LOS ANGELES − The California Department of Motor Vehicles issued an apology Thursday for printing a personalized license plate that appeared to mock the Oct. 7, 2023 attack on Israel by Hamas, though the family of the car owner has disputed that interpretation.

A photo of the license plate reading "LOLOCT7" was published by the X account StopAntisemitism which claimed the license plate, affixed to a Tesla Cybertruck, was photographed at a major intersection in Culver City near Los Angeles.

The account demanded the California DMV recall the plates saying it "celebrates the October 7th terrorist attack" and calling it a "vile mockery."

The son of the car's owner told ABC affiliate KABC Friday that the account was misinterpreting a Tagalog word on the license plate.

The son, who the station did not identify, said that the plate should be read as "LOLO-CT-7," referencing the Tagalog word for grandfather, the model of the car and the number of grandchildren the owner has. The son told the station that the explanation was given to the DMV when the application for the license plate was submitted.

The California DMV said in a statement posted to X that it is recalling the plates and that it would review its personalized license plate review.

"We sincerely apologize that these personalized plates were not properly rejected during our review process," the statement read.

The car owner's son told KABC that the incident is a "total big misunderstanding."

"We have great empathy for anyone who has experienced any hatred," the son told the station. "We would really appreciate, in turn, for anyone that's seeing this or hearing this to have any empathy toward our family because we had no ill intent for anything."

When I transitioned from Buzznet to Live Nation, about a year in, I tried a new therapist because of insurance and a friend recommendation. The new one was closer, in Glendale. She tried to teach me tapping. EFT? Tried to get me to sit with my emotions way before I was ready to. I ran back to Dr. Witherspoon, eventually. The commute was worth it. I think, for me, therapy was about accountability. Progress. It was not acceptable to vent about the same things week after week, especially if it was my own money. The same way I stopped tanning after I got a reliable dermatologist. Oh, do you want to just set your money on fire?

Today, she said she was going to miss me, her eyes rimmed red. She teared up. I sort of deflected all emotion. Not that she is ANYTHING like my Dad, but she's been "trying" to retire for years. The pandemic and teletherapy providing more freedoms. I can't really be sad, can I? She's given me so much perspective. I've lived so many lives since we started in 2006.

She confessed she was caught unaware when I got engaged (and I guess, by proxy, married), got pregnant. Those were not things I talked about, at all. Being married, building a family. I said, you're not the only one who had that reaction. But I'm still glad I did it, had that experience.

When I dig in for book stuff, for writing (is this what they call SHADOW WORK?) it is not easy. I'm trying to writing a collection of semi-humorous essays like David Sedaris or Samatha Irby but it's not as flippant as recalling conversations or flirtations, I can feel it in my bones and tendons and tear ducts.

I can come up with a few true sentences and then I am so, so tired.

If I ever publish my book I will thank her.

An unprecedented number of flood emergencies have struck the U.S., serving as a warning of what lies ahead.

Extreme weather has battered the United States this year, resulting in more flood emergencies than in any previous year—a stark and alarming statistic that scientists say reflects the future as the planet warms.

This year, the National Weather Service has issued an unprecedented 91 flash flood emergencies, the highest number since this urgent terminology was first introduced in 2003.

While all flash flood warnings indicate a serious situation, flash flood emergencies are particularly rare, accounting for only about 1% of flash flood warnings since 2019—underscoring their severity.

“It’s the most powerful tool in our toolkit,” said Kate Abshire, a hydrologist and head of the National Flash Flood Services at the weather service. “It serves to emphasize the extreme threat to life and property and the potential for catastrophic damage.”

The warnings reflect the chaotic and devastating nature of flooding this year, which has claimed dozens of lives, reshaped entire landscapes, and cost the United States billions of dollars.

The latest flash flood emergency occurred in Roswell, New Mexico, last weekend, when the desert city received approximately half a year’s worth of rain in just 24 hours. Roadways transformed into rushing rivers under the cover of darkness on Saturday evening, trapping hundreds and resulting in at least two fatalities.

