#actually now that I think about Arcane that makes it kinda sad

So what are my thoughts for Arcane season 2? Well from what I've seen in the trailer, I think almost every character in the series is going to go through a massive shift, starting with caitlyn in the first season caitlyn was calculating smart not rash (okay not rash enough to wage full on war, but rash enough to let a criminal out of prison) she was new to the scene but she knew that she didn't want war with the undercity, but now in a fit of blind revenge she's going to war anyway

And by the looks of it Vi's right along side her she's given up on Jinx its even the first lines of the trailer, she starts out fighting along side the enforcers, along side caitlyn, but we see her off on her own broken, this most likely because she's finally seen just how far caitlyns taking things.

However the biggest change of this season is going to be Jinx, in the first season Jinx was crazy, but things are about to take a turn i mean sure on the surface we see her bombing the city leading a revolution piloting an airship while looking deranged but looking deeper does she really look completely insane.

Personally i think she looks kinda sad, i mean sure they show her looking completely done with it all ready to blow the world that's wronged her apart, but there's something deeper I think we're going to start the season with Jinx truly regretting what she's done, she's going to panic as the floor gives away beneath her and that will be her tipping point the point where there's s small possibly of her being reached, but there's no one left to reach her no one left willing to try, caitlyn wants her dead, Vi has given up on her, Silco is dead her hand, she's alone, alone except for sevika who will most likely use her to rule the undercity Jinx will be forced back into believing what she's doing is right

Until eventually she's going to snap, she's going to see that she has nobody and she'll be exactly who they think she is and she'll be more broken than ever.

But never mind all that the real thing that i think the arcane trailer is showing or more accurately hiding is the enemy. Okay hear me out we all know that season 2 just like season 1 will be releasing in three separate arcs each obviously show casing a separate story of the same season, now while Netflix has released three separate posters for said arcs they seem to have only given us one trailer, now if you look the trailer like that you can see the story breaks of the arcs, in the first part they show a clear enemy jinx, Vi and Cait are trying to take her down, the second the people of the undercity as they rise up but near the end there's nothing each shot fired each punch thrown even jinx threatening to burn it all down unlike the beginning of the trailer we aren't shown the enemy, this concerns me because who are they fighting, am I reading into this is it still Jinx that's the enemy or is caitlyn and Vi fighting each other or and what is most likely is there a new enemy something so feared that it actually makes them all fight together in some strange twisted way and if so what, i mean im actually clueless I've never played the game or gotten into anything else part of this universe so i have no idea what they could be up against.

Okay I'm sick can't draw it but I am gonna stream of conciousness post about FNaF Bloodborne AU (by character) GO!!!

Mikey: The whole being a zombie thing makes sense with the Hunter's Dream or whatever so I can see him being connected to that. Beast's embrace people are immaciated and stuff maybe the zombification is beasthood even. I can see him being a friendly NPC or like the guy you play as (IDRK what I want this to be yet). Quality build baaaybeee. Tonitrus cus of the shocking thing maybe he gets the Beast Claws if I go with the werewolf angle.

Charlie: I can see her being the level up lady but she's still the freaky unsettling puppet- maybe in like one of those ornate victorian doll dresses. Maybe she has a Lady Maria thing going where you fight her ghost in the nightmare relm or whataver and the puppet is just a hollow representation and nothing like how she was. Ghost boss Charlie had to be freaky too- big tentacled kin monster like Nightmarrion.

Henry: Gehrman kinda. He's your mentor. He seems pretty alright. You slowly discover that he's actually not that great and you have to kill him now but it's still sad cus that's you're dad. Flamesprayer n Boomhammer cus BURRRNNN!! BUUUURRRNN!!! He totally built the uncanny Charlie doll too kinda like he does in the books. If I had to pick a faction to put him with prrobabbly the Powder Kegs.

Bill: I'm torn between him being part of the Choir (cloying facade, religious imagery) or part of Mensis (balls to the wall, no eyebrows) but they both have child death and horrid science experiments going on and they ARE in a conflict so maybe he's just two-sidesing that lmao. He pretends to be an arcane build (casts tiny tonitrus every so often) but he tends to just beat you to death with the Amygdalan Arm (baby limb ((he kills babies)). I think he gets Henry to mechanise beasthood for him and he yells about the glory of the machine till he kills you. I always forget real actual ghosts are canon to Bloodborne too maybe I could do something with that IDK.

University was such a big reality check for me. It really humbled me in terms of my intelligence, what I’m willing to do to have a stable career, what I’m willing to do to satisfy my parents, etc. I honestly think I didn’t consider my own wants at all. I just didn’t have time or energy to not live in the moment. I think I picked up a pen and really drew maybe 3 times in all of those 5 years. What kept me going was thinking about how even though maybe I’m not smart enough to be an engineer, I’m definitely disciplined enough. And I pick things up fast. I like working in a team of people to do something engaging for my brain. But I dunno if it’s enough. I don’t think I could do this for the rest of my life. what kinda clicked for me today is I was watching the documentary on the making of arcane and I was like oh, I wanna do that. I want to do something artistic, something related to storytelling. I want to create something really beautiful. I don’t think that’s what I’m doing right now.

Like I can think of so many examples where I had real passion and fun doing art. I used to create assets for avatars on this website for free. I used to do free commissions. I’d spend hours and hours drawing anything I could think of in my sketchbooks, fanart and original characters and comics. Pretty sure I’ve cracked Sony Vegas, photoshop and toon boom like 2-3 separate times as a teenager. I had a whole ass job as a teenager doing graphic design. And I just stopped? I took school so seriously and turns out I’m probably like 90 iq anyway.

Maybe in a few years I’ll follow my dreams and go back to school and learn French and join an animation studio. Maybe even just a year from now. I need to meet people first I think. Or maybe take a course after work. Maybe planning it out first and figuring out if I’m willing to do the work and take the risk is a better idea. It’s not like I hate my job, but knowing that I had a dream and I let my parents and the people around me discourage me and talk me down from following them just makes me really sad. I was a total coward. I still am, but maybe not as much. In all fairness, I was being pragmatic. I was totally dependent on my parents for everything and it would’ve been a very very difficult journey to do that without anyone’s love or support. Not that I have it now either, in fact I probably have less, but I’m more independent now which makes a big difference.

I don’t wanna give myself false hope which means I actually have to act now. I’m gonna get a car soon. I’m gonna try to express myself through art again. Hopefully I enjoy it as much as I used to. I don’t wanna do the stable thing anymore.

