Why Not Me?

At last: the LQR raises LJY fic from my WIP Wednesdays has a name and proper chapters. My baby has been AO3 legitimized lol (the title is a link to it on AO3).

This whole idea, by the way, was sparked by this post by @korpikorppi about how Lan Qiren and Lan Jingyi seem to be really comfortable/familiar with each other during the Second Siege of the Burial Mounds, so I took that and ran with it while also shamelessly committing to my “Jingyi’s un-Lan-like behavior is actually at least partially because of ye olde ADHD because I say so” agenda.

Jingyi stumbles to a guilty halt. Lan-xiansheng hadn’t called him by name, but he didn’t have to for Jingyi to know he’s the one being addressed. After all, the other children are all behaving exactly as expected as they walk from their classroom to the dining hall -- only Jingyi can’t resist bouncing on the balls of his feet and swinging his arms as he walks. They just had to sit for so long today! His limbs are tingly and restless and he needs to get the feeling out before he has to sit and be quiet for lunch, but he’s not allowed to wander somewhere more secluded to do it.

Which just means that he’ll get in trouble for it.

Again.

He decides to save Lan-xiansheng the trouble of trying to recall his name. Instead, he simply ducks his head and approaches him much more sedately. Once in front of one of the three most intimidating people in the Cloud Recesses, Jingyi dips into a bow and keeps his head down, eyes lowered.

“The way you were walking --“

“Is unacceptable,” Jingyi interrupts before he can stop himself and he winces, though he manages not to break his bow to clap his hands over his mouth. It won’t turn back time to 5 seconds ago before he’d interrupted anyway, so there’s no point.

“Do not interrupt,” Lan-xiansheng reprimands as expected, though he doesn’t sound any sterner than when he’d begun. Jingyi nods and dips a little lower in his bow briefly. He really doesn’t mean to be bad, but no matter what he says it always ends up the same. There’s no use trying to defend himself anymore.

“Yes, Lan-xiansheng.”

“Do not cause further disruptions.”

Jingyi hesitates but nods again. At least he’s not getting a punishment this time -- his last one had been for a few different things and it had taken forever to get all the copying and handstand-ing out of the way. He straightens up again in time to see Lan-xiansheng wave him away and he turns quickly, eager to go get something to eat -- and immediately smashes face-first into someone’s knees.

“Ow!” he yelps and rubs ruefully at his nose, his face blanching when he catches sight of the boy accompanying whoever he’d run into. It’s Lan Yuan, which means --

“Ha..Hanguang-Jun,” Jingyi barely manages to stammer. Hanguang-Jun came out of seclusion a few years ago now, but he still barely ever interacts with the rest of the Sect (at least as far as Jingyi can tell). His son is nice, but Jingyi feels ugly things that he know he shouldn’t whenever he sees the boy, and so it’s with the twin guilt of having run into Hanguang-Jun and for not liking Lan Yuan, Hanguang-Jun’s pride and joy, that Jingyi hurries to bow again.

“Move carefully,” Hanguang-Jun instructs, his voice deep and slow. Jingyi nods in a rush and is finally allowed to make his escape from what is now two of the three most intimidating people in Cloud Recesses.

Jingyi walks slowly to the dining hall, scuffing his heels all the way. He knows that it’s not fair of him to not like Lan Yuan. And an even tinier, even secreter part of him doesn’t like Hanguang-Jun either. Or Lan-xiansheng. Or Zewu-Jun. He respects them, of course he respects them! And he knows he shouldn’t feel this way, which is why he hasn’t said a word of it to anyone. But any run-in with any of them always puts a sour taste in his mouth.

Jingyi sits down with his rice and starts eating glum little bites. He usually can’t get the food in his mouth fast enough, cramming his cheeks full of rice and vegetables until it feels like they’ll split open. He’s always reprimanded for it, though never actually punished since he never eats more than the proscribed amount. Today he eats like he’s supposed to, and he pouts down at his rice feeling not very like himself at all.

The thing is, Jingyi knows that he’s related to them. He’s a Lan too - a clan one, with the cloud ribbon and everything - but he doesn’t get to have a family. When he was little, he used to cry for his parents and the aunties in the children’s house would tell him that they’ll be back soon, just sleep Yi-er, your family will come back for you.

Only they didn’t, because the aunties said one day that they were actually gone forever in the war that took a lot of kids’ parents. And Jingyi had cried and cried, wanting them so badly it hurt all the way down to his fingertips and his toes. The aunties would try to comfort him, but then they left and new aunties came in, and they didn’t know him at all and he just became another kid in the house.

