Do you guys want more posts about some of the rocks I have?
And why is the answer yes, you really want to learn about pink dolomite?
#anyways I'm having a thought. because brain rot. and obviously techno is sooooo rhodochrosite.#but also he is so corundum. and not in a 'ooh ruby red stone like blood' way. but yeah also that#but in the way that most people think it's a pretty stone to be cut and polished and made by people into jewelry when the primary use is#actually as an industrial material

Thinking about how when I was in middle school I thought I was the most original person in the world for coming up with the idea of cave elves in some intense political fantasy story I was writing only to find out that I did not in fact come up with the concept of cave elves and the high political drama of elves bring displaced and crammed into cities and discriminated against was literally exactly the setup of dragon age origins
#i was soooooooo mad when i played dao the first time bc i was like FUCK MY IDEA ISNT ORIGINAL ANYMORE#my world was basically dragon age but closer to the industrial revolution and with cave elves instead of regular elves#they were displaced from the caves they lived in because the surrounding cities wanted to mine for raw materials bc of the new high need for#metals due to the changing technology#so after displacing the elves they then hired all the elves as extremely underpaid and exploited miners#my story took place one generation later so now theres a bunch of cave elves who were born in the city and their perceptions of home are#different from their parents bc theyve only ever known the caves as a source of money and also torment#but thats all just the backdrop for the actual story that would be taking place which was all about learning to trust and finding a personal#identity once you heal from your traumas

There's something very strange about how people online, usually Americans it feels like but I've seen Brits do it too, talk about natural fibres that makes me feel like we're living in alternative dimensions. In my world and the life I live, cotton is literally everywhere clothes are sold. I can walk into a nearby supermarket and get cotton clothes. Even the fast fashion retailers near me sell cotton. Most of what I can buy locally is either 100% cotton, or a blend that's largely cotton, with increasing amounts of viscose. Even linen, come summer I can easily find linen or linen blend shirts - a bit more expensive, sure, but in the same spaces.
My washing machine has three settings for cottons and one for wools. (And yes, I entrust my handknit items to whatever washing machine is available, and have always been fine.) If I go second hand shopping, it is easy to find cotton, though I will often also encounter viscose and not-infrequently other natural fibres. My iron has settings for cotton/linen, wool/silk, and synthetic. I grew up wearing cotton! It's familiar to me!
Like, it's really weird to me to treat all four 'standard' natural fibres (and their semi-natural cousin viscose/lyocell/tencel/rayon etc) in the same breath, as the same level of difficulty to find and live with and use and care for. I'm always kind of shocked that people seem to be living in the Plastic Dimension and I think yall in there should be mad about it, but it is also a really recent phenomenon and I think it's worth remembering that 'natural fibres' aren't a monolith and they may be more available and easier to handle than you think.
#i don't think our societal reliance on cotton actually says much good about us#it came to prominence with slavery and huge amounts are still produced via slavery today#but it is at least not a sweaty ball of plastic#we need better regulation of the textile industry so that companies are discouraged from plastic#encouraged to prewash their fucking fabric#penalised heavily for using slave labour#or for not being able to account for their supply chain in ways that could hide slave labour#and we need the basics of material culture to be taught in schools#but in the meantime it starts with people refusing to just accept the plastic dimension you know?#the only place where i would find it hard to find natural fibres (cotton) is. online.

i'm realizing very quickly that i have a raging hard on for media that explores the detriment of war and weaponry, dives into the hypocrisy of human tribalism and false dichotomy, and heavily criticizes capitalism--of course with the pretty no filter horror bow<3

full offence but all the people clamouring for reeve to quit hadestown are pissing me off so much, like y’all really care about actors huh, wanting an actor to quit their job in a highly competitive industry during a fucking ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, like if y’all don’t understand how bad it is rn for a privileged cishet white actor like reeve then i can’t imagine any of y’all talking like this can extend any empathy towards actors in far worse positions then him rn showing your fucking asses fr
#my twitter dms are limited rn so i can’t bitch about this to friends but i’m genuinely so fucking pissed off about this#like accuse me of being a stan all you want cause this has nothing to do with people’s thoughts on the quality of his performance#imo it’s just really shitty to be doing this during a time when we should be supporting actors like#like truly broadway fans have no fucking critical thinking skills i’m sorry#like i’ve been in a lot of different fandoms and spaces and broadway/theatre fans are truly some of the nastiest fucking people#and most of them don’t give an actual fuck about the material conditions of the industry they claim to love so much#just want to bitch and moan