Love to imagine if my personal games were actual play syndicated situations. Not as in the ordeal of technology, building a following, and the pressure of wanting to be as cool and good as professionally trained improv folks. But as in having other folks in the fandom to make art and theories and love on the shenanigans with me. Not even so much for my own characters as for my friends’ characters and the story overall. I want people making sad animatics of how we sunsetted Huck when his player switched to Mags after our one shot was brought back by popular demand. Heck, I can imagine folks being really hyped to go back to Sin Valley and then the drama of a new player and two new characters vs me keeping Relic & SIR HAIIES also sticking around. I got into the game from my gf telling me about her game so I kinda got to be her fandom and she’s been mine- I imagine that also being known more widely and people noticing we both made a Puss in Boots type character and someone making a 20 minute video essay chewing the walls comparing Relic (little clockwork automaton with a touch of Reepicheep Syndrome, attracted to glory but declines a plum job because it’s offered in a high pressure way and he is a kitty, they play a rack of wooden hand bells, remembers a sadder past than he may actually have but talks about it to nobody as what they believe happened includes believing it was his fault) to Simon (tiefling poetry bard whomst has a real life binder of poems to work from, technically what he philosophically is is far more complicated, the opposite of Just a Lil Guy) and finding connections I can’t see because I’m too close.

Now we are in a game together and I’m sticking it out because I love getting to play with her, tho I took a while to feel like I was in the game and I’m not as connected with it as I am with other gems I’ve played. Upside: I am playing a squishy himbo and fully am at peace with when he eventually is facing a tough situation and throws himself onto the grenade for the rest of the party. Like, I don’t have a backup character for that setting, but I think the one I have now should die. He should die in battle in a slightly dumb way ideally and his untimely loss will galvanize the party in a way that they don’t quite have yet.

I want people trying to chart how I went from Tondri “can I eat it?” Arcane trickster & reluctant heir, to Relic the calliope beanie baby, to Peat being made of rocks but so soft.

I am sure I have posted before about fantasy animatics for what was the finale of my first game. Shipper on deck for Tondri x our cleric, the bard battle, “I drugged you all!” Just… so much good shit. I wish I could share that.

ARCANE AND LEAGUE OF LEGENDS LORE SPOILERS AHEAD.

Don’t read this if you haven’t read League’s lore before and don’t wanna get (possible) spoilers for Arcane.

     This is pure unadultered copium, but I can't stop thinking about Arcane and how they made Jayce's story kinda parallel Viktor's lore (https://universe.leagueoflegends.com/en_US/story/champion/viktor/) specially with 'nobody believing in him', just like no one believed Viktor had created Blitzcrank when a professor presented him as his own [1]; and his hearing for using magic and endangering citizens which could have resulted in vanishment from Piltover, just as Viktor (likely) had a hearing with the 'college masters' where they censored him for violating human rights on free will which did result in him getting expelled and vanished [2], two moments which seem to be pivotal in his arc. Side note: what hurts the most about the first parallel is Viktor was actually willing to risk everything he has to prove their theory (which Jayce had laid the groundwork for), without, as he says, neither a namesake nor a patron to back him up; but Jayce did not defend Viktor's claim of having creating Blitzcrank despite Viktor having specifically asked for his help [3]. bro.

     [I'm gonna be very honest here and admit that I'm kinda mixing and matching parts of the lore with parts of Arcane. They changed a bunch of stuff about these two (I think the most out of all the characters?), so this just might not be accurate at all. Off the top of my head:

1. How they met (at a Progress Day party vs. Viktor going to examine Jayce's laboratory's remains).

2. A TON OF THINGS ABOUT HEXTECH. I'm not an expert on League's lore so take this with a grain of salt, but from Jayce's story it is implied that hextech was already a thing when he started at the academy [4]. In-lore, he does experiment with a Shuriman crystal which contained massive amounts of energy [5] (which sounds exactly like the one they use in Arcane), but he ended up using a shard of it for his hammer and not much more. He didn't even get the crystal himself [6].

3. Jayce being a massive fucking dick. Seriously, I remember hating lore-Jayce so fucking much. I was firmly on Viktor's side just out of spite lmao. Arcane Jayce seems to not be as unfriendly as his lore counterpart is (at least for now), and actually doesn't mind explaining himself or interacting with people. He actually seems to show emotion and not be an arrogant little dude.

4. Jayce's mom and everything that happens to both of them in the snow straight up wasn't in the lore.]

     Where am I going with this fucking long-ass ramble? I wonder what they are gonna change in the story. I'm so fucking curious about it. We know the ending's not gonna be pretty, because they'd have to change Viktor's entire character if it was. But I do find it very interesting how they had Jayce have this hearing and I'm wondering if he's gonna rat Viktor out in Arcane, since he now knows what it feels to be a disgraced scientist with everyone questioning your intentions and sanity, experimenting with supposed forbidden or illegal artifacts/knowledge/whatever with the purpose of saving lives... which was what Viktor was doing when he got expelled.

     I just kinda hope it won't be as sad as I think it'll be. I feel they are gonna change a bunch of stuff, but I have no idea if this’ll make their eventual fight less or more sad. As I said, it’s pure unadultered copium.

Hai hello, I saw yalls account and really liked the works and am wondering if I could request an Arcane matchup? I am female, she/her so preferably with male characters but I really don't mind any (kinda had a sexual awakening last month and I think I might be bi sooo... also if possible please don't matchup with Jinx or Ekko since they are still children post-time skip and I am over 20, okay thank you).

A few years ago my MBTI was an INFP but last time I checked a few months ago I turned INFJ?? if I had to choose, I'd stick with INFJ as most of my personality tests and my life path number always lead to me being an idealist and it kinda resonates most for me with my beliefs and all. I'm an Aries sun, Leo rising and Scorpio moon so you know am a quite passionate for all sorts of things and it always ends up with me in tears. I cry really easily too because it's easy for me to empathize, wouldn't go as far as to call myself an empath but I really genuinely do put myself in other people's shoes and consider others before I act. I really really love music lots of different genres (except country, just not my vibe but I do love folk music). I also really love reading, mostly non fiction now but I used to love reading fiction and poetry. I also used to write lots of poetry. I like being surrounded by lots of greenery and flowers and plants but I also love being bigger cities. I love love love animals and would cry watching sad animal videos and happy animal videos. My top love languages are words of affirmation, quality time, and physical touch.

Okay, spoilers beneath the cut because I have some issues with Rise of the Titans.

Tales of Arcadia is one of my favorite series ever. It handled the "Kid is the chosen one" situation brilliantly, every character had depth (even characters like Steve, Eli, the teachers, etc). Theme was expertly handled with each part of the series. Destiny, heroism and sacrifice for Trollhunters; Family, duty and home for 3-Below; Legacy, prejudice and family (again) for Wizards. Every season brought me to tears, made me laugh, made me fear for the safety of the characters and want good things for them after watching them sacrifice over and over again. It is a comfort show for me and always will be.

Now, the movie...

So, I don't think it was bad. I also don't think it was good, unfortunately. The animation took a bit of getting used to after bingeing everything else leading up to this, but I can't deny it was incredibly beautiful. It was especially nice to see places other than Arcadia and Akiridion-5. It started off strong with the train fight, and admittedly there were a lot of scenes I quite liked during the movie. But, just the scenes. I liked moments, but overall it didn't come together quite as well as the shows did.