And then the other kids started leaving. The sect was getting bigger again, and people were able to take in kids that weren’t theirs and give them a home and a new family, but no one ever came for Jingyi. And then one day he heard the aunties chatting amongst themselves that Hanguang-Jun had left the Cloud Recesses completely and come back with a son. He claimed the boy for his own, but the aunties thought with the way the boy was so sick that he’d been a war orphan that Hanguang-Jun wanted. Well Jingyi was a war orphan too, but Hanguang-Jun hadn’t wanted him. He’d gone all the way to Somewhere Else to find a son he wanted more.

It just doesn’t feel fair sometimes to be a Lan but not a Lan. He’s not the only kid in the children’s home, of course, but the others are all children who were sent here to live by their parents so they can become disciples. Sometimes their parents are even allowed to come and see them, and they can send letters every season. Sometimes Jingyi wonders if he’s maybe the loneliest kid in all of Cloud Recesses. Maybe the whole world.

Jingyi finishes his first bowl of rice and doesn’t reach for a second, his belly too knotted up and full of his sad mood to eat any more.

Every time he sees them he’s reminded that they don’t want him. They have to know he exists, even if they don’t know his name - he wears the ribbon, after all, and he’s in all the right classes for his age. Don’t they care? And Lan Yuan never leaves Hanguang-Jun’s side, which means he gets to be around his dad all the time! Jingyi wants that! He wants someone who will hug him and let him run around the house and play with him and take care of him - just him!

He’s never allowed to do that in the children’s home. The aunties tut over him and ask him what they should do with him and they give him extra chores to keep him out from under their feet while they take care of the others. They tell him he’s a lot to handle and he needs to be better behaved if he wants to be allowed to become a cultivator. Jingyi wonders sometimes if that’s why his family doesn’t want to take him away from the children’s home -- he’s too much, and at least there he’s someone else’s problem.

Jingyi’s mood follows him for the rest of the week like a big cloud over his head that he can’t get rid of. It wouldn’t be so bad if he didn’t have to see Hanguang-Jun and Zewu-Jun all over the place, but for some reason he sees at least one of them every day as he walks to and from class or his chores or the dining hall. Every time he sees them he has a foolish little flash of hope that they’re out and about looking for him, but they never are and each time it feels like a fresh rejection.

He skips class.

He skips class all week long the next week to go hide in the woods, near enough to hear the bells and the occasional hushed chatter of disciples on the other side of the trees but far enough away that no one can find him perching in branches or sitting on soft patches of moss.

It takes ten whole days for someone to find him and tell him he’s in trouble and to report to Lan-xiansheng. Even though he knows it’s to be punished, it almost feels like a reward. If they won’t notice him on their own, it seems he can make them notice him if he acts badly enough. He doesn’t want to be bad, and actually he wasn’t even trying to be, but if doing things to get in trouble will get him noticed then maybe it’s worth it.

“Your teacher informed me you have not been attending class,” Lan-xiansheng remarks once Jingyi has knelt in front of him across a table stacked with essays from the older classes. Jingyi dares a glance up at his stern gaze and immediately falters, dropping his eyes back down to stare at his fists on his knees instead as he shakes his head. “Where have you been instead?”

“The woods,” Jingyi manages to reply, still addressing his own lap. “There’s a nice clearing off the path to the sword grounds.”

“What makes this clearing better than attending your classes?”

Jingyi shuffles uncomfortably and immediately reprimands himself for fidgeting, the voice in his head a strange mixture of the sternest auntie and his teacher.

“I don’t know.” It comes out easily, almost desperately, and Jingyi can’t decide if it’s a lie or not. He doesn’t know why he didn’t want to go to class, but the thought of going made him sadder than the thought of sitting by himself in the woods so he’d just…done that instead. But he already knows from experience that that isn’t the sort of explanation anyone wants to hear when they ask things like this, so “I don’t know” is safer. They can’t be mad at him for something he can’t explain, right?

“Perhaps you will think of the reason while you do handstands until the evening meal.”

Dinner?! It’s only just after breakfast now! Jingyi’s head snaps up and a protest forms on the tip of his tongue; he quickly bites it back along with the sudden frustrated burning in his eyes to nod instead.

“Yes Lan-xiansheng,” Jingyi replies with effort. He was wrong -- this hurts worse than being ignored. Not worth it at all.

And yet he can’t seem to stop. He serves his punishment and lasts a few days before he acts out again and is once again delivered to Lan-xiansheng for punishment. Sometimes he does chores around Cloud Recesses, sometimes he does handstands, sometimes he copies, sometimes he copies while doing handstands -- it all makes him feel about as big as an ant getting poked with a stick, but he can’t help it.

