Afraid?

Hmm. You ask a good question.

Why should I be afraid anymore? I have died before, in a myriad of ways. I have drowned, I have wasted away, I have died of sickness, from burning, from being torn apart.

What new experience could come to me?

And besides, it could be the last time.

I could finally sleep, knowing I have been truly happy here in Novac.

If I’m as fortunate as I always have been, I will escape all notice and fall asleep fast.

But even then, I would be thankful to stay awake making somebody very happy until they let me go!

From an outsider’s perspective “He’s my freaking best friend” was the funniest, most insanely untrue statement that Colin could have possibly made about his relationship to Raphaniel. But Lou going “Deli, crushed, is going to avert his eyes...” had me immediately sobering. Of course it’s gonna look like such a blatant lie to us, as we’ve had a front row seat to Raphaniel’s unhinged bullshit this entire time. But Deli is seeing them both for the first time in five years. He didn’t even notice Colin was present until he was literally crawling on top of him to get by. 

And though he’s seen some pieces of Raphaniel being senile as he runs butt-ass naked into a crater, Deli didn’t even consider doubting Colin for a second. There’s just something that’s so bare about these two. They’re the only ones that didn’t build their characters to lie, but even still, the other three make insight checks on everyone else constantly. The other three have a much longer history with each other than Colin and Deli ever did. And yet neither of them have ever questioned the honesty of the other, always taking every word at face value.

It’s true that they’ve never had a reason to lie. But you would think that when your ex-best friend that you parted with on bad terms and haven’t seen in ages says quite passionately that his new best friend is the soggy old man collecting people’s heads, that you would have some level of doubt. Hell, even if Raphaniel was normal or if it was any other person, wouldn’t you still be holding out? Searching for the faintest glimmer that you’re missed?

The way they just trust each other. The way Deli was the only person Colin ever told about his past, despite them parting on hostile terms. The way they watch each other in battle. The way they both immediately wanna stop and talk to each other. The way they care.

[When she's done, she doesn't immediately try to wash it. She just stands and grabs one of the towels--C.B. Craig Boone, Catherine Boone, Carla Boone...]

[sets aside the sandwich plate and leans forward at the edge of the bed, brushing his knuckle against a nasty scrape on her cheek] ...just don't do that again. i don't know what made you do that, but don't make me go after you again. you're ... a friend. i can't ... i'm not strong enough....

[he considers her with a frown] i can't believe you just came back from a firefight where we almost got nuked and you made me a damn sandwich

[she jumps when he makes skin contact. Not really scared, more of a bounce, a startle, like she wasn’t expecting it. Her eyes wander every few seconds but they stay fixed on Boone, glancing up with her lowered chin]

[June glances at the plate, frowning and holding the seat of the chair.] Because… I wanted to. I need to. You’re hungry, right?

[She made the sandwich for the same reason she resigned herself to her fate.]

…June.”

Samuel Garrett backs up against the wall, raising his hands in the air, attempting to keep his control over the situation. “June. You don’t want to do this. Listen to me- you can’t do this.”

June raises the rifle—it’s a little bigger than the one she’s used to—but she remembers what she was told. On the shoulder. Press it against your cheek.

“JUNE! I just told you to listen to me. DON’T YOU DARE- YOU CAN’T-!”

June glances up at Boone for a moment, at the top of the basement stairs, then looks back down at Samuel.

“YOU CAN’T DO THIS TO ME. YOU-“

She fires the rifle, kickback shoving her back a bit. A bullet rips directly into Samuel’s knee. He screams and doubles over.

[He removes a lever-action shotgun from the wall, holding it across his chest and fumbling in a drawer for ammunition before smacking Kimball and June with the butt of it, herding them down a different hall towards a battered metal door he forces open, revealing a rickety set of metal stairs.]

Move. He’s gone insane.