The biggest factor is likely time. I doubt making this a movie was the initial plan since I know production companies enjoy snubbing out strong series for various reasons. Honestly, I was surprised we got an "ending" at all based on the trends of recent shows being forced to wrap things up prematurely. Even Wizards felt rushed compared to the others and as a result a lot of interesting concepts were brushed over quickly. I mean, I for one would've loved to see more Camelot "filler" shenanigans since those less plot-heavy episodes that we had throughout Trollhunters and 3-Below helped us explore the characters and grow to love them, and we didn't get quite as much of that with Douxie, Archie, Lancelot, Charlemagne, etc. But I digress, this post is supposed to be about the movie, not Wizards.

So yeah, I think Rise of the Titans should've been a show rather than a movie. We could have more time before Nari is captured, focusing on the "where are they now" of all the characters after the year we skipped. Jim gets to cook and eat human food after losing that passion when becoming a troll, adjusting to being human again! Maybe him and Toby talk about Barbara and Stickler being together and how it's kinda weird (Toby could compare it to having conflicting feelings over his Nana dating an alien). Krel and Aja have a call about how it is being the Queen and Steve interrupts because he misses Aja. Perhaps we hear Eli in the background doing something related to the "Secret weapon" and the call gets cut off quickly because this leads to a small disaster on Aja's end that she needs to go fix. Claire is practicing her magic with the help of Zoe while Douxie is off with Nari. NARI AND DOUXIE INTERACT WITH EACHOTHER AND WE ACTUALLY GET TO SEE IT! (Like, I know that they were travelling together for a year and that that is why Douxie is sad when Nari dies, but it didn't impact at all outside of empathy because there was no emotional investment on my end towards their friendship). But yeah, we get to see what's going on with everyone, and then perhaps this first episode ends with the reveal of them being ready for a plan of sorts (luring the arcane order and cutting off their magic. That wouldn't be revealed though). Cut to the Arcane Order in their super secret clubhouse saying they're close to finding Nari and you get a decent cliffhanger.

Episode 2 would start with the train fight and go fairly the same way. We see Jim struggling with fighting with no armor. Or perhaps he has akiridion armor, but it's too rigid or keeps malfunctioning (doesn't fit, so to speak). Only difference is that Jim's arc wouldn't be about whether or not he's still the trollhunter, because we've been through that already and he knows. I could get having moments of doubt, but his full on denial was kinda out of place after everything he went through. Instead, it could be that he feels useless due to now being a burden in a fight. Or perhaps instead he's wrestling with guilt. He's blaming himself since the arcane order got the seals due to them trying to rescue him. Maybe both? Maybe he even misses his troll body and feels that he's too weak now. Yes, he's still the trollhunter, amulet or not, but he's feeling less and less capable of answering this particular call, and that bothers him. He doesn't want to be a burden after all. Fight ends with the train crash, arrest, Douxie swapping with Nari, all the same.

Now, this is where things would go very very differently. Have more time before Douxie and Nari switch back. Let the Arcane order monologue a little more. They want to reset the world because the balance has been shifted? Cool! Tell me more! Did they used to try to get along with the humans? Did they try diplomacy in the past only to fail due to the stubborn humans, and that's why they've decided to take drastic measures? Or if not, explore why they believe they're the ones allowed to decide the balance is off. Is it because they're powerful? Or how long they've been on Earth? Did they reset it in the past and thus know through experience? I don't mind not knowing, since not everything needs to be spelled out for the audience, but there was potential to make them characters rather than obstacles, and it wasn't really utilized to its full potential. Allow Douxie to pick their brains a little instead of immediately swapping him and Nari back and only succeeding in delaying things a few more hours. Hell, if it was a TV show I honestly would've had one or two episodes before doing that while we address how that initial failure (and the fact that magical creatures/aliens were revealed to the world) affected everyone.

Maybe I'll go through and like, actually plot out episodes and stuff, but since I only just finished watching, here's just some various things I'd change:

-Get rid of that whole Steve pregnancy. That was just out of place and rather than the "comedy" breaking the tension, it shattered it completely and distracted from everything. If you wanna explore his father-based character arc, maybe have him and Aja discussing the fact that now that she's queen, she'll need heirs. And maybe Steve isn't sure he could be a good dad due to his history with paternal figures. You could even have it that he's taking care of Nari while her and Douxie are switched, and that leads to a situation where he helps her out and realizes he may be a better dad than expected. Or perhaps Blinky gives him paternal advice. Or Strickler. Or even BARBARA AND JIM like, Steve couldn't be worse than Jim's dad, and letting Steve and Jim bond over that would be nice. There was so much potential, but instead, Steve was reduced to an out of place running gag instead of getting a resolution to his character arc. And hey, if you wanna keep the whole male akiridions give birth thing that's cool, but it's gotta be done in moments where it won't distract. Or, you could even have it be that it means Aja and Steve need to adopt because uh... she's inorganic and he's organic? His body likely isn't actually built for akiridion childbirth despite the movie glossing over this fact? And maybe Steve has mixed feelings about someone else being the dad of his kids, but Coach and him talk about how Coach isn't his biological dad, but that doesn't mean he loves Steve any less.

-GIVE DOUXIE MORE SCREEN TIME! Seriously, had this been a show he would have the most potential for character growth out of everyone. His series was the shortest, so really all he got was a confidence boost and moving past needing Merlin's approval. But there was so much to explore with him still. What was up with that extreme burst of magic after Merlin's death that was never brought up again? How has he been mentally handling singlehandedly guarding Nari against the Arcane order for a year? Once he and Nari switch back, does he feel guilt over not being able to protect her? "Merlin wouldn't have failed like that. He kept her safe for thousands of years, I lasted a little over one". Perhaps, in his constant desire to prove himself to the people he cares about, he takes risky moves to try and save Nari again and make up for his mistakes, similar to how Jim was acting in the movie. Eventually, when he and Nari meet up again when trying to break her controlled state, Douxie is apologizing and talking about how he wants to make things right. He sees Nari as a friend; as family, just as much as Archie, and he doesn't want to lose her like he lost Merlin. He doesn't want to lose anyone else (which would make Archie getting stuck in the other Trollmarket, and Nari's sacrifice even more painful later on if that still happened).

-Krel, Eli and Stewart also needed more time. I get it was a movie, so time was short, but still. Krel's entire thing is that he grew to see Earth as his true home, and we didn't get to address the fact that he was immediately at risk of losing it at all. Not to mention the sheer amount of stuff he'd built for everyone. Like, could you imagine an episode where, to break up the tension (in a proper way, not a weird pregnancy way), in the midst of everyone trying to figure out how to stop the titans, Krel has overworked himself fixing and managing everyone's tech. He has to spend a day resting and disasters ensue as no one knows how to fix any of the stuff he usually manages. Like the tech keeping Camelot afloat, for example. Stewart and Eli could be the ones that end up stepping up to fill the Krel sized gap for the day.