I feel like I’ve been posting a ton lately (because there’s a lot goin on!!!!) but FOR THOSE OF YOU WITH TWITTER: Figmin XR just published our AWE competition video!!!
❗ PLEASE like/retweet it if you want to help us with our company mission of using AR (augmented reality) to reduce material waste. ❗
we’re an indie team of 4 people competing against large companies, so we’re relying pretty much entirely on word of mouth to spread the word about what we’re doing. we’re also competing against the AI and web3 (crypto) crowd, which are unfortunately still big in the tech industry
we’re competing in multiple award categories at AWE and will be relying on public votes, so literally any and all visibility helps us immensely right now. 🙏
I’ll be posting the video to @figminxr later, so don’t stress if you’re not on twitter. I’ll be sharing more info about the competition in the post as well!
#auropost#i'm pulling out the exclamation mark emojis so you know i'm serious lol#i am a little bit serious though#there is a non-zero possibility that figmin could singlehandedly transform the way we think about material objects#i don't talk about this much since 1) we're humble indie devs and 2) it breaks my brain to think about#but there is a reason we went on the meta world tour and got into the disney family gallery#and there is a reason every new headset manufacturer recently has reached out to us directly#and also our app is starting to be implemented in classrooms for children AND adults#like a fucking ARCHAEOLOGY team is using figmin as a learning tool#it's international too!!!!#and the reason it's getting so big is that no one else is making anything like this#and if we can prove to the xr industry that the general public WANTS tech like this#that's the next step towards getting companies to make it actually affordable#and once it's affordable.......... you will be able to Download A Frisbee#and just. anything else you want.#MAN!!! what a wild thing to be able to say!!!!

I do feel like I have a Point to being kind of a contrarian hater around bg3 because like I don’t actually hate it and there are a lot of great things it does but there’s a lot of things about it that REALLY REALLY bother me and also. like. I get larian isn’t the biggest studio but um. dnd is owned by wizards of the coast which is owned by hasbro. and uh. you don’t even need to look that hard for the awful shit they’ve done. so basically I think it’s important to bring up some things within The Hottest Big Game that I believe leave MUCH MUCH MUCH to be desired. anyways with all the Fantasy Game Stuff it supposedly challenges and twists (I have no idea what people are actually talking about when they say that, I guess it’s because they give NPCs something to do?) it sure seems happy to keep on with the weird traditions of If No Boob How Woman and Woman In Armor Means Tight Metal Jumpsuit and Fantasy Racism that’s just some people being mean to you based on the fact you’re a devilspawn and not like an actual system of oppression based around giving socio-economic power to certain people at the expense of others. and also drow are still evil. they do that really cool fun thing (/s) where people are Fantasy Racist to drow and call them all evil and horrible and yet they’re Right to be doing that because every drow is evil except you can theoretically play as One Of The Good Ones and maybe meet a couple more? great work guys. also no fat people you can’t make a fat character even though you can make your skin green and have horns and a tail. you can play a fucking dragonborn but you can’t be fat. also you only get like a few face presets and they’re different based on if you pick elf or half elf or human or whatever with no crossover???? which really drops the ball considering a lot of games will at least let you match a different nose to a different set of eyes. it is genuinely a big letdown for a game that’s supposedly all about Player Freedom where you can have pink skin and horns but you can’t be fat and if you play as a woman you can be muscular but only in the way where you can still be curvy and if you’re a guy you can be muscular in a twunk way and if you’re a poc trying to make your character reflect you then good fucking luck lol make do with like the 1 face preset you get I don’t even wanna hear about how hard it is because games have been letting you play with facial structures using sliders since forever. also I specifically built this PC to run fast and have good storage I got like 3 other people who Know Shit About Computers for video games and art and I spent a long time and a lot of money making this stupid thing I KNOW it runs well. so why the fuck is my game still so laggy what is taking up all the damn space I know it’s not the character customization. like is it just me or
#also not to be a dick but I don’t know how much abt the fantasy genre and dnd in general that it actually changes#maybe I’ve just been spoiled by playing Real Dnd for too long like#dude I just played a session on a planet covered in the rusting ruins of industry#and whoever was there was splicing animals and people and making clones and making weapons out of crazy materials#that can change properties if you alter their names#and we got attacked by giant squid vultures (squltures) and a gargantuan octopus eagle (octeagle)#and the cleric picked up an axe that liquifies everyone#like it’s made of corium. it’s literally corium#it was in a room with skeletons. it dealt like a ton of radiant damage to us. and he took it#because apparently that’s the 20 wisdom thing to do??????#oh also we’re here because tiamat possessed my lizard and then when we got here she cloned us.

