DESIGNATED SURVIVOR: 60 DAYS
GENRES: Drama, Political Procedural
SUMMARY: A temporary acting President has to deal with keeping a country afloat amid a crisis, internal espionage, and new suits.
THIS SHOW HAS EVERYTHING: Dust particles, botched press conferences, testy teens, VIPs, bombings, assassinations, military intrigue, national abandonment, hacking, camping, and eyeglasses.
HOT TAKE: I have not yet seen the American version of this show, but damn, this was a democratic rollercoaster of an experience. Everyone is out to win something whether it's an improved South Korea, dirty revenge, or just maintaining some semblance of governmental sanity.
This show has a real 'let's use the same 3 hallway sets over and over again' problem, but the familiar environments just made me care that much more about the acting masterclasses happening between their walls.

Call It Love
This is not the typical cross-lovers story. Shim Woo Joo - in her quest to avenge her family from her late father's mistress (and later wife) who took away their home - she meets Han Dong Jin (the woman's son). And in her attempt at revenge, she falls in love.
Even if the story sounds like the typical storyline, the execution is different. Here she has a male-best friend who is just a friend. There is no best friend-in love with her in silence troupe. They are truly best friends and he falls in love with her older sister. It explores what happens when a parent leaves home to be with someone else from different perspectives. Hae Sung (the eldest daughter) is always dating the wrong men but never gives up on being with someone. Yet, when she finds out that the man she is seeing is actually married, she feels horrible about herself because she has sworn never to do that. She knows how painful that is. Woo Joo took on the weight of the house, not going to school and working. She is the strong one, the one who takes charge, the one that suffers in silence while her older sister can play and her younger brother too. She is the one with the consuming anger, the one that knows the face of her father's lover, the one who confronted him and watched him leave with the other woman. And she is the one who seeks revenge when the woman throws them out of their home. Ji Goo was too little when it happened. He only remembers his father as a loving man. He never saw him with another woman, and he lives a pretty much carefree life. Their mother is also an elegant woman, who doesn't lower herself in front of the mistress or her unfaithful husband. I liked that too. I can understand their pain, I could relate to Woo Joo in many ways.
I could also see Dong Jin and how his mother's actions also affected his life. How he carried the shame of her unethical behavior, how he has to deal with the consequences of her actions. These are young people that are living with the hurt and pain, and I liked watching their healing process. I liked how the story unfolded, leaving cliché out of the equation. It felt real and its bittersweetness, mixed with the sweetness of hope, balancing the mood of the story.
I truly loved the story and recommend it.

UNLOCK MY BOSS // KDRAMA DİZİ YORUMU
UYARI : Yazılar genel olarak spoiler içerebilir. İçermeyedebilir.
İmdb puanı: 7,2 Benim puanım: 8
Drama: Unlock My Boss
Hangul:
Director: Lee Chul-Ha
Writer: Park Sung-Hyun (webcomic), Kim Hyeong-Min
Date: 2023
Language: Korean
Country: South Korea
Cast: Chae Jong-Hyeop, Seo Eun-Su, Park Sung-Woong, Kim Sung-Oh, Ahn Nae-Sang, Kim Young-Sun, Yoon Byung-Hee
Kurgu yer yer temposunu kaybediyordu. Karakterlerin haleti ruhiyesine odaklandığı bölümlerde iyice senaryodan kopup sıkıcı bir hal alıyordu. Hele yan karkterler hiç yoktu desem yeridir.

I've watched the first half of the first episode of Into the Ring (I've also seen it called Memorials) and I think I might love it?
It's like genuinely weird with genuinely weird characters. It's slapstick, but in a way that I enjoy. It's about local politics and government bureaucracy!
The whole thing so far seems to be shot with a wide angle lens, which contributes to the weird feeling. There are lots of beautifully framed symmetrical shots, and lots of distortion of faces. It's creates this sense of surrealism and distance, which is interesting, although it might get annoying if the whole show is like this.
I looked it up because I saw a post about the lead actor (Park Sung Hoon), who was also in The Glory, and is completely transformed here. And the concept looked interesting. But it also has Supreme Court Justice/Professor Min (Ahn Nae Sang) from The Devil Judge! Who was recognizable, I was racking my brain to figure out where I knew him from.

