I've been a FFVII fan for the past 15 years, but the game remake rekindled my love and attention for the franchise, and now I've been writing a fanfic about it!

"Life's Requiem" is an AU of FFVII (OG+Remake), which is a sequel to FFXVI... making this a crossover as well (that's why I call it an alternative "universe" and not "timeline"... if you know, you know).

Plus, to make it clear from the beginning: this is a Cloti (Cloud x Tifa) and Zerith (Zack x Aerith) focused story.

Now, about this AU's plot:

*WARNING FOR HEAVY CANON SPOILERS*

With that said, Cloud is his true self all the time, but with bad anger management. Hence, he doesn't have a memory/personality mashup with Zack's because he's alive (thanks to the powers he got from Hojo's experiments), but he's also amnesiac (for different reasons than Cloud).

After the Nibelhein incident, Hojo had an idea to experiment with some Soldiers and troopers using summoning materias instead of trying to create another Sephiroth. He wanted to recreate the Eikon Dominants from the Cetra's legends Shinra is aware of.

This leads to: Cloud doesn't question "who" but "what" he is instead, through the majority of the story, while dealing with post-traumatic amnesia about the last 5 years of his life and an unquenchable rage in his heart towards Shinra and Sephiroth.

Aerith and Zack lives because of all the stuff abovementioned (the story rolls totally different because of the crossover with FFXVI anyways).

Cloud received battle training from Zack during the five years they were held captive, so he's still badass but at 100% his own merit.

Denzel (from the FFVII AC movie) is introduced at part 2, and he is half-Cetra, too, and Marlene goes on the adventure with the gang.

Note: Although we'll have, most of the time, canon-typical violence, I will not "censor" it, so we'll have FFXVI levels of blood and gore.

It will have some lore expansion on the Cetras and Jenova; it's a mix with the Bearers and Mothercrystals lore from FFXVI.

We'll probably have OCs, too.

So she's around 25 years old and I wanted to make her a descendant of the Azran people (like Aerith from FF7 and the Ancients/Cetras). She was held captive in the headquarters of Targent (The Nest) since she was around 20 years old when she got kidnapped.

She decided to flee from the Nest one day and bumped into Descole, so they decided to team up against Targent. At first Des only keeps her around because she might be useful for his plans but he ends up getting attached to her bc she's silly. Eventually she decided to become a spy for him (and learn how to use a gun bc why NOT) and when the events of Azran Legacy unfolds she acts as Desmond's assistant and travels with the group ! oh and she has feelings for Des obviously uyfyueheuzhuhu and he kinda likes her back but his revenge is more important 👉👈

nel would 100% cosplay sailor moon! she'd be grumpy the whole time but would actually be rly pleased about it. sailor moon would probably be an icon to here lbr.... moon princess magical girl? sign her UP! erica would probably go for aerith from ff7! spunky flower girl who loves pink and can kick ass? yeah she's into that. sola's was the easiest because it would be nami from one piece hands down. money-loving playful cat-themed girl? yeah that's sola alright (esp bc nami is her biggest inspo). a more non-obvious choice for her would be ann from persona 5, especially in her metaverse outfit tho!

14. If your OC was a Dungeons and Dragons character, what would their class be? And/or: If they were playing D&D, what kind of character might they play? (these aren’t necessarily the same thing)

in the dnd universe nel would be a sea elf sorcerer! or maybe a water genasi sorcerer???? one of those. if she were playing, she'd play a a halfling barbarian! so much rage in such a tiny package..... perfect. erica would be a half-elf bard! playing, she'd probably go for an eladrin druid! and make her the most flowery druid of all time. also she'd be pink. i thought sola would be the easiest of the bunch bc she's from ffxiv but uh... dnd doesn't rly have a class that fits her main classes lmao well! well if she was a dnd character she'd be a tabaxi warlock! for warrior of light related reasons (if ya know ya know lmao). now if she MADE a character for dnd she'd play a changeling rogue! no do not look into the reasons for that :)

22. What type of Avatar The Last Airbender-type bender (or non-bender) would your OC be? Any bending specialties?

nel is easily a waterbender! for df and mermaid reasons but also bc water is the element of change, which is a big thing for her! as for erica, i'm honestly stuck between water and air for her? both could work well, but i might be leaning more towards air since she's very easygoing overall. sola is very much a firebender! not only bc her color scheme is mainly reds and blacks but bc she's a very passionate person, even if she hides that passion behind a veneer of playfulness.

