The Underground

Abby sat in front of the vanity combing her long blonde hair. Curls cascaded around her shoulders as she finished getting ready. Her best friend America sat across from her talking on the phone to Shepley. The two had been dating since their junior year in high school. They were now freshman in college and still going strong.

"What time is the fight, Shep?" America asked him in a rather upbeat tone. Of course, Abby could not hear what was being said, but she could only imagine. The look on her best friend's face showed that something was going on. Abby was not too happy when it came to secrets or any hidden agendas. The only thing she could think of was that her friends were trying to set her up with someone. The question was who? That is what was pondering her mind. America ended the call before turning to face Abby.

"Ok, ok. I know you are against violence and all that, but I promise you will have fun tonight. Shep's cousin is fighting at "The Underground" and afterward we are going out to a club. Drinks and dancing. Just a late night of fun before the semester starts. Also..."

America paused and Abby let out a sigh. She knew what was coming next and shook her head.

"Let me guess. You and Shepley want me to meet someone. He is single, good-looking, and blah, blah..." America's jaw dropped when hearing Abby speak.

"I already told you, America. I'm not interested in meeting anyone. I'm here to focus on school and get through the semester. I do not need any distractions. I have set goals for myself and intend to keep them. I'll go, but after the fight, I will come home. Understood?" Abby was adamant and would not budge. No matter how much America whined.

"Fine. Fine. Fight and home. I get it." America smiled slightly but had other plans in mind. Shepley had promised his cousin Travis a blind date and Abby would be there.

AMERICAN GOTHIC

Gothic architecture emerged in the Ile-de-France around 1140 and ended in the United States in the 1930s.

Fittingly, the last architects to build in the Gothic style were primarily drawn to its late, florid period. Saint Patrick's Cathedral, a studied summa of the rayonnant and flamboyant styles, is the most convincing recreation of a medieval building this country. Early skyscrapers like the Woolworth Building in lower Manhattan and the Tribune Tower in Chicago acknowledge their debt to the first generation of vertically-oriented buildings in their creative reinterpretation of flamboyant decoration.

The broad, low-pitched arches and intricate vault tracery of the English Decorated and Perpendicular styles, derived mainly from late medieval halls and chapels at Oxford and Cambridge, served as the architectural model formany elite East Coast academic institutions. The Neo-Gothic,ivy-clad core campuses of Yale, Duke, the Universities of Chicago, Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh and the crown jewel of "collegiate Gothic," Princeton University, are synonymous with higher education in the American imaginary.

Modernism and capitalism brought an abrupt end to American Gothic architecture. The modernist rejection of 19th-century eclecticism and historical revival styles coincided with the Great Depression, during which the astronomical cost of constructing, and then maintaining, stone vaults, lead armatures and stained glass, carved moldings and gargoyles, hammerbeam ceilings, and bell towers became unsustainable for all but the wealthiest patrons.

The world's largest church built in the Gothic style is in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of Harlem. Construction began on the vast Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in 1892, but structural and fiscal difficulties have brought the project to a halt several times and there is no completion date projected.

Academic highlight: Lawyers with more experience obtain better outcomes

Michael J. Nelson is Jeffrey L. Hyde and Sharon D. Hyde and Political Science Board of Visitors Early Career Professor in Political Science at Penn State University. Lee Epstein is Ethan A.H. Shepley Distinguished University Professor at Washington University in St. Louis.

In response to a question about the importance of experienced attorneys in the Supreme Court, Justice Clarence Thomas said:

If it’s my money on the line, I’d be as risk averse as anybody else. I mean you go with the .400 hitter. That doesn’t mean you’re gonna win but … go with someone who will increase your odds.

Supporting Thomas’ response is long-standing theory on human capital. The idea is that through work experience, individuals acquire on-the-job-training, sometimes highly specialized training, which leads them to be more productive and more successful, and, in turn, earn higher salaries. For this reason, litigants who retain experienced Supreme Court lawyers should be at an advantage relative to those who hire first-timers. As Justice Robert Jackson, a seasoned Supreme Court litigator, put it, “Experience before the Supreme Court is valuable, as is experience in any art. One who is at ease in its presence, familiar with its practice … holds some advantage over the stranger to such matters.”

