Background: Born in a small town in Brodia, she was raised by a family with a skilled father in woodcrafting. Her father suffered from an injury that required him to work less than he was capable of. This left Agate furious over her inconsiderate brother, and took it upon herself to take care of their parents. Learning that joining the Brodia army can provide the support for her parents, she took up her father’s sword and charged into the Brodian castle demanding a fight with Damiant, only to accidentally walk upon a small Alcryst (of course, sending him to a fit of sobbing that drew Damiant’s attention). Ever since then, she has become a loyal and diligent captain known as the Falcon of Brodia due to her agility and endurance.

You were sure it was a one-night stand. It had to be one. Being completely honest, you weren't even looking for anything more than that. You bumped into him by chance on the way out of a bar not far from home. The pure coincidence that led to unforseen circumstances that's what it was. You saw Kento Nanami not only as the best candidate to pass the lonely night with, but also as a breathtakingly handsome young man whose shiny agates had been studying your figure for a long time already. A win-win situation for the both of you, right? As cliché as it might sound, you ended up in one bed that night, and the next one, and one more, and another one, and...

Carefully, as if not to disturb your sweet slumber, little golden sunbeams crept into the bedroom, glinting off the polished surfaces, jumping away, climbing up the cool floor and covering the soft peach walls. Some of them, the curious ones, trampled the white starched sheets to catch a glimpse of your face, making a quick run across your features and disappearing into the darkness of the hallway. Your lashes fluttered slightly and your nose wrinkled as you felt the cold slowly envelop your feet, peeking out from under the blanket. You frowned and cracked your eyes open, realizing once again that this wasn't your bedroom, and that underneath the blanket, which was halfway to the floor, was nothing but your naked body. You turned your head, hoping to see a familiar silhouette, but the spot next to you was empty and had long since lost the warmth of another body. You lifted yourself onto the bed and saw your clothes carefully folded on a nearby chair. So thoughtful, you smiled, wrapping yourself in the blanket and quietly creeping in its direction. He must have already left for work, and that definitely is the best outcome possible, ran through your head, yet somewhere in the back of your mind, you desperately hoped you were wrong. You didn't like the thoughts you started to have about him. You didn't like the way his words and actions started to fluster you. You didn't like the way the brief kisses here and there started to turn into more intimate, deep, devouring even. And as you almost reached your destination point your eyes were met with a pair of honeyed orbits peering out from behind the slightly ajar door, curiously watching every of your awkward moves.

Kento pressed his lips into a thin line, trying his best not to burst out laughing. The last thing he expected to see, carrying breakfast to your or rather his bed, was you wrapped up in a blanket, looking like a little marshmallow, your hair disheveled, poking out from under your made-up garment. A few strands covered your eyes and you vainly tried to blow them off your flushed face.

"Are you trying to sneak away, lil cloud?" Kento walked into the bedroom and carefully placed the tray on the nightstand. He wore nothing but a pair of linen slacks that hung on his hips. His tanned figure, illuminated by the rays of light, seemed to have just stepped out of some ancient frescoes. His hair was slightly mussed up from sleep, his glasses long forgotten somewhere. So homely, you dared to think, literally swooning just by looking at his gorgeous profile as your heart seemed to do a couple of somersaults.

"I hoped you're not at home," you mumbled, sitting up straight and wrapping yourself even tighter in the blanket, as if there was something underneath that his eyes hadn't seen and his thin long fingers hadn't touched.

"Why wouldn't I be at my own apartment?" he tilted his head to the side, gaze flickering from your big puppy eyes to your pink lips. You seemed different. Delicate. Fragile. Vulnerable. That feigned impregnability slowly dissolved right before his eyes, revealing the real you, with your cheeks slightly flushed, your lips puffy, a little swollen from the night before, and these sweet eyes of yours that glimmered not with lust as before, no, with unspeakable tenderness. He wouldn't have mistaken it for anything else, because he'd been looking at you that way for a long time, trying to put all those words that get lost without finding their way out into each kiss.

