“Cybermen so bloated with mechanical parts, only cold logic stifles their natural urge to scream in agony. How can you do that to your own people? Because we're dying. That's why we're screaming! We've been trapped down here so long, we daren't even step out on our own planet's surface. Just the thought of the vast, empty sky drives us insane. Only Cybermen can go out there and save us. Save you? That means nothing to them. You've no idea what you're creating. No Cybermen, no life.”

This brief exchange from Age of Steel seems to summarize David Tennant's approach to acting. (sincere)

Does Harry Sullivan (Companion of the Fourth Doctor) remind anyone of Mickey Smith in terms of how the Doctor treats them?

i saw the deleted scene from 'doomsday' when rose jumps into pete and jackie's hug and i understand why it was deleted.
it would have been strange to build up how rose would literally alter a timeline for her father, seek him out again after that disaster, get rejected by him and it break her, and suddenly get another opportunity to have the family unit she was robbed off...only to have rose to leave it behind to stay with the doctor.
if the scene had stayed, in order to make it make sense, rose would have had to visibly struggle with the decision to stay or leave. even maybe pete puts the necklace on her instead of the doctor. because she's almost getting what she's wanted for so long. i still think she would have chosen to return - but not to stay permanently with the doctor, but simply because rose tyler cannot stand to sit back when she knows she can help, especially if the doctor has to do it alone.
so when she inevitably almost dies, maybe don't let her see who saves her and have her have that moment to see who does - pete. she would still cry, be devastated but it would be different. she loses the doctor but that rejection from earlier is repaired.
even if it still seems crazy that rose would ultimately reject her family, it makes sense in the episode, to have rose not join in the embrace and leave it for jackie. because she thinks now jackie will be okay. still naive bcause jackie hasn't had pete for years but she had her daughter, you can't just replace family members with others. but she clearly thinks jackie will be okay. she let go of pete after the rejection in 'the age of steel' too. i don't think it was just to get a dramatic shot of her slapping her hands on the wall and bawling her eyes out *away* from pete was coincidence. because her prioritises change in series 2. if the scenario i mentioned above happened, i think she would have allowed him to comfort her. on bad wolf bay, i think both her parents would have run to her. however, they all stand back, and pete's distance (although he clearly wanted to be there for her) is on purpose.
partially because of the obvious grief of rose, but because now, in an eerie mirror to 'father's day, once again, pete tyler stands between what rose wants the most and what she cannot have.

S2E5 & S2E6 - Rise of the Cybermen & Age of Steel
Tumblr media
★★★☆☆
This pair of episodes seems pretty divisive when I read the online commentary. For fans of ClassicWho, the re-introduction of another top tier Doctor Who enemy - the Cybermen - felt flat, void of the intrinsic characteristics that were supposed to make these creatures truly terrifying and reduced to glorified robots.
I fall outside of this camp, but I do wish the episodes really focused more on why Lumic saw the Cybermen as a solution and no one else seemed to share his vision of prolonging life beyond a mortal human body. It is an alternate universe after all, surely humans in that universe might have their priorities in a different order.
Speaking of different worlds, the real standout of this story for me was Mickey. The tin dog of the crew, seemingly with no real purpose in his own world, finds himself face to face with Ricky and realises he actually is capable and can make something of himself. The penultimate scene where the Doctor gives a coded message for Mickey to disable the inhibitor is where he shines and show that he really is more than just a tin dog. He’s got skills. I enjoyed seeing this character growth and his decision to stay behind in the alternate universe seemed to be the first time he made a properly considered, mature decision that didn’t revolve around Rose. Good on him.
Other than that, we got some grisly scenes of human to Cyberman conversion, Rose meeting her alt-Father and alt-Mother (and seemingly not understanding why Pete would not jump universes with her despite knowing her for 0.2 seconds...) and the foundation for what is going to be an emotional series finale. I can sense the Doomsday angst approaching and I will have to be ready for it.
QUOTE:  “Mickey, where’d you learn to fly that thing?!” “Playstation. Just hold on Rose. I’m coming to get you.”

Every Doctor Who Story → Age of Steel
"The Cybermen won't advance. You'll just stop. You'll stay like this forever. A metal Earth with metal men and metal thoughts, lacking the one thing that makes this planet so alive. People. Ordinary, stupid, brilliant people."
