Hi, I want to talk to you abou this image:
This illustration is titled "black slave women of different african nations". I find the combination of traditional African elements such as face-paint, necklaces and what appears to be ritual scarification and Western fashion worn by these women incredibly striking, but what made my jaw drop is the idea that these women are slaves.
While I am aware that maids and other lower-class women were sometimes able to access fancy clothing hand-me-downs from their employers, I had expected the nature of slavery in the Americas to make it impossible for enslaved black women to do the same.
So, this is a drawing. Whether it's drawn from life or not, I don't know, but the artist could easily have staged these women in fashionable (early 19th century) dresses or made the outfits up from their imagination. That being said, enslaved women absolutely did attempt to have "best" clothing and follow the fashions when they became aware of them.
Humans are human, no matter the circumstances. You can't crush that drive for beauty out of people, however you oppress them.
I know a bit more about fashion and later generations of Black women enslaved in the southeastern US, after scarification and such had been stripped out of their culture, but that certainly bears out this idea of treasuring beauty and trying to make space for fine clothing in their lives. Church services, weddings, and holidays like Christmas were often occasions for enslaved women to wear the best outfits they had, along with any jewelry or other finery they had managed to make or inherit. Some enslavers did give "favorite" people they held in bondage cloth, castoff clothes, cheap jewelry, lace, etc. At other times, the enslaved people cleverly made things themselves- one WPA Former Slave Interview in the 1930s, which I cannot find again for the life of me, featured an elderly man recalling that he once made hoop skirts from dried grapevine with an enterprising friend, selling them to the women in his community for a nickel (many enslaved people earned small amounts of money taking side jobs outside of their punishing work schedule).
Obviously such clothes could not be worn while working, but like I said, there WERE occasions of joy and celebration even in the harshness of slavery. The tradition of Black women wearing elaborate hats to church may in part originate from enslaved women (and their free but economically disempowered sisters) taking advantage of a rare chance for self-expression and elegance.
(Of course there were also less positive instances in which an enslaved woman might have fine clothing, namely sex trafficking, or habitual rape by an enslaver who then attempted to compensate her for this heinous crime with presents. New Orleans' infamous "fancy girl" market is enough to turn your stomach if you look it up.)
After the Civil War, some white commentators were incensed to see Black women in fashionable attire walking the streets where they'd once been enslaved. For these women, it acted as a visible and tangible way of asserting their freedom- as their ancestors despite wringing what happiness they could from life -had been unable to.
If anyone has more to add on this, please chime in! Enslaved women's fashion specifically is not my area of research, so I welcome input from people who study this more extensively. Cheyney McKnight is a wonderful source on enslaved people's lives in general, and a historical costumer herself.

sunday mornings - [husband!miguel x blackwife!reader]
synopsis: just a domesticated miguel's sunday routine with his gorgeous black wife.
contents: sfw, suggestive theme, brief sex part but it is not graphically written, just fluffy stuff
notes: some use of spanish is used in this. my spanish is not very good, so if there is any grammatical errors please let me know. i wrote this bc i saw a lot of miguel x black reader fics that have smut in them, and rarely did i see some domestic or fluff with miguel and a black reader. miguel is not spiderman in this, he does not have any mutated abilities or powers. miguel is in his early 30s and reader is in their late 20s.
The weekends are always an anticipated time for Miguel. During the weekdays he would be working diligently in the confines of a cold laboratory. He worked the typical 8 to 5 as a bioengineer, pulling in money to support him and his lovely wife. On Saturdays, Miguel would spend them freely doing whatever errands or activities he couldn't do over the weekday. However on Sundays, there was a routine that him and his wife set in stone for them.
It starts off with Miguel waking up to the aromatic sweet smell of pancakes and a California king-sized bed with an empty spot beside him. The curtains and blinds in their bedroom are closed, yet the tell-tell signs of sunlight is evident from the peeks of rays. His sleepy brown eyes look at the wall clock and reads the time as five past 8 in the morning. Which was normal for his wife to be cooking their breakfast at a time like this on Sunday.
The man lifts himself out of bed, and doesn't leave the bedroom till after he's fixed up the bedsheets and laid the pillows back into place in a neat order. As he crosses the threshold of the door he shuts off the ceiling fan with a flick of his fingers flipping the switch down. Miguel runs his thick long fingers through his dark brown bed head hair as he walked through the hallway. The walls were decorated with family pictures, their wedding ceremony, and paintings of abstract African art.
As he got closer to the kitchen, he could hear the faint sound of the R&B song "Weak" by SWV playing from the bluetooth speaker. Accompanied by that was the sizzling of bacon cooking on the stove and the smell of that lingering in the air. Miguel came upon the kitchen entryway and he stood there leaning against the frame just to observe you preparing breakfast.