-And I know that these fillers would lower the tension a bit, but like, having the titans need to charge up after awakening (like, absorbing elemental energy or something), or perhaps making the Arcane Order have to collect certain things to break the seals in the first place that they had on their fortress but lost when that was destroyed , or any other kinda obstacle to give time between the train fight and the Titans waking up would give time for less plot-heavy, more character focused episodes. And even after the titans wake up, they were moving super slowly and walking across the planet. It's not like they'd be short on time despite the movie making it seem like walking from china to america was a short jog at most.

-Don't give Toby the amulet. Don't get me wrong, I love Toby very much and literally bawled out loud at his sacrifice scene. But like, it made no sense to give him the amulet? Jim doing everything again with years of Trollhunter experience would help solve a lot of problems from his first go around (and I'm not fully on board with the whole time reset in the first place. Resetting to the start of the movie, or even just the fight with Bellroc would be better). Jim knows the burdens of being a trollhunter first hand, and you really think he'd be okay dumping all that on Tobes? Toby, the guy completely content with being the wingman and helping the people he cares about. Toby, the guy who never worried about not having a grand destiny up until the movie. The guy who in his biggest dreams was a Duke, not a king. I think Toby was well aware of how important moral support is and wouldn't see it as a lame superpower. But even if he did, in a tv show they could explore that in a way where he comes to learn just how much that moral support does for his friends. And if you still want his moment of glorious sacrifice (because I count that as one of the well done moments), then do that! But rather than going back in time to save everyone, make it so they sacrifice the stone to turn back time a bit. Risk their victory to try saving Toby. Have them fight Bellroc together instead of it being just Jim, because it's trollhunters, not trollhunter. It always has been, always will.

-And if you're like "But if they don't go back then Strickler and Nomura stay dead!" Then how about they don't kill them for shock factor in the first place? Have Strickler badly injured instead, because by god Barbara deserves some happiness. And think of the potential scene of her treating his wounds, and the two of them think about how things have changed since that visit to trollmarket when they were both hurt. About how Strickler stuck around, and when Barbara thought she'd lost him it scared her. How she's sick of almost losing everyone she cares about. She could talk a bit about Jim's dad then too, and it could be revealed that Jim was outside because he was going to check on them, but stopped when he realized they were talking. And then later on, he asks about his dad, admitting he overheard, and we get that conversation they had in the movie. And if you keep the Nomura sacrifice, give her more of a moment ffs. Like, she deserved better! Have the death be a sacrifice to save someone else instead of just "oops I got caught and I'm in the sun now". Make it deliberate. Make it her decision after a life of serving others. Finally, she got to be the one in control of her fate, and she chose to protect the people she cared about.

There's so much more I could say about this and the potential that was killed by the lack of time, but this is getting long and I should probably try actually doing the work I need to do today.

Edit (Because this just popped in my head and I need to add it).

THEY WERE LITERALLY AROUND THE ROUND TABLE! THE NINTH CONFIGURATION (which like, screw that there are more than 9 heroes here to save the day) WERE THE NEW KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE. They were there to protect the world, and like... did the bond between Lancelot and Steve just not exist anymore? Did that get timeline erased too? Could you imagine Steve fighting to protect the world, doing his best to protect the people he cared about so that he never loses someone like he lost Lance again? He gets to keep his promise to carry on the legacy of the Knights even after they died. THE POTENTIAL WAS THERE!!! THE SET UP WAS THERE!!! BUT NO! WE GET MPREG STEVE INSTEAD!!

Thoughts on Dark Fortress #2

(This post is under a cut due to spoilers.)

So late with this one! some stuff irl was keeping me really busy and hyper-distracting me lately, but it’s finally over now so I’m back on my bioware bullshit. :D

Overall there were a lot of beautiful or awe-inspiring scenes in this issue, and a lot of great, meaningful / poignant character interactions and moments between characters. It’s pretty impressive actually how much was able to be packed in. I posted some of my favorite panels here. also omg! the action sequences! the big reveal! the ending!! woww

cool scene-setting, panned out shot of Neromenian and behind it, the Dark Fortress, to immediately pull you back into the world and ‘where we left off’. the combination of ruined dead trees, red lights, lightning and fire/smoke is very atmospheric and hints at what’s ahead

“From this... city, if we can call it that” is a sick burn and reminds you that the Qunari are technologically more advanced than most of the rest of Thedas, from their cannons to their aqueducts

! last issue there were big ‘You haven’t seen the last of Tractus!’ vibes, naturally, but I didn’t expect him to escape by stabbing and killing the Qunari using a chair-leg..!!

the last panel on the first page of Karasten is really good. the way it’s colored, the way it’s lit, the light and shadow, the fiery backdrop, cinders floating, the details of his expression.. 👌 it also makes me think to the possible future, to DA4 when mainland Thedas may be continuing to face the entirety of the Antaam

in Vaea’s acrobatics scene on the bridge, I know rationally that she’ll be fine but couldn’t help but worry for her. again I like how they don’t shy away from showcasing Vaea’s specific abilities. also the attention to detail - you’d think some rocks are just some rocks, but it highlights the risk she’s undertaking that if she falls it’s into rough seas which could dash her against the jagged rocks :’S. Vaea, gooooo!

Fenris’ “Enterprising girl” line has big “Clever girl” meme energy :D

my heart can’t take Fran and Autumn leaning over the edge after Vaea in worry ;; or Aaron looking back in concern over his shoulder ;; or Fran’s tender reassurance ;; or Autumn’s Worried expression ;; the care and bonds which have grown between this group of characters ;;

notice Aaron starts drinking when Vaea’s away from them and they’re beginning to grow worried about her safety. the poor man’s nerves and stress levels

Fran touching the vegetation while she’s considering if she could use her magic to open the entrance from the outside is a nice touch

did Marius leap in front of Fenris and Fran there when the entrance opened?? damn, he’s quick. and the three of them look all scary and formidable here ready for combat. notice how the curve of the door and the spikes that go into the ground, and the composition of this panel, make it look like they’re standing in front of an opened dragon’s maw? ‘teeth’, a rumbling ‘roar’.. some nice foreshadowing here.

