Do you think they gave Jesse (and Tracy) such terrible writing in the back half of the season because they were told to from the higher ups? Was this talked about for longer than we think? Either Jesse wanted out since last season and they were pissed and took it out on Upstead... or (more likely) they knew his contract was coming up for renewal and needed to cut costs (because network TV is dying)?

I honestly do not know. To be honest I think it was a combination of factors as to why 9B was generally lacking, and I don’t mean just lacking upstead.

I think Gwen Sigan is an genius and phenomenal writer. We have her to thank for so so so many Upstead moments. But, being a showrunner is not the same as being a writer. It is also hard as a woman in a male-dominated field. My personal feeling is she wanted to please too many people. She may have been told (or been cognizant of the fact) that Voight needed more of a big storyline. Enter Ana and Escano who no one cared about and trying to humanize Voight. It was just boring and not just to upstead fans. Kevin got a great ep or two and then his story felt unfinished. Tracy got her cool ep but it was like upstead was not even married. The burzek storyline was actually too complex like did Mak need to get kidnapped and traumatized again just as a catalyst more burzek drama?

The good news is all the actors did amazing with what they were given but it just felt discombobulated. Maybe it’s because she took over half way and did not have full control? Who knows. But I do suspect pleasing too many played into it.

I work somewhat close to the industry and my brother works in the industry and on set for shows like this. The advent of streaming shows and series has absolutely impacted the industry. Linear TV is also suffering and there is near double digit inflation in media in 2023 so advertisers are feeling it. I would think even the most successful network shows are feeling cost pressures and I can’t imagine that has not impacted contract negotiations across the board. It’s a giant shift in the industry.

Kicking your legs apart he leaned down over your back and bit the shell of your ear and growled . You let out another involuntary whimper

" Does my angel want to cum?" you nodded feeling yourself turning to jello beneath him.

" I can't fucking hear you slut."

"...yes sir" was all that you could choke out

" Not good enough. Lets teach you some manners first." He reached over to his phone and hit the speed dial for his secretary.

"yes sir?"

" Jamie, why don't you head out to lunch for a bit on me. Use the company card. We both deserve a break. I'm going to eat here with y/n."

" Thank you sir! I've been wanting to try that new sushi place!"

"Knock yourself out, you deserve it." He clicked the phone and listened until he heard her gather her things and go.

" Don't fucking move." He reached down and you heard him rustling with his clothes. Something dropped next to your face and your eyes shot open. His belt was displayed right next to your face. Leaning down again he spoke.

"Now princess you are going to count for daddy got it? You'll get five with my hand for sending me that photo, Five with my feather for not texting me back, and five with my belt for being a needy brat during my call and not listening. Do you understand?" You could feel yourself shaking.

" ..Ye..yes daddy."

A harsh slap echoed as her hit your ass with incredible force. 

"o....one" you cried another slap echoed through the office

"Tu...two" the next three came so quickly you could barely keep count. There was no way to anticipate his pattern. You could feel your ass stinging already.

"Three.......fo...four...FIVVEEEEE!!!!!"

He smirked pulling out a feather and hardening it into a makeshift switch and backing up to admire his handy work. Bright red hand prints covered your ass. He Pulled back and hit you with his feather causing your entire body to lurch forward onto the desk with force.

"FUCK! one." With a swish he landed another on your thigh

"TWO!!!" It was like he was hitting you harder with each go.  The last three caused more tears to obscure your vision. Dreading what was next you saw the blurred outline of the belt slide off of the desk.

" Last set angel, You okay? Remember the safety colors? Where are we at?" You felt a rush of relief as you heard the concern in his voice. Green meant good yellow slow down and crimson (your safe word) full stop. You and he both knew he'd never been this rough so he was checking in.

"st...still green daddy...g..green." You stuttered out.

" Good girl" he praised

"Okay, lets continue." He folded the belt in half an pulled back to take aim.

SNAAAAPPPPP!

The belt hit your ass ...hard.

"One" you felt so raw beneath him shaking and numb from the sting.

The rest of the hits echoed and caused you to melt into a puddle beneath him. Cunt practically drooling from pleasure and pain. He dropped the belt and positioned himself. Cock pulsating  as he grabbed your hips he spoke.

" Color angel?" Eager to come you answered instantly

"Green."

" If you want it fucking beg. Beg like the needy slut you are beg for me right fucking now"

His pace was brutal but it was like he was hitting every single nerve. A knot starting to form in your abdomen you started to whimper.

" No." he said simply as he continued his assault

Sending a feather to his mini fridge to get a bottle of water he unscrewed the top and handed it to you.

"Drink this angel." You felt the cool liquid slide down your throat steadying you and bringing you back down.

"How about I take the rest of the day off. I'll fly us home, run us a bubble bath and we can order some take out from your favorite place and watch a movie. How does that sound love?"

" That sounds perfect." You rasped out

"I'm so sorry my love. I hope you can forgive me."

"I should visit more often for apologies." You said with a smile. Nestling into his chest. Everything was perfect.

I don’t want to be a downer, but on the Burzek front, the premiere was a disappointment, imho. I loved all of Adam’s scenes and his interaction with Mak and Trudy was phenomenal, but the writing for Kim and Kim/Adam was uneven. She was almost dead and going on life support and then awake. I love that Kim is strong, but I sort of dread her plowing through it alone like after she miscarried and then thanking Adam for stepping in as Mak’s dad with hockey tickets. #frustratedwhump

You're absolutely not being a downer, the premiere was a disappointment. As a whole, I'm pretty happy with it, with how burzek were, but it is also very frustrating. Like on the romance front, I'll get to in a minute because there's only one thing I wish they'd do. But the whump part... Yeah, that's disappointing.

