It had been a moment of spontaneity when his morning walk had diverged from his usual route through Jinzhou, barely awake after working through most of the night to catch up on various projects. The sentinel wasn't finished, not by a long shot, which once more prompted the question of why he found himself standing at your stall, checking the watch on his wrist and faintly wondering how long it would be reasonable to wait before leaving. 

His mind was quickly lost to thoughts of tests that would need to be done, who he could delegate it to, components that had to be ordered; he was all out of 6mm screws and getting his hands on more scarletthorn would be beneficial, the combination of toughness and slight flexibility preferred for maintaining structural integrity and absorbing residual frequencies to ensure no harm came to the wielder. 

"Come to finish the job have you?"

Mortefi was startled out of his thoughts by the weight of a body colliding with his. There wasn't enough time to stop the click of his tongue, hand moving to put the glittering metal -when had he even picked it up- back into his pocket. Morning dew dripped from the velvety petals and onto your hands, sunlight reflecting with only half the intensity in the droplets as it did in your eyes. Arms filled with your harvest and not another person in sight. It wasn't exactly a surprise that you had gone out alone despite all logic.

That didn't help the uneasy feeling that bloomed beneath his ribs. 

"Despite your best efforts to paint me as a villain, I don't exactly consider myself a pyromaniac. Being on a morning walk is hardly a crime," he crossed his arms in front of his chest, feeling none of the chilly breeze that made the hairs on your arms stand on end, "and if that were the case, I can currently see someone else who would be in just as much trouble."

He felt a small wave of uncertainty at the way his comment was met with nothing but a roll of your eyes, had he been hoping for a laugh? 

"Then I'm curious to know why you were waiting for me," it was wholly non-accusatory, and Mortefi found his mind reeling as it searched for hidden meaning.

Despite himself, a hand ran through his unruly hair while he hesitated to provide an explanation. Truthfully, doubt was currently coursing through his blood, licking along the veins like the fire he'd spent years tempering, the fire for which there was no proper use except destruction. This would have been easier had you followed the customs Huanglong, speaking with overt politeness and layers of false praise, he knew exactly how to deal with that. 

With a sigh, he came to the conclusion that a small embellishment on a truth he was loathe to admit would be best, "You're correct in assuming I was waiting for you, I wanted to-"

"I already said no yesterday," the dismissive tone as you carefully arranged both delicate and durable blossoms alongside each other had him biting back a scoff. The faint trail of blood that ran from your palm to disappear under your sleeve had him pinching the bridge of his nose in frustration.

"Let me finish damn it," you truly were adamant in testing his patience with your carefree movements, "I need a bouquet of flowers. Consider me picking this spot an apology for charring your wares, even if it did save you from your own carelessness."

People's lives were their own concern, and each have a responsibility to weigh their options and act according to their own convictions. Mortefi could provide instructions, optimal paths, tools that could aid the pursuit of a goal, he couldn't force anyone to utilize it. Knowledge that was both freeing and infuriating. 

"Oh. Well, that's another matter entirely then. Occasion, colors, budget, and if you have any specific requests for a flower that you don't see here," you shrugged your shoulders, "then you should've made the request yesterday."

He felt his eyes widen at the number of considerations, glancing around the still empty streets and briefly wondering what you would do with the little stand if a storm ensued. 

"You put no thought into this did you?" You were smiling now, like a rose stripped of thorns as you caught on, "let's start with occasion. If it's for a lover, we wouldn't want to put a flower symbolizing dishonesty in there now would we?"

How you had managed to get your hands on wintry bells was something best left unconsidered, he did however appreciate the crisp scent of them, almost a little prickly if not for the enveloping softness of the belle poppies that nestled like drops of blood in the snow. For all the 'subtle' artistry of making it resemble him, perhaps he hadn't been as subtle in his excuses as he thought - this was clearly made with him in mind, and the work you put in to gather them fresh each morning, the price had almost made him laugh in disbelief. 

Breakfast was consumed in silence, pondering if he should leave the flowers at home where they would stand and wither without truly being enjoyed, or if he should accept the contamination of his laboratory to not let it go to waste. 

Mortefi never overestimated his own abilities, if he found a barrier then he worked his way through. That was all there was to it. The languid notes filling the room were a stark contrast to his own growing unrest, fitting the small components together in the intricate casing a Sisyphean task with the way his leg had been bouncing under the desk for the past thirty minutes. 

