i know this may be a shocker to some of you but sometimes... having a main character with flaws =/= bad main character.

main characters don't have to be Pure Golden Paragons of Your Particular Brand of Puritanical, Black and White Morality to be good characters in terms of writing

sometimes it's nice to have flawed main characters, like shen qingqiu, who have biases and whose narration is unreliable and who, though he develops through the course of the novel, still doesn't completely change everything about who he is.

that does not objective change the fact that his kindness and positive actions changed the fate of the characters in proud immortal demon way

because guess what? if people aren't perfect in real life, it sure as hell follows that characters don't have to be perfect either. people have many layers, and characters can, too. svsss gave us a richness of characters that are complex like that, that are as much capable of "good" and "bad", who are biased and blind and oblivious and react to things in complex ways.

so please.... just because sqq didn't immediately absolved your fav from all his faults because he find out about his past abuse in a "oh so he was a slave!! he was abused!! poor baby!! this explains everything and justifies all his actions and absolves him of his crimes!!!", doesn't mean he didn't feel sympathetic, doesn't mean he didn't acknowledge that shen jiu was a person, doesn't mean he now has an understanding that he didn't have previously. the trauma sj suffered doesn't justify how he hurt others.

THE SAME WAY that because he had the system breathing on his neck doesn't justify sqq for hurting lbh. the same way that the abuse he suffered doesn't justify bingge's cruel and tyrannic actions, nor his overblown revenge.

all of this characters are flawed and complex and carry with them an humanity that makes them compelling and deeply interesting; trying to point fingers and put the blame on everything that happened in One Particular Character takes away their agency about their own fates and the impact and consequences their actions have on others and the world.

“Sarge, I need you.” She says quietly, stepping out onto the balcony where Bucky leans against the railing, having his midnight smoke, the backdrop of the restless city and its lights illuminated behind him.

“What do you need from me?” He asks, taking a long drag off his cigarette.

“Just-“ She releases a shaky breath, catching her bottom lip between her teeth to keep it from quivering. “Can you just touch me?” She questions in a whisper, moving closer to him.

“Touch you? He asks, raising an eyebrow and slowly exhaling a cloud of smoke. “What’s the matter, doll? Can’t sleep? You wantin’ me to hold you again?”

She shakes her head, catching his wrist and plucking the cigarette from his hand, stamping it out on the railing.

“I need you to touch me.” She says firmly, lifting his hand and resting his palm against her cheek. “Please.”

He lowers his gaze to meet her, concern evident in his blue eyes as he gently strokes his thumb back and forth across her cheek.

“Are you sure?” He asks in a low voice.

“Am I-“ She stammers. “Yes. Yes, I’m sure. Please. Just touch me. I need this, I need you.”

His thumb stills and he lowers his head, nuzzling his forehead against her temple.

“Doll.” He warns, taking in her scent with a shuddered inhale.

“We drew that line. We set those boundaries. Once we cross it there isn’t any coming back. I need you to be sure.”

“Fuck the line.” She whispers, her breath fanning across his neck and sending a shiver up his spine.

“Fuck the boundaries. And for the love of God, Sarge, please just fuck me.”

Outline for modern genderbend svsss au where they're all trans milfs (except for Binghe who is trans still but not a milf) cinematic universe:

[Act 1] Shen Yuan was on his path to a teaching degree at age 22~23 and began shadowing high school tenured teacher Shen Jiu (no relation, they just have the same last name and hate it) where he changes a young Binghe's life by protecting him from bullying and just generally being a better teacher than sj. Right before Binghe's last year of school, sy's health takes a sudden decline, he's hospitalized, and he has to postpone his degree. Through a miscommunication, Binghe believes that sy was fired for having too much contact w Binghe and is now somewhere else- devastated, he enrolls at the prestigious, yet secretly abusive, uni that sy had pushed him to apply to, with the goal of becoming successful enough to pull strings and give sy whatever he wants

