6 History Related KDramas You Need to Watch
I am a huge fan of historical Dramas. But I believe it is rather hard to find one that fits your watchlist. There are political dramas, romantic comedies and Dramas based on true Stories. Whether you like classic KDrama Plotlines or not so typically Stories I am sure you will find something on this list.
Please keep in mind that this list is only made in my opinion and from what I truly thought about these Dramas. If you have any recommendations for other dramas that fit in this list, please let me now!
*I only included the directors of the Dramas
- The Last Empress [황후의 품격] // 2018 by Joo Dong-Min
A Drama that plays in our period of time but can nonetheless be called a history drama. It displays how a monarchy would function in modern South Korea. The Story is about an unsuccessful and naive musical actress who marries the Emperor of the Korean Empire. Her character seems clumsy and featherbrained but being the main act in this drama her role is bond to change. This series starts of rather light and comedic however it'll change in later episodes as the Plot develops into an investigation storyline.
Main Actresses and Actors: Jang Na-Ra as Oh Sunny // Choi Jin-Hyuk as Na Wang-Sik // Shin Sung-Rok as Emperor Lee Hyuk
- The Tale of Nokdu [조선로코 - 녹두전] // 2019 by Kim Dong-Hwi
This Drama plays in the Joseon Dynasty and tells the story about Nokdu, a young man who wants to find the truth about his birth. On his way he disguises himself as a woman in order to enter a widow village where the answers to his questions lie. Given that this Story is a romantic comedy we also have our female lead character, a young woman living in a Kisaeng house next to the widow village. As the Plot develops, more and more interesting characters are introduced but the storyline lacks cliffhangers and overall interesting turning points. Nonetheless it's a light and fun to watch Drama.
Main Actresses and Actors: Jang Dong-Yoon as Jeon Nok-Du // Kim So-Hyun as Dong Dong-Joo // Kang Tae-Oh as Prince Neungyang
- My Country: The new Age [나의 나라] // 2019 by Kim Jin-Won
This is by far my favorite History Drama. The story revolves around two good friends but their different ranks in society leads them on two different paths. It's a story about a big revolution but it isn't the outcome that is important. This Plot has everything: Epic fighting scenes, an unbreakable friendship, an interesting plot with excellent cliffhangers and unpredictable turning points. All characters are unique and have their own plotlines which makes you even more anticipated to watch. The lead actors are well known figures and fit the two main characters perfectly.
Main Actresses and Actors: Yang Se-Jong as Seo Hwi // Woo Do-Hwan as Nam Sun-Ho // Kim Seol-Hyun as Han Hee-Jae
- Rookie Historian Goo Hae-Ryung [신입사관 구해령] // 2019 by Kang Il-Soo & Han Hyun-Hee
A romantic drama about a rookie historian and an abandoned prince who secretly works as an author of love novels. Although it doesn't start of very interesting the many small plotlines lining to an connected end make it worth to watch till the last episode. Fans of Astro will definitely have a joy watching this cute drama, with Cha Eun-Woo as the main lead and adorable clumsy prince. But also the historical background is rather interesting as we don't see this kind of topic often. After all it's more a romantic comedy than epic story but still entertaining to watch.
Main Actresses and Actress: Cha Eun-Woo as Yi Rim // Shin Se-Kyung as Goo Hae-Ryung // Park Ki-Woong as Prince Yi Jin
- The King: Eternal Monarch [더 킹: 영원의 군자] // 2020 by Baek Sang-Hoon, Jung Ji-Hyun & Yoo Je-Won
Another modern monarchy story taking place in two parallel worlds which gives this drama fantasy vibes. The drama tells the story of detective Jeong Tae-Eul and the Emperor Lee Gon who meet each other under very interesting circumstances. Because this story takes places in different times and worlds it comes across confusing in the beginning but the heartwarming characters and love story make up for this. This drama has beautiful cinematics and interesting plot twists not to mention great actors like Lee Min-Ho and Woo Do-Hwan. In the end it's a classic romantic love Drama and less a historical piece.
Main Actresses and Actress: Lee Min-Ho as Emperor Lee Gon // Kim Go-Eun as Jeong Tae-Eul & Luna // Woo Do-Hwan as Jo Yeong & Jo Eun-Sup
- Hymn of Death [사의 찬미] // 2018 by Park Soo-Jin
Hymne of Death is based on a true story and takes place in 1920, when Korea was under Japanese Occupation. The Drama tells the tragic love story of Soprano Yun Sim-Deok and playwright Kim Woo-Jin. Going as far as calling it the Korean Romeo and Juliet this short Story is full of dramatic plotting and beautiful poetic scenes. The historical part doesn't come to short and shows us Korea in periods of change but also the harsh reality of the Japanese invasion.