Obviously I knew it would be. Chicago pd is NOT good with dealing with injuries-- or rather the aftermath and recovery. The initial medical stuff-- so in this episode her being on the ventilator, it not looking good (in other episodes: Kim having compartment syndrome, Jay taking a while to wake up)-- they do well. But the problem is they need their characters in ship shape condition, especially with the unit so small (for example, with fire, they can afford to have one member on medical leave bc one) they can still hang around at the firehouse and two) it's a big cast) so the aftermath... It's disappointing. And even knowing this, it still makes it disappointing. Which is why I really want them to do the PTSD storyline well

Talking about which, I was about to make a post about this RIGHT as you sent this ask so great timing, whumpy!!!!

I have little faith in the writers when it comes to burzek. They just don't appreciate them or get them, and it's really frustrating, especially when they get so little screen time and when they do it's just crumbs and unspoken developments. Which is why, although I was talking about my optimistic predictions, everything that happened is what I thought it would.

The content we got though, although I'd have preferred more, was perfectly them. Like that wink? How he was with Mack? The ONLY reason I'm frustrated with what we got in this episode is because I have absolutely no faith in the writers. To me, this sets up them perfectly, that it's the perfect reunion.

Except. Then I remember the writers don't get them, and that's when I get frustrated. Because this isn't a whole jump ahead further into them, they're still only going to make it a tiny step. And that's what's frustrating, everything that happens, that should take them further only gets them a tiny bit ahead.

I was quite vocal that I wanted them back together within the first three episodes, just that agreement that they're together even though it's slow and they're working out the paces. But I was also vocal that I'd be fine if they didn't actually get back together-- just as they talk about wanting to/wanting to get to that stage. And that's the only thing I super wish they'd do right now.

How I read these scenes and how it'll set them up for the next season is: so that wink, all that,,, it just. It says, I'm here. I love you. We're in this together. The next episode will have a bit of conflict because Kim is struggling and Adam is trying to help. I'd *hope* that we'd get a hug at the end. Then this all builds into mid-season to them getting back together.

I WANT to believe the writers will be getting them together by mid season but yeah, no faith. Because how I see Burzek is, after Kim gets her PTSD diagnosis, Adam tells her he's here, and they have a discussion about how worried he was for her (maybe a line about him protecting her?) And that's when they have the discussion that they're not ready for it now, but they want to be kinda "exclusively single" and work towards getting back together.

Them just agreeing that they want no other person. Them agreeing that what's important right now is working on their own trauma and finding their groove with Makayla-- seeing first if they can co parent and be a family unit. I want this because what this show doesn't seem to get is you can have adult conversations. You can acknowledge this even if you're not together. That this is what can happen in real life, that you need to be a unit without actually being a couple in order to be the couple-- BUT that you need to vocalise this, get on the same page when it comes to the end goal. If the writers did this (and THEN got them together, if they have them have an adult conversation in 2-3 I'd even be fine with having to wait until the finale although I wouldn't want to) I'd be happy.

But they won't. They'll just continue to not express this which is what ultimately frustrates me.

And ugh, my thoughts are that if they DO have them have this conversation we'll have to wait mid season which is like.... Ugh, frustrating.

Optimistically I don't think they're gonna have Kim struggle alone but ugh. Even if they don't have a conversation I WANT Kim to seek him out, I WANT her to ask for his support and comfort, to know he is there when she needs him. Like especially with PTSD, you need that rock, that safe zone. And especially with Kim's PTSD being because she thinks Roy is out there, her safe zone can only be Adam. And I WANT the writers to do this, even if they keep them undefined.

Like I don't want her to struggle half a season alone internalising a lot and not having that lean on Adam. That's been done already and it's boring and unrealistic at this point. Like even if most of the comfort is just a tradition that at the end of each day, she seeks a hug from Adam. But I want her to have those moments at work where her PTSD creeps up and she just reaches for Adam's hand just for a squeeze, or steps closer to him. Just that kind of,,, he's her anchor. And I want her to appreciate him, to verbally express that.

Especially if she's getting therapy for her PTSD. Her therapist WOULD talk her through this.

And I really want Adam to be basically living with Kim. Especially with him being her anchor. That she can focus on being a mom because Adam is there to catch her when she falls, and is there to make Makayla feels safe and secure too.

AND he needs to be there for another reason: kids especially ones who's been through Trauma... Kim is Makayla's own anchor. And if it's just those two, she will pick up on the days Kim is more subdued and then she'll try and overcompensate to be Kim's support and that's not what a six year should feel like she should do. But with Adam there it'll shield her and also make her secure in knowing Kim-- the most important person in her life-- is looked after.

And to end this-- the one thing I think the premiere could've had was a hand squeeze from Kim. Like just a simple gesture of her just... Touching him. Obviously he was too far away from her for her to do that, but that's how it could've been better. Just to have that physical sign of Kim saying I'm here, I see you, thank you to him as well.

I finished reading Yoda: Dark Rendezvous, and I have to say, I really, really loved it! Everyone who recommended it to me was 100% right - this book is great, and especially great in its representation of the Jedi. I think I like it even more than Shatterpoint, and I really liked Shatterpoint.

There are some weak points - it was a little slow to pull me in, and there’s a couple of Weird Legends Things™ that, with me not being particularly immersed in that continuity, don’t quite fit in with my conception of Star Wars (Dooku apparently having had a Master that was not Yoda; the infamous 13-year-old age limit (though I was at least familiar with that one), the Jedi being so far in the public eye that there exists a famous Yoda impersonator, etc), and I was a little iffy on how it handled the “Jedi shouldn’t be in the war” angle (I’m fine with there being Jedi who think that the Jedi shouldn’t be in the war. I’m less fine with an author deciding that other Jedi can’t find the words to defend their involvement, because that’s a cheap way of framing the argument), and a small moment of the “everyone falls in love” stuff I dislike.