Speculating about the importance of experience — however informed the speculator — is one thing; providing evidence is quite another. It’s really difficult to compare the two sides in any case because of imbalances in quality and resources. Another complication is that first-timers and “repeat players” differ in important ways. Data show that lawyers with experience more often represented the petitioner, worked in Washington, attended a top law school, litigated civil cases. And on and on.

To solve these problems, we conducted a study focused on Supreme Court cases (argued between the 1980 and 2017 terms) in which the Office of the Solicitor General represented the petitioner or respondent. Because of the high quality of the government’s lawyers, a focus on OSG cases allows for comparisons between novice and experienced attorneys without requiring a lot of assumptions about which side has the “net advantage.” What this means is that the question in our study is not how novice and more experienced attorneys fare when they face each other; it is rather how both types of attorneys fare against a comparable opponent: the OSG.

Next, to avoid comparing apples and oranges, we matched novice and experienced attorneys who were alike on all the relevant factors we could observe (e.g., whether they represented the petitioner, worked in Washington, etc.)—except, of course, whether they had argued in the Supreme Court before or not.

A statistical analysis using the matched dataset shows that Thomas and Jackson got it exactly right. An experienced attorney, relative to a first-timer, increases the likelihood of winning a case by 14 percentage points and of capturing a justice’s vote by 11 percentage points. Considering the apples-to-apples comparison, these are substantial differences. (The study is here; Adam Liptak’s comprehensible description is here.)

Boston Society of Architects announces the winners of the 2018 BSA Design Awards Gala

BOSTON—The Boston Society of Architects/AIA (BSA/AIA) announced the winners of the 2018 BSA Design Awards in various categories, including: Campus and Urban Planning; Healthcare Facilities Design; Hospitality Design (hosted for the first time in 2018); Interior Architecture and Design; Sustainable Design, Unbuilt Architecture and Design; Honor Awards for Design Excellence, juried by AIA Minnesota; the Harleston Parker Medal; and the People’s Choice Award, selected from the Harleston Parker Medal finalists.

The sole criterion was design excellence, BSA said in a statement. Other award types, given to individuals by their peers, included BSA Award of Honor Medal, the BSA Earl R. Flansburgh Young Architects Award, the BSA Commonwealth Award, and BSA Honorary Membership.

The winners were announced at the 8th BSA Design Awards Gala on January 17, hosted at BSA Space. The Gala was sponsored by:

The Greenway is the contemporary public park in the heart of Boston. The Greenway welcomes millions of visitors annually to gather, play, unwind, and explore. The Greenway Conservancy is the non-profit responsible for the management and care of The Greenway. The majority of the public park’s annual budget is generously provided by private sources.

This year’s recipients are Lisa Brothers PE and Judy Nitsch PE from Nitsch Engineering in recognition of their commitment to collaboration and the advancement of the AEC industry.

Lisa has more than 30 years of experience in the design, construction, and management of roadway, site development, sustainable design, and infrastructure-related projects. As chairman and CEO of Nitsch Engineering, Lisa is responsible for the vision, growth strategy, strategic direction, and overall performance of the firm.

Established in 1867, the BSA/AIA today consists of nearly 4,500 members and produces content for an array of programs and publications, including ArchitectureBoston Expo (ABX) and ArchitectureBoston magazine. A chapter of the American Institute of Architects, the BSA/AIA is a nonprofit, professional-service organization.

Each year the BSA, often in collaboration with other organizations, sponsors award programs to honor design excellence in Massachusetts, throughout New England, and elsewhere. All winners are announced at the annual BSA Design Awards Gala. The call for entries to the 2019 programs will be released in February.