Main Actress and Actor: Shin Hye-Sun as Yun Sim-Deok // Lee Jong-Suk as Kim Woo-Jin

201012 ‘The Spies Who Loved Me’ Shinhwa’s Eric Moon Jung Hyuk: “Group Chemistry among Kim Tae Wo, Jung Suk Yong, Cha Joo Young, Bae In Hyuk is Interesting”
The entire lineup for the Interpol Secret Agents of ‘The Spies Who Loved Me’ has been revealed.
On October 12th, MBC's new Wed-Thu mini-series ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’ (directed by Lee Jae Jin, script by Lee Ji Min) unveiled photo stills of the secret agents of Interpol's second Asia branch with Eric Moon Jung Hyuk, Kim Tae Woo, Jeong Suk Yong, Cha Joo Young and Bae In Hyuk are hard at work.
‘The Spies Who Loved Me’ depicts a thrilling secret romantic comedy based on two husbands with many secrets and a woman caught up in a spy espionage.
Tumblr media
The second Asia branch of Interpol's industrial secrets bureau disguised as a travel publishing company was revealed. The sight of them chatting while gathering at an office is no different from the average office workers. However in other photos, the unexpected aura of Interpol agents who have changed their gaze, is intriguing.
Tumblr media
First, Jeon Ji Hoon (played by Eric Moon Jung Hyuk), who takes off his travel writer's mask and returns to his ‘main role’ as a secret agent to pursue a case, has a fierce look in his eyes. Charisma exudes from his intense aura of not wanting to miss even the smallest clue.
Tumblr media
Kim Tae Woo, who perfectly transforms any character into his own color, plays the role ‘Ban Jin Min’, Director of Asian Affairs at Interpol's Bureau of Industrial Confidentiality. He may seem easygoing on the outside but is a seasoned veteran who has the power to penetrate to the heart of the case. Kim Tae Woo will captivate viewers with his tit-for-tat yet warm-hearted chemistry with Moon Jung Hyuk.
Tumblr media
‘Kang Tae Ryong’, head of Interpol's second Asian branch, will be played by Jung Suk Yong, who possesses a friendly charm. Kang Tae Ryong is the one who recognized Jeon Jihoon's capabilities and led him all the way to Interpol. Being a mentor and father-like figure, he has a thoroughly civil servant mind that remains faithful to the operations and missions.
Tumblr media
Cha Joo Young, a talented actress who shows off her girl crush charm, also draws the viewers’ attention. Cha Joo Young invigorates the drama by playing the role of ‘Hwang Seo Ra,’ who enjoys every operation like a game and revels in the thrill of it.
Tumblr media
Bae In Hyuk, a rising star in the spotlight, transforms into ‘Kim Young Gu’, an analyst and the youngest of Interpol's industrial secrets bureau. In the drama, his intelligence as a KAIST grad and his handsome appearance adds excitement. People are already looking forward to the fun and exciting team play of secret agent equipped with unexpected charisma.
Moon Jung Hyuk said, "Kim Tae Woo and Jung Suk Yong are taking charge of the center of this team. It's a lot of fun to create scenes together because we have good acting chemistry." He continued, “Actress Cha Joo Young is full of energy and has good acting sense, so we were able to make the scenes richer by discussions on the set and watching the playback. I also have good chemistry with actor Bae In Hyuk. He will be loved by viewers for his unique and warm-hearted charm.”
First broadcast premieres on October 21st.

IN ANOTHER LIFE
William Choi x Jeong Tae-Ra. Mature Content.
Tumblr media
———
Jeong Tae Ra stepped out of her white van for her appointment for the day. She was supporting a medical campaign for the COVID crisis. She walked into the hospital knowing exactly who owned it. As soon as she thought about that one-night moment 4 years ago, he appeared: William Choi.
It made no sense why he got on her last nerves. She was huffing and puffing on having to interact with him, as she saw him walking towards her with that godforsaken smirk, as he threw things at his assistant.
He looks different. More mature. Less accessorized. Gone is the fur coat and the silver chains. She knew he still had his attitude with the way he acted like the ground was his runway. The way he swayed his arms and flipped his hair. The way he still wore his thumb rings. He can be so unbearably vapid, and unbearably hot. She didn't understand why he had such an effect on her.
William Choi spotted her from a mile away. There she was, Jeong Tae Ra, the only woman that had any sort of effect on him. Four years ago, he met her for the first time. A one-night moment that left him speechless and afraid of the way his heartfelt looking at her.
"Jeong Tae Ra!!! Still being a diva at every set? Are you here for charity work? Your assistants look extremely tired, stop harassing their lives!" He says flipping his bangs and adjusting his sunglasses above his head, very stylishly.
"Ya! William Choi, mind your own business! Stop harassing your assistant. How many have you changed through already? Clearly you're unbelievably unbearably!"
Both their assistants knew it was going to be a long night. The sexual tension was so thick, even a knife would have trouble cutting through it.
They both go through the campaign event on their best behavior. Shaking hands, fingers lingering a little too long while handing over the mic. Their relationship was unnecessarily complicated.