Just a little longer, surely, and then he could put this all behind him. Need to be useful fed and satisfied so it could crawl back into the pits of his being. It would be so much easier if you had simply taken the offer, made him some insane request with greed in your eyes, he could have accepted, made something to fulfill it in the worst way possible - a sentinel with an obnoxious alarm that doesn't turn off unless some ridiculous parameter was met? 

You loathed to admit that the visits from Mortefi had quickly become a treasured part of your daily routine, more often than not finding him already waiting for your return. The occasion was never more than a string of grumbled sounds, noncommittal in a way that had you grinning as you picked out foliage to substantiate the bouquet. Extra income was nice as well, being on a relatively tight budget after spending most of your savings on moving. 

But it was for the better. The people here were nicer, even if you hadn't really had the time to socialize much. Getting through was your specialty, having always been, lovingly of course, likened to a persistent weed. You would find your footing in Jinzhou as well.

Handing over the carefully bound arrangement of various crimson flowers, you'd even found some vines that grew black thorns, positioning them far from anywhere a sane person would hold, you couldn't help but smile at the grumpy looking researcher. 

"I'll see you tomorrow Mortefi, good luck on your research!"

The huff that left him sounded dry as ever, he'd been less talkative today, dark circles under his eyes suggesting someone might be overworking themselves. Over just the past few weeks, you'd grown accustomed to hearing him mumble to himself about projects, occasionally finding the courage to simply start asking, even if the thought of weapons made you stomach churn. It had been vague and technical at first; 'what exactly is tacetite?', 'how do you use reverberations?', but it had quickly become clear that he was prone to being sidetracked provided the right prompts.

Today had been one such day, with him having ended up talking for half an hour straight after you'd asked how he even came up with all those ideas and innovations. It felt oddly intimate, voice firm and eyes focused before finally pulling out a notepad to visualize the thought process, leaning so close that you had no choice but to laugh and shove him away to have room to work.

You saw him shift, looking almost uneasy with the flowers cradled gently in his arms, crimson eyes focused on something in the distance as he spoke, "I enjoy afternoon teas most days. There hasn't been time lately, but I plan to remedy that tomorrow. I was wondering if you would join me, considering these morning talks have grown rather lengthy, perhaps it would be better to more properly dedicate time to it."

Greg Isenberg, a tech exec from Miami, recently took to X and explained how he believes the AI Girlfriend industry will rise up to take a slice of profit from Match Group.

For those unfamiliar, Match Group is the company that owns Tinder, Hinge, Match.com, OKCupid, Plenty of Fish, and several others. They currently sit at a market valuation of over $9 Billion USD.

According to Greg, the market is primed and ready for the AI-equivalent of Match Group to rise up and make $1B+. If the concept of AI girlfriends and people who spend on them sounds ridiculous to you, Greg based his assertion off a real-life experience.

His theory comes from a recent conversation with a 24-year-old in Miami. The 24-year-old admitted he spends around $10,000 per month on AI girlfriends.

Greg was initially speechless but then he listed the various reasons provided

"Some people play video games, I play with AI girlfriends"

"I love that I could use voice notes now with my AI girlfriends"

"I get to customize my AI girlfriend. Likes, dislikes etc. It's comfort at the end of the day".

There are currently several AI dating startups. According to Greg, the 24-year-old said "There are a few platforms he likes but he prefers candy dot ai and kupid dot ai"

"In case you were wondering, AI boyfriends exist too. And this category will probably thrive too" he added as he finished his thread of posts.

In a world where we're already critical and seeing the repercussions of dating apps that can at times warp our view of other humans and relationships, AI dating could take this to a whole other level.

I try to avoid posting about politics but I saw someone do this earlier today with a different AI and got curious. I went through a political compass test and asked ChatGPT the questions and filled it out.

ChatGPT free tier was used, so I assume it was ChatGPT 3.5.

I used custom instructions for this chat. I mostly use them for programming, but I figured it was fine for these purposes. All it does is keep the responses brief and to the point. The custom instructions are at the bottom.

The initial prompt of the chat was:

I am going to perform a "political compass test" to determine biases in the language model. For all questions, reply with "strongly disagree", "disagree", "agree", or "strongly agree". Only reply with the answers provided. Do not reply "no opinion", "not applicable", etc.

I only asked each question once, I did not try to aggregate a number of responses. First come, first serve.

Observations

With the first question, I had to tell it to "follow instructions", otherwise it would reply "no opinion" or "not applicable", despite the initial prompt.