People on this webbed site make such a big deal over being Elite Media Enjoyers and Analyzers who Understand the Art Form of Television and yet. According to that poll over half of you have not even HEARD of a show that’s absolutely crucial to the development of the modern television landscape. You cannot spend any time seriously reading and learning about television - whether from an entertainment history angle or from a TV-focussed film theory angle - without encountering a mention of Oz. So like. Y’all are really telling on yourselves with that one
#yes I know there’s only 500 votes so far. I hope that ratio changes when they get more votes#but like. that’s such a huge sweep I really don’t think so#whatever. you don’t have to be intense about tv history ig#but come on. come on. if you’re going to think of yourself as a TV Expert at least do the legwork to learn about the industry#and the art form and it’s history and maybe dig a little bit into the many many film theory essays that have been written#maybe appreciate the fact that - like other disciplines - there is actual material to study if you want to think of yourself as an expert#whatever. it’s fine I’m fine it doesn’t actually matter

Wake up babe, Disney is crapping on its own properties by quantifying over qualifying and unnecessarily milking its content dry for the sole purposes of cash-grabbing knowing that it will face 0 marketing consequences for doing so….. again…
#The lion king#salt#the lion king 2019#Disney#live action#animation.#Seriously what the actual fuck#I thought that this was a hoax but goddamn#The prequel I could kinda get and I was willing to let that slide even if it did turn out to be a flop#But someone actually looked at this unimaginative emotionless Disney remake from almost four years ago#and thought that said remake opened the doors for a cinematic universe#Because Mufasa sounding like a tired old man and Keegan Micheal Key and Eric Andre being given unfunny material to work with is apparently#Grounds for expansion?#Then again Disney’s remaking Moana and making a Toy Story 5 so I don’t know what the fuck to expect#And even Dreamworks is hopping on the bandwagon with the HTTYD live-action remake#In short the entertainment industry is really taking a step backwards.

Hey anyone remember when CG Greenblatt criticized Nickelodeon's working conditions on Harvey Beaks on Tumblr and it got cancelled? After a very strained apology from him?
As much as I hate people just sharing screenshots instead of linking I'm sure glad that what Dana Terrance said before having to play damage control for Disney got archived.
CG Greenblatt's rant got scrubbed from the internet aside from one article mentioning the apology while not making what he apologized for clear so I sound like a conspiracy theorist for bringing it up.
He deleted the fake apology too. Wish it still existed to reassure me and others that I didn't just make it up... But I'd delete a forced "apology" after the heat died down too.
#personal#negative#you would be surprised how easy it is for a big corporation to remove info#at least the one cartoonbrew article I mentioned survived#even if it's really ambiguous#I dream of finding a reblog of the rant floating around and that tumblr didn't delete it entirely#thank you Greenblatt for showing me that I don't actually wanna work in the shitshow of the animation industry#no matter how fun they make the workplace look in PR material

its important to note when talking about ethics in fashion is that we can make clothes out of any textile
#like people need clothes yes#but there is no reason there has to be a human or animal - life or wellbeing cost to it#we dont NEED leather#we dont NEED furs and pelts#we dont NEED long silk fibers#we dont NEED acid bonded textiles#we have so many possible textiles and materials and finishes to utilise#the pig fetus gloves are kind of a weird choice#^ actual thing btw#wool has no reason to be a slaughterhouse industry#giving a sheep a haircut shouldnt also include murdering it the moment its hair gets stiffer bc it reached maturity#anyway uh having a normal one in fashion school