[Act 2] While hospitalized, Shen Yuan staves off boredom by being terminally online. Through this, he meets and quickly becomes unlikely friends with 40 something year old mid tier author Shang Qinghua. Sqh offers sy an admittedly unglamorous job as her editor since he's pretty much given up on his degree at this point, as well as a place to stay away from his family when he gets out of the hospital. Sy accepts and after moving in, gets to know sqh, who is a trans woman who transitioned in her 30s when her first big book deal put her in a stable enough position to do so. Sy realizes she is also trans; the two gradually make sqh's newest work a bestseller and she's suddenly inundated with publishing and movie deals. Happy times. Meanwhile, Binghe becomes a demon (frat boy)

[Act 3] Sy hits 30, now comfortable in her cushy job as sqh's editor/agent. Unfortunately, she is tragically diagnosed with breast cancer shortly after her birthday. She undergoes a double mastectomy and luckily fully recovers with a strong support network, but the stress has taken its toll on her and her health and she begins going grey early. Binghe, now also a girl yippee, received unexpected inheritance money sometimes during uni and used it to become a highly successful businesswoman with connections throughout the education, political, and publishing spheres (because she remembers shen yuan was a big reader and wanted to be a lit professor). Now on the hunt for her old teacher, she's tipped off to her new life by business partner gilf-fucker Mobei Jun (38) who recently started seducing sqh

heya! i just rewatched your sc2020 video…again… and then found out you're on tumblr and, of course, immediately went to look if you've posted anything about sj aswell and found that post from *checks notes* 1.5 months ago - so, i guess what im here to ask is, would you mind elaborating on that?

im unfamiliar with marble blast (im so sorry i do not have the brainpower to watch your essay on that...yet) so the comparison you make is not particularly useful to me :v

also for context, i did contribute to sj, specifically playtesting and programming, so i do have Opinions™ (that im gonna keep to myself due to lack of anon ask (not a bad thing! i understand why you have it off)) and i wonder if those happen to bleed through to the player experience or if your gripes with it are something different entirely.

well, firstly, i have developed such a deep seated hatred of the celeste community that i haven't opened the game in months and i've considered just deleting my spring collab video multiple times, I'm not finishing any more of my maps because I don't want to make anything for these people. so i didn't actually finish SJ, I did everything up to & including the easy half of the grandmaster lobby though, and my take is that even with the few miracles I found within the map list, it would not have inspired a video essay on the level of the spring collab one if I'd played it first. it's just not as interesting, and not as rewarding to study. it represents a horrible misattribution of priorities that permeates the entire community.

in that video, i confidently say that spring collab is ALWAYS interesting, because modding culture is interesting even if it's interesting for being a little bad or revealing something about the author's proclivities. strawberry jam represents a near unanimous drive to remove authorship and make levels that are impartially agreeable, to make Celeste 2. it's only interesting when the mapper does something interesting on purpose, like Paint, Pointless Machines, Undergrowth, Summit Down-Side or Flipside Cliffside. a path of least resistance emerged in the time between SC2020 and Strawberry Jam, and experiencing it in this quantity made me forget what I liked about this game or this modding scene in the first place. the volume of creative gimmicks and varied aesthetics is huge, but each one starts to feel identical after being ground through this particular jank-averse process. I still have strong opinions about every map in SC2020, even the ones that might seem unremarkable, I can only barely begin to quantify the entire fucking C tier of my SJ tierlist. it's diverse on the surface but the substance is homogenous, especially intermediate through expert.

also in my SC2020 video, I talked about a certain tension that arrives once you get to the expert lobby, where the mappers had to create uncommercial levels of difficulty that rubbed against a similar apparent drive to make the player feel like they're actually doing the challenge & not just watching it. strawberry jam arrives at this conflict far earlier, the INTERMEDIATE maps and onwards are the ones that seem to pull between making interesting challenges while also having the player be an agent in those challenges. they want the intermediate levels to feel hard, look cool, and the solution is to just make them ridiculously constrained so the only way is the ~satisfying~ way. that's why I won't make a video about strawberry jam, because many segments in my spring collab video already serve as criticism for strawberry jam. it made the same mistakes again, but worse, and with far less of the things that made me love spring collab in spite of its flaws.

here's my tierlist, if there are any questions i'll try and qualify any of these takes with what i can remember from playing it. however, for reasons stated previously I won't be playing more so this is probably gonna be it.

i reread pick your poison earlier this week, and my favorite bits of these books are the 'ruby busts the case wide open while everybody stares at her' scenes. also, any excuse to draw blacker.

