I was going through my notes the other day and came across a phrase that I hadn’t paid much attention to at first, but now, after rereading it, I find it so representative of Toni and Port’s relationship, in particular of Port’s (conflicting) feelings for him. 

When you look at all the other personifications, Toni and Port’s romance isn’t extraordinary by any means. Their distance is an objective reality that is shared with everyone else. To love as a nation means to love from afar. 

And while I do believe that distance makes the heart grow fonder, there’s something to be said about loving someone who becomes almost synonymous with home while you’re on your self-imposed exile in the name of spice trade.

An “exile’s idealization of home” is exactly how I see Port think about Toni, especially during the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. 

Everything that comes with that idealization - “the nostalgia for past pleasures, the sense of time passing to little purpose (because you’re anywhere but home), the longing” - is pure, undiluted SpaPort. 

As for the last part, I feel like comparing a nation loving another nation to having a death wish is already an established truth in the fandom. Port sees his fear of death in Toni, because loving him means putting his own survival on the line. There are many examples of personifications sacrificing themselves to “make way” for their loved ones. 

And yet, Port can’t help but love and long for Toni like an exiled person loves and longs for home.

Antoinette “Toni” Elizabeth Stark born on Friday, May 29, 1970. Her parents were two S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, Amanda Armstrong and Jude. Her father was actually a secret Hydra double-agent who had very little regard for anybody but himself and  ended up regularly selling out fellow S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives. He was almost responsible for Toni’s mother, Amanda, almost dying as well at the hands of an assassin. However, Jude ended up falling in love with Amanda before her planned death and decided to ultimately save her. After this incident they got to know each other and began a relationship, then two years later, Amanda ended up pregnant with Toni. However, a week before giving birth, Jude decided to reveal the truth to Amanda and where his true allegiance had been the entirety of their relationship and even before that. During this heated discussion after getting the truth…Amanda ended up killing Jude.  

Traumatized by what happened Amanda ended up asking S.H.I.E.L.D. to ensure that her baby girl would find a safe and happy home after she gave birth. However, after giving birth the director ended up following the same procedure used for unwanted pregnancies in the agency and Toni was left in an orphanage in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Working with S.H.I.E.L.D., the famous industrialist Howard Stark learned about what happened and decided to find the baby and adopted her for his wife Maria.

They never told Toni the truth. 

Growing up, Toni constantly craved her fathers attention, she was always striving to make him proud. But, Howard had always dismissed her without another thought, it was like she was only there to serve for one purpose…to be only seen as his daughter in the public's eyes. 

Her father was stiff with her, and was a cold and unloving father that Toni only feared and hated her entire life.

However, when it came to her mother Maria, Toni adored and loved her. Her mother was a beautiful, kind, loving woman, who Toni could never understand how or why she ended up being with Howard out of everyone.  Maria was always so gentle, nurturing and loved Toni unconditionally. She was the one who taught Toni how to play the piano and they played together, especially after a rough night with her father Howard, whose violent mood swings continued to get worse and worse from his ever increasing drinking habits. Maria tried her best to protect Toni from those…but as Toni grew older she refused to stay quiet and keep her head down no longer. 

In December 1991, when Toni was twenty-one years old, Howard and Maria prepared to go away to the Bahamas for a few days over the Christmas holiday without her. Toni had recently caused a scandal and embarrassment to Howard and the Stark company after being caught in scandalous photos, drinking and partying. 

Howard ordered her to stay in their house, away from trouble and learn her lines for the apology she would have to say in front of the cameras when they got back. 

She wasn’t allowed to argue, because Howard demanded respect and authority from her, and as long as Toni was in his home, using his money she would have to continue doing as he said. 

The family butler, Edwin Jarvis, was to keep watch of Toni, making sure she was doing as she was told and she was fine with that. Since Toni was extremely close to Jarcis, he was always more of a father to her than Howard ever was. 

A few days later, Toni ended up finding out that her parents were now dead, they had both died in a car crash…leaving Toni to struggle in her grief and regret. Not so much for Howard, though she always wished she had been good enough for him, but most of all for her mother Maria.

The night she left, Toni had gotten in a fight with her also, because she despised her mother being with Howard, calling her weak and a sorry excuse of a mother. 

That was the last thing Toni ever said to her mother and she could never apologize for it. 

For the next few months, to help Toni deal with her grief and process, Obadiah Stane took over as interim CEO of Stark Industries. However months later, still at the young age of twenty-one, Toni inherited Stark Industries and took over from Obadiah Stane, becoming the youngest CEO of a Fortune 500 company in history. Despite Howard never really caring or giving her a chance to prove herself, Toni was a genius, especially when it came to building weapons and robots.

Toni decided to distract herself from the grief, by focusing on building a name for herself, for the company. SO no one would look down at her ever again. 

Just a few years later, Toni suffered another devastating loss when her family butler, and father figure, Jarvis, ended up passing away. 

This only furthered Toni’s grief and during the process, Toni ended up building herself a custom mansion that included an A.I. system that helped out in the house. She named the system “Just a Rather Very Intelligent System,” shortened J.A.R.V.I.S., in tribute to Edwin Jarvis, whom Stark had often credited for helping to raise her. 

As the years went on, Toni was becoming even more successful, constantly helping the company grow and earning billions of dollars. 

Her success seemed to shine more than Howard’s ever did. 

However, despite the successful appearance on the outside, at least when it came to the business arrangements and creations…Toni had multiple scandals. 

There were constant tabloids talking about her heavy drinking, partying lifestyle and constant one-night stands with both men and women. 

Toni was constantly sought after for her money, fame and business so Toni learned to never trust anybody.

Except for three people. Her bodyguard Happy Hogan, her personal assistant, Pepper Potts and her longtime friend James Rhodes. 