But those were very small aspects of the book, all things considered, and pretty much everything else about this book is really, really good, and very Star Warsy - a very healthy mix of the wacky as well as the philosophical sides of the franchise, which suited my tastes really well. This book is fun - Yoda is the grumpy grandpa that he deserves to be, and spends a good portion of the book disguised as an astromech that gets into all sorts of trouble. Obi-Wan and Anakin have peak sibling energy in the handful of scenes that they show up in - Anakin at one point insisting that a woman would have to be desperate to want Obi-Wan, and only a younger sibling could possibly say something like that with a straight face to a man as attractive as Obi-Wan, as well as Obi-Wan lying to Mace Windu’s face to cover for Anakin and then immediately grumbling about it to Anakin that he doesn’t know why he does these things for him is such an older sibling thing to do.

Where this book really shines, though, is the serious stuff - the philosophy and the dark side and especially grief. What absolutely sold me on this story, and what made me sit up and go “this is going to be one of my favorite Star Wars books”, was the part where Yoda speaks to the padawans and helps them address and work through their grief. It was phenomenal, and beautiful, and absolutely everything I want out of depicting the Jedi - especially in the context that only a chapter earlier, Ventress had been hurling those standard accusations of “the Jedi don’t let you feel”, and this book wonderfully, completely demolishes that nonsense. This section is absolutely amazing:

Yoda set his bowl of gumbo regretfully aside. “Hear it working, do you?”

“Hear what?” Whie snapped.

“The dark side. Always it speaks to us, from our pain. Our grief. It connects our pain to all pain, our hurt to all hurt.”

“Maybe it has a lot to say.” Whie stared at the starscape hovering over the projector table. “It’s so easy for you. What do you care? You are unattached, aren’t you? You’ll probably never die. What was Maks Leem to you? Another pupil. After all these centuries, who could blame you if you could hardly keep track of them? Well, she was more than that to me.” He looked up challengingly. Tear tracks were shining on his face, but his eyes were still hard and angry. “She was the closest thing I had to a mother, since you took me away from my real mother. She chose me to be her Padawan and I let her down, I let her die, and I’m not going to sit here and stuff myself and get over it!” He finished with a yell, sweeping the plate of crêpes off the projection table, so the platter went sailing toward the floor.

Yoda’s eyes, heavy-lidded and half closed like a drowsing dragon’s, gleamed, and one finger twitched. Food, platter, drinks, and all hung suspended in the air. The platter settled; the crêpes returned to it; Whie’s overturned cup righted itself, and rich purple liquid trickled back into it. All settled back onto the table.

Another twitch of Yoda’s fingers, the merest flicker, and Whie’s head jerked around as if on a string, until he found himself looking into the old Jedi’s eyes. They were green, green as swamp water. He had never quite realized before how terrifying those eyes could be. One could drown in them. One could be pulled under.

“Teach me about pain, think you can?” Yoda said softly. “Think the old Master cannot care, mmm? Forgotten who I am, have you? Old am I, yes. Mm. Loved more than you, have I, Padawan. Lost more. Hated more. Killed more.” The green eyes narrowed to gleaming slits under heavy lids. Dragon eyes, old and terrible. “Think wisdom comes at no cost? The dark side, yes - it is easier for them. The pain grows too great, and they eat the darkness to flee from it. Not Yoda. Yoda loves and suffers for it, loves and suffers.”

One could have heard a feather hit the floor.

“The price of Yoda’s wisdom, high it is, very high, and the cost goes on forever. But teach me about pain, will you?”

“I...” Whie’s mouth worked. “I am sorry, Master. I was angry. But...what if they’re right?” he cried out in anguish. “What if the galaxy is dark. What if it’s like Ventress says: we are born, we suffer, we die, and that is all. What if there is no plan, what if there is no ‘goodness’? What if we suffer blindly, trying to find a reason for the suffering, but we’re just fooling ourselves, looking for hope that isn’t there? What if there is nothing but stars and the black space between them and the galaxy does not care if we live or die?”

Yoda said, “It’s true.”

The Padawans looked at him in shock.

The Master’s short legs swung forth and back, forth and back. “Perhaps,” he added. He sighed. “Many days, feel certain of a greater hope, I do. Some days, not so.” He shrugged. “What difference does it make?”

“Ventress was right?” Whie said, shocked out of his anger.

“No! Wrong she is! As wrong as she can be!” Yoda snorted. “Grief in the galaxy, is there? Oh, yes. Oceans of it. Worlds. And darkness?” Yoda pointed to the starscape on the projection table. “There you see: darkness, darkness everywhere, and a few stars. A few points of light. If no plan there is, no fate, no destiny, no providence, no Force: then what is left?” He looked at each of them in turn. “Nothing but our choices, hmm?”

“Asajj eats the darkness, and the darkness eats her back. Do that if you wish, Whie. Do that if you wish.” The old Jedi looked deep into the starscape, suns and planets and nebulae dancing, tiny points of light blazing in the darkness. “To be Jedi is to face the truth, and choose. Give off light, or darkness, Padawan.” His matted eyebrows rose high over his swamp-colored eyes, and he poked Whie with the end of his stick. Poke, poke. “Be a candle, or the night, Padawan: but choose!”

Whie cried for what seemed like a long time. Scout ate. Fidelis served. Master Yoda told stories of Maks Leem and Jai Maruk: tales of their most exciting adventures, of course, but also comical anecdotes from the days when they were only children in the Temple. They drank together, many toasts.

Scout cried. Whie ate. Fidelis served.

Yoda told stories, and ate, and cried, and laughed: and the Padawans saw that life itself was a lightsaber in his hands; even in the face of treachery and death and hopes gone cold, he burned like a candle in the darkness. Like a star shining in the black eternity of space.

I want to show this passage to every hot-take Yoda-critical fan who’s ever leveled that kind of nonsense at him. I want every one of them to read this and still try to tell me that Yoda is detached and uncaring of the galaxy around him. I want every fan who thinks the Jedi are expected to be unfeeling to read this and understand what the Jedi actually say and do and why giving into these feelings is the issue, not the feelings themselves.

