Hopefully this isn’t considered derailing because I’m still being positive and on topic 😅but, this doesn’t just apply to cats!
Obviously, there’s puppy bias with dogs, too. And most animals, unfortunately, will be overlooked if they have a disability, or special care requirements, or even just look different.
This is where we get into my story!
I’ve had guinea pigs for almost half my life. They’re so important to me. They’re also social critters, so you should always have two or more!
In late March of this year, my beloved Baby Pig unfortunately passed away. She was five years old, so she lived a good piggie life… although it was very sad to see her go. This left my younger piggie, Pepper Popper, (who is 3), on her own. I could tell she was depressed from losing her friend, so I wanted to get her a new buddy ASAP.
I looked at my local shelter, and… no guinea pigs. So I went on Petfinder to look for female guinea pigs that needed homes near me.
This is when I saw Peanut. (This is one of the photos that was on her listing!)
Tumblr media
She was almost 7 months old, and was born into the shelter as a foster (mom was preggo when she was surrendered). Her mother and her sisters had already been adopted out… Peanut was the only piggie at the shelter. Because, unfortunately, she was dealt a bad hand when it comes to adoption.
As you can see in the picture, she has a little protrusion under her eye. This is called pea-eye, and was something she was born with; it means there’s just a buildup of fat under the conjunctival sac (AKA, her inner eyelid) that causes it to stick out like that. It doesn’t affect her health at all! The only thing I’ve noticed is that she struggles to close that eye all the way, but that’s not a huge issue because guinea pigs rarely close their eyes beyond occasionally blinking anyways. But, it makes her look different.
It’s harder to tell this in the photos, but Peanut also has dark red eyes. (They only really appear red when light hits them) I didn’t even know this until after I’d already adopted her and was trying to look up what color her eyes would be considered, but apparently, there is a STRONG bias against small animals (bunnies, guinea pigs, rats & mice, etc) when it comes to adoption if they have white fur and red eyes. People think it’s creepy, I guess?
But, those two things didn’t deter me at all. You honestly barely think about her eye after a bit, and she’s wicked cute. So, we drove an hour to the shelter to pick her up, so she could go home after being a shelter pet for literally her whole life.
It took a while for her to warm up to everyone, except Pepper Popper who she got along with after an hour of figuring out who was boss. Out of all the piggies I’ve had, these two have the strongest bond. They’re the only ones I’ve known to sleep together, and I literally can’t get pictures of Peanut without Popper in them, because Peanut is always by her side. They’re double trouble.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyways this is my plea to please think about adopting a pet who is older, or looks different, or who has a disability, or who may otherwise struggle to get adopted. They will love you just as much as any other pet, if not more for finally taking them home :3
(And also, when it comes to small animals, please consider adoption. If you really want a young animal, look to ethical breeders. Don’t go to a pet store)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was meant to be a quick warm up, but it turned into a comic that I’ve wanted to draw for a while. This is something that is extremely important to me, and I appreciate it if you read it.
A while ago, I heard a story that broke my heart. A family went a cat shelter to adopt. The daughter fell in love with a 3-legged cat. The father straight up said “absolutely not”. Because he was missing a leg. That cat was that close to having a family that loved him, but the missing leg held him back. Why?!
Many people have the initial instinct of “nope” when they see an imperfect animal. I get it, but less-adoptable does NOT mean less loveable. 9 out of 10 people will choose a kitten over an adult cat. And those 10% that would get an adult cat often overlook “different” animals.
All I want people to do is be open to the idea of having a “different” pet in their lives. Choose the pet that you fall in love with, but at least give all of them a fair shot at winning your heart.
Don’t dismiss them, they deserve a loving home just as much as any other cat. They still purr, they still love a warm lap, they still play, they still love you. Trust me, next time you are in the market for a new kitty, just go over to that one cat that’s missing an eye and see what he’s all about!

