The Future of Multigenerational Living: How Junior ADUs Can Bring Families Closer Together
As families grow, the concept of multigenerational living is gaining popularity, and with the housing market in Los Angeles becoming more competitive, homeowners are looking for smart solutions to accommodate their loved ones. One such solution is the Junior Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU), a small but functional living space that is quickly transforming the future of family living.
At Structura Remodeling, we have been helping families across Los Angeles design and build Junior ADUs that meet their unique needs. As a leading junior ADU contractor in LA, our goal is to provide tailored solutions that promote both independence and closeness within families.
What Is a Junior ADU?
A Junior ADU, also known as a JADU, is a smaller type of accessory dwelling unit that typically measures less than 500 square feet. These units are often built within the existing footprint of a home, such as converting a garage or an unused bedroom into a livable space. A JADU provides all the essential amenities of a self-contained unit, including a kitchenette, bathroom, and sleeping area, making it perfect for multigenerational living, guest accommodations, or even rental income.
Why Are Junior ADUs Popular for Multigenerational Families?
Multigenerational living has grown in popularity due to several factors, including:
Cost-Effective Housing: Housing costs in areas like Culver City and Mar Vista continue to rise, making it challenging for extended families to live nearby. Junior ADUs offer a more affordable way to keep families together under one roof while maintaining privacy.
Increased Property Value: Adding a JADU to your home in areas such as Ladera Heights can significantly increase your property's value. The demand for multigenerational living solutions and guest accommodations boosts the market appeal of homes with Junior ADUs.
Flexibility: A Junior ADU can serve multiple purposes – whether you need extra space for a family member, a rental unit to generate additional income, or simply a private retreat for guests.
Closeness Without Compromise: For families caring for aging parents or adult children returning home, a Junior ADU offers proximity without sacrificing privacy. The design of these units fosters independence while keeping loved ones close by.
Design Trends in Junior ADUs
When designing a Junior ADU, functionality is paramount, but it doesn’t mean style should be overlooked. The latest trends in JADU design focus on maximizing space and creating modern, comfortable environments:
Open Floor Plans: Clever use of space with an open layout is key in small areas.
Natural Lighting: Large windows and skylights bring in natural light, making the unit feel bigger.
Energy Efficiency: Green materials and energy-efficient appliances are often incorporated to create a more sustainable living space.
Custom Storage: Custom cabinetry and multi-purpose furniture help maximize the storage potential in a limited area.
At Structura Remodeling, we work with homeowners to incorporate the latest design trends, ensuring that each Junior ADU is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Understanding the Costs of Adding a Junior ADU
The room addition cost in Los Angeles can vary depending on the size, scope, and materials used in the project. For a Junior ADU, the costs can be more affordable than traditional home additions because they often utilize existing space within the home. On average, the cost can range from $50,000 to $100,000, depending on the complexity of the design and features you choose.
For those interested in expanding their home with a JADU, it’s important to understand local zoning laws and regulations, especially in areas like Culver City and Mar Vista. We work closely with city planning departments to ensure that all permits are in place and that your project complies with current regulations.
Table: Average Costs of Junior ADUs by Region
Location
Cost Range
Los Angeles
$50,000 - $100,000
Mar Vista
$55,000 - $110,000
Ladera Heights
$60,000 - $115,000
Culver City
$50,000 - $105,000
FAQs About Junior ADUs
1. How long does it take to build a Junior ADU? It usually takes between 6 to 9 months from the initial design phase to project completion, depending on the complexity of the project.
2. Are there specific regulations for Junior ADUs in Los Angeles? Yes, Junior ADUs must comply with local zoning regulations, including size limits and occupancy rules. We handle all permitting to ensure your project follows city guidelines.
3. Can I rent out my Junior ADU? Yes, Junior ADUs can be rented out to generate income, though some areas may have specific regulations regarding short-term rentals.
4. How much does it cost to build a Junior ADU in Los Angeles? The cost of building a Junior ADU in Los Angeles ranges from $50,000 to $100,000, depending on factors such as materials, design, and labor.
5. What is the difference between a Junior ADU and a regular ADU? A Junior ADU is smaller (under 500 sq. ft.) and is often built within an existing home structure, whereas a regular ADU is typically a stand-alone unit.
Conclusion: Bringing Families Closer Together
Junior ADUs are a smart, cost-effective solution for multigenerational families looking to stay close while maintaining independence. Whether you’re in Culver City, Ladera Heights, or Mar Vista, building a Junior ADU can enhance your property value and provide a versatile living space for years to come.

Startup Uses Recycled Plastic To 3D Print Tiny Homes
A Los Angeles-based startup is using recycled plastic to 3D print prefabricated tiny homes. Azure Printed Homes out of Culver City, California, is shaking up the construction industry with their new line of 3D printed studios and tiny homes made from recycled plastic. They claim that their prefabricated backyard studios, offices, accessory dwelling units (ADUs), and tiny homes can be built 70% faster and are 20-30% less expensive than similar structures built the traditional way.