Okey va la reseña: Abby esta en su primer año de la universidad una chica buena que no busca problemas pero que esconde un secreto 😞.Travis es el tipico chico malo super musculoso con unos hermosos tatuajes ojos marrones perfectos y tiene a todas las chicas detras de el, pelea en unas peleas clandestinas organisadas por Adam un chico de la universidad, inmediatamente travis se siente atraido por Abby pero ella no quiere tener nada que ver con los problemas sobre todo desde que decidio ir al otro lado del pais con si mejor amiga America (novia de Shepley -primo de Travis) para escapar de su pasado y Travis sin duda irradia peligro y mala rachas pero Travis no se da por vencido facilmente.

Hello, I am alive, PARF-fan content is not necessarily resuming at this point because capitalism exists and abelism exists and I don’t get enough sleep these days even without spending time actively updating this blog.

BUT!

As anyone who subscribes to Mount Hope’s newsletter or follows them on the magical Book of Faces undoubtedly already knows, the Faire is a go for September and October, albeit under very strict perimeters.  There will be no streetwork, and thus no Blackfryars, and but a skeleton crew of Bacchanalians.  Out-of-house acts are likewise reduced.  I’m frankly too tired to rephrase everything right about now, so I’m going to just drop the image from the Faire’s facebook page here.  I’ve pasted the text from the email below it, if that’s more your speed. (I think the contents are the same, but I haven’t done a side-by-side comparison.)

Greetings!

I am excited beyond words that we are soon able open to celebrate the 40th season of the glorious Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire.  It certainly isn't how we had hoped to commemorate this momentous milestone, but, in a way, this year's Faire experience will harken back to "the olden days" when crowds were smaller and intimacy was the order of the day.

We will operate this Fall significantly different than what we have become accustomed to as we adapt to the new landscape created by COVID-19.

Our maximum daily attendance will be set at 25% of capacity as we swing wide the castle gates. Smaller audiences will ensure safe and socially distanced seating at stages and eating areas as well as shorter queuing lines at Faire gates, kitchens and merchant booths.

Advance, date specific tickets will be required in keeping with the strict attendance limitations as directed by the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

In addition to the reduction of audience size, we will be taking extraordinary efforts to ensure a safe and comfortable Faire day, including CDC approved sanitizer stations at every food booth, merchant booth, and stage area, as well as requirements of face coverings for staff, performers (not performing), vendors and guests throughout their stay, and reminders of social distancing throughout the Faire grounds.

As we are only open weekends, increased sanitation and cleaning using CDC approved cleaning equipment and sanitizers will take place after each Faire day as well as during the week. Every member of our staff will be screened before they begin each Faire day and we will encourage guests to self-monitor their health before joining us at the Faire.

All health and safety information will be published to our website and updated as new policies or procedures are mandated. We will follow the lead of our other great PA amusement and theme parks (including HersheyPark, Dorney Park, Sesame Place and many others) as we carefully monitor Dept of Health policies to assure a safe experience.     As we continue working towards welcoming Her Majesty, our overriding concern is providing a safe Shire for all staff, performers and patrons to put aside life's everyday concerns, even if for but a few short hours.

Since the beginning of this crisis, our choices have been rooted in the health, safety and well-being of hundreds of actors, performers, merchants and staff, as well as the many thousands of patrons who visit to experience the fantasy of the Faire.

With new policies and precautions in place and, with the cooperation of all, we can look forward to sharing a very special 40th Anniversary season together.

As far as I understand it, the Faire is taking just about every single precaution short of actually not running this year.  It’ll come down to whether or not they actually enforce the whole hey-patrons-wear-a-mask-and-wear-it-right thing.

But my chief purpose here is to share what, as is their wont, the Faire hath not posted upon their Facebook: the cast list!

At this point, characters have not been announced anywhere; and though a visit to the Faire’s website will yield costumed headshots, those are definitely not going to be the characters – at least not all of them, not unless the plot involves all of time having collapsed even more than usual.

My observations:

A small enough cast that the living quarters might actually be spread out enough to be safe for them, THANK GOD.

Looking like there’s likely no in-house combat (only two actors have been on the combat track that I know of), which makes sense.  Also probably no in-house music groups (only two have been on music track that I know of), which also makes sense.  So pretty much improv only, then.  Wise decision, all things considered.

My Lady Dana Micciché hath been robbed of her accent mark on the Faire’s site, but is a Bacchanalian this year?  Hell yes?