You were standing at the flat ceramic-top stove, flipping pancakes on a pan while keeping a watchful eye on your bacon. Your husband eyes your attire: a cream satin robe that ended above your knees and a matching color bonnet on your head. Your face free of any makeup, and you were just in your natural state. You looked beautiful as the day he first met you.
Miguel leans off of the frame and makes his way over to you. While you were in the midst of cooking, you felt strong arms and a firm chest press against your back. Large hands wrapped around your stomach, intertwining their fingers in a way to prevent from you escaping. As if you would ever do that. His supple lips attached themselves to the junction of your neck and collarbone just as a content sigh emit from him. A gentle and heart-warming kiss is what left goosebumps on your brown skin. A genuine, happy smile followed.
"Hmm... buenos días mi corazón." He whispers to you, and rests his chin on your shoulder to watch you cook. "Qué tenemos para breakfast?"
You daintily flip over a pancake while responding to him, "You are having oatmeal with apples, cinnamon, and honey. I am going to have pancakes, bacon and scrambled eggs."
Miguel pouts at the meal he was going to be eating, "Do I have to eat that mi corazón? It's so bland."
"Hey, the doctor said your cholesterol levels were high Miguel and that you need to cut back on sodium. You wanna have a heart attack or do you wanna live to see 60?"
He rolled his eyes, but he couldn't argue with your factual rebuttal. "Okay, I get it." His lips kiss your cheek before he lets you go and takes a seat at the dining table. Your gentle voice calls from the kitchen, "I love you Miguel."
"Te quiero tambien, Y/N."
Once you were finished cooking breakfast for you and your husband you set out the plates. First you placed your plate of scrambled eggs, two pancakes, and three strips of bacon onto the tablemat. Then you served Miguel with his bowl of oatmeal coupled with four boiled eggs and his orange juice. You let out an amused chuckle when you saw the pout on his lips upon seeing his meal. Your lips kiss his temple before you go over to sit at your designated seat.
"It's only for a month, papi, don't worry too much."
Together you both ate breakfast and discussed over plans for your Sunday. You told Miguel that after church services you were to be a teacher's substitute for the children so you wouldn't make it home until a little after 12. Miguel said he was fine with that since he would be helping out one of your elderly neighbors with mowing his lawn today due to the guy's back being hurt. You also mentioned to him that you needed to do chores around the house. He reminded you that you were to have Sunday dinner with his parents tonight at their place.
"As long as you're not going to be drunk with your dad then we can do that." You say to him.
"I won't drink with my father, cariño." He promises.
After breakfast was over the two of you started to get dressed for church. You did your makeup in your shared bathroom, going for a soft glam look. You took off your bonnet and fixed up the Senegalese twists you had in your head. You laid down your baby hairs, massaged oil onto your scalp and conditioned your hair. When you were finished doing that you went on to get dressed. Out from your private closet you pulled out a long sleeve mustard yellow maxi dress and slid on sandals. Then you accessorized with gold bracelet, gold heart necklace and gold diamond tear-drop earrings.
You came out of your bedroom and walked into the foyer where Miguel was standing there waiting for you. He was wearing the dark brown two piece suit you had picked out from him the night before. A mustard yellow tie and handkerchief stood out. Your husband cleaned up nice.
His eyes met yours when he heard you walking down the hall and smiled lovingly at you. "Dios mío... Te ves hermosa en ese vestido mami." He gently grabbed a hold of your hand and spun you around just to get a glimpse of your butt. "I don't think I wanna go to church today now."
You giggle and swat him in the chest playfully. "Damn Miguel, you horny dog, we're not skipping out on church again for that. Maybe when we get home this afternoon..." You trailed off letting him know that you were insinuating it could happen.
After Miguel gave you another twirl then a slap on the ass you two set off for church. There the two of you sat in the middle section of the chapel. Some folks came up to you greeting you both, and conversated about what the preacher was going to say today. You both got many compliments on your matching outfits. Which to you wasn't a surprise as you both wore matching outfits on Sunday mornings with similar colors. You remember from last year how the two of you wore red, white and green colors in celebration of Christmas during a service.
The service held felt long despite it lasting an hour and a few minutes over time. You and Miguel did your donations to the church. You both separately put in $50 into the hat that went around the congregation. You sang the songs that the choir was singing and praised every time the preacher talked about the Lord. By the time it was time to leave you looked at Miguel and told him to not pick you up since you had a ride back home after the class with the Sunday school children. You gave him a kiss good-bye then went on about your day teaching.