As the event ends, they both say goodbye to the people present and involved in making the event happen. She plays nicely as she shakes William's hand to thank him for helping set the event up. While she shoots daggers at him with her eyes, he winks back.
"Manger-nim, I think it'll go to that basement bar tonight. Don't worry about me, you go home. I'll call the driver or hail a taxi." Tae-Ra says.
"Are you sure? I remember what happened four years ago. Please be careful, don't get caught. Be safe"
"Excuse me, you're talking like I'm going to go see him. No thank you. He's such a waste of time. I just want a drink. I'll be fine." She replies to her manager.
Her manager drives her home, where she changes into more comfortable clothes. Clothes she wouldn't be caught dead in, knowing the diva that she is. She grabs the key to her Porsche and heads to the basement bar.
**flashback, four years ago**
Tae-ra had just gotten out of a shoot when she received a million messages from her best friend Yoo In-na, begging her to come on this double date with her. She really wasn't up for it. Men are so annoying and fake around her. It can be really frustrating to watch. However, she could use a drink and she'd do anything for her best friend. Little did she know, she was going to meet the one person that would keep her on her toes.
She asked her manager to drive her to the restaurant they were meeting at. She was wearing a tight outfit, one that accentuated her curves in all the right places. It wasn't scandalous, just a turtle neck body con. Her hair was left open. A hair tie on her left hand. She wore a bare face. While she was known as a diva, makeup wasn't really her favorite accessory. Luckily she had great skin, and a lip balm does wonders for her lips. When she got the place, she was led to a private room. Yo In-na was already waiting for her with her date. He's not here yet? That's kind of rude. Who keeps a woman waiting? This is going to be an interesting night for him. In her mind, she had made up that she was going to make this man feel awful for keeping her waiting.
"Yoo In-na you didn't tell me who was going to be my date."
"Uhhh yeah about that if I told you earlier you would have bailed so I'm sorry for what's about to happen."
"Who is it?"
"It's William Choi."
"Excuse me? William Choi? The playboy William Choi? The one that goes around acting like he owns everything and people worship the ground he walks on? That William Choi? Fuck. In-na you owe me big time for this one."
"I know! I know. I'm so sorry, and you're the best Tae-ra. I'm so sorry."
Just as she finished that sentence, she heard it. It was unmistakably his voice.
"Where is the room, I hope its the biggest room you've got here." He entered, in his fur coat, long silver chains, sunglasses, and finger rings.
Who the fuck wears sunglasses at night. I hate him already. She scoffs.
"Hello everyone, I hope I haven't kept you waiting for too long. But then the party never starts without me." With a pretentious laugh, he sits down takes his sunglasses off, and throws his gum in tissue and tosses it in the trash.
"I guess this is my date," he says as he winks at Tae-ra while sitting down.
Lee Dong Wook, Yoo In-na's date, whispers "William please behave yourself. I really like this girl, don't ruin it for me."
"Yeah, yeah. I'll be on my best behavior" he whispers back with a smirk.
Tae-ra, in an extremely agitated mood, decided to drink her weight in alcohol. She was just annoyed by his aura. She would be lying if she didn't think he was super attractive and extremely hot. Something about him really drew her in. But he was known to be an asshole, and she really doesn't need that kind of drama in her life. She just scoffed at him.
She looks drunk he thought. Very cutely drunk. He wanted to take her home, take care of her, and cuddle her in bed kind of cute. Hold up, what was that thought. He's never thought this about any woman. Usually, it's one night stands; a game of seduction. It's never anything more than that. He even has a separate apartment for his escapades, but he's imagining her in his own bed.
They haven't said many words to each other, they just shared a bottle of wine. She's looking at him like she's about to bite his head off. She's so cute. He needs to snap out of these thoughts. He's the William Choi, after all. He only breaks hearts.
Their date was coming to an end, surprisingly to William's dismay. Dong Wook said he'd take Yoo In-na home. While Yoo in-na protested a little, she caught glimpses of how William was looking at Tae-ra. She knew Tae-ra would be safe with him, so she allowed William to drop a drunk Te-ra back home.
"William behave yourself! And thank you for dropping her back home," Yoo In-na replied.
William told his driver to follow him while he drove her Porsche back to her house. He carried her from the car seat as she put her arms around him. Gone was the facade of the asshole.
In all honesty that was just a pretense for the world, he wasn't actually the asshole everyone makes him to be. It was just easier to not display vulnerability in a cutthroat world and society. That's something he learned from his father. You can't have people walk all over you.
As he picked her up out of her car, he could hear her slurred words "I am Tae-ra! Are you a part of Tae-ra-byte? You should be? How could you not be? I won a daesang you know. I'm a famous actress. You should be my fan. I'm the famous actress Tae-ra, you handsome man.
He giggled as he laid her down on her bed. He went out to grab a glass of water, and some aspirin to leave on her bedside. He took a look around and realized that this house did not look like one that belonged to a diva. It was quite humble and cozy actually.