You shrugged and lowered your head, trying to avoid the intense stare that sent treacherous shivers down your spine. Kento smiled softly, sitting down beside you, gently tucking the strands behind your ear. Too intimate, you thought, yet on some instinctive level you leaned forward, letting yourself bask in his warmth. He slowly ran his thumb over your cheek, as if engraving your features in his memory. He could swear his heart got stuck in his throat when he saw the calm slowly spreading across your features, and the corners of your lips lifting into a small smile.

One second and you were pinned to the bed by his strong body. "What are you doing?" you squealed, pressing your hands against his bare chest, "let me go!" He didn't move, shamelessly examining your startled face. You seemed to grasp the great mysteries of the universe, things concealed from the eyes of others, hidden- somewhere in the depths, only for your eyes to see them now when he was smiling oh so boyishly. Kento let his serious facade crumble before you, no longer hiding how utterly enamoured by you he was. Another second and his lips began to leave little kisses all over your face and his arms wrapped around your smaller figure.

"What are you doooooing" you laughed, trying to dodge his kisses and feeling your cheeks growing hotter.

"Just kissing you, you look so adorable like this it's hard to resist, y'know," he smiled, watching you squirm, trying to escape his tight embrace. One more second and his hands were already under the blanket, gently stroking your ribs only to begin ticking your sides in an absolutely merciless manner the moment later.

"Kentooo", you yelped, bursting into unstoppable laughter, frantically trying to push him away from you. "You have to go to work," you tried to crawl back, away from his long arms, but he only cradled you a little tighter, throwing the blanket over the two of you, "i'm not going, actually i never gonna leave this bed".

ohhh…! that’s so many stars. and you’re subscribed to my ao3 profile….! how lovely! anon you’re wonderful. always nice to know I have a—if I dare be so bold—fan. now as that’s quite a lot of stars, so I… went overboard. consider it an expression of my affection for you, anon. going to put the rest of it under the cut:

about ff7: I’ve been playing ff7 veryyyy slowly for the past six months or so! it’s been exciting—I’ve managed to avoid a LOT of spoilers, and am still doing so, because I haven’t finished the game lol! but I had a reallly strong fic idea, centered around cloud & tifa, so I couldn’t resist. the dynamic between those two is so fascinating to me, because with the deaths of zack and aerith, I think they, as the ones “left behind,” have a really good opportunity to like… share in grief, and such. I wanted to write that fic in a way where any romance is kind of ambiguous, and secondary to the pure feeling of like, grief and love and living intertwined.

anyways. since you asked about sasamiya, I’m going to talk about various scattered sasamiya fics! I’ll gloss over the anomalous agate, because though I could talk about it for ages, I also wrote up a general commentary post. I’ll also skip over something there, since I just answered something in relation to that already. I’m really quite surprised (and flattered!) you said any of them, anon… there’s quite a few oddities in there.

I suppose I’ll start with a delinquent and a stargazer. that was a title I only ever came up with once porting a bunch of fics over ao3… and I was so embarrassed to find that backdated fics apparently show up as email notifications for subscribers. I’m sorry.

titling was so hard, but I’m pretty proud of this one, as in the fic it’s questionable who, between sasaki and hirano, the ��delinquent” and the “stargazer” are. the section I wanted to talk about, though, is this:

Hirano keeps laughing for a while longer, eyes scrunched in small joy, and then he flops down, flat on his back. His knuckle grazes against Sasaki’s arm before he pulls it back. “I think that’s the first time I’ve seen you smile.” “What?” “Just—” Hirano falls quiet. “I don’t know.”

