Tilting Diesels!

In June, we said さようなら to Japan's first tilting electric multiple unit (see that post also for why you'd want tilt in the first place), launched in 1973. For some reason, adding tilt to Diesel multiple units needed a bit more time - my guess is engine vibrations play a part. Nonetheless, in 1989, JR Shikoku did it, launching the 2000 series tilting DMU. The company has continued with the technology, and the latest generation, the 2700 series shown above, is 5 years old this month.

The 2000 series is still in service, but I haven't yet seen any. However I have seen and ridden two derivatives of the 2000: the JR West KiHa 187 above, which reminds me of trains in England with its yellow front, and the streamlined Chizu Kyûkô HOT7000 below.

These trains run intercity services along the picturesque San'in coast - the Super Matsukaze and Super Oki in Yamaguchi, Shimane and Tottori prefectures -, and between the San'in and San'yô coasts - the Super Hakuto and Super Inaba in Hyôgo, Okayama and Tottori prefectures, which is how the HOT7000 got its name.

With these trains, Tottori to Himeji is done in under two hours, a similar time frame to what electric tilting trains can do between Okayama and Yonago. The mountains are also quite scenic, and the HOT7000 has a feature that I don't think I've seen anywhere else: a live cab cam.

Another country worked to develop tilting DMUs: Germany. This culminated with the high-speed ICE T, which I'm yet to encounter, but in the late 1990s, at a similar time to the Japanese examples above, Adtranz built the RegioSwinger, officially Baureihe 612. These yellow and white examples work in the South-West corner of Germany, along the Rhine between the Bodensee and Basel, with a couple of incursions into Switzerland.

Riding a tilting train is peculiar. 8° of tilt doesn't sound like much, but it adds up with the camber of the tracks to produce a visually impressive experience. The tilt is really noticeable, and it does what it's supposed to do, compensating the G-forces so you don't feel the pull to the side through corners. The downside of DMUs is that they tend to be quite noisy - the engines sound like they're giving 110% all the time! On the whole, I really like them.

Kent ulaşımının can damarı İzmir Metrosu’nun ilk tren seti ADtranz MD 501, 24 yıldır ilk günkü gibi İzmirlilere hizmet vermeye devam ediyor.
1996 yılında üretilen ve 2000 yılında ilk seferine çıkan MD 501’in İzmir Metro AŞ’nin kendi atölyesinde yaptığı periyodik bakım ve restorasyonlar sayesinde uzun yıllar İzmirlilere hizmet vermesi hedefleniyor.
zmir Metrosu’nun ilk tren seti, ADtranz MD 501, hafif raylı ulaşım sisteminde ilk günkü gibi İzmirlileri taşımayı sürdürüyor. Merhum İzmir Büyükşehir Belediye Başkanı Ahmet Piriştina döneminde kurulan İzmir Metro AŞ’nin Üçyol–Bornova arasında hizmet vermesi için aldığı tren setlerinin bakımı özenle yapılıyor.   Milyonlarca yolcu ve kilometre 22 Mayıs 2000 tarihinde hattın açılışından önce kente gelen ilk tren seti 1996 üretimi ADtranz MD 501, İzmir Metro AŞ’nin kendi atölyesinde yaptığı mekanik bakımlar, iç ve dış aksamında yapılan restorasyonlarla randımanlı olarak hat üzerinde seferlere devam ediyor. 24 yılda 1 milyon 800 bin kilometre yol yapan, milyonlarca yolcu taşıyan MD 501’in uzun yıllar daha İzmirlilere konforlu bir yolculuk sunması hedefleniyor.   Sayılkan: 1 milyon 800 bin kilometre yol yaptı İzmir Metro A.Ş. Genel Müdürü Ertan Sayılkan, “501 numaralı trenimiz filomuzun ilklerinden. 1996 üretimi bir tren. Trenimiz 2000 yılından bu yana da yolculu işletim yapıyor. Düzenli olarak diğer trenlerimizle birlikte çalıştırıyoruz. Periyodik bakımlarımızla trenimiz hala ilk günkü gibi ve ticari ömrü de yapılan bakımlarla artırılmış durumda. Dışarıdan hizmet satın alımı yapmıyoruz. Rulman, kart gibi tüm bakımları ekiplerimizle yapıyoruz. Trenlerimizi hiçbir sıkıntı yaşamadan, ticari ömrünü uzatarak kullanıyoruz” dedi.  
İzmir Metrosu’nun Üçyol-Bornova arasındaki ilk etabının temeli Ekim 1995’te Burhan Özfatura döneminde atıldı. 2000 yılının Mayıs ayında ise merhum Ahmet Piriştina’nın başkanlığı döneminde tamamlanarak hizmete açıldı.

