Agoraphobe
four walls cradle me i know everything inside
safe in this cozy place familiarity is a soft embrace
a window would be suffocating in its depth and possibility
finally free in the capsule limitless in the box
there is no door: you can't get in

Madeline's mask is like, a curse or something and she cant take it off. Adelaide wears her mask and her gloves as like, a choice (doesnt take them off). Im not sure if im going to like, make a comic about them? or something? or if they will just continue to be little guys that live in my head. we will see what i discover about them

Previous / Next
The Top Dog
Vladislaus Straud:
Founder of Forgotten Hollow, de facto ruler
Lilith’s estranged (it’s complicated) sire
Enjoys lurking (read: eavesdropping) from afar
Cagey about his past, claims not to recall his years as a human (if he ever was one?)
Rumblings of discontent with his antiquated  ways
Empire may be crumbling (if rotting, junk-filled castle is any indication)
(Lilith: And that god awful crow! It’s got to be as old as he is. Christ, the racket it makes!)
Veronica Aurelius:
Straud’s new protege (niece?)
Related through a distant bloodline (Lilith: Allegedly.)
Accomplished artist, historian, medium
Dreams led her to Forgotten Hollow (Lilith: Doubtful.)
Lilith’s replacement? (Lilith: He wishes.)
(Caleb: She looks sweet, but there’s a vicious streak beneath that glossy veneer.)
-
The Old Guard (Lilith: In other words, Straud’s minions.)
Elle DeVampiro, Inna Cents, Vlad Bloodvein:
aka The Nobles (Lilith: Fossilized Bitch, Slightly Less Fossilized Bitch, and The Inferior Vlad.)
Council of ancients who guard town’s borders from human trespassers
View vampirism as elite society: only most deserving should be initiated
Have hazing rituals to weed out weaklings
Never-ending blood supply flows from mysterious sources
Eternal life of ease has left them physically weakened, social status protects them
(Helena: Hazing rituals?
Caleb: Mind tricks. Intimidation tactics. Like humans, newborn vampires can be manipulated.
Lilith: Stop scaring her! A strong breeze could knock them over.)
Claudius and Marie Bouvet:
aka The Occult Hunters
Hunt spellcasters for their power
Hunt “exotic” occults (mermaids, aliens, fairies, etc.) to siphon and sell blood, consumed as an indulgent luxury
(Helena: Wait, you’re telling me mermaids and aliens are real?
Caleb: We exist. Is it really so hard to believe they do too?)
Hunt werewolves for sport (owing to centuries-long feud)
Sometimes hired to kill vampires if deemed a threat to community’s existence
(Helena: Werewolves!
Lilith: They smell like wet dog and taste awful.
Caleb: That hardly gives us the right to kill them.
Lilith: Oh, so we should just let them kill us?)
Elizabetha Bathoris:
aka The Gossip Hound (Lilith: She deserves a far nastier title. Sanctimonious cunt.)
Forgotten Hollow’s premier shit-stirrer
Rumored to bathe in virgins’ blood
Delights in spilling secrets that aren’t hers to tell
Loudly claims to be Straud’s “one who got away,” though unconfirmed by man himself
(Lilith: [scoffs] There’s only room for one delusional narcissist in that household.
Caleb: Lilith, please. At this rate, we’ll never finish.)
Carmela Castellano:
Owns sprawling private vineyard in countryside where Forgotten Hollow and Windenburg meet
Crafts exclusive (and expensive) blood vintages
Known for frequently dipping into her own supply
Hoped to raise adoptive daughter Pandora as protege
However, Pandora’s rebelliousness has led to household tensions
(Lilith: Nothing rivals the rush of feeding, but her blends come damn close.)
-
The Enigmas (Lilith: No one knows shit about them, and that’s how they like it.)
Dorian Vasile:
Born vampire, not transformed
Agoraphobic recluse, never seen to leave ruined cottage
Once prominent member of vampire society with many friends — and enemies
Fatal end to human love affair rumored to have led to voluntary isolation
Griselda Oreolo:
(Caleb: I wouldn’t recommend wandering any graveyards at night unless you want to meet The Bride.