This event exemplifies the extreme rainfall occurrences that scientists predict as the planet warms.

As the world heats up due to fossil fuel pollution, the most intense rain events are becoming heavier and more frequent. A warmer atmosphere can absorb more moisture like a sponge, releasing it in the form of torrential downpours.

According to Astrid Caldas, a senior climate scientist with the Union of Concerned Scientists, “we are definitely seeing the consequences of climate change reflected in this year’s devastating flash flooding events.”

“Extreme rain events have become much more frequent and are likely to continue increasing,” Caldas noted.

She also pointed out that development around waterways and in mountainous areas places people at greater risk, heightening the likelihood of catastrophic, life-threatening flooding disasters. “It’s about where we build and how we alter the natural flow of water,” Caldas explained. “Water will always take the path of least resistance, and with so much development along riverbanks, that’s a key reason why flooding events are on the rise in the U.S.”

Tropical Trouble

The number of flash flood emergencies varies significantly from year to year, largely influenced by changing weather patterns and tropical systems affecting the U.S.

Tropical systems are initially fueled by a vast amount of moisture, which they often release in some of the most intense rainfall events imaginable.

This year has been particularly impactful. According to a CNN review of archived warnings, rainfall from hurricanes Debby, Francine, Helene, and Milton accounted for nearly half of all flash flood emergencies issued.

Hurricane Helene brought unprecedented rainfall of up to 30 inches to western North Carolina, resulting in catastrophic flood damage that rendered many areas unrecognizable.

Helene alone was responsible for more than 30 flash flood emergencies this year, surpassing the total of 29 flash flood emergencies recorded last year.

Like all heavy rain events, tropical systems are being intensified in a warming world.

They receive an additional boost from extremely warm bodies of water, such as the Gulf of Mexico, which not only allow them to rapidly intensify but also add extra moisture to the atmosphere.

As global temperatures rise, oceans are heating up. The Gulf of Mexico maintained record-warm levels throughout much of the summer and early fall, acting like rocket fuel for tropical systems.

All the hurricanes that impacted the U.S. this year were fueled by the Gulf.

Compounding Disasters

The increasing frequency of extreme weather due to climate change has also contributed to flood disasters.

In early summer, the South Fork and Salt fires ravaged thousands of acres in southern New Mexico, destroying hundreds of homes and businesses and claiming at least two lives.

Shortly afterward, heavy rainfall hit the burned area, triggering multiple flash flood emergencies. The ashen soil, stripped of vegetation, was less able to absorb the rainfall, resulting in torrents of water and debris that caused even more damage.

This fire-to-flood disaster is just one example of the many such incidents that have occurred this year.

In total, there have been at least 45 major disaster declarations related to floods in 2024, according to FEMA. Additionally, CNN previously reported that the U.S. has already experienced two dozen billion-dollar extreme weather disasters this year, placing significant strain on FEMA’s disaster relief funding.

As the atmosphere and oceans warm, flood-related disasters are expected to continue increasing, creating a potent mix that may establish a new normal.

“The past no longer predicts the future,” Caldas cautioned.

Kamala Harris' Husband Admits to Affair - Which Resulted in Pregnancy - With His Kids' Teacher/Nanny

An exclusive story in Saturday's Daily Mail revealed that Kamala Harris' husband, Doug Emhoff, had an affair with a woman who worked both as a teacher at his kids' school and as a nanny for the family during his first marriage, and that the affair resulted in a pregnancy. The marriage ended when Emhoff's first wife, Kersten, discovered the affair in May 2009.