Currently, Azure is selling their 120-square-foot single room backyard studios for $25-thousand and their $40-thousand 180-square-foot studio bedroom ADU already has a three-month waitlist. They also offer a 360-square-foot studio for $80-thousand and a 900-square-foot two bedroom for $200-thousand. The smallest of their units can be printed in one day, wired up on the second day, and delivered on-site within two weeks.
The startup has a pretty big backlog of orders, so their one 3D printer has been working overtime, but they’re working on raising funds to buy more printers. And that’s good because Azure has big plans. They’re working with a real estate developer to build a community of 14 of their homes that will be unveiled later this year and they hope to expand to help tackle housing shortages around the world. Azure co-founder Ross Maguire believes 3D printing is the future of housing. "I can only see it becoming more and more prominent as we move forward."

Are you ready for some Kitchen Island Ideas? Tap into the heart of your home
Have you noticed while heading over to dinner or a cocktail party at a friend’s you find yourself falling into a case of kitchen envy? I think we’ve all been there at some point! So, you find yourself scrolling through Pinterest, design magazines and perhaps even looking at local contractors.
But maybe there’s something that keeps you from taking the next step and saying yes to that kitchen renovation. Did you know that the kitchen is considered the heart of your home? So, it would make sense that we are very careful with our home’s heart. If you're thinking bigger, like a complete room addition in Los Angeles, now might be the perfect time to start transforming your space.
Here are some kitchen island ideas that will make the heart of your home skip a beat…let your kitchen remodel flow with ease.
1. Natural wood accents meet that clean chrome. A modern yet classic kitchen island design idea.
Tumblr media
Imagine how it would feel to have this beautiful kitchen design in your home. Can you see your friends and family filling the matching wood chrome and leather bar stools? The clean-lined fronts of the kitchen cabinetry and the kitchen island add a next-level style to this overall design.
2. Teak and sleek! This kitchen island idea showcases a bright and open flow.
Tumblr media
Notice: how the pulls on the kitchen cabine try match the accents of the kitchen island stools. The clean lines of the white kitchen countertop against the white titles, and the balance created by the lighter wood flooring choice…so elegant!
3. Red and loving it! Feeling the style…this kitchen island idea accented by a pop of color.
Tumblr media
Here’s a great renovation tip. When it comes to your kitchen remodel you can create a huge wow factor by adding colorful accents. Inside this LA kitchen, you see how the pop of red that surrounds this two-toned kitchen island up-levels the playfulness of the design. A smart and timeless approach when you want to add a little bit more fun to your kitchen design.
4. Dark woods accents, exposed beams and wine! Elegant and perfect for a wine lover
Tumblr media
Build, design, and dream. When it comes to this kitchen island it’s about the little details. Notice the metal accents and, of course, who could overlook this gorgeous built-in chrome wine cooler. This kitchen design would certainly be a great remedy for that pesky kitchen envy. For homeowners in the area, home remodeling in West Adams can be the solution to revamping your space with thoughtful design.

Austin Startup, Kasita, Visits Seven Cities to Preview Its Solution to Housing Crises – Dallas Business Journal
AUSTIN, Texas, March 19, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — Kasita manufactured homes and communities are known for high-design and high-quality while occupying small financial and geographic footprints. The Austin-based startup is pioneering the future of housing by offering America’s cities a solution to a lack of housing supply and associated housing costs, construction complications, disaster relief, workforce housing and providing aging populations an opportunity to earn passive income through the addition of accessory dwelling units to properties they own.
Starting in Culver City, California on March 30th, Kasita kicks off its first-ever "Roadshow," visiting the cities of San Jose, San Francisco, Santa Rosa, Reno and Denver, all of which are affected by the housing crisis. Whether it be a shortage in affordable urban living, overcrowding or a need for more multifamily living options, each location faces their own unique issues for which Kasita is a solution. On the Roadshow, Kasita will bring its widely-acclaimed innovations from concept to experience, showcasing the latest iteration of "Independent," the brand’s single-family micro-home / accessory dwelling unit (ADU), and share additional insights on its newly-launched "Community" model – a stackable, multi-family platform.
"We can build a Kasita home in less than a month and they are move-in ready the day they are installed. At a starting price of $89,000, we offer homeowners, developers and hoteliers a value-driven quality product that solves many of the usual hassles of construction, allowing developers to bring product to market 40-50% faster than conventional construction. Kasita occupies a small footprint allowing for installation on land areas otherwise overlooked by developers as suitable for housing," says Martyn Hoffmann, Kasita CEO.