Miguel went home and changed out from his church clothes to a loose grey tank top, khaki cargo shorts and sneakers. He went over to the neighbor's home and let them know that he was going to mow their lawn for them before doing it. The old man neighbor was thankful for Miguel, even offered him money, but your husband politely refused. To him kind acts of service shouldn't be paid for with money but with kindness in return.
At around 12 you were just arriving home from church and Miguel had just finished up with mowing the neighbor's grass. He greeted you at the door kissing your lips tenderly and his hands caressing your hips. You inwardly laughed as you weren't even a minute into being home when your husband started kissing you and feeling you up in the foyer.
"Papi, I haven't been home for five minutes!" You squealed when he carried you up off the ground and pressed your back against the wall.
Your husband smirks on your lips and replies, "You're the one who said we could do it after church."
He was right you did say that to him this morning. You threaded your manicured fingers through his hair, a soft moan slipping past your glossed lips and into his own.
"Hmm, Miguel, if you really want it we gotta go to the room." You say breathlessly in between the passionate kisses he was giving you.
Miguel carries you into the bedroom and lays you on the bed gracefully. Once you two have rid each other of one another's clothes and jewelry pieces you both engage in steamy coitus. Hands caressing bodies, lips sucking on flesh, and sweat sticking to skin. A song of low grunts, shrill pleased moans, and heavy rushed pants resonated in the bedroom. The loud pounding of skin sounded like a drum in the background and creaking of the bed frame. It all escalated into an unsteady rhythm then came to an abrupt halt once you both met your ending.
The two of you laid in the rumpled bedsheets just holding each other in the aftermath. Basking in one another's glow. You tilt your head up to look at your husband and then kiss the underside of his sharp jawbone.
"We can't stay in bed too long, papi. I still got chores to do and we have dinner with your family tonight."
Miguel let out a tired sigh, "Just five more minutes cariño."
You move to get out of the bed, "Uh-uh, Miguel we gotta get moving, come on now." You pull yourself out of the bed and turn to your naked husband still laying on the bed. You wave your hand, "Come on, get the bed sheets changed and let's take a shower."
"I love you."
You pause when he says those words, but your face softens when you feel butterflies in your stomach. The words, "I love you too." fall out of your mouth when you respond. After saying that you walk out of the bedroom and into the bathroom, Miguel could hear your voice shouting, "You better be getting out of that bed and changing them sheets!"
Miguel shakes his head followed by a roll of his eyes. Though he does as he is told. He changes the messed up bedsheets, putting the old one into the laundry room and then replacing it with clean fresh ones. As soon as he was done he met with you in the shower and you both washed together.
Yes this was Miguel's Sunday routine. Going to church with his gorgeous wife, helping out with the chores, and attending Sunday family dinners with her family or his family once a week. It was the one day of the 7-day week that Miguel looked forward to. And he wouldn't trade it for anything else in the world.

I'm struggling with nabu's outfits man. I'm really trying to give him something that fits him. I made him like a scholar with a yearning for adventure, sort of Indiana Jones inspired I guess. And I really want South Asian and African men's ware fashion influences in his looks, but all I get when I look for reference on Pinterest is wedding attire? it's hard to find stuff the average person would wear casually, bc even though Nabu is a nobleman I think he would still like to be comfy and maybe even appear humble lol.
I think the thing that's really getting me is trying to harmonize these two outfits:
They are so vastly different in aesthetic and personality that they feel totally detached from one another to me. I know the one on the right is his earth outfit but still, the only thru line is purple 😭

With the latest update of the Thicker Than demo by @barbwritesstuff I decided its time to post a collage and some info about my Blackwell.
Name: Dr. Roxane Godwin Blackwell
Occupation: Doctor, single mom and unwilling vampire noble.
Pronouns: She/Her
Height:5ft.5”/165.1cms
Birthdate: June 19, 1981
Appearance: An African American woman of average height and build, with a heart shaped face, dark brown complexion, brown eyes, black braided hair, a full mouth, and defined cheekbones. Usually seen wearing modern fashionable clothes with silver jewelry, or medical scrubs.
Family: Chris( husband, deceased),Percy(son, alive)
FC: Lupita Nyong’o
LI: Too many appealing ROs will play multiple saves for Marcel, Illya, Freya, and Nathan.
Misc. Info & headcanons:
Her name Roxane means dawn or light in persian. Her original surname Godwin means friend of God, and is a reference to Mary Shelly, as it was one of the author’s maiden names.
Her son's name, Percy means to pierce or destroy, and is in reference to Mary Shelly’s only surviving son.
Her initials RGBW are the same as a type of lighting combos used for electronics.
Roxane prefers to be addressed by Doctor rather than Lady, because she actually worked hard for her medical degree.