It goes on for months, and Jingyi develops a reputation for being a troublemaker. Other children avoid him, adults watch him closely waiting for him to slip up, and he’s more miserable than he’s ever been.

Today he’s meant to be fetching water for his chores. The Cloud Recesses has running water, but Lan-xiansheng is running out of new ways to punish him so Jingyi is fetching water. He decides to go all the way up into the back hill for it, just because, and stumbles upon a secret place that’s way better than his old clearing in the woods. It looks about the same as that one, except this one is full of rabbits!

Jingyi drops his buckets and hurries into the clearing with a gasp, something happy lighting up in his chest for the first time in a long time to see the fluffy little things gamboling about in the grass. That little spark fans itself quickly into a desire to join them so intense he can’t possibly keep it under control, and so without a second thought he begins jumping and running around with them, giving chase and laughing when they all scatter away. He lunges for them and tries to catch them, wanting desperately to find out what they feel like.

He can’t help but scream in sudden fear when he’s yanked to a stop by a hand in his collar. He looks up and feels the happiness in his chest burst like a soap bubble as he finds himself staring up at a glaring Hanguang-Jun.

“Ah…” he tries to start, but terror has closed his throat.

“Do not chase them,” Hanguang-Jun intones, his voice cold and inflectionless. It somehow feels just as bad as when people are angry with him. “You will hurt them.”

Jingyi struggles against Hanguang-Jun’s grip with a sudden burst of anger and the fear closing up his throat turns into a lump that he can’t swallow away and a burning in his eyes. He gulps down big, shaking breaths and scrubs at his eyes while Hanguang-Jun releases him without another word. He should leave, he knows he should, but it’s not fair! He just wanted to play and there’s yet another rule! Another ‘do not’ that can be used to make him bad!

“I didn’t mean to hurt them!” Jingyi protests, finally finding his voice again. He glares at Hanguang-Jun’s feet through the warbling of his tears and scrubs at his eyes again. “I wanted to play! I’m s’posed to be doing another --“ he hiccups -- “another punishment for being bad but I found them and wanted to play instead! I’m sorry Hanguang-Jun, I don’t want to be bad but - but - but -“

Jingyi trails off into sobbing as he curls up in a little ball on the ground. Why couldn’t he have been born a bunny? Bunnies don’t have rules, bunnies can be soft and fluffy and have a million-billion siblings and be safe in meadows. They can run and hop around and no one will tell them they have too much energy, that their behavior is inappropriate, that he’ll never be allowed to become a proper disciple if he doesn’t learn to control himself and not lose face for the Sect.

That must be why none of his family want him -- embarrassment. He’s not like the rest of the Lans, even Lan Yuan who’s his age and a war orphan too is quiet and nice and all the right things that the teachers want to see. Jingyi’s just a nuisance.

Jingyi isn’t sure how long he cries, but it feels like he’ll never be able to stop. At some point through his heartache he hears Hanguang-Jun greet a new set of footfalls with a quiet, “Shufu,” and Jingyi tries to pull himself together. He doesn’t want to cry in front of Lan-xiansheng too, not when yelling and crying in front of Hanguang-Jun is bad enough. He uncurls with an effort and stands up to offer a bow to Hanguang-Jun and then to Lan-xiansheng at the entrance to the little meadow.

“I’m sorry,” he says thickly. “I didn’t carry the water.” Jingyi leaves a wide berth between himself and Lan-xiansheng as he returns to his discarded buckets and picks them up, one in each hand. They already feel as if they weigh a thousand pounds, exhaustion and sadness dragging at his limbs before the buckets are even filled.

He’s nearly to the path when Hanguang-Jun calls for him. “Jingyi. Come back.”

2. Hi!! I cant remember if I already sent this or just thought really hard about it 😪 Im looking for a modern AU fic where WWX is dx'd ADHD and he and LWJ slowly start a relationship. The scene I remember most clearly is there being fireworks and it send LWJ into a meltdown. Ether just before or after the meltdown he found out LXC and LQR have been trying to get him diagnosed with Autism.

Xiao Xingchen is an adult psych who specalizes in neurodivergence iirc, and WWX helps make LWJ feel more okay w possibly being neurodiverse by talking about his experience w ADHD and Xiao Xingchen.

