A (Hopefully Coherent) Ramble About What Mal Du Pays Represents

So this might be a little over the place cuz I don’t really do analysis, but the battle with Mal Du Pays has really stuck with me, hear me out (and take this doodle)

So as we know, Mal Du Pays is essentially the embodiment of Siffrin’s self-hatred and intrusive thoughts, but what I find interesting is that it also represents the part of Siffrin that suffers because of it. Mal Du Pays is basically the embodiment of self-destructing thoughts; It spends the battle emotionally torturing Siffrin, but it also spends the battle silently screaming and crying.

And the name meaning “homesickness” is also a detail I find fascinating because most of the things Mal Du Pays says have little to do with the forgotten country, with the exception being Odile’s remarks about the lack of a home equating to a lack of identity. Homesickness is characterized by longing; yearning for the warmth and familiarity of home while being away from it, yet most of what Mal Du Pays says has to do with the party. To Siffrin, his party is home. While it pains them greatly that their country and entire childhood are gone, the thought of losing his new family terrifies and pains him more. He spent so long belonging nowhere, they’re terrified of losing the one place he feels like he belongs to now. He wants to be with them really badly, to the point he was subconsciously willing to hold them hostage.

Siffrin is a person made for loving. He loves strongly and wants to be loved back, but paradoxically this is also the reason he hates himself. They think it’s selfish to want that love back, they think their happiness shouldn’t come first or even come second, it shouldn’t be important at all; it’s their family who is lovable, it’s them who deserve happiness, not him, because he isn't like them, he's a nobody who belongs nowhere. Siffrin is a person who loves strongly but doesn’t lend that love to himself.

Unfortunately, this self-hatred also manifests in paranoia. Because they think themself unworthy of love they also project this onto their friends, thinking they’ll hate him if he reveals the “real” him, that they’ll turn heel as soon as they can because he’s so deplorable.

The party, in reality, loves Siffrin, but that love gets filtered through Siffrin’s self-hatred and comes back out as a mess of self-imposed conditions, “they’ll hate me if I do this” “They’ll hate me if I say that”, none of which is true, but they wholeheartedly believe it is, and it hurts him

Mal Du Pays also being unable to be harmed by Siffrin is something I feel is so important. Beating this part of himself into submission is essentially what he’s been trying to do the whole game and it doesn’t work, you can’t beat yourself up and expect that to make you feel better. Mal Du Pays, as aggressive as it is, isn’t a battle that needs to be won it’s a wound that needs to be healed

I am VERY curious as to how, exactly, this gremlin crew of half-feral children managed to negotiate an alliance with Whitebeard. My bet is Luffy just went “rearranges reality until it’s more to his liking and everybody is left wobbling dazedly”. Also, the Whitebeard Pirates thinking “this explains SO MUCH about Ace”.

while i don't have super high hopes for us getting more than one ep with byler as an established couple (or with the acknowledgement they know their feelings are indeed mutual), i still wish we get to see them sharing physical affection (tender or otherwise) that is just. them. like, little gestures we never saw with the other couples, a particular brand of closeness and familiarity charged with the reality that it's still them, each other's person -but anything goes now. no more hiding behind lies, accidental touches and plausible deniability. i just want to see that realization dawn upon them (fast or slowly) and be embraced in spades.

Won't lie, this whole chapter is just generally really cathartic. From Shima showing his feelings towards Mitsumi enough to be picked up on (and actually understanding himself what Kanechika is getting at) to opening up about his acting career. He's never been so open about his past as he is now. Historically, he just lets it go unspoken so that only those who were there at the time have any idea. And even then, the others may know the *events* but that doesn't mean they know what Shima thought or felt at the time.

It sounds like Shima was in a bad place already when the whole drinking incident took place, captured in an anxiety cycle he had no way of breaking out of. And the drinking incident has always been spoken of as this black mark upon all involved (understandably so, especially for Ririka), but knowing that Shima was at rock bottom at the time, knowing that he now wants to speak to the person "at fault", I do wonder.

For all that the incident was a black mark, it sounds like Shima was at his breaking point by this stage. And the incident let him "get out". It didn't resolve the underlying issues and saddled both him and Ririka with some brand-new ones, but! If not this way, what was his escape? It would have been a full-on breakdown in some way or another, most likely.

So it'll be really interesting to see how Shima views it in hindsight now that he's finally in a place to process his feelings about back then

They exited the café into the sunny street and began to walk. Remus had no idea where they were going, and he didn’t think either Sirius or Barty did either. 

“Erm, where are we going?” He finally asked as they crossed past their third street. Sirius and Barty both looked at him. 

“I was following you,” Sirius said.

