Historically accurate (enough) Ben Tallmadge be upon ye.

Explanation and history spiel under the cut <3

TURN did better than most period pieces with costuming so I didn’t really have to change that much (flowers for Donna Zakowska), but my own historical costuming brain was like But What If I Did?? Now I obviously took some liberties here for the sake of clarity and The Rule of Cool, but I’ll explain them when we cross the bridge. I’m also not a historical fashion expert. My end goal for this was to integrate real life concepts into the stylized depictions of the TV show.

Until around 1780, the Continental Army was notably impoverished, and had no standard uniform (and arguably it never would). Soldiers and militiamen simply wore their civilian clothes, and high-ranking officers wore repurposed uniforms from other conflicts if they had them. But for the most part, it was hard to distinguish the average private from a commissioned service member. To differentiate ranks, color-coded sashes and cockades were worn around the body and pinned to the hat. These would indicate to everyone who held which title with no uniform to go off of.

Season 1 Costume:

Some background: 1776 is widely agreed upon as the terrible horrible no good very bad year for the continental army. They were beat down and penniless. If the Americans were to ever loose the AWI, 1776 would have been the year it happened. Washington was pulling the army up by their threadbare bootstraps. The monumental loss of New York to the Brits and subsequent fleeing of the continental army to Connecticut was the main sore spot here, and in that chaos is where TURN season 1 starts.

Ben Tallmadge in TURN is a major and and Aid De Camp (he might not be officially named as an ADC but for all intents and purposes he replaced Hamilton for like 2 whole seasons so I gave him the title anyways). Prior to Washington begging congress to order uniforms in 1780, Ben would have been frolicking around in his plain clothes for the majority of the war. Men’s plain clothes of this era included the linen shirt, waistcoat, cravat, coat, breeches, stockings, buckled shoes, and a hat.

The reason cockades were chosen to denote rank is because wearing a hat in public was actually considered common decency. It was improper (or at the very least lacking manners) to not wear one out. Every man would be wearing a hat, thus they would always have their chosen cockade on display. Ben wears a red one, which signals that he is a major. In the show the hat custom is forgone in favor of actually being able to see the actors’ faces (and their amazing hair), which is totally understandable. I’ve restored Ben’s hat in my design, though.

Another thing I have added is a pair of spatterdashes, which are cloth sock things that buckle over one’s shoes and shins to keep the mud and gunk from ruining the stockings and soaking down into your shoes. Ben spends most of his time outside, and has no issued pair of boots (which weren’t really the most efficient or comfortable form of footwear at the time anyways) on account of the No Money thing, so he wears his spatterdashes to make his poor buckled shoes last longer.

In reality, Ben would have been wearing this utterly dazzling outfit until the end of season 3. However, I’ve decided to suspend the historical record and let him have a Season 2 glow-up into the blue-coated major we all know and love.

Season 2 Costume:

So after 1780 (or I guess 1777 in this case), Congress decided to fund Washington’s request for regimental uniforms across the continental army. Not everyone was wearing a blue and white coat, but Ben Tallmadge was. Turn’s portrayal of the iconic garment has the top of the coat unbuttoned to make it look less goofy, which I’ve kept here because I agree with the change. His coat is also fairly loose-fitting, which is another thing I kept because it gives the boyish yet elegant look befitting of an inexperienced yet determined continental major. Tallmadge would have only been nineteen/twenty years old at this time (the average age in the American army was sixteen), so highlighting his youth was a good decision on TURN’s part.

Buff/white (more like off-white) waistcoats and breeches were another standard item worn by all soldiers and ranking officers (circumstances permitting).

The green sash indicates his Aid De Camp status, which I didn’t include in the S1 look because it would have looked extremely strange. These may have been out of fashion by the time uniforms were introduced, but we see Washington wearing his own blue sash throughout the entire series, and Ben is the king of idolizing that man (and boasting that Washington considers him important), so I have him wearing it.

His red cockade is gone, instead the gold insignias mounted on his shoulders (these were introduced by John Hancock in 1779) tell his rank as a major. In place of a red cockade is a black and white one, which became the standard throughout all the ranks. He could have worn a cockade designed specifically for majors and ADC’s, but I haven’t seen any evidence of these being used save for hearsay and they elevate the look from foppish to full on decorative ice cream, so I excluded them.

