In honor of Mermay I just had a THOUGHT about abyssal mer Jason.

Like, he’s such a little cutie patootie when Bruce first finds him and integrates him into his little clan consisting of an acrobatic reef mer and and older, regular shallows mer.

And Jason is so smol and cute and fits right along the curve of Bruce’s tail in a way that makes him essentially vanish from the sight of predators. And, sure, his scales look a bit sturdier and stranger than the ones they know from other species of mer. And his tail fin is a bioluminescent veil of delicate membranes he uses to lure curious little fish and eat them, not to mention his tail is about thrice as long than that of other mers. But he’s just so adorable and obviously starving that Bruce, Dick, AND Alfred all disregard the strange little things about their newest pod member adding up in favor of absolutely coddling him. Mer children are rare enough as is, having one that’s so obviously malnourished is basically a crime.

So Jason grows. A lot. And then he dies.

And then he comes back just as a couple fishermen are ecstatic over having caught a live mer, water churning, and suddenly this absolute leviathan rises up from the ocean. Easily ten times the size of the fishermen’s ship.

Tia (short for Nautia) is having a time. Not a good time. A really bad time, actually. Sure, her wounds have become scars and even if her torn fin aches she can still swim, but the abyssal plain has little in the way of food for a reef mer, and the algae clinging to the hull of the sunken landwalker ship was her last hope. Too bad the ship belonged to someone else.

So yes, she is having a very bad day.

Good thing Seiche is there to make it worse!

Apparently I have good timing lmao I just finished this up when I saw that the fic updated!! So of course I had to go read the new chapter! All the adorable little babies!!

Anyways, idk if this is entirely done but he's good for now, might get some little touch ups as I go along, but we'll see.

I actually ended up doing a decent amount of research for this design, mostly via youtube videos of people playing the mod. But hey, it helped with some of the design aspects that were hidden in my main reference pic lol.

Oooooo is the reason they found baby leviathan Jason so alone and starved because leviathans are solo creatures?

So when Jason is adopted he got these big oll eyes because

They’re all together???

They all form a school???

No fighting over food or territory???

No throwing the litter out when it’s big enough to fend for itself???

Huh???

Jason secretly really likes this development

Yes Leviathans are mostly solitary mers! And they’re largely a myth, too! So that’s why none of the bats clocked Jason as an abyssal mer. Much less a leviathan!

They don’t usually abandon their young at this age though, so something had to happen for Jason to be on his own. Especially so far away from the deep waters.

But Jason’s never seen a mer take care of offspring that aren’t their own. Much less form an entire school of non related mers that neither fight for dominance, nor for food. They even forgo their own meal to feed him.

And Bruce fights tooth and claw to protect the group! So does Dick! And they don’t even try to use Jason as bait even though he’s still small and new and not related to any of them!

So, a novel experience all around. Especially because these strange mer are super small in comparison to what Jason is used to. And super squishy. They get scratches from pointy rocks, for crying out loud. It kinda scares him how vulnerable they are. But he knows he’ll grow up big, so he’ll repay their kindness eventually.

For now he’s content to stay wrapped around Bruce’s tail, safe and protected. 🌊💚

What once was thought to be mythological creatures have proven to be much more than that. Mercreatures — the rulers of the seven seas. All inhabit their powers from a different place. The water itself, the celestials, the flora, or the fauna. All mercreatures share powers, although depending on where they are from and where they harvest their powers, they may have specialties in more areas than others.

It’s a normal full moon ceremony — four mermaids, Maliah, Nyxie, Nile, and Ravenna are harmonizing, singing the mermaid enchanting song. Suddenly, a heavy force drops into the moon pool — a human boy. Fearful that the land man may gain powers they they had fought for, they drag him to land, leaving him in the shore. Whilst exploring, they find the same land boy using powers only merfolk have. The land boy, Zac, must be stopped. The four mermaids now are on a quest to take their power back.