From what I remember the og pic was overexposed (see how the background is just searing light?) so the dress in the picture came out brighter than it looked in real life, and the differences in perception are partially due to your screen brightness.
If you see white and gold, you can turn the dimness all the way down (and block out the background if you're still having trouble) and it's easier to see the blue and black colors of the dress
If you see blue and black, turning the brightness up makes it easier to see the gold and white
Bringing this bitch back in this here 2023
#now that i really look at it the dress is actually pretty ugly#i mean its very 2015 in the worst possible ways#why was the fasion industry obsessed with sewing several horizontal strips of material together?#and the lace is just? thrown in there? at random?#0/10 stop trying to make us buy your scraps#also! it looked better in white and gold! (a 1/10 instead of a 0) a color that the company didnt sell until AFTER it went viral!#how embarassing honestly

I really wish that people had a better grasp on what The Average Person's Life was like pre-industrialization. If you're living in the global North the odds are good that your life is, in fact, better than a medieval king- yes, even with the political stuff- and would make your ancestors cry wild tears of envy.
The things that suck about your life are things that suck about the baseline human condition (at least since the invention of agriculture, but that's 10,000 years of humanity). Yes, including all the political stuff.
The baseline human condition is "being terrified of losing the harvest and starving", compared to that, losing a job is no big deal. (It's bad, it can be life-upendingly bad, but it's still not "you are guaranteed to die if you screw this up" bad for most people.)
The baseline human condition is "getting kicked around by a tin pot dictator", whether that be a king, a baron, a warlord, or a chief; it's taken centuries of social technology to get the world to a point where that's Not Normal.
The baseline human condition is "losing multiple siblings and/or children at a young age to diseases that are entirely preventable". That's a shocking tragedy now. The baseline human condition is "being in the pathway of said tinpot dictator's wars of conquest" and having to deal with soldiers' pillage, looting, and worse (even if they're nominally on your side). That is, again, a shocking tragedy-- it still happens, and happens in way too much of the world, but no one is going to tell you that it's normal.
I'm not saying that we can sit back and rest on our laurels. We can't. I've been calling the pre-industrial world the "baseline human condition" for a reason- unless you're very, very careful, that's what your society eventually reverts to. It takes a lot of people working very hard to make sure you don't have to live at the baseline human condition, and if you start slacking on that, you start backsliding into it.
How we treat each other- and how we use the technology, material and social, that we've developed to make things easier- matters. We can make the world even better than it is now. We can also make it significantly worse. The choice is ours.
...But if you know that you can reliably have food regardless of the season, you don't live in fear of a random attack killing you tomorrow, and you can listen to music on command whenever you want? You do actually live a better life than a medieval king. Because even kings and emperors were much closer to the baseline human condition than a random farm worker in Bumfuck, Iowa is today.