the reunion panels are so cute. Autumn’s lil tum as she jumps and Fran and Fenris’ lil smiles of relief and at Autumn’s reaction to seeing Vaea, then a rare happy beam from Aaron.. feel.. the love ;__;

red lighting in the tunnel sets a dangerous, dramatic build-up mood

👀 more info on Fenris’ past, on the specifics of the process which gave him his markings. in the panel where he says that it took a long time, his shadow on the wall behind him reminds me of the shadow of his past that has dogged him for so long :(

love Vaea’s faith in Aaron and her sense of humor. also I don’t know why, maybe it’s because Vaea met Sebastian, but her “Maker, no!”, although in a completely different and light-hearted context, reminds me of Sebastian’s “Maker nooo!” at the end of DA2 hh

the reference again to Hawke, who Fenris saw haunted by what they tried to do - save their mother - and couldn’t :’(. also with the shadow in this panel, here’s another person struggling with the shadow of his past qq. this is later emphasized again in Aaron when he continues to talk about his past and in the panel is a chain and manacle. smart visual metaphors, a must in the comic medium with limited space

It’s about their impact” - he’s misty-eyed here as he thinks back to Ostagar.. does this line btw seem almost meta to anyone else btw? :D it feels like a meta reference to the experience of DA players and PCs, who are always having to deal with the impacts of their choices

I wanna point out that I was right on reading issue #1, when I said “I’m positive that in panel 2 here, it’s the exact moment when he sees Cailan die” ;;

So Aaron is also a veteran of the Battle of Denerim

Aaron’s stories were him trying to inspire people to make a change, or him trying to convince himself of that. and now here’s Vaea, inspiring Aaron with her words in these panels. the little guys can make a difference! in the world of Thedas, you don’t need to be a big bombastic hero or a Player Character to have an impact

👀 lore-drop! so ancient elven arcane warriors used lyrium-infused swords. this seems to confirm the sarcophagus is an ancient elven artifact, no? makes sense, wasn’t it said that the sarcophagus’ design was based on the architecture/outfit-design type elements of a specific faction, and that this was done intentionally? it looks kinda ancient elfy in make, right? also about the lyrium-infused swords of the arcane warriors, well well well.. remember that the Evanuris and the ancient elves mined the bodies of Titans for lyrium, for power and to use as a resource. here’s an example of that use

lore-wise what are the implications here? when Fenris’ ritual was being undertaken, the sword and the sarcophagus were bombarded with magic, fire spells. in this one they aim to have the dragon bombard it with fire-breathing. is it just fire that makes it work/powers it, or is there magic in dragonfire, in dragons? it reminds me of “Your heart beats with the old blood, as well. Where do you think it comes from? It sings of a time when dragons ruled the skies. A time before the Veil, before the mysteries were forgotten. Can you hear it?”

and separate to the above, some speculation based on the cover of Issue 3: the piece of metal looks like a broken collar coming off Shirallas, like the one there was on the cover of Issue 2 coming off the dragon. also he’s all bulky now with draconic talons/claws (reminds me of in-world legends of Reavers who dug too deep of their own power after drinking dragon blood and whose bodies consequently began to manifest subtle reptilian traits actually). I’ll be interested to see what results of this allusion between Shirallas and the dragon!!

Two weeks. It took Yoongi all of two weeks to feel completely comfortable enough with Y/N that he called her home.

It scared the hell out of him.

It was concerning to him how easily he allowed himself to be completely defenseless around her.

He was almost ashamed to admit that it took him barely 3 days before be comfortably laid his head on Y/N lap, allowing her to pet him. Yoongi especially liked when she would scratch behind his left ear as they would watch tv at night.

The routine was natural for them both to fall into. Y/N would wake up early, early enough that Yoongi would still be asleep when she left for work. Y/N would always leave a small note for him, along with anything he needed for the day. At 6pm, Yoongi would greet Y/N with a small smile, taking her coat or bag or food if she bough some home.

Yoongi made a passing comment once that he is able to cook. Y/N put him to the test, taking him shopping with her and bought everything he’d need to make dinner. Yoongi was happy to move around, cooking before Y/N finally arrived home to taste the food he had made for her. He couldn’t hide the concern on his face as Y/N took a bite into the steak and pasta, keeping a straight face. She only put Yoongi out of his misery when she completely devoured the rest of the food with a little dance as she ate.

Besides the few times Yoongi had seen Y/N in the mornings as she’s woken up, make up-less and hair in all directions, it was the most beautiful Y/N had been in his eyes. Smiling around the food he had made, her shoulders moving to a random beat in her head as she appreciated every bite.

From that day Y/N and Yoongi agreed on a rule, Yoongi would cook dinner every night except Saturdays. They both agreed to order take out.

Thanking every star, she could see in the dying light of the sun as she finally pulled into the driveway of her home that it was Friday. Her arms and legs felt like jelly, having been walking around most of the day, carrying stacks of paper, practically running around. Fridays were always busy at the company she worked at, like everyone had a sense of urgency to finish so they could get home quicker.

And she couldn’t blame them for that, for she had a reason to come home now.

That very reason was currently standing at the open front door, a smile on his face and a cup in his hand. This cause Y/N to pretty much run towards him, almost too happy to accept the hot drink from him. Taking a needed sip of the hot tea, Y/N allowed Yoongi to help her out of her coat and bag. Hanging it as he shut and locked the door, ushering in the warn out Y/N.

“Busy day?” Yoongi asked as he directed Y/N to the couch, sitting her down by her shoulders.

“I think I’m going to just quit.” Y/N sighed dramatically, leaning back against the couch as she kept the hot tea close to her body, smiling as she saw Yoongi walk away from her, shaking his head. “I don’t want to work anymore.”

Yoongi was used to this, how every Friday Y/N was ready to quit after a tough week. It was always something different each week and yet he secretly liked how hard working she truly was, knowing she’d never actually quit.

“Well of course you can quit.” Yoongi moved around the kitchen, saying what he always said. “I mean, we can sell the house and move in with your parents. I’m sure they’d welcome us both into their home.”

“You know what…” Y/N sat up, looking into the kitchen where Yoongi could see her. “I’m suddenly sad it’s Friday night. I wish I could work tomorrow.”

Yoongi let out a laugh, catching Y/N’s eyes before going back to what was in front of him as he saw Y/N relax back into the couch out of the corner of his eye. His ears atop his head flickered, moving to listen to Y/N, he was always watching her in some way. He wanted to always keep her safe, especially when she wasn’t in his arms.

“So, what’s on the menu tonight?” Y/N asked leaning her head as far back on the couch as she could to carry her voice towards Yoongi, hot tea resting comfortably against her chest.

“Stew.”

“What type of stew?”

“Stew that will be done when it’s done.” Yoongi caught Y/N’s eyes again with a smirk. “Why don’t you go have a bath. Relax for a while and then it’ll be ready when you get out.”

“Min Yoongi, are you taking care of me?” Y/N sat up straight, looking into the kitchen at the man in question.

“And what if I was?” Yoongi kept busy, his hands and eyes never stopping on Y/N as she suspected a blush was rising on his cheeks.

“Well…” Y/N stood, moving into the kitchen, and watching Yoongi work before he finally turned to stand in front of Y/N as she reached up, pushing hair from his eyes. “I’d hope you know I appreciate it. Even if I don’t like when other people take care of me.”