The woman, Najen Naylor, 47,

did not deny the story when approached by DailyMail.com at her home in the New York millionaires’ playground, The Hamptons. She would not comment, except to say, ‘I’m kind of freaked out right now.' A close friend with direct knowledge of the affair and pregnancy told DailyMail.com that Naylor did not keep the child – though her social media shows a video of a mysterious baby girl named Brook in 2009, the year the baby would have been born. Another friend, Stacey Brooks, who mothered twin boys around the same time as Naylor was expecting, also did not deny any of the claims – but said she would not divulge further information without Naylor’s permission.

Naylor now lives in Hampton Bays, on New York's Long Island, and works for Audible. According to the Daily Mail report, Naylor lost her job at The Willows, the private school in Culver City attended by Cole and Ella Emhoff:

One source claimed that Emhoff had a financial settlement with Naylor, and that she left her school job due to the hushed-up scandal.

It's unclear whether Naylor left her school job voluntarily, or was pushed out due to the scandal, which wasn't a secret among other parents at The Willows:

A mother who sent her children to the school before 2009 said she was aware of the affair, and though she was disgusted by Emhoff, she only had positive words for Naylor, who had taught her children and nannied them on family vacations. ‘She was a lovely person, a great teacher to my kids,’ the mother, who asked to remain anonymous, told DailyMail.com. Another friend with intimate knowledge of the scandal, confirmed the affair with Emhoff, but told DailyMail.com that Naylor did not keep the baby.

While the sources listed by Daily Mail say that Naylor did not keep the baby, it wasn't clear whether they meant that Naylor had an abortion or that the baby was born and then given up for adoption. Reporters with Daily Mail searched Los Angeles birth records for 2008 and 2009 and were unable to find a record for a Brook Naylor in those years, or any child born in that time frame with the last name Emhoff. It's not known whether the baby would have been born in Los Angeles County or elsewhere if Naylor carried to term.

While Emhoff's office didn't return requests for comment from Daily Mail, after the story was published a statement was sent to CNN seeming to admit to the affair, but without reference to the pregnancy or what happened to the child.

“During my first marriage, Kerstin and I went through some tough times on account of my actions. I took responsibility, and in the years since, we worked through things as a family and have come out stronger on the other side."

Likewise, Kersten Emhoff issued a statement ignoring 

“Doug and I decided to end our marriage for a variety of reasons, many years ago. He is a great father to our kids, continues to be a great friend to me and I am really proud of the warm and supportive blended family Doug, Kamala, and I have built together."

It's odd that Harris and Emhoff didn't simply ignore the story and have surrogates dismiss it as something from a gossip rag, or blame it on "MAGA crazies." Usually that only happens when there is something more to a story, and they don't want that to get out. By tacitly admitting the affair yet being silent about the child it produced, are they hoping the story is labeled as a terrible invasion of privacy and the politics of personal destruction?

Already Harris' surrogates are asking why it matters that Harris' husband had an affair during a marriage before he met her and simply ignoring the part about the resulting pregnancy, and also ignoring the fact that as one of Naylor's employers Emhoff was in a position of power over her and that the affair could absolutely be termed sexual harassment, and that Naylor lost her other job as a result of the affair - and possibly due to the influence of Doug and/or Kersten Emhoff. Those are the questions that need to be asked of Team Kamala.

Dorothy Sebastian (born Stella Dorothy Sabiston; April 26, 1903 - April 8, 1957) was an American film and stage actress.

Sebastian was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, the daughter of Lycurgus (Lawrence) Robert and Stella Armstrong Sabiston. An article on the website of the National Alumni Association of The University of Alabama noted, "Most accounts indicate that she was born Stella Dorothy Sabiston (she changed the spelling of her last name after leaving home) ..."

In her youth, she aspired to be a dancer and a film actress. Her family frowned on both ambitions, however, so she fled to New York at the age of 15. Upon her arrival in New York City, Sebastian's southern drawl was thick enough to "cut with a knife". She followed around theatrical agents before returning at night to a $12-a-month room, after being consistently rejected.