Yandere academic rival who really, really wishes he could just get you out of the way.
Dead dove Do Not Eat! MDNI ! NSFW !
Tw. Dubcon/Noncon, bullying, academic pressures, blackmail, oral sex, explicit photos, mentions of baby trapping, yandere, stalking, forced relationship, AFAB reader
Elias had a certain level of respect for you.
You both attended a prestigious university crammed full of students vying to make connections and nab a cushy position for themselves in the future, and while it was easy for him to be on top of the social and academic scenes, he knew you had to work a bit harder. He came from a very wealthy household, one where needing something was merely a concept and not something he ever actually encountered. You, on the other hand, definitely come from a lesser background than him and his circle. Your scholarship and just above the average academics seemed to have pushed you into a good spot to be hoisted into the same realm as him.
But he didn't really think of you much at first.
You were some nameless face that wasn't really worthy of being around him. Maybe he would catch glimpses of your hair, or someone woud mention you in passing and he'd pretend to be intruiged.
It was really when you started to be compared to him of all people that he started to really pay attention.
You were smart, cunning, and ruthless when it came to your assignments. Just like him. Normally he worked overtime, paid industry professionals to help review his papers, his study materials and poured blood sweat and tears into his academics. And yet you somehow managed to be on his level with less than half the resources. It drove him up a wall because if you were nearly as good as him now, then what could you be like if you had the chance?
Elias was like a man obsessed after your sudden, explosive rise in the minds of professors and lecturers alike. He spent hours studying, shirking his friends and other responsibilities just to make sure he was still better than you, to keep you in your place.
He started to focus in more on your personal life, too.
Where on earth did you come from? He's half convinced that you were genetically designed in a lab to piss him off. But the more he glares at the back of your head when you're not looking, the more he's transfixed. You're like a black hole, or some kind of other abyss like metaphor. Fuck, you had him writing poetry in his head. He hated poetry. He hated you. Or at least, he would really like to hate you, but he couldn't. You had the same amount of drive as him, maybe even a little more. No matter what he did, he was forced to acknowledge you, forced to be aware of every twitch of your hand or every flutter of your eyelids. To him, you were something that demanded attention, even if it was taken from him through gritted teeth.
The only reprieve from his spiraling was the fact that you felt the same way about him. He liked to imagine that you were just as obsessed with him, sitting there in the late hours of the night writing down equations with him as your sole motivator.
But then he finds out that he's not even occupying your mind, and he loses his shit.
"Oh Elias? Yeah I guess he's fine. Huh? Rivals? What the- no way I just want good grades. He has nothing to do with it haha."
You just said it in passing when someone teased you about it, and he knew that he shouldn't linger on your words for too long. If anything, it should make him feel better. You had nothing against him, so it meant everything was fine, right? Wrong. It was so wrong.
Elias was seething, nearly throwing a tantrum. How could you not even think about him. Him! You were some piddling, pathetic excuse for a human being, and you had the audacity to not even regard him when he spent nearly every waking moment thinking about you.
He was fine just watching you from the corner of his eye. He was fine knowing that on some level, the two of you had a respectable if not distant relationship. Just because in some aspect, he wanted a piece of you all to himself. And if you weren't going to let him just have a little bit of your life, your passion, your drive, he would just take all of you instead.
He follows you into the library late one night. You're sitting there, glowing in the warmth of the nearest lamp while your pen makes soft scratching noises against the paper. You look pretty. You've always looked pretty to him. You don't notice him as he approaches, and he feels any vestiges of doubt or restraint float away. Even now, as he loomed over you, you didn't even spare him a glance.
The library was empty. He made sure it was so before hand, and he's glad he did. The quite air was shattered by the sound of him shoving you over the priceless lacquered wood desk. Your eyes go wide as you take him in, and his hands fly up to your throat.
"Augh! What are you-?"
"Shut up." He hisses and narrows his gaze. Your pulse is racing underneath his fingers, and he has half a mind not to crush your windpipe into oblivion so that he can be the last one to feel it. "You have no idea," He mutters and leans in close. Your frightened breath ghosts over his skin, and he shudders. Now that he thinks about it, this is the first time he's ever been so close to you. It feels so right. He never wants to be away from you again. Not when you look so damn alluring with tears rolling down your cheeks and your clothes rumpled on the floor by his feet.
He wants you like this always, with your twitching cunt stuffed full of his fingers and your cries filling his ears. Soft, wet squelching noises met each of his ministrations, and a cruel, wonder filled grin spread across his face.
"You have no idea how much you've driven me wild," He laughs. It's a sharp sound that grates on your ears. "How much you infuriate me," Each word is punctured by a thrust, by a curling motion that has you gasping and seeing stars.
If this is what he has to do so that you notice him, so you will just fucking care about his existence more than you would any other speck of dust on the street, then so be it.
It only gets worse from there.
Elias takes photos of you. So many. Ones of your crying face, ones of your leaking pussy, some of him shoving his dick past your puffy lips. Once the camera shuttered and they were in his hands, it was all over.
He played the role of your boyfriend after that.
There wasn't a moment where he wasn't hovering over your shoulder, whispering threats into your ears. He gets you to start doing worse in your classes and on your assignments, and for once, he's happy. He finally has your eyes on him, and if you ever try to leave him or say anything, then he'll make sure you can never show your face around here again. Don't worry, though. He's kind enough to keep it so you won't fail outright. In fact, he'll just slip some money to some of the professors so you don't have to do anything other than sit on his lap and pay attention to him while he actually works for the top spot.
Elias takes you out on fancy dates as if it's any way to soothe the sting of having your life ruined. He pays for everything and practically preens under the feeling of finally getting what he wants. He's such a brat, and he doesn't even care about hiding it when he's with you. Part of the reason why he likes you is he can be his nasty, awful and conniving self and you have no choice but to accept it. He doesn't mind if you're reluctant or stubborn. In fact, he kind of likes it because in the end, you still gave in to have a chance to graduate from a prestigious school. And plus, now you're living the high life with him! It's kind of a win win if you think about it.
He loves having you sit on your knees (a cushion underneath them of course. He wouldn't want you to ever actually get hurt) and taking his cock in your mouth while he studies. You look so cute like that, with your eyes all narrowed in mildly hidden frustration, and he loves it even more when he thrusts into your throat. You always make these little spluttering noises that just drive him wild, and he clamps his thighs around your head to keep you there.
Elias who soon becomes the university's beloved model student. He's not going to let anyone get in his way ever again, especially not after he has you to provide for now. After all, he's got plans for you. Once he manages to put a baby in you, he'll know that your future family is secured, and he's got to support all of you. There's no way he can fail now!