Helena: The Bride?
Caleb: She can be quite ruthless.
Helena: As if I don’t already have enough graveyard-related trauma.)
An aristocrat transformed on wedding day, fated to dwell forever on what could have been
Cemeteries are her favorite hunting grounds
Not one for friendly conversation
Defends self first and foremost, no allegiance to other vampires
Nyx?:
Origins, real name, language unknown
Lurks the forest like a cryptid - quick, silent, and deadly
Known to kill men, disposes of withered bodies like a cat leaving gifts of mice for its owner (Lilith: Honestly, good for her.)
Interrupt mid-hunt at your own peril
-
The Challengers
Emet and Maxima Galvus
Obscenely wealthy tech CEO and “granddaughter”
Whispers they’re both much older than they look, by hundreds or even thousands of years (Lilith: I’ve yet to see any proof of that.)
Seem to purposely cultivate air of mystery, socializing little
Keep small coven as waitstaff
Emet fiercely protective of Maxima, though is he protecting her from world or world from her?
(Caleb: Don’t be dramatic, Lil. Yes, that stare of hers is unsettling, but-
Lilith: There’s nothing more aggravating than a precocious child. I don’t trust her one bit.)
Ulric Blüt and Herta Nacht:
(Lilith: I can’t believe you think they warrant serious inclusion. A delusional brat and his pathetic enabler are hardly a threat.)
A supposed demon overlord in the body of a child and his “14th Seneschal”
Taken deadly seriously by himself and no one else
Boasts Grim Reaper fears him, many assassinations dodged
Except his strangely devoted companion
Companion stealthily observant, formulating plans of her own?
Details of supposed coup TBD
Countess Maria Francisca Flores:
Mad vampire scientist (Lilith: [scoffs] An old woman doing science fair experiments.)
Claims to have transformed herself via scientific methods
Seeks to grow her “House Flores” with new vampires devoted to pursuit of knowledge
Unpublished manuscript on vampire anatomy
Old Guard disapprove, but for now human academics remain steadfast in denial
Currently studying cowplants, which scholars can admit do exist
(Helena: If she turned herself into a vampire, can’t she reverse-engineer a cure?
Caleb: I’ve asked. She’s incredibly tight-lipped about her findings.
Lilith: Because they’re non-existent!)
-
The Next Generation
Beginning in ‘60s and ‘70s, an influx of new vampires into Forgotten Hollow
Old Guard bristle at modernism but grudgingly admit transplants necessary to keep town thriving
Recent turnees or experienced vamps who’d rather evolve with times than stay stuck in past
Tend to form cliques based on shared subcultures
Enjoy mixing with humans, easily mistaken as such by undiscerning eyes (often a deadly mistake)
Less concerned with secrecy, hedonistic, impulsive
(Lilith: “Not coincidentally, shortly after we returned, what was once a trickle became a flood.”)
Example: Grunge Gang
Kiona and Nikan: trouble-making twins, street smart, book stupid
Vonny: stoner type, prefers when meals come to him
Clarissa: paranormal investigator turned paranormally investigated
Tara: wants to be good, surrounded by bad influences
Pandora: favors rock concerts over wine-making
-
Lilith: Did you get all that down? Rest up! The hands-on portion begins tomorrow.

Hey!!! You commented on my post about limetown haha which is why I’m here. You offered to give podcast recs! What are your favorites?? I’m looking for some new ones
I completely forgot I had this ask, excuse the delay. Here's a selection of 30 podcasts I enjoyed from a broad range of genres: hopefully at least one appeals.
Let me know if you're after something more specific.
Arden: (Investigative, Comedy) On the 25th of December, 2007, heiress and young actress Julie Capsom crashed her car into a tree and fled into a nearby forest clearing, leaving a trail that seemingly vanished into thin air, and a dismembered torso in the trunk. A decade later, Bea, the first reporter on the scene, and Brenda, a detective on the case, are hosting a true crime podcast about it, and neither is remotely impressed with what the other has to say. Arden is also a retelling of various Shakespeare plays.