29. Gun to their head, what is your OC’s fursona?

i can't believe u would go for this thanks.... nel would 100% say she doesn't have one but if forced her's would probably be some type of wolf? i wanna say it wouldn't be any specific species but with nel's personality nah she'd have all the details hashed out. i unfortunately don't know those details. except that it would be named luna. bc obviously. erica's would be a fox! a very pink fox... probably a fennec fox bc Big Ears Cute. she wouldn't make any sort of lore for it and it's name would probably just be botan, which is her pen name lmao sola's a catgirl already lmao (well.... ffxiv miqo'te catgirl not hrothgar catgirl) but her's would also be a fox! a red fox, which is the animal i associate with her the most. uhhh she'd probably come up with lore but only like to tease her friends about their own fursonas (i'm looking DIRECTLY at u alphinaud).

I saw you replied to my fear post, thank you for that. I’ve been trying to make an OC that is both a main and a character for writing like Aeryn is for you. My next question is can I take a canon character like Aerith, Rinoa, or Yuna for example as a base and then work to make them my own OC? I’ve been really into FF7 and the Atelier series, Aerith is the perfect candidate to be an Alchemist! Are any of your OCs inspired by your favorite characters in other series?

You're welcome! And I think that taking an existing character as inspiration is a good way to start with making an OC. I've done it a few times in some tabletop games, but also often don't consciously, only realizing there are similarities to characters I've loved after the fact.

In a tabletop game, I made a character initially inspired by a dancer character from one of the Lunar games, but the game didn't go anywhere (as often happens). I held onto that base concept, and then years later found a Pathfinder game the concept worked in perfectly, also letting me revise the character greatly.

My WoW paladin, Alynore, was inspired by characters like Susan Ivanova from Babylon 5, Paksenarrion from Elizabeth Moon's Deed of Paksenarrion novel series, and a little of Sleepy from The Black Company novel series. They're all dedicated military women, leaders, queer (1 bisexual, 2 asexual), no-nonsense, and value dedication, justice, and even kindness in their own ways.

I also took the idea of some favorite twin characters from a show who were taken in by their noble father, but ran away a few years later. I did a "what if a trusted member of the household was discovered to have let them run away, and now was charged with finding them?" and turned that into an OC in another game.

Aeryn maybe has some other Final Fantasy heroines in her makeup, but as I'd played through XIV twice before, I noted how the game treats what I call "Assumed Default WoL." They can't account for every permutation of the player character; even games like Dragon Age, or Mass Effect, or Baldur's Gate can't account for every version of their player heroes. But there are baseline assumptions, and so I baked that into the concept when I came up with Aeryn. An adventurous altruist, a determinator, a little bit of a gremlin--especially as time goes on and "this is my life now" really sets in (and WoL's dialogue options include a few more unhinged possibilities in some places). I looked at the influences and inspirations, said "OK, I know why they adventure, why does this girl?" In Aeryn's case, I started simple: I knew her brother was 1.0 WoL and never returned, so she was looking.

That was it. A lot of the rest of the details came later.

It's OK--and I often recommend--leaving a lot of backstory details loose and vague to start. I did the same with Dark Autumn, with C'oretta, Iyna, and various past characters in WoW and others. It let me add, change, shuffle, and write things in later. Sometimes even retcon and rework things.