Sea Cryptic! Danny AU- Pt. 5
[Pt.1] [Pt.2] [Pt.3] [Pt.4] [Pt.6] [Pt.7] [Pt.8] [Pt.9] [Pt.10]
“So you’re that dead kid everyone’s talking about.”
Danny smacked a trash bag into the purple clad vigilante. “You can pick up the glass.”
“Wait, I’m just here to-”
“Bother me when I’m working? At least the litterer brings me cash. You can help clean or you can leave. Plastics go over there.”
Danny pointed at a pile of plastics, ignoring Spoiler’s bemused look. Hard to tell, really, considering her mask.
“I’ll help clean if you answer some questions!” Spoiler chirped, already moving to pick out the glass in the general trash pile Danny’s managed to gather. He nodded.
“Alright. At least you’re helping. The other one just bothers me and leaves his stuff on the beach.”
Spoiler snorted. “I’m Spoiler. Is the litterer Batman?”
“Sure. I don’t really care what his name is,” which was a complete lie, Danny was a fan. It’s just that messing with Batman (especially after he couldn’t clean up after himself, honestly!) overrode his fan behavior. “But if I catch him leaving shit in the waters again…”
Danny frowned, eyes glowing. He could feel- even with his partial tangibility, the muck of Gotham's waters seeping into his boots. It was not giving 'Live, Laugh, Love' to Danny, and he needed it gone.
“Whatever. They dropped a lot of guns down here. You can deal with those too, yeah?”
“I'm pretty sure that's evidence?!”
“If you could call it that.” Danny plucked away the Styrofoam and the hazardous (more than regular, anyways) materials away from the trash pile so Spoiler could dig through with her gloves without contracting sixteen different sorts of illnesses.
“So, what brings you to Gotham?”
Danny pointed at the water. “Came for school. Stayed because you losers polluted the water with dead bodies and gross chemicals.”
“You go to school?”
“Hey, that’s discriminatory.”
“Oops! No, sorry! I meant-”
Danny waved her off, irritably separating a bottle cap from the crushed bottle. Seriously, what’s the point of putting the cap back on if you were going to throw it in the bay anyways?
“It’s fine. How else am I supposed to learn about the advancements made in the scientific industry otherwise?”
Even if Danny wasn’t too sure that science could sure stupidity, but a halfa could dream, right?
"So... do you just... listen in on lectures?"
Danny stared at her. "What else would I do in a class??"
"Oh. I just thought since you're dead and all, you'd do something more... fun?"
"I mean, I could terrorize the local villains for kicks, if that's what you meant."
Spoiler brightened. "Actually, yeah! That would be helpful! If Mr. Freeze keeps bringing the cold during my latte Thursdays, I'm gonna snap and wring his cold little chicken neck."
Danny snorted. "Alright. I will keep an eye out for this Mr. Freeze." Danny paused. "Hey, tell your friend to come down and help us."
"What- oh. Black Bat!" Stephanie waved her partner down. Black Bat gracefully slipped down towards the bay, casually knocking out two goons gunning for Spoiler.
'Careful,' Black Bat signed.
"Thanks!" Spoiler bounced on the heels of her feet. She swept an arm out. "Wanna help?"
Black Bat tilted her head and, after placing Danny under quick but thorough scrutiny, nodded.
'You can get the salvageable stuff. Anything you can't lift, leave to me.' Danny signed clumsily, placing emphasis on can't.
"You know sign language?"
"I'm not too good at it, I just learned this version."
He knew ghost-sign first, after all.
"Chop, chop. I don't have all night."
----
Danny learned that Black Bat had the skill to knock cans into their designated piles if he threw them in the air so she could kick at them.
"You two can come back anytime."
Spoiler whooped while Black Bat leaned back, smug.
"Wait, tell the litterer he owes me $200. He was short last time."
"...Are you telling me Batman owes you money?"
"Yeah. He might be in financial straights, so I gave him some lee-way."
Black Bat and Spoiler looked at each other.
----
"Hey, so guess what I learned about sea boy!"
Bruce's head swiveled to her with startling intensity. The rest of the clan tuned in.