Finding Affordable Cockapoo Puppies Near Me: How to Adopt Pets on a Budget
With their cute outlook, merry temperament, and hypoallergic coat, Cockapoos have won the hearts of many dog lovers. Playful, intelligent, and low-shedding, this crossbreed combines the best of both parents: the sweet-natured Cocker Spaniel and the intelligent Poodle. Owning a Cockapoo comes with its price tag, though. Finding an affordable option may sometimes be overwhelming. If you are searching for "Cockapoo puppies near me", but you make reservations because of the costs, this guide will help you through finding a quality healthy Cockapoo puppy while sticking to your budget.
Tumblr media
Cockapoo puppies near me
1. Cockapoo Puppy Prices: What to Expect
The cost of a Cockapoo puppy can vary greatly based on the name and reputation of the breeder, lineage of the puppy, location, and demand for this breed. The average price range for Cockapoos would be about $1,200 to $3,000. Champion bloodlines from top breeders would sell far more expensively than the price range mentioned herein. These price points will help one to understand planning realistically and budget your money apportioned for such things.
Price is Influenced by the Following Directions:
Breeder's Reputation: Reputed breeders who invested in health testing, proper care, and early training have been known to charge more.
Pedigree of the Puppy: Generally, puppies with AKC-registered parents or with champion bloodlines cost more money.
Health and Vaccinations: The ones that come already vaccinated, dewormed, and with an initial health check are so much more expensive, but this is how you ensure that you go home with a healthy pet.
Location: The cost of living and the popularity of Cockapoos in your area may determine the cockapoo puppy price.
Tumblr media
2. Try to Find Local Breeders and Avoid Middlemen
Starting with typing "Cockapoo puppies near me" would be the best possible option. You can usually buy directly from a local breeder at a much lower cost than going through some third-party service or a pet store that creates huge markups on the dogs. You get directly to the breeder and you can take an opportunity to see the place of breeding and get your puppy's parents met as well.
Tips for Finding Reputable Breeders:
Use Local Listings and Social Media: Most breeders will advertise locally on online directories, community boards, or social media groups devoted to pet adoptions.
Local Pet Expos: great way to meet breeders, view the puppies, and inquire about breeding.
Word of Mouth: Ask around with local veterinaries, groomers, or other dog owners who could refer to you some trustworthy breeders in your area.
3. Consider Adopting from Rescues/Shelters
Besides being less on the wallet, adopting a Cockapoo will be more rewarding if it is done through a rescue organization or animal shelter. On average, the adoption fee usually runs way more reasonably than buying from breeders, between $300 and $600. This generally covers their initial medical costs, such as vaccinations, spaying/neutering, and microchipping.
To adopt Cockapoo puppies:
Check Breed-Specific Rescues: Many Poodle, Cocker Spaniel, and Doodle rescue groups have Cockapoos available for adoption.
Search Pet Adoption Websites: Such websites as Petfinder, Adopt-a-Pet, and local animal rescue sites often have Cockapoos seeking new homes.
Contact Local Shelters: Sometimes Cockapoos do find their way into your local shelters due to owner surrenders, so this is a good place to check.
4. Be Open to Older Puppies or Adult Dogs
While most people are drawn to young puppies, older puppies and adult dogs have a lower price more often than not. Older Cockapoos can be just as loving and loyal as the young puppy and already house-trained, making going into your home even smoother. Plus, adult dogs usually don't have quite so many upfront costs since vaccinations and basic training have already been taken care of.
5. Budget an amount extra to prevent chances of surprises.
Although it is possible to find an affordable Cockapoo puppy, other additional cockapoo puppy prices surround it. These include:
Early Veterinary Visits: Your puppy needs to be vaccinated, dewormed, and checked for their health.
Supplies needed: food, bedding, toys, grooming supplies, and crate.
Training: Obedient and intelligent, Cockapoos are rather easy to train; however, many owners find that their dogs benefit from professional training classes for better obedience and socialization.
