It was exactly 2:36 in the afternoon when Albert got the call from the adoption agency. Him and Finch were hanging out with Spot and Race, and he stepped out onto the balcony of their apartment to take the call. Finch eyed Albert warily as he was on the phone, instantly throwing himself off the couch when he saw tears leave Albert's eyes.

"Babe what's wrong?" Finch asked, a concerned look displayed across his face. Albert looked him in the eyes, and smiled.

"We got the baby," He uttered the words both excitedly and nervously.

Finch took a whole ten seconds to process the words that just left Albert's mouth before tightly wrapping his arms around Albert, who returned the embrace almost instantly.

"You're gonna be such a great dad," Finch whispered, feeling hot tears of joy run down his cheeks.

"Are you kidding? I can't wait to see you hold her," Albert returned, laughing as tears fell down as well.

"You guys alright out here?" Race opened the door, almost as concerned as Finch was before hearing the news.

"We got the baby," Albert smiled.

"Holy shit!" Spot stood up off the couch and ran over.

"We gotta go shopping!" Albert turned to Finch.

Thirty minutes later, Spot, Race, Albert, and Finch were all searching the aisles of Walmart for everything they might need for their new baby girl.

"Awww," Spot whispered to himself as he picked up a newborn onesie.

"Getting baby fever, spotty?" Albert came up behind Spot.

"Nah, we're not in the right place for a baby," Spot explained. Albert and Finch had been married for two years now, But Spot and Race hadn't even gotten engaged.

"Well who knows, maybe someday," Albert countered.

"Someday," Spot repeated.

The four bought every possible thing a baby girl might need, from too many baby bottles, to three different kinds of diapers, a crib, toys, binkies, enough clothes for three newborns, and more.

And before they knew it, Albert and Finch were on their way home from the hospital, a new baby girl in the backseat.

"Ready to see your new home, Addy?" Finch leaned over the passenger seat as he spoke to the baby. Albert looked over, admiring the sight of his husband having goo goo eyes over the precious baby.

Albert couldn't have felt happier in this moment. His loving husband, a new baby girl, and a beautiful nursery waiting at home? it took him so long to get here, but they made it.

The three pulled up to their apartment building, taking it slow on the walk home. Albert unlocked the door as Finch held the carrier, and they took her to her brand new room.

"Welcome home baby Addy," Albert whispered as they opening the door to the room which Jack had generously covered in a mural of a bright blue sky with clouds, the crib that Spot had built in the corner, the baby sized newsie cap sitting on a shelf Davey had put up. So much love had been put into this nursery by their surrounding chosen family, and they couldn't wait to raise this baby girl here.

I understand that species evolve and m,utate so that they can eventually become separate species. But where does it start, how does it actually work when we're talking of individuals. Say we have A and B. A is the parent of B. Now we have C. And let's say A and C can mate. But suddenly B and C cannot mate? Does that even make sense? So who can C mate with? How might rhey suddenly be able ro find someone who has the same mutation and can mate with each other? Also, what if it's a species who are mostly monogamous and aren't trying to go through multiple partners to see if they can get children if they couldn't.

Tex: DNA, RNA, and the like are constantly responding to environmental stressors, which causes permutations in the recorded code in order to better adapt to an organism’s niche fitness. Over a generational period, this can be interpreted as the beginnings of evolutions, where genetic expression will eventually change phenotypic characteristics. When there’s sufficient genetic drift over a period of several generations, that’s when we see classical evolution. This can be anything from the changing of beak type according to different food types available (see: Darwin’s finches) to changing active waking hours (Ofir Levy et al.). Evolution is an accumulative effect that begins with individual reactions to one’s environment to better adapt to it.

Ergo, if A, B, and C have a similar enough genetic ancestor, they are likely to be compatible species that will successfully reproduce regardless of the configuration you put them in. For the purposes of your worldbuilding, species that have the required reproductive compatibility to successfully have an offspring (see: Felis genus).

Addy: So in life, things are constantly changing and mutating. I have mutations from my parents, who have mutations from their parents, and so on. DNA gets mixed up in every generation, which is actually one of the advantages of sexual reproduction (as opposed to asexual reproduction, which basically makes clones). More genetic diversity means that, for a given issue, there's a higher chance that some portion of the population will have an adaptation/mutation that will help out. Different blood types, in humans, are associated with susceptibility to different diseases (link below). Different blood types have different types of receptors, and different diseases tend to prefer different receptors for infiltration.

So if you've got a population with a ride range of blood types, then you've got a segment of your population that's going to be less vulnerable (not quite resistant, but close enough) to a given disease.