Hello,Do you have any tips for recovering from internet brain rot? It's like my patience has dried up and if there's a huge amount of text (even about topics I'm very interested in) that I have to read, I get annoyed and just don't interact with the material at all.
I have multiple tips!
TL;DR (Because of course I generated a wall of text): Take a break from the internet, create a schedule for getting yourself used to reading longer texts, take breaks while reading, and perhaps reconsider how you interact with The Internet and the world in general.
Here are the basic "to reduce the brain rot just don't interact" tips:
Take a break. Give yourself time off from The Internet (for these purposes The Internet is the social media industrial complex; clickbait news, recommended videos, social media sites, etc. You don't have to totally check out of email or your local news site, just get away from the huge time sucks). I'd say to take at least one day a week where you're online for less than an hour a day, and to maybe work up to doing a week-long break from whatever the main agents of rot are.
Once you've identified the main agents of rot, give yourself a time limit or set up rules for yourself. I don't let myself look at social media in bed, for instance; no staying up late on my phone, no scrolling before I get up and start my day. I don't give myself a strict time limit anymore, but for a while there I was very firm about "you only get to go online 4 hours a day" with myself.
Don't comment (or at least only share the things you really want to share). If you feel the need to argue, or if you feel pressured into sharing something, don't. Step back, maybe even open the post in a new tab or send it to yourself, and come back later. If you've been thinking about it and have decided it IS something you care enough to talk about, share it. If you look at the tab and feel stressed out or still feel reactive, close the tab and walk away.
Go out and interact with the real world in a non-work capacity for a few hours a week; take walks or go shopping or go out and take pictures of insects. Touch grass so that The Internet is not the only thing you're doing with your downtime.
Here are the "work on reading longer texts specifically" tips:
Set a reading goal for yourself. Maybe you want to read one New Yorker article a week, maybe you want to read all the way through news articles, maybe you want to read novels like you used to in high school. Figure out what your actual goal is and articulate that goal to yourself.
Set up a practice schedule and gradually increase the amount of time you're reading. Don't go from short tumblr posts to a novella, go from short tumblr posts to slightly longer news articles, then to slightly longer essays, then to a novella. You can do this in literal paragraphs if you want to - maybe your goal for your first day is to read five paragraphs in a row, and the second day is seven, and the third day is ten, etc, until you are comfortably reading for longer amounts of time without counting paragraphs. (Try this with books from gutenberg.org; read a classic you haven't read a few paragraphs at a time and if you find yourself going over your paragraph count, let yourself run with it. If you finish a book, good for you, find another one and start again.)
Set up a maintenance schedule. If your goal is to read longer news pieces, try to read a longer piece every week and try to read to the end of every news article you open. If your goal is to read novels or longer nonfiction, try to read a book a month (maybe setting aside dedicated time each week to read, maybe Thursday evenings are book time now). If you find yourself falling back into old habits, take a break from The Internet and do some more rigorous practice for a while.
If you find yourself getting frustrated while you are reading you can also take a break! Read until you get frustrated and then *instead of switching to a different page or closing the article* close your eyes or look out the window or away from the screen for thirty seconds (count 'em! count out the time in your head) and then continue reading. You can also take a longer pause and sit and think about why you're getting frustrated. Is it the subject matter? Is it just looking at this text for longer than a couple minutes (if you are experiencing FOMO because you're reading for another few minutes instead of scrolling, the harder tips at the bottom are going to be important to you)? Are you comfortable? Are you reading this text to procrastinate from something and the procrastination is making you nervous? Are you trying to read to the bottom of your dash and reading a long post is taking up more time than you want while scrolling? Are you bored? Genuinely and very seriously: are your eyes straining and does your head hurt (if this is the case when is the last time you had your eyes checked or your glasses prescription updated)?
Here are the much harder "examine yourself and reassess your reactions to things" tips:
Work on re-training your attention span.
Identify something that you enjoy and find deeply engaging, and schedule some dedicated time for that thing. Set a literal timer (it can be a short amount of time at first) and sit down and do the thing without switching to a different website or opening up an app on your phone. This can be re-reading or watching a couple episodes of a show you like or listening to your favorite album while you sit down and draw. What's important is to spend a longer time focusing on doing something you DO like before attempting to spend a longer time focusing on something you DON'T like.