I was about to say that the only casting I feel remotely confident will be the same is Mary Huff as Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, but then it occurred to me that with so small a cast, the story might well call for not having a royal progress happening this time.  That’s what I would do if I were writing it in this situation.  Then it also occurred to me that having Mary Huff as Queen Elizabeth again would enable the writers to bring back a couple of insanely popular characters that likely would not logistically be able to return otherwise. (I’m referring, of course, to Jonathan Handley and Alex Stompoly as Sirs William Pickering and Henry Carey, respectively, because I stg some patrons of last year only recognize or acknowledge or care about those two.) So now I’m sure of nothing.

I had words I wanted to make about how I would arrange things in this situation, because I am theoretically a writer and like to play what-if sometimes, but no matter how I phrased things, it sounded like I was either trying to predict things or (worse) trying to unsubtlely drop hints directed at the writers and directors about what they should totally do.  Which, nope.

HI HELLO YES I AM VERY EXCITED RIGHT NOW

Courtesy of a certain actor’s weekly livestream, I knew that some of the characters would be reprisals and some would be new.  As it happens, three are new characters and seven are reprisals.  No character descriptions at this point, but four of the reprisals are from last year, and I shall begin with them, using last year’s descriptions.

Mary Huff :  Queen Elizabeth I – Queen of England

Young and full of hope for the future of her country, Queen Elizabeth I is eager to take part in the day’s festivities and to learn more about the people she is meant to rule. Though she is youthful in appearance, she should not be underestimated. Queen Elizabeth I is intelligent, quick-witted and does not suffer fools lightly.

[This is slightly outdated, as Her Majesty is no longer a brand-new monarch. I also wish to note that the character name as currently listed on the Faire’s website is missing the suffix “I”.]

Jonathan Handley :  Sir William Pickering – Nobleman

Well educated, well bred, well connected. William Pickering has studied at the best schools, spent time among the French court, and is a good friend of Queen Elizabeth; but surely he would never let those things go to his head. He is still a man of the people, with his finger on the gilded pulse of the court.

[The character name as currently listed on the Faire’s website is missing the “Sir” prefix.]

Dana Micciché :  Katherine Champernowne, Lady Kat Ashley – Lady in Waiting

Appointed governess, tutor, friend, and confidante, Lady Kat Ashley ensured that her Queen had all the necessary tools to rule England. Well versed in astronomy, geography, history, Latin, Spanish, Italian, and Flemish, this unassuming woman is also trained in the art of swordsmanship, axe-throwing, archery, and caber tossing! Think you know a little about a lot? Lady Kat knew it first!

Joe Penn :  Jacob Perry – Sheriff of Mount Hope

He loves putting away bad guys and solving mysteries. The only mystery he cant solve: how to grow up.

[I would like to note that one, as mentioned, that character description is from last season; and two, the character name as currently listed on the Faire’s website does not actually say “Sherrif”. While it is probable that Jacob Perry is, at this point in universe, still a member of law enforcement, that is not currently guaranteed. We shall see.]

And now, let us jump to the new characters, who have neither descriptions nor even occupations listed.

Leigh Ann Hamlin :  Penelope Devereux, Lady Rich

Katelyn Shreiner :  Carmen Southwark

Jeff Wolfthal :  Bruce Muir

[Now this is interesting, because in 2015 Jeff played a character named Finlay Muir, a Scottish prisoner of war (whose character description I can, surprisingly, supply if so requested, despite only attending once that year, because of reasons).  My suspicion is that the character will not be lifted wholesale, but will have distinct similarities, and also be related.]

Adam Shepley :  Diggory Applebottom

[I am gonna cross my fingers real hard that this is the grandson of Diggory Applebottom of 2017, because that will enable me to continue to interpret this in the same continuity as 2016-2020, which I have frankly been reveling in, as continuity and canon are my absolute jam.] [Sidenote, I’m still salty that character descriptions were not made public for 2017.  And 2018 and 2016, but especially 2017.]

Alex Stompoly :  Sir Walter Roderick Kensington