“I was following Sirius,” Barty replied, staring at Sirius like he should have known. 

“And I was following Sirius,” Remus told them. He and Barty both looked to Sirius, and Sirius held his arms wide. 

“Why are you following me? I have absolutely no idea where we are. I barely lived in this area; Remus has been here over a year.”

“You’ve seen how I live,” Remus retorted. “Work, home, eat, watch DVDs, bed, repeat.” Barty snickered beside Sirius. 

“Ha, he’s got you there, Black!” 

“Shut up, Crouch!” Sirius barked, shoving Barty in the arm. Barty stumbled and then fell over, landing hard on his bum. 

“Oi!” He grumbled, rubbing his backside, before leaping to his feet and lunging at Sirius. They ended up in a scuffle. Sirius was winning, having Barty pinned beneath him as he ruffled his hair. A police car pulled up beside them and blipped their siren. The three of them froze. 

“Right, lads, on your feet.” A grizzled-looking police officer stepped out of the car, followed quickly by a younger officer. “We’ve had a complaint about a fight between two young men who matched your descriptions, and having caught you in the act, I’m going to have to ask you to come with us to the station.” Remus watched the blood drain from both Sirius and Barty’s faces. 

“Please,” Sirius begged. “You can’t take me, please.” The officer was unmoved, but his partner’s eyes flicked between the three of them. “Shit, shit, shit,” Sirius was shaking in fear now. Remus wrapped his arms around him and held him close. Sirius buried his face in Remus’s chest. 

“What’s up with him?” the younger officer asked. Shacklebolt, his name tag read. 

“He’s terrified that if you write his name on a form, his parents will find out and kill him,” Barty said, his voice hoarse. He moved protectively in front of Sirius. “And I mean that, they will kill him. They did it to his brother and covered it up when he did something they didn’t like. They’ll see who he was with, and they’ll kill him,” Barty said it all so evenly that you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who didn’t believe what he’d said.

The two officers looked at each other. Shacklebolt looked pleadingly at his superior, and Officer Moody narrowed his eyes. Remus noticed one had a jagged scar running from his eyebrow and down below his eye, giving his left eye an odd, distorted look. 

“That is a large accusation to make, lad. I hope you have the proof to back that up,” Barty nodded. 

“We have everything and more,” He told them. 

“Barty,” Sirius whispered. 

“No, Sirius, it’s time. They can help,” Barty turned on him. “Reg deserves better than how he’s remembered, and you deserve to be happy.” Barty looked back at Moody and squared his shoulders. “I’d like to report a murder and some other shit,” Moody huffed out a breath and opened the back door of the police car. 

“Then you’d better come with us back to the station.” All three of them piled into the back of the car, Sirius in the middle, holding tightly to Remus and Barty’s hands as he breathed hard. Remus stroked his thumb across the back of Sirius’s hand. 

“It’ll be alright,” He tried to reassure him, but Remus really didn’t know if it would be.

A little comparison of Lieutenant Lyste's voice in the English and German dub (+ a little bit of Kallus too); because I find languages interesting and this made me really think about how a voice actor can influence how a character is perceived.

First of all, I've watched Rebels primarily in German so far (though I've seen a good amount of scenes in English as well), partly for nostalgia reasons (I was in my teens, probably around 14 when I first watched the series and my English wasn't that good at the time to just casually watch an entire series, plus I was watching it with my younger sister), but also because I think the voice actors especially for the main and recurring characters are genuinely doing a really good job. Heck, for some characters I might actually prefer their German voice because it is that good! Kallus might actually be a good example for this if he's already here, I think he has such a pleasant roughness in his voice. For Thrawn it's also a pretty close match, he sounds wonderful in both variants but I might prefer his German voice just by a teeny tiny bit.

Who I actually wanted to talk about is Lieutenant Lyste though. I'm mainly familiar with his German voice, and as he's a fictional crush of mine, this is also the voice of his that I've fallen in love with. When I imagine him talking - regardless in which language - the sound is that of his German voice. Personally, I feel like that voice makes him seem a little younger and more naive compared to his English voice. I've always headcanoned him to be fairly young, in his early to mid twenties, and that by the start of the series he had just completed his military training recently (his position as supply master might have been the first one where he had to bear more responsibility). I've always seen him as a guy who's motivated and just trying his best, but at the same time he's lacking experience, plus, if we're being honest, when it comes to his military career he's a pretty average guy. I think he'd learn and improve over the years, but he isn't the "best of his academy year" or "promising young talent with innovative ideas" kind of guy, and he's far from a mastermind like Thrawn. He's literally Just A Guy, and personally, that's actually something I really like about him and that makes him endearing to me.