6. Red Flags to Watch When Finding Low-Priced Cockapoo Puppies
While affordability is critical, be very wary of those deals that seem too good to be true. Avoid breeders who:
Poor Living Conditions: The surroundings should be clean and the puppies healthy as well with energy. Don't give health clearances: Most breeders will make available health checks and vaccination documents of a dog. Pressure You to Buy Quickly: Many times, this is a tactic that puppy mills will use in order to get rid of sick or poorly bred dogs.
7. Consider Financing Options
Some breeders make financing or installment plans available, which will definitely make buying a Cockapoo puppy easier on them. Financing, of course, increases the overall price due to interest rates, but may be a serious option when this helps spread out the payment without having to compromise on the quality of the puppy.
Conclusion
Finding an affordable "Cockapoo puppies near me" requires some research, patience, and deliberation. Your ability to find an affordable Cockapoo puppy will be accomplished by investigating local breeders, adopting from rescues, and being open to older dogs. Remember, the ultimate goal is to obtain a healthy, well-adjusted pet that will bring joy into your home for many years to come and make your investment of time, effort, and resources very well worth it.

Hello, everybunny!
My name is Mochi. (Adopted on 5.3.2020) I have snow white furs, pastel blue eyes, and helicopter lop ears. I was rescued and fostered by a person driving by, from a busy suburban street in Queens, New York. My foster parents tried their best to find my owner(s) by asking nearby neighbors and posting on Craigslists but no one came forward looking for me. They finally notified a local rabbit rescue and I got listed on Petfinder.
While I stayed at my foster family’s home, I got along with their dog and cat. Then one day, a rabbit rescue lady showed up and I was taken to a vet. I got clean bill of health but I was told that I am a little overly excited teen. I did try to play and hump the cat a few times. Apparently, someone wanted to adopt me so I got fixed for my best behavior and future health. After about a week, a couple came to my foster parents’ front yard to meet me. We had a little meet and greet time and later that day, the couple decided to take me to their home. I left Queens and headed over to Manhattan.
When I arrived to new home, humans just watched me from distance at first. When I got let out of the carrier, I didn’t move around much because I felt dizzy and disoriented from the car ride. Also, I was a little nervous with the change of my surroundings. I eventually smelled food and started eating. Humans still left me be for while so I decided approach them first. The female human gave me a nice pet while I sniffed her pants. She gently pet me on my back. She also gave me treats time to time.
Few days passed and I quickly got attached to my female human. I gave her some friendly bites and followed her around in the house. I even sprayed my feeding area a few times because I wanted to own everything at my new home. I chinned on things and left my stinky territorial droppings everywhere I went. I especially enjoyed peeing on the sofa. I also couldn’t resist wanting to hump so bad so I often chased after my human’s feet. Whenever I tried, she put it to stop and ran away. I had complete freedom at first, but she put me in a confined area at night after a few days. One day, I was let out during the day and had fun destroying a few power cords. Human got busy after that incident, putting up barriers to keep me away from some things and few areas.
2 months passed, and I eventually lost interest on humping and wanting to own everything. I also put on some weight since my human fed me well. I still chase my human a lot but I no longer bite or try to hump her feet - I just want my treat. And guess what, I’m free-range again, 24/7. Some barriers are still up but I think my human trusts me to let me be, even overnight. I also learned that my human doesn’t want me to pee on the sofa. I still get the urge sometimes but I got much better at it. I am very good at using my own litter box. I often watch TV sitting next to humans on the sofa. Sometimes, I sit next to them to sniff and watch what they eat. I’m so energetic, friendly, and entertaining to be around that my human thinks that I’m a dog in rabbit suit. I’m glad and happy that I met my new human couple. They were so patient with me and very forgiving when I was hormonal for some time. We’ve become a one happy family.