Desperado: (Supernatural, Adventure, Horror Elements) In a modern world of gods and magic, three young people, all under the patronage of death dieties, embark on the same adventure for different reasons: for safety, for revenge, and to kill The Old Man in the Sky. Fantastic banter and killer action sequences.
The Far Meridian: (Magical Realism) An agoraphobic young woman wakes one day to discover her lighthouse home has travelled to somewhere entirely unfamilar. As this continues to happen day after day, she uses the opportunity to search for her missing brother. A really unique and charming piece of fiction.
Gastronaut: (Sci-Fi) Interstellar travel audio blog of a former food critic as he travels to an active warzone to get firsthand experience with unfamilar cuisine. ft. Disgruntled martian nobility, sinister businessmen, explosive mushrooms, forbidden snacks, rogue revolutionary artists, and the consequences of your actions.
Girl in Space: (Sci-Fi) The Girl In Space lives alone on a space station, doing science, making cheese, rewatching Jurassic Park, and tending to the plants, animals, and artificial sun entrusted to her. It's a little lonely, but not a bad life. Would be a shame if someone came along to ruin it.
The Goblet Wire: (Microfiction, Weird Fiction) A surreal microfiction with horror elements, taking the form of phone calls to an audio-based game in which the voice of the mysterious Dictator leads each player through fantastic and horrific world and story.
Hello From The Hallowoods: (Horror, Supernatural) A dramatic entity beyond your comprehension visits your nightmares to tell stories of the people (in varying degrees of human and alive) that inhabit the strange, deadly, and beautiful Hallowoods, as they find meaning and sometimes eachother.
Hi Nay: (Supernatural Horror) A year after moving to Toronto, sound designer Mari finds herself drawn into helping people around the city with various horrific supernatural encounters due to her babaylan (shaman) family background. It quickly becomes apparent that there's something much more sinister and complicated happening in the background.
Inco: (Microfiction, Sci-Fi) A perpetually exausted interstellar information trader and her peppy AI find a mysterious (read: bratty) boy floating in space and are inadventently pulled into a world political intrigue.
Inn Between: (Fantasy) Ever curious about what the D&D characters get up to at the tavern between sessions? A generally lighter-hearted (with some exceptions) with richly-written and always-growing characters. A really interesting format, too: a lot of the adventure appears in the "next time" and "last time" segments which makes it all flow really nicely. Not a tabletop podcast.
Janus Descending: (Sci-Fi, Horror, Tragedy) A xenoarcheologist and a xenopaleontologist are sent to a study a dead city on a distant world. Nobody likes what they find there. A unique format, with one set of logs presented first to last, and the other last to first. I'd recommend listening to the supercut for this one.
The Kingmaker Histories: (Steampunk, Weird Fiction, Adventure, Fantasy Elements) In the Valorian Socialist Republic 1911, on her 25th birthday, tailor's apprentice Colette experienced the worst headache of her life. As a result, she fleed from town with a human artificer and a fae chef - both now smugglers - pursued by an utterly furious flesh-crafter. I'm not sure I'm selling how good this podcast is but it's very good.
Life With Althaar: (Sci-Fi, Comedy) A human repairman moves to a space station on the edge of human territory that is perpetually on the edge of self-destruction, and ends up with a less-than-ideal last-minute roomate. Althaar is polite, friendly, deeply interested in human culture, and eager to be friends. Unfortunately he belongs to a species that sends humans into a visceral panic at a glance.
Lost Terminal: (Sci-Fi, Hopepunk) Seth is a very lonely AI living on a satellite. His crew were left stranded aboard with no hope of return, and it's been longer than he can count since then. The Earth below him has changed dramatically, and with only a few other AI down there to talk to, he's very lonely. But! He has a plan to make some new friends.
Love and Luck: (Romance, Slice-of-Life and Urban Fantasy Elements) Voice messages cataloguing two young men falling in love and opening a queer dry bar together.
Midnight Radio: (Light Supernatural, Romance) Sybil McIntyre, host of the ever-popular 1950's nightly radio hour, begins exchanging letters with an old fan who has reluctantly returned to visit Sybil's beloved town.