Don't be afraid of that, especially when using other characters as starting points. Use the broad strokes summaries of their story and adjust it to fit in the new setting you're importing them to; goodness knows FF itself does this all the time (look at the Ivalice raid and Bozja story and related characters from Tactics and XII!). And then change things as needed, especially as you get ideas and interactions that feel "right" for the character and yourself, the stories you want to tell.

And maybe later you want to change them again (you come up with something new, lore drops make you want to play around with a different thing, etc), or make up AUs, or other characters to tell other stories. Play around, experiment, and remember nothing is set in stone.

Who was your first ever OC? Do you still “use” them? How have they evolved over time? That'd have to be Clematis and Nightshroud, my twin Transformers OCs. They've evolved a ton over the years. When I originally made them forever ago as a teen they were very mary-sueish and even shared a body with a split personality tick until Nightshroud eventually got her own body. Now they're completely separate bots with actual personalities. Clematis went from a tactician to a nurse/pharmacist inspired by characters like Aerith from FFVII and Iris from Megaman X4. Nightshroud went from just being an angry bot with no other personality trait to a bot that's still kinda angry but has a lot of insecurities and depth inspired by characters like Neo from RWBY and Wanda Maximoff from X-Men: Evolution.

Biggest self-insert OC? That would by my Pokemon OC, Amina

Do you have any OCs without stories? Will you ever create one for them? That'd be Amina again. I've never really decided what kind of story I'd want to do with her though I do have some things established for her like her hometown, first Pokemon and how she caught her other Pokemon. I'm just torn between standard Pokemon trainer route or going with my favorite AU for her where she's a Pokemon Ranger. I miss that game series!

Favourite OC? Look at you making me choose. It's a tie between Clematis and Nightshroud. I love them both for different reasons.

Which story has the most lore? My Transformers Animated fics I'm working on right now. I've had to cross-reference the AllSpark Almanac so many times, rewatch so many episodes repeatedly, research places in Detroit, find ways to make characters work that aren't entirely in the established Animated lore *cough*pharma*cough*. That's just the tip of the iceberg.

Debating on redrawing these 15+ years later.

These are the oldest drawings of mine that are still in my possession! These are from when I was 5-6, before my parents split. As you can see, I’ve always adored fantasy! I guess I have my sperm donor to thank for that.

My Dad/Baba calls himself an “old dragon” because he was apart of the original D&D nerds from the 70s (very cringe, Dad). When I was little, he’d invite his highschool friend group (my “uncles”) over to play for D&D. I was always too short to see over the folding table, but he always let me play with the minis he wasn’t using: or as I called them “the dead guys”. My first memories of WoW are of a little me sitting in his lap, letting me control OUR Tauren Druid, BigBully for maximum dad pun. Admittedly, my old man is more of an Everquest Stan. Loser!

My Dad got my Mom into geeky stuff too, though. Mom was mostly a PS1-2 gamer. She quickly became a fan of the Final Fantasy series and I have watched my own Mother cry at the death of Aerith. I see where I get my sensitivity for fictional characters from.

Though Mama Martyrette also played Everquest and WoW with us. She was the person to always play a pretty elf chick, also given a goofy name; Tooshietouché. Though, she never really touched MMOs after my parents divorced - it reminded her too much of my Dad. She ended up evolving into a Chad Facebook Mom, playing Candy Crush, FarmVille, Cafeworld, etc.

Still, she excitedly viewed my art and listen to me explain lore to her all the same. She even helped a little 12-13 year old me hang up all of my drawings on our shitty apartment wall.

I miss her a lot and I wish I could show her my newest pieces. Tell her how shitty but helpful art school was. Sit and watch Twilight together for the twentieth time, just to both cheer when Jacob rips off his shirt.

Instead I’m left with Dad, asking for free art nearly every time we speak. No, I’m not drawing your D&D OC, Baba.

Anyways, that’s some uhhh Martyrette lore for you, I guess. I thought it would be fun to kind of reflect on how and why I got into art and gaming, because the both of them go hand-in-hand for me.