(A label pointing to her states that she is "getting better at impulse control".) Blacker lets out a small laugh and SJ walks away holding the bottle, saying "Always wise." 1935 Duesenberg SJ Gurney-Nutting Speedster

The Speedster body was fitted to chassis number 2614, which is believed to be the last Duesenberg chassis produced in 1935. The body was designed by A. F. McNeil and built by J. Gurney Nutting & Co. Ltd. in the fashionable Chelsea district in London. 

The one-of-a-kind luxury automobile was built for Maharaja Holkar of Indore, India and commissioned through a British sales agent R.S.M Automobiles Ltd of London. 

Destined for a life of royalty, the Gurney Nutting Speedster was built with unique, lavish features including a rumble seat with a concealed fold-down step built into the sides of the body for easy access, as well as red and blue lights on the front fender to indicate whether the Maharaja (red) or Maharani (blue) was driving the vehicle.

Upon its completion, the Duesenberg was delivered to the Maharaja’s mansion in Santa Ana, California due to fears of Japan invading India. After the tension in the region dropped, the automobile was shipped to India, then disappearing over time and thought to be lost until its rediscovery in 1959. 

The outstanding auto was brought back to the U.S., eventually acquired by General Lyon. Restored with all of its royal touches retained, the 1935 Duesenberg placed first in the Maharaja Class at the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and will now be showcased at the 2019 La Jolla Concours d’Elegance under the Registered Class: American Classics Open (1920-1948).

The idea's been brought up many times how SJ may not entirely be gone and is being used to power the system's easy mode and autoplay functions for SY, which I've been gradually coming around to because system is definitely not all powerful and can only have limited influence- after all it needed an agent/host in the first place and couldn't just take full control of SJ's actions when SJ's will was still there, and so on so forth-, so I imagine when that does happen, SQQ's eyes shift to a darker shade. He may or may not be aware though I'm leaning more on not aware because..... Well, that depends on how much angst you want to fit in that car.

Personally, I don't like the whole light and dark association for SY and SJ respectively, I definitely Don't buy to the whole Perfect Saint Shen Yuan, but I don't hate him either, I don't actually dislike any character, every one has their place, and also as a fan of Actually-Scummy-But-Not-In-The-Way-They-Think-Scummy Shen Jiu, I'm of the belief that preserving the self-centered and disassociated-to-the-point-of-careless-cruelty-and-selfishness modern guy Shen Yuan is very, very important. They're both a flavor of 'will not drop kick a baby unless-', like, if Qi-ge was in dire and mortal danger and the baby is a half-demon. and. if someone will set off a bomb and will only drop kick very lightly I swear. But I digress, I went off a bit here.

This is because a screen light's reflection makes someone's eyes lighter, right? Yes.

So my original idea kind of ended here but my phone was out of battery for a couple hours so that had the chance to simmer in my head.

Anyways, this is noticed by the other Peak Lords.

(This could be LiuJiu, with particular attention put in the Ling Xi Cave scene. Or MuJiu just because (I'm crazy about them). But mostly this goes along with my Peak Lords are Actually Siblings Dynamics I've only lightly touched upon so far Take a look at my 'What If idea post-PIDW canon' rant here.)

Day 14: Blood-Stained Tiles

(I call this one: ‘My New Roommate is an Immortal Cultivator?!’)

Shen Yuan had been looking forward to the convention. He had brought tickets months ago, marked out on the map where all his favourite fanartists would be selling merch, and had eaten a large meal before setting out so he wouldn’t be tempted by overpriced vending machine food. He had wandered through the stands for a few hours, picking up some posters and fancomics as he went, and taking some photos of cosplayers, until the convention came to a close. There was a lot more Proud Immortal Demon Way fanart going around now — with the sudden surge it had in popularity after the Immortal Alliance Conference arc, it was to be expected, and Shen Yuan was looking forward to the new readers catching up to the latest chapters of the Abyss arc and making fanart for it.

