The Red Circle
Published in 1911 as a two-parter, this is the penultimate story we'll be covering His Last Bow, leaving just the titular story there.
This does sound rather like "The Veiled Lodger", doesn't it?
These days, you'd have to check the immigration status of your tenants. In 1902, really not an issue. Although anti-immigrant sentiment was definitely there and growing.
Those strange coded personal messages - some even encrypted - very much existed in newspapers back then. Once radio had become a thing, the British would use them on radio broadcasts to Occupied Europe in the Second World to get messages to the resistance movements. Including the "get ready" and "go" codes for the mass sabotage operations that preceded Operation Overlord in 1944.
"Timekeepers" were used for recording arrivals and departures at a site, including that of staff for the purposes of paying wages, determining lateness etc.
Great Orme Street is more properly called Great Ormond Street, located in Bloomsbury. It is best known for the world-famous children's hospital called Great Ormond Street Hospital. They have a permanent UK copyright to Peter Pan which gives them a right to royalties for publications, adaptations, performances etc. The US copyright on the original version expires next year. If anyone wants to do a LfW retelling of the original book, it would be nice to contact them and arrange a donation. They're a very good organisation.
"Art for Art’s sake" was a French slogan from the latter half of the 19th century. You may know its Latin version - ars gratia artis - as the motto of film studio MGM.
The light flashing message gets a whole chapter covering it in Klinger's annotated version, as it's been heavily discussed by scholars. Basically, it would take multiple minutes to send that message.
The Pinkerton detective agency did a lot of investigative work in its early days, both criminal investigation and more nefarious stuff to aid strike-breaking. The latter got the US government banned from hiring them as such in the 1893 Anti-Pinkerton Act. They are still involved in anti-union stuff today.
Much of Notting Hill had become increasingly slum-like by this time as an influx of people led to houses built for one family being split to hold far more; the idea when the area was built was for the middle classes to live there, but they didn't buy the properties. It later attract large numbers of Afro-Caribbean immigrants in the post-war era, partly as the notorious slum landlord Peter Rachman was prepared to rent to them while others weren't. This growing ethnic tension culiminated race riots in 1958, with white "Teddy Boys" attacking West Indian homes. Since then, the slums have been cleared and the area has gentrified quite a bit.
It is also home to the annual Notting Hall carnival every August since 1965 (bar 2020 and 2021), which around 2 million people attend. The Metropolitan Police have moved from active hostility to active cooperation in its running and there will be photos of officers dancing with those in the parade at any given carnival. The reputation for violence is unjustified and arguably fuelled by racism - while there were frequently arrests for violence, drugs and weapons offences, on a pro-rata basis, the arrest rate is about the same as the Glastonbury Festival.
The Carbonari ("charcoal makers") were secret revolutionary societies active in what would become Italy in the early 19th century. After failed uprisings in 1831, the various Italian governments cracked down hard on them and they were effectively eliminated. They were not really engaged in protection rackets.
Dynamite was patented by Alfred Nobel in 1867. Being a good deal more stable than nitrogyclerine - although storage is important as old dynamite is a good deal less stable - it became popular for terrorists and criminals, with a series of bombings by Irish republicans between 1881 and 1885 leading to the formation of Special Branch.
Covent Garden is home to the Royal Opera House.

Meet Valdirene Militão: An Urban Farmer and Creative Recycler Fighting for the Self-Reliance of Favela Women
Valdirene Oliveira Militão, affectionately known as Val in the Roquete Pinto favela in Complexo da Maré, located in Rio de Janeiro’s North Zone, where she has lived for 52 years, embodies the possibility of everyday sustainable practices accessible to favela residents.
Agroecology and sustainability, which increasingly gain space in public debate, are knowledge passed down in the favela in an affectionate and local manner by elders.
Yet, these grassroots insights are made invisible and delegitimized for being practical, conceived through lived experience and need, through “pretagogias” [Black pedagogical practices]. Such values only become accepted and seen as a solution when they are whitewashed and transformed into commodities, into tools of control.
In this sense, reusing waste and (re)creating from scrap materials Val resignifies life and her community with her hands. This fusion of perspectives encapsulates Valdirene Militão’s initiatives toward sustainability and the economic empowerment of women. Through workshops, she teaches other women how to repurpose leftover materials to transform and market them, generating income.