The confrontation with Dooku is also amazing. Yoda challenges him to explain why the dark side is so great, and Dooku only gets more and more frustrated as Yoda is unswayed by any of what he tempts him with. I especially love this bit where Yoda lays out exactly why what the dark side promises is false:

“Want something else. Want power.”

“Power have I.”

“Want wealth.”

“Wealth I need not.”

“Want to be safe,” Dooku said in frustration. “Want to be free from fear!”

“I will never be safe,” Yoda said. He turned away from Dooku, a shapeless bundle under a battered, acid-eaten cloak. “The universe is large and cold and very dark: that is the truth. What I love, taken from me will be, late or soon: and no power is there, dark or light, that can save me.”

That then leads into a bit where Dooku has a vision of what a dark!Yoda would look like, and realizes how utterly terrifying that would be.

Dooku also has abandonment issues on full display - lashing out at the lady who had given her son up to the Jedi, getting furious at her on the son’s behalf (but so clearly, his own, speaking of his own resentment towards his parents), and throwing an absolute hissy fit because he’s convinced Yoda likes Anakin more than him. I’m not kidding, he’s so offended by Anakin’s entire existence that just his mere presence in his house is enough for Dooku to stop feeling conflicted about the whole thing and jump right back into the dark side.

And there’s just so many good little moments throughout it all on top of all that. Whie’s dreams - and oh, I knew exactly what his dream of his own death was when he described it to Scout and it hurt at the end when he hugged Anakin while saying “I’m so glad you’re not coming to kill me!”. And Ventress, calling Dooku out on the fact that it’s so obvious that Sidious will end up replacing him (also for a more humorous bit - the fact that she apparently has some petty grudge against Anakin and Obi-Wan for stealing her ships so she goes out of her way to steal their ship at the end), and the droids, and Scout’s cleverness in winning the tournament despite her disadvantages, Jai Maruk’s last stand and refusal to fall when he was at the edge, and...so much, really.

And above all else, the book really latches onto the idea of Jedi as family, and you all know how much I really, really love the idea of the Jedi as a big found family. The idea that they consider each other to be family is driven home again and again, in their words and in their actions, and I absolutely adore this book for that emphasis.

John Carpenter Presents Storm Kids: Hyperbreed #1 Storm King Comics 2020 Created & Written by Louise Simonson Created & Pencilled by Guy Dorian, Sr. Inked by Sal Buscema Coloured by Ross Campbell Lettered by Janice Chiang    Byrr, Fext and Cammo:  Hyperbreed human-animal 'splices' who've been given a cushy assignment, board an ancient freighter, transport valuable Explosive Ore to a mining colony, and earn a large delivery bonus. But when they drop out of spacefold, Mak pirates--robot monsters wearing the body parts of vanquished enemies--attack. Fighting against cruel odds, with Mak Yik crystals infesting their ship, our heroes begin to suspect that their lucky break is really a setup for annihilation.    Alright and now for something completely different.  Actually it really isn’t so much different now that I think about it, it has this crazy revamped Wanderer’s to it.  Otherwise I like what we are seeing here and the concept behind the three characters.  Genetic splicing isn’t a new idea and we’ve seen it done well and done horribly, here what I see is something that intrigues me and makes me want to know so much more.  I am not surprised by how polished this book is, these are highly respected creators whose resumes are quite impressive but I am surprised that we haven’t seen them do this sooner.      I am really enjoying the way that this is being told.  The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is extremely nice to experience.  That this is an inter-galactic setting and that the ancient and honourable game of Poker is discussed starts this book beautifully.  Louise does something with the writing here that not only sets us up for the series itself but as that is happening we get this great look at the character development.  The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing the twists and turns along the way we see how everything works together to create the books ebb & flow.    I like how we see the way that this book is structured with the multiple layers and for adults reading between the lines while kids can read it and start to see how being different isn’t always so bad.  It has elements for everyone to enjoy and those that are aimed at one group over the other.  Also it really is a good strong book that can be in any household to be passed around and end up being a great topic of conversation around a device free meal.    I am enamoured with the interiors here.  The linework we see and how the varying weights and techniques being utilised to bring the attention to life is astonishing to see.  Also that Sal gets to ink them and bring this to life even further is why he’s among the best there is.  I love the attention to detail that we see and how it brings me back to a classic age in comics and not only that but manage to elevate the work well past today’s standards.  This is proof positive that the younger generation still have a thing or two to learn from the masters.  How we see backgrounds being utilised here is phenomenal to see and how they work within the composition within the panels so that we get this depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the book is stellar.  The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels shows a sensational eye for storytelling.  The colour work is truly and utterly mindbogglingly great!  Specially when it comes to Cam as the colouring on his skin is seen and how the various hues and tones within the colours are utilised it is just freaking amazing.  This is a masterclass in colouring and I'll be damned if this isn’t as spectacular as it gets. ​    This book is absolutely incredible and it doesn’t matter what age you are there is so much here to enjoy and to share with others.  This maintains the high quality standards that I have come to expect from Storm King Comics.  No matter what they do, what genre, what age range they put out the highest quality books and one look at this will show you just that!

Any motivation or advice for one man team developers? Sorry if this has been asked already

Hey! I’ve been working on a solo fangame project for too long almost 3 years, while working on The BOSS & Glitch In The System. I have no clue if this’ll help or if this is the type of advice you wanted, but here you go. The things written here can apply to non-fangame projects, too! 

(Warning: lots of text ahead - and take this with a grain of salt; I’m not an expert.)

General: 

You are going to have to plan in advance and organize absolutely every single thing about your project. Don’t just make an outline for your story. Create concept art for your characters, figure out what makes your game story unique, figure out the mapping and game mechanics early.

Make sure you know your options. If you’re really good at one thing (writing,art,music,code) and everything else is a bit new to you, there are free and paid resources out there. Don’t feel bad for using them. 

