STRUCTURE PLAN
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My plan is to go and photograph Silverburn centre- I think this is a location I will need permission to photograph so I will need to find contact numbers so I don't get into trouble.
If I get permission I'm going to take orange of different architectural images around the building. My favourite side of the budding is the side closest to the bus stops and its the newest part built onto the centre, it all gold plates and I think on sunny day it will look really cool. The inside of the centre has really cool shapes and even though each section looks so different it keeps the same theme throughout so I know all my images with tie in together.
As its public building I am going to plan my shooting times carefully, which will be difficult as I need to work around shooting on a nice sunny day and working around more off peak times so there's less people to get in the way of.

STRUCTURE EVALUATION
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are my final image for my structure project. Overall I like my final images as I really think it shows off the unique architecture of the building. I shot over a period of a few days some of which were really sunny with blue skies then other days were quite overcast. I think the sunny days create nice highlights on the exteriors of the building and really bring out the golden tones. I think some of the images and quite unique and abstract points of view such especially the close up corner of the building. But they also look really minimalistic due to all the shades of white and gold - which I think looks really good and ties all the images together.
The interior of the building is very open with a lot of really cool architeture with a lot of leading lines and circles creating a cool shape contrast. It was hard to get the perfect shot as there is a lot of objects in the way and a lot of things that could be distracting. Both interior are looking up the the ceiling and I think they're cool as its places most people may not noticed cause its so high up.
After getting back my prints I still really like my images- I think some of the exposures are a bit dark but the colour came out really well. I also still think all my images tie in well together and none of them clash. I love how clear and blue the sky is in one of my exteriors and think its a really nice pop of colour.
Shooting again, I would plan better and shot all my images on more sunny days. As in the interior shots the light incoming from the glass window about and I think direct sunlight could of created some really cool light beams or shadows. I would also use a wider lens and try some different angles of the exterior of the building. There was a lot of lamp posts and trees infront of the building so it was difficult to get a clean shot of the front with out getting anything in the way.

CREATIVE INDUSTRIES
SECTORS WITHIN THE CREATIVE INDUSTRIES
An article posted in 2015 by the Department for Digital, Media, Culture and Sport sectors shows that there are more than 9 creative sectors available. Here are a number of examples
Advertising - This can vary between advertisements that you see on the tv to billboards on the streets. The advertising sector employs the services of other creative industries; from music, fashion, film production and special effects, to animation, games and photography.
Architecture - Architectures can specialise in different types of building work such as sustainable design used by Edward Cullinan Architects Bennetts Associates, also experts in transport infrastructures such as Foster + Partners who designed the new Beijing International Airport, as well as Pascal+Watson who developed underground stations in Johannesburg.
Design: Product, Graphic and Fashion Design - this is used as a strategy in commercially focused businesses to create everything from interiors to interactive interfaces, and furniture to classic album covers.
TV & film - This section is one of the key main areas for the creative industry as without these, we wouldn’t have tv shows, movies, advertisements or billboard displays. The UK has created some of the most influential and celebrated cinema and television in the world. Some examples of employers in the tv/film sector in the UK are Earling Studios, Pinewood Studios, ITV, Sony Pictures, BBC and Channel 4.
IT, Software and Computer Services - This can vary between animation, graphics and game design.
Games - The UK market for games was valued at £5.7bn in 2018, with its influence extending beyond gamer culture into films, technology, print media, and events.
HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT
https://creativeconomy.britishcouncil.org/guide/what-creative-economy/
The term creative industries came about twenty years ago to describe certain activities, some of which are amongst the oldest in history whilst some came to be with the introduction of digital technology. Some of the activities came from cultural roots, which is were the term ‘cultural industries’ came from, it described activities such as theatre, dance, music, film etc. It was obvious at this point that the creative industries was going to be important to the economy for many countries. It also gave many new employment opportunities for lots of people.
Creative industries in the UK is an international success with delivering over 27bn of service exports in 2016 or approximately 11 per cent of all UK exports. A growth strategy developed by the UK industry, aided by the government, aims to increase the creative industries exports to 31bn by 2020. The UK has an innovation-driven economy which between 2000 and 2009, more than 60 per cent of productivity growth came from change.
CURRENT VALUE
The current statistics online that are available are for the year 2017. The website for the government, gov.org, says the value for the creative industries went up from £94.9bn in 2016 to 101.5bn in 2017 which is record breaking for the industry.
IMPACT OF THE CREATIVE INDUSTRIES
Over 91% of the population participate in the creative industries sector. Due to Brexit, the Scottish Government has decided to invest in a new arts fund in order to prevent the problems Brexit will have on the industry. With this new funding taking place, it is hoping that this will help to set new works which is hoping to be staged in not only Scotland but also throughout the rest of the world. The Scottish Cultural sector has greatly benefited within this industry by having a £59 million in European funding but has also been benefited with a £350,000 touring fund for international works by the government which makes performing companies a better opportunity to travel internationally.
FUTURE CAREER DIRECTION
I am going down the photography line- I specially want to be a self employed portrait photographer either working within babies, family, and/or weddings. I will do this by getting my qualifications to learn what I need to do, the reaching out to people already into the business either to intern or second shoot with.
I will also produce my own style to stand out from others already in the industry.