In the area surrounding her home studio, where she carries out recycling activities, Val gathers milk cartons to craft protective blankets for animals. Additionally, the visual artist collects coffee capsules, costume jewelry, and PET bottles to fashion decorative objects and clothing. Notably, she gathered 204 coffee capsules to create a futuristic-style garment worn by digital influencer Yá Burihan at the 2024 Vogue Magazine Carnival Ball.
In addition to her career as a visual artist, Val promotes other sustainable initiatives. She was one of the founders of the Ricardo Barriga Project, which emerged during the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 to generate income for Maré residents and promote food security. The initiative was named in honor of Ricardo Barriga, Val’s former brother-in-law, who died of Covid-19.
The activities aim to promote a culture of sustainability, such as workshops on making soap from used cooking oil, distribution of baskets of basic foodstuffs, face masks, and eco-friendly soap.

more under the cut
C: composed

artist: album : song
2017
in 2016, eurydice was taken under the wing of blockberry creatives music producer and creative director, jaden jeong. her first project was for loona’s subunit, odd eye circle’s first mini album, mix and match. listeners can easily identify early traces of eurydice’s style through the heavy use of synths, creating an other-worldly listening experience. after the success of mix& match and max& match, eurydice continued her mentorship under jaden jeong to compose and write songs for the subsequent loona members,
[C] loona/odd eye circle: mix and match : ODD
[C] loona/odd eye circle: mix and match : Girl Front
[C] loona/odd eye circle: mix and match : LOONATIC (english version)
[CW] loona/odd eye circle: mix and match : LOONATIC (english version)
[CW] loona/odd eye circle: mix and match : Chaotic
[C] loona/odd eye circle: max and match : ADD
[C] loona/odd eye circle: max and match : Sweet Crazy Love
[CW] loona/odd eye circle: mix and match : Uncover
[C] loona/odd eye circle: mix and match : ODD front
[CW] loona/Yves : New
[CW] loona/Yves : D-1
[W] loona/Chuu : Girl’s Talk
2018
at the end of 2017, eurydice was scouted by lee soo man and became a trainee under sm entertainment under the condition that she would still be able to compose songs for blockberry creative. unbeknownst to her, sm entertainment would send her to a survival show a few months after she entered the company, halting all her activities. thus, eurydice was only able to contribute in 2 songs for loona’s first ep [++]
[CW] loona/Olivia Hye : Egoist
[CW] loona: [++] : Heat
[CW] loona: [++] : Stylish
2019
fresh out of the survival show in 2018, eurydice composed 3 tracks for loona’s first album [XX] before blockberry creative forcefully cut all ties with her, deleting her joint-project with jaden jeong ‘La Maison’ and all her other demo’s on her work laptop. thus, eurydice was unable to complete ‘hyper ballad’, and only the demo version was included in the [XX] track list. this would be the last time eurydice is seen credited as a composer for loona.
[C] loona: [XX] : XX
[C] loona: [XX] : Butterfly
[C] loona: [XX] : Where you at
[C] loona: [XX] : HYPER BALLAD (leaked)
2020
preparing for her debut in aespa, eurydice had little time to compose songs. additionally, as they were a rookie group with new strict rules placed onto them, eurydice found it hard to send her song demo’s to other artists outside sm entertainment. however, her 2018 untitled song demo, which was heavily inspired by hotel lobby music, found its way into dreamcatchers new album, crediting eurydice as one of the composers for the song. eurydice was shocked when blockberry creative used one of her completed demo’s in loona’s latest album without crediting her, but fans figured out through her distinct sound that eurydice had composed the song.
[C] Dreamcatcher: [Dystopia: The Tree of Language] : Jazz Bar
[C] loona: [#] : #
2021
after settling down in aespa and getting used to the hectic schedules, eurydice found time to write and compose more songs. eurydice initially wanted the songs to be for aespa, however sm entertainment denied all her songs for use. fed up that she was not given any creative control over her group, eurydice gave away her songs to chungha and belift lab. (at that point eurydice did not know belift lab was under hybe) ‘drunk-dazed’ and ‘fever’ were instant hits, topping the charts on melon and when sm entertainment found out that it was eurydice who had composed and written the song, eurydice was punished by confiscating her song writing journal and mobile phone, cutting off her connection with the outside world for months and preventing her from making new songs.
