for some reason this idea that there is something distinctly 2000's about (detco) kaitou kid is an idea which has lingered for a few days and refused to give me any answers when i ask questions

i think the thing that makes toon-beetlebabes the optimal version of beetlebabes, particularly in comparison to the musical version of the ship, is that lydia is actually... nice.
musical lydia is funny in her meanness, but she is still mean. movie lydia is a lonely teenager masquerading (at least, thats how i interpreted it) as someone angstier and more uncaring than she really is.
cartoon lydia is cheerful and kind and intelligent, who at least tries politeness first before she decides if someone deserves it or not. cartoon lydia is unflappable in the face of beetlejuices gross and creepy habits — in fact, thats WHY she likes him so much. she's such a genuine person that her spooky interests dont come off as an aesthetic mask to bolster her attitude.
(now that i think about it, astrid from the film makes me think of almost a perfect mix of musical and toon lydia — she's surly and dismissive, and has an interest in protecting the environment).
of course, beetlejuice himself is half of this dynamic, and again i think the reason the cartoon version of this duo works so well is that lydia is the only person beetlejuice would go out of his way to do something nice for. i don't think he even considered the idea of being lonely before he met lydia, and then after becoming her friend he got to experience a range of emotions he didn't seem to comprehend or have access to before — he just likes her that much! he didn't give two shits about anyone before he met her.
musicaljuice kiiinda taps into that, but that version of beetlejuice was sad regardless of whether or not he knew lydia — he was just lonely and kind of pathetic and would try his "i'm your new best friend" shpeal on anyone who seemed remotely interested in letting him stick around (tbh a lot of his actions in the bulk of the show dont seem to match his dismissively murderous monologue in "the whole being dead thing" right at the beginning).
cartoon beetlejuice and lydia are such fully realized characters outside of their dynamic that it makes their scenes where they ARE together even better.
sorry if i said anything (read: everything) you've already said before but just... ahhh i LOVE toonbabes so much. it was the first proper ship i ever had, and it still remains extremely dear to me.
Agreed, 1000%. Toon Lydia is so beautifully confident in who she is and what she likes. She's kind and polite to just about everyone she meets, but she loves spooky things and bugs and, to the endless confusion of the people around her, Beetlejuice himself. And Beetlejuice loves that about her.
Quite literally the only thing toon Beetlebabes has working against it is the question of their ages, which everyone's got their own way of either approaching or headcanoning around...if it weren't for that, if Lydia were just stated to be 18 from the get-go, they'd be the Gomez and Morticia of '90s cartoons. They're two people who love everything about each other, support each other endlessly, build off one another to become better people, and spend every day together happy that they met. They were very special to me as a kid, and they always will be.

DUNGEON MESHI EPISODE 21 THOUGHTS
Well, some long awaited characters are finally here! And there's a damn ton of lore being revealed, I am on the edge of my seat!!!
Tumblr media
Ah, Mithrun. You look absolutely terrible <3 I need to give you all the comforts known to man. But also, I'm interested to see someone finally facing Kabru's 4D chess head on.
Tumblr media
OH MY LORD THAT IS MUCH LARGER THAN I IMAGINED THEM BEING. but I am certainly not complaining - much like laios, learning about the monsters of this dungeon is my highlight of the week. Just seeing the basilisks be essentially chickens was a surprise but this? Ahhh, it reminds me of those posts about cows sleeping on your legs. I wonder if a minotaur would be similar.
Tumblr media
Marcille, my dear, you look hauntingly similar to your mother in this one. Also like something from a 90's idea of a futuristic movie, I love it.
Tumblr media
They! Let! Him! Milk! A! Minotaur!!!
(fr though chilchuck pls be happy for this man. If you've ever 1. milked a cow and 2. had a special interest, you know how amazing this was for laios)
Tumblr media
Beautiful. No notes. (Actually yes notes, marcille literally looks like a queen in this one. I wonder).
Tumblr media
I KNEW IT SHE IS A RAGING TOUDENSEXUAL IN DENIAL
Tumblr media
My beautiful wife. I can stare at this shot for hours.
Tumblr media
THATS YAAD? I HAD HEARD HIS NAME AND KNEW HE WAS IMPORTANT - I DIDNT THINK HE WOULD LOOK LIKE SOME AGELESS BUT GRAYING CHILD. SOMEONE HELP THIS MAN.
Tumblr media
Marcille "I am offended you ordered cooked minotaur for our meal but will continue to thoroughly enjoy it while you get bestowed a terrible prophecy nonetheless" Donato, truly the character ever