ILLUMINATE PLAN
PLAN A - My first plan for the illuminate breed is to shoot a bridge near my house. It has a really cool structure and a lot of trees around it so I think It would make a cool image I will mainly light up the front of the bridge with my big torch and will experiment with lighting from different angles, such as the point of view of walking one the bridge and lighting up the inside. I will also light up the trees in the back ground to create one depth.
However, it came to my attention that this could potentially be quite dangerous and not legal, as the bridge is over some train tracks and the train run pretty late I don't want to be shining a light directly onto the train driver passing.
PLAN B- my second plan is to shoot something more quirky and weird.. My dad has mannequin heads out in the back garden peeking out of bushes, so I think that could make quite and interesting shot. I am going to mainly light up the head and also the bushes and trees surround to create some depth.

ILLUINATE - EVALUATION
Tumblr media
I quite like the final image for the illuminate brief. My original plan didn’t work out as I intended, I didn’t really think about it as much as I should have. The bridge I wanted to shoot was over a train track and it was Brough to my attention that shining a torch in the direction of a train wasn’t the best idea, and I didn’t want to be out too late and the last train was after midnight.
However, I quickly came up with a plan B and updated my original plan, to shoot some on the mannequin heads in my back garden. I came across some difficulties and some tings didn’t come out as I would have hoped and some detail was lost in the print compared to the digital. Such as in the original RAW image, you could see a lot of light trails that I didn’t want that had to be edited out, every image had some which I couldn’t see on the camera screen. Also during optimisation I cropped the image as you could windows with lights on in the background distracting from the main subject.
When I got the print, a few things came out that I noticed that compared to the digital file. Overall the print looks a lot darker and has ore shadow that made it lose a lot of the detail in the background. I had lit up a few of the trees I the back but as lost in the print.
I have mixed feelings about the white balance. I kinda like the blueish tone to the main focus point of the image as I feel it gives a ‘late night’ and ‘eerie’ vibe, but I think It might look a bit better if it was warmed up a little bit.
If I was too shoot again I would use a brighter torch to light up the trees in the background. I would also maybe try shoot from a different angle and see if anything else makes a more powerful image.
Tumblr media
I then adjusted the exposure and the density of the image- I think this creates better depth in the image as it lets you see so much more of the background.