so, when I was talking about something there, I briefly touched on the idea of sasaki being attentive when it comes to hirano, and that sense of Attention and Observation is something that’s really important to me in the sasahira dynamic. even when they’re not quite friends (first year), they’re deliberately conscious of each other in a way they’re not going to vocalize. so that’s what’s going on here, dialogue-wise—hirano makes a comment that’s indicative of him paying special attention towards sasaki, and specifically what makes him smile. in the description, sasaki’s remarkably attentive towards how hirano laughs, so he’s also cataloguing expressions of joy. they’re doing the same thing! also, sasaki focuses in on that graze of touch because it’s a very slight… crossing of boundary, here. like, you don’t usually casually touch people you’re not friends with. at the very least, sasaki is not going to do that (see: his issues with controlling his strength and stuff—I bet that spills over into being a bit over-conscious of touch)

next, let’s address this bit from help! my classmate’s asking for relationship advice, but I’m aromantic!?:

“Those are common descriptions, sure.” Hirano levels him with a flat look. “You sure lose all your worldly upperclassman charm when Miyano’s not around, huh?” Miyano was different. Miyano was the type of person to have stars in his eyes. Hirano was… also the type of person to have stars in his eyes, even if he went about it differently. It was, strangely enough, Hanzawa’s favorite thing about both of them. “It’s my secret,” Hanzawa says. Thankfully, Miyano hasn’t really asked him for advice of this kind yet.

my secret is that hanzawa’s “it’s my secret” is quoting. something that got stuck in my head. it's not famous or anything so I doubt anyone will recognize it. but it made me laugh, so I kept it in for the same reason I decided to use my wip title as the actual title… because it’s funny! also it killed the stress of having to title the thing.

I tend to headcanon hirano as some form of ace—it’s clear he responds to touch in a different way than kagiura, so it’s an angle i think is fun to explore—so having him connect with an aromantic hanzawa headcanon was neat, here. this bit shows hanzawa’s underlying pessimism regarding love & romance, as contrasted with hirano’s optimism, as he's looking to meet kagiura where he is. both asexuality & aromanticism, to me, have things to say about “unconventional love,” and this was an opportunity to explore that, in a way that tries to fit with canon. right now, hanzawa is feeling uncomfortable about the idea of dating, and romance—these feelings are going to have him blow up at his brother a little later. this conversation is also going to make him reformat his approach for miyano, later. on hirano’s end, he’s clearly trying to puzzle out his feelings, but both he & hanzawa are limited by conventional descriptors of what “love” has to look like. i think hanzawa envies hirano for his feelings, as much as he kind of disdains them—they’re not things that could every apply to him, after all. so that’s what motivates the fic, for me.

I know I write a lot of hanzashiro fic, so it might have been a surprise to see me write hanzawa as aromantic, but it’s like… man, no matter how I think of hanzashiro, it’s always in a way where hanzawa’s got some hang ups about the idea of romance in general. there’s a reason I’ve never written them actually dating—if that happens, it’s not going to be conventional, and I’m far more interested in exploring the tension of things being ambiguously romantic between the two. this is fun because i characterize hanzawa as romance avoidant as well as generally avoidant (see him self-describing himself as picking the path of inaction in this fic) and that interacts well with tashiro, who seems like a regular guy, but has never had a girlfriend, doesn’t seem to care about having one, and is sometimes curious about romance in a way that’s suggests he doesn’t quite “get” it. tashiro’s also got a surprisingly sharp intuition, while hanzawa is perceptive and knowing… hanzashiro, then, to me, is about the tension of seeing, of understanding.

speaking of hanzashiro. I’ve written quite a few fics centered around it, but I’ll settle with talking about the first thing I wrote, two-tone. how about… this long concluding passage:

“Some attention’s fine,” Hanzawa said carefully. “Fame is different. It’s like… being inspected, over and over. Like an object.”  The silence between them stretched a little too long. Hanzawa cleared his throat, planning to leave, but the sound that emerged from his throat wasn’t gentle but rough, long, and dry.  “Hey,” Tashiro said, before Hanzawa had the presence of mind to be embarrassed. “You look parched.” He held out his water bottle, fingers curled around the neck. It swung between them.   Hanzawa stared back at him. He’d been doing it a lot, nowadays, but right now he felt overwhelmed by it, just looking at everything and the hint of a smile on Tashiro’s face, the way the awkward, close feeling in his throat was loosening already, feeling like he was on the edge of many realizations that were all secretly the same one. There was a metaphor here, somewhere, to be pulled from the shape of Tashiro’s knuckles brushing up against his hand—something about hunger. A starving man who’s been drinking an ocean given his first sip of spring water. For now, Hanzawa was content to let that stray thought swirl along with the rest. Maybe years later he’d think about how to write it down. Tashiro grinned as Hanzawa accepted the bottle, took a long, slow gulp. “Feeling better?” he asked. Hanzawa stared up at his half-bleached hair and sunny smile. “Yeah,” he said, voice smooth. “Something like that.”

two-tone is a fairly obvious title—tashiro’s got two-tone hair, and hanzawa’s two-toned in that he’s multifaceted. originally this was meant to be a 2-chapter fic, w/ a tashiro pov sequel, and this… kinda but not fully exists in two-faced.

but—okay. let’s break down this scene. hanzawa is someone who’s really aware of what is “normal” and doesn’t really want to be “abnormal.” this is why he doesn’t want to be famous—he’s already wearing some kind of mask, and that level of constant inspection is going to turn him into someone who’s like… fully dissociated from himself. he’s going to think of himself like an object or a puppet to maneuver, rather than a person. so being inspected scares him, because he’s not good with honesty, and feels like what’s underneath isn’t like… evil, or bad, it’s embarrassing. hanzawa reveals some of his discomfort with this, and immediately wants to escape. but his throat is dry, so any smooth escape is broken up by this harsh, ugly sound—like the ugliness of himself is being shown, here.

next, tashiro offers water. there’s a couple reasons for this. the primary and obvious one is because hanzawa is parched. the second reason is that I was heavily inspired by what I’ll call @dirtbra1n’s river series, which uses the river as a really fascinating metaphor for a lot of hanzawa’s character. I think you can do a lot with the shifting nature of water—how it adapts to take the shape of its container, for example, and I wanted to pay some kind of homage to that, so that’s why we’re using water bottles. I then proceeded to lose my mind when i read that anthology bit where tashiro slides a drink over to hanzawa when he’s accepting the possibility of being captain.

okay, but back to the offering—tashiro’s fingers are curled around the neck. this evokes a sense of—albeit gentle—strangulation. so that pairs well with what hanzawa’s fearing at this moment—honesty, awkwardness, etc. he doesn’t want to be caught. but the bottle’s also swinging… a motion that puts it in limbo, and I imagine it’s got a sort of, hypnotic pendulum vibe. it’s alluring. hanzawa accepts.

accepting doesn’t bring any kind of awful thing. instead tashiro’s nice, easy, in the way that honesty is when you feel safe. hanzawa’s throat loosens even before he drinks any water, because tashiro’s presence is one that makes talking comfortable. hanzawa’s staring at him, and tashiro’s looking back—some attention’s fine. he’s on the edge of many realizations, things about how he’s allowing himself to be vulnerable and the like, but the reason for all that stems from a simple I like him.

then we get to talk about hunger. of course it comes when tashiro’s touching him, just barely. like sasaki and hirano, it’s a mild crossing of boundaries. a starving man drinking an ocean is not just having problems, he’s having “solutions” that are ill-fitted and actively damaging. starving tends to mean you need food, not water… and ocean water tends to make you dehydrated on account of the salt. then, a sip of spring water is a path towards a solution for thirst, but it’s not solving the starvation problem, yet. that’s why this is the barest of touches. it’s like spring—like the green tashiro wears, which, by the way, I said his favorite color was spring green before I knew he wore it a bunch—it’s like hope.