Midst: (Weird Fiction, Western, Sci-Fi and Fantasy Elements) The old-western planetoid islet of Midst floats, rotating steadily, in a sea of reality-warping darkness. Down in the town of Stationary Hill, things are in movement, and vistors from the light above are about to bring unanticipated change. ft a monocycle-riding monster-hunter, radio-famous airship paladins, deadly mica, the universe's peppiest cultist, good dogs, and a really strange businessman.
The Mistholme Museum of Mystery, Morbidity, and Mortality: (Weird Fiction, Supernatural, Urban Fantasy and Horror Elements) A friendly AI tour guide leads you on a tour of the Mistholme Museum, explaining the strange and often alternatural story behind each item.
Monstrous Agonies: (Supernatural, Relationship Advice) An interpersonal advice show for supernatural entities and other people living liminally in the modern world.
Night Shift: (Urban Fantasy, Investigative) Set in a modern world with the addition of magic, which manifests in small inherited skills/traits, can warp people in horrific ways, or can be manipulated with the right science (and intense work) to induce superpowers. Sebastian Fenn is a barista at Night Shift Coffee, but since things are slow he's decided to start a podcast to talk about various mysteries, crimes and conspiracies around the city, and of course finds himself deeper in them than he'd intended.
The Pasithea Powder: (Sci-Fi, Thriller Elements? I think?) The last major interplanetary war was full of atrocities, but none more infamous then the creation of Pasithea Powder, a memory altering drug which was used to horrible effect and landed it's entire team of creators in prison. So when decorated war hero Captain Sophie Green sees one of them wandering free, worlds away from his prison, she gets in touch with a very old, estranged friend: one Dr. Jane Gonzalez, who's behind bars for the very same reason.
SCP: Find Us Alive: (Weird Fiction, Supernatural, Horror and Slice-of-Life elements) You don't need to know anything about SCP to enjoy this. A research team gets trapped in an underground research facility when the complex collapses and the building is dragged into a pocket dimension. The tear it was designed to study begins creating tiny copies of itself, generating strange entities the team needs to deal with. And as if that wasn't enough, the entire situation physically resets itself every 30 days. And yet, this is genuinely also an office comedy.
Second Star to the Left: (Sci-Fi) Audio logs of a scout sent to explore and establish early infastructure new world, and the communications with the minder in charge of keeping her alive.
Seen and Not Heard: (Slice-of-Life, Drama) Seen and Not Heard follows Bet, who's still adjusting to life a year after a bout of severe illness, and the resulting hearing loss it caused. It's about the ways we make connection, and food, and art, and different kinds of grief.
The Silt Verses: (Horror) In a modern world where gods are abundant, frequently both commercialised and restricted, two devotees of an outlawed river god go on a pilgrimage.
SINKHOLE: (Sci-Fi, Weird Fiction) Forum posts from a data restoration community in a near future where the human brain is its own computer and one city hosts a massive void.
Starfall: (Fantasy) Seeking to escape her mysterious past and find some purpose, a young swordswoman joins a travelling actor's troupe. This new life is unfamilar and sometimes stressful, but she's taken under the wing of stagehand Fel, who's determined to help her feel welcome as she experiences the figurative and literal magic of the theatre for the first time.
The Tower: (Weird Fiction) A low-key, meditative podcasy about a young woman who decides to climb a seemingly endless tower. Gorgeous sound design.
The Vesta Clinic: (Sci-Fi) New GP Dr. Fae Underwood, with the expert transcription skills of resident AI Sec, writes up patient reports on human and alien patients of The Vesta Clinic, a medical clinic on the edge of human space. Really comfy and creative.
Victoriocity: (Steampunk, Mystery) Set in the steam-powered Victorian city of Even Greater London, an aspiring journalist and a tired detective find themselves working together to solve a strange murder. I say Victorian but as queen Victoria is now an extensive grandiocity of cyborg components following seven only-kind-of-successful assassinations, you may need to adjust expectations a little.