STRUCTURE RESEARCH
Tumblr media
FIRST IMAGE: JUSTIN REZNICK
This shot is a typical, yet interesting angle to shoot a staircase. I think this perspective increases the detail and gives the shot another level of aesthetic appeal. I like the pattern in the semi-circles getting larger and larger, and the lines going round. This affect give it an almost snail shell like effect. It is evident that there is windows at every floor as each staircase is evenly lit, which plays a big role to keep the detail and pattern ongoing.
Tumblr media
IMAGE TWO
The large size of skyscrapers should be captured in you image, I think this unique composition the photographer has used to get this shot achieves that. You can't see where it starts or where it ends, and the photographer has taken it wide enough to fit in a number of floors, making it seem unimaginably big. It’s seems so close so the view can see the building in so much detail and gives it another level of interest. The image is evenly lit so the nice pastel colours really stand out, and are even through out the shot.
Tumblr media
IMAGE THREE: DAVID GUTIERREZ
The composition is perfect in this shot. I like the symmetry, and this the leading line direct your eye from the edge right down the tunnel. I think this is a very Clean shot, and it might be difficult in Glasgow to retreat something as slique as this, as it looks very clean and new, the lighting adds to this as it very even and lights up the tunnel nicely. I think the thick black lines on the floor and the path break up the image nicely instead of it being one big circle and making it almost like an optical illusion.
Tumblr media
IMAGE FOUR: PAUL EIS
Photographer Paul Eis reimagines building in Hamburg by digitally replacing their original facades with new vibrant colours. He says he hopes the series will help show there is more to these cities the white and grey facades, and believes the addition to colour can help to highlight the interesting and unique qualities of building. All of his images have a uniformly blue background, which take the emphasis off the background and more on the building itself. The chosen colours have created a nice contrast, and the chosen colours work well with the structure and they are quite random, as are the lengths and heights of the structure.

IMAGE FIVE: KEVIN SAINT GREY
Grey is a fine art photographer with a minimalist aesthetic style.

ILLUMIANTE: REDUCING NOISE
METHOD ONE: LOWER ISO
Lowering your ISO is the first and most obvious method in reducing noise in your images. When shooting in the dark, don't be completely reliant on you ISO, if possible shoot at the widest aperture setting you can go around f/2.8/f/4.5.
METHOD TWO: SHOOT RAW
Shooting in jpeg already compresses your image, meaning there is already  some noise in the image. Shooting in RAW gets the best out of you images. Also in post production it is easier to fix noise when working with a RAW file.
METHOD THREE: USE A TRIPOD
This is another more obvious and simple method you can use while taking an image to reduce noise. Using a tripod will eliminate noise every time- bump down the ISO and use a slow shutter speed. We usually rely on ISO as it is usually impossible to take an image with no shake when using a shutter speed slower than 1/60.
METHOD FOUR: ABOBE ‘DETAIL’ SETTING
Adobe lightroom has a module called detail, here you can control sharpness and noise control. This method isn’t perfect, but when doing it, it is recommended that you zoom in 100% (1:1 on lightroom) for the best effect.  Noise reduction doesn't actually subtract the number of artefacts generated by the sensor. But it manages their structure and luminance qualities, as well as their color and even smoothness.
METHOD FIVE: GIMP
“The basic idea behind selective Gaussian blur is that areas in the photo with contrast below a certain threshold gets blurred. You could think of it like the opposite of unsharpen mask (that sharpens everything with contrast above a certain threshold.” https://www.gimp.org/tutorials/Selective_Gaussian_Blur/