He placed the water and medicine at her bedside. He sat next to her for a moment wanting to look at her face when she's not scoffing at him for the asshole he is. She was beautiful. Barefaced and perfect. He pushed back a strand of hair as she caught his hand and said, "I don't want to be alone tonight. Please stay. thud thud. He felt out of breath. thud thud. He wanted to stay.
So he did something he's never done before. He laid down next to her. she came closer and nestled her face next to his neck. thud thud, what is going on. He waited until she had fallen asleep. He found it hard to leave. He left a note next to her bed. He couldn't be soft, so he put his facade back up and walked out.
Looking at his driver he said "what?!" as he flipped his hair and tightened his fur jacket. Having been his driver for over a while, ever since he was a kid, he just smiled and shook his head as he let him into the car and drove them home in the wee hours of the morning.
She wakes up in the morning with the worst headache. As she gets up holding her head to look for water, she finds water and drugs right next to her bed with a note attached.
"I had fun last night ;) ."
Excuse me what?!
She quickly looks under the blankets to find that she was wearing the same clothes as yesterday and sighs in relief.
What does he mean by fun? What the hell happened? Then she remembers. TAE-RA WHAT HAVE YOU DONE omo shit what the hell Tae-ra noooooo dammit.
Well, at least she never has to see him again. Oh, she wants to bury herself because of embarrassment. She's never been like that with a guy. thud thud She can feel his fingertips on her face. She yells into her pillow.
*end flashback*
She's awakened out of her thoughts by a car honking behind her. In reality, she's thought about reaching out to him again. He is good looking after all and she has needs, but Tae-ra's ego is way too big for her to reach out to someone she was momentarily vulnerable with.
She parks her car - valet isn't conspicuous enough - and goes to take a seat at her usual spot, all the way at the end of the bar. When she gets there, she sees that it's already taken. Being the diva Tae-ra that she is, she's about to go off when she spots the silver thumb ring. He lifts his head up, and it's none other than William Choi. The person she wants to avoid, but also wants to be next to.
This time it's his turn to be drunk. "Tae-raaaaaaaaa oh my Tae-raaaaaa, I'm a tae-ra-byte for you! What are you doing here? Are you here to see me?"
"NO" she scoffs.
"Can you be a little nicer to me? I've missed you."
She was taken aback by the confession. The William Choi admitting something sp sincere.
Well, since she was already at the bar she decided to order herself a drink. Before she could get to it, he said "the lady will have a martini with an orange twist."
Excuse me how did he know my drink.
"It's been four years Tae-ra, and I haven't been able to get you out of my mind."
Her drink arrives and she chugs its contents in one go. She feels soft. William Choi isn't someone she expected to be attracted to. This is the same man that drank a sip of coffee, that he usually likes, and said "what is this disgusting shit" and threw it back at his assistant. This William Choi is making her soft?
"Another one please bartender." She downs that one too.
"Your cheeks are flushed. You look cute." He needs to stop, she thinks.
It's not like she hasn't thought about this once in a while. "I'm scared," she says.
"So am I," he says.
"You wanna get out of here?"
At this point, she's downed three martinis within 10 mins. She's tipsy but aware of her decisions.
"Yes."
She leaves her car parked and takes his vehicle.
His driver asks "the other apartment?" He replies "no, mine."
The entire drive he looks at her like she's the biggest mystery to him. She can't meet his eyes. As he leads her to his loft, he never lets go of her hand. He rarely stops staring at her. This isn't the William Choi she knows.
"My Tae-ra-byte" he suddenly says. Why does he keep saying 'my'?
They barely get into the loft when she holds his face and kisses him. She just needs to know what's going on.
thud thud.
Whose heartbeat was that?
thud thud
It's both of theirs. As she moves away from the kiss, he quickly cups her face and kisses her back with more intensity. Breaking away to say "I've wanted to do this for long. Why do you effect me like this?"
"Why do you affect me like this?" she replies.
She kisses him back with equal desire. As their mouths battle to find air, she opens her mouth further to let his tongue in. They momentarily break away gasping for air. In less than a moment, they were back into it.
Tongues battling. Fingers running through hair. Faces being cupped. Bodies heating up. She wanted this, she wanted to know what it felt like to be next to him. She was curious.
He was curious. Stepping back from the kiss, he caressed her cheek and rubbed his thumb against it. He stared into her eyes, eyes that couldn't meet his. He returns to the lips he's missed so much even though it's barely been a minute. Kissing her gentler this time, he feels her hands raise up to unbutton his shirt.
He holds her hands, "are you sure?"
The player William Choi is asking me if I'm sure. Did he hit his head? Tae-ra gets what Tae-ra wants.
She nods her head, and he dives back in with more fervor. She continues to unbutton his shirt as she feels his hands go under her hoodie. Caressing and pulling her closer like there was any space left between them to cover.
She ran her hands over his sculpted body which elicited a moan from her. He lifter her hoodie off and stared at her mesmerized. Tae-ra wasn't shy. She knew she was desired, but this time the desire was so pure, it made her.....shy?