In contrast, I think his voice in the English dub makes his age a bit more ambiguous (I still wouldn't guess him older than 30, also based on his appearance but I feel he seems less "boyish" than in the German dub). I think it also gives him a bit more of an arrogant tinge and less of the playfulness that at least I hear in his German voice. He still conveys that dutifulness, but he seems a bit more uptight as well. I wouldn't go so far to say that that's bad, and I still like his English voice as well, but I think for me it won't come close to the charm that his German voice has to me.

Towards the end I want to point out though, that the voice, while being an important aspect, is not everything that makes a character. Appearance, behaviour, body language, actions and decisions contribute to that as well. What I found interesting is that most headcanons that I read about Lyste actually still overlap closely with my own as well, even though I heavily assume that not all people who wrote them are familiar with his German voice. I would say that this is a good thing, because his core personality is still conveyed across language barriers, even though the way that different actors voice him may emphasise different aspects of his character more or less.

I decided I needed bath bombs so I set out to do that and only realized my error when I saw the traffic control person as soon as I turned into the mall. On the Saturday before Christmas. lol

My upstairs neighbor moved out a month ago so I no longer hear about their sex life through my ceiling. My next door neighbor moved out last week so I no longer have to wear my active noise cancelling earplugs to muffle their snoring. It’s quieter around here, but the hot water takes longer to find my tap in the morning.

I deleted a whole chapter about that computer case. You’re welcome.

Never did end up doing Christmas cards this year. I’ve got mixed feelings about that.

I want to do a bunch of dumb end of year data analysis things, but I have to pull a bunch of data to do it, and that’ll take me like a dozen minutes, and that's like a dozen minutes that I could spend not doing that thing. You see my dilemma. Stay tuned, I guess?

I’m the only one on my team not scheduled off on Monday and I think Tuesday next week (and, actually, most of the next 2 weeks). It’s easy enough to keep Teams active and my work email open while I tinker on side quests.

The checkout person at LUSH is always like “oh, are these a gift?” as I unload 9 bath bombs from my basket, as if they don't get many solo middle aged dudes stocking up on bath bombs on Saturday afternoons.

Turns out I miscounted and have 1 too many bath bombs so I’m taking a bath about it.

one of my favorite things to play around with, in omegaverse? changing what something "usually" means.

family = parents and biological children in a shared household?

not any more its not!

family = a group of friends who share a house together like they have for years, even after forming partnerships with others or having kids

family = a queer platonic couple, the kids they adopted (despite being able to procreate together if they wanted to), and the neighbors that are like siblings to them

family = three generations of parents, children, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who might as well be family, who rally around each other in good times and bad

family = two lifelong best friends who went from playing together as kids, to raising families, to growing old, while becoming the cornerstones of their neighborhood

family = one big old polycule spread across multiple households, and the assortment of kids who have called them aunties and uncles from day one

family = a happily single person, their pets, and the network of friends that they feel safe going to whenever problems are bigger than one person should carry

family = a couple, their newborns, the siblings who help out, and the grandparents who are first in line to babysit

family = a single parent, their kids, and a very robust support network

family = a group of people who care about each other but aren't compatible when it comes to sharing a home, being very supportive - just from a distance - with or without other elements

and the fun thing is, you can slot any type of person into these setups!

make the two best friends look like the default "boy meets girl" rom-com pairing but with zero sexual tension.

make the people who sound like the most stereotypical suburban family, incredibly queer visually.

want your packs to be multi-generational households by default? go for it!

want to explore belonging beyond the nuclear family or the quest to create one? sure thing!

it gets even more interesting based on the social positions of the six sexes.

(in my head: primary sex = alpha, beta, omega. secondary sex = male, female. to keep from having to list them all, its "six sexes" but in some settings there can be more or less)

for example: what if there's a society that separates alphas and omegas as a general practice? it's the task of all omegas to run the towns and villages and see to their defense; alphas, on reaching presentation, are trained to watch over the land and tend to the region as a whole. if the two groups tend to mix mostly with those they share a classification with, how do their family groups appear?

or what if the society is arranged less like our human ones, and more like specific animal groups? if your packs operate more like a bee hive, how does that change their view of family, future generations, and group membership?

basically: there are lots of types of families, even irl, so making packs unique is more fun to me than going "parents and their kids" despite that being the most accurate to actual wolf pack structures

(though, since that structure isn't super typical to how we show families in media, i do kinda want to explore an established one! just not super interested in the "couple meets and raises their first baby" part because there's already a lot of focus on that as what "happily ever after" looks like. i want to get into how the following generation finds meaning and sets goals without doing as their parents did)