ILLUMINATE RESEARCH
Tumblr media
IMAGE ONE: CARYN ESPLIN
I find this image really interesting, the vibrant blue colour of the sky contrast really well with the orange of the arched rock. I think a number of lights (lighting directions) may have been used in the making of this image, one front the front lighting the tree, one from behind the rock pointing upwards, as you can see the light is much stronger of the inside of the arch and creates dark shadows on the rock we can see, the rocks in the distance are also lit up. I believe there was little to no natural light as you can see it appears to be there “magic hour” where you have around 20 minutes to capture an image when the sky is that dark blue colour.
Tumblr media
IMAGE TWO: DAVE BLACK
Again this image is really visually pleasing because of the contrast between the really vibrant colours. They direction of the shadows suggest that there is a lighting source coming from the bottom right hand corner close tho the rock, I also think there is a light under the arch facing upwards because it is a lot brighter and more vibrant. Also the vibrant red colour of the rock suggests its either edited post production or it is using a red lighting source.
Tumblr media
IMAGE THREE: HAROLD ROSS
This image caught my eye, to me it looks like an “alien abduction” image. The image kind of suggest that there is a lighting source coming from above, but i think the photographer has lit the washing pole, grass and some of the surrounding trees and plants. If the lighting was from above there would be an obvious shadow of the washing lines. I like how the photographer has left the trees in the background dark as it makes an interesting background and not distracting from the main subject.
Tumblr media
IMAGE FOUR: LANCE KEIMIG
It looks like there is some natural light in the image as the sky is not completely dark/blue, but there is definitely some controlled light on the rock. It looks like the photographer has light coming from both the right and left side, shining diagonally onto the rock. As there is two very evident highlights and shadows on the rock. I think the light is coming from quite low down because of the way the shadow is on the ground behind the smaller rock, and the light at the top isn't as strong.
Tumblr media
IMAGE FIVE: CARYN ESPIN
This second, but very different, image by Caryn Espin. Is different to the other images i found. With light painting, its easy to forget that you can make simple images like this look more interesting. The lighting in this top left hand corner coming diagonally, as you can se where all the highlights are, such as on the glass bottle, the clock face, also because of the shadows. Espin also states on his website that she moves the background while taking the image to create the blurred background.

ARTISAN RESEARCH
DEFINITION: An artisan (from French: artisan, Italian: artigiano) is a skilled craft worker who makes or creates things by hand that may be functionalor strictly decorative, for example furniture, decorative arts, sculptures, clothing, jewellery, food items, household items and tools or even mechanisms such as the handmade clockwork movement of a watchmaker. Artisans practice a craft and may through experience and aptitude reach the expressive levels of an artist.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWubGUwxudc
VIDEO ONE: I love this video, i love how the videographer really showed the detail that went into designing this bed spread. I think the filming and the music really add into the idea of how delicate the process is. My favourite filming technique is when the scan past the work to get all the detail of the art in and to see it up close. I also like how it shows the artists face and the concentration, compared to just showing the work.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwIwJPfk_6M
VIDEO TWO: In this video I really like The different angles used to really capture the work being done. I like the close ups of the wood being worked on and the shallow depth of field to really see the work. I also like how they mostly have music over the video but at certain clips they put the sounds of them working over the top of it, i think that was a really cool idea.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqXjCFNX6HQ
This video is a little different to what i originally had in my head for an artisan clip, but this is really different to most food preparation videos you usually see. I love seeing every step by step thing that goes into making the final meal. My favourite video technique used it when the focus in during the shot, so the image goes from blurry to focused in the clip.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBb9O-aW4zI&list=PLXoDJJrqvCmekCvZS5GqUkajpcLxv5q9P&index=2
This video is probably one of my favourites. I love the quality of the film, and I love the range of angles used to really capture the worker and his work. I like how you see the worker and his interview then it goes to shots of his work and continues his voice over. I think getting woodwork clips would be easy for me to get as my dad is a carpenter and i would have access to his work shop.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7rAs_ZEgRE
This video is really cool, and i love how they capture so many aspects of the work. But there is a few things about this video that i don't like, so i wanted to include it to show the things i will try to avoid. The first thing is camera shake. I will try my hardest to have less to no amount of visible camera shake by using tripods. I also don't like how they put pictures in the video, i will only have video clips