[CW] Chung Ha: Querencia : X
[CW] Enhyphen: CARNIVAL : Drunk-Dazed
[CW] Enhyphen: CARNIVAL : FEVER
2022
eurydice was really bored without her phone. by cutting off her access to music, eurydice was left humming melodies to herself, which was how she created the main melody of tripleS’s songs, with different interpretations of ‘la la la la’ that she sang to herself when bored. once her mobile phone was given back to her, eurydice immediately sent the demo’s of her new songs to jaden jeong for his new girl group tripleS, as a thanks for mentoring her years ago. leading to the release of the 3 tripleS songs in 2022, co-composed and co-written by eurydice.
eurydice also sent the lyrics of her song ‘pretty boys’ to yena, her close friend from produce 48, who was gearing up for her debut.
at the start of 2022, eurydice was contacted by 131 label as a feature in B.I’s single BTBT. although sm entertainment denied the opportunity for collaboration, eurydice kept on pushing for it as she had a feeling that the song was going to be a major hit, which could help boost her popularity and aespa’s. even though she was only supposed to be a feature for the song, eurydice had strong opinions on how to better the song, making it more appealing to audiences. this lead to eurydice gaining credits in production and lyrics of the song.
[W] Yena: SMiLEY: PRETTY BOYS
[CW] tripleS: Acid Angel from Asia <ACCESS> : Generation
[CW] tripleS: ASSEMBLE : Rising
[CW] tripleS: LOVElution : Girl’s Capitalism
[CW] B.I : BTBT ft. aepsa’s rein
2023
another one of eurydice’s old hotel lobby music demo’s was discovered and used in yena’s song love war. with the loona members joining new companies, eurydice was kicked back into full gear, composing songs for her loona-girlies in support of their debuts. eurydice also got the opportunity to collaborate with other producers to create ateez’s song, bouncy, which was an extremely upbeat song reminiscent of drunk-dazed’s ending.
[C] Yena : Love War
[C] artms/odd eye circle: <Version up> : Je Ne Sais Quoi
[CW] Heejin: <K> : Video Game
[C] Loossemble: Loossemble : Colouring
[CW] Loossemble: Loossemble : Strawberry Soda
[CW] Ateez: THE WORLD EP2 OUTLAW : BOUNCY (K-HOT CHILLI PEPPERS)
2024
back at it again with jaden jeong, eurydice helped compose the key melody of tripleS’s highly anticipated ‘Girls Never Die’, and ARTMS first group song, Birth, a in their first album, <DALL>. additionally, eurydice also helped compose and write ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’, reminiscent of the unique loona XX sound that eurydice brings to the table.
[CW] tripleS: <ASSEMBLE24> : Girls Never Die
[C] ARTMS: <DALL> : Birth
[CW] ARTMS: <DALL> : The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
[CW] ARTMS: <DALL> : Butterfly effect

How many people have you liked this year? Zero.
How many pills do you take a day? It's the same amount of people I've liked this year.
Do you have any celebrity crushes? Sure.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be? I love the idea of teleportation so I never have to go through traffic.
Do you put ketchup on top of your French fries or on the side? I'd put any dip on the side, but that being said I never liked tomato ketchup and have always preferred to have my fries with mayonnaise.
Where did you last sleep other than your house? That would be the accommodations we stayed at in Cavite, when we had an event in the area the following day.
Where did you get your last bruise from? I can never remember where exactly all my bruises come from, but it's always because I hit myself somewhere.
Is it okay to kiss people when you’re single? Uhhh as long as the person you're kissing is also single, I guess.
Ever worn something of the opposite sex’s clothing? I don't think so.
Do you have a secret that no one knows but you? Sure.
Last CD you blasted through your car stereo? Idk might've been a Beyonce album a decade ago, lol. I haven't put on a CD in a car in years – I always use Bluetooth.
How many email accounts do you have? Not counting my work email, I have two main ones. I also have a handful extra Gmails so I can use my Google Drives connected to those accounts to dump all the excess photos and videos from my phone, lol. I'd rather have 20 Drives than pay monthly for storage.
Who is the best cook in your family? My dad and both my grandmas.