hi, I'm here to annoy!! you're favorite thing/s about Billy and Stu, GO!
AHHH I LOVE YOU!!
Well for Stu, I love how he's so insensitive; I adore his (probably purposely) oblivious nature. Hes a dumb fuck and he plays INTO it, I just know that man can manipulate people easy because he can just play into the dumb Popular boy trope!!
A Non cannon thing I'd love is that I just KNOW he's academically dense (kinda), like don't get me wrong - if he REALLY wanted to (which he does not) he could do pretty well in certain lessons but he just can't be bothered, his ass would do anything BUT pay attention
For Billy? I love how he acts, he really does make his own movie yaknoe? He like fully ACTS around his friends, his girlfriend - hell even the sheriff and his dad; he WANTS to be a character but you can see it slip (like pre-reveal) and when it does? AUDHDHJD
But non cannon wise? I think that man is just like your average teen in the 90s; he skateboards, uses his Walkman 24/7, hangs out with people and enjoys himself which isn't FULLY explored unlike with stu and how its obvious he gets up to stuff. Billy is your average teen boy behind all the revenge and murder plotting
THANK YOU FOR ASKING AUGDHDHEH

I’m like, 90% sure you talked about this before, but the pure VITRIOL in Mario’s face right before he punches bowser in the ending fight when they get the star is still something I can’t fully get over. Especially in how it almost becomes comical in comparison to Luigi’s more sternly determined expression. Like Mario wants this man turtle? DEAD.
Side note: I just gotta say, I have been LOVING ur “Luigi goes on his own adventure with his arch nemesis King Boo while Mario is kidnapped by said arch nemesis” so much! Seriously, it’s such a treat. The way you characterize everyone, the plot, and just the wonderful way you tie everything together!! Ahhh!!! It’s so good!
Thank you! I'm having a good time writing that AU, and what better way to pass the time until we get that Mario Movie sequel? But back to what you were saying... yes, I LOVE that look on Mario's face. It's personal for both of them, but for Mario it is super duper extra personal. Luigi's mostly just defending his sibling while getting a bit of payback, but Mario has seen firsthand all the damage Bowser does and everything/everyone he threatens. That, plus the fact that he held his brother captive for days and nearly killed him? Mario is ready to obliterate.
Tumblr media
Another tiny detail: the difference in their facial expressions right after the punch
Tumblr media
Luigi maintains a determined expression. Mario is grinning from ear to ear. It's pretty clear who's enjoying this beatdown more.

Finally knitted Halloween socks that I've been meaning to knit since I bought this yarn last year!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The yarn is from "SavannahRoseHandmade" from the 90s Halloween Collection (sold out now UGH [understandable, but UGH]) and is visually inspired by the movie Scream (1996). I saw the colour pooling effect on their sample swatch when they shared the yarn collection images on Reddit last year, and was immediately like, 'Holy shit it's just like CRT TV static!!' And I had to get it. (And then life happened and I didn't get around to knitting them until now lol).
And unfortunately, I'm SO IN LOVE WITH IT!! THE EFFECT DID TRANSLATE TO SOCKS AND NOW IT'S LIKE, AHHH I NEED MORE. I don't know if I have enough yarn left to make an additional pair, so I'll have to figure out how to weigh it and the socks and see if the weight compares (really don't wanna end up with 3 socks and not enough for the 4th lol). But yeah. I'm so glad I got to do this. The yarn colouration was SO fun to work with, and the yarn was a nice and smooth 1-ply which was a huge relief from the fluffy yarn on the socks I'd been working on just before this. And yes, I did intentionally take this photo in front of those books because of the spiral-ish pooling.
Can I just also... like... holy fuck, man. I LOVE when yarn pools into unique patterns. It's the best phenomenon ever. And especially like for this one being black and white? That subtle grey transition from stark white to pitch black is EVERYTHING. Like I never would have thought one could create yarn that would pool EXACTLY like TV static rolling down the screen when knit. Major nostalgia vibes. I can feel the forcefield.
Also, started these babies September 27 and finished the second sock today October 3rd, which may be a new record for me knitting socks, I was so fucking excited. I even have a big ole 'writers bump' on my finger from the way I hold my knitting needles lmao (was also knitting a different pair of socks before this, too), and my arthritis is Not happy, but screw you, arthritis! I'M HAPPY.
Side note: it would be cool to pair this yarn with like a red addition somehow. Get a Saw vibe going bc of the TV static pooling effect. (I do love Scream though.) Or you could even probably take it a The Ring route with like a fly applique or something. So many horror movie staples with TV static effect, and not enough Scream yarn to test them out!!
Bonus image when the socks were a WIP:
Tumblr media
I had my new tooth and doll eye stitch markers going. I DO have bloody murder weapon stitch markers, but none of them are a buck knife (Ghostface's weapon), so I went for general Halloween vibes instead (even tho I use stitch markers like this year-round lol).

