The Saga of K9
1977: Bob Baker and Dave Martin create K9 for the Doctor Who story The Invisible Enemy. He was only supposed to be in that serial, but production made him a companion as he would be popular with kids.
Tumblr media
After four seasons as a companion, K9 became an icon of classic Doctor Who. Due to a quirk of character rights at the time, Bob Baker and Dave Martin owned K9 as a character. This spawned decades of attempts to make a spin-off featuring K9...
1979: The Adventures of K9 and Other Mechanical Creatures:

Heroes & Villains The DC Animated Universe - Paper Cut-Out Portraits and Profiles
Elseworlds Addendum - Aqualad
Garth was an Atlantian born of the colony of Idyllists.  His mother was a powerful sorceress and, as he grew up, Garth discovered he possessed enhanced abilities, including augmented strength and speed as well as the ability to telepathically communicate with sea fauna.
The superstitious denizens of Idyllists were weary of Garth, fearing that he was a harbinger of doom. As such he was cast out and ultimately ended up taken in by Arthur of Atlantis, the hero known as Aquaman.  Garth would go on to become Aquaman’s partner and took on the name of 'Aqualad.' Following numerous adventures, the young hero would help to form the first iteration of the Teen Titans.
Years later, Garth became a pupil of the fabled sorcerer called Atlan who helped him hone magical skills that bestowed him hydrokinesis (the ability to mentally control water).  Now known as ‘Tempest,’ Garth continued to protect the seas and additionally served as a member of the Titans as well as the Justice League.
Although Garth was not featured in the original DCAU, the character did feature in the Teen Titans animated series as well as the Young Justice series (where Garth was voiced by actors Wil Wheaton and Yuri Lowenthal respectively).  The hero first appeared in the pages of the pages of Adventure Comics #269 (1960).

read some silver age aquaman comics (from the showcase presents: aquaman tpb)
aquaman's origin was surprisingly similar to the origin i was familiar with, which was movie aquaman, where his mom leaves atlantis, marries a lighthouse keeper, etc. she got kicked out of atlantis because she was trying to leave, which is a crime I guess.
aquaman being "King of the seven seas" does not convey any actual monarchy at this time, it just means the fish listen to him. He barely interacts with Atlantis, and before he saves them from extra-dimensional amphibians he mentions he is not allowed there because he's an outsider. but then they are happy with him when he saves them and says he's like their ambassador.
we learn about mysterious purple-eyed atlanteans. Evidently
Tumblr media
(from adventure comics 266)
anyway after this we see Garth (Aqualad - I actually can't remember if they've called him Garth yet or he just is always Aqualad). he has purple eyes but can breathe under water. Also, he is terrified of fish. He got kicked out of Atlantis because being around fish so much would drive him mad, so they thought it was better to send him to the surface world.
Aquaman cures Garth of his fish fear via having fish pretend to be toys and having Garth play with them. This works and also I guess no one tried this before in Atlantis. BUt anyway. Aqualad wants to live with Aquaman, but Aquaman wants him to go back to Atlantis b/c he doesn't think he can give him a good life.
Tumblr media
adventure comics 269
anyway, aqualad just fakes going in and actually comes back to hang out with aquaman, who has been missing him
Tumblr media
asd;glkj My favorite part of this is that Aquaman evidently never asked his name, he's just like "It's that kid".
Anyway, Aqualad stays with Aquaman in the end
Tumblr media
other stuff: aquaman always refers to the fish as his friends, in one comic he establishes an under water hospital for them. also 90% of his fighting style seems to be his fishy friends helping him out.