Which baby animal is your favourite? Puppies.
Have you ever carved a pumpkin? No not practiced here.
When is the last time you went to a carnival? I mean I went to Bà Nà Hills last June and it felt like a carnival with all the game booths and such, even though I'm pretty sure they don't advertise themselves as a carnival.
Do you have a favourite glass, cup, or mug? Not really, no.
What branch of science interests you the most? Biology and anatomy.
Have you ever written anything longer than 10 pages? My thesis, lol.
Twitter or Tumblr? Neither. Twitter is a gross cesspool now, and I only use Tumblr for surveys which barely makes it a favorite.
Have you ever been given a lapdance by an actual stripper? Nope.
Favorite YouTuber? Jessica Lee!
Have you ever had a controlling boyfriend/girlfriend? To an extent.
Have you ever written a love letter to someone as a joke? No.
Do you have any gay family members? Nobody who's out, at least. But I dunno...I don't think so.
Was your first kiss romantic? Yeah.
Who was the last person to sleep over at your house? That would be Reena.
What would you think if you found out your ex was gay? She is, so this doesn't apply to me. I would be extremely, so very shocked though if she winds up straight. Just doesn't seem possible. She legitimately hates men to the point of misandry.
How many people has your best friend had sex with? Just the one, I'm pretty sure.
When was the last time you had a conversation with an ex? That was like October or November of 2020.
Are you currently “appearing offline” to anybody? I've been 'offline' on Facebook since around 2017.
What were you for Halloween last year? I can't remember what/who I went as.
Do you believe that karma can come back and slap you in the face? Not actively, but it's possible.
Have you ever been to Texas? I have not.
Do your siblings text you? My sister never does, actually. She'll mostly message on Messenger.
Have you ever searched for your own house on Google Earth? I've done that, yeah.
Did your last kiss end up with you and the person doing anything sexual? I can't remember.
Who is your ex dating/talking to? I don't know.
Did you ever have to share a room with one of your siblings? Yeah very briefly, but the room layout at the time felt forced and super cramped + my sister also hated sharing rooms lmao so that setup lasted all of like two weeks.
What happened at the last party you went to? Rita celebrated her 25th and Jo and I just spent much of the evening catching up. We were the only two in the field of like 60 people who knew each other, so we stuck together lmao.
Have you ever completely misunderstood what somebody was saying? Yeah.
When was the last time you felt ill? What was wrong? A month ago, food poisoning that sucked the energy out of me. I don't know how I managed to drive myself back home as I was really feeling faint at the time.
Who was your first best friend? Do you still speak to that person? Kaye, from kinder. We stopped talking as soon as she moved schools because there was no way to keep in contact.
Are you wearing anything that was given to you as a gift? Sure.
What color is your jewelry box? I don't own one.
Are you attracted to the last person you Facebook messaged? No, they're family.
What is your brother/sister’s favourite food? My sister can eat tubs of Jollibee spaghetti all day every day.
Do you have any ice cream in your freezer? We don't.
In your life, who is the person that seems to understand you the most? Probably Angela.
Does anyone know your Facebook password? Nope.
Would you ever consider getting a piercing in your septum? No.
Do you enjoy being outdoors? Uh, sure, as long as the weather is nice. But since the weather here sucks 365 days a year, I don't usually like being outdoors lmao.
What’re some unspeakable subjects for you? I'm an open book and can talk about anything if prompted.

Since the 1800s, Black folks have used Christmas to resist racial violence and oppression. Here are some social justice organizations to support this holiday season.
By Nadira Jamerson Word in Black
For many of us, Christmas is a time to exchange gifts, indulge in slices of sweet potato pie, and binge-watch movies like “This Christmas” and “Best Man Holiday” with family. But for Black Americans, spreading holiday cheer has also meant reflecting on the injustices in our society and actively working to do something about them.
Historically, Christmas was one of the only times when some enslaved Black folks were given time off from the grueling work of plantation life. In the 1830s, the large slaveholding states of Alabama, Louisiana and Arkansas became the first in the United States to declare Christmas a state holiday.
As Solomon Northup wrote in his memoir “Twelve Years a Slave,” Christmas was “the time of feasting, and frolicking, and fiddling — the carnival season with the children of bondage. They are the only days when they are allowed a little restricted liberty, and heartily indeed do they enjoy it.”