4. This for fic finder. Its an old fic. Modern au focused on junior quartet. I dont know if the fic is several fic or in one fic. Junior quartet is in a club where they make a magazine (sorry i forgot the word both in my language and in english). They have an access to a school forum. LJY found an old forum talking about wangxian. Like the people in that forum failed to make wangxian happen in the past. If i remember correctly, they tried to matchmake wangxian. They ask LWJ to accompany them to yunmeng. In yunmeng, there are big festival happened there and they meet the jiang family in second floor of the restaurant to watch the festival from there. I think the jiangs is a respectable family that many people know them. So long story short, they manage to matchmake wangxian. I dont know if LJY release the news to that old forum or someone did. 11. hi, i'm looking for a fic which i found on twitter but im sure links to AO3 — basically everyone in the universe is some sort of animal (wwx is a fox, lwj is a dragon?) and they're classified by their mating cycles (whether they mate for life or seasonally). wwx and lwj gets engaged but lwj calls it off as wwx is a fox and therefore mates seasonally vs his for-life situation. wwx gets sad about it and then they find out wwx actually can mate for life! i used to find it easily before but for some reason no matter what i search, it just won't come up and i don't think i was logged into ao3 at the time i read it either. hope someone remembers it as well, thanks!

12. Hi I’m trying to find a fic where jiang Cheng is being forced to get married/find an heir. I remember that a member of YunmengJiang approached him with a list of members of the sect that would leave if he didn’t get an heir. I think it was mentioned that people were okay with him not having getting married since they assumed Jin Ling would inherit and Jin Guangyao would have another child but once his crimes were revealed they started to pressure him.

15. Dear FicFinder Team, here I am again with only vibes and one scene. It was a WIP CQL post-canon fic, set during WWX's wanderings. At some point he exorcises a ghost in a tower (not one of the watchtower fics tho) and the last scene was WWX on his way back, kneeling in the grass to make offerings to his shijie and finally letting himself cry about her death. 21. Hello there, I’m not sure if this is a fic finder or an in the mood for, because I’m looking for a fic and more like that.

So you know how theres this TikTok Sound of someone called Nick who asks for the WLAN Password and its I Love You Nick and Nick is in a lot of denial about being lovers even though their anniversary is coming up?

I found a fic that was basically WY and LZ in a relationship, and WY/LZ (but more likely WY) didn’t realise that they were anything more than friends, and it was very funny.

More comedic than anything else. But I cannot for the life of me find it, and everytime I try and search for it, only the sad version shows up.

I have just now realized that along with WWX, NHS, and LJY, I headcanon JGY as also having ADHD, more of the hyperactive type than inattentive. I think that’s part of what makes him move at such a breakneck pace without fully just stopping and doing some introspection. I think it’s part of what makes him so good at problem solving--having a highly associative brain that can make split second connections is good at being maneuverable. But we also see him having trouble with big goal changes, bullheadedly sticking to The Plan, even if it’s not necessarily what needs to happen anymore. (Really, JGY? Your Father will love you if you kill this one more person? You’ll finally get that stability you crave? Really, if you just keep filling Guanyin Temple up with hostages, your escape to Japan will still work? Maybe it’s time to cut your losses, bud.)

The Emotional Dysregulation (’Son of a Whore’ button, anyone?) and Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria--that paired with trauma and a, uh, flexible view on personal morality makes his reaction to all the ridicule he receives for his birth station, shall we say, intense. (Also translating: ‘How could you do that? I’m upset!’ = ‘I actively want you to die and hate you with every fiber of my being’). Probably learned very early that something was Different™ about him and learned to watch how other people did things and mirror. I could very easily see him as the type of child who sits and watches other people and actively learns The Rules that everyone else seems to know and so, now, can wield them deftly and very purposefully in social situations to his advantage.  (All his skills at handling people more powerful than him could have very easily been learned at the brothel; making yourself seem nonthreatening and even helpless, people are inherently selfish, don’t go headfirst against people stronger than you because you’ll lose, show people what they want to see, make yourself valuable, s m i l e :) ).

Day 23: Letter

Hey Sizhui, how are you? How's travelling the Ghost General? Do you have cool stories about your family –

Lan Jingyi sighed and scratched out the beginnings of his letter. Lan Sizhui had been gone for almost five months, and had finally written a letter that included an address, and the information that he and Wen Ning would be staying in this town for the winter, since the mountain paths they had been travelling would be almost impossible to walk through once the snows hit. It meant that Jingyi could, and should, and would write him often, to make up for all the lost time and the time that would be lost again once the spring thaws came.

The problem was, he had no idea what to write.