“And that’s why I need to look after you. No one else will.”

“Ah Min Yoongi…” Y/N sighed happily, sitting the almost empty mug on the counter as she walked away, a dreamy look on her face. “My knight in shining armour.”

Yoongi just shook his head at just how dramatic Y/N was, sway her whole body as she walked towards the hall to the staircase. Yoongi had already laid her pyjamas out for her on her bed, everything ready for her. Y/N had done so much for him in the 2 weeks he’d known her, doing small things like cooking for her, cleaning for her, laying out her clothes for her was less then what he wanted to give her. For now, it was all he could do for her.

It took Y/N all of 45 minutes to come back out, Yoongi counted. Well, he watched over the food and it took 45 minutes, and so did Y/N. so it wasn’t like he was actually watching, waiting for her. It was just a… coincidence.

Yoongi continued to tell himself as he watched Y/N walked towards him. The short pyjamas maybe weren’t the best idea but, Yoongi knew she’d never be able to wear anything long or heavy. Her exposed legs were the only thing he watched, starting with the pink checkered shorts, and ending in her pink slippers.

“Is dinner ready yet?” Y/N’s soft voice caused Yoongi to snap out of it, his eyes finally moving up to meet hers, only to be meet with a towel on her head.

“Why haven’t you dried your hair fully?” Yoongi met Y/N just before she got to the kitchen, moving her hands so he could dry her hair for her. “You’ll catch a cold.”

“I’ll be okay.” Y/N voice was slightly muffled but Yoongi could still hear her.

Yoongi just shook his head, smiling as he continued to help dry Y/N’s hair; “So, is dinner ready?”

“Yes,” Yoongi couldn’t help the laugh that escaped his lips. “Dinner is ready.” Yoongi pulled the towel down enough to see Y/N’s eyes, covering her nose and mouth. “So why don’t you go sit down. The tables set and I’ll bring you dinner.”

“Your spoiling me Yoongi.” Y/N said to Yoongi’s back, finally discarding the towel as she sat down. “Oh also, a friend of mine is coming over tomorrow.”

“Okay.” Yoongi placed the pot between them, sitting opposite Y/N on the small table.

“I’ve been meaning to introduce you to her but after we got home, well… we’ve been kinda busy.” Yoongi listened as he served Y/N first. “I hope you don’t mind?”

Yoongi just nodded, preferring to just listen as Y/N talked through dinner. It wasn’t anything big, but it was a small happiness in his life now, listening to Y/N talk about her day, about something she’d seen or heard or ate. She involved him completely into her life.

As he served Y/N more food he couldn’t help but think of his brothers back at the shelter… he hoped they were as happy as he was.

You had always wanted to work at a bookstore.

Ever since you were an angsty twelve-year-old who only found solace in books, it had been your dream to work amongst the written word.  Too bad Chapters had shitty hours.

That didn’t matter now, though.  GDT Arcane Books had excellent hours, a positive work environment, and the nicest couches to ever exist.  They also had a painting of Guillermo del Toro.  You weren’t sure why, but you loved it anyway.  There was only one thing about the small bookstore that you loved more than the Del Toro painting, which is saying a lot, that painting was amazing.

Your coworker, Hisirdoux Casperan, was very quickly becoming your favourite human being in the entire world.  He was sweet, selfless, and he cared about other people.  He made you laugh more than anyone else, and he was there for you when you were stressed or anxious.  Also, he had a cat.  I don’t even need to tell you that cats are amazing.

The bookstore was the perfect place, and it only got better as the seasons changed.  Fall in Arcadia was beautiful, fall in Arcadia in a bookstore was even better.  GDT began to feel like a second home to you, so much, in fact, that you developed the habit of leaving things at work.  It wasn’t your fault, things like this happen sometimes, and that’s okay.  As long as you don’t forget anything too important, you should survive.

And then you forgot something important.  

It wasn’t anything major like your wallet, but it was necessary to keep you warm in the cool weather, especially at night.

And it was night.  And it was cold.  And your favourite sweater was still in the bookstore.  And you hadn’t realized until Douxie had locked the doors and you’d both gone your separate ways.

In short, you were a little bit screwed.

You wrapped your arms around yourself, shivering slightly.  This was fine.  Totally fine.  As fine as a dog drinking coffee in a burning room.  The wind blew, shaking the branches on the trees and raising goosebumps on your skin.  Lovely.

You braced yourself against the breeze, trudging forward, determined to make it home and have a hot cup of tea.  

And then you heard a trash can fall over.  Extra lovely.

The last thing you wanted was to deal with a Goblin or Shadow Mephit or something.  You walked faster.  There was another, louder crash behind you.  You sped up again.  You were not dealing with this tonight.

There was more noise from behind you, the universe clearly disregarding your wishes for a calm night.  At this point, you were running.  There was a limit to how much crap you could put up with, and it was a limit you were fast approaching.  

Then Douxie flew into your side, bringing both of you to the ground.

“Douxie!?”

“(Y/N)!?”  

Whatever had thrown Douxie at you roared from the alley.  You couldn’t see it, but you could tell that it wasn’t anything good.

“You have to run,”  your coworker said, getting to his feet and offering you a hand up.

“What?  No, I’m not leaving you-”

“I’ll be okay, (Y/N), but you need to get out of here!”

Even if you wanted to, you didn’t have time to get out of there.  What appeared to be a large stone spider emerged from the space between buildings.  How this thing didn’t wake up the whole neighbourhood, you had no idea, and you couldn’t stop to think of one because the arachnid was now attacking.  Douxie stood in front of you, shielding you with his body, and some kind of blue forcefield.  

“(Y/N), GO!”

You ran, but you didn’t go home.  Instead, you searched for something to fight with.  

Monsters and magic were not a new concept to you, not when you lived in Arcadia.  You’d gone through whatever the hell that troll-thing was, an alien attack, and several other crap-tastic world-ending events.  This was just one monster, and you had Douxie, who was apparently a wizard on your side.  This was not the problem you were expecting or even a problem you wanted, but it was one you could handle.

It took a minute of searching, but eventually, you found the perfect weapon.  Someone had left a folding chair outside.  It may not be an enchanted sword, or a serrator, or a gun, but folding chairs had done wonders for you during the troll-hell, and you figured it would work for you now.

You grabbed the chair and rejoined the fray.

Douxie was not pleased to see this.  He really liked you.  You were sweet, snarky and charming, and he really liked all of your quirks.  He enjoyed your company and wanted to spend more time with you.  He knew you were a strong person, and that you could take care of yourself, but he was really hoping that you wouldn’t have to deal with this.  He knew it would kill him if anything bad happened to you.

But you lived in Arcadia, where bad things always happened, and you knew how to deal with this.

“EAT CHAIR, PUNK!”  you yelled, bringing the chair down on whatever part of the spider you could reach.  This didn’t make the spider happy, but you were able to avoid any and all attacks while repeatedly bashing the thing with your folding chair.