oooh rent to own intrigues me 👀
hey buddy wanna buy a wip
rent to own!! the fic that was meant to be a kinktober fill for an android prompt and then i got emotionally invested as is traditional!!!
the og concept was just... android oscar, mechanic lando, oscar having some internal troubles like just this twisted cable that lando had to reeeach inside and untangle and then he got weird and horny about it you know. standard stuff. but THEN it started to grow legs and now it's just under 5k words and people have backstories and problems and feelings. hate that
basically lando's this anxiety-ridden social recluse in the not-so-distant future, he works from home doing graphic design and is like a hobby artist on the side? big sufferer of burnout, mildly agoraphobic, generally having kind of a bad time. he lives with max (fewtrell) with whom he has an on-again-off-again sexual relationship but it's pretty toxic in the sense that max is in a long distance relationship (with p) so the hookups are often like. soured. of course
SOOOO max goes away to visit p and is worried about lando being alone in the apartment because he's been worse lately, but conveniently their mutual friend is also going out of town so they hatch a 'sneaky' plan to have the friend's android stay with lando for a couple of weeks. they of course tell lando it's because the android needs looking after when well that certainly is not the case
anyway lando spends a couple of weeks with oscar the android. lando learns things about himself. they still have the moment of lando untangling one of oscar's wires for him and it being hornier than it has any right to be. otherwise it's a lot of sad starcrossed vibes i suppose!!!!
clip under the cut!!
Lando only sees Oscar once after the groceries are all done, and that’s because Oscar comes tip-toeing into his room to bring him food again. This time Lando’s gotten maybe half a sketch out of his brain and onto a page. It’s not exactly a victory, but he’s chipping away at something, finally.
“That’s nice,” Oscar says, setting a bowl of microwave something-or-other a safe distance from Lando’s keyboard.
Lando grunts, more than responds. He imagines Oscar’s voice sounds patronizing, condescending. Like oh, what a lovely picture, Lando. It’ll go right on the fridge.
It’s so rude of him to think that way, isn’t it? So unkind to assume Oscar’s immediately judging him or critiquing him. That’s what his old therapist might've told him, anyway.
“Sorry,” Lando says.
Oscar says, “What?”
Lando doesn’t move for a second, pencil poised at the edge of a kneecap taking shape on the page. His stomach quivers, trembles like an upset pudding.
Christ, he’s a mess.
“Nothing,” Lando says. “Thanks. Thank you.”

Do you like ISAT? ⭐️ Are you looking for more media to get into? Did you stumble across this post because you’re into one of the other projects mentioned here? (If yes, play In Stars in Time!!)
I’ll be dividing this up into sections based on the content in various Acts, so spoilers for each individual section below! I’ll be trying to avoid as much spoilers as possible for the other projects referenced here, for obvious reasons, but some concepts and thematic threads will be mentioned in order to give context.
This isn't a complete list, I'm sure I'll think of some perfect things to add here after I've posted it...Also sorrry most of these are video games.
Long post, so it'll be under a cut (But PLEASE PLEASE take a quick glance at the visuals/pictures I've provided and see if anything looks cool!)
If you’ve played up to Acts 1 & 2:
⋆ ˚。⋆౨ৎ˚ Madoka Magica ⋆౨ৎ˚⋆ ˚。
Okay, this one's a little obvious if you know a bit of anything about both of these. It's definitely the most well known piece of media on this list. Puella Magi Madoka Magica, also known as PMMM or Madoka Magica, is a magical girl show. Directed by Akiyuki Shinbo & Yukihiro Miyamoto and produced by Magica Quartet, it centers around magical girls who have to battle witches, and only gain their powers through contracts with an alien being. This also gives them one wish. ***MINOR spoilers for Act 4 of ISAT, skip if needed...Wishes, huh? Powerful and dangerous wishes, huh?***
The writing has a lot of depth to it, the bonds between the characters are interesting, and the narrative weight they have placed on their shoulders to save the world...well!