Due to working in the medical field Roxane already developed a morbid sense of humor to help her cope. This hasn’t changed much since becoming a vampire except the jokes have become darker.
Roxane knows how to play the ukulele. It was a hobby she picked up as a child, and she even used to play lullabies for Percy when he was a baby. She doesn’t play it much anymore since becoming a vampire.
Roxane’s symbol after becoming the new Lady Blackwell is a stylised plague doctor mask on top of a medical caduceus. So she winds up both bird and snake imagery when associating with house Blackwell.
Roxane’s favorite flowers are poppies because of their medical uses and they’re pretty easy to grow. Although she does appreciate the irony that poppy flowers are also associated with remembrance.
While she died in her late 30s Roxane was blessed with good skin, so even though she was overworked and tired when Lawrence turned her she still looked younger, and now she always will.
While Roxane has to practice and relearn how to emote, smiling seems to be easier due to muscle memory from her time as Lawerence’s thrall. Sadly it’s much different from the way she used to smile when she was alive, because Roxane used to have a beautiful smile that would light up a room.
Still married to Chris but he died from a car accident before the events of Blood Moon, and Thicker Than. Roxane kept both of their silver wedding rings on a chain around her neck, but Lawerence Blackwell took and melted them when he made Roxane a vampire.
Roxane’s attempt at friendship with Minjo is more tragic in retrospect, since Roxane knows intimately the kind of pain and grief of losing the husband and father of her child, but if she ever fully remembered the previous Lord Blackwall forcing her to hurt Minjo and her family. The guilt would devastate Roxane as well as make her wish she could have murdered her predecessor herself.
After becoming a vampire Roxane started wearing exclusively red or black for her more formal attire. That way the bloodstains don’t ruin her more expensive clothes.
When Percy was still a baby Roxane gave him a small stuffed rabbit and it became his favorite comfort toy. As he got older he decided to give the rabbit to Roxane, because he’s a big boy now, and he knows how much his mom misses being with him. He figures the rabbit will help Roxane not feel so sad and lonely because Percy loved it so much but he wants his mom to know he loves her more. Roxane always kept the little stuffed rabbit in her pocket or purse, like a lucky charm. Even when she was imprisoned for five years, focusing on the toy and memories of her son helped keep Roxane from completely losing herself.
Roxane’s relationship with her son, Percy, in an odd way mirrors the dynamic of Perseus and both his mother, Danaë, and Medusa (also Roxane would have definitely read the Percy Jackson books with her son). Like the Greek hero Percy is a protective boy who is raised by a single mother, and then separated from each other when Roxane is made a member of the Night Court against her will, although not by an unwanted marriage but by being made a fledgling vampire. Tragically Roxane could also potentially be like the gorgon, after breaking out of her 5 year imprisonment, she tries to visit her son, but ultimately leaves without letting Percy see her face. It would break Roxane's cold dead heart to be the cause of her son's demise, or have her baby boy look at her like a monster. As a vampire Roxane prefers to live in seclusion from the court, and while she doesn’t have the power to turn others to stone like Medusa. A vampire's predatory gaze can cause people to freeze and if trained enough in Path of the Master she can potentially command someone to be still as a statue. There are also some versions of Medusa’s origin where she was a priestess who was assaulted in her temple by a god, and cursed to become a monster. Likewise Roxane’s murder by Lawernence Blackwell in the hospital parking lot reads chillingly similar to many stories and police reports about victims of SA.

Chapter 2: Krampus
“We have many preparations to do and very little time,” Rosa Yaxley said, flipping a white board showing several sketches from flower bouquets to table settings, and photographs of what Dawn assumed, were traditional Alderlian wedding attire.
“Uh…” Dawn started but was silenced by a stern look from Pince.
“The Bavarian orchestra will start precisely at your entrance with the release of the Barbary doves.” Rosa explained, producing a pointer stick from somewhere and demonstrating all the items she mentioned. “South African wildflowers will adorn your path down the aisle.”
“Oh…” Dawn uttered. When the queen had said that Dawn would have a say, he hadn’t realized she had meant that she and Miss Yaxley had already planned everything and that he would just have to sit here and nod dutifully.
Rosa continued: “I mean, you won't, and I mean it, you won't be able to take a step without a Namaqualand daisy between the floor and your shoes.”
Dawn was beginning to really see that she didn’t particularly want to be in this position. He wondered if the queen had made her, as a punishment for her transgressions last year.
“Hmm…” he simply said.
“There will be a roast pig from each of Alderly's seven provinces. Montrachet Grand Cru will be in every goblet,” Rosa went on. “But of greatest importance... Is your outfit.”
“Is that what those are for?” Dawn asked, vaguely motioning towards the pictures of clothes. The designs looked like somewhere between a mix of Bavarian and Slovenian folk clothing with something distinctly… Christmassy about them.