So that's happening on a wide scale in every generation in every species. What happens with breeding/producing offspring is that over time (many, many generations), as mutations accumulate, it becomes harder and harder for new generations to (theoretically) have offspring with older generations. The line of where a new species starts is… pretty fuzzy.

Think of colors. Green and blue are different colors, and that's pretty obvious to us. But if we put a gradient from blue to green, when does it stop being blue? It it at cerulean? Turquoise? Emerald? Sea foam green? Lime? When does one color start and the other begin?

There isn't a fine line. Blue doesn't just suddenly become green, it slowly changes shades. It's like asking when red becomes pink, or when light gray becomes medium gray or medium gray becomes dark gray.

Evolution is a lot like that. It's a series of slow changes that slowly turn a species into something a little different, then something a little different from that, and then eventually it seems distinct enough that we label it as something new. To the population, at any given time, everyone just seems to be a half a shade apart at most.

When you get to stuff like ligers or mules, that's an example of two shades that are too far apart to have viable offspring (as in a child that can reproduce), but they're still just similar enough that they can have a kid at all.

Wootzel: I only have one little thing to add: Usually, new species don’t arise from a common ancestor unless the whole population of that common ancestor ends up split by some kind of boundary that cannot be crossed (frequently, anyway). If a population is in a fairly contiguous area for a long time, then mutations that crop up are likely to spread within the population, even if slowly, and the whole is unlikely to diversify enough to create separate species.

Your scenario of A, B, and C having only partial ability to breed between them is wildly unlikely. If A is the parent of B, and B had a spontaneous mutation occur in early development which changed the number of its chromosomes but was still viable (Rare! Very rare! Most changes to chromosome count are fatal, infertile, or have massive developmental impacts that reduce offspring fitness), then I could see B being unable to produce offspring with any individual that A is compatible with. B would likely be genetically incompatible with any other member of its species, unless along came another individual with the same mutation.

Adeline - a character I don't yet believe I have introduced to writerblr yet, but my baby nonetheless (and one of Teo's little gang of travelling thieves) - has a nervous habit of playing with the rosary that sits around her neck. It's not because she is particularly religiously inclined, but because when she was a little girl who suffered with nightmares, her mother would come to her bedside, put her rosary on her and sing her to sleep. Now it serves as a symbol of protection for Addie. If she clutches at her necklace, there's a heavy chance that shit is about to hit the fan.

There is a place in Infernelle called Lake Celeste (a tentative working title) which has a rich lore behind it that I haven't had the chance to properly explore so far in my WIP. Legend has it that the lake came to be when the first Seraphs were cast to earth and their descent from the heavens caused a crater when they landed. The water that then filled the depths became known to have magical properties such as being able to conceal treasures hidden beneath the surface from the naked eye.

And yes, Queen Reinette may be a truly evil little bitch, but that didn't stop me from naming her after Queen Reinette Poisson/Madame De Pompadour. No, not the actual historical figure, King Louis XV's chief mistress. Yes, the Reinette from my favourite ever episode of Doctor Who - The Girl In The Fireplace. "I just snogged Madame De Pompadour!" :)

The town Rowan lives in as a human is called 'Fálthuin' which I derived from Irish Gaelic and smashed together from the words (Fáil – destiny/prophecy | Tuin – dark/shadowed). So to those privy to that information, the name implies that the town itself and/or its residents have a sinister destiny awaiting them.

Killeen, the Fae Inquisitor, is named after my Grandfather's homestead in Ireland :) I also just thought it was fitting because she's a badass lil killing machine.

Killeen came to be because I created her as a DnD character years ago and the never got to use her in a campaign so I said fuck it and used her in a novel instead. AND THEN THREE BLOODY WEEKS LATER ME AND MY PALS STARTED A DnD CAMPAIGN >:( so now I use Nevaeh (from Project.Seraph) as my DnD muse lmao