finally, tashiro asks hanzawa if he’s feeling better, and hanzawa responds truthfully. his voice is smooth—because of the water, and because tashiro makes it easier to be honest.

well, that was a lot! the last thing I thought I’d talk about is a dating sim au fic, because… it’s a pretty crazy concept and thus I thought I’d touch on it last. to give a quick summary, @dirtbra1n conceptualized an au where just shirahama & miyano exist in modern day japan, and then get isekai’d into the sasaki to miyano universe (only now it's a dating sim!), where miyano is the player character, and shirahama is Just Some Guy. a lot of the major sasaki to miyano characters have become romance routes, and that's going to bring around a lot of shenanigans where miyano runs from love and then runs towards it, and shirahama is losing his mind for a lot of reasons. the biggest of them being that shirahama’s got an unrequited crush on miyano, a thing that is semi-confirmed by volume 10 but was pretty left field at the time of this concept’s inception. what can i say. @dirtbra1n is some kinda genius. now, they have... a lot of very cool ideas that I'm not quite sure I can explain or conceptualize, but what’s interesting to me is the setup of shirahama as an npc in someone else's game.

I think this pairs interestingly with how unrequited love can kind of… make a person a side character. it’s usually there to introduce love rivals, to fuel plot, or to reach a requital. but I think there’s meaning and value in unrequited love that’s never reciprocated, too…? so there’s this bit in the stranger in the hall:

Ichinose turns his gaze to the floor. “Well,” he says, “since I’m graduating this year and I really doubt we’ll run into each other after that… like recognizes like, or whatever.” Nice, Shirahama thinks, the game never had any love interests that are third years when you’re a first year. Then he feels mortified. “And it’s a…” he trails off. “Um. Yeah,” Ichinose says, picking the dirt out of his fingernails. “It’s not really a—even if he wasn’t… it’s kind of a hopeless effort, you know? But I still…” A tightness abruptly seizes Shirahama’s throat. “Yeah,” he manages to get out. “I know.”

first off: meet ichinose ao. he’s a side character in hirano to kagiura that I’m obsessed with. if only I had the energy to post extensively about why I am. but we know he gets easily anxious to the point of stomach cramps, he’s a high-achieving student, and he’s got what looks to be a pretty hopeless crush on the dorm manager. I think this is fun—it’s pretty futile as far as mutual romance goes, but there’s valuable exploration in pining, in crushes, in learning the ways in which you love. he pairs pretty perfectly with shirahama.

I use the phrase like recognizes like because it’s a common one to signal two people’s similarities, but also because it’s literally liking—their unrequited crushes—that makes them similar. you see them mirror each other with how they talk about ichinose as a third year—he’s like, well I’m outta here so I can be a bit honest, and shirahama also relaxes because he’s going to be out of here and is therefore irrelevant to the miyano romance routes. and in this case, ichinose’s irrelevance means that he’s someone shirahama can talk to without fear.

and through their vague dialogue, this moment of connection allows shirahama, for the first time, to really vocalize the enormity of his secret love. and it allows me to try to express how even love, unrequited, has its own special place. that as it remains hopeless it remains valuable.

She's polite and neat. Because she's Pearl and has lived a life of strict Caste System rules on planet she lived, she knows how to conduct herself well (especially, before she moves to Earth). But after she moves to Earth and live with Ryota, she felt more relaxed than before.

She's quite innocent and harmless to anyone, which makes many gems and people (after she moves to earth) adore her. Especially Purple Star Sapphire, Ryota and his family. However before Era 3, her innocence makes her seem like a gullible, especially some gems who flirt with her. So, she didn't really know that that gems was flirting with her, and she wasn't interested in them to begin with. Which makes her owner, Purple Star Sapphire and her assistant, Heaven Beetle worry about her, at that times.

Although, she's naive. But, she's always curious about new things, so she's not afraid to approach anything that interests her and try new things. She Especially, after she moves to Earth and lives with her boyfriend, Ryota and his family. She has a good memory (better than her boyfriend, Ryota) and quick learner than most Gems would expect.