He held her hand and led them to his bedroom. They stand at the foot of the bed. He takes her bra off. Kissing her neck. Rubbing her nipples. The thumb ring seems to add to the pleasure. As he bites and licks her neck, she moans. It's harder for him to control himself. Her hands reach his pants. She rubs his bulge over his clothing, causing him to breathe deeply at her neck. As she unbuttons his pants, his hands are already up her skirt.
She pushes his pants and boxer down leaving him naked. As he cups her ass, he takes a nipple into his mouth. Then the other. She arches her back wanting more. Unable to control. Needing more. He's rubbing circles in her inner thighs. Massaging but not touching.
"Please," she says as she watches his mouth turn into that sinful smirk.
He pulls her skirt down and pushes her on to the bed. Legs pushed apart. Underwear easily ripped off and pushed aside. She can feel his breath at her entrance. In the next moment, his tongue is swirling at her clit. Fingers inside her. Pushing and pulling in a pleasurable rhythmic pattern. Loud moans indicating her climax, he stops. Kisses the inside of her thighs.
He looks up at her, and there she is. The magnificent creature shooting daggers at him.
Fingers back inside. Thumbs rubbing circles. Soft wet kisses on her belly. Mark leaving bites inside her thighs. He feels her pulsating around his fingers. Back arched and breathless moans. He knew where she was, and he wasn't planning to stop.
Before he could restart. She was up. Their dark lustful eyes meeting. He knew he wasn't going to be able to command anything.
She stood up. Pushed him down the bed. Got on top of him. Led him inside her. Both groaning in pleasure, feeling the warmth inside.
Every movement from her hips was electrifying a thousand neurons in his mind. Up. Down. Up. Down. Whispers in his ear "there is so much you don't know about me."
Pleasured groans. He wanted to find out what else there was to know about her. He could feel her tightening around him. In one swoop motion, he was on top. Harder. Faster. Breathless. Perspiring.
Both their names yelled out at the same moment. Breathless.
"stay. please." This time it was him.
She morphs into his body.
---------
"Good morning my Tae-ra byte. Stay. I ordered breakfast." There he is with that godforsaken smirk.
"Excuse you. I am Jeong Tae-ra. You do not tell me what to do."
Suddenly, the same thought: I'm home.

Some Jang Hee Bin trivia bullet points
Movies Jang Hee Bin (1961) and Femme Fatale, Jang Hee Bin (1968)
Lee Seo Gu was approached to write the 1961 movie because of the success of his radio drama Jang Hee Bin in the same year.
At 21 years old at the time of filming, Kim Ji Mi is tied with Lee Mi Suk as the youngest actor to portray Jang Hee Bin.
Jang Hee Bin (MBC, 1971)
There was a ‘lead actor famine’ for this drama, and so a 300,000-won prize (worth 5,984,227 won today) was offered at first for the lead role, before a vote was called.
Yun Yeo Jeong was voted to become Jang Hee Bin amidst candidates Yun Jeong Hee and Kim Ji Mi, who previously portrayed Jang Hee Bin in 1961.
Though MBC’s 1971 adaptation was wildly popular, lead actress Yun Yeo Jeong received major backlash for her role. She was even removed from CFs for Yunina Shampoo and Oransshi Soda because ‘her image as Jang Hee Bin was not good for the product’.
While filming the 1971 adaptation, MBC reported many threatening calls to end the network, pressure from the audience to bring Queen Inhyeon back to life, and an incident on set where an actor playing the role of Jang Hee Bin’s court lady was given a bowl of hot water instead of room temperature in an attempt to sabotage filming.
Eventually, the drama was rewritten so that Queen Inhyeon was reinstated sooner than expected.
Actress Kim Min Jeong (Queen Inhyeon) was cast for the role in the 1971 adaptation on a stairwell by writer Lee Seo Gu.
This adaptation is the first to portray a dramatic poison scene, a plot point that would become the climax of many more adaptations to come, with various embellishments.
No known footage of this adaptation remains. MBC only began archiving drama broadcasts from the mid-’70s.
At 154 daily episodes, this remains the longest adaptation of Jang Hee Bin by episode count.
A special was aired on January 31st, 1972 - two days after broadcast had concluded.
Women of Legend: Jang Hee Bin (MBC, 1981)
The first season of Women of Legend (MBC, 1981~1982) was actually going to be another adaption of the Hanjungrok, but the production was scrapped and Jang Hee Bin became the first season instead. Series writer Im Chung would later on write two adaptations of the Hanjungrok (Oh, Heaven! for KBS in 1988, and the King’s Pathway for MBC in 1998).
This adaptation became MBC’s highest rated drama during its broadcast.
The late Kim Mu Saeng played the role of Jo Sa Seok both in this version and Jang Hee Bin (SBS, 1995).
During broadcast, Lee Mi Suk, Lee Hye Suk (Queen Inhyeon) and Lee Miji (Queen Ingyeong) were referred to as the Three Beautiful Musketeers (미녀 삼총사).