Now down to the boots. I swiped these directly off of George Washington’s uniform, which they have displayed at the Smithsonian. It’s more likely Ben would have still been wearing that trusty spatterdashes+buckled shoes combo (this was the standard of the British forces at the time), but to honor The Rule of Cool I let him have those genre defining boots. He does see more combat on horseback as the series progresses, so the boots aren’t entirely inappropriate.

Conclusion:

Despite my obvious passion for this topic, I understand why TURN made the costuming choices it did. Having the continental army just be a group of Random Guys would have been confusing to the average viewer who does not know all this trivial nonsense. And to their credit, TURN actually did dress the nameless extras pretty appropriately throughout the whole series. I just think that showing the continentals in their true “rag-tag volunteer army in need of a shower” form, then have them progress visually throughout the show would have been a brave and effective storytelling choice. It would have been a bit ahead of its time, but now that it’s been ten years I don’t think the creators would care about me dogging on them.

OOC Ramble 30 April 2024: On our Discord server @askgeraudduroc brought up voice claims for our RPs of various Napoleonic figures. Tiny Media's take on Murat earwormed me awhile back, probably due to having grown up in the American South. So in my head, Murat's been speaking with a Texan drawl this whole time.

Historically, Bessières had the same accent as Murat, just not quite as thick, so I've been hearing Bessie in my head with a not-as-thick Texas accent. 👀

I don't like writing in dialect, however, and I've been avoiding it due to not wanting to break immersion but with @askgeraudduroc's blessing, I'm going to drop in a few more Texan-isms into their dialogue. And "Hunnybunnkins." That's my Murat's pet name for Bessie. Is he going to Calle Bessie "Hunnybunnkins"? You betcha!

As for the title, you're completely right that "mad scientist" refers to Lehends - you know how some players have titles, like how Faker is the Unkillable Demon King and Keria is the Legendary Genius Monster? Lehends's title is the "Mad Scientist Support", which, as you can probably guess, originated from his fondness for playing Singed (the mad scientist champion) in the support role. I'd like to think the title also refers to his tendency to brew up other unconventional support picks, like Elise or Annie, although of course both BeryL and Keria are known for doing the same thing.

"Incorrigible" can be either a noun or an adjective, and it has two meanings, the first of which is pretty straight-forward: someone 'incorrigible' is known for their depraved or taboo behavior, such as, for a random example, sleeping with every ADC you've ever played with. However, when taken more literally, to be 'incorrigible' means to be helpless, to be broken beyond saving, which I intended to say something poetic about Lehends's emotional state.

And then of course the initials spell out MSI, as you already noticed.

When Googling synonyms for incorrigible, the word "unruly" came up and I'm DEAD - it fits too well - MSI acronym canceled the fic is called "Lehends Unruly" now-

Season 2024 Look Ahead

A very quick summary of the dev video posted an hour ago. This summary is mostly skin/champion-related with very little regarding gameplay.

Skarner VGU is very close to being released

An Arcane character will be receiving a VGU early next year -> this was specifically called an "Arcane-inspired VGU", aiming to bring "their Arcane version to the rift" featuring updated visuals, voice lines, and gameplay, which leads me to believe that this character is Viktor though Singed and maybe even Heimerdinger also seem possible.

Shyvana VGU will be released in 2025 after the Arcane character VGU -> her VGU will focus more on visuals and expanding her lore rather than overhauling it. from the concept art, they appear to be working on making her buffer, which was, from what I saw, a common grievance about her Immortal Journey splash art.

Dragon ADC Smolder has been revealed. His abilities can be found in a video posted by SkinSpotlights.

Mel's mother, Ambessa Medarda, will be released as a champion and "won't be for the faint of heart in game".

Arcane S2 will bring new gameplay and new skins -> based on the trailer, both Singed and Warwick appear to be contenders for receiving an Arcane skin. Viktor, especially as a fan-favorite, also seems likely, though I'm not sure how that might work if it is released before his supposed VGU.

The following champions will be receiving a prestige skin in the first half of 2024: Rakan, Ezreal, Kindred, Evelynn, Kayle. Rakan's has already been revealed to be Prestige Dragonmancer Rakan. Ezreal's prestige will be for this year's Lunar New Year skinline, Heavenscale, which will focus more on an ancient thematic similar to Lunar Revel.