I have an important other reason why ISAT fans may really enjoy this series, but it would spoil a lot of the series... so first, some visuals, because this show is beautiful.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, now spoilers for Episode 10. These are pretty big spoilers, so avoid if you care about that sort of thing. I don't personally think it ruins the series to know about beforehand, but you do lose some of the surprise. ***Spoilers for Ep. 10 of PMMM, skip if needed: Well! It's a timeloop show. Specifically a timeloop centering one person who's terrified of loosing the person they love and prone to obsession.***
You can watch it on Crunchyroll, or you could watch it illegally on a few different pirating sites, it's not exactly obscure. There's the series, but also multiple movies. There's also a new movie coming out in 2025! Exciting!
˚ʚ♡ɞ˚ 1BitHeart ˚ʚ♡ɞ˚
1bitheart, created by Miwashiba and produced by PLAYISM, is a ?visual novel? I suppose. There are other mechanics besides just talking to people (mystery solving, gifting, walking), but that's the best way I can describe it. In 1bitheart, you experience the world through Nanashi's eyes, a severely agoraphobic guy. I feel like if you like Siffrin, you'll probably find him interesting. Honestly, I don't have much more to say here...just that the vibes of this game feel like something many ISAT fans might enjoy.
If you like dialogue and character building, then maybe give it a look! There's one more spoilery reason why you might find it interesting, but it's a major spoiler for BOTH games...so. I'll leave that for you to discover.
Visuals:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can buy 1bitheart here:
☆ The Endless Empty ☆
The Endless Empty, created by Erik Sheader-Smith, is another artistic RPG game with themes of suicidality, imagery of stars, and a fascinating battle system. It's very...scrapbook diary nightmare anatomical textbook, if that makes sense. It's short, inexpensive, obscure, and delightful, in my opinion. Guys. This is good.
Visuals:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Buy it here:
𓐟◇ OFF ◇𓐟
I see a lot of people around who are into both ISAT and OFF!, which I find supremely unsurprising. Both are created by French devs (OFF by Mortis Ghost), steeped in that background, unique RPG battle system (many enemies in this game are basically Sadnesses), limited palette (and often black & white) and [killed for spoilers].
I find the translation writing fascinating, personally. There's a lot you can dig out of here.
Visuals:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Get it here:
๑ï🌧Mr Rainer’s Solve-It Service🌧๑ï
Easily the most obscure game on this list, Mr Rainer's, created by Etherane, is an incredible game that's more of a visual novel than a text based adventure. The worldbuilding of the story is fascinating, and the characters are compelling. The story ends with SO MANY unanswered questions and mysteries, which is another reason why it fascinates me so.
Like ISAT, Mr Rainer's is a game pretty much entirely in black, white, and red, about an amnesiac hooded figure who doesn't remember their past and is INCREDIBLY fucking hungry constantly, a story with multiple endings, a story about identity and belonging and being the only one of your kind in a strange land, a story about grief and life and touch and connection and cycles of pain...
Please give it a chance, I have absolutely nobody to talk to about this game. It's only 5 hours and it's only (around) five dollars...
Visuals:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can get it here!:
If you’ve played the whole game + 2Hats (DO NOT READ ON IF YOU HAVE NOT DONE 2HATS!!! I AM WARNING YOU!!!):
⚂ ⊹.🂱 Yugioh (Specifically the Toei series and Duel Monsters)⊹. 🂱 ⚂
Well! Here it is! The series about friendship, "other you's", "you see everything I do and you know how my body reacts to things", "you’re me but also not me but also another me but also you’re NOTHING like me", "facade sees facade in the eyes and Knows" and [spoilers for Yugioh redacted].
Guys if you don't gaf about card games, in the Toei series they are an extremely small aspect of the show and other games (like Tamagotchi) are similarly important!
It's got a fucked up by grief and trauma guy who does morally grey stuff and is fixated on his own past and really does just deep down Want to be Useful!! It's also got a codependent protector who really needs to be protected! It's got GAMES!!! SO MANY GAMES!!! and DRAMA!

You can watch Duel Monsters many places, both legally and illegally.
⟳⏱︎ Start Again, duh! ⏱︎⟳
If you've only played ISAT but not Start Again (You know who the dev is...), you might think there's little of value there besides additional dialogue, but you'd be entirely wrong. Not only is this LOOP's story (and valuable to examine because of that), but the House is quite different, there's unique art, and there's different endings as well. PLAY START AGAIN START AGAIN START AGAIN: A PROLOGUE!!! YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!

