It's amazing that YouTube algorithms decided to show me the massage therapist whose services I used during my last vacation.

When I saw her, two versions of the joke immediately appeared in my head:

1) She is a xeno-naturalist from T'Hasi, whose task is to analyze the pre-warp civilization of Sol 3 for suitability as intermediaries for her people, since the teachings of Surrak impose monstrous debuffs on diplomacy and social sciences; 2) She is a planted agent of Rihannsu, whose task was the initial reconnaissance of the planet of primitives, located literally on the doorstep of the Vulcans, for their further vassalization and creation of leverage and instability right near the capital of Surak's disciples… but she decided to live her best life and touch the unsophisticated creatures with impunity in exchange for their primitive analogue of an energy credit.

And now I'm thinking about something: In science fiction, if there are xenophiles (which is disappointingly rare, despite the number of works in this setting), they are always humans in relation to other races. In the case where aliens are looking for a romantic partner among humans, it is either a "Twi'lek case" (when the entire race is made up of human women covered in paint, or it is a civilization of pansexual hedonists with no rules of decency), or a functional relationship (like Garrus loves Shepard precisely because she is Shepard, and not an exotic, soft, warm-blooded babe). The only example of a xenophile among aliens in relation to humans that I can think of is Admiral ZEX from Star Control II. Do you know any other examples of alien guys who have a thing for humans?

Now I'm genuinely curious on this comment on people crushing on a stinky rat, because I am also guilty of this Tarantulas from beast wars, Black Clover's Jack the ripper and Ganondorf from the legend of zelda come to mind (Ganondorf was a rat in ocarina of time, which was the first Zelda game I played)

In addition to that I have gotten requests for characters from Madness Combat and been asked if I would write for countryhumans in the past and I am just so fascinated by what draws a person to a character that looks like dog shit. It is fascinating and I love it.

Like, normies might scoff at someone who sees beast wars tarantulas and thinks “hot” (the correct answer) but I need to study the people out there who want to fuck Bluey’s dad. I’m obsessed.

And just so you guys can mock me too; it didn’t last long but one of the fictional men I was fascinated with is Admiral Zex from Star Control II. I never even played the game. He looks like if vomit was anthropomorphized.

A hat-wearing shark appears!

The thing I was talking about in the last post? It was a gift for @zarla-s and I now have confirmation that the giftee has received it, so I can post photos!

It's a hat! Don't mind the shark, I didn’t make it, but I needed somebody to model the hat!

Here’s a front-on view, so that you can admire all the cross-stitch work! I designed the cross-stitch pattern for the black mesa circle, the umbrella, Admiral ZEX and Zarfox, everything else comes directly from the pixel art it is referencing.

You can see the little Spathi ship hanging out at the back, here! I was going to make it a badge as well, but then I decided that it would be nicer to keep those hypothetical Spathi safe by making sure they can’t fall off. (characters from Star Control 2, in case you’re wondering. Cool game, try it.)

Close-up of ZEX and Zarfox, why not. You can also see some of my itty bitty stitching on the hat itself – I’m pretty proud of that.

Here’s the other side! The candy-cane is from Bubble Bobble, by the way, and I spent ages comparing all the different versions and spin-offs that exist of that game (I’m most familiar with Bubble Bobble Nostalgie, myself) and it turns out that the appearance and function of the candy-cane is surprisingly consistent across all the different versions that have existed! Unlike the sand-timer which was my original idea, but which doesn’t even exist in the original! (In ‘nostalgie it makes it so that the white ghost never appears on that level, which is handy.) But the candy-cane makes big food appear, and is one of my favourite items, so I went with that.

This giant badge on top is the decoder ring from Space Quest 3, and I did not expect it to turn out so big! I counted the pixels, and thought ‘oh, well it’s a bit taller than most, and a bit wider than most – I guess I can’t use it on the band of the hat then, it’ll need to be a badge, which isn’t a problem since it would work best with a blue background anyway’. What I forgot is that when you double the side lengths of a shape, you quadruple its area. Oops. That thing is enormous, seriously.

These two badges here probably took me the longest out of everything. Not as long as making the whole hat, probably, but I’m pretty sure they took longer even than the decoder ring. They come from the sprite of Admiral ZEX’s uniform, and so many pixels are a slightly different shade of colour to similar pixels elsewhere! I spent a lot of time figuring out which pixels to count as the same colour, and which to keep distinct, and then which of the thread colours I had best suited which pixels. And I ended up keeping lots of the shade differences, so there was a lot of tying off one thread and starting up a new one, just a tad lighter/darker. But I’m very pleased with how they turned out in the end, woo!