If you’re a perfectionist, make sure the tools you use are quick. Do not spend a week on one room design, or a month on one song. You will never finish your game, even if it’s super short. 

Kinda joykill advice, but I don’t recommend making your dream project first unless you fully KNOW how to start making your project on your own (which even then, you’ll need to organize everything for it to work). Make something silly, or try joining game jams. 

External feedback is even more important when working on your game. Get playtesters or people willing to help give feedback to you early on, or midway through development. 

Figure out how much energy you can devote to your project. If you want to be ambitious, that’s great! But overworking yourself is a horrible idea. 

If you want to change something fairly major about your game, you should probably only do it if you’re below the 30-40% mark. Otherwise you’ll forever drive yourself insane by changing anything when you’ve made that much progress on your project. You can always improve on certain aspects for future games. 

Especially for fangames: don’t take everything you make seriously. 

Games can still be considered solo projects, even if the developers got help for stuff like art, music, and code. You don’t have to do every single thing by yourself. But if you’re stubborn like me about this and still want to do everything, that’s cool too.

Back up your game or forever suffer in developer hell. Yes, I’m serious. I’ve seen projects get cancelled because they couldn’t afford to get a backup drive (or even a USB key) and it’s miserable.

Don’t act like you’re above other game developers. This applies for anyone, really. Support the other people around you, too! 

Visuals:

If you have absolutely no passion or desire to do your own art assets, premade resources are your friends. However, you need to really focus on your other game aspects in other for your games to stand out. To The Moon used a lot of pre-made RPG Maker XP resources but had a phenomenal soundtrack and used that + its visuals to make the game feel more cinematic than most RPG Maker games.

If you feel like you suck at art or don’t have money for expensive drawing tools, but want to make all of the game assets, then do it! Even with simple/free-to-use tools, your can make game art that’ll be unique and memorable. example / example / example 

Keep backups of every single one of your original art asset files.

If you want to do pixel art for your game, 1: Always avoid coloring with pure black. Your game will look disgusting. 2: Programs like Asesprite are useful for animations. 3: Make sure it’s proper pixel art. Using AA brushes, the blur tool (etc) will completely ruin that.

Video cutscenes aren’t 100% necessary. Certain game devs make it a goal to never include cutscenes to create a certain atmosphere, or for the game to feel more interactive for the player. (ex: Night In The Woods)

Pretend the player can’t listen to game audio while playing. Keep the visuals interesting and make your game feel alive! Whether it’s through tiny animations, window animations, etc. 

For 3D Games: motion blur =/= super cool polished game. >:(

It depends on your game’s style, of course, but usually it’s not a good sign if you can tell your project is made by someone with default assets and doesn’t try to work beyond that (for any engine, 2D or 3D). 

If you want to do regular art for your game: make sure you know what resolution your game is going to be at its absolute highest, and always work with bigger than that. 

Keep your visuals consistent! If an early area looks unpolished/different from the final maps, then fix it. 

I’m going to skip music advice because I 100% suck at composing and don’t know what I’m doing yet. Just make sure your audio files are lossless, even if it adds a bit to your game’s file size. 

Audio: 

Use the same logic like in one of the points for visuals: Pretend like the player can’t see any of your cool visuals or fancy animations, and is just left with blocks for character sprites and very shapes for maps. Make your game convey emotion through audio, even if it’s through tiny sounds, or really quiet environment sounds. 

Voice acting: Don’t even bother if you can’t find people who have good microphones or can’t afford/know how to properly remove background noise. You’ll just be left with really bad quality audio that won’t help immerse the player at all. 

There can be a theme to your audio, much like there can be a theme to your visuals. Whether or not you decide to contrast the visuals with your audio or pair them up is up to you. It can give the game a whole new tone, depending on how you approach sound design.

Audio cues are good for puzzles, but again, don’t just rely on that only to indicate to the player that an objective has been completed. If they have the game on mute, they’re just going to be left wandering around.

Binaural audio can be cool, if you want to try doing that. 

Writing: 

Don’t write game dialogue at 4 am. It never works. 

Game writing is VERY different from what you might be used to. Keep in mind that for the most part players want to interact with an environment, not just only hear what characters have to say about a certain event or area. Forcing them to go through giant dialogue cutscenes every time is not a smart move to make. (Obviously, visual novels and text adventure games are an exception to this)

Not that you only need to have 4 words in your entire game! But there is a chance someone will download your game and just not enjoy the writing. Think ahead of time if you really feel like every game puzzle, every important cutscene needs to happen after giant walls of text.

If you have the ability to make visuals that can be paired with writing, you don’t really have an excuse for avoiding that. Especially if the cutscene 

Proofread every single thing, or get someone else to do it. If you can export all your game dialogue into text files, that could be helpful. 

If you’re trying to write a serious game (with lighthearted moments or not), chances are that adding that one dumb inside joke with your friends in-game could ruin the immersion for the player.

Only time I think the developer should focus more on their own opinion than the players: create as much atmosphere as you can. Figure out the things YOU like about a game world, and focus on that as much as you can. Don’t worry about making it appeal to all/certain audiences. 

Don’t act like every single player in the world will like all of your characters. Even if they’re nice, someone could absolutely despise your main characters, or find themselves liking the antagonist more.

Dumb character ticks and speech mannerisms can still work.

Not everything about a Serious Game™ has to be gritty and all that. Me and Katie wouldn’t recommend making a completely serious fangame anyway, but that’s another topic. 

You’re probably not going to ever write a game that has absolutely no tropes in it whatsoever, so give up on that. 

You can make a character dislikeable but still charming. The other way around works too. Not everything has to be clear-cut right and wrong.

Game design / Programming: 

If you ever use shortened names for certain switches, variables, etc - or have a complex system for one game feature, write down what all of it does somewhere. You don’t want to screw yourself over months after you implemented something because you forgot what one button does, or what another variable is for. 