Thank you so much, foster parents, who rescued me from the street. Also thank you, rabbit rescue lady, who took me to a vet and hosted a meet and greet with my humans. I hope other lost rabbits get to find their forever home like me. My human suspects that I was a Easter gift rabbit who grew up fast and became hormonal. I don’t remember much, but she thinks that when I became difficult to deal with, I got dumped or released out of home to fend myself in the streets. My human sincerely wishes that other humans to think twice, or more before buying, gifting, and adopting pets. Living with animals can be difficult, different than expected, and troublesome than they think. Vet bills, foods, and living supplies can be expensive depending on the situations and events. Behavioral problems can be hard but definitely not impossible to overcome with some patience, willing to change, and love.
Thank you for reading my long post. Stay tuned for more Mochi posts in near future, or visit his Instagram @zoroxmochi. Feel free to dm me regarding my pet loss and adopting experiences.

Since my breeder fell through and my finances have been shaky as of recent I’ve been looking into maybe getting a rescue dog as a SD (ofc paying very very very close attention to temperament) but I’m ok petfinder and an adoption agency near me is charging $950 for what they say is a full bred standard poodle and honestly yikes 😬
If your finances are shaky, now may not be the best time to add a SD anyway. It takes a lot of money to owner-train a service dog, you want to make sure you’re prepared for the worst.

How to Get a Pet as a Vegan
1. Adopt, Don’t Shop
Adopting a pet is always an excellent idea. You can use sites like Petfinder, or go to local animal shelters near you. Outside of shelters, taking in a pet from a friend or relative that can no longer keep them is also a form of adoption. This is also possible from strangers via sites like Craigslist. (Note: People also breed animals and sell them on Craigslist. Is the “adoption fee” what someone would sell this animal for in a retail setting? Does this person have many young animals of the same breed or species? These are some signs this is a breeder.)  The benefit of this route is you can know more about the animal you’re adopting from their previous family or the shelter. Reputable shelters will also make sure the animal is in good health and up to date on any needed vaccinations as applicable.
2. Rescue Them Yourself
If you’re willing and able, the streets are absolutely full of homeless pets. Taking in a stray (or even feral) animal and helping them heal physically and emotionally can be incredibly rewarding. However, this can be more difficult, as these animals may have health or socialization problems, so this may not be for beginners. (Feral cats and dogs, as well as orphans that still need to nurse require resources that shelters just don’t have. These animals are unfortunately put to sleep. Taking in one of these animals will be directly saving that animal’s life.) If you’re more experienced though and up to the task, I promise you can forge a bond with your new companion unlike anything else.
3. Removing Invasives
There are many species of exotic animals commonly kept as pets that have become invasive species in the areas that they’ve been introduced to. These animals compete with, or consume, native species. Currently, the main method of removing them as a threat to local species is to kill them. I’m of course not advocating for someone with no experience with snakes to go out and try to catch an adult Burmese python from the everglades. Look up what animals are invasive to your area, and do research into their care to see if any of them are a good fit for you. Some examples of invasive species near me that could be kept as pets are Chinese mantises, rusty crayfish, pigeons, some species of snails, and many more. Never take in a native wild animal as a pet! Removing invasive species while at the same time preventing them from being culled is a win win.
--
As always, never adopt a pet without doing your research! Learn and prepare for the needs of your new companion, and never put yourself in a situation that’s dangerous for you or the animal. No matter which one of these routes you choose, you will be saving the life of an animal, and in the case of the second two, helping wildlife as well. As long as you aren’t paying someone to remove an animal from its native habitat, or to breed an animal into existence, you’re helping save animals.

Hey! I know you're in KC, and I am too! I'm just wondering if you've found any good exotic(rodent) rescues in / near the area? I'd like to adopt for my future pets and I'm really not seeing any rescues, googling brought me dog / cat shelters. Btw, good luck on finding a home for Ditto! Hope you're well!
I like to look on Petfinder & similar sites! I just did a quick search there and found that this shelter has some rodents & small mammals with them - http://www.hhhstopeka.org/ You could also call around to some of the shelters/rescues in the KC area and see if any of them accept animals besides dogs/cats, like HHHS. If you’re up for the potential for poor conditions & possible resulting health conditions, you could also check Craigslist.