AHHH I didn't even consider Rotxo and Kiri until this page :,) he really did spend like 90% of his screen time worrying about her didn't he lol. I hope they at least become besties in the upcoming movies
I’m so happy I got to introduce you to the ship!! He truly did, even scenes I didn’t notice like this one where he introduced Kiri and Tuk to his spirit brother 😮‍💨
He was looking out for her through the whole movie, and wasn’t the bully who called her a freak as I initially thought. He was a Kiri fan from day one ~

HOW were the vampires sneaky i am so so glad my dearest mutuals are getting into it..
I'm so glad you asked!!! My feelings abt the show are generally positive but a bit up n down in terms of how invested i am in particular episodes or characters and I've been churning it over in my head for a while to figure out what exactly it is that does or doesn't compel me. I did read the first book a few years ago and watched the 90s movie as well so i have plenty of thoughts about how the series compares to the og story (haven't read the other books in the series tho)
I think making the queerness of so many characters overt and bringing it to the foreground so much does WONDERS for the show in terms of themes being commented on, and same goes for making louis and claudia black. Like the way it reframes vampirism as self empowerment and self acceptance, the impetus for lestat's targeting of louis being that he's a brilliant and deserving man forced to hide himself and cower before his white peers... It just makes everything click and make so much more sense than in the book where louis was just some random shmuck... The way becoming a vampire is a deal where you exchange power and self-acceptance for having to hide from the world, and joining a coven is a deal where you gain the love (well, "love") and support of people like you but you can't ever leave mmmm. The commentary 👌👌👌
Basically jenny nicholson once commented on how vampirism is kind of the ultimate selfishness/ultimate assertion of one's right to stay alive and thrive by whatever means necessary, even by hurting other people, and i just think that metaphor makes a LOT more sense with a queer black character than with a white vaguely homoerotic plantation owner. For louis as he is in the show it's so much more of a nuanced thing to become a vampire and i love it.
The cast have their ups and downs but overall i like them a lot! I loved louis's early era when he was trying to exist as both human and vampire, and i think my favourite moments of his are those paradigm shift scenes of high emotion that change the status quo - his confession and turning, his murder of that business partner, his finding claudia, the "you and me" moment if reconciliation.... AHHH THE YOU AND ME..... I think that's my take in general, that I'm into the really big emotional moments and i check out a bit during the "status quo" periods where characters are just going about their lives building tension towards the next breaking point. Whether happy, like the louis/claudia/lestat family life montage, or melancholy, like louis sulking after his fight with lestat, they sometimes fail to keep my attention fully.
Lestat I'm not as into... armand i quite like although i think i would've liked him to ham it up just a liiiiiittle bit more. claudia is really strong, i think her internal conflict is one of the best conveyed ones. I do think making her a teenager instead of however old she was in the book (was it 6? 7? 8?) is a bit of a cop out in terms of examining the tragedy of her vampirism. Like I fully get why they went with a character who can be believably played by an adult actress but it DOES greatly undercut the tension of the original concept. In the book it's kind of dubious whether she would have ever been able to find real, adult love with someone who didn't mind her appearance of a VERY YOUNG CHILD. It was even left kind of vague what her real mental state was - was it possible for her to truly have "the mind of an adult" without physical development? What does that even mean in this situation? The thought experiment of what it would be like to live for several decades in the body of a child was a very interesting part of Claudia's character to me and personally i would have liked that to be explored a bit more thoroughly. But like i said, I totally get that casting an older actress and adjusting the character's age accordingly let the showrunners do things with her writing that would have been off the table otherwise.
Also a major complaint from me would be that I'm just not that convinced by all the really important, really intense romantic relationships that the show kind of revolves around. Even at the peak happiness point of both relationships, i just never really felt like louis and lestat or Louis and armand liked to spend time with each other, especially to the point of considering each other immortal companions lol... But here's the thing, vampiric loneliness is such a huuuuuge factor in why these people cling to each other and we never really get to SEE what that loneliness is like. It only really clicked for me when lestat talked about it during the trial, and that's so late in the game! We never actually see lestat or louis or armand BE LONELY AND SAD, and i think if i saw that it would make me a lot more understanding of why these companionships form. To be fair though i often fail to understand why ppl in media are in love so i might be a bit biased lmao