What everyone remembers about Network is its prescient look at the corruption of American television news. It's not just that the rantings of Howard Beale (Peter Finch) foreshadow the diatribes of Tucker Carlson, et al., it's that where once TV news was in the hands of Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite, trusted and avuncular, it's now dominated by the glamorous and glib. But the chief problem is that recalling Network as a satire on television misses its real target: corporate capitalism. What we remember from the film is Beale's "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore," Diana Christensen (Faye Dunaway in perhaps her best performance) reaching orgasm at the very thought of improving her network's ratings, and Diana and Frank Hackett (Robert Duvall) conspiring to assassinate Beale after his ratings decline. What we should remember is that Beale's ratings decline because he decides to tell his audiences what he perceives as the truth: that they've become mere pawns in a multinational drive to subsume individuality into corporate identity. The key scene in the film really belongs to Ned Beatty as Arthur Jensen, the head of the Communications Corporation of America, the conglomerate that owns the network and that Beale has disclosed is about to be taken over by a Saudi Arabian conglomerate. In the voice of God, Jensen tells Beale, "There is only one holistic system of systems, one vast and immanent, interwoven, interacting, multivariate, multinational dominion of dollars. Petro-dollars, electro-dollars, multi-dollars, reichmarks, yens, rubles, pounds, and shekels. It is the international system of currency which determines the totality of life on this planet. That is the natural order of things today." But when Beale tries to share this epiphany with his audience, they forsake him. In other words, remembering Network as a satire on television is to mistake the symptom -- the dumbing-down of journalism (and it applies as well to print as to electronic media) -- for the disease: the cancer of corporate greed. The screenplay by Paddy Chayefsky is partly at fault for making Howard Beale and Diana Christensen and the old-fashioned TV news executive Max Schumacher (William Holden) the central figures of the film instead of Jensen. It might have been partly remedied if Jensen had been played by a figure of equal charisma to Finch, Dunaway, and Holden, instead of by Beatty, a likable character actor best known for being violated by mountain men in Deliverance (John Boorman, 1972). (That said, Beatty delivers a terrific performance in his big scene, which deservedly earned him an Oscar nomination.) In the end, Network is really a kind of nihilist satire, not far removed in that regard from Dr. Strangelove (Stanley Kubrick, 1964) in its presentation of a world without alternatives or saviors. It's an entertaining film, with wonderful performances, but a depressing one.

Biography

Bishop Donadieu had a long history with the Vactican, originally joining their ranks out of college to join the Department of Inquisition to aid in their weaponry. While particularly skilled with electronics, he boasted a doctorate in biochemical engineering and sought to use lost technology to "better" human bodies. It was his belief that this was the key to surpassing the Methuselah. He was eventually dismissed of his position and he fled Rome to the far side of Franc, taking up the empty opening of a congregation needing a leader. His cover was working well and he was able to slowly instill his ideas within the people of their region. One morning, he found a newborn placed on the steps of his church. Born of an impoverished young couple of a farm from a neighboring village, Adelaide never got the opportunity to meet her biological family. Frightened of the expenses a child with total blindness would cost them, Adelaide was left in a basket with nothing but a blanket. It was Bishop Donadieu that gifted her name and built a place within the Church for her to stay. The event inspired him, leading to an addition to the building and more children brought underneath his wing. Kindred Hearts All Girl’s Orphan Home. In her youthful years, Adelaide developed a keen ear for sound. Her favorite past times were climbing into the church rafters, despite the scolding of the Sisters watching over her, to hear the bells more closely. She taught herself to mimic the birds that she would often hear, memorizing each by sound, and eventually her fascination travels to the human voice. The young girl became involved with the choir. Papa, however, saw different potential in her. Her skills could be honed to make a soldier. When she wasn't looking after the girls and running the choir, her free time begins to dwindle away with more responsibilities and training. On her sixteenth birthday Papa offered Adelaide a gift; a chance at sight and to become his first living test subject. Much to his surprise, Adelaide had rejected the proposition. She was content with her existence and saw no reason to change herself. Negating her request, Papa carried on with the surgery regardless. It was, in his mind, a huge success. With the gift of sight also came a great resentment. Adelaide was furious about what he had done to her, but over time he eventually convinced her that her gift was all part of God’s plan. She had a purpose and a duty and he simply gave her the tools to carry it out. Adelaide stayed with the Orphanage, even after she came of age she took on the role of a caretaker and an underling to Papa’s demands. The young nun had one request in exchange for her service: she would be his last project. Years of servitude pass and all seems to be going well. For the sake of secrecy, Adelaide is kept hidden from most outsiders with the exceptions of Papa’s inner circle and the children that she cares for. She becomes more antiquated with her “gifts” and all their capabilities, and training herself to use them in a way that her Papa deems appropriate. Watching from the rooftops in the late hours of the night, Adelaide promises to be a protector of their home. A string of disappearances of girls from the orphanage puts their home on high alert. Papa has convinced all that this is the beginning of the vampire’s invasions. This is when AX is sent to intervene and Adelaide makes her unfortunate discovery. All the missing girls had been located, suffering a fate similar to their dear sister Addy, but the outcome had not been so favorable for them. Being convinced to not deal the killing blow to her former father figure, Adelaide agrees instead to testify against him. Left feeling defeated, she decides to take this as an opportunity to find a new purpose. She had a gift to use, however, it needed to be redirected. Sister Adelaide transfers to Rome and offers her services up to the Papal State Affairs Special Operations Section.