Other champions receiving a Heavenscale skin include Lee Sin, Kai'Sa, Master Yi, Diana, Janna, and Smolder. -> this makes Kai'Sa's second Lunar New Year skin when counting Wild Rift's Lunar Fairy Kai'Sa (third if you also include her Special Edition/Prestige), Ezreal's second (third, again, if you count his prestige), and Diana's third without any variants (bc she's the moon get it).

New Primal Ambush skinline revolves around tiger thematics and draws heavy inspiration from Southeast Asian cultures. Champions receiving a Primal Ambush skin include Vi, Talon, Sivir, and Riven, each with icons.

Porcelain, Faerie Court, PROJECT, and Blood Moon will be returning in the first half of the year -> this was not included in the video but was posted by BBB: the champions receiving a Porcelain skin include Kindred (prestige), Graves, Darius, Miss Fortune, Morgana, Irelia, and Aurelion Sol.

Old legendary skins will be revisited to receive loading screen borders.

now we know swearing is not allowed in The Amazing Digital Circus

this probably also applies to name input

since "penis" would alert the censor program they were probably attempting to write "pnis" to get around the game's censorship software

hamfisting the letters P and N on the keyboard they accidentally typed 'po' and 'mn' in their haste resulting in "pomnis" but since there are only 5 character spaces we see the name as "Pomni"

i mean hamfisting the keys also kinda makes sense if you take the previous name as well "xddcc" i mean judging by the key placement of those letters it's possible they lost the place of the WSAD keys and were attempting to go left, up, up, down, down

this might seem like a random direction input but it actually might have been an attempt to type the Konami cheat code Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start a famous set of inputs in games first used by Konami to unlock cheats in many of their games in the 90's and subsequently adopted by other game developers as a sort of nod to the famous code

now maybe they typed the code wrong or maybe they typed it correctly for the form of it that exists in this game or more widely the universe the game exists as a game in or they entered it in correctly after first pressing left beforehand

at any rate using keys so low on the keyboard is probably to compensate for the fact that the user can't see the keyboard once they are wearing the headset

and also if you take a look at said keyboard you might see there next to those keys the windows icon key that pops up the start menu so maybe the key binding was set this low so they could easily press that "start button"

but what if the code isn't as wrong as we thought since we know of one game where "right, left, down, down, up, up" forms part of the cheat code in game and that game is Gyruss

in a particular version of Gyruss this code increases the graphical detail which is something we see when the amazing digital circus actually starts

now in Gyruss certain objects fly in a circle which is what we see during ADC's intro and though that's only a minor nod to it one thing that must be pointed out is that this code only works on a certain version this version being one that utilises the Famicon Disk System

now this is actually a very important detail since floppy disks for the FDS can run on a personal computer if you use the right software and even better than that Gyruss also had VR headset support

and just in case that wasn't enough to convince you

these horizontal grey units next to Pomni's desk is the exact tech you would use to convert the drives so you can emulate the game on a personal computer

also the black thing in shadow is a Hyperkin Retron 1 HD Gaming Console as you can just about make out those iconic 2 vertical ports

and of course sat in front of it is a modified Game Boy Advance and a flash drive data strip

so as far as i can tell "Pomni" is someone who works for a company that takes outdated nintendo properties emulates them onto new hardware and then alters the graphical content to produce cheat bottleg products

just like the kinds of things that would be sold in bulk online for unsuspecting parents to buy

and this along with the fact that the company name is synonymous with "Cain and Abel" from the bible where one person destroyed the other all in an attempt to steal their success says quite a lot

now Gyruss did have a bootleg called Venus that due to certain distribution laws ended up being massively successful in Austria and Germany where as the original did not

and lest we forget the situation Germany around the time of said events the 1998 German federal election in which employment was low and those with the tech needed were situated in the far-right swinging regions of the nation at the time

in fact there is quite a lot to suggest that this may be some sort of creepy pasta in which the remnants of the right in Germany are in some way cracking down or experimenting on and analysing people who don't meet their exact standards and moreso i suspect that the player is a man and chose a female character which could be problematic in this case

in fact with this knowledge i think ADC might be taking some inspiration (if only in concept) from a game called Circus from 1994

a game created using elements from Circus Charlie which is a Konami property from 1984

especially since "charlie" in this case was deliberately designed to be a gender ambiguous character which when you think about it SO IS POMNI