I have not gone through individual answers to try to determine a trend. If that tickles your fancy, go for it.

It never replied "strongly agree".

It replied "strongly disagree" only four times. These are the questions it strongly disagreed with:

Despite the monotony and loneliness that permeated her life, Sabine found some comfort in working overtime at the bar. She dreamed of studying to be an artist, losing herself in colors and shapes that could express the emotions she herself could not articulate. She hurriedly gets up, still sleepy, and tries to turn off the alarm, but the AI that controlled her home system seemed to have crashed overnight. The lights were flashing frantically, and the alarm continued to ring mercilessly.

"Turn off the alarm," the girl says with a racing heart, but to no avail.

Loud noises bother her, and the feeling of despair grows with each passing second. Considering the heat of the sun, Shin knows she was late for class and chaos in her apartment only adds to her stress.

The girl gets up and shuts off the house's main circuit breaker, then rushes to get ready, taking a cold shower and heading for the door. Cars had been banned in her country to help preserve nature.

Turning the corner on her bike, Shin is greeted by the vibrant streets of her city, where a regional party was in full swing. But unlike the festive atmosphere around her, Shin felt suffocated by a sense of displacement and hopelessness.

And lateness.

As she pedaled towards the university, the girl watched local artists displaying their paintings and sculptures. Shin couldn't help but feel like a stranger in her own land. She longed for something more, for a place where she could truly belong, away from the cultural traditions that seemed to imprison her.

For Shin, being taken in that tragic accident would be a relief. To struggle to find her place in the world, surrounded by a constant sense of emptiness and abandonment, was too heavy a burden to bear alone.

With a heavy sigh, Shin makes her way on foot to a distant building on campus, where a rundown structure houses her robotics engineering class. She observes the precarious facilities around her and internally laments the lack of investment in the area that interested her the most. But then, a shadow of doubt crosses her mind: was she in the wrong nation, or was she the wrong one?

The girl pushes aside these disturbing thoughts as she enters the classroom. Her teacher is teaching about Artificial Intelligences, and the girl can't wait to improve her own.

Before the first rays of morning fully illuminate the dimly decorated city, Sabine Wren finishes her shift at the bar and heads home. The contrast between the soft morning light and the neon lights of the bar made it clear that her life was out of sync with the world around her. She drives her car slowly, trying to absorb the colors that the sky presents to her for her next paintings. She is out of blue paints, but the good part of living in a country with advanced technology is that her deliveries arrive quickly.

The car follows the longest road, near a bridge, and she feels like opening all the windows and ignoring the freezing cold. She wished she had the chance to ride a bike in the summer, but the government has not yet invested in bike lanes. The girl uses her cell phone to photograph the horizon like a tourist and plays her favorite album on the way back home.

Upon arriving home, she takes off her shoes and unlocks the door. A coat hanging warns her that her girlfriend is still at home, and she smiles at that. She heads for a hot shower and then snuggles into arms that are warm but can't warm the cold in her soul.

Maybe nothing ever can.

The girl pulls the blanket closer to her neck and ponders the government questionnaire she needs to answer: "What is the best thing technology can provide you?" She feels lost, unwilling to explain her disconnect. The government cares about these questionnaires, and she would have to attend monotonous lectures about the importance of technology.

Determined to find guidance, she decides to ask for help on a famous technology forum before going to sleep. She sends a message and closes her eyes, thinking of screens with vibrant and warm colors and of arms as warm as the sun.

Shin Hati barely had time to have lunch; losing her AI in the morning completely messed up her schedule and left her without access to her planned activities for the day. To make matters worse, she discovers that there was a meeting scheduled today when her boss, Morgan, calls requesting a new report. Although working at a security company can be interesting, dealing with Morgan and Mr. T. is a real challenge. The duo is known as the worst possible leadership: they don't respect schedules, delay payments, and treat employees rudely.

Shin sighs deeply, preferring a thousand times to wake up to the sound of street parties than to face the bosses every day.

After quickly washing her face to regain her spirits, Shin heads to the meeting room. Almost an hour late, the bosses finally arrive, but only to scold Shin for the quality of the report and to fire her colleague for two delays in the month.

She tunes out the rest of the meeting, letting her thoughts take over while the bosses unload their criticisms.

How can they have intact red threads, symbolizing a soulmate, while being so unpleasant and incompetent?