Before appearing in films, Sebastian was in George White's Scandals. Her first contact in Hollywood was Robert Kane, who gave her a film test at United Studios. She performed in George White's Scandals and later co-starred with Joan Crawford and Anita Page in a popular series of MGM romantic dramas including Our Dancing Daughters (1928) and Our Blushing Brides (1930). Sebastian also appeared in 1929's Spite Marriage, where she was cast opposite her then-lover Buster Keaton.

By the mid-1930s, Sebastian was semi-retired from acting after marrying Hopalong Cassidy star William Boyd. After their 1936 divorce, she returned to acting appearing in mostly bit parts. Her last onscreen appearance was in the 1948 film The Miracle of the Bells.

Sebastian is credited with co-writing the Moon Mullican blues ballad "The Leaves Mustn't Fall". Mullican recorded this in 1950 and 1958 and it has become a bluegrass standard.

Sebastian married actor William Boyd in December 1930 in Las Vegas, Nevada. They began a relationship after meeting on the set of His First Command in 1929. They divorced in 1936.

In 1947, Sebastian married Miami Beach businessman Harold Shapiro to whom she

remained married until her death.

On April 8, 1957, Sebastian died of cancer at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, California. She is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California.

For her contribution to the motion picture industry, Dorothy Sebastian has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6655 Hollywood Boulevard. It was dedicated on February 8, 1960.

THE GOLDEN TOUCH

January 17, 1951

“The Golden Touch" is a modern re-telling of the King Midas story with Jack Benny and his friends as King Midas and his court. It was directed by Robert F. Mansfield, written by Robert Hugh O’Sullivan and with Harry Zimmerman as the composer / conductor. 

“Family Theater” was a weekly half-hour dramatic anthology radio program which aired on the Mutual Broadcasting System (MBS) from February 13, 1947, to September 11, 1957. The show was produced by Family Theater Productions, a film and radio studio extension of the Family Rosary Crusade founded by Father Patrick Peyton as a way to promote family prayer. The motto of the the Holy Cross Family Ministries is, "The family that prays together, stays together." 

Although the program had no commercial sponsor, Father Peyton arranged for many of Hollywood's biggest stars to appear including James Stewart, Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, Raymond Burr, Jane Wyatt, Charlton Heston, Bing Crosby, Jack Benny, Gene Kelly, William Shatner, and Chuck Connors. 

A total of 540 episodes were produced. The program featured not only religious stories but half-hour adaptations of literary works such as A Tale of Two Cities, Moby-Dick and Don Quixote.

Synopsis ~ Lucille Ball is the hostess and Jack Benny stars as the King obsessed with his gold and counting it. The Queen and her daughter get a Genie to sort the King out. The Genie grants the King one wish and the King tells the Genie that he can always use more gold and asks that everything he touches will turn to gold. Of course this seems exciting at first until he turns the Queen and his daughter in to solid gold.

The program was repeated on May 23, 1951.  

King Midas is popularly remembered in Greek mythology for his ability to turn everything he touched into gold. This came to be called the golden touch, or the Midas touch. 

CAST

Jack Benny (King Midas) was born on Valentine’s Day 1894. He had a successful vaudeville career, and an even greater career on radio with “The Jack Benny Program” which also became a successful television show. His screen persona was known for being a penny-pincher and playing the violin. Benny was a Beverly Hills neighbor of Lucille Ball’s and the two were off-screen friends. Benny appeared on “The Lucy Show” as Harry Tuttle (a Jack Benny doppelganger) in “Lucy and the Plumber” (TLS S3;E2), later did a voice over cameo as himself in “Lucy With George Burns” (TLS S5;E1), and played himself in “Lucy Gets Jack Benny’s Account” (TLS S6;E6). He was seen in four episodes of “Here’s Lucy.” Benny and Ball appeared on many TV variety and award shows together. He died in 1974, a few weeks after taping “An All-Star Party for Lucille Ball.”