“Is it customary to wear traditional dress to weddings?”
“Not for at least a hundred years but the queen felt that it was important to show how committed to our culture and traditions you are.”
“The queen… look,” Dawn started, and went on despite Pince’s warning glances. “I am committed. I’ve never been this committed to a goddamn thing in my entire life, but I feel like this might not go over well with the… well you know, the public.”
“Whyever not?” Pince chimed in.
“Well, I am a foreigner and maybe they will want to see me actually participate in their culture before taking on its symbols?” Dawn posited it as a question, but it really wasn’t. “Especially when this is just a publicity stunt, and I didn’t even pick the outfit.”
Rosa bit her lip but Pince went on: “Nonsense, of course you will wear the traditional costume.”
“I was really hoping that I could wear something… simple, something that’s a little more me.”
“What?” asked Pince.
“I mean these outfits are beautiful,” Dawn continued. “But I don’t want to play a part for my own wedding. Maybe I could wear one of these a year from now to an event where they’re actually worn in still?”
“I don’t think you understand the sort of situation we’re in,” Pince said. “Half the country is in an uproar because we haven’t seen this kind of financial hardships since the war, not to mention their monarch is pretty much going against every strong held value they’ve been instilled with since birth.”
“I sympathize with the depression, not so much with the homophobia,” said Dawn and noticed Rosa just barely concealing a chuckle. Maybe Dawn stood a chance after all.
~
“This protocol is driving me crazy. It's like Bridezilla in reverse,” Dawn complained later in a video call to Rocky and Pandora.
“Forgive me if I don't ooze sympathy from the night security desk of Noodle Chalet's corporate office,” said Rocky. Ever since the downfall of Beat Now, Rocky had been a security guard at Noodle Chalet, and it wasn’t lost on Dawn how his problems might probably seem somewhat quaint.
“Hey, at least you've got a job,” Pandora chimed in. “I've been living with my parents for the last three months.”
“Well, that’s tragic,” said Rocky.
“Yeah, ever since Now Beat shut down.”
“Now Beat?” asked Dawn. “It was Beat Now.”
Dawn was happy he was no longer working for Kerry Crouch, but he couldn’t help but miss having a normal job and normal problems. Especially with Irma Pince breathing down his neck at every turn.
“Whatever,” said Pandora with a shrug. “It’s gone now.”
“But Dawn, you’re having some royal pains?” asked Rocky.
Dawn chuckled. It was a pain just to be one, it seemed. “Well yeah, but I mean…”
“Have you talked to Quincey about any of this?” Pandora cut in.
“I haven’t seen him today.”
“They know how to keep a king busy,” Rocky said.
Dawn knew things were going to be busy, but he truly felt alone in the castle. He wasn’t even allowed to spend time with Tess and his dad, or at least not as much as he would have preferred. He was a little bit worried that this was how the rest of his life was going to look. Just protocol and event after event with only small respites in-between to actually hang out with his husband-to-be. He’d next be seeing Quincey when they all headed to town for his speech, and he didn’t expect there to be a lot of time for chit-chat.
“Just hurry up and get here already,” he said.
“Counting down the seconds, mate,” Pandora said.
~
Rosa had left Dawn with a folder full of designs for the wedding. Dawn flipped through it, examining the plans with growing dread. This whole ordeal didn’t feel at all like a wedding he would want for himself. Not that he had ever thought about getting married before this past year. He almost wished he and Quincey had just eloped. He’d rather have Elvis marry them in Vegas than whatever this was shaping up to be. Dawn slammed the folder shut and let it fall on the bed. He was going to have to complain to someone who would understand, or he’d end up committing arson. Or worse.
~
When Dawn went looking for Olympia later, he found her in the middle of an argument with her mother, the queen.
“You must understand that his whole thing is frivolous,” Isabella was saying.
“Well mother, it’s important to me so I don’t particularly care.”
“This is about the image we portray to the world,” Isabella tried. “A princess can’t be an actress.”
“I was in many plays as a child.”
“That was different.”
“This is for a good cause.”
“It doesn’t matter. You know what kind of situation we’re in with your past actions and your brother’s life choices.”
“It’s not a life choice.”
Isabella sighed. “You know what I meant.”
“No, I don’t, and I’m also doing the play, I don’t care what you think.”
“Don’t you speak to me with that tone, young lady.”
Dawn, suddenly realizing he was quite rudely eavesdropping, stepped into the room, fully pretending as if he hadn’t been listening. “Oh, hello Your Majesty, Your Highness.”
“Dawn, great timing, mother was just about to wring my neck,” said Olympia.
“Olympia–,” the queen attempted.