sorry for aqualad posting at like 2 am on a thursday morning BUT he is literally the only character ever. ive read a lot of comics w the young sidekick/inexperienced parental figure superhero dynamic and aquaman and aqualad is by FAR my favorite.
aqualad, at the start, is introduced as a child who is deathly afraid of schools of fish, to the point where aquaman has to step in and offer to help him get over his fear after learning about his past.
Tumblr media
[ID: Two comic panels from Adventure Comics #269. The first panel shows Aqualad surrounded by fish and clearly panicked. Aquaman reassures him. The second panel shows Aquaman holding a very frightened Aqualad, who pleads for Aquaman to send the fish away from him. /end ID]
this really sets up their relationship a lot through the next issues, as aquaman is trying his best to deal with parenting but is largely unprepared but aqualad loves him more than anything else in the world. aqualad doesn't really have any other adults in his life, as basically he was sent away from atlantis for his purple eyes, which are seen as a sign of the infant being unable to live underwater. hes been an orphan for five years and despite the fact that he can breathe underwater, the proximity to fish made him much too panicked to continue living in atlantis so he was shipped up to surface.
aquaman is SUPER patient with aqualad as he tries to get over his fear of fish and aqualad gets attached to him super quickly (honestly i feel the complete lack of anyone else who really is a good figure in his life really adds to this). but the big difference here, between a lot of the other stuff ive read that follows this trope, aquaman wants aqualad to go back to atlantis after he conquers his fear of fish. he LOVES the kid but he wants him to be in a place where he can thrive. even as aqualad is heading back to atlantis, aquaman is thinking about how much he misses him and how much he cares about him. aqualad ends up using fish to trick aquaman that he went to atlantis and then returns and is taken under aquamans wing. i think a lot of the first issue really stands out as different to other characters like this, but honestly the biggest thing is just how there is depth there in a specific way. they both kind of help each other out (and while that is present in other versions of this dynamic, it comes off differently here).
however, one of the most interesting bits comes in the issue after, Adventure Comic #270. This is Aqualad's second ever appearance and the issue focuses on Aquaman saving a fortune teller, who predicts that someone who he has recently met will cause him harm and take over his position as king of the ocean.
Tumblr media
[ID: A panel from Adventure Comics #270 that depicts Aquaman and Aqualad eating birthday cake underwater. Aquaman brings up that he doesn't have a home for Aqualad to live in, and Aqualad doesn't care, as long as he is with Aquaman. /end ID]
He is in denial that it is Aqualad at first but Aqualad keeps doing kind of fishy (pun intended) behaviors that make him convinced that the boy is out to hurt him. The end of the issue reveals that for Aquaman's birthday, Aqualad has been doing all of this to make them a home. what specifically is interesting about this to me is that neither of them have a home: aquamans mother was banished from atlantis and aqualad doesnt want to go back. and that in contrast to a character like batman, aquaman isnt providing for aqualad, aqualad is providing for them both. not saying this in the way of aqualad is forced into a more responsible role, more that they are moreso equals in the process of their partnership, which is something i find deeply interesting.
another example of this comes from Adventure Comics #278, where Aqualad goes to school for the first time. Aqualad is at first hesitant about school because of how much he wants to help Aquaman, but it is clear Aquaman wants what is best for him and wants him to have a more balanced life. Once he is reassured that he can still help Aquaman, he gets adjusted to school pretty quickly, until about half through, when helping someone, he gets hit over the head with a pipe (not even the first time this has happened). aquaman is SO concerned about him passing the exam to be able to fully participate in the school that he gets fish to help him jog aqualads memories. which imo just really shows the fact that they both really want to do all they can to help each other. and idk it means a lot to me because neither of them really have a ton of people in their lives and just really lean on each other.