Retomando as obras com tecnologia alemã, usina nuclear de Angra 3 vai gerar 12 milhões de megawatts-hora por ano e milhares de novos empregos
Com tecnologia de empresas alemãs, a expectativa é que 12 milhões de MWh sejam gerados por ano na usina nuclear de Angra 3. Tal potência consegue atender o consumo da região Norte ou quase todo o Centro-Oeste do país. A Eletronuclear realizou na última sexta-feira (11), na central nuclear, em Angra dos Reis, o reinício das obras de concretagem da usina. O evento contou com a presença de Eduardo Grivot de Grand Court, novo presidente da empresa e também de membros da diretoria da Eletronuclear.
Obras de concretagem começaram em fevereiro
A preparação para o processo de concretagem das obras começou já no mês de fevereiro deste ano, com a assinatura de contrato com o consórcio Agis, composto pelas empresas Ferreira Guedes, ADtranz e Matricial. De lá para cá, o consórcio atuou na preparação do canteiro de obras para a retomada da usina nuclear Angra 3, o que contou com a montagem de uma central de concreto no local.
 Vale ressaltar que a qualidade do concreto, tanto dos elementos agregados em si, tais como areia, água, pedra, cimento, entre outros, quanto sua proporção na mistura final, o famoso traço, são fruto de uma rigorosa avaliação técnica por parte da Comissão Nacional de Energia Nuclear (CNEN), responsável por autorizar o reinício do procedimento de concretagem e também por parte da própria Eletronuclear. 
Plano de Aceleração do Caminho Crítico de Angra 3
Desde o mês de setembro, quando foi inaugurada a central de concreto, até o dia de realização das obras de concretagem, diversos testes de campo e em laboratório foram feitos para que a qualidade do material utilizado na construção fosse garantida.
O lançamento do concreto compõe o Plano de Aceleração do Caminho Crítico de Angra 3, que tem como objetivo principal concluir as obras civis dos principais prédios da usina nuclear de Angra 3, incluindo o edifício do reator e outras instalações ligadas à segurança nuclear.
Nesta etapa, há outros pontos essenciais que devem ser cumpridos, como o fechamento da esfera de aço que fica dentro do edifício do reator, e a instalação de equipamentos essenciais como a piscina de combustíveis usados, a ponte polar e o guindaste do semipórtico.
Eletronuclear assina termo visando à compra de resfriadores de calor 
Em maio deste ano, um acordo importante para o mercado foi fechado entre a Nuclep e a Eletronuclear, que está ligado à produção e entrega de novos trocadores de calor. Os equipamentos serão utilizados na usina nuclear de Angra 3, além disso, o contrato em si responsável por legitimar o negócio, foi assinado já em abril. A cerimônia de assinatura foi realizada na sede da Nuclep, no município de Itaguaí (RJ).
Estiveram presentes no evento Cláudio Castro, Governador do Rio de Janeiro, Contra-almirante Carlos Seixas, o presidente da Nuclep, ex-presidente da Eletronuclear, Leonam Guimarães, Celso Cunha, presidente da Associação Brasileira para Desenvolvimento de Atividades Nucleares (ABDAN).
O valor do contrato a ser assinado entre as duas empresas equivale a mais de R$ 400 milhões e demonstra a importância do desenvolvimento desse setor energético para o Brasil. Durante a cerimônia, o governador fluminense ouviu também algumas necessidades do setor nuclear como um todo.
A iniciativa da realização da assinatura na unidade da Nuclep veio de Júlio Lopes, Deputado Federal, que sempre foi interessado e ativo em pautas nacionais ligadas à energia elétrica brasileira.