During the holiday season, some enslaved Black folks used their “little restricted liberty” to resist the atrocities of slavery by enjoying rest that was otherwise seldom afforded to them, while some traveled to nearby relatives to strengthen family bonds that slaveholders worked tirelessly to break.
For others, Christmas was an ideal time to plan their escapes to freedom. In fact, icon and leader of the Underground Railroad, Harriet Tubman, used Christmas Eve, 1854, to lead her three brothers to freedom in Philadelphia. And Ellen Craft disguised herself as a White man to help her and her husband escape enslavement on Christmas day, 1848.
Today, resistance may look a little different — but it’s still a strong Black tradition. According to a joint study from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, nearly two-thirds of Black households donate to community-based organizations and causes, totaling roughly $11 billion each year.
Despite having a lower net worth, Black households, on average, give away 25 percent more of their income per year than their White counterparts. Outside of financial contributions, Black Americans have taken charge of facilitating some of the most influential protests in the United States, from the 1963 March on Washington to the Summer of George Floyd in 2020.
If you want to make a meaningful change in your community this Christmas, support these Black-led organizations to help you get in the holiday spirit.
Five social justice organizations to support this holiday season:
Black Women For Wellness: This Black-women-led organization promotes health and well-being among Black women and girls through health education, empowerment and advocacy. You can support their mission by making a donation.
Black Male Voter Project: BMVP directly engages Black male voters in their 17 priority states to increase civic engagement and voter participation and ensure the needs of Black male voters are heard. You can support their mission by making a donation.
H.O.P.E.: Through counseling, success coaching and financial assistance for housing and childcare, H.O.P.E empowers Black single parents in Atlanta. Learn more about this organization in our interview with founder Kenita Smith, and support their work by volunteering at their next event.
Black and Pink National: A prison abolitionist organization dedicated to abolishing the criminal punishment system and liberating Black LGBTQ+ people and people living with HIV/AIDS. You can volunteer to support one of their programs or make a donation.
The National Coalition for the Homeless: Building a movement to end homelessness. This organization uses an advocacy-based approach to prevent homelessness for those at risk, provide resources for the immediate needs of those experiencing homelessness, and ensure their civil rights are respected and protected. Get involved by volunteering or making a donation.

anon message from curious cat: you seem to have a really lovely grasp of horror. can i ask for any favorite books, movies, etc? music, maybe?
hello, anon!!! wow, thank you for saying that! horror is a favorite genre of mine, for sure!!!
i don't read a ton of books, tbh; i am very very very picky, i suppose. but some horror titles that have stuck with me have been House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski, Come Closer by Sara Gran, Dracula by Bram Stoker. i read a lot of Anne Rice as a kid/teen, and although she's definitely a vampire mommy, her revisionist version of history is extremely cringe, so i don't tend to add her to my lists. but she does get credit for my obsession of heartbreaking longing.
as for movies, i have to deliver this nonsense under a cut because i thought of so many favorites! a lot of these are not in English lol.
i am a huge vampire fan and i love A Woman Walks Home at Night, Interview with the Vampire, Dracula, and even Queen of the Damned (it came out when i was a teen and it is absolutely iconic to me lol.) also Blade, Lost Boys, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the movie!)...so many great choices. for anything involving witchcraft or lore that seems witchy in nature (including folk horror!) i love The VVitch, Blair Witch Project (shout out to Book of Shadows, the goofy, unhinged sequel that i adore), Valerie and Her Week of Wonders. Huesera: The Bone Woman, The Queen of Black Magic (2020).
i really enjoy hauntings, like the Paranormal Activity films, and Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum. i don't like zombies at all, but Train to Busan gets an exception. the v/h/s films have their moments (i think 1 is the best.) i don't fuck with aliens lmao i get TOO unsettled. slashers like Scream and Climax are fun, and the Fear Street series. gosh, this has gotten long haha. i really like horror. and for TV shows, Sweet Home is so good!!! if there is a specific genre you would like me to go into more, lmk because honestly, i could just keep chaotically word vomiting on the topic all night. my lists are LONG.
also, does anime count? Perfect Blue for psychological horror and slasher, Tokyo Ghoul and Devilman Crybaby feel like they might fit? tbh Evangelion feels a little like psychological horror but that might be a stretch.
music-wise, i do like some goth music, but i don't listen to a ton of it. but if you want something cute and unsettling, i have been revisiting The Birthday Massacre while writing. and i am going to try to put together a fun creepy playlist for Carnival of Terror, which may scratch this itch a little more, down the line.
i am going to cut this short but please reach out to talk all things horror again, if you would like to!!! 💜💜💜
got something you'd like to say to me on anon? send it here!
