose this action greatly. It would make him resent his granddaughter severely, neglecting her when it comes to spending time with all his grandchildren and in the case that he got involved with training her as Illéa’s first queen regnant, he would take every opportunity to belittle her, the situation becoming reminiscent to that of Maxon’s days as prince minus the canings. Anyways, in the other scenario where he got his way and Eadlyn wasn’t made heir but rather Ahren, Maxon would have had extensive arguments with his father about it regardless but caved. Although, he would have fought Clarkson in terms of marrying her off and tried to still set up a way for his daughter to have a role in the monarchy when she was older. Otherwise, Eadlyn’s childhood would have still been rough with Clarkson around and similarly he would be displeased with her but on a lesser scale because there was a crown prince and not a crown princess to take over.
In short, Clarkson would have made America and Maxon’s lives a living hell along with that of their daughter’s. I’m just happy we don’t have that as canon in the books. It’s for the best that Clarkson was dead when Maxon married America in the end because I think there would have been twice as many obstacles for them to face and even though Maxon would have been married to the love of his life, he would be unhappy and unnecessarily pressured due to the constant circumstances of his wife and children being under threat by his tyrant of a father. Let me know what you think. Thanks for reading.

The Selection #4 by Kiera Cass
Tumblr media
Twenty years ago, America Singer took part in the Selection and Prince Maxon fell in love with her. Now it is Eadlyn's turn to hold a Selection of her own. Eadlyn doesn't expect her Selection to be as perfect as her parents' fairy-tale love story. But as the competition begins, she may find that her own happily ever after isn't as impossible as she always thought.
The book starts with Eadlyn, a 18-year-old, explaining that she was born seven minutes before her twin brother, Ahren. Before, it would be his turn to be the next king of Illéa, but their parents, King Maxon Schreave and Queen America Schreave, changed the law. This meant that Eadlyn could be the first female ruler of the country. This often overwhelms her, but it also makes her feel powerful. Maxon and America have two more sons: Kaden, who is 14, and Osten, who is 10.
Her father has abolished the old social classes, but although people were initially happy about this, many citizens begin to riot all over the country because of unfair treatment. To distract the public until they can figure out a way to fix the situation, her parents suggest that Eadlyn should go through her own Selection. Eadlyn is not keen on the idea as she doesn't feel ready for marriage and doesn't want to love and be married to a stranger. However, she reluctantly agrees to a three-month Selection, for the sake of the country's entertainment, and of her parents, who agree that it's all right if she doesn't choose anyone in the end.
In the end, 35 men are randomly picked, including Kile Woodwork, son of Carter and Marlee Woodwork. He strongly rejects his selection, insisting that he didn't actually apply for it. But now that his name has been announced, he has no choice but to take part, which he and Eadlyn don't like. The two dislike each other, even though they have been raised together in the palace.
During the first interview with the chosen suitors, some of the chosen catch Eadlyn's attention, like the polite Hale Garner, the over-confident Ean Cabel and the always-happy Henri Jaakoppi from Swendway, who can only speak a little English and participates in the selection with the help of his translator, Erik. To impress the country, she organizes a parade through the city so that people can admire her and the Selected Men. But the parade goes wrong when some of the crowd throw food at her, insult her and demand jobs. Eadlyn realizes that some people in the country don't like her, so Ahren suggests that she should not look so distant and scowling, especially in the photos of the Selection.
To make people interested, Eadlyn gets rid of 11 of the Suitors in public, which is quite extreme. Unfortunately, the newspapers criticise her again, calling her a snob and saying she doesn't care about her own Selection. To make the public interested, Eadlyn decides to act like she is interested in the men, even though she isn't. She asks Kile, the only man she knows who has been chosen, to kiss her in front of a hidden camera. The kiss leaves her feeling uneasy because she didn't expect to like it so much.
Eadlyn then goes on a date with Hale. They talk about his life and family, but when she asks about her fashion sketches, which are her hobby, she is afraid of opening herself to him and she leaves. She goes on another date with Baden Trains, where they play music together. She asks Kile to kiss her again, but says she doesn't like him and won't choose him. She later goes on a movie date with Jack Ranger. Things get awkward when he tries to touch her inappropriately, and she panics and kicks him out of the Selection.
During a horse riding date with Ean, he understands that Eadlyn doesn't actually want the Selection. He proposes that if she finds no one suitable in the group, she can choose him. He says he'll settle for a comfortable life as her prince consort, and she'll be free to rule however she wants without ever loving him, because he thinks love is overrated.
Later, Eadlyn cooks in the palace kitchen with Kile, Burke, Renn, Fox, Wesley, Henri and Erik. However, Burke gets angry when Henri, being a professional cook, makes an exceptional dessert, while Burke's appetisers with Fox were just OK. During the fight, Burke punches Fox and accidentally pushes Eadlyn to the floor. Kile and Henri try to stop him. Erik takes Eadlyn away from the fight and into her room. He reveals that his given name is Eikko. She thanks him for his help and as they shake hands, she realizes he is a kind person.