Director Yu Gil Chon’s brother Yu In Chon was selected to play the role of Sukjong. Yu In Chon is currently South Korea’s Minister of Culture.
In 1986, Lee Mi Suk admitted that mixed reactions were given to her portrayal. She elaborated that older people hated her character, while younger women related to and empathized with the character.
This adaptation broadcasted on Mondays and Tuesdays at first, but was moved to Wednesdays and Thursdays from Episode 37.
Lee Mi Suk’s portrayal of Jang Hee Bin was popular with men at the time, as the way she acted in front of Sukjong was considered to be cute.
This adaptation and SBS’ 1995 remake are loosely based on the Records of Queen Inhyeon, a compilation of memoirs by Lady Lee, one of Queen Inhyeon’s court ladies.
500 Years of Joseon: Queen Inhyeon (MBC, 1988)
Actor Kim Seok Ok played the role of Queen Inhyeon’s stepmother both in 500 Years of Joseon: Queen Inhyeon (MBC, 1988) and Jang Hee Bin (KBS, 2002)
Kim Myeong Hee played the role of Ok Jeong’s shaman here as well as in KBS’ adaptation, for which she is more famous.
Jeon In Hwa and Lee Deok Hwa took up the roles of Jang Ok Jeong and Jang Hee Jae respectively. They would become brother and sister once more in SBS’ 2001 drama Ladies in the Palace.
Jeon In Hwa’s portrayal of Jang Hee Bin was not initially popular until her reentry into the Palace in Episode 27, as her graceful and elegant aura was seen as too in contrast to the conniving characters of MBC’s previous portrayals.
This adaptation is heavily based on the Joseon Annals, as opposed to the Records of Queen Inhyeon.
The poison scene in this adaptation was famous for Sukjong ordering that one of the doors be used to restrain Ok Jeong as she was fed the poison. This portrayal would be repeated in KBS’ 2002 adaptation.
Jang Hee Bin (SBS, 1995)
SBS’ 1995 adaptation uses the same script as MBC’s 1981 adaptation, written by Im Chung.
Im Chung’s son Im Ho took the role of Sukjong. Im Ho is world famous for his role as Jungjong in Dae Jang Geum (MBC, 2003).
Eom Yu Shin played the role of Prince Sungseon’s wife both in the 1995 and 2002 adaptations of Jang Hee Bin. She also played the role of Jang Hee Bin’s mother in MBC’s 1988 adaptation.
The 1995 adaptation was supposed to be broadcast after SBS’ 1994 drama Auld Lang Syne, but was delayed because of trouble finding a lead actor. Sandglass was broadcasted instead.
Jeong Seon Gyeong was only casted after refusals from Lee Young Ae, Kang Su Yeon and Shin Eun Jeong. Lee Young Ae would soon after become the lead actor of KBS’ West Palace.
This adaptation achieved ratings of up to 43%, but began to suffer during the broadcasts of KBS’ West Palace and Jang Nok Su.
Child actor Lee Jeong Hu played Queen Inhyeon in her first three years after entering the Palace. Kim Won Hee replaced her when Queen Inhyeon turned 18. Lee Jeong Hu died of cancer on December 10, 2016, at the age of 30.
The poison scene in Episode 63 is considered to be the closest in historical dramas to an accurate portrayal of what actually happens when someone drinks Joseon’s government arsenic poison.
The scene is also reputed for Jeong Seon Gyeong’s sudden retaliation in kicking the bowl of poison from a court lady’s hands.
Jang Hee Bin (KBS, 2002)
The lead role was first offered to Lee Young Ae, Song Yun Ah, Kang Su Yeon, Chae Shi Ra and Kim Hyeon Ju before Kim Hye Su took up the role.
Even so, audience reactions were not initially positive to her being chosen, saying that she was too glamorous for the role. Public opinion began to change once Ok Jeong gained the rank of Suk Won in Episode 24.
With 16 previous years of acting experience, Kim Hye Su is the most experienced actor to take the role of Jang Hee Bin.
Kim Hye Su’s casting also broke the tradition of casting young rookies for the role of Jang Hee Bin.
The ratings once dropped to as low as 6%, but its final episode garnered a 31.1% rating.
The show’s original writer Kim Seon Young is not only the first woman to write a televised adaptation of Jang Hee Bin, but also the first woman to write an authentic historical drama (정통사극). The format has been dominated by male writers since its import to Korea in 1981 through KBS’ The Grand Order.
A rivalry was brewing between production manager Kim Sang Hun and Outdoor Filming Director Han Cheol Gyeong, which escalated into an assault incident.
The show’s latter half was written by Kang Tae Wan, rumored to be 1st-generation TV writer Shin Bong Seung under a pseudonym. Shin wrote the 500 Years of Joseon adaptation in 1988.
Kim Eul Dong, portraying Court Lady Kwon (Hee Bin’s court lady) is the mother of Song Il Guk, who portrayed Western Faction activist Kim Chun Taek.