#i love horror wow lmaoooo#this list barely scratches the surface for films#curious cat message#lovely anon#you've got mail 💌

Tuesdays at Dalston Curve Garden
If you’ve recently walked along Dalston Lane, or passed by on the bus, you may have noticed a number of photographic portraits, located high up on the wall immediately outside the Garden and in the windows of a number of nearby shops, venues and community organisations. They are all part of the ‘Tuesdays at Dalston Curve Garden’ exhibition, which shines a light on a very special group of people.
The portraits are by photographers Sandra Keating and Erola Arcalís who have been documenting this group since 2020 and the exhibition has been curated by the Garden’s team, in consultation with the members of the group.
The Tuesday group grew out of the programme of daily community mornings set up by the Garden in 2020, to counter the social isolation caused by the pandemic restrictions. The silver lining from what was a terrible time for so many people, has been the emergence of this amazing group of people. In the beginning, the only thing we knew that these individuals had in common was that they were all aged over 50 and that many of them lived alone. Since then the group have shared laughter, tears and joy, good moods and bad moods, and life stories. Now over 100 people regularly come together, all year round, to experience the tranquillity of the Garden, to take part in creative activities, to enjoy nutritious food, and most of all to build friendships.
On Saturday 25 February we will be celebrating the launch of the ‘Tuesdays at Dalston Curve Garden’ exhibition, with two free events. Erola Arcalís will describe her experience and thoughts about taking these photographic portraits and members of the Garden’s ‘Tuesdays’ creative team will talk about the story of the group. There will be lots of time for questions.
The talks will begin just outside the Garden, in front of the portrait wall, opposite the Hackney Peace Carnival Mural before moving inside to the Garden’s Pineapple House.
Places for each talk are free but limited, so booking is essential. Follow the links below to book;
Saturday 25 February, 12.30-1.30pm
Saturday 25 February, 3-4pm
The ‘Tuesdays at Dalston Curve Garden’ exhibition and talks have been supported by Hackney Council’s Hackney High Street Fund.
The portraits are taken by Sandra Keating and Erola Arcalís and are © Dalston Eastern Curve Garden.

Emrold Phillip is Brother Valentino. He sang Be Aware, a 50-year-old calypso for 2023. Photographed in 2020, he was low-keyed and pensive but in 2023 the calypsonian seemed rejuvenated and keen to perform. "I was always active [during the pandemic]. I did interviews on talk shows, performances on WACK TV. I wasn't stagnant." #calypso #kaiso #tent #music #Carnival #singer #performance #trinidad #trinidadandtobago #tuco #kaisohouse #portofspain #queensparksavannah #motherofallcarnivals #2023 The Calypsonians 2020 began as an attempt to survey and record in portraits the calypsonians working in tents during each year's Carnival season. It is an imperfect record, dependent on the willingness of individuals to participate and tents to accommodate the project. The first photographs were made in 2020 with visits to five calypso tents. During the pandemic, it was continued in 2021 and 2022 with photos done in an office at the studios of WACK TV during streaming sessions hosted by the station. 30th June 2024 How E-Commerce Growth Drives Demand for Industrial Properties in Malaysia The pandemic has significantly altered consumer buying patterns, making online shopping a norm. This shift has accelerated the boom of e-commerce, creating a ripple effect on the industrial real estate market. Before delving into the facts and figures, let's understand the definition of e-commerce. What is E-Commerce? E-commerce is the process of buying and selling goods and services over the internet. These transactions can occur between businesses (B2B), businesses and consumers (B2C), consumers to consumers, or consumers to businesses. Top Marketplaces in Malaysia Malaysia has several popular e-commerce marketplaces. Leading the pack is Shopee with 46.66 million visits per month, followed by Lazada with 13.26 million. Other notable marketplaces include PG Mall, Carousell, Zalora, eBay, Lelong, Goshop, Youbeli, and Prestomall. The State of E-Commerce in Malaysia In 2020, Malaysia's e-commerce revenue reached $4 billion, contributing to a global growth