The Roadshow will visit seven U.S. cities, concluding at the influential Urban Land Institute real estate conference in Detroit:
March 30-31, The Platform, Culver City, Calif. 8850 Washington Blvd, Culver City, CA 90232 April 3-4, Swenson Builders’ Lot, San Jose, Calif. 115 Terraine Street, San Jose, CA 95110 April 6-7, Mission Bay, San Francisco, Calif. 4th St & Mission Bay Boulevard North, San Francisco, CA 94158 April 10-11, Luther Burbank Performing Arts Center, Santa Rosa, Calif. 50 Mark West Springs Rd, Santa Rosa, CA 95403 April 13-15, City Plaza, Reno, Nev. 10 N Virginia St, Reno, NV 89501 April 20-21, Great Divide, Denver, Colo. 1812 35th St, Denver, CO 80216 May 1-3, Urban Land Institute, Detroit, Mich. COBO Center 1 Washington Blvd, Detroit, MI 48226
In each market, Kasita will invite potential dwellers, interested renters, real estate developers and media to enter and personally experience Kasita living for the first time outside of Austin. Highlights of the cross-country Roadshow include open houses, VIP events, private tours, breakfast parties and cocktail hours in desirable locations, such as The Platform in Culver City and the Great Divide Brewing Company Barrel Bar in Denver. Visitors will be able to test mood-activated smart home technologies that come standard with each unit as well as appreciate the marriage of high design and high amenity that Kasita is known for.

TRENDY IDEAS TO HIDE YOUR REFRIGERATOR CABINET
Tumblr media
Open space floor plans continue to be popular. I must admit having our kitchen open to the living and dining space is great. In our old kitchen I spent a lot of time as the family chef at the stove facing the wall. Cooking became a lonely chore. Now that we have an open floor plan kitchen when I am cooking, I am looking out at the crazy hubbub of our family, and I love it. When preparing a meal for family and friends, I can be part of the conversation, and people are more inclined to pitch in. We have fun cooking and creating together. Even the kids are more curious about meal prep and getting in on the action.
Every solution to a problem seems to create the following problem. Since our kitchen is part of the living space, we need it to be way more streamlined, organized, and less noticeable. A.K.A. who wants to walk into your home and have your eyes immediately focused on kitchen chaos. We needed to find a home remodeling for all our small appliances, expand our pantry and add additional storage space for random projects and new kitchen gadgets.
We were able to solve those issues relatively quickly. There are so many great storage organizers available. We repurposed a coat closet as our new pantry and moved the kid’s ongoing projects to the laundry /mudroom.
THE ONE ISSUE THAT STOPPED ME IN MY TRACKS WAS HOW DO YOU HIDE THE REFRIGERATOR, OR HOW DO YOU MAKE YOUR FRIDGE LOOK LIKE A CABINET?
That became my obsession. I walked into the house, and all I could focus on was the fridge. So, I went on a quest to solve this design flaw, and now I will pass on this valuable wisdom to anyone desiring a design upgrade for their kitchen.
There are many options to hide a refrigerator. You can use refrigerator paneling, hide a fridge in a kitchen cabinet, create a refrigerator closet, or have the fridge built into the wall. Also, you can have custom cabinets built for the refrigerator, find out how to make your fridge look like a cabinet, or turn a cupboard into a refrigerator cupboard.
You might want to start by checking out the kitchen design magazines, looking at ways to have your fridge built-in to a cabinet, or an interesting way to create a hidden fridge cabinet. Here are some of the top creative design ideas I found.
REFRIGERATOR CABINETS
Hiding the entire kitchen- One designer created a sliding wooden panel that made the refrigerator and the whole kitchen disappear behind a sliding wood-paneled wall. Great for when you have company and do not want the kitchen to be the center of attention. Or after dinner, don’t do those dishes, just hide them.
Custom cabinets for the Refrigerator- One of the best ways to camouflage your fridge is to have custom cabinets that match the rest of your kitchen cabinetry to conceal your fridge. It gives your kitchen a seamless and elegant look. Whether you are going for a modern and contemporary style or a more formal and traditional look, custom cabinets work with all kitchen designs.
Refrigerator Closet— Constructing or repurposing a closest for your refrigerator may be the simplest way to hide it. It might be a very cost-effective solution as well. The price of a closet door is less than custom kitchen cabinetry. If you already have the closet space, then consider this option.
Refrigerator Paneling- A unique design idea for people going with the trend of rustic, green, or boho sheik is wide horizontal wood paneling for the entire kitchen. Create the cabinets and cover the fridge in repurposed paneling. Hide your refrigerator in a cabinet and create a powerful design statement.
Fridge built into the wall- For a super streamline, look have the refrigerator built into the wall. With the refrigerator recessed, you can choose between a cabinetry exterior, a closet door, or have the entire wall of cabinets and the refrigerator look like a puzzle of panels. It will look more like built-in furniture than a kitchen.
After doing my research and getting some ideas on my own, I brought in an expert kitchen contractor from my Los Angeles area. They guided me in choosing the best option for my refrigerator cabinet, ensuring that we achieved the design aesthetic without sacrificing practicality and convenience.