The role of Choi Suk Bin was offered to Kim Gyu Ri, Choi Yu Jeong and Hong Eun Hee before being given to Park Ye Jin from April 9th, 2003. The first three potential candidates happened to be filming for movies when the role was offered.
At 100 hour-long episodes, this remains the longest adaptation by runtime.
Dong Yi (MBC, 2010)
Some of the State Tribunal’s clothes were previously worn in Queen Seondeok (MBC, 2009).
Jang Hee Bin’s character was written much differently than in previous dramas. Her character was meant to be more mature, driven to her decisions out of support for her family and faction. However, while the show itself was successful, Lee So Yeon’s portrayal was often referred to as ‘uninteresting’.
Extra Choi Na Gyeong (not to be confused with flautist Jasmine Choi) gained much popularity after the broadcast of Episode 36 on July 28th, 2010, featuring as a Court Inspector during the Head Inspector's arrest. Referred to as the Tibetan Court Lady (티벳 궁녀) due to her perceived resemblance to the Tibetan fox, she would later on feature in a daily drama and a sitcom. Choi Na Gyeong also became the model for a character in mobile game Master Asia, and is an avid arcade game player herself. Her cameo in Dong Yi can be seen below.
Tumblr media
Because of how differently Jang Hee Bin was written in comparison to previous adaptations, this adaptation is the first since 1968 to portray Jang Hee Bin as willingly drinking the poison that would lead to her death.
Jang Ok Jeong, Living in Love (SBS, 2013)
Despite Jang Ok Jeong’s portrayal in the drama as a fashion designer, viewers were displeased at the use of high heels and fashion mannequins, both anachronic to Joseon.
At 33 years old at the time of broadcast, Kim Tae Hee is the oldest actor to play the role of Jang Hee Bin.
The show is unfortunately considered a failure for SBS, with an average rating of only 11.3%. This puts the show behind its contemporaries Queen of Office (KBS, 13.2%) and Gu Family Book (MBC, 18.7%).
At 24 episodes, this is the shortest adaptation of Jang Hee Bin.
A historical accuracy dispute arose over the portrayal of Queen Inhyeon’s father Min Yu Jung. This led to the show being derided as a ‘fantasy drama’ by political drama fans.

I was told that only Jo In-sung should give permission because of the performance fee. I wish I could get it done. “In
2003, Kang Dong Won and the drama” Something of 1% “was the main character. The hill of the car that was erected on the hill was released. Suddenly, Kang Dong Won brother stopped the car like Superman. The appearance was wonderful. “It
was the same actor, ” he said, “but I was laughing when I said,” I’ve been dragged on without being able to stop. ” Kang Dong Won was an opponent who had never met before. That way, the acting is good. At that time, I was in my early 20s and my brother, Gang Dong Won, made his debut. Both were introspective. I took pictures of love, marriage and pregnancy but it was so awkward. I had a god hugging my honeymoon and talking in front of a bonfire. Kim Jong Hwa said, “It was too extroverted.” She said, “I felt sorry when I greeted 90 at the end of the festival. I was kidding and I wanted to go out to eat. I was awkward and I got friendly. I went to a restaurant while going on a movie promotion schedule.
I chose So Ji-seop as my best actor. Kim Jung Hwa said, “My first drama was ‘Glass Slipper’, but So Ji-seop came out as my brother and I told him that I wanted to meet him in his work later. “It was really nice and manly, and it was cool.”

See the original imageKim Jung Hwa is also mentioned in the masterpiece. Yoo Jae-seok said, “Kim Jong-hwa’s representative work is ‘New Non-Stop’, and at that time, there was a scandal with Jo In-sung.” Kim Jung-hwa said, “I have taken an advertisement for my brother and a mobile carrier. “He said.
Kim Jung-hwa said, “In 18 years, actors starring ‘New Non Stop’ have gathered together and reunited. I was told that we should push ‘New Non Stop 2019’ on the spot.
Kim Jung Hwa, who was in a relationship with top Korean actresses in Korea, also revealed the relationship with actor Gang Dong Won, So Ji Sub, and Sharing. Kim Jung-hwa said, “I was a close friend of Kang Dong-won and I was a close friend of the past. I was breathing in the drama” What’s 1% “, and both of them were introverted.
View original imagefollowed Kim Jung-hwa confessed that “sharing with was really friendly movie” Spy Girl “met at my brother extroverted personality then at that time often went to eat a meal.” And then, “But now it has become a ‘goblin’,” he said bitterly.
Kim Jung Hwa chose So Ji Sub as the most heart-breaking male actor. Kim Jung-hwa replied, “I have taken an advertisement for clothes with my brother Ji-seo, and then I asked him,” What are you going to do next? “I replied,” I want to perform the act. I confessed the story.