rate of 26%. According to GlobalData’s eCommerce Analytics, Malaysia’s e-commerce market was projected to grow by 24.7% in 2021 and is expected to reach $12.6 billion by 2024, with a CAGR of 14.3% between 2020 and 2024. High internet and mobile connectivity drive e-commerce usage in Malaysia. About 50% of the population, or 16.29 million Malaysians, are active online shoppers, with 82.9% using mobile devices for online purchases. Factors motivating Malaysians to shop online include product quality, price advantages, product range, and customer reviews. Exclusive deals, free shipping, and convenience also play significant roles. Top-Selling Categories on E-Commerce Sites During Shopee's Year-End Sale 2021, the top-selling categories included health and beauty products, baby and kids essentials, everyday consumer items, and electronics. Consumers frequently bought items such as hair shampoos, makeup, surgical masks, supplements, diapers, milk powder, snacks, pet supplies, and electronics like wireless earbuds and laptops. Key E-Commerce Trends in Malaysia Merchants Establishing Their Own E-Commerce Platforms: To save on marketplace fees and compete more effectively, merchants like Senheng and Amazing Grace have created their own e-commerce platforms. Online Holiday Package Purchases: Consumers increasingly buy promotional holiday packages online, particularly during Malaysia Super Sale, Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival, and Malaysia Year-End Sale. Growth in Voucher and Coupon Purchases: There has been a significant increase in the purchase of discounted vouchers and coupons for food, beverages, hotel stays, and more. For instance, during the 11.11 sales, over 2.5 million offline payment vouchers were claimed. Direct-to-Consumer Connections: Manufacturers are now selling directly to consumers, cutting out the middleman and offering better pricing. This shift affects their warehouse and logistics infrastructure needs. Social Media Commerce: Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp Business are helping SMEs set up online businesses, using features like Facebook Shop, product catalogues, and boosted posts to increase brand awareness and sales. How E-Commerce Drives Demand for Industrial Properties As e-commerce continues to grow, so does the demand for industrial properties such as warehouses and logistics centers. Yukon Quest Day
Yukon Quest Day is celebrated on the first Saturday of February and this year it will be marked on February 3. It is time to go on an adventure with Siberian Huskies! Dogs have been working with humans in inland Alaska for over 10,000 years. Folklore in Alaska has mythological heroes who interacted with dogs, and some claim canines to be the ancient ancestor of the first human. During the Alaskan Gold Rush, Leonhard Seppala introduced the Siberian Husky, which was smaller than native Alaskan canines. The current sled dog’s genetic base is made up of indigenous dogs and Seppala’s Huskies. The genetic mix of the normal Yukon Quest Husky has been carefully chosen through many generations of breeders.
History of Yukon Quest
Yukon River serves as the historical highway of the north. The trail would follow the routes taken by prospects to reach the Klondike during the 1898 Gold Rush, and then to the Alaskan interior for subsequent gold rushes in the early 1900s. They despised the Iditarod Sled Dog Race’s numerous checkpoints and envisioned an endurance race in which contestants would rely on themselves and survival would be as important as speed. On the 25th anniversary of the event, Shank stated, “We wanted more of a Bush experience, a race with a little woodsmanship in it.”
The Yukon Quest was conceived in a bar in April 1983 by four Alaskans: LeRoy Shank, Roger Williams, Ron Rosser, and William ‘Willy’ Lipps. To commemorate the Klondike Gold Rush era the four proposed a 1,000-mile sled dog race from Fairbanks, Alaska, to Whitehorse, Yukon. A sled dog race from Fairbanks to Whitehorse had been discussed as early as 1976. But it wasn’t until this discussion that the Yukon Quest became more than just a concept. The race was dubbed the “Yukon Quest” by them to honor the Yukon River.
The first Yukon Quest put both race logistics and all participants to the test. In 1984, 26 teams left Fairbanks. Twenty teams arrived in Whitehorse over the next 16 days. Six teams were forced to abandon the race along the way. Sonny Lindner won the Yukon Quest for the first time, finishing in just over 12 days.