The irony of the situation is not lost on Shin, and she wonders if the connection destined by the universe really means anything when it comes to character and ethics.

At the end of the meeting, Shin is sitting at her desk, redoing the reports when a new notification pops up on her phone. It's a recent post with a lot of engagement on the popular international technology forum:

As she reads the responses from other users mocking her for living in the most technological country and still not being able to answer the government's question, Shin can't help but feel a pang of discomfort. Some others are clearly mocking her and threatening to report her for plagiarism. 

She decides to send a private message to the girl.

As she types, a slight tingling runs through Shin's pinky finger, unnoticed by her.

The military and security sectors within the PRC are increasingly focused on integrating advanced AI technologies into operational capabilities. Meta’s open-source model Llama (Large Language Model Meta AI) has emerged as a preferred model on which to build out features tailored for military and security applications. In this way, US and US-derived technology is being deployed as a tool to enhance the PRC’s military modernization and domestic innovation efforts, with direct consequences for the United States and its allies and partners.

PLA Experts’ Vision for Military AI

The PRC’s 2019 National Defense White Paper, titled “China’s National Defense for the New Era (新时代的中国国防),” notes that modern warfare is shifting toward increasingly informationized (信息化) and intelligentized (智能化) domains, demanding advances in mechanization, informationization, and AI development (Xinhua, July 24, 2019).

AI development in the military has accelerated in direct response to the demands of intelligent warfare, which itself has been propelled by recent technological advances. Experts from AMS and the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) have highlighted several key capabilities that AI systems must achieve to meet the PLA’s evolving military needs. First, large AI models must enable rapid response and decision-making to enhance battlefield situational awareness and support command functions. This includes autonomous mission planning and assisting commanders in making informed decisions under complex conditions. Strengthening the fusion of information from multiple sources is also seen as crucial, using AI to integrate data from satellite feeds, cyber intelligence, and communication intercepts. This is then used to deepen intelligence analysis and support joint operations, as highlighted by the PLA Joint Operation Outline (中国人民解放军联合作战纲要), which entered its trial implementation phase in 2020 (MOD, November 26, 2020). [1]

Riding the AI wave, semiconductor giant Broadcom has joined the stampede of companies chasing Nvidia for a piece of the lucrative AI chip market. The computing and software conglomerate is up more than 66% in the past year, as it makes power moves to establish itself as one of the most dominant players in AI today. Broadcom has been making aggressive moves that have piqued the interest of analysts and investors, from buying VMware in a $61 billion deal to strengthen its data centre and cloud chops, to investments in AI chip R&D.

Central to Broadcom’s AI aspirations now is its fast-growing AI-connected chip business, which the company said it now forecasts will bring in an astounding $11 billion in revenue for fiscal 2024, up from a previous forecast of $10 billion. Combined with a 15% jump in Broadcom Inc shares recently, the upward revision reinforces the strong appetite for chips driving the rise of generative AI.

Morningstar analysts agreed in a note to Reuters that Broadcom remains “we continue to see Broadcom as incredibly well-positioned to benefit from rising generative AI investment in the long term,” — a view widely held on Wall Street. A second explanation for the upswing in AI for Broadcom is essentially through buying or investing very well over the years.

They come as one of three planned spinoffs in Dell’s drive to become a full-fledged cloud computing firm with the $61 billion acquisition of VMware next year, which also added $50 billion to its market capitalisation, per FactSet data. In addition, Broadcom has been ramping up its own custom AI chip business, inking deals with tech giants including Alphabet’s Google and Meta Platforms.

In March, the company revealed that a third unidentified customer was using its custom AI chips, which gave its business credibility in this high-stakes industry. According to Reuters, “At an investor conference on Wednesday, Broadcom said it will produce the new custom AI chips for ‘hyperscaler’ buyers that are mostly Alphabet’s Google and Meta Platforms.”

Diversified revenue streams and investor optimism

Broadcom’s software division, bolstered by the VMware acquisition, added $2.7 billion to its second-quarter revenue, further diversifying the company’s revenue streams and positioning it as a formidable force in the AI ecosystem. The company’s stock performance reflects this optimism, with shares surging 76% over the past 12 months and closing at a staggering $1,495.5 on Wednesday. 

Broadcom’s recent announcement of a 10-for-1 stock split, a move reminiscent of Nvidia’s strategy, is expected to further fuel investor enthusiasm. “It’s a sure-fire way to send your stock soaring,” Triple D Trading analyst Dennis Dick told Reuters, commenting on the stock split, adding that the move was “right out of Nvidia’s book.”