The one who bears the most power can protect the least
Moon Embracing the Sun (episodes 1 - 20)
This show was the stepping stone for me in watching period dramas and supernatural themes. I used to fear that the application of historical ideologies might turn me off period dramas, and supernatural themes may come off as awkward and cringe-worthy. However, my concerns quickly disappeared. Moon Embracing the Sun brought to life so many strong female characters and the supernatural themes were all necessary to the plot and delivered well. The characters were complex and dimensional and while the plot is primarily heavy, comic interactions between certain relationships ensured a good balance to allow audiences to breathe. But I think the highlight of the show for me were the younger counterparts of the main characters who were all so captivating to watch and since then, have grown as actress/ors with their own shows.
But this post is not about any of the above (although, I could dedicate a post to the strong female characters because good or evil, they are worth talking about).
Moon Embracing the Sun is, of course, a period drama revolving around a love story and a political war against the backdrop of the Joseon dynasty. But I want to put focus this time on those who are perceived to be the most powerful, despite actually being the most vulnerable.
King Sung-jo (played by Ahn Nae-sung) was a wise king who greatly loved his family. However, despite holding the most powerful position in Joseon, King Sung-joo was powerless when it came to his own family.
From the very first episode, the brother’s king is murdered and wrongfully accused of treason against the king. However, despite King Sung-jo knowing that he wasn’t betrayed by his brother, he was forced to stay silent as his brother’s honour is destroyed and his brother’s lover is tortured and executed. As king, Sung-jo is burdened by the need to protect his throne in order to fulfill his duties to his nation. And with that obligation comes the burden of protecting the Queen Dowager’s dark secret even if it came at a price of his brother’s honour.
12 years later, King Sung-jo did not have the power to intervene with the selection of his son’s future betrothed even when he knew that the selection was manipulated by those who wanted to take control. Only with the power given to him by the Sungkyunkwan scholars was he enabled to be able to control the selections to ensure that only the rightful person would become the Crown Princess. But when the rightful Crown Princess Heo Yeon-woo (Kim Yoo-jung) was dishonourably removed from the palace due to the selfish schemes of the Queen Dowager, King Sung-jo once again turned a blind eye, even when he knew that his feigning of ignorance effectively sacrificed the family who has remained loyal to him and sentenced them to live in disgrace.
The King once again is forced to put his duties to his nation ahead of his desire to protect his son from losing his love, his desire to protect the rightful Crown Princess, and his desire to protect his loyal servants.
But perhaps the most painful from all King Sung-jo lost because of his power, is the loss of his first son, Prince Yang-myung (Lee Tae-ri) . Prince Yang-myung, born first but forever second to his younger half-brother, Lee Hwon, lives to gain his father’s acknowledgment. However, in order for the King to protect his sons and protect Lee Hwon as the future king, King Sung-jo sacrifices his relationship with Yang-myung to ensure stability within the nation he serves.
King Sung-jo protected the dark secrets of his family and made sacrifices until his death because he thought it was the right thing to do to serve his nation.
And King Sung-jo’s powerlessness as the King is reflected onto his successor. As Crown Prince and then King, Lee Hwon (played by Yeo Jin-goo and Kim Soo-hyun) struggles with protecting all those important to him: from his childhood love, the Crown Princess Heo Yeon-woo, his loyal teacher, Scholar Heo Yeom, his brother, Prince Yang-myung, and his new love, Shaman Weol. Instead of holding the power as Crown Prince and King to protect his loved ones, it was they who protected him instead.
The King, believed to hold the most power in the nation, was instead the most powerless and the ones who sacrificed the most as they bear the weight of their crown.

The Devil Judge. 8
Story: 9
Acting: 10
Chemistry: 10
Comparable to: Beyond Evil (kdrama); Taxi Driver (kdrama)
I love dystopia type of scenarios so this storyline was really interesting. Yes in ways it has been done before, but this was very nicely executed. First and foremost the acting in this is what makes this drama so brilliantly brilliant. It’s a very dark series. So if you’re looking for fluffy-ness and romance, it’s nowhere to be seen. No BL either. Maybe a sparkling of hints, but more leaning onto bromance then anything else. Nonetheless this is a excellent gripping, thrilling series. Ji Sung is highlight here. Can you expect any less.😉

CALL IT LOVE // KDRAMA DİZİ YORUMU
UYARI : Yazılar genel olarak spoiler içerebilir. İçermeyedebilir.
İmdb puanı : 8,6 Benim puanım: 8
Drama: Call It Love
Hangul:
Director: Lee Gwang-Young, Kim Ji-Yeon
Writer: Kim Ga-Eun
Date: 2023
Language: Korean
Country: South Korea
Cast: Kim Young-Kwang, Lee Sung-Kyung , Sung Joon, Kim Ye-Won, Jang Sung-Bum, Jun Suk-Ho
Sanki her şey olacağına varıyor.