She's a responsible in her work well than some gems think. Although, she looks like an innocent gem in many gems' eyes who didn't know her yet. Before Era 3, she often recorded her work for Purple Star Sapphire and served her owner well as her servant and assistant as other Pearls. Only Purple Star Sapphire and her friends knew and understood her. After she live with Ryota, she's also very responsible in housework. She always ready to help her friends, Ryota and his family if them want

She's honest, especially to her owner, Purple Star Sapphire as her old owner, Green Agate. She always following always Purple Star Sapphire, even follow her moves to Earth with her owner. Before Era 3, although Purple Star Sapphire was very good to her. But deep down, she still missed Green Agate as her first owner.

She love and care Ryota much, because he's the one who make her a smarter and stronger by taught her to take care of herself, such as doing housework, cooking, shopping, help out at his Okonomiyaki restaurant and taught her how to spend money wisely and save the money to buy things she wanted or save for the future when she came to live in Japan.

She love to eat foods her boyfriend, Ryota and his mother cook, it made her want to learn how to cook, and try her best to impress Ryota and his family. On the contrary, she prefers to live a simple life like Ichiro's Apartment (after she move to Fukuoka). Being a down-to-earth, she likes to talk to other gems, or even human in a friendly manner.

The things she doesn't like is when some gems looks at her pearl, Mint Pearl with flirty eyes and . Because it's disrespectful to her. Plus she knows that her pearl is quite naive, she doesn't want anything bad to happen to her pearl. But fact, she just wants Mint Pearl to find someone who really loves and truly respects her, and she wants her pearl to choose someone she loves for herself (Before she moves to Earth and know Ryota).

Also, she don't like when some gems (especially high-ranking gems) insult Mint Pearl for her naivety. Because, she care Mint Pearl much as her true owner. In the past, She was careful and very protective to Mint Pearl (Kiyoko), especially when some gems come to flirt Mint Pearl. Sometimes, she feels stressed, tired and annoyed by other gems who flirt with Mint Pearl without any respect. She will protect Mint Pearl from other gems, as long as one of Purple Star Sapphire (Sumire) doesn't agree. Like Purple Star Sapphire, she want Mint Pearl to choose someone she loves for herself (Before she moves to Earth and know Ryota). But after she know and live with Ryota, She has become more relaxed about protecting Mint Pearl than before, She still wanted to help her and continue to take care of her as her friend.

She's close to Ryota. Because, he's her first human friend came to her life after she moved to Earth, she has learned many things about of Earth and Japan from him. She like his cheerfulness, and funniness, the way he makes Mint Pearl and herself smile and be happy with his positive energy. She could see why Mint Pearl love and interested in him, and Purple Star Sapphire had agreed to let him date her.

For brothers and cousin, she learn some skills such as writing and reading Japanese language from Simon, planting from Keisuke, and knowledge about fire prevention and first aid from Ichiro. Like Purple Star Sapphire, she supports the relationship between Ichiro and Milky Quartz. Because she saw that Ichiro is good person and more mature than Milky Quartz, although he seemed to be a loner.

She's interested in some bugs from Ryota, she think some bugs are cool in their own way, like Beetle (she think it's coolest bug) and Dragonfly (it's look funny and cool in the same time in her thought).

Princess Paz is a prodigy genius and scholar, widely beloved by all her kingdom. She was prophesied at birth to bring her country into a golden age at the dawning of her adulthood. The fairy territory is witnessing its first ever monarch rise to power. Queen Silicaris towers over even the tallest fairies. Her body looks and moves as if it's made of molten glass, but her most devout followers insist she is the purest crystal. Blue Lace Agate Reference

Redid it (old one link but I’ll include it below the cut). Here’s her toyhou.se link for her profile (link). She was made before the canon Agates were made in Steven Universe and I based Agates off of shonen/magical girl series (made full of references to different series). Blue Lace would be the eldest/one everyone looks up to trope. Definitely has the tragic past stuff. She used to be under Blue Diamond but she’s been a merc for like... 2000 years or so. Agates are assassin/elite soldier types. Also here’s a link to her initial drawing (from January 2016) where you can see that I was using not only the blur tool for shading, but that I went a degree darker (barely anything) for shading).