Burke is sent home. Eadlyn talks with Fox and, after learning about his difficult background, she decides to let him stay, as he wasn't really responsible for the fight. Eadlyn kisses Kile again, but this time they talk about the Selection. She tells him that she is glad he was chosen, because she can tell that he is a good person.
Eadlyn learns that people in the poorer provinces are starting a rebellion to end the monarchy because they didn't benefit from the caste dissolution and think the King doesn't care about them. Later that night, Eadlyn finds Henri cooking in the kitchen. After they have cooked together, they share a hesitant, romantic kiss. But Eadlyn is still afraid of falling in love, even though she realizes she really likes some of these men.
Baden tells Eadlyn that he wants to leave the Selection because he feels ignored by her. He is also upset that she did not pay attention to his invitation to go on a date with him earlier. He says she is being too pushy and selfish. This upsets her, and she cries in her room, thinking that other people probably think the same things about her. At that moment, Erik appears and comforts her. He asks if she is upset by their kiss, but she says Henri is one of the kindest people she has ever met. Erik tells her that Henri really likes her and wants to marry her, but says that Henri's difficulty with languages might be a big problem if she starts to have feelings for him. He says he can be her friend, and she says that's OK.
Eadlyn talks with Kile, who comforts her. They both admit that they now want to take part in the Selection, even though she is still afraid to open herself to the boys. He tells her about a design idea he has for small houses for industrial workers in the poorer provinces, while he is studying architecture.
Eadlyn invites the French princess Camille to the palace. Camille is the daughter of Queen Daphne and the next in line to the French throne. Camille is in a relationship with Ahren. They have been completely in love for years. This makes Eadlyn feel uncomfortable and slightly jealous because she has never felt such love and because Camille is just as important to Ahren as she is. Camille is always cheerful and kind, and people love her. Eadlyn wishes she could be like her.
During a party held in Camille's honour, Eadlyn sees Erik, who looks handsome in his formal suit. Eadlyn tells Erik how she feels about Camille, and he says she shouldn't try to be like the French princess because being herself is good enough. He holds her hand and, tentatively, starts to stroke it. He admits that he didn't put his name in the Selection because he is not important, but Eadlyn insists that "he is Eikko" and that being himself is enough. She later dances happily with Henri, noticing though that Erik watches them with a sad smile.
Eadlyn tells Ahren to end his relationship with Camille, saying that she might not be the right person for him, which makes him sad. During dinner the next night, Gavril Fadaye tells Maxon, America and Eadlyn that Ahren and Camille had left Illéa and secretly got married in France, after Queen Daphne gave them her official approval. Eadlyn runs to her room, where she finds a letter from Ahren.
In the letter, after asking for her and their parents' forgiveness, Ahren explains that he decided to marry Camille, after Eadlyn told him to leave her. He realized that his sister disliked his girlfriend only because she was afraid that Camille would "steal" Ahren from Eadlyn. Eadlyn really wanted her brother in her life, and asked him to do a lot of things, maybe even to take the throne for her. But Ahren chose to be with his true love, even though he loved his sister. He told Eadlyn that while Camille is approachable and shares her power fairly, Eadlyn keeps people at a distance and uses her power like a weapon. As a result, many provinces don't want her as their future ruler and she is one of the reasons they are now in a riot. Ahren advises her to be open to her people, to be brave and feminine, and to find love.
Eadlyn is angry and hurt by his words and his departure, but when she goes to her parents' room to inform them about the letter, she finds photos of them during their own Selection, their wedding and the birth of their children. Eadlyn realizes that her father had made this room into a special place to show how much he loves her mother. Now she understands why Ahren chose his girlfriend over his family.
At that moment, she findds out that her mother has had a heart attack. This is after she hears about Ahren and his new wife running off together. She runs to the hospital wing, where she finds her father crying and General Leger comforting him. They are both hoping for the best. Marlee, Kaden, May and the Selected Men also come to pray for America's recovery. Afraid of losing her mother and seeing all those people around her and the strong bonds they share, Eadlyn finally understands how important love is to her. She decides that she wants to find in the Selection someone who will love her, stating that at the end of the Selection, she "will have a ring on her finger."

Lesson Number 173: Grief can change with age, but it doesn’t get any easier
Tumblr media
Table of Contents
If he had known what was in the letter, he wouldn’t have been in such a hurry. He wouldn’t have tossed it on the bed and continued about his business without a second thought. It wasn’t until Maxon heard his wife’s wailing cry that he halted his work immediately and sprinted back into her room.
America was leaned over like she’d been hit, the letter clutched in her right hand as she used her left to hold onto the bed. Maxon was barely able to get to her before she fully collapsed.
“My dear, what is it? What’s happened?” He held her tightly as she put the letter into his hand, shielding her face from it.
“I-it’s from James. It’s Kenna. S-she’s dead.”
“What?” Maxon’s eyes scanned the letter. A few of the words had smudged from what appeared to be tears falling onto the page. Cardio problems. Just like her father.