There’s also some area FB groups for rehoming pets & such that you could check out. I joined a few so I can post about Ditto in them this weekend - Kansas City Pet Classifieds, Kansas City Adoptable Pets, and Kansas City Metro Pets.
Good luck! Also yay for KC buddies! :D And thank you. ♥♥♥

Beware of Puppy Mills
One of the biggest things you should be aware of is puppy mills. We ‘ve already mentioned it briefly above, and if this Wikipedia connection does n’t scare you, I do n’t know what will. They put profit and das kapital over the wellbeing of the animals . unfortunately, some websites ca n’t catch every single one, so they rely on users to help. Many of the websites mentioned hera provide more information about them, including the ASPCA, if you ‘re concern. You can always contact a vet for more help in this department if one of your likely fresh friends seems to look a little insalubrious ( you can even talk to vets online now ! ) .
Finding Your Next Best Pal
Keep in mind that the ASPCA emphasizes that it ‘s best to see the puppy in person and to support your local shelters whenever possible. so, hopefully, one of these top pet websites can help you locate, contact, and visit with a dog that turns out to be the correct fit for you and your class .

Dog Profiles: Dexter
The holidays always conjure up feelings of nostalgia. It's my final week in New Jersey. Between spending time with family and friends, I’ve been reflecting a lot about the last decade and how dogs have changed things. As we're about to embark on a new chapter (lol dog joke), it feels like the appropriate time to reintroduce the dogs.
Let’s start with oldest; Dexter.
Dexter is the only non-husky in the bunch. He sticks out like a sore, smelly thumb. He isn’t a bad dog, but I learned a lot about what I don’t want in a dog through owning him. I’m still not sure what he is (if someone wants to spring for a DNA test, lemme know), but I’m guessing there’s some lab or hound in there. Whatever he is, he loves eating, pissing, and being obsessively close to me.
I adopted Dexter with my college boyfriend. I knew, even then (2008), that I wanted a husky. Not a single husky rescue would even consider us and, in hindsight, I don’t blame them. On paper, we were a terrible fit for a high energy breed. We were in our early 20s, renting an apartment with barely any yard (no fence), taking classes all day, barely employed, and lacking northern breed experience. (This lead me to volunteer for Tails of the Tundra and Howling Woods Farms, but that’s a different story.) They had no way of knowing I’m a batshit dog lady.
We eventually found puppy Dexter (then “Cody”) on Petfinder and decided to apply. He was listed as an Australian Cattle Dog, which he almost certainly is not, but some of his siblings did bear the black and white freckled coat. I suspect his mom was a hussy, carrying pups from two separate dads.
His foster family agreed to let us meet him, and after talking to me, they realized I could handle the responsibility. A few days later, Dexter ate a bee and was stung in the face. Later that day, we brought him home.
Dexter was an only-dog for three solid years, but we spent many evenings at the dog park near our campus. We learned his favorite breed of dog was the pug and that he preferred peeing on things (and people) more than running around. But he ran around, too.
I started training Dexter to mush in 2010. I bought a bikejoring attachment (the kind that let him run alongside the bike at first) and an x-back harness. He learned commands on our hikes. By the time Denali entered the picture, he was able to help train her. We made a sweet little bikejoring trio.
Dexter had a few good years of mushing, to the best of his ability. He was fast and strong, but only when he wanted to be. He wasn't great in races, since he had to say hello to every dog we (tried to) pass.
Shortly after Denali, Knox joined the team and we expanded to using a dryland cart and wooden dog sled. A few years later, I brought Willow aboard. As the huskies matured and became solid sled dogs, it got more and more difficult for Dexter to keep up. He hated to be left behind and still screamed at hookup, so I kept bringing him. But after a few minutes of running, he’d slow us down dramatically. That was OK though—as long as he kept up, I didn’t mind going his pace.