Bite the bullet. If there’s an area you restrict access to for the player purely for the sake of not having to deal with coding it, that’s no fun.

You can never make a game with endless options/possibilities.

If there’s something buggy in your absolute basic gameplay mechanics (movement, UI) just change it and don’t focus on anything else before it’s fixed. There’s no excuse not to.

Make sure your game UI is bearable to look at. Please.

You don’t have to add 50 game options or features for your game to stand out. Unless you know it’ll encourage the player to keep playing or will help the player enjoy the game, then there’s no real use for it.

If you can ever optimize your game (frame rate, controls, etc) do that too. Having a simple 2D game running at 15fps one second and 60 the other won’t make your players happy. 

Personally, I’d rather play a working puzzle even if it’s a bit boring, over something that’s super creative but buggy as hell. 

Color puzzles aren’t going to work for colorblind players, and if you have an aesthetic (super tiny) game font, people with bad eyesight won’t be able to play. Give people options! 

“Choices in this game matter” if you know they don’t matter whatsoever for the ending or for a majority of the game, then don’t say that. This also ties into the branding section.

Making band-aid fixes for every single one of your game bugs is a really bad idea. If you can take some time to fix one bug fully rather than relying on workarounds, do that. 

Back. Up. Your. Code. Files. Especially if you’re planning on making major changes to it. It can be very useful to have old pieces of code to fall back on if your changes don’t work as planned. 

Figure out what you can and can’t do with an engine. There’s a section in The Beginner’s Guide that talks about the limitations certain engines can pose to developers, and how certain engines are just better fit for certain tasks than others. You won’t be able to include or make everything for one project. (Chances are, that wouldn’t work well anyways). 

Don’t expect the player to only behave one way to your game’s design, puzzles, or mapping. Again, give people options. There can be some fun in giving the player different results for different puzzle solutions. 

Presentation: 

You don’t have to reveal every single thing about your project online-  but on the other hand, keeping everything to only vague/abstract teaser posts isn’t very helpful to people, either. 

Social media is your friend. Twitter, tumblr, youtube, etc- Find different audiences through your games there! 

Figure out what sites you want to put your game on. There are tons of options: Itch.io is my favorite. But sites like Gamejolt, indiedb, rmn.net, Steam (more for commercial games), etc can work for you. You can always just upload it for yourself online (mediafire, google drive, dropbox) too, if you dislike all of those sites or prefer doing it through direct download links. 

Don’t self promote your game on other people’s games or accounts…

Even if someone is hoping to see something really specific in your game, your project will get out of hand if you just add in what every single person wants. Convince people that your game will be worthwhile even if a feature or a character doesn’t appear in it. 

Remaining transparent with your audience will help you a lot.

Keep things easy to access and read/look at for potential players. Make sure people can find something about the game quick. Things like FAQs, “About this game”, external links, etc are very helpful.

One last thing: Focus on making something that you ultimately like. It’ll be much easier to handle any sort of obstacles during/after development that way.

Overall thoughts on the night VICTORIA & VAL - I’m just going to ignore how much of an ass Val was in the package and focus on Victoria. What a beautiful dance! Very bittersweet concept for a performance that totally worked for Halloween Night. This was her best dance so far, in my opinion. JORDAN & LINDSAY - okay, I know it’s often thrown around on this show that sometimes you can’t tell the difference between the star and the pro or that the star looks like a pro, but that has never been as true as with Jordan Fisher. He absolutely nailed that Paso Doble and it will be a very memorable dance. Oh, and HOT DAMN, LINDSAY. NIKKI & ARTEM - gahhh I was so excited about this dance! I LOVE Hocus Pocus and this version of the song. I am both critical of this dance because of my love for the movie, but I’m very lenient for the same reason. I wish they had tried to recreate the costume party from the movie and I kind of wish they had given this song to Jordan & Lindsay or some other couple because they were in the age range that loves Hocus Pocus. However, it’s evident that Nikki struggled with the dance quite a bit. It kinda seemed like she couldn’t move fast enough, but she got through it well, in my opinion. VANESSA & MAKS - I really liked the concept, but I think it overshadowed the Paso Doble content. It was entertaining, yes, but there just wasn’t much there. TERRELL & CHERYL - not a bad dance, just forgettable. There was probably 10 seconds when Terrell stood there, doing nothing while Cheryl danced. It was just a little meh. LINDSEY & MARK - waaahhhhhh Mark’s choreography when it comes to Paso Dobles is just phenomenal. Everything about this dance was on point - the song, everything. FRANKIE & WITNEY - I really like this partnership; they compliment each other really well. I’m not the biggest fan of Contemporary dances, but this one was very good. It was creepy and had a creepy song, so it worked. Was it 30 worthy? Meh. DREW & EMMA - okay, I love how they had Sasha being the one to marry Drew and Emma lmao but the dance was fun and kooky and represented Halloween very well. TEAM MONSTER MASH - there’s no way that this could hold a candle to the song from The Phantom of the Opera, lets be honest. However, I liked the enthusiasm of this team and they made it work. Was it a little cluttered, yes, but it was very entertaining. I LOVED Artem and Mark’s outfits. TEAM PHANTOM OF THE BALLROOM - there’s no way that Team Monster Mash could hold a candle to the song from The Phantom of the Opera, LETS BE HONEST. 

Congrats DWTS, you’ve redeemed yourself and knocked yourself back down all in a matter of 2 hours with that shitty double elimination that no one knew about. Can we all agree that Vanessa and Nikki should be there if Drew and Terrell are there?

My Trashy Pro Opinions

Some anon’s asked for this and I am prepared to be dragged to hell and back for it. Remember these are only from Season 19 on. Also, didn’t count Anna, Edyta or Louis. Cause I don’t really care about them. 

Keo- I love Keo as a DANCER. I am not a huge fan of him as a TEACHER. I think he handles the crazy better each season though and has learned to just roll with the punches at this point so that is a point for him. He is sexy as hell though, and so funny and sweet.