In 2009, Toni went on a trip in Afghanistan to present to the military Stark Industries’ newest weapon, the Jericho missile. It should have been like any other day in Toni’s busy life.

However, after a successful presentation, the convoy that was with Toni, to return her to the United States Armed Forces base, were suddenly attacked by insurgents who ended up blowing  up the vehicle in front, trapping them. 

Toni could only watch in pure utter horror as the soldiers stepped out to protect her from the attack, only to be gunned down right in front of her own eyes. Her ears ringing from the many explosions and gunfire.

As all the soldiers were dying all around her, Toni rushed out of the vehicle, to find cover and try to contact some help.

While Toni was using her phone, one of her very own Stark Industries missiles landed right next to her. Toni stared at the missile, instantly frozen in fear before she attempted, desperately, to try and get away; however Toni was too slow and the bomb exploded right beside her. 

The resulting blast caused Toni to be thrown backward and lose consciousness. The explosion embedded several pieces of shrapnel into her chest, several fragments dangerously close to her heart…

Toni had failed in and out of consciousness, feeling incredible pain each time since an operation was being performed on her chest in an attempt to remove the pieces of shrapnel and save her life.

Eventually, Toni feebly found herself dazed, still in pain, in front of a camera as some various terrorists of the Ten Rings, the ones who kidnapped her, were now reading out a ransom note to an unknown viewer while Toni could only look on in dismay with various guns aimed directly at her. The shock of trying to process this all made Toni lose consciousness again.

When Toni woke up sometime later, she woke up to find an electromagnet attached to her chest…which was hooked up to a car battery. Then in her panic, a man tried to calm her down and explain everything to her. This man was named Ho Yinsen, the one who ended up saving her life with the operation. 

Yinsen explained that the electromagnet was keeping the shrapnel from entering her heart and killing her. Yinsen went on to explain how they had once met in Bern during the 1999 although Toni had been too drunk to remember. However, just as Toni started to question where they were, someone banged on the door from the other side.

As Yinsen quickly helped Toni get onto her feet, they were greeted by a man named Abu Bakaar, who had Yinsen translate as he welcomed Toni as the greatest mass murderer in the entire history of the United States of America. That probably stunned Toni more than anything…

The very thought made her nauseous and disgusted with herself, how could she have possibly ever thought that her weapons were saving people. 

But as Bakaar continued on and explained that he now wanted Toni to rebuild the Jericho missile for him, which in return,Toni stubbornly refused to help them.

She refused to be even more of a murderer than she already was.

However, as a direct result of refusing to help the Ten Rings, Bakaar had Toni tortured by waterboarding her repeatedly, receiving shocks from the electromagnet in her chest during all of it.

This happened numerous times, until Toni couldn’t take it anymore and ended up finally agreeing.

Toni was then taken outside of the cave where Bakaar showed her how the Ten Rings had an incredible supply of her Stark Industries weapons, including guns and missiles which were being used against the United States Armed Forces.

This obviously already horrified Toni even more than she already was. 

As Bakaar continued his earlier conversation, he told Toni that they had all the materials needed for her to build a Jericho missile, promising that if she began immediately then once she was done, she would be returned home. 

Toni made a small  comment to Yinsen that Bakaar would never actually allow her to get away, with Yinsen confirming that this was true while Bakaar smiled at them.

During the rest of her time in captivity, these events would end up leading Toni to change her life entirely, by becoming the one and only Iron Maiden.

Harry Potter au (not sure you like it). In which houses do you think Francis, Antonio and Roderich would be in?

Hi! I sure do! I grew up reading the series, so the books are very dear to me. Hm, let’s see. To me, all three of them share similar traits, but choose to use them differently.

Toni is textbook Gryffindor. Daring, strong willed, a bit too credulous for his own good, loyal and the heart of any social gathering. Like with most things, there are extremes to these traits. The way I see Toni, he’s someone who has a hard time practicing moderation in his day to day life. So more often than not, people will call him stubborn as opposed to strong willed or reckless instead of daring (and they’d be right in doing so).

Francis would probably be Slytherin. While Toni’s social confidence has no ulterior purpose, I see Francis as the type to use his charisma for his own benefit. He knows the effect he has on people, and he’s willing to use any means to achieve his goals. He’s very picky about what he chooses to disclose about himself and is very conscious of his image. He’s ambitious (but in a way that is easy to overlook), cunning, (mostly) self-serving and a bit vain. (Agh, this sounds so bad! I promise I like Francis! He’s just a lot to handle.)

As for Roderich, I admit that I’m not very familiar with him, but I’ve always enjoyed seeing him get sorted into Ravenclaw in others’ AUs. I think Ravenclaw would suit him best, because he exhibits traits that are associated with the house. He’s clever, creative and musically gifted. (If I remember correctly, Professor Flitwick, the Head of Ravenclaw, was the school’s choir conductor, right? It’s been a while since I last read the books.)

That’s all I have for now. What about you, where would you sort these three? : )

idk how many of you remember this but a few years ago tumblr ran a universally panned ad campaign for (us american) pride month that went "the gayest place on the internet".

well someone planning that campaign dropped in to ask the queer automatticians for advice on that and universally me and the other trans people involved were like "don't do it. i am so serious. don't do it. people on tumblr won't understand that it wasn't automattic who instituted the porn ban, or they will, but they'll recognize that automattic hasn't done anything, hands tied or not, to reverse it. nobody will like this. it will be a disaster." and they thanked us for our thoughts and went ahead with it anyway and then had to do retrospectives about how badly it went and were like "we just didn't know" and [gestures] yeah [edit: i think the person who rbed saying it was queerest place on the internet was right, my brain is fried, sorry! and that's... even worse lmao]