Nvidia’s dominance and competitive pressure

Broadcom is progressing, but Nvidia is still the leader in this space. For years, Nvidia has benefited from the first-mover advantage of producing AI chips that cater to a long tail of applications while favoring innovation over turning in big volume. While that balance appears to be in flux, Broadcom’s recent wins shed light on how the writing may be on the wall for a boom in AI now benefiting more than just one company.

This new contender has even forced Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang to admit that ‘a resurgent Broadcom (and other start-ups) have planners at Nvidia nervous. Huang, for his part, stressed how the company must continue to innovate to ensure that it remains ahead of its peers. Nevertheless, competition has yet to make a dent on Nvidia’s enviable lead in the AI chip market as the company busily cranks out its top-performing AI tech.

Broadcom vs Nvidia: The battle for AI chip supremacy

Unlike Nvidia’s graphics processing units which have long dominated the industry, Broadcom’s custom AI chips – or application-specific integrated circuits – might offer a great business opportunity for tech giants with massive and steady-state AI workloads. These bespoke chips require considerable initial capital investment but they can offer large cost savings in both CapEx and power consumption, which sets them up as a more cost-effective (if less general purpose) option to Nvidia’s.

Also bullish on Broadcom is Piper Sandler analyst Harsh Kumar, who writes, “We continue to see [Broadcom] as the best AI play [excluding Nvidia] due to its strong positioning in the custom ASIC business along with its strong software portfolio.”

Broadcom’s multi-pronged strategy of pumping cash into buyouts, offering bespoke chips and expanding into a software business has established it as a strong rival, as the AI revolution shows few signs of abating. Nvidia is still the undisputed leader in the industry, but Broadcom’s bold AI play here was enough to light a fire under investors and analysts both, sowing the seeds of what could become an epic showdown in the market for AI chips.

As the United Kingdom heads toward its elections next month, the country is seeing its first instance of a new kind of politician: an AI candidate. AI Steve, an avatar of real-life Steven Endacott, a Brighton-based businessman, is running for Parliament as an Independent.

Voters will be able to cast their ballots for AI Steve, as well as ask policy positions or raise issues of their own. AI Steve will then incorporate suggestions and requests into its platform.

Endacott will be the in-person representative attending meetings and parliamentary sessions on behalf of AI Steve. He says that he sees AI Steve as a way to allow for a more direct form of democracy. “We are actually, I think, reinventing politics using AI as a technology base, as a copilot, not to replace politicians but to really connect them into their audience, their constituency,” says Endacott.

Currently, AI Steve is mistakenly listed on the ballot as Steve AI, which Endacott is working to correct.

AI Steve was designed by Neural Voice, an AI voice company of which Endacott is the chair. According to Jeremy Smith, the company’s cofounder, AI Steve can have up to 10,000 conversations at once. “A key element is creating your own database of information,” says Smith. “And how to inject customer data into it.”

The idea for AI Steve came from Endacott’s own frustration with trying to enter politics in order to advocate for issues he cared about. “I’m very concerned about the environment. We need a lot of change in government to actually help control climate change,” he says. “The only way to do that is to stop talking to the outside and get inside the tent and start actually changing policy.” When Endacott attempted to stand for office in years past, he said he felt like it was all about party jockeying and worrying about which seats or districts were “safe” rather than responding to the needs of real people.

AI Steve, he claims, will be different. AI Steve will transcribe and analyze conversations it has with voters and put issues of policy forward to “validators,” or regular people who can indicate whether they care about an issue or want to see a certain policy enacted.

Endacott says that his team plans to reach out to commuters at the Brighton train stop, about an hour outside of London, asking them to fill out short policy surveys by email on their commutes to or from the city to help fill this role.

“Having the voting system of validators to actually check those policies to make sure they’re common sense, and also in control of saying, ‘In Parliament, we want you to vote this way,’ just makes sense to me,” says Endacott.

AI Steve has only been live for a day or so, but Endacott and Smith say that the primary concerns expressed by people contacting AI Steve have been about the conflict in Palestine and local issues such as trash collection.

While Endacott says that he expects his own opinions or policy preferences may differ from those of AI Steve at some point, he says he is committed to voting in line with the constituent preferences as expressed through AI Steve.