The wizard was at a loss for words.  

While he wanted you to run home, he knew there was a high chance that you would stay, and a higher chance that you would stay and try to help him.  The chair, however, had not been a part of these calculations, so all he could do was stare and watch as you kicked this thing’s ass.  No one could blame him, it was very impressive and very attractive.

And kick-ass you did.  You dodged attacks and landed hits, your folding chair proving to be as useful as ever.  Eventually, you managed to wedge your weapon between the pincers of the arachnid, distracting it momentarily.

“Douxie!  Now!”

Douxie snapped from his haze at the sound of your voice.  He sent a wave of magic at the thing before opening the gate to limbo underneath it.  You and Douxie were left staring at the ground where the thing had fallen through.

“Nice one,”

“Thanks,”  the situation set in for both of you.

“Hey, wait a minute, what was that?”

“Oh, fuzzbuckets, are you okay?”

The two of you hesitated for a moment, held at a stalemate.  You wanted answers, he wanted to know if you were alright.

You took this time to take in details you hadn’t noticed while beating up the stone spider.  Douxie had some kind of band or cuff on his wrist.  You had never seen that before despite working with him for a few months now.  It was new.  And it was pretty cool if you were telling the truth.

While you examined the cuff from where you stood, Douxie noticed that you were unharmed, but shivering slightly.  You didn’t have your sweater on.

“Aren’t you cold?”

The question knocked you out of your thoughts, but fortunately, you were focused enough to answer, “Oh, uh, yeah, I forgot my sweater back at the bookstore,”

“Oh,”

Without another word, Douxie took off his hoodie, walked over to you and wrapped it around your shoulders.

“There you go, that should warm you up,”

You gingerly grabbed the edges of the hoodie, wrapping it tightly around your shaking frame.  He was right, it did warm you up, but as your eyes ran over the tattoos on Douxie’s shoulders, you thought of a few more ways he could help you achieve that goal.

“Thank you,”

“Of course, love,”

The wind blew by again.  It wasn’t so bad this time.

Then you realized how late it was.

“Oh, god, I should be getting home, I-”

“Let me walk you,”

“Are you sure?”

“(Y/N), I know you can defend yourself,”  he cast a cautious glance towards the discarded folding chair, “But it would make me feel a lot better to know you got home safe,”

Your cheeks warmed at the sentiment.  It was nice to be cared about.

“Ok.  Come on, I’m this way,”

The walk started off in silence.

Douxie’s hoodie was soft.  His tattoos were really nice.  It was still kinda cold, but Douxie showed no signs of feeling the temperature.  

But it was too quiet.  You needed to talk about this.

“Hey, Doux?  You mind telling me what that thing was?”

The wizard sucked in a deep breath, “To be honest, I don’t know yet.  I’m still figuring that one out,”

“Huh,”  you supposed that was a valid answer, “Let me know when you do,”

Douxie smiled for a moment.  He told you that you’d be the first to know.  Then his face fell.  He almost looked scared, but there was nothing around you to be scared of.  You were a bit confused, but your attention stayed on Douxie.

“(Y/N), until this is all sorted out, could you avoid going out after dark?  I don’t want you getting hurt,”

That was a bit of an understatement.  If you got hurt at all, it would kill him.  If you got hurt by something he could have protected you from, it would destroy him.

“I’ll do my best, but you know I get off from work late,”

“Then I’ll walk you home,”

“I’d like that,”

You were a bit surprised by how determined he was to keep you safe.  It was really nice to have someone watching out for you for a change.  It made you feel warm on the inside.  

After that, the conversation turned to normal things.  Music, books, anything other than stone monsters with no name.  Douxie did ask where you learned to wield a folding chair, but some things are best left to the imagination.

You were actually sad when your house came into view, something you never thought possible.  You’d been enjoying your time with Douxie so much, you didn’t want it to end.  Unfortunately, you did not control the universe.

“Well, this is me,” you took off the hoodie, which was also a sad event.  You held it out for Douxie to take, “Here-”

“Hang onto it,” the wizard said, taking your hands under the hoodie for a moment, “At least until you get your sweater back,”

You both pulled away, blushing, 100%.

“Thank you,”

“It’s no problem, really,”

There was another moment of silence.  You both had so much to say, but no idea how to say it.  

“Well, I’ll see you tomorrow,”

“Tomorrow,”

Douxie watched as you opened the door to your home, and stepped through the door.  A surge of energy ran through him.  He had to say something, anything, or he would regret it.

“(Y/N)?”

You spun around to face him faster than either of you thought possible, “Yes?”

Douxie paused.  He didn’t think he’d get that far, to be honest.  But you were watching him with anticipation, waiting for him to speak.

“Just… stay safe, okay?”  it wasn’t exactly what he wanted to say, but it was close enough.

“I will if you do,”

The smile on your face was the best thing he’d seen all day.

He was so distracted by the curve of your lips that he didn’t even notice that you had moved to stand in front of him.

“Thanks again, Douxie,”  and with that, you left a small kiss on his cheek and entered your apartment, leaving Douxie a blushing mess on your doorstep.

“Douxie?  Are you alright?”

“I’m much better than alright, Arch,”

The entire dinner scene hit me like a bolt of lightning while I was working on this fic. It started with Beau’s outburst, and then Veth’s willful denial and subsequent fit, and I built the two scenes around that.

Diving into particulars….

“Uhm,” he said, intelligently, but quickly recovered and flashed his friends a smile. “It is most impressive. Certainly a step up from a tiny hut.”

A direct reference to the name of the spell. Originally it was Leomund’s tiny hut. I have no clue why in 5e Wizards decided to 86 the attribution names on so many spells like Otiluke’s resilient sphere and Tasha’s hideous laughter. Things like that always made me curious about the (what I assume were) PCs the spells were named after. I had thought maybe it was because the characters who diegetically invented them were specific to one setting, but in that case I don’t know why Bigby’s hand is still Bigby’s but Evard’s black tentacles are no longer Evard’s. I don’t like it. As an aside, Widowgast’s Nascent Nein-Sided Tower is, mechanically speaking, Mordenkainen’s Magnificent Mansion. Anyway. Moving on!

It was delectable that Caleb wanted to impress him.

This boy hungry and not just for soup

Flustered, Essek tried to fend them off, but it was Caleb that did him in. It was always Caleb. The human took a large roll from his own plate, broke it in half, and offered one of these parts to Essek, who tried his best not to choke.

“You need to keep your strength up, ja?” Caleb implored him quietly.

The steady hand that accepted was a point of pride because it very much wanted to quake. The Kryn weren’t bread people, but...did he have any idea what this gesture would mean in Rosohna? Any inkling at all?