He twirled his brush a little between his fingers, trying for the same smooth casualness that Senior Wei always managed to exude when he did it, and mostly wound up spattering a few drops of ink over his desk. Huffing out a sigh, he wiped them up quickly before they could stain and stared at the crumpled, messy paper in front of him. Even if he did figure out what to write, how to contain all the emotions and thoughts and stories swirling behind his ribcage, he'd have to rewrite it on fresh paper anyway. He could already hear Lan Qiren lecturing him on wasting supplies by not thinking before putting brush to paper, and resolved to at least write drafts until the paper was too covered to take another word.

To Lan Sizhui

This disciple hopes that your travels are going well, and that you have learned many new things –

Too formal, the kind of stilted letter he would write to an acquaintance that he barely knew.

Sizhui, I miss you so much sometimes, like an ache, like falling into freezing water, like –

He scowled at the innocent paper, slashing through the words as if it was their fault he was struggling. He usually couldn't stop talking, and he had the upper body strength from punishment handstands to prove it. And besides that, Sizhui had always been the easiest person to talk to, giggling together in the night as late as they dared, heads bent together over schoolwork in the library, sprawled out in the meadow with the rabbits napping on their chests. But suddenly, nothing he could think of sounded right. None of it sounded like him, and none of it seemed to encapsulate what he was thinking. He had certainly read enough romantic novels to know how poetic and touching this kind of letter should be – even if he still couldn't quite think words like confession and courting to himself about it – but somewhere on the way from his head to his hand, the words got muddled and confused and turned flat.

He thought, a little regretfully as he ground more ink, that he should be used to things getting muddled on their way from his thoughts to his actions by now. At least when it came to writing reports and essays, he'd gotten used to the structure of them enough to fake it. And Sizhui was always there to read over his work and correct it before he submitted it, which certainly wasn't an option this time.

He propped his chin on his hand, staring vaguely into the middle distance. Maybe he should follow Hanguang-Jun's example and compose a song to show how he felt, craft something sweeping and powerful and ringing with love and harbor it in his heart until he could play it for its subject.

Then again, he didn't want to tempt fate and lose Sizhui for years and years before he could share the song.

His fingers tapped out a steady rhythm on the table as he thought, running through the people he could ask for advice. The list was depressingly small, unfortunately. He could write to Ouyang Zizhen, but that would undoubtably result in more poetry. Jin Ling would be more pragmatic, but probably too aggressive. Senior Wei would probably have good advice, but he was on his own travels. Briefly, he considered asking Hanguang-Jun, then immediately dismissed the thought. He wasn't sure which concept was more terrifying: asking the Hanguang-Jun for romantic advice about a classmate, or asking Sizhui's father for tips on how to woo him. He'd rather face a waterborne abyss all on his own.

If this was a novel, he wouldn't even bother with writing a letter. He'd fly off to the tiny town Sizhui had mentioned, sail into his room at the inn and proclaim his love with some beautiful poem – maybe something famous and timeless, maybe he'd make something up on the spot in an eruption of feeling – and Sizhui would swoon into his arms and they'd kiss and fall into the bed and –

Well, admittedly the novels he'd bought were very vague on the details of what happened at that point, but Jingyi had a pretty decent inkling and a really good imagination and he was sure they could figure it out.

The real problem was that Sizhui wasn't the kind to swoon at romantic declarations (which was part of the reason Jingyi liked him so much – loved him, he let himself think, feeling the thrill of it), and he couldn't help but think that Sizhui would, in fact, laugh at an impromptu poetry recital, especially coming from Jingyi of all people. Not meanly, not in an insulting way, but just because of course it would be a joke, it had to be a joke. And if he didn't think it was a joke, he'd probably just be gentle and kind and explain that he didn't feel that way back but they would still be friends, and Jingyi was pretty sure that if Sizhui gave him the soft smile and soothing shoulder touch he gave to scared villagers, he would shrivel up and die and blow away in the wind.

If this was a novel, he'd skip ahead to the end to see the happy ending.

Sizhui,

I hope you're finding what you're looking for, but you know how bad I am at waiting for things, and I have so many things to tell you when you come home. You'd better write me all the time while you're stuck inside for the winter.