“all works” i have an insane amount of wips I could probably “feel” I could answer this about. will restrict myself to three main ones on account of choosing deliberate and practiced restraint. that’s still an Amount tho so under the cut as usual

15. in what ways are you challenging yourself with [project], and is there anything specific you want to come out of the work having improved skills in? on the other hand, which aspects are fully in your comfort zone?

projects, huh… let’s start with the sickfic I’m working on, because that’s the easiest. when I wrote the anomalous agate, that was a challenge in many ways: I hadn’t seriously written first person in years, and I was also trying to find a bridge between my style of writing, while also trying to emulate the general feeling of how the case files of jeweler richard is narrated. these days, I feel pretty satisfied with whatever kind of middle ground I achieved… I only regret that seigi doesn’t call richard some version of beautiful with nearly enough frequency as he does in canon.

this time around, the first person of it all is pretty comfortable for me, and I feel like I’m more comfortable with the fact that my narration doesn’t sound exactly like the novels. what I’m challenging myself with is… I’m pretty good at bashing out a solitary scene, but my completion rate for fics, and writing in general, is like… distressing. You don’t realize how untrained you are in terms of actually chaining together events and concluding things, until you realize that you’ve finished your first multichaptered fic in 2024. to be clear, I would say I’ve been writing seriously as a hobby for a bit over 10 years at this point. I also have not really written a sickfic before. so, even though this fic is shorter than the other two projects, it’s still a bit of a challenge for me to string together a chain of events that will lead into a satisfying conclusion. I also find that sickness is a thing that’s hard to describe in a way that doesn’t get stale.

nonetheless, I’m comfortable with a lot of this—I feel like I get both seigi and richard well enough to execute this, I actually did outline a chain of events, so I know where it starts and where it ends. I know the kind of themes I’m working with, and what I want to say within this fic. and I think I’m pretty damn good at creating an aura of tenderness and intimacy, which feels like a big sickfic thing. worst comes to worst, the first scene can stand on it’s own, so I’ll just post that if I really can’t write the rest.

outcome-wise, I'd like to just get this fic to a state where I can publish it and reread it happily. then I can finally read the next volume of the case files of jeweler richard lol

for cross-examination, my challenge is finishing the damn thing. that’ll be a theme for literally everything. I’m so bad at it, it’s catastrophic. I have an outline for the third chapter. I’ve had that outline for a year. I just can’t write it, somehow. it’s also written in present tense… I used to write in past tense, and then did present tense for a long time, and then I switched back into past tense, and this now means that I can have trouble sticking to a specific tense sometimes. so an issue is whenever I return to this fic, I have to try to get myself back into the swing of writing present tense.

other challenges… I kind of feel like I wrote this fic without really investigating the characters? like, I know them well enough, and I don’t think anything is necessarily wrong about my characterization, but I wasn’t building in-depth profiles about them in the way that I do with some characters now. really the toughest part of this fic is returning to something I feel like should have been completed a long time ago… I still have affection towards the concept, and the fact that there’s a full 3k written of the final chapter means I am dedicated to finishing it.

this comes up with the last fic, too, but this fic also has me have to outline progression in a relationship, from like… apollo and klavier at the end of aa4, into a place where they can actually be dating, and that took a bit of planning at first. it’s hard to find the line of how to pace things in a way where the growth feels real, and it feels like they get together naturally. there’s kind of two definitions of slow burn to me: one where they want each other desperately and the fic is just kind of edging that tension until it breaks, and one where it’s a gradual development and build up of feelings. I’m good with the first one, where there’s already a level of importance each person affords the other, and just no confession, but the latter is a bit harder. this fic acts as a kind of bridge between both, to me—apollo and klavier find each other quite meaningful, even at the start, but they aren’t really friends, and that’s what has to change.