“J-just like Dad. It’s just like Dad.” She sobbed. “Oh god and it’s almost Christmas. She was so young. Why now? H-how can this happen? How can this…” Her cries became hysterical again, making it impossible to speak.
“I don’t know, darling.” He whispered, gently rubbing soothing circles up and down her back. “I’m so sorry.” Those words couldn’t even begin to convey what he meant. How he wished he could take this grief from her, or at least shoulder some of it. While he was fond of Kenna and was saddened at the thought of James and her two children, he knew that his grief was nothing compared to the hole that would be left in America’s heart.
Once she had calmed herself down, the two were informed that her mother was already at the palace, having received the letter just prior to her. America rushed to her without a moment’s hesitation. Magda was practically inconsolable, burying herself in her daughter’s embrace the moment they collided. Maxon watched on as a quiet bystander, unsure whether or not to approach. Of course, Magda had always treated him well, but he felt his presence would not aid in her comfort.
However, the second she saw him, she pulled her into a tight hug. He had no words he could say to her, but she seemed to understand his sympathies. Pulling away, she laid a hand on his cheek, examining his face for a moment before once again bursting into sobs. He couldn’t imagine the poor woman’s pain. To lose her husband and her child in such similar ways, at the same time of year- it was enough to break any woman. But he knew Magda was strong and she would find a way to face this with the help of her remaining daughters.
America quickly led her up to her room and Maxon saw to it that all of the servants were informed of the situation and were not to disturb Her Majesty or his mother-in-law until May arrived.
“Do you want us to tell the princes and princess?” One maid asked.
“Oh god, the children.” Maxon sighed, running a hand down his face. “No, no, I’ll tell them. Just inform me as soon as the queen’s sister arrives.”
“Of course, Your Majesty.” She curtseyed and hurried off to relay the message to the others. He just hoped none of his children overheard before he could get to them.
-
It was a small mercy that May was not on one of her travels. She was close to Angeles when she was told the news, so it did not take long after Magda arrived for her to walk through the palace doors. Maxon was not first to greet her. Instead, it was a bubbly Eadlyn- overjoyed to see one aunt, having no idea that she had lost the other. May took her excitement with grace, keeping her chin up and a small smile on as long as she could.
“May?” Maxon started down the entryway and she ran to meet him, falling into a hug. “I’m so so sorry.”
“I just can’t believe it.” She cried, trying to keep a brave face in front of Eadlyn. “I keep waiting for her to walk in and pull me into one of her hugs.” She brushed away falling tears. He put a comforting hand on her shoulder.
“Come, they’re waiting for you.” He started to usher her to the stairs when he heard a quiet, confused voice.
“Dad?” Eadlyn watched him with wide, confused eyes. “What’s going on?”
“Eady, could you find your siblings please?” He gave her a reassuring smile, though even he wasn’t sure how convincing it was. “I need to talk to all of you.”
He proceeded with May up to the queen’s suite and gently knocked on the door. With a quiet ‘Come in,’ he opened the door and May’s brave face fell apart.
“May,” America cried, holding out her arm to her youngest sister. With Magda on one side and May crawling to her other, Maxon gave his wife a simple supportive nod before closing the door.
“Where’s mommy?” Osten tugged on the sleeve of Maxon’s suit, his bright eyes staring up at him. “I want to tell her something.”
“Mommy’s busy now.”
“Dad.” Ahren started with concern. He and Eadlyn were watching him carefully as if they were trying to read his thoughts. He motioned to his room.
“Come with me.” Gathering the four children at the edge of his bed, Osten and Kaden sat on the floor while the twins stood, their curious and worried eyes burning into him.
“Okay, dad, you’re scaring me.” Eadlyn said, crossing her arms. “What’s wrong with mom? Why was Aunt May so upset?”
“Is Mommy sad?”
“Yes, Osten, Mommy is very sad.” Maxon kept himself as composed as possible, but with four pairs of eyes watching his every move and ears hold onto his every word, it was difficult to find exactly what to say. He looked at each of them before taking a deep breath. “Your mother received a letter this morning. Your Aunt Kenna died last night.”
Eadlyn immediately stiffened, as if bracing herself for anything emotion that was to come. Always the tough one. Sometimes Maxon worried that he’d made her too tough. Ahren ran a hand down his face and blew out a long breath.
“What about Astra and Leo?” He asked.
“Your mother and I will see to it that your Uncle James and your cousins have everything they need.” Maxon answered very steadily, though his children could see that he felt this loss more than he was showing them. Kaden blinked away tears and Ahren put his hands on his shoulders. It was Osten that surprised Maxon the most.
His youngest was only seven. He only had a vague idea of what death really meant. He couldn’t understand that he would never see Aunt Kenna again or understand why his mother was so sad. But he must have understood enough. The young prince slowly got to his feet and walked up to his father, looked into his tearful eyes, and pulled him into a hug.
The other children soon joined, crawling onto the bed with him and wrapping their father in a comforting embrace. When the servants came to ask him about funeral preparations, they found him asleep, his four loving children curled up on either side.