And I don’t even mean in just modern stuff (knitting has always been a gender neutral thing okay anyone can have a kid and when y’all got wool but no Walmart it’s make clothes or have nakie babies die in the winter) I mean WWX who’s never knit before the burial mounds and suddenly has a toddler on his hip and twitchy fingers. I like to imagine that when Wen Qing was trying to calm him down from deciding to become Satan’s whore in his cave, she’d shove him outside in the general direction of Granny and some of the other older uncles and aunties and say ‘hey, A-Yuan needs a new pair of socks, ask Granny, she knows his stitch count’ or ‘*insert random person in BM here* needs a new shawl/sweater/scarf/hat/anything can you plz cast on for granny she keeps forgetting the count halfway through and making it way too big’ and WWX just gets sucked in immediately. Perfect vision, twitchy fingers, a love of making things, the realization that you can do colourwork talisman sigals directly into the fiber itself AND it’ll be super pretty, a reason to fuss over people around him, sitting still long enough for A-Yuan to get a full nap in his lap, the fact that his future husband is breeding RABBITS which if you get them with long fur they can be spun into yarn, why are none of you writing this lil ADHD mess sitting in a knitting circle and gossiping like an old biddie with the aunties and uncles. Give him knitting needles.

On that note: imagine WWX who still doesn’t know that Lan Sizhui is his son, who’s sitting in Cloud Recesses, waiting for the discussion conference in Koi Tower, who’s bored out of his mind, and one day Lan Wangji comes back with a basket of yarn and knitting needles, so WWX starts busting out socks (easy, quicker than sweaters or scarves, nice and tidy, can be worn immediately) and first he’s got a pair for LWJ (who only cries a little promise) and then a pair for LSZ and LJY who are delighted with presents from nice crazy man, but then LSZ is sitting there just looking at one of the sigals WWX had worked into the fiber, a nice contrasting pale white to the dark brown of the socks, and it’s just a nice little sigal for safety and happiness and he just. Starts. Tearing up. Right in LWJ’s living room. And LJY is confused (he got the sigals for protection from spirits and wisdom lollll) and LWJ just sorta pulls him into his arms and pets his hair, and WWX hasn’t quite got it yet, but he’s watching LWJ pet LSZ’s hair (which means touching his forehead ribbon as well) and he knows there’s... something there... maybe the boy is LWJ’s family...

But LSZ looks confused and unsure of himself like he can’t figure out why he’s crying and he doesn’t know why he knows why these sigals are getting to him and he just sorta chokes out the one thing that this confusing memory is giving him as a clue-

Yess that one is so interesting! I've also seen many posts about that and I really want to say I'm not an expert at all and also less involved in the Tumblr circles about this, so take this with a grain of salt.

But there are so many recognisable characteristics that could be interpreted that way:

Minimises eye contact

Avoids physical contact where possible

Withdrawn and quiet

Emotionally a little underdeveloped? Doesn't easily make social connections

And one to discuss: misses social cues

We can trust LJY to butt in and speak his mind regardless of whether Jin Ling is being a bitch or if it's a sect leader (I love him), see "okay I'll be quieter." *raises his voice* "anyways sect leader yao is a biTCH"

In which case yes there's definitely that impulsive behaviour there

But Jingyi isn't the only one who does this. At Carp Tower, when the sects discuss how Wei Wuxian has taken the Wen prisoners to the Burial Mounds, any kind of defense in his regard is ruthlessly shot down (see Mian Mian) and Jin Guangshan is bringing all his weight to the table to make his point. You don't just talk back at him, and he knows this well enough to spew bullshit on hearing Wei Wuxian say he disrespects Jiang Cheng as a leader. And yet:

Suddenly, an indifferent voice spoke up, “No.”

Jin GuangShan was in the middle of his fabrication. Hearing this, he paused in surprise, turning along with the crowd to see who it was.

Lan WangJi sat with his back straight, speaking in a tone of absolute tranquility, “I did not hear Wei Ying say this. I did not hear him express the slightest disrespect towards Sect Leader Jiang either.”

Lan WangJi rarely spoke when he was outside. Even when they debated cultivation techniques during Discussion Conferences, he only answered when others questioned or challenged him. - GDC chapter 73

Because of the whole Mian Mian situation, it's clear this is a risky approach: not just to defend Wei Wuxian so staunchly, but also to do it in a way that embarrasses the Chief Cultivator. Jin Guangyao has to come to the rescue to save his father from that blunder.

I don't think LWJ particularly cares, but it's easy to argue he also doesn't really consider it. Somehow this struck me more in the novel, but I don't remember the instances!