“I have to talk to you Dawn, if you don’t mind,” Olympia said and walked up to Dawn, grabbing his arm. “Preferably somewhere away from her…”
“Alright…” said Dawn, casting an apologetic glance at Queen Isabella. They had their differences, but Dawn was determined to get along with his mother-in-law.
~
Olympia led him to a smaller room, let go of his arm and dramatically fell into one of the priceless antique armchairs.
“What was that about?” Dawn asked.
“She thinks it’s common to do the play.”
“Oh, of course she does.”
“But I’m still going to do it,” Olympia continued. “I can’t wait for you to see it, it’s kind of like an arthouse reimagining.”
“Oh, wow, alright,” said Dawn.
“You could come see the dress rehearsal?”
“If I can get away from my own dress rehearsals…”
“Right, how’s that going, anyway?” Olympia asked and sat up straight. She had messed up her hair, slumping onto the chair.
“Well… It’s going.”
“You let me know if you need any help.”
Dawn knew he needed all the help he could get, but after hearing the conversation between Olympia and the queen, he wasn’t sure it was the best idea to rope Olympia into it.
“I’ll keep that in mind, thank you, O.”
~
That afternoon, the royal retinue made its way to town. Quincey’s speech took place in front of Alderly’s House of Parliament and the square in front of it was packed. Aside from the adoring crowd, though, there was a smaller but no less attention-grabbing group of protesters behind them. Dawn, ever the journalist, kept an eye on them. They were holding signs proclaiming the bad financial situation in the country and demanding to be paid or get their jobs back. Miss Pince, standing next to Dawn, was glaring at the crowd with hostility, when Quincey took to the podium. While many cheered, waving Alderlian flags, the protesters booed. Dawn shifted his weight from one foot to another uncomfortably.
“Behind me stands an enduring symbol of Alderly's historical strength. Before me, and all of us, lies our current revitalization project, a symbol of Alderly's shining future,” Quincey started. From Pince’s sudden shift in posture, Dawn deduced that the speech was written by her.
“For crops to flourish, rain must fall. Likewise, today's temporary hardships will soon spur on a bountiful future for all.”
Amongst the cheers, Dawn heard someone shout out: “What about our jobs?”
“The country's going broke!”
“Shame on the king!”
Security had to step in to rein in the protesters. Quincey couldn’t have missed the incident, but he continued like he had, as Dawn was sure he had been instructed to do.
“A new Alderlian chapter is about to begin. And I'm honoured and excited to share that journey with each and every one of you. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.”
~
After Quincey got off the stage, Lainey offered him a bottle of water.
“Thank you.”
“That went… alright,” she said. At least she was honest.
“I feel like a total fraud reading out that propaganda,” Quincey said with a sigh.
“Your ideas make perfect sense,” said Lainey. “I just don't understand why they're not working.”
“Neither do I.”
Dawn, pained by Quincey’s tired and slightly pathetic expression and sick of not knowing the details of this initiative, piped in: “When numbers don't add up, there's usually a reason.”
Quiney and Lainey turned to him, and Dawn continued: “I’m going to be prince consort, I want to contribute, that’s why I’m coming to the meeting tomorrow.”
“The queen said you would be exceedingly busy with wedding preparations so you wouldn’t be able to make it,” said Lainey.
Dawn and Quincey exchanged looks and said almost in unison: “What?”
“We should be doing everything we can to help the kingdom, right?” Dawn asked.
“Absolutely.”
“Maybe there should be a revitalization effort to bring the royal family into the 21st century, too…”
That’s when Pince came back, saying: “An excellent speech, Your Majesty. Now I need you to come meet the press with your most confident smiles…”
~
After returning to the palace, Dawn, Quincey, and Olympia had tea with the queen. It was an exceedingly uncomfortable hour to top off an exceedingly uncomfortable event.
“The press office assures me your speech today will do a world of good,” said Isabella from across the table.
“Less than a year into my reign,” Quincey started. “I feel like I'm running the kingdom into the ground.”
“Oh, you put much too much pressure on yourself.”
“It's my initiative, mother.”
“Quentin,” said the queen. “As you know, your father first proposed the need for such a program, but I oversaw the implementation, with the country’s full backing.”
“Yes, but…”
“Economic fluctuation is a fact of life,” Isabella stated and set her teacup back on its settee.
“Yes, but I can't help but feel father would be disappointed.”
“Oh, nonsense! You mustn't let this put a strain on the season. Or the wedding,” said Isabella and turned her attention to Dawn. “I hear the stress has been getting to you.”
Olympia took a deep breath and said: “Can we not have a single conversation without it being observed and reported?”
“Darling,” said the queen, laying a hand on her daughter's arm. Olympia withdrew, annoyed. “I just want all of you to be happy.”