Lucille Ball (Hostess) was concurrently starring in her own radio comedy “My Favorite Husband” having starred in films from 1933.  In the fall of 1951, Ball and her husband Desi Arnaz launched their iconic television series, “I Love Lucy.”  After her divorce from Arnaz in 1960, Ball starred in two subsequent television series’ - “The Lucy Show” and “Here’s Lucy.” After a series of TV specials, she did one more series in 1986, which was not successful. She died in 1989. 

Ted de Corsia (Harvey Benson, Reporter from The Daily Telegram) was an actor in touring companies and on radio before making a memorable film debut as the killer in The Lady from Shanghai (1947). De Corsia's New York street demeanor and gravelly voice assured him steady work playing street thugs, gang leaders or organized-crime bosses. On radio he starred in the CBS series "Pursuit" (1949-50). Two years before he was heard on an episode of “My Favorite Husband” with Lucille Ball.

Barbara Eiler (Princess Imogene) started acting as a teenager and appeared regularly on the radio programs “The Life of Riley,” “A Day in the Life of Dennis Day,” “The Fabulous Dr. Tweedy” and “Glamor Manor." She did a 1948 episode of “My Favorite Husband” with Lucille Ball. 

Eleanor Audley (Queen Midas) played Lucille Ball’s mother-in-law on “My Favorite Husband.” She would later play Eleanor Spalding, owner of the Westport home the Ricardos buy in “Lucy Wants To Move to the Country” (ILL S6;E15) in 1957, as well as one of the Garden Club judges in “Lucy Raises Tulips” (ILL S6;E26).

Alan Reed (Matthew the Butler / Tony the Cook) is probably best remembered as the voice of Fred Flintstone. He started his acting career in 1937. He acted opposite Lucille Ball in a 1963 episode of “The Lucy Show” (ILL S1;E25). In 1967, he made an appearance on the Desi Arnaz series “The Mothers-in-Law”. He died in 1977 at the age of 69.

Reed uses an English accent as Matthew and an Italian accent as Tony.

Verna Felton (Molly, Kitchen Help) received two Emmy nominations for her role in the Desilu series “December Bride,” playing Hilda Crocker from 1955 to 1959. She did two episodes of “I Love Lucy,” including playing Lucy’s stern maid, Mrs. Porter. Felton voiced many characters for Disney.

Felton uses an Irish accent as Molly.

Howard McNear (Ipsuda, Magician) played Mr. Crawford, Little Ricky’s music teacher on “I Love Lucy.” McNear went on to play Floyd the Barber on “The Andy Griffith Show” from 1961 to 1967, filmed on the Desilu backlot. He was also seen in Lucy and Desi’s 1953 film The Long, Long Trailer.

Frank Nelson (Genie / Mr. Gene Blue) was born on May 6, 1911 (three months before Lucille Ball) in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He started working as a radio announcer at the age of 15. He later appeared on such popular radio shows as “The Great Gildersleeve,” “Burns and Allen,” and “Fibber McGee & Molly”. This is one of his 11 performances on “My Favorite Husband.”  On “I Love Lucy” he holds the distinction of being the only actor to play two recurring roles: Freddie Fillmore and Ralph Ramsey, as well as six one-off characters, including the frazzled train conductor in “The Great Train Robbery” (ILL S5;E5), a character he repeated on “The Lucy Show.”  Aside from Lucille Ball, Nelson is perhaps most associated with Jack Benny and was a fifteen-year regular on his radio and television programs.

Howard Culver (Jake Workman, Ice Man) was best known as hotel clerk Howie Uzzell during the entire run of TV's “Gunsmoke.” On radio he starred in the title role of the Western adventure series “Straight Arrow” which aired on Mutual from 1948 to 1951.   

Tony La Frano (Announcer) was the regular announcer for “Music Depreciation” (1945) and every episode of “Family Theatre” (1947-1957). 