(i have adhd so this is based off that) ljy has adhd and like. he constantly feels like he's behind all the other juniors. he knows he's not stupid, but it's hard for him to sit down and pay attention, get his thoughts in order like everyone else. he's chatty, distractible, fidgety, and he gets emotional very easily, and it constantly makes him feel like a bad lan disciple. he can't be still and silent like the rest of them without a ton of effort, and it leaves him burned out and exhausted. 1/2

it’s not like lan jingyi wants to be the most un-lan lan ever, but no matter how hard he tries it always feels like he’ll never match up to everyone else. he’s basically resigned himself to being a disappointment. it’s really, really hard having no words and no way to explain why you’re struggling with things everyone else seems to be able to do with ease. 2/2

1.SongXiao: Yeah. I love them so much. That moment in CQL when XXC smiled and said Zichen, I was sold. And I was head over heels for them. I love them so much. I want them to be reincarnated and just happy forever. Adopt A-qing. Live a happy life. Xue Yang can suffer the lack of candy forever. 

2.XiYao: Here’s the thing. This is a painful ship. More painful than SongXiao because there isn’t really love there. There is so much betrayal and hurt. But I love the what ifs. Because if you watch CQL, LXC was so gentle and soft with MY at the beginning. That first moment of contact they were both smitten, IMO. And I can’t give up on that potential. I want it to work and I want them happy. So I love the IDEA of a GOOD HEALTHY XiYao. Where LXC can help Meng Yao’s insecurities and Meng Yao learns to like himself and be honest. It would be so sweet. I think it’s a great dynamic to explore in canonverse too. Painful but great. 

3. JinLing/Lan Jingyi:  This is the fluffy happy ship of mine. They bicker. They argue. LSZ is their match maker. They care about each other. LJY is a cat. JL is a pupper. I dunno, i’m just soft for this ship. I think Lan Jingyi is fairly sure of who he is and it makes him stable. But he’s also so sweet and fun and kind and funny and snarky. I stan LJY, ok?  And Jin Ling needs that in his life. 

Last Song: I am OBSESSED with Mao Buyi’s 水乡 right now.  The imagery is just stunning. And it makes me think of the prettiest places in China I’ve been to. So soft and sweet. It does the classic chinese poetry thing of painting a picture and then interweaves feelings into a picture. And the picture painted is a quaint chinese town with… oh. Let me just pull up some lyrics and translate it. Because I can’t really explain the feelings until i start translate it. This is a ROUGH TRANSLATION. Oh god. But it gives you the idea…

So like, it was a Canon divergent fic where wwx submitted himself to the clans and was ordered to be cleansed of resentful energy in order to... prove he wasn't corrupted? Something like that? For the Wens? And it was ritual dual cultivation. He was sent blindfolded to a room so he couldn't tell who it would be (it was lwj, of course.) Wwx knew it wouldn't exactly work cuz he didn't have a core, but he did it anyway.

There was a second.... part? Chapter? The was from Lwj's pov of after, where he finds out about the core, then JC? A Jiang disciple? Shows up to tell them to get their asses to the conference hall because JGS is being JGS and this whole thing was mostly just a distraction

LQR & LJY [Another double length post 😊]

[Beginning]

“You do still have lessons, because you must continue to learn to cultivate. However, most of your lessons will be with me from now on, and I will only be teaching you. It will not be the sorts of classes you are accustomed to. I will give you problems to solve, questions to answer, things to memorize like you do now in your group lessons, but we will do these things while I work and you assist me. You will not be asked to sit still and be quiet all day long, you will be allowed to move as much as you’d like, and to ask me any questions that come to your mind because you need not worry about interrupting others.”

Jingyi blinks at that. There’s no way anyone is allowed to learn like that. That’s impossible. Plus there’s no way Lan-xiansheng understands just how many questions Jingyi has every day, so many of which go unanswered and how many more go unasked in the first place. He wouldn’t be offering this if he knew the truth, which means that Jingyi must have deceived him in some way. He feels panic clutch at his chest at the thought but he does his best to hide it; it’s everything he’s ever wanted since he was old enough to realize his parents weren’t coming back for him, but he’s dismayed to realize that getting it all at once actually sort of…scares him.

“Yes Lan-xiansheng,” he agrees anyway because that seems like the safest thing to do, and it’s not like he doesn’t want all of this. He just doesn’t understand why he’s suddenly being given it, or how permanent (or not) all of it is. It doesn’t seem like something he should be allowed to have, and as soon as someone realizes as much they’ll take it all away again. That’s what happens to things that are too good to be true - they don’t last. He doesn’t get to keep them.

He’s warring with himself between doing everything he can to ruin this now before he gets used to it versus wanting to cling onto it for as long as possible so he can enjoy it before it all crumbles out from under his feet. Unfortunately his instinct for self-preservation has always needed some work so after a long pause he blurts out, “Lan-xiansheng, why aren’t you punishing me? Is it..I mean do I have to wait until later for Hanguang-Jun to tell someone else everything I did so they can do it instead of you? Can we do it now instead since you already know what I did?”