He had just left the building when he heard the disturbance, and his head twisted towards the sound — almost missing the woman in a somewhat revealing outfit running past him in a panic. Freezing for a moment, he wondered if he should run as well, before he spotted a body slumped on the ground ahead of him, not moving. It was late and the area was usually a quiet one after work hours, so no one else was around to help… He rushed over to him without really thinking. Wasn’t that what you were meant to do? Well, if he died, at least he might get a segment on the local news.

The slumped over figure turned out to be a man, one wearing an ornate xianxia cosplay. It had to be homemade with the level of detail, and Shen Yuan felt oddly jealous of it. What was more concerning was the bloodstain quickly spreading across the fine green fabric, some of it dripping down onto the stone tiles of the path beneath them. Shen Yuan fought back the panic as he tried to remember what little he knew about first aid — he should apply pressure to the wound to try and stop the bleeding, right?

As he pressed down the man seemed to notice him for the first time — he really had a handsome face, and Shen Yuan wondered if he was an actor he didn’t know — only to try and push him away.

“Who are you?” he asked with an odd intensity.

“Um” said Shen Yuan. “My name is Shen Yuan. Did you get stabbed?”

The man nodded solemnly — really, if he wasn’t an actor already, Shen Yuan would volunteer to be his agent — before explaining that he’d seen a man harassing a woman about her clothing, and had stepped in to help, only to discover that the man was armed with a knife. He hadn’t reacted fast enough to avoid it, but luckily the man had run away after the first stab.

Shen Yuan felt that he was being a bit too casual about attempted murder, but maybe it was shock?

“Do you need me to call an ambulance? You’re bleeding a lot, it’ll probably need stitches…”

“Oh no,” said the man, seemingly unaware of the bombshell he was about to drop on Shen Yuan, “I’m a cultivator. Whatever brought me here might have disrupted my qi, but I’ll be fine once I have a chance to stabilise it”.

Shen Yuan froze. Could this be — no, he needed evidence first.

“… if you’re a cultivator, can you show me something that only a cultivator could do?”

The man — Shen Yuan suddenly realised he never asked his name — smiled, something like approval in his eyes, although Shen Yuan couldn’t guess why, and lifted up his hand — only for some of the leaves on the hedge lining the pathway to snap off, dancing around them in a flurry of green. Shen Yuan could barely bring himself to speak — this was really… an actual reverse transmigrator! Right before him!

“I just realised I never asked… what’s your name?”

The cultivator — a real life cultivator! — paused for a moment before introducing himself.

“My name is Shen Jiu.”

(Note: if you think SJ is being too nice here — he currently thinks SY is a girl because he’s a self-described pretty boy and SJ doesn’t know the cultural standards of this new world yet. Also the blood loss).

Sharks' preference was to sign him after the national championship game

AHL time? Something he's open to doing if the team deems necessary. Likely not though, but will depend on how he does in the NHL. Because they think the team he was on, Boston College, would be comparable to a good team in the AHL. [So competition is comparably similar to the level of hockey he played -- obviously still different in a lot of ways. But aspects of it are still valuable for his development because of the experience he'll get playing/practicing with & against pro players who have been in the league for a while -- in addition to the prospects that are called up and down from the league]

He made his decision on May 3 before leaving for worlds, before the draft lottery (drafting Macklin wasn't really a factor in his decision), and that's [probably] when he told Ryan and Gabe :(

At Worlds, he said the decision was 'up in the air' because [in order of greatest to least importance]:

He wanted to do it with his family & friends at home on the Tuesday

His sister's graduation was in May (which he couldn't attend since he was at Worlds). She's been a huge support for him since day one, and he didn't want to take away the spotlight from her for those few days [I love their sibling bond 🥺]

His playing time was inconsistent for him at worlds, so others on the team were getting the spotlight -- didn't want to draw attention away from the tournament for team USA

Funny tidbits

He has a horrible name for Twitter/Google search optimization. Will Smith SJ? Will Smith Sharks? Passable. Will Smith Hockey? Superior - definitely not biased :)

If you say anything mean about Will on sjs channels, his agent is subscribed to those, so he will hunt you down on his burner accounts (lowkey a joke lol)
