This was me when I did a year of Commerce at university and categorically realised I saw no future for myself in this field and pivoted hard into teaching, which had been my initial career goal back when I was 14 or 15. A career multiple people had cautioned against because it wasn’t “ambitious enough” and as one of those kids initially perceived as “academically advanced” I should aim higher.

I had gone into uni with the intention of doing comm law, didn’t make the grade for law but thought I’d do comm and transfer into law with good enough grades. Ended up failing the accounting unit and just lost all motivation. The law side had been what I was really interested in (tho on reflection 8 years after graduating high school it was more a special interest than a career path) and so I really couldn’t find myself continuing on with this course, cut my losses and jumped into an entirely different pathway.

Even after a year of the teaching course, while it had a more clear end goal, it didn’t take until my second year of teaching and my first real practical teaching experience that required me to plan and deliver lessons, did I absolutely fall in love.

Now I watch my sister, who is younger than me by 10 years, stressing out about the next two years (her final two years of high school) and all I keep reiterating to her is “you can always change your mind later. It’s not the end of the world”.

While my parents never had any particular careers they wanted me to pursue, they value stability over all else and so were rightly concerned when I did transfer courses. My dad said something along the lines of “you have this one last chance and after that if it doesn’t work out you get a job”. My mum will, even after being satisfied with my current stability and success as a teacher, still cite that first year of uni as a waste of time and money.

But I always say in response “it showed me what I didn’t want. It introduced me to the uni experience and I got to meet people I would otherwise never have met. I gained knowledge that while I may not ever actively use still enriched my overall knowledge base. It wasn’t a waste of time. It helped me figure out where I was going”

Now this thought can apply to things as big as careers and as small as hobbies.

You can always change your mind later. Yes it may have cost you time and money. But it will cost you energy and mental well-being to pursue something you ultimately have grown to dislike. Two things that are infinitely more fragile and difficult to recover once lost.

That’s not to say we should abandon things that take work and effort. Teaching is a difficult job. While my family are resting after school, I’m still planning for the next day. I’m in constant vigilance at school bc I’m responsible for the health, safety, wellbeing and education of 20 tiny humans. But I take pride and satisfaction when I see a student make a breakthrough or deliver a lesson really well. If you’re not even finding satisfaction in the results of your labour or inspiration or desire to do The Thing of your own volition then it is no longer worth your effort.

So I see my sister who is constantly seeking advice about her career path and stressed about making sure it goes perfectly and know there are kids out there in the exact same position. Even adults who are looking for a change or doing something they don’t like.

You can change your mind. The world isn’t going to end and you are allowed to leave things behind that don’t make you happy.

This a a reminder to not fall victim to the sunk-cost fallacy. Just because you invested time and energy into something, does not mean you should indefinitely waste more time and energy on it, if you decide it’s not what you want anymore. This goes for anything, from books, to relationships, to jobs, to hobbies, etc.

If it’s not serving you anymore, move on.