This is another one of those places where I delight in playing to cultural differences. What I’d had in mind for what that gesture—breaking food into two pieces and offering half to someone—WOULD mean in Rosohna was a bit nebulous, as I like to keep the reader guessing a bit and let their imagination fill in the blanks; but my rough idea was that it’s a courting gesture that signifies “I can and will provide for you, even if it means less for me.” An expression of selfless caregiving and an offer of partnership. Not wholly unlike a bird bringing food to a prospective mate.

And actually it’s a little bit funny coming from Caleb, who has fuck-all to his name but his name, when Essek is a rich bitch who answers directly to the Bright Queen.

Not that he was about to say it out loud, but he was a quick convert to this whole bread thing. To say that it won him over would be an understatement. That seemed to be a recurring theme here.

I imagine if I’d grown up never really eating bread and was introduced to it in adulthood I’d be like “Where have you BEEN all my life?!” But also: the bread is friendship, the bread is the Mighty Nein, the bread is communion in the spirit of sharing rather than politics and appearances and power plays—things he thought he was fine without until they were foisted upon him.

Somewhere in the course of the multiple conversations going on at one time, Jester got an Idea, as she was prone to doing. He became increasingly aware of her talking about kissing, of all things, and this culminated in her shouting above the din, cheeks flushed purple though he hadn’t seen her touch any wine: “I have an idea you guys! Why don’t we all go around and say how many people we’ve kissed?”

Jester is the most wonderfully convenient deus ex machina if you ever need to insert an awkward or embarrassing conversation among the Mighty Nein, because this is exactly the sort of shit she would do.

Jester leaped up and slammed her hands onto the table. “Caduceus you’ve never been kissed?! That’s so sad!”

The firbolg was unfazed. He merely shrugged and said, “It hasn’t come up and I haven’t gone looking. Not something I’ve ever thought about, really.”

Jester’s tail lashed back and forth behind her like an overstimulated cat. “Do you want me to kiss you?”

Fjord went a bit wild-eyed at this. Caduceus smiled gently and said, “No thank you.”

Three things about this part:

1) Jester’s tail doesn’t get NEARLY enough mention in fic! If I’m playing (or writing) a character with a tail you can be damn sure you’re gonna know what it’s doing! Makes me wanna play a tabaxi tbqh.

2) Cad’s “No thank you” is the sum total of his sexuality, lol. Jester was raised in a pretty highly sexualized setting, didn’t really get out much before she fled Nicodranas, and can be pretty naïve, so she doesn’t really get the whole aroace thing; but it never crosses Cad’s mind that this would be “abnormal“ or ”sad” in any way—it causes him no distress, as it shouldn’t. This is yet another “Same planet, different worlds” moment.

3) Fjord is physically restraining himself from yelling “JESTER WHAT THE FUCK” lmao

Veth kept picking at it. “So you’re um. You know. Into the fellas?”

Beau snorted. “I could’a told you that months ago.”

“Yeah you could’a!” Veth pouted with a self-conscious curl to her shoulders.

I saw a comment on Tiktok that said Veth was being borderline homophobic, but that wasn’t my intent! It’s just that she inherited a certain blind spot for male queerness from her player, and as hard as she’d been trying to encourage Caleb to hook back up with his female ex, it never occurred to her that he had a male ex, too—and given that they’ve been so close for so long, she’s feeling pretty self-conscious about the fact that she never figured out that Caleb is bisexual in all that time, as well as kind of upset that no one—Caleb especially—told her. She’s having a moment of “Why didn’t I know this? Did you think it was going to change things between us? Did I make you feel unsafe?” And also a little bit of “Okay well, now I have to get him to hook up with TWO people AT ONCE because my boy deserves threesomes 😤”

Jester went goggle-eyed at him. “You’ve only been with one person?” she exclaimed. “But you’re like a hundred years old! And very handsome. I would have thought you’d get like, all the ladies.”

Ladies. Right.

Veth might not be the only one with a certain blind spot.

Beau gave her a funny look, snorting. “I dunno, he seems like the kinda guy who turns down those offers left and right.”

..…But Beau’s got his number, for more than one reason. She’s got super gaydar, for one, and has him pegged as the type who’s very choosy about his partners (also mind you, this was before demi!Essek was canonized by WoG, so I was still rolling with my hc that Essek got around when he felt like it).

The uproar was instantaneous. Everyone—almost everyone—started talking or shouting at once. Beau’s voice rang out among the din with, “HOLY SHIT ESSEK FUCKS.” Strangely pleased with himself, he downed the rest of his wine in one gulp and spent the next few minutes fending off increasingly prying, personal questions until the Nein grew bored with his lack of answers and someone changed the subject.

There it is, the line that spawned two entire scenes!

He was not a war mage, but he was experienced and wily, and he was damned good at what he did, and as long as there was breath left in his body, the Mighty Nein would not fall here.

Joke’s on me, motherfucker literally has the War Caster feat -_-

But like in my defense, that’s just what it’s called in the book. The feat just means that you have either the training or experience to cast well during a fight, which I see as not necessarily the same thing as a war mage, which was my way of saying an arcane caster who is a soldier.

Veth stared at her blankly as if willing herself not to understand. “Caleb? With who?”

She breathed steadily. “...Essek. Caleb and Essek.”

Beside her, Jester squealed and brought her fists to her face.

Veth was less enthused. “WHAT.”

Beau’s mental commentary here is dead on. Veth still doesn’t really trust Essek at this point and has been pretty vocal about that…despite being the one to declare him part of the Mighty Nein? Eh, she’s allowed to have complicated feelings on the guy, all things considered. But I find it kind of comical and very Veth (and very Sam) for her to be all full of zest for trying to get Caleb back together with the frigging Volstrucker who is actively working for his abuser and worst enemy but balk at him hooking up with Essek.

Jester “explained” in a delighted yell: “Caleb and Essek are gonna fuuuuuuck!”

I don’t know, is this too unsubtle to call foreshadowing? The line flowed naturally in the dialogue, but it’s also letting the reader know exactly what they’re in for next, lol.

“...He’s going to break that little elf twink, you know,” Veth said, sounding distant. Seemed she was having some difficulty processing. Not too surprising, considering how adamant she was about wanting their wizard to hook back up with his old flame, the fucking Volstrucker. “We’ve all seen his dick.”

This was 100% taken from Sam’s little throwaway line “It’s above-average” but it turned out to serve two purposes other than reminding the reader that all of these people have seen Caleb naked:

1) It’s yet another thing Veth thinks she understands about him but doesn’t. Caleb’s a top like Dalmatians are purple and if you disagree then I respect your right to be incorrect ;)

2) That said, it is, in fact, foreshadowing for the sequel, in which Essek experiences a great deal of frustration. (I haven’t touched the damn thing in weeks, feels like; I’ve been too busy with work, being exhausted from work, and being in a tizzy about my upcoming surgery.)

Fjord blurted out, “I’ll join you.”

Poor Fjord has had such an uncomfortable night!