In the Fall of 2016, Dex finally called it quits. He was 8-years-old at this point, which is on the young side for a sled dog to retire, but Dex isn’t really a sled dog. The team had gotten much too fast for him, and instead of trying to keep up, he pumped the brakes.
It was a sad day for me. Running a 4-dog team was such a delight, even if we were going really slow. Willow had just joined the team in early 2016 and the whole pack ran with more confidence when I had them in pairs. I wasn’t sure what to do next. (Obviously, I quickly rectified the situation when I found Blitz, but again, that’s another story.)
For the past year, Dexter has enjoyed the benefits of not having to do much of anything. He’s my only dog with any guardian instincts, so his only “work” has been to guard the van while I’m out on the trail. (He barks menacingly if anyone comes close.) Since Hubble has joined us, he also serves as a decent pup-sitter.
In the summer, Dexter will be 10-years-old. It's a pretty big milestone for us both.

ello there Ladies and Gents My name is Hoover Montgomery Templeton Aloicious Randy. Ok so it’s only Hoover but my foster family thinks I am pretty grand. I am an older gentlemen…and just like a fine wine I get better with age. I found myself without a home because my owner was ill. I am 13 years young. That’s right. I know. You wouldn’t believe it. I love people and can walk around a few dogs but at this stage in my life I really like the idea of being in a one dog household. I seem to also really bond with one family member to be my buddy over a house full so no children please. Raised enough of them in my life. I am deaf however I am super intuitive. Many times when my foster family comes to wake me up before they even have to flicker lights or stomp on ground I wake up just knowing they are nearby. I love love love going for walks. I mean really – if you want to walk everyday – I am your man. I like yards too. Really up to you. I also love treats. I mean A LOT. I love to eat. But most importantly I like to hang out with you. My paw will be on you at all times if we are on the couch. Now in bed – yes, of course I sleep in your bed – which is now mine thank you very much – I like to stretch out. Now here is my only fault which isn’t really a fault but I think I should mention this so we start off on the right paw. I like routine. I like stability (ok so who doesn’t.) and I stress out when changes come about. So I may not show well at very first…..perhaps panting and pacing and barking for you to come back if you leave the room….but can you blame me? I went from a home to a shelter to a foster and I am older and refined so I like to know my surroundings. But I quickly adjust. My dream life with you is being at your side. So if you work from home or maybe you are retired I am your man. I am very healthy for my age. I don’t even take any medication – although foster mom makes me take vitamins. I do have decreased eyesight but I switched from reading books to audio files so it’s all ok. I get around just fine. If you have never been around a deaf dog – I will work with you and foster mom on how to approach me so I don’t startle. Now if you have had a deaf dog – I’m probably your easiest one. Well that’s what my foster family says who have deaf dogs. Let’s get together and snuggle and watch a movie? This silver fox has many more miles and I think I want to see about getting into the Guinness book of world records as longest living dog. Let’s do that together!? I'm being fostered near Philadelphia and my adoption fee is $150. Please submit an adoption application on our website! http://www.snortrescue.org/index.php/adoption/adoption-application Note: All dogs in SNORT's care are fostered in private homes by dedicated volunteers. Meet the Pomeranian Chihuahua Mix puppy – Pomchi
The Pomchi is a mixed breed of Pomeranian and Chihuahua dogs. They are sweet, playful, loyal and also friendly. Pomchi dogs get close to the family members so fast as they have the affectionate mind. Similar with Pomeranian and Chihuahua dogs, Pomchi dogs are very small and they look like miniature size foxes. Their faces are similar to Chihuahua faces with small rounded heads and big eyes. They will grow up to six to ten inches tall and their size of the legs are very short. Pomchi pups have a wide variety of colors such as dark brown, white, cream, gray etc. If you have a small house space or if you are living in an apartment, raising a Pomchi is a good choice.