CHEAP RESEARCH
Tumblr media
This image is really eye catching, the bold bright colours and different shapes really drag you in. This image is created using refraction, the water in the wine glasses is the reason the colour of the bottles behind are switching round. I  think the photographer has really though about the order of the coloured bottles and the placement of the wine glasses to get the most pleasing shot.
Tumblr media
This image really stood out to me, because of the use of shadows. The lighting is placed perfectly as to make the handle of the mug into a love heart. I think thats a really cute idea and makes the mug so much more special. The key to getting this image is obviously getting the lighting exactly right to make the heart perfect. I also like how the have the saucer in the photo with the mug to emphasise the fact that its just a mug.
Tumblr media
I love the use of reflection to make this image a lot more visually appealing. I love the bold colours which makes it really stand out again the black background. I also think the contrast of the sharp pencil shape and the round sharpening add something really interesting to the overall image. I think thee photographer really put thought into the shapes and sizes of the pencils and sharpening, instead of just having all the pencils the same height
Tumblr media
I love the images that have a product trying to mimic something else, to give a certain thing, in this case, the spoon, a completely different aspect to it. It also makes you look at it longer and really think about it as in a first glance looks normal, but is quite humorous that its a spoon.
Tumblr media
This image is really cool, and really aesthetically pleasing. The lighting is perfect as to highlight just certain parts of the fork, and makes it look so elegant for just a fork. It highlights it at all the right places and gives the image really good form.
I think it would be quite difficult to achieve this as there would be a lot of reflection from the fork to get such a dark image, so i would experiment with different light fixtures and flags to get the perfect shot.

MOVIE POSTER RESEARCH
Tumblr media
POSTER ONE - TITANIC:
The first image I've chosen is the titanic poster. I like the softness and the emotion portrayed by the portrait of the main characters. The poster is a clear indication of what the film is about, the titanic which is the main subject of this poster, and shows the characters very intimate as its a romantic film.
To produce this, i could go to the docks, and get pictures of the front of boats. and get a few of my friends to model for me.
Tumblr media
The New York skyline is one aspect that really makes this poster, to recreate this i can get a good skyline image of Glasgow as it resembles New York a lot. I would get my friends to model for me and look for clothing that is as similar to the ones the model is wearing in the poster.
Tumblr media
For this image, i could quite easily get to the beach and shoot, i would ask take some images of the grass to put over the front of the image. I would get my models to sit in the studio and use a soft box light to get that diffused look.
Tumblr media
I love this movie poster, and i think it would be one of the easier ones to shoot, which is why i wouldn't do it. I would just shoot a plain brick wall if i couldn't find a green one and edit it to match. Again i would shoot my models with a soft box to get that diffused soft look. I would probably shoot the couple then the individual separately.
Tumblr media
I think the lighting in this poster is really interesting and i think i would struggle to make it look right, as you can see light coming in from behind but all the characters are perfectly lit up. But could get the background in any woods in Scotland and shoot my models all together.