“You want to be punished?” Lan-xiansheng asks and if Jingyi didn’t know any better he’d think he sounds surprised. “For what?”

Jingyi shifts a little bit, absolutely sure that this is a trap but equally sure that he’s going to blunder right into it like he always does. The aunties do this to him all the time, trick him into admitting to things that even other children do but don’t get caught and punished for, and he hates it but he’s never figured out how not to do it. He just talks and ends up admitting to everything without even trying, and it scares him sometimes, like just opening his mouth is enough to get him into trouble.

“I was disrespectful to you,” he starts with a sinking heart. “I ran away from the aunties. I broke curfew. I broke into a house. I stole food. I made Hanguang-Jun break curfew to take me home. I know that Hanguang-Jun said last night that I’m not in trouble but that’s not right! It’s..Hanguang-Jun doesn’t lie! He doesn’t ever break rules which means he doesn’t lie, but how can what he said be true? How can I have broken so many rules and not be in trouble when I’m always in trouble?”

“Hanguang-Jun breaks rules.”

Jingyi’s racing mind screeches to a halt and he stops twisting his hands together in his lap to blink at Lan-xiansheng, uncomprehending.

“What?”

“Hanguang-Jun breaks rules. As does Zewu-Jun, and as do I. No one in this Sect is perfect. It is impossible to follow every single rule perfectly at all times, and it is not expected that anyone will do so.”

Jingyi blinks a few times as he tries to make that…make sense. That can’t possibly be right. Why have all those rules then if they’re not all supposed to be obeyed all the time? Why punish people for breaking them if it’s expected? Does that mean Hanguang-Jun has been punished? Lan-xiansheng?!

“Jingyi, look at me.”

Jingyi looks up sharply from blinking down unseeingly at the floorboards to meet Lan-xiansheng’s intense stare.

“The reason you are not in trouble for your actions yesterday is because you were in distress, and even though I am sure that you were aware of every rule you broke as you broke them, you still behaved that way because you were afraid and upset. I do not believe you did any of those things because you were gladly defying the rules, but rather because you saw no other option that you could bear.”

Jingyi blinks furiously again at that and wonders for a frantic moment if he isn’t actually still asleep and dreaming this entire conversation.

“If I had to guess I would also think that your behavior for the past months has been for similar reasons. You have told myself and Hanguang-Jun that you disrupt class because you do not understand the material and find sitting still to be unbearable no matter how much you try. In that case, being punished later for causing a disruption is a consequence that is not as upsetting in the moment as the pain of sitting still and quiet is, and so it is the only acceptable alternative.

“You are not the first naturally loud person to step foot in Cloud Recesses, nor will you be the last. It is such a consistent issue despite how much you dislike and fear punishment that I can only conclude that it is something you have little control over at the moment, and that no one is helping you attempt to find that control. If that is the case, it means that it is not your fault but the fault of those who should be teaching you and have not been.

“I will not punish you any further for these behaviors unless I see that you take delight in breaking these rules, rather than feeling compelled to do so because the way your mind works is incompatible with the standard way we teach the other disciples.”

It really does all sound far too good to be true.

Because that’s it. That’s it exactly. The only thing missing is how good it feels to get attention - any attention - instead of being ignored and discarded, but Jingyi doesn’t feel a need to share that reason; it’s too embarrassing. It’s enough that Lan-xiansheng seems to understand, somehow, what it’s like in his head. He doesn’t want to break the rules, he doesn’t want to be bad, but he can’t seem to help himself when the alternative means doing things that make him feel like he’s going to crawl out of his skin if he doesn’t fix the problem immediately. Only fixing the problem means moving, wiggling, asking the questions burning in his mouth. All things that no one wants him to do.

“I can see on your face that I am correct.”

“Yes, Lan-xiansheng,” he manages and scrubs his sleeve hard over his stupid wet eyes. “Thank you.”

“You do not need to thank me, Jingyi, this is my responsibility. Now - I wish to re-teach you everything that you have struggled with so far, and that is why I have asked you to tell me what you struggle with. It is not so that I can hurt you, or so that I can ask why you do not understand basic concepts at your age. I know why you don’t as I have just established, I only need to know what I must teach you. Can you tell me?”

And Jingyi - finally willing to begin to trust that if Lan-xiansheng were trying to trap him he would just say so - tells him. Everything.

I love the theory that resentful energy can’t heal but can hold things in stasis, and thus WWX is literally being held together with resentful energy. Because otherwise how did he survive getting stabbed and dropped at great height and starving all without a golden core.