Happy Birthday Temptation!
Ahhh I can't believe it's been a year already. This is one of the fics I am most proud of because I tried something new (and I am very bad at that).
Little fun fact: As an 80s kid I adore the movies of that time (especially 90s and early 00s!) and I wanted to write this as a Basic Instinct inspired Oneshot. LOL
It turned into 26k and I'm happy it did. It was so much fun writing this.
If you have read it pleaseeee tell me what you think and if not you can read it here 😁😉:

Just watched Damsel and I reaally do not get the hype ngl.
Like... Possibly bc my first exposure to her was Enola Holmes, but something a bit Millie Bobby Brown's performance is jarringly broody (like, in a dcu batman way, not in a well-written batman way-) and the talking to herself sounds less like an actual 'Stressed as fuck twenty-something clinging desperately to her last shred of sanity-' more "Enola Holmes' snarky audience asides" which just did not. Fit.
Which was especially egregious when she spends 90% of the film entirely alone, despite several opportunities to fix this- either by making the dragon a more present and constant threat, doing more than one cryptic dream sequence with the ghosts, having her dad actually speak with her instead of apologising through desperate yelling and the narrative not even giving her time to like. React to that. She didn't know that-
Or the REALLY interesting one, which realising they weren't doing was what honestly made me check out of the movie entirely: the other girl she'd been making eyes at who got sacrificed just before her? Would Not Have Been Hard to just. Have her survive. And I, obviously, am leaning towards a ship there, but even just giving her someone to play off of would've done wonders for the pacing, especially for the exposition.
Meanwhile the plot was so busy being subversive it forgot to be coherent? Like. The dragon was already annoying, but then she killed Eloide's dad and just lost all sympathy from me. He literally spelled it out to her that he is a narrative parallel to the guy who killed her kids and she doesn't realise. That she's become the monster she hated. And just. Ahhh-
Also! That ending.
Total girl boss moment! Slaughtering your way through an innocent kingdom because the Queen (not the king, note, and the Prince was shown to be against it but spineless against his mean mother, bc nothing says girl boss like that old chestnut) and some creepy masked people did the only thing they could do to protect their kingdom from an unreasonable, illogical and unstoppable force holding a centuries long grudge. (Do we see their thoughts? No? They're just mean in one scene and so we're meant to ignore their lack of other choices?)
And then. Boat! And Dragon friend! Because its not like it was literally the first thing the film established, that her home was struggling with an issue a fire breathing dragon would be super helpful with dealing with, or anything- look, adventures!!!! Boats!!!

i’m trying to write a dally (my man🤭) x reader fic but i literally don’t know how to start.. like yn sounds like a literal pick me girl cause she hangs out with the guys n likes to fight 💔 your writing is so good so like do you have any tips for writing / smut for the outsiders?? also if i end up finishing it can i @ you in it??? i hope u have a good day n halloween!🤗
AHHH I'm so happy you came to me for this :DDD
For YN, I almost always do something I would do or something in like- old 90s movies. I make YN as generic as possible so they'll fit everyone. If you have YN as a more feisty kind, I would definitely try and include that in the writing
Next, for Dally's personality, I'd suggest doing a short analysis. Like, how does he view YN? Is he rough in this fic, gentle, etc? It's good to get a base line down so your writing can be clear!
And smut is really just all about being descriptive so the picture you make in your head is clear lol. I'd love if you tag me in it and I hope this helps a bit 😅

top 5 books 🧐
Ahhh cruel cruel. I'm gonna try not to overthink this and just go with my gut
1. Vurt by Jeff Noon. Truly bizarre cyberpunk fever dream from the 90s.
2. The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle. Similar to the movie, much sadder but also often much funnier.
3. Pearls of Lutra by Brian Jacques. This book has made me cry more than once, and I literally used to larp on the playground as one of the main characters.
4. The Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir. (cheating I know). These books grabbed me by the throat and threw me headlong into a hyperfixation that has been consuming me ever since. The audiobooks are STUNNING
5. Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao. What if Pacific Rim got mixed up with Chinese history. Feminine rage, polyamory, and morally ambiguous characters I can't help but love.
honorable mention: Phoenix Extravagant by Yoon Ha Lee. A gorgeous alternate history/fantasy set in Korea during Japanese occupation. Some of the best NB/wlw/bi rep I've read.
I'm sure if asked tomorrow I'd have a different list RIP I read a lot and I'm indecisive