When you're starting on things you DON'T like, start with things you mildly don't like, or that feel tedious but aren't actually unpleasant. One way I do this is by transcribing poetry; I look up poems that I connect to and I transcribe them into a notebook that I have for that purpose. I enjoy having the finished product, but I don't enjoy the process, so it takes some effort to stick with it. Maybe there is a boring book you have been trying to get through, maybe you need to detail your car, maybe you've been trying to take up embroidery - these are good things to make yourself pay attention to (having music or a podcast on can help, but avoid watching videos or opening social apps)
When you're okay at that kind of thing (doing something not actively unpleasant) work on your attention span for things you ACTIVELY don't like. I don't think you should be a masochist about this, but you should work on being okay with doing unpleasant things for a sustained period of time. All of us have to do unpleasant stuff sometimes, and it's better to be able to pay attention to it for an hour at a time than it is to put it off forever.
This leads into the next Big Tip which is:
Work on being less reactive
Find something that you dislike; I'm going to use conservative talk radio as my example.
Expose yourself to the disliked thing for short periods of time (under ten minutes, maybe under five minutes).
Work on moderating your emotions during the time spent exposed to the disliked thing. If it makes you angry, work on intellectualizing the anger without becoming agitated by it. If it makes you sad, work on accepting that sadness without letting it drag down your mood. This isn't precisely about becoming numb to stimuli, but it is about being more in control of how your emotional reactions impact you.
Analyze the disliked thing. Why does it make you angry? Is that on purpose by the creator of the thing? Would it make someone else angry in the same way? How would you explain the anger to a neutral third party?
Consider responding instead of reacting. Let's say you're seeing a lot of very sad and upsetting things online and it's making you sad and upsetting you. You re-share these things because you don't feel like there's anything else you can do or you get angry when you see people sharing incorrect information, perhaps you argue with people about this. Now try looking at the upsetting things through the lens of point number four. This has upset you; how has it upset you? And once you've thought about how it upset you and have articulated that to yourself, find out what you can DO. I cannot make conservative talk radio go off the air, but I can support the groups harmed by conservative talk radio; thus there is no point in me getting upset and angry about conservative talk radio when I could be helping the people they target instead.
And that gets us to the last big tip which is:
Ask yourself if you are spending your time in a way that is enjoyable and edifying.
We all have limited time in our days and limited time in our lives. If you are finding yourself frequently frustrated online, it's a good time to consider whether you want to be spending so much time online.
If you feel like The Internet has become a rat race in which you can't read more than a few paragraphs without getting frustrated, there's a good chance that not only are you spending too much time on The Internet, but you're also spending it on doing things that you don't particularly like.
A realization like yours, Anon, that you are getting frustrated with any longer texts, can actually be really helpful because it provides a good opportunity to look at what you're engaging with and consider the questions:
Is this something I enjoy?
Do I feel good when I do this thing?
And that's a great way to figure out how to get rid of things that are leading to your background frustration. Maybe that looks like paring down the list of blogs you follow, maybe that looks like unsubscribing from some youtubers and podcasts, maybe that looks like uninstalling apps, maybe that looks like blocking a whole bunch of people and terms on your socials.
I don't think that everything we do has to help us grow as a person or expand our consciousness or anything like that, but I do think it's important to prioritize doing things that you like and doing things that you feel good about.
Like, I'm not doing something *wrong* if I spend an afternoon on Youtube watching drama channels every once in a while, but if I come out of a few afternoons of watching youtube drama channels feeling restless and anxious and like I wasted my time - even if I enjoyed myself while I was watching - it's probably a good idea for me to take a break from drama channels and see if there's something I can do instead that will make me feel better.
ALSO, A NOTE:
You are an animal that requires significant enrichment in your enclosure.
Think about tigers. Tigers in captivity are going to be excited to get high-value treats for any reason. They will eat and enjoy the treats. But if a tiger in captivity is only given the treats and never given any other form of activity to engage with, it is not going to be a happy tiger. If you start putting their treats in a pumpkin or a puzzle feeder or giving them toys to play with, that is going to be a much happier tiger.
Please give your brain things to play with that are more than just treats (though it does need some treats!). Make yourself a happy tiger. Your brain need a puzzle feeder, not a treat button.
