Camera Obscura

Supplemental to the 2nd and 3rd shoot

Whilst experimenting with aspects of composure and getting people into the shots I also experimented with ISO and noise. I wanted to judge the gains of light against the noise that would incur in the image. I took various shots at high ISO’s (3200 - 6400) I also worked with the aperture.

The above images were shot at high ISO’s. I was sure that I wanted to shoot at ISO100-400 for my work but I needed to assess the losses and gains from shooting at ISO3200-6400. Feedback from my tutors express approval for the softer depth of field (at f1.4). I wanted to try with some smaller apertures to make the most of the projection from the pinhole, which in turn, also requires a smaller aperture for focus. Decreasing the f-stop on the camera had immediate and dramatic effects, and within just a few stops I would be outside my ideal portrait times. I bumped the ISO right up to 3200 and 6400 so I could clearly judge the effects of my f-stops.  Fig2 (above) shows a JPEG taken straight from the RAW file in Lightroom. Even at ISO3200 a moderately large aperture (f5.6) has killed a lot of the light, even with a 30sec exposure. In Fig1 shows the same image but with the exposure level raised in lightroom. The noise here is very noticeable, and any ‘vibrance’ has been lost. At ISO6400  and f8 (Fig3) the image is really struggling. Whilst it is quite impressive in terms of what my (fairly dated) DSLR can capture in low light, it is also clear that the image is now really lacking data, and feels incomplete.

In Fig4 (above) the image has been shot at a high ISO and I have attempted to deal with the noise in post process. The noise was relatively easy to deal with in Lightroom. The image was sharpened using the masking slider to avoid sharpening the noise, and the ‘Luminance’ slider was used to soften the noise. The trade off here it that ‘luminance’ flattens the image, for me it gives the image a ‘Waxy’ quality (if that makes sense) but it is what it is, and this is ultimately the consequence of shooting high ISO. Fig5 embraces the noise. There are many occasions for me when I am not distracted by noise, and in my opinion it can also add something to an image. The problem with noise for me is colour (or lack of) All the above images started to look like old TV’s that were on their last legs. The most difficult part of editing Fig4 was in the colour balance. I played with this over and over, and never did resolve this issue. It was for this reason that I switched to Black and White for Fig5. This removed the distraction of the colour BUT also became a ‘different’ image, one that stood apart from the others in a sense of not belonging to this project.

This gave me a good insight into working at high ISO’s for this project, and the post production that would be required. I have reached current limit in terms of colour correction BUT I also feel that I want to capture more colour and vibrance in camera, rather that trying to work it in post. This reason alone is enough for me to rule out working in this way but when also taking in to account the levels of noise in the images, I will be moving forward with as low an ISO that I can manage. I am hoping that in the new room, with light coming from a different direction, the colour will be better.

ILLUMIANTE: REDUCING NOISE

METHOD ONE: LOWER ISO 

Lowering your ISO is the first and most obvious method in reducing noise in your images. When shooting in the dark, don't be completely reliant on you ISO, if possible shoot at the widest aperture setting you can go around f/2.8/f/4.5. 

METHOD TWO: SHOOT RAW 

Shooting in jpeg already compresses your image, meaning there is already  some noise in the image. Shooting in RAW gets the best out of you images. Also in post production it is easier to fix noise when working with a RAW file.

METHOD THREE: USE A TRIPOD 

This is another more obvious and simple method you can use while taking an image to reduce noise. Using a tripod will eliminate noise every time- bump down the ISO and use a slow shutter speed. We usually rely on ISO as it is usually impossible to take an image with no shake when using a shutter speed slower than 1/60. 

METHOD FOUR: ABOBE ‘DETAIL’ SETTING

Adobe lightroom has a module called detail, here you can control sharpness and noise control. This method isn’t perfect, but when doing it, it is recommended that you zoom in 100% (1:1 on lightroom) for the best effect.  Noise reduction doesn't actually subtract the number of artefacts generated by the sensor. But it manages their structure and luminance qualities, as well as their color and even smoothness.

METHOD FIVE: GIMP