“Well, it would help if you stopped meddling into our business,” Olympia suggested, clearly running out of patience. “We’re all adults here, after all.”
Isabella sighed. “I’ve decided to resume my active role in the governing of this country. In particular to help with the financial difficulties.”
“What?” asked Olympia. Quincey didn’t say anything and had an unreadable expression on his face. Dawn still felt too out of the loop with the country’s goings-on to say anything.
“But you seemed happy to retire?” argued Olympia.
“Only because I found it too difficult to go on without your father,” Isabella explained.
“Mother…” Quincey finally spoke up. “Thank you.”
~
That evening, everyone gathered together to decorate Queen Isabella’s Christmas tree. Dawn and Quincey’s families all sitting together in the same room gave Dawn some kind of whiplash. He never imagined this would be his life. While Tess and Olympia chose matching baubles, Dawn sat next to Quincey on the couch closest to the fireplace and took his hand. Ever since the speech, he’d been in low spirits and Dawn couldn’t exactly blame him.
“Hi,” he said.
“Hi,” replied Quincey. “I feel like I should apologize.”
“For what?” asked Dawn.
“For making you feel left out.”
“Am I feeling left out?” asked Dawn, incredulously.
“Are you?”
“Well, a little.”
“The pressures I'm facing as king are no excuse. Can you forgive me?”
“I really would like to help.”
Quincey smiled and squeezed Dawn’s hand. “Mother’s help will come in handy; she has a few decades of experience on this front.”
“Then I’m glad she’s decided to postpone her retirement.”
Dawn wasn’t exactly sure if he was glad but if the queen’s involvement would help Quincey’s workload, then it wouldn’t be all bad. He wished he could be more of use and that he would have already started his studies in political science. He had applied immediately after realizing he was going to actually have to do some governing, but he’d been advised to postpone his enrollment by a year. He’d done a semester of it already in university during his second year, so he wasn’t a complete beginner but now he was determined to get a Master’s. He had had fun writing his blog this past year, but he wanted to do something that could do some actual good in the world.
Suddenly a palace aide entered the room, looking quite disheveled.
“Your Majesties, you have a guest,” he said.
“Whoever could it be?” wondered the queen out loud. Dawn thought it must be Krampus because who else would it be showing up to the palace and causing a ruckus at this hour.
“Oh? Send them in,” instructed Quincey and got up.
After a few moments, a man entered the room. A very familiar man whom Dawn had been looking forward to never seeing again.
“Evander,” said Olympia venomously. “What are you doing here?”
Krampus indeed.

Women's silver bangles often have deeper cultural and symbolic meanings than just fashion statements. In this blog, we'll learn why silver bangles are still adored adornments and the rich symbolism they hold in various cultures.
India: Silver bangles are a symbol of tradition and prosperity in India, where traditional attire includes them. They are frequently presented to women at significant life occasions like weddings and festivals. Silver bangles for women are a symbol of purity, wealth, and good fortune in Hindu culture. They are said to protect wearers from harm and bring good fortune. Additionally, women frequently wear silver bangles during religious ceremonies and rituals because they are regarded as beneficial.
Near East: A Sign of Wealth and Status Silver bangles are used as both an ornament and a sign of wealth and status in many Middle Eastern cultures. Ladies frequently wear complicatedly planned silver bangles as a presentation of their family's success. Sometimes, these bangles are handed down from one generation to the next, becoming prized keepsakes that tell stories of wealth and family history. These bangles can vary significantly in design and craftsmanship, highlighting the region's extensive artistic heritage.
Africa: A Connection to Ancestry and Identity Silver bangles play a crucial role in expressing identity and heritage in various African cultures. Women of the Maasai people in East Africa, for instance, wear silver bangles to represent their age and marital status. These bangles are usually made by hand and can have intricate patterns and designs that are only found in that community. Silver bangles are also believed to have protective properties in some African traditions, shielding their wearer from harm and misfortune.
Asia de la Sud: A Symbol of Faith and Spirituality In countries like Thailand and Indonesia, silver bangles are frequently infused with religious significance. They are sometimes worn as amulets for protection and good fortune. In Buddhist societies, silver bangles might be honored by priests and given to lovers as an image of confidence and otherworldly responsibility. The intelligent nature of silver is additionally remembered to address lucidity and immaculateness of the brain, making these bangles significant embellishments in strict practices.
Cultures of the West: A Mix of Design and Feeling
In Western societies, silver bangles for ladies are frequently valued for their stylish allure and flexibility. They can be incorporated into more elaborate jewelry ensembles or worn as simple, elegant accessories. Silver bangles frequently have personal significance, despite the fact that the symbolism may not be as deeply rooted in tradition as it is in other cultures. They can be given as gifts to mark special occasions and represent friendship, love, and treasured memories.