Yukon Quest timeline
1986
The First Season of Yukon Quest Starts
LeRoy Shank, Roger Williams, Ron Rosser, and William ‘Willy’ Lipps take their first journey.
2011
Fastest Racer of Yukon Quest
Allen Moore, completes the race in just eight days, setting a record that is difficult to break for years to come.
2000
The First Women to Win the Quest
Aily Zirkle of SP Kennels, an American, becomes the only woman to win the Yukon Quest.
2020
The Lowest Number of Participants
Due to a lack of sponsorships, only 15 participants are present.
Yukon Quest FAQs
How do other Canadian provinces observe Yukon Heritage Day?
Yukon Heritage Day is observed on the final Friday of February. Heritage Day, on the other hand, is observed on the third Monday of February throughout the rest of Canada’s provinces and territories.
Is Yukon Quest harder than Iditarod?
The Iditarod has tougher competition, but the Quest path is far more difficult than the Iditarod, and it’s not simply because of the mountains. It is, in fact, the Yukon River. The Iditarod only travels roughly 130 miles along the Yukon, whereas the Quest travels closer to 400 miles.
What is the prize for winning the Yukon Quest?
Mushers in the Yukon Quest 1,000 Mile International Sled Dog Race will compete for a minimum guaranteed payout of $100,000. A portion of the prize money will be distributed to the top 15 finishers.
Yukon Quest Activities
Play the other games in the Yukon Sourdough Gathering: You can enjoy other winter sports like Dog Team Derby, Ski & Snowshoe Races, Ice Skating, Ice Hockey, Snowshoe Ski Ball, Bowling, and Basketball. There are many options to pick from.
Enjoy the carnival: The Yukon Sourdough carnival also includes fireworks, BBQ, ice sculptures, dancing performances, air shows, and a fiddle tournament. It is a feast for the senses so indulge in the merrymaking.
Learn about the history and legacy of Yukon: Do not only participate in numerous activities with your family but also connect with Yukon's legacy today. The festival's main goal is to bring all Yukoners together to celebrate the end of another winter.
5 Intriguing Facts About Yukon Quest Day
The coldest competitive sport ever: Every February, during the coldest and most unpredictable months of the year, this incredible winter event takes place.
Bad weather conditions don’t hamper the race: The Yukon Quest race begins on time, regardless of the weather, and lasts between 10 and 16 days until the last team crosses the finish line.
They’ve been no missed events: Since 1984, the Yukon Quest has taken place every year.
The trail follows the historic Gold Rush: This has been followed from the turn of the 20th Century.
Each team has 14 dogs: One human and 14 canine athletes traverse some of North America's last pristine wilderness.
Why We Love Yukon Quest
We love the stamina and drive of sled dogs: Sled dogs are serious athletes and the heart and soul of this sport. They are top marathon pros and are regarded as such throughout training and competition.
It emphasizes strategy: The race relies heavily on strategy and routine. The driver of the dog sled (musher) juggles between being a coach, cook, motivational speaker, cheerleader, and companion.
It’s the only international sled dog race: What began as a chat between mushers in a Fairbanks bar has evolved into something else. It is now one of the most widely followed sled dog races in the world, as well as the only one that covers two nations.

Why the rise in skateparks around the Caribbean?
Over the last few years, skateparks have started to appear on Caribbean islands. Barbados and Jamaica each built a park in 2019. Jamaica now has three. Back in 2005, Cayman Islands built one of the largest skateparks in the world, Black Pearl Skate Park. Puerto Rico is home to at least four. Cuba and Curaçao have promoted skateboarding tourism.
Locally, in Trinidad skateboarding remains small and niche. An abandoned 'Warehouse' in the northwest, has become a makeshift skate park.
With a market size of 3 billion USD, and now classified as an Olympic sport, these islands are appealing to the demand of a younger generation, and that of a global audience.
In addition, roller-skating has returned with rinks available in Barataria, Trinidad and Bon Accord, Tobago.
In the context of Stickshop it begs the question as to the impact of imported (skateboarding and surfing) vs. exported activities (Carnival and steel-pan). How can investment in under-developed areas like stilt-walking and Mas innovation, native to the Caribbean, help build diverse economies and healthier communities?
