I got to play a couple games of SINODA a few weeks back and loved it. This is a new, as yet unreleased abstract strategy game from local Canadian game designers, Bill and Scott of BS Games (@bsgamesca).
Sinoda is a very versatile, deep strategic game offering a very different feeling depending on the player count. In some ways this game feels like Chess but more interesting and much easier to learn how to play. But it has that same deep complex gameplay of push and pull, feint, probe, and sacrifice, setup and attack that is provided with a good game of chess.
Very well designed and great game that is really interesting and fun. Two thumbs way up for this one.
Find out more about Sinoda at https://bsgames.ca/ @bsgamesca

Daughter Jessica is back in town for the holidays and beyond and that means that, in addition to weekly explorations of the west desert, there is always a game on the table. In this case we brought out Megiddo, an abstract strategy game first published in 1985. It has withstood the sands of time well and it’s still a thoughtful and simple game to play. #playerofgames #megiddo #abstractstrategygames #abstractstrategy https://www.instagram.com/p/CIOum4ShVaM/?igshid=6tn4gypeag2h

Finity goes mobile on @boardgamearena ! My opponent (yellow) has more rings on the board (usually a good sign for them) but I think I'm getting him cornered. I think it's looking good for me. #boardgames #abstractstrategy #abstractstrategygames #strategygame #strategygames #tabletopgames #tabletopgaming #onlinegame #onlinegames #mobilegames https://www.instagram.com/p/B7GsVONBCvR/?igshid=1o29f86i989rm

To commemorate “Don’t Step on a Bee Day” today’s #gameoftheday is Hive, the board game without a board. Hive is a marvellous 2 player abstract strategy game where you have to surround the other players’ Queen Bee to win. #hive #lankygameruk #bgg #lguk #gotd #dontsteponabeeday #abstractstrategygame #wherestheboard (at Lytham St Annes, Lancashire) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCc8cr_hD6N/?igshid=dsbz7k45i7yp

Gizmodo Monday Puzzle: Let’s Make a Date
I imagine Gizmodo readers will not approve of a Luddite take, but I’m going to risk my skin and wax nostalgic for physical calendars. Do you remember Page-A-Day calendars? Each morning you’d tear a page to reveal the new date and some little reward for waking up—a comic, a vocab word, a brainteaser (!). We used to… Read more…

SUM8 is an abstract strategy game for 2 players where players are placing these wonderful curved tiles with numbers on each end. When placing tiles, players must match the numbers on the connecting edges or the total of the connection must equal 8. Players get points for connections and bonus points if the complete an "8 shape" with the tile they place. Points are deducted at the end of the game for each piece you couldn't place. Very clever and puzzley! Designed by #IlesGuran and #LeanneGray and published by#TurnupGames (@turnupgames). Launching on Kickstarter in February next year. #AbstractStrategyGames #8 #pips #tiles #KickstarterGames #SUM8 https://www.instagram.com/p/CXP5_45LsT7/?utm_medium=tumblr

One of several old school games my daughter gave me for Christmas: Fanorona, the at least 400 year old national abstract-strategy game of Madagascar. This copy is in mint condition and dates from the ancient period of big hair and Bon-Jovi...the mid-1980’s. This is the set-up position and the play itself is fast and aggressive. #abstractstrategygames #abstractstrategy #fanorona #madagascar #madagascar🇲🇬 #clayhausphotography #playerofgames https://www.instagram.com/p/B6kNMg2hluo/?igshid=bn2zh5bg4zbh

... and then, just like chess, the end-game got dull and disappointing. Very disappointing! In the end, we decided that this one wasn't worth the time. I'd rather spend the time playing Hey, That's My Fish (also chess-like but far superior in my opinion). Duelling gets added to my For Trade List. But look at that vintage box cover art! #BoardGaming #TabletopGamer #DiceGame #VintageGame #BoardGameGeek #AbstractStrategyGames #AnalogGamer #Chess #Duell

Gizmodo Monday Puzzle: The World’s Simplest Game Is Much Harder When Played in Reverse
Games are a bottomless reservoir of puzzle inspiration. This is because games and puzzles both tend to be founded on a concise set of logical rules. This week’s puzzle concerns one of the simplest strategy games ever devised: tic-tac-toe. Don’t feel too assured, though. You may be a tic-tac-toe expert, but have you… Read more…