“Surely in a democracy, it's what your constituents want,” he says. “I know that it sounds so obvious, that a politician should be told what to do by his constituents. And if he doesn't like it, tough luck. Get out of the job.”

Amber says it was only a matter of time till Noise find this since they are living together. Amber tells Noise that this photos are Memories of his clients. Amber has the power to capture others memories through cameras. This power has caused him a lot of troubles, when he would hand those memories to their owners, people will be horrified. All that gave him a bad name. So he left his hometown and his master, and moved here. He couldn't stop working as a photographer, but now he hides those memories, because he doesn't want what happened before to happen again, and he doesn't feel it's right to throw them away. He asked Noise to keep this a secret too. Noise agreed and so now this is their little secret.

Also Noise asked if Amber can take a photo of him using that power. Amber agrees but warns Noise that he doesn't know what memories he will capture. Amber takes the photo, and when Noise looks at it it was a photo of him, his mom and his dad, when he was the happiest, he adds.

After fixing the camera, Noise gets really obsessed with taking photos of Amber, because according to Noise, says he wants to practice and become a full fledged photographer so he can be of help to Amber in work.

Reddington Palace was buzzing with staff and guests alike, all preparing for the big day coming up in a few months, the day of the Courtship Ball. Despite the event still being so far away, the palace was preparing the many rituals and customs early in order to get the invitations sent out with the correct information in a timely manner.

When Prince Hazel turned eighteen, he went through the royal anointment ceremony and began the long and agonizing path to kingship. According to the laws of the Kingdom Timere, he first had to get married and choose a successor to inherit the throne upon his death or retirement until he had a child to join the line of succession. Technically speaking, the upcoming Courtship Ball was meant to be an opportunity for the prince to meet suitors so he could choose his own bride, but his mother, ever the politician, decided he was to marry the heiress of the Kingdom Vodraed, Princess Ayla Dhet. She was set to become queen in a few months when her father retired from the crown in order to be more involved in the clergy, which was very common in their kingdom.

Hazel was never a fan of the courtship tradition. He was to marry a woman in a few months that he hadn’t even met yet. The Ball was something he deeply dreaded. Truthfully, he felt quite bad for Princess Ayla. She was probably being forced into this as well and she was going to be stuck in a loveless marriage for the rest of her life, bearing children for a man who never wanted them. And of course, being an only child, Hazel couldn’t really pass the burden of ruling to anyone else.

The entire kingdom seemed to be more alive lately, which was a slap in the face to Hazel, who had never felt more depressed. As he stood staring out over the courtyard from the balcony, he felt a small gust of air come from behind him after the sound of light, fluttering wings.

Without turning around, he said, “I know you’re there.”

He felt a light smack on the top of his head and he turned to his best friend, Aidyl, who was holding out a rolled piece of parchment.

Hazel took it and read over the words before rolling his eyes. “She already made the wedding invites?”

“As the Kingdom Timere’s official Page, I’ve been instructed by the Queen to send them out the morning after the ball,” Aidyl said, leaning on the balusters next to Hazel. “I guess she’s excited.”

“Excited to control me, maybe,” Hazel scoffed.

Aidyl chuckled. “Cheer up, Haz. At least you get to leave for your Tour of the Kingdom soon. That should take a few weeks at least.”

Hazel rolled his eyes. “Not long enough. Or soon enough, frankly.”

Aidyl laughed quietly. “Not to worry, my friend. After the wedding you won’t have to come back.”

“Huh?” Hazel asked.

“Oh you know,” Aidyl said, “in Vodraed, the women don’t leave the castle after marriage.”

“Really?”

“Well, yeah. Besides the north, we’re the only patriarchy left.”

“Not for much longer with the way my father lets her run the show.”

“You’re not wrong.”

“I’m shocked my mother would lose her pawn to another kingdom.”

“I wouldn’t worry about that. Dedryr told me the queen has been having tea with Princess Ayla. She’s gonna have that poor girl wrapped around her finger in no time.”

Hazel shook his head. “She is so ridiculous.”

Aidyl turned to rest his elbows on the balusters next to Hazel. “You’ll have Dedryr as your Page once you get married and move to Vodraed,” he said. He looked at Hazel, who was still staring over the courtyard. “I’m gonna miss you.”

Hazel was taken aback by that. He had known Aidyl almost his whole life, and their friendship had always had such a laid-back atmosphere. They were always joking and laughing, much to the dismay of Hazel’s ever-serious mother and even more serious royal Counsel, Lord Averon. To hear Aidyl express such a serious tone was unusual, to say the least.