EPISODE

Hostess Lucille Ball introduces the show, which was broadcast in front of a live audience. Lucille urges listeners to pray together as a family. She then introduces Jack Benny as the King, to great fanfare. 

Instead of Benny, the show opens with Imogene on the telephone of a busy office in the Kingdom of Midas. Harvey Benson, an American reporter, arrives to see the Queen, who thinks he is there for money, but he wants the story of something that happened there recently. She tells the story in flashback...

A month ago, King Midas is at breakfast with his family. Imogene complains about having cornmeal mush for breakfast again, but Midas reasons that they have a 752 pounds of corn (thanks to the foresight of his father), so they must eat it!  

Matthew, King Midas’ butler, suddenly quits after 32 years! He is tired of carrying the King’s gold. He is also tired of the mush. Because of an ancient decree, the help must eat whatever the King eats. 

Imogene and the Queen insist King Midas counts his money too much - 80 million dollars a day!  Once the King is gone, the Queen sends Imogene on a mission to see a magician named Ipusda to buy a genie. 

At Ipsuda’s shop, Imogene has her pick of genies - even ones vacuum packed in cans (only for tourists)!  She buys the blue bottle special for 5 gold pieces - plus a small deposit on the bottle!   Imogene brings the magic blue bottle back to the Queen, who says the magic words: “Genie out and at attention!  Do the chores which I will mention!”  The giggling Genie immediately appears, talking in rhyme, very amused at his own cleverness.  They promise the Genie his freedom if he does as bid.  The Queen whispers the orders to the Genie, without letting Imogene know.

Next morning, Imogene and the Queen introduce Midas to his new servant - the Genie!  At their bidding, he conjures up bacon and eggs. Midas hates the Genie’s rhyming. He asks Midas what one wish he wants more than anything else in the world.  Naturally, he wants more gold. 

The Genie grants him with the skill to turn everything he touches to gold!  The Genie pops back into the bottle. Imogene notices his utensils have turned to gold - then his eggs - then his coffee.  

Before he can stop himself, he turns his own daughter to gold! Midas demands the Queen bring the Genie back, but she refuses and storms off. 

Midas hears the kitchen servants Tony and Molly arguing in the next room. Tony goes to shake his hand, but he turns to gold! He touches Molly and she, too, turns to gold. 

The ice man arrives and sees the two golden servants. Signing for the ice, the King tries to give him the golden pencil as a tip! Midas explains his problem - everything he touches turns to gold. Jake is about to phone his brother-in-law, Ipsuda, but when he learns that it was the work of a genie, he hangs up. All they can do is wait for the Queen to return to get the Genie out of the bottle! 

Time passes and Jake reveals that the King is not as highly regarded in the Kingdom as he thinks.  The King admits to being money mad. Midas decides to start giving his money away - starting now!

The Queen arrives and she Midas admits that he never wants to see gold again as long as he lives. After accidentally turning Jake to gold during a hug, the Queen summons the Genie to change the King back - in return for his freedom and a good job. The Genie removes the curse. 

Flash forward to the Queen’s interview with newspaper reporter Harvey Benson. Mr. Gene Blue, the president of the relief organization, enters. He makes a joke about his name sounding like “Benson Burners.” He laughs hysterically as the music swells. 

Lucille Ball closes the show by asking if the audience knows how Hedda Hopper makes a hat, comparing it to how scientists make a concoction out of ordinary things to create something incredible: jewels out of sawdust, perfume out of coal tar, medicine out of weeds or mold. She says the power of prayer, just like the ordinary things that create something magical, are there all the time, but must be used to get benefits: the jewel of a happy home life, the perfume of uplifted hearts, medicine for a sick world.

LUCILLE BALL: “The family that prays together, stays together.” 

Announcer Tony Lo Frano reads the credits and says that next week’s program Walter Brennan and Bette Lynn in “A Star for Helen” with the honorable Frank Walker as host.