Silver bangles for women are more than just pretty accessories. Top 10 African Inspired Fashion Trends – The Afropolitan Effect
Western fashion has often looked to African and African-American culture for inspiration but this time around the world seems to want an official romance with it. Here’s what you should know about when the affair started and how Afropolitans are changing the narrative.
Western designers have been flirting with African symbols, patterns and fibers since as far back as the 1970s when Yves Saint Laurent created a fashion collection that evoked images of an exotic Africa for non-African audiences. These collections were based on what Western designers imagined Africa to be as opposed to what it really was.
As expected, this cultural appropriation, which was not benefitting African designers or textile weavers in any way created an uproar because it was a one-sided affair and was not mutually beneficial. Africa was the glamorous mistress whom Western designers wanted to profit from but not empower. The resistance also came because no one can tell Africans how to be authentically African. Despite the deep cultural similarities, the countries in the continent share different political climates, geographic realities, languages and weather. Meaning that there is no one single narrative of African reality.
These diverse experiences of Africans gave rise to the term Afropolitan. Afropolitans are young Africans with a global outlook, upwardly mobile, culturally savvy, changing the perceptions about Africa through creative expression and redefining what it means to be African in the midst of a multitude of subcultures. To be Afropolitan means we understand that the world is a global village (heck, we are products of that globalization), and that design inspiration can come from anywhere. However, if the fashion world borrows from Africa we ask for recognition, inclusion and empowerment of African designers and retail brands that have worked hard to keep evolving African style, giving it new currency and new associations.
With this understanding, let’s take a look at the top 10 Afro-inspired trends for women that have found their way to the retail fashion streets.
#1 - Matching Couple Outfits
Matching or uniform outfits are the status quo for African couples and family members at special occasions such as weddings and birthdays. Fabric is bought in bulk and made into different glamorous attires by family and friends for an event, to serve as a form of identification, solidarity and love. The world has taken a leaf from this culture by updating pre-wedding photo shoots from matching T-shirts to full matching outfits for couples. on the other hand in winter outfit like boss jacket is the perfect one with the T-shirt for the couple.
#2 - Afro-Pop Culture T-Shirts
Just like African-Americans made hip-hop a dress code, the custom T-shirt era has ushered a longing for expression of different African realities especially by urban African youths. Using personal motifs like hair-do, music and food in bold and unusual ways is now the new cool.
#3 - Boubous & Kaftans
Loose fitting garments worn by African men and women called Boubous or Kaftans have become a wardrobe staple all over the world.
#4 – Tie & Dye
Cultures across the African continent have various tie and dye techniques and motifs signifying varying ideas. Today, these colorful tie-dye prints are a must-have for women all over the world.
#5 - Fringe Love
Traditional African fabrics like Kente. Akwete, Asooke are woven using different types of threads. The ends of the threads are left to hang out as decorative elements at the base and sleeve of garments. The African fringe has a western cousin but the fringe love is universal.
#6 - Head Wraps
African head wraps are made from local fabric or Ankara prints and tied round the head in an intricate style. The trendy head wraps of today are sewn together as ready-made fashion accessories..
#7 - Wooden Jewelry
Jewelry made from utilitarian products like wood have their inspiration from African sculpting and carvings.
#8 - Neck Rings
African neck rings were worn by the South Ndebele of South Africa as part of their traditional dress and as a status symbol for the wearer. Today, statement gold chokers shaped like rings are a hot fashion trend.
#9 - Ankara Print
Though it is said that these prints were brought to Africa by Dutch textile manufacturers, it is the stylish use of these materials by Africans that popularized the fabric. It was Africans who requested for specific patterns to be printed and it was Africans who helped it evolve and popularized it; we made it ours.
#10 - Head to Toe Monochrome/Matching Sets
Going head-to-toe in one color or pattern is a fashion trend that has its roots in African fashion. Yards of fabric are given to tailors to make matching tops and bottoms for both men and women as day wear and occasion wear. The world has caught this monochrome bug.
The rise of the Afropolitan class means that there is a hunger for truly meaningful clothing that helps Africans in Diaspora connect with their roots. How can you play your part? Seek out small independent designers and/or brands and patronize them because by doing this you are strengthening the systems and supporting designers both in Africa and in the Diaspora. Looking for where to shop authentic African designs with global spice? Check out Joe Stylee. Do you know other authentic African brands? Please share in the comments.

The African attire includes the Zulu inspired hat of the black panther mother called Isicolo and a distinctive style of blanket, known as Basotho blankets, worn traditionally by tribal people from Lesotho.