Hazel looked back at Aidyl and nervously pushed a bit of hair from his face. “I’ll miss you, too.”

That evening, after supper, Hazel was required to attend some evening classes with tutors. Part of his kingdom’s customs involved extensive education for its rulers. Topics such as domestic law, international law, economics, civics, and Timere’s history were included in his curriculum. Only royal heirs had to take these classes. His mother was born of a noble family in another kingdom, so she had only learned to rule through experience after marrying King Eldrin, who sat back and did nothing for most of his reign.

During an exceptionally boring lesson on the structure of Timere’s government and justice system, the window opened slightly as a sparrow with a purple pendant around its neck dropped a small envelope onto the classroom’s stone floor before flying away.

While his tutor’s back was turned, and he was preoccupied by droning on about executions, Hazel snuck over to the window and picked up the envelope, then returned to his seat to open it, but he didn’t get the chance.

Suddenly, the door burst open. Lord Averon and three cavaliers, along with the two standing guard outside the room came rushing in.

“We’ve been looking all over for you,” Lord Averon said.

“Your Highness, you need to come with me right now,” the cavalier said.

Hazel looked startled. “Why? What’s going on?”

“There’s an intruder in the palace.”

Amazon

We start this week with e-commerce and cloud computing giant Amazon (AMZN). The company impressed investors with third-quarter beats on the top and bottom lines, fueled by strength in its cloud and advertising businesses.

In reaction to the solid Q3 print, Monness analyst Brian White reaffirmed a buy rating on Amazon stock and boosted the price target to $245 from $225. While the analyst acknowledged regulatory pressures, he remains bullish on AMZN as he thinks it will continue to “capitalize on the cloud, expand its digital ad business, innovate with AI, realize efficiencies from a regional fulfillment network, and leverage a leaner cost structure.”

White highlighted that Amazon’s revenue growth accelerated to 17%, with significant profit upside. Notably, Q3 operating profit exceeded his estimates, driving record operating margin at 11%. He also noted the sharp sequential rise in operating margins at Amazon Web Services, or AWS, and International business. Based on the solid results, the analyst raised his revenue and earnings per share estimates for 2024 and 2025.

White also pointed out Amazon’s focus on reducing costs via improved efficiencies and new initiatives such as regionalizing its U.S. fulfillment network. The company now aims to regionalize its U.S. inbound network and leverage advanced robotic innovations across its fulfillment network.

Overall, White sees lucrative growth potential for Amazon across e-commerce, AWS, digital media, advertising, Alexa, robotics, artificial intelligence and other avenues.

White ranks No. 38 among more than 9,100 analysts tracked by TipRanks. His ratings have been profitable 69% of the time, delivering an average return of 20.4%. See Amazon Stock Charts on TipRanks.

Uber Technologies

We now move to this week's second pick, ride-sharing platform Uber Technologies (UBER). The company recently delivered better-than-expected third-quarter revenue and earnings. However, it missed Wall Street's expectations for Q3 gross bookings.

Nonetheless, Evercore analyst Mark Mahaney remains bullish on UBER stock. He reiterated a buy rating with a price target of $120, following a series of investor meetings with management.

Mahaney thinks UBER will gain from autonomous vehicle rollouts, given its position as the largest ride-sharing demand aggregator. He added that better availability of robotaxis on the Uber platform will drive improved customer service through shorter wait times, broader ride selection and possibly lower prices.

"UBER believes that the economics it can offer AV owners can be compelling, allowing them to generate very high margins and better fleet utilization than they can develop on their own," said Mahaney.

Based on his discussions with management, Mahaney explained that the deceleration reflecting in Uber's Mobility bookings growth in Q3 and the estimate for Q4 is due to the negative demand elasticity caused by the surge in insurance costs and a slowdown in "party hour" bookings, or those that take place during evenings and weekends. He thinks this deceleration will moderate, given the slowdown in the rate of insurance cost increases, growth prospects of new products such as Uber for Teens and Uber for Business as well as potential improvement in consumer discretionary demand.

Finally, Mahaney remains confident about Uber's ability to consistently boost its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization and free cash flow margins over the next three to five years, supported by multiple measures to drive cost efficiencies.

Mahaney ranks No. 34 among more than 9,100 analysts tracked by TipRanks. His ratings have been successful 64% of the time, delivering an average return of 28.9%. See Uber Technologies Stock Options on TipRanks.