Sharna- OBVIOUSLY my favorite. I love her. She can be extra sometimes but I think that is what makes me love her. Her partnerships are some of my absolute favorites. She is that person that your eyes are drawn to at any given point. She doesn’t take a lot of shit, she speaks her mind. She is obviously my favorite at everything.  She is a fantastic choreographer. She knows her strengths and weaknesses in teaching. She can teach, through her incredible partnerships, a double amputee. She can highlight her partners strengths, teach her partners the movement in the right ways to highlight their strengths. Her dancing is show stopping. My eyes are drawn to her every time she dances. The partnerships are part of the teaching.

Karina- I have never cared much for her just because she was gone early both seasons I have watched her on. I don’t really have many thoughts about her TBH

Tony- I love Tony. Tony is a doll and so funny. When I watched him he had the older females compared to the older seasons when he had potential. So i liked seeing him just kinda doing what he does without too much pressure because he knew the likelihood of him winning was slim to none. I loved his dances with Marla the most. 

Alison- Okay I have a love hate relationship with Allison. I loved loved loved her and Riker. I loved their dances and their partnership. But her other 3 were just meh for me. Her choreography was just never appropriate for beginners, in my opinion. She tried to do too much for them. It worked for Riker because he was trained. But someone like Andy Grammer and Babyface, they aren’t trained. And she just gave them more than they can handle. She’s an amazing Contemp dancer, just not my favorite ballroom.

Cheryl- The OG. I love Cheryl. She is no shits taken, hard ass TEACHER. She is funny and sweet and I love her. I thought her and Ryan were adorable and she was SO GOOD for him. She really tries to push her celeb and she is good. Her dancing is gorgeous too. 

Emma- Sweet sweet Emma. I love that girl! I love that now that she has won, she is not putting pressure on her celeb. She is still just enjoying her time on the show. She really showed her patience and versatility with her oldies then when she got someone like Rashad she still just enjoyed it and put her best foot forward. She is a joy to watch. I have never seen her get angry or have a fight. I just adore her.

Artem- my velvet! I love me some Artem of course. I fell in love with him during his switch up with Janel in Season 19. That had nothing to do with his choreography and everything to do with holy mother of god he is gorgeous. I loved him and Lea. She was absolutely amazing and his dances with her really were good. And Ms. Patti oh man she was incredible and he seemed overjoyed to be with her. He had a little rough patch and then him and Nancy were great. I just love his quiet bad boy nature I think. Love him. My man.

Peta- okay. This is where the dragging starts. Peta is GORGEOUS and an incredible dancer and super funny. I just never find myself rooting for her partners. I did love Tommy and Nyle, but I wanted Paige to win. I loved her more. I have always just been middle of the road in relation to her. 

Derek- Derek is an amazing choreographer and an amazing teacher, but really just a conceited prick of a man. He did good with Bethany, I liked that partnership overall (probably because I liked Sadie and Bethany’s friendship more). Liked him and Bindi, just thought he focused more on her dad’s passing and getting that sympathy shit than I appreciated. Then he pissed me off with the Nastia thing. Wasn’t going to come back because he had too many other things going on but OH Nastia is doing it so he came back, they had atrocious shitty schedules that I think  played a part in her downfall. It just pissed me off. bleh. 

Val- oh man. val val val. I think Val is the hottest of hot, right behind artem in my opinion. I think he is cocky as shit (though I think this season he is a whole different person). I don’t like some of his styles. I don’t like when he talks back to the judges. He was coasting by for a couple years there, but he seems to be refreshed and I will say his partnerships are tied with Sharna’s for my faves. He is an incredible partner I will give him that. 

Mark- My personal favorite choreographer. His creativity and his style and his swag I just adore. Minus ALexa (even though she had one of my favorite mark dances), I love his partnerships. I think he is a great teacher, I have always liked what he creates and I have always like his goofy and quirky nature. He is incredible.

Witney- Okay, the reason I am even making this is because anons assumed she was my least favorite. Which is not at all the case. My problem with Wit is she got Alfonso and kicked ass. Even with outside help, she kicked ass. Then she didn’t get so lucky on her partners. And she just checked out. She lost the fire to create and like she just didn’t really give two shits anymore. Her only partner with some oomph was Carlos and he got his best score and had his best dance when LINDS taught him during switch up week. It is very nice to see her get the sparkle back though I will say that.

Kym- Love her. She is a doll. Her and Robert are just the freaking dream. But otherwise? No real thoughts about her

Sasha- Sasha as a pro, sasha as a pro. Okay I loved Sasha and Kim, Sasha and Terra. when he put no pressure on himself, he was a great pro. I think with simone, while I love their friendship, he got caught up in the ringer aspect and kinda lost it there. I like his dancing overall, would love it if he would just stop flipping all the time. He is like a hyper little squirrel I want to feed some ritalin to. He just needs to come down about 4 notches in everything he does. But God he is funny and his pranks are the best.

Jenna- Jenna as a pro, Jenna as a pro. I don’t think it’s fair to really comment on it much but I am going to anyway. She needed to learn how to be a pro to untrained celebs more. She gave him harder choreography than he could handle, she was very consoling after their shitty scores on week one so that is good. I think she just got caught up in the idea of being a pro more than understanding how to actual train beginners. 

Maks- *prepares to be dragged* I.HATE.MAKS. okay there is is. I cannot stand him. I don’t like him. He is preachy, cocky, talks over people, has to be the center of things. I just can’t with him. Granted yes he is a little calmer since the cutest baby was born. BUt still. Can’t. can’t handle him. But he has a KILLER ass so there is that. 