8 UNLIKELY K-DRAMA ROMANCES THAT CAPTURED OUR HEARTS
Love can be unpredictable and sometimes drama characters fall in love with someone they never imagined in their wildest dreams. Unconventional romances are that much more special and alluring as characters overcome barriers and find true love despite their differences. Check out some unlikely love stories cherished by many below!
Tumblr media
It’s Okay to Not Be Okay
Tumblr media
A testy children’s book author with an anti-social disposition plus a kind but weary caregiver doesn’t necessarily sound like a match made in heaven. One character is egotistical and selfish while the other character is solemn and caring. Although Ko Mun-yeong (Seo Yea-ji) and Moon Gang-tae (Kim Soo-hyun) are opposites, they share an understanding of each other through their traumatic childhood experiences. The way they help one another cope with their wounds in It's Okay to Not Be Okay is deeply heartwarming.
The King: Eternal Monarch
Tumblr media
The King: Eternal Monarch features a romance that is out of this world, literally! Detective Jeong Tae-eul (Kim Go-eun) ends up meeting Emperor Lee Gon (Lee Min-ho) from a parallel universe for a love story that defies reality. Despite living in different worlds, the pair don’t give up on finding each other even with the difficulties accompanying parallel universe travel. Beyond the separate world issue, the couple are also quite different in personalities with Jeong Tae-eul being more of a literary thinker while Lee Gon has a scientific mind. Nevertheless, they never give up on each other.
Extracurricular
Tumblr media
At first glance, Extracurricular characters Jisoo (Kim Dong-hee) and Gyuri (Park Ju-hyun) don’t have much in common except for being model students. Jisoo is a poor outsider whereas Gyuri is rich and popular. Their classmates are shocked when Gyuri claims they’re dating. However, their homeroom teacher sees that they have something in common, they both endure burdens without asking for help. They’re both very lonely and struggling with parents who inflict harm instead of nurture. While working on criminal activities together, Jisoo and Gyuri develop a special relationship and come to rely on each other.
Itaewon Class
Tumblr media
Growing up, Jo Yi-seo (Kim Da-mi) was very competitive and showed sociopathic tendencies. She’s an interesting character from Itaewon Class who wishes for the end of the world. While Jo Yi-seo thinks of bad and good as morally gray, underdog Park Sae-ro-yi (Park Seo-jun) has a more black-and-white sense of morality. Park Sae-ro-yi is also considerably warmer and more mature than Jo Yi-seo. The unlikely duo are very different, but ultimately learn from each other and develop feelings in the process. With her high IQ, Yi-seo is able to help Sae-ro-yi turn his business around. In turn, Sae-ro-yi teaches Yi-seo to appreciate people and overcome prejudice.
Crash Landing On You
Tumblr media
A South Korean heiress (Son Ye-jin) and a North Korean soldier (Hyun Bin) just meeting, not to mention falling in love, sounds highly implausible. Lucky for us, that’s exactly what happens in Crash Landing on You! Their love story involves both fate and chance as they crash into each other’s lives. The highly popular drama also features a second unlikely pairing between North Korean department store heiress/aspiring cellist Seo Dan (Seo Ji-hye) and South Korean conman Gu Seung-joon (Kim Jung-hyun). Both relationships are pretty high-stakes with life and death hanging in the balance. You can’t help but get emotionally invested!
My Holo Love
Tumblr media
Most people love technology, but to fall in love with an artificially intelligent hologram? Definitely not an everyday occurrence! In My Holo Love, Han So-yeon (Ko Sung-hee) falls in love with AI hologram Holo (Yoon Hyun-min) and Holo falls in love with her as well. Interestingly enough, Holo is modelled after and created by Go Nan-do who also falls in love with Han So-yeon. The drama features what might be the most unconventional love triangle in the history of K-dramas, but somehow it works as we see the once lonely characters experience love.
Beauty Inside
Tumblr media
Kang Sa-ra (Lee Da-hee) is a cold, sophisticated airline executive and Ryu Eun-ho (Ahn Jae-hyun) is preparing to become a priest in Beauty Inside. You wouldn’t expect their paths to cross, but they do! Both have to deal with their previous plans as they grapple with their sudden attraction to one another. Sa-ra needs to reconsider her engagement and Eun-ho has to think about his planned priesthood.
My Love From The Star
Tumblr media
Could there be a more unlikely romance than one between an alien and a top actress? My Love From the Star is a classic drama that captures the exciting and heart-wrenching aspects of a very unconventional pairing. Cheon Song-yi (Jun Ji-hyun) is a hilariously blunt diva while Do Min-joon (Kim Soo-hyun) is a stoic professor. Furthermore, Do Min-joon is trying to figure out how he can return to his home planet. All of the differences and obstacles make for a truly epic love story.
Having somewhat unrealistic pairings definitely brings up the romance factor a notch. There’s more suspense and intrigue which gets you rooting for the unlikely couples to beat the odds. These unconventional romances prove that what matters most is the ability to connect and love each other despite any differences or barriers. As cliché as it sounds, love truly does conquer all!