✧♥ Hello Charlotte series ♥✧
Hello Charlotte, also created by Etherane, is an incredible series, and one of the three most impactful game series I've ever encountered. The amount of unexpected developments that happen...I couldn't possibly understand where the game was going until everything clicked at once. Personally I think it's a masterpiece of storytelling.
Another artistic RPG maker game- so of course the art is beautiful. There's a battle system...in one of the games...yeah it's rudimentary. It's more of an exploration/puzzle game than anything. It's more of a STORY than anything. I would really really really hate to spoil this game, but what I will say, is there's a reason why I put it in the 2hats section. A very good reason. Pleaseee check it out it's so much content for so incredibly cheap. Criminally cheap. You will become incredibly attached to Charlotte.

Note
hello ms. comrade Ironside, longtime reader, first time caller.
as a fellow writer of queer erotica, I was wondering if you had any thoughts/spoons to share those thoughts on wordpress being swept into the AI debacle under automattic? (I think that’s what you use to host your cool website, forgive me if I am mistaken.) I’m trying to figure out where to set up an author website of my own so I don’t have to host my stuff on tumblr anymore, but I’m a bit gun-shy in the current moment. I know AI trawling is inevitable in today’s internet, but as someone who’s been doing the indie author thing for some time (and admirably!), is there something you would recommend, best practices or otherwise, to someone just trying to get their metaphorical kite off the ground? or anything you wish you knew when you set up your own author-type socials? any thought at all would be genuinely appreciated.
thanks for your time, and I hope you and yours are as well as can be expected 🖤
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but afaik nothing approaching best practices has been figured out yet; it's all already happening and there's precious little as can be done to put the toothpaste back in the tube. Of course I uncheck all the little boxes in settings and deny them my consent or whatever, but I don't think a gaggle of unimaginative piss-bellied technocrats who decided it was a sensible use of vast amounts of water and power to teach a computer how to write very badly are what I'd call trustworthy. I'm still gonna move all my website shit off of Wordpress because they won't let me get rid of the stupid AI assistant thing, but that's more a case of their UI being ugly and dumb than me thinking it'll actually do any good.
Best I can tell you on that front is to try to find yourself a niche and develop yourself as an artist from there; "Write the kinds of books you wish other people were writing" is good general advice, and a human operator is always going to be capable of things a predictive network just isn't. Other ppl are gonna disagree with that, but they're wrong. Their understanding of resource allocation and scarcity is just childishly naive and you shouldn't waste your time listening to people who think we're gonna solve climate change with apps or whatever.
Far as social media goes, this is still the best one for hocking books as far as I can tell. I'm hearing a lot of good things about Cohost and Pillowfort, but their user bases are still quite small, and I haven't found the indie author community on Bluesky yet. If Tumblr goes belly up I'll probably end up migrating to one of those first two primarily b/c I think longform blogging is the secret stuff for ppl like me who are just too crabby and agoraphobic to be Twitter influencers; I may not be any good at videos or regular quick posts or documenting the writing process (which is too bad, b/c a lot of my friends who do that stuff seem to be having fun with it), but I sure can Lay Out Some Thoughts in A Few Paragraphs and I like to think that's something ppl expect from a novelist.
Also, never get in a public argument, don't go posting Your Thoughts On The Issues unless someone asked or you feel like you've got something interesting to say, and be very selective with how much and what personal information you give out to the hoi polloi. Those are my 3 rules for how to do social media good.

Alessandro Manzoni:
"wrote (and revolutionised) some of the most important literature, poems and plays of Italy. Also wrote a fantastic poem about the death of Napoleon but that's less important. He's hated by students state-wide in modern Italy which is why i think it would be funny for him to win. He was even neurotic and agoraphobic!”
Antoine-Jean Gros:
a. “One of Napoleon’s main painters. Pioneer of French Romanticism. Inspired many artists such as Delacroix and Géricault. He was very pretty.”