Gleb- I like him this season. Haven’t before but really like him this season so far. Every single dance had to be sex and I am glad he is not doing that this season. I didn’t like him and Jana at all, overrated as hell and she annoyed me. Erika’s dances were a bit too much for the 8 PM hour, though her VW was pretty. I am just glad to see him do things a little differently

Alan- MY BABY ALAN! He did so good on his first time out as a pro. He was caring, attentive, only gave Debbie what she could handle. I thought he was amazing and I love him to pieces and yeah LOL

Lindsey- my second favorite. I adore her. She is an amazing choreographer and partner, she has some of the greatest little partnerships. I think she is just phenomenal. She is caring and attentive and honest. I just love her. I have always rooted for her too.

‘He was a center of gravity’: Architect Francois Perrin dies at 50

On a breezy April evening in 2013, hundreds of partygoers were shuttled up Benedict Canyon to the Sheats-Goldstein Residence. The iconic Los Angeles home designed by John Lautner was familiar to every guest, but on that night, it would appear utterly transformed.

Tucked into the house’s concrete corners were a half-dozen site-specific pieces by French artist Xavier Veilhan, one of which was a surprise musical performance with Nicolas Godin, of the French electronic band Air. Guests sipped cocktails on a deck laced with nylon cording that knit the triangular roofline to the legendary pool. In the cantilevered window of the master bedroom, a facet-cut emerald sculpture of Lautner gazed out at the city below.

It was another ambitious installation from Francois Perrin, the type that LA’s design community had come to expect from the architect and curator who defied boundaries in his field and connected artists and designers across a wide orbit.

Perrin, who was also an avid surfer, died Monday at a beachside location in Ventura County, just weeks after he was diagnosed with a rare spinal cord cancer, his partner, the writer Eviana Hartman, confirms. He was 50.

Born in Paris, Perrin studied architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts, where his father was a professor of sculpture. He moved to the Los Angeles area nearly two decades ago, yet continued to work in his native France and moved fluidly between the two countries.

Last year, Perrin was awarded the French Ministry’s Order of Arts and Letters at the Residence of France in LA, a testament to his connections which spanned across the city but also transcended geographic barriers, creating an ongoing cultural exchange with his multidisciplinary network of collaborators and colleagues.

“He brought a truly unique voice to a city that thought it had everything covered,” architect Tom Marble tells Curbed. “No one else made buildings like he did, which, to a one, were conceptually compelling on one level, oddly disturbing on another, yet absolutely original to the core.”

Perrin’s concept-driven architecture made a splash, like the Skatehouse he designed for the owner of a skateboard shoe company in 2011. Although the home, which was supposed to be built in Malibu, was never realized, a full-scale model where every surface is skateable was produced, including curved ramp-like walls and a built-in headboard above the bed for grinding.

But his architecture went beyond performative gestures. At first glance, Perrin’s 2012 Earthouse is yet another glass-box estate stacked into a steep hillside just below the Hollywood Sign. But the project, a collaboration with green builder Yves Lefay, is filled with clever sustainability innovations like a rainwater catchment system and a natural ventilation system that eliminates the need for air conditioning.

Perrin brought the same environmental sensitivity to a more recent installation for the 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial, Air Houses: Design for a New Climate. Meant to address the disconnect between architects and the ecological needs of their building sites, angular structures made from silver fabric were suspended inside the Palm House of the Garfield Park Conservatory, a climate adaptation program for some unseen futuristic society.

“As an architect he had this love for the ephemeral and the phenomenal,” says architect Barbara Bestor. “These floating pieces in a hothouse full of plants, even the skateboarding, these are gravity-defying acts of architectural imagination where the material palette was fire, air, and leaves.”

Perrin’s piece for the 2017 Chicago Biennial proposes “new directions for building in relationship to landscape and climate.”

Perrin’s love for ephemerality also informed his work as a curator. He coordinated dozens of group shows and installations, including a groundbreaking 2004 exhibition for the MAK Center for Art and Architecture in West Hollywood on French conceptualist Yves Klein.

“He has been a tireless activator and advocate for not only the MAK Center but also the Los Angeles art and architecture community at large,” MAK Center director Priscilla Fraser tells Curbed. “Seeing Francois at not only the MAK Center programming but at any cultural event always meant an engaging discussion filled with enthusiasm for any topic from sustainable energy to skateboarding.”

In 2013, Perrin served as curator and architect for Architectones, a collaboration with Veilhan for the French gallery Perrotin, which orchestrated ambitious installations in some of the world’s most famous modernist structures, including Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavilion and Le Corbusier’s Unité d’ Habitation in France, and the transformative installation at Lautner’s Sheats-Goldstein Residence.

At the time of his death, another of Perrin’s projects had just embarked upon a multi-city tour, The Environment-Bubble. An inflatable residence first envisioned by French-Canadian architect Francois Dallegret for British architecture critic Reyner Banham’s 1965 book A Home Is Not a House, Perrin turned the concept into part urban folly, part performance space, encasing participants inside a translucent plastic dome like a nomadic snowglobe.

After installations at sites in New York City and in Orleans, France, The Environment-Bubble was meant to be installed at the MAK Center as part of its current Shelter or Playground exhibition in February. The installation was ultimately not realized due to Perrin’s health, says Fraser.

A memorial for collaborators and colleagues is planned for Sunday, April 7 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the MAK Center (guests are asked to wear navy, as Perrin always did), and a fundraising campaign has been set up to support Perrin’s family, including his 16-month-old daughter. Additionally, a surfer’s circle will be held on Saturday, April 6 at 8 a.m. at Topanga Beach—representing a whole other community Perrin was immersed in that his architect colleagues hardly knew.

Perrin was known for experimental works like the 2007 Airhouse, which wrapped polycarbonate skin around wooden framing, creating pockets of air as insulation.

“He managed to create this really remarkable web of people and ideas and projects,” says LA architect Frank Escher. “It drew not just on his encyclopedic knowledge of recent architecture and art history, it also drew on on his ability to connect with people. That’s the thing that made him so interesting, the ease with which he built bridges and drew connections and made introductions. He was a center of gravity.”