as for what’s in my comfort zone… it’s a very peaceful and kind of gentle tone that the whole fic takes. I’ve been told I’m quite good at maintaining that kind of feeling, where it’s not like it’s saccharinely sweet, but nothing is particularly full of melodrama.

outcome-wise, I want to have it published and done so it doesn't haunt me. there's wips i feel more comfortable leaving behind (i'm just not that person anymore, it feels too flawed to fix) but this is not one of them. and I get out of it another longfic completed, which hopefully trains my skills of like... progression and development.

now, for my jiang cheng fic project (wip title is just aromanticism bc it makes me smile), which I talk about and have complained about for forever… I’ve been working on this fic for so long it’s like… what am I not doing with this fic? seriously, this idea originated in 2021, and like… I work on it on and off, sure, so it’s not like continuous work, but at the very least it’s occupied a good deal of my mind for the last year. I’ve had to rewrite so damn much of it, too…

like cross-examination, this fic tests my ability to write and complete longfic—that meaning, can I string together coherent themes across a large number of scenes? can relationships develop and progress naturally? it centers on jiang cheng and hua cheng, and I’ve tasked myself with taking two strangers into the realm of deep, important friendship. and I want to do all of that while addressing a lot of different resentments that I think jiang cheng feels, and addressing the idea of resentment in general… the value I see in it, and the things I feel that aren’t so great.

It’s very tough because I also haven’t written a fic for the mdzs fandom, well… ever, and I read it the one time like, back in early 2019, and I’ve seen maybe 10 episodes of the show. I think a lot of times, I get too in my head about how my fic interacts with or differs from common sentiments about the characters I’m writing, which is why I don’t read fic for this fandom or interact with that much content nowadays. It’s a really tough fic because I want to do a lot with it, and despite the fact that I’ve had to rewrite a bunch of scenes and scrap some of them entirely (like, at least a good 10k of it’s been deleted… I couldn’t give an exact count as I don’t save that stuff), I can feel myself improving.

The narration for this fic is markedly different—there’s a certain amount of formality/poise I try to imbue the writing with. and I’m trying to see if I can associate certain vibes/descriptors with specific characters, though I haven’t quite worked on that yet. I also push myself into leaving things to be more ambiguous… to let characters be awkward and uncomfortable, and in this case, to write outright conflict. I rarely do this—my fics usually work on tension, but don’t escalate into actual fights. this does. there’s also a lot of worldbuilding involved… I’ve made 4 OCs just for this fic, and not all of them are that important, but there’s just… so much backstory and stuff that I’ve developed and don’t know if it will actually make it into the fic. But it makes everything feel richer, and I’m glad for it.

so, if i had to sum up my challenges, it's probably that it takes quite a bit of detailing and hard work, and I'm not used to sticking through a project so demanding. I think because the fic requires so much, it's also something that needs me to be fully and totally confident in what I'm presenting, and that's something I'm struggling with.

as for what is in my comfort zone, I suppose that even though the description style I’m going with is new, it’s not too demanding, and I always feel comfortable when I write hua cheng. Unlike jiang cheng, who I constantly am debating with myself about (is he canon-accurate? am I projecting too hard? am I representing him as too much of a good guy? does that matter?), hua cheng is a character where I’m like, “nah, I like my interpretation of him fine,” and I just have such a blast writing his dialogue.

outcome-wise, when this fic is published, I want to be proud of the work i did on, again, the progression and development of the themes and character relationships, and I also want to publish it with the intent of kind of never writing an mdzs fic again. I'll get out most, if not all of my feelings about this guy, and then i can just have that to point to.

Biteki Gomibako, also known as 'Gomi', is your average student attending Akedemi highschool.