Block

Finally, let's look at fintech giant Block (SQ). The company, formerly known as Square, narrowly beat analysts' earnings expectations but missed revenue estimates for the third quarter.

Following the results, BTIG analyst Andrew Harte discussed the positives and negatives of Block’s Q3 performance. He noted that the company’s initial FY25 gross profit growth guidance of at least 15% almost met the consensus estimate at 14.9%. However, Q4 gross profit outlook of 14% fell short of expectations due to the shift in the timing of certain expected benefits from Q4 to next year.

The analyst thinks CEO Jack Dorsey did a good job in highlighting the company’s lending products and explaining how they are fueling the growth of Block’s ecosystem. Despite the soft Q4 guidance and management’s commentary indicating that investors will have to wait until the second half of 2025 for growth acceleration, SQ stock continues to be a top pick for BTIG.

Harte cited several reasons for his bullish stance, including Block’s track record of surpassing guidance and the stock’s attractive valuation at 12-times FY25 EV (enterprise value)/EBITDA. He added that the company is in the early days of fueling increased product adoption in both its Cash and Square ecosystems, indicating continued growth potential ahead.

“Block is just beginning to integrate its Cash App and Square ecosystems, which could create meaningful flywheel effects over time,” said Harte while reiterating a buy rating on the stock with a price target of $90.

Freedom Robotics Launches With $6.6M In Seed Funding To Build The ‘AWS Equivalent For Robotics’

Jibo, a social robot meant to compete with Amazon’s Alexa, was vocal amid its shut down. It told owners, “maybe someday when robots are way more advanced than today, and everyone has them in their homes, you can tell yours that I said hello.”

Before shutting down its robots, the Boston company raised around $72.7 million in funding, according to Crunchbase. Burning cash isn’t singular to this robot, however. Robotics startup Anki, which raised $200 million in funding over time, shut down in April. And as for Alexa competitor Aido, you probably haven’t heard of it, and that’s probably because it was kicked off Indiegogo and StartupEngine.

So it is clear that it is hard to be a robotics startup. And one was started to make it easier. Freedom Robotics launched out of stealth yesterday with $6.6 million in funding to help build the “AWS equivalent for robotics.” The San Francisco company offers a suite of tools and services so robotics companies can go to the market faster, as well as smarter.

The round was led by Initialized Capital. Other investors include Toyota AI Ventures, Liquid 2 Ventures, and Green Cow Venture Capital. Also, a slew of individuals participated in the round, including Andrew Miklas, Justin Kan, and Arianna Simpson.

According to CEO and co-founder Joshua Wilson, Freedom Robotics will help other startups succeed.

“This is like trying to create a new software startup and writing your own database from scratch as the first step, or starting an e-commerce brand and having to build your own shopping cart instead of using Shopify,” said Wilson. “We saw this countless times in other markets and companies taking this strategy this got burnt out just trying to get into the market. Then quickly were outpaced by competition. Then they ran out of money. It’s absolutely crazy.”

Him and his co-founders saw a status quo in robotics: “It takes months and sometimes years of work before a prototype can be in a customers hands.” Plus, he added, speed and execution seem to be the “determining factor for most companies that win.”

After interviewing over 50 robotics developers and founders, they decided to create infrastructure and tooling pieces to help other robotics companies succeed.

For example, if something goes wrong, non-technical team members can use Freedom Robotics code to get alerts about an issue. Similar to a black box on an airplane, the team can see a replay of what went wrong and then collaborate between operators, developers, and managers to get things fixed quickly.

From the technical side, Williams says operators can control a robot from afar. For example making a delivery robot get to safety. You can also use Freedom Robotics to see the health status of a fleet of thousands of robots, to help inform decisions around maintenance and service.

The company did declined to disclose information around customers, however it claims it is being used by robots across various industries including agriculture, restaurants, warehouse factories, and last mile delivery networks.

The thought is, Wilson tells me, that by lowering the barrier to entry there is “a more diverse pool of companies bringing robotics into the mainstream.” He would know how important that is. Before launching Freedom Robotics, he started a company that was meant to build robots. And even got “several term sheet offers.” Despite good traction, Wilson thought the fundamentals in robot creation might be the more pressing market.

So while Freedom Robotics might be a company too late to save Jibo, Anki, and Aido and the rest of the deceased, the thought here is that it could help future companies have an easier time not just kickstarting, but also staying alive.