hi!! i was just wondering if i wanted to learn more about kelex (or other kryptonian robots) what comics would you rec? thank you love ur superman posts
hello!! i’m probably not the best person to ask about this since so much of my own reading is pre-crisis and Kryptonian AI isn’t so much the focus in there... but here’s the result of some brainstorming
the silver age superman robots are technically kryptonian robots since clark builds them? I kind of love them because i think they represent how most of the world sees superman, in that they sit around until there’s a problem, save the day, and then shut down until they’re needed again, a perfect machine unencumbered by human inconveniences. also everyone knows they exist and no one is alarmed or concerned by this because it was a more trusting era. mostly they are used for secret identity preserving shenanigans. there’s tons of appearances of these guys but my personal favorites so far are Action 282 and 269 for identity shenanigans and Superman 163 for a hot mess of an existential crisis that is not examined at all.
TECHNICALLY kelex appears first in the post-crisis, but i think the little robot butler in Action 582 is a test run for them.
there’s a bunch of weird one-off kryptonian AIs in the bronze age, i remember the one from Superman 328-329 as an interesting but ultimately eh attempt at assimilation microbots.
matricomp (my beloved) was a kryptonian ai designed to approve or deny marriages. read World of Krypton (1979) for more on this, and also it’s one of the best resources for general pre-crisis Kryptonian culture. then if you want a big culture shock read World of Krypton (1987) for general post-crisis Kryptonian culture. Kelex shows up here and in the Byrne miniseries The Man of Steel (1986), and periodically afterwards, but I’ve read muuuuuuch less from here on out so I can’t point to any specifics.
I guess the Eradicator and Cyborg Superman are both dealing with this theme?
i have not read the arc in question, but Superman: Brainiac and the New Krypton arc would be a good place to look for post-crisis pre-n52 Kryptonian culture
while we’re on the topic of brainiac, the DCAU started the idea of brainiac as a Kryptonian AI (instead of how he’d been previously, an android from Colu). For his well done arc, the most important episodes are last son of krypton, stolen memories, and ghost in the machine from stas, twilight from justice league, and the season finale episodes of justice league unlimited season 2 (flashpoint, panic in the sky, and divided we fall). as far as comic appearances, brainiac appears quite a lot in superman adventures (1996), the tie-in comic. the best appearance imo is the arc in #22 and 23.