Funny Headcanon
When it comes to trains specifically, one adage that's true across all types of locomotive is this: The friendliness is directly correlated to the size.
What this means is that while a medium sized engine or smaller (in this case meaning anything below a 2-10-0 or equivalent size) will be normal or perhaps overly friendly to certain individuals, and small engines (0-6-0T, 0-4-0, etc) are much more likely to be jackasses, large locomotives (anything over a 2-10-2 or a certain tonnage/power/length standard - ie: Anything like the EMD DDA40X, the GE AC6000CW, the Russian 4E5K, or the Adtranz IORE - or ANY articulated steam engine regardless of size) will be so unashamedly friendly that they can and will try to - and succeed! - in making friends with ANYTHING.

All of these things have been supposedly befriended by large locomotives. These claims are backed up by sometimes very reliable sources - including sometimes the element or concept that the locomotive has befriended. How this is accomplished is unknown.
Seriously - nobody has a goddamn clue how they do it. It’s scientifically impossible.
Here’s an example:
In the 1960s an N&W Y Class became very close friends with a local mountain range, and nobody believed her until she came back one weekend and told everyone that she went hiking with her friend. 
They still didn’t believe her - for fairly understandable reasons, until she produced a fucking stack of polaroid pictures that very clearly showed her camping on the peak of a mountain with a giant boulder. 
This still didn’t convince anybody until a very well respected manager from the railway came in , saw the engine in question, and confirmed everything - he’d thought he’d had a damn stroke on his hiking trip that weekend when he saw a locomotive and a rock climbing a hiking trail, and had taken pictures to confirm. 
The locomotive claims that it was nothing major, she just wanted to spend time with her friend. The N&W engineering department had an open bounty on anyone who could explain how this happened. 
It was never claimed, because how the fuck do you explain that?

The IC3 (or class MF) is a Danish-built high-comfort medium/long distance diesel multiple-unit train. The sets were built by ABB Scandia (later purchased by Adtranz, which itself was subsequently acquired by Bombardier Transportation) in Randers. This train model has been operating in Denmark and Sweden since 1989 and are still operating today. The name indicates simply that it is a three-carriage InterCity trainset. Development of the IC3 started in 1984, production started in 1986, and they entered service in 1991. However, its roots can be traced back further. In 1972, DSB celebrated its 125th anniversary, and at the same time made some large changes. First of all, two years later, in 1974, a completely new timetable system, the K74, was introduced. Secondly, the concept of lyntog were removed as the foundation of the long-distance traffic, and instead a new InterCity concept took over that role. After a few years, a new concept emerged, the so-called APOs, which were work-groups tasked with specific areas. There were groups for electrical locomotives, diesel-powered locomotives, and others, including the "long distance train" APO group. The long-distance train - APO was originally tasked with finding a suitable train for long-distance traffic. However, it was later rumoured that the lyntog-concept might be re-introduced within a few years, and so it was decided to find a suitable design for that concept. Several requirements were made: primarily to use air-conditioning for cooling and heating of passenger areas, and be able to use either electric or diesel propulsion. The second requirement were due to the fact, that the Danish politicians had yet to decide whether or not to fund a proposed electrification of the mainlines of the Danish railroads. At the time, no such train were available, so the group designed one themselves. In order to avoid propulsion units in the train (and thus reducing variants and development costs), it were designed to use a locomotive to haul it, and equip the end wagons with driver cabins. The train were designed a set of 5 wagons, with a service wagon in the middle (containing a small kiosk, and other facilities) and 4 passenger wagons. The first IC3 set was delivered in 1988, but unfortunately suffered from a number of teething problems, primarily due to its (at the time very advanced) computer systems. One example was that it would lock the toilet door with no apparent reason (it was programmed to lock the door when either someone was in there and requested so via a button, or when the toilet-system suffered a problem). Another issue was that snow would build up around the diaphragms blocking the drivers view. By late 1990, the majority of these problems had been solved, and so the train entered service in 1991. In 2017, DSB announced the IC3 stock would receive a 10 year life extension, allowing them to replace IC4 trains. In 2018, the first ERTMS-retrofitted IC3 left the workshop. All IC3's are to be converted to ERTMS from the proprietary ZUB 123 ATC. DSB will try out mass producing the conversion on the remaining IC3's in the fall of 2019.