hello!! Do you have any Garth comic recommendations for someone (me) who has never read a Garth comic outside of a handful of TT issues before?
Tumblr media
Hi!! I definitely have some recommendations! This definitely isn't a comprehensive reading list by ANY means (although I do want to make one eventually!), but rather a small smattering of Garth centric comics that I think are fun or noteworthy! (These are also not in any particular order, just written out as they come into my brain lol)
Tempest (1996) - Obviously the Garth holy grail! There is no better Garth comic than this. It is peak and honestly one of the best books DC has ever put out. It's short, too (only 4 issues), so it's not too intensive of a read.
Tumblr media
Adventure Comics #269 - "The Kid from Atlantis" - Garth's first appearance! Don't get too hung up on the lore here, as it changes later on, but it's a sweet issue and obviously important!
Tumblr media
Adventure Comics #270 - "The Menace of Aqualad" - I love this issue for a multitude of reasons-- including the fully unintentional foreshadowing,-- but mainly I love it because it showcases what a sweet person Garth is and always has been.
Tumblr media
World's Finest Comics #133 - "Aquaman's New Partner -- Aqua-girl" - Again, the lore needs to be disregarded, but this issue fascinates me as an early iteration of Garth's insecurity about where he stands with Arthur/feeling useful.
Tumblr media
I probably shouldn't list everything individually so this post doesn't end up being a mile long, haha! So I'll start putting some groupings together:
Aquaman vol 1 #14, 18, 23, and #33
The Brave and the Bold #54
Teen Titans vol 1 #11 (not particularly Garth centric but just especially fun to me lol), #17, #19, #28, #29, #44-end of series. (Side note that @ttwasteland has a really good podcast covering volume 1 of Teen Titans! Actually, they have a lot of Teen Titans podcasts! Which is really useful for those who struggle to read Silver Age comics + I am immensely pleased with Hub's Aqualad enthusiasm!)
The Brave and the Bold (vol 3) #10
Death of a Prince (Technically, I recommend reading all of it, since it'll help you understand how things got to this point. But especially Adventure Comics #452 and the Aqualad stories in #453-455.)
Tales of the Teen Titans #85 & #86 + Teen Titans Spotlight #10
Teen Titans Spotlight #18
Teen Titans Spotlight #21
Aquaman vol 5 (Yes, all of it lol)
Showcase '96 #1
Teen Titans (Vol 3) #12-16
JLA/Titans
Titans (vol 1) At least the Devin Grayson portion, but I don't dislike the later stuff either!
There are also storylines that I think are fun or important that happen in across various books/stories (Obsidian Age, Aquaman vol 6, other (Teen) Titans stories, Blackest Night, CoIE, dare I even say Sword of Atlantis...), but I'll save those for a more in-depth reading list some other time! These ones are just popping up in my head rn.
If you want N52/Rebirth stuff, there are also a few stories that are pretty good. Sadly, they're pretty few and far between since canon changes and DC tossing their character bibles have left poor Garth in an odd, largely OoC limbo for years. Although I don't /love/ these stories as much as others, they still manage to vaguely pass the vibe check:
Nightwing & the Titans in Team Building (Robin 80th Anniversary 100 Page Super Spectacular) It's not super Garth centric, but it's fun!
Aquaman 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular #1 - “It’s a Family Affair”
Aquaman 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular #1 - “Lady in the Lake”
World's Finest: Teen Titans & DC's Spring Breakout "Relay for your Life" Garth's characterization in these... isn't right, but I feel like it has the spirit more than the vast majority of things published in recent years.
Titans (2023-) I... don't totally feel right putting this here, but I feel like slowly... extremely slowly... they are starting to fix Garth's characterization. We're not quite there yet-- and it is sadly written by Tom Taylor,-- but I feel like it's going to lead to something that's actually good for Garth again. (Aka so many hints towards a potential new Tempest mini-series or one-shot have been dropped lately, and I feel like this series will be context important.)
Ok, to try to finish this out: Also consider watching some stuff with Garth in it like Aquaman (1967) TV show / DC Super Hero Girls (2019), or reading some cute, non-canon series such as Tiny Titans! It's just good fun!!
Anyways, thank you so much for the ask!! I hope this helps!!! (And thank you for allowing me a chance to ramble lol!)

We get back to our roots, and read Adventure Comics #269, featuring the debut of the undisputed greatest Teen Titan, Aqualad! Hooray! There's also some fun stuff about Super Dogs, Space Pills, and stork rescue, but mostly we talk about the fact that one guy in the comic calls a mistake, "A costly boner." Enjoy! Enjoy!

#and while we’re at it why is the jla in all these fics for some reason not aware of robin/shocked to find out he exists #they have child sidekicks as well this is not a novel concept
The reason that people keep forcing "JLA finds out that Robin!Dick exists" because people;
Do not know anything about the timeline of the DCU. Robin!Dick was introduced in Detective Comics #38 (1940) which was even before Batman had his own "Batman" comics. The Justice League of America was introduced in The Brave and the Bold #28 (1960)
Believe that Robin is somehow special, which he arguably is because besides Speedy aka Roy Harper being introduced in More Fun Comics #73 (1941) it did take until The Flash #110 (1959) so very shortly before the Justice League introduction for the next Sidekick to be introduced (Wally West).
Apparently it is supposed to be "weird" and "strange" that Batman has a sidekick despite him having one since the day he got his own comic.
Sidenote for anyone curious: Garth was introduced in Adventure Comics #269 (1960) and Donna Troy was introduced The Brave and the Bold #60 (1965).
where are the supporting casts in batman fic. why is everyone just hanging out at the manor. why are the only leaguers mentioned clark and diana and maaaaaybe ollie if his parenting is getting slammed. where is everyone. why does no one have any friends. why do the friends they do have no rich inner lives outside of batangst. is gotham city trapped under the gd simpsons movie dome. dick grayson blink twice if ur being held hostage