CATCH ME IF YOU CAN: RESEARCH
Tumblr media
HEINZ KLUETMEIER:
Heinz Kluetmeier is a German-born American sports photographer for sports illustrated and has over 100 Sports Illustrated covers to her name.
I found that usually in tennis pictures, it is quite difficult to capture the player face, like in this image, the player is wearing a baseball hat, which makes a lot of shadow on their face. I know this could pose challenge in a number of sports. But its all about the timing, like this action shot.
I think its important in spots photography to see the real action, so to capture them in mid pose, with the ball in shot.
Tumblr media
BRAD MANGIN:
Brad Mangin is a sports photographer based in San Francisco Bay, and photographs major league baseball for Sports Illustrated since 1987, he also covers golf tournaments like the image shown above.
This picture especially caught my eye because of the beautiful colour and silhouette. It’s a really unique take on Golf photography, and the timing is really great. I like the angle Mangin took the photo, so you can see more of the sky but the golfer is still prominent in the shot. I also like how is a cool action shot, so you can see all the grass/dirt from the ground flying up.
Tumblr media
NEIL LEIFER:
Starting out as a photographer in the 1960′s. Neil Leifer was already a professional photographer as a young teenager, his pictures began regularly appearing in every major national magazine, including the Saturday Evening Post, Look, LIFE, Newsweek, Time and, most often, Sports Illustrated. He became a staff photographer for Sports Illustrated and Times Magazine. He has many many famous photographs published and 16 books.
This image is called “Muhammad Ali Vs. Cleveland Williams, Houston Astrodome 1966″, I love the birds eye view of the ring and the perfect timing of the shot. It has so much detail, which makes it so much more interesting and its so different to any other boxing image I’ve seen.
Tumblr media
HY PESKIN:
Hy Peskin was a “master action photographer” in the 1940-1960″s. He worked for sports illustrated and he was the first staff photographer the magazine hired. Steve Fine, the director of photography at Sports Illustrated said "The number of famous pictures that he made here is astonishing," said Steve Fine, the director of photography at Sports Illustrated.“Under the name Hy Peskin, he was best known for tearing himself away from the news media pool to find an unusual vantage point. Some of his best photographs were taken during Brooklyn Dodgers games at Ebbets Field, where he would sometimes climb the roof or crouch in the aisles while his competitors were huddled together in another section.”
This particular picture I chose, was because its different to most sports photography you see, usually its not as zoomed in and you can see more of the action. I like this one as you really get a feel for how the layer was feeling, you get a sense of the focus he had. I also like how even though its so zoomed in, it is still obvious what sport it is, baseball.
Tumblr media
WALTER LOOSS
Walter Looss is a professional sports photographer for sports illustrated. Known for his award winning photographs focusing on sports and beauty.
I love this shot for its unique aspect on sports photography, its obviously a set up image but it works as sports photography and you can see his uniform. The lighting is really cool and really emphasises the serious look on his face.

SEEING THE LIGHT: RESEARCH
Tumblr media
SUNLIGHT (SHARP): I love this image, I love the warm light and the sharpness of the image. To achieve this photo I will really need to be patience and wait for a nice clear day and shoot during the golden hour to get this effect on my image. The light used in this shot is really intense and harsh, as it really lights up her hair but creates shadow on her face. There is big contest between the light and the shadow.
Tumblr media
WINDOW LIGHT: I love how this image has so much shadows, the window is producing a really direct light onto the model, producing an obvious contrast between the highlights and the shadows. I think to recreate an image similar, I would need to use flags so no light is reflecting of anything onto the side of the face, to create hard shadows.
Tumblr media
CLOUDY LIGHT: Clouds area our natural diffuser, and gives a completely different look to sunlight, the clouds make this image look really delicate and gives it a bluish tint, which makes its seem colder. I like the minimal shadows in this image as it gives it a really soft look.
Tumblr media
PRONOUNCED SHADOWS: Dappled/speckled light is a really cool way of creating your own shadows, or using trees/fences etc around you to create a compelling look to your image. In this image, she has used a flower and perhaps natural window light to creat the harsh shadow form the flowers and the side of her face. I like how there still light getting through and she has a nice catchlight in her eye.
Tumblr media
SUNLIGHT (SOFT): This image is similar technique to my first image, but has a completely different look/feel. This image is a lot softer and the light looks a lot more whiter than golden. The direction of the light seems like it is coming from behind, as her hair is so bright. I also think the photographer has used reflectors at the front to brighten up her face.

WHO AM I: FIRST ATTEMPT
I really like how my first attempt at my who am i project came out, I think all the images separately look great and really flow well together.
The first image above is the object that represents me is my key necklace, which says “BRAVE” on it. It means a lot to me as it was a gift from people really close to me and it has a really special meaning to me. As a mostly introverted person, I am always trying to push myself to step out my comfort zone, so this always reminds me that I am brave and i can do anything, so i wear it pretty much all the time.
The second image to represent me: I found an old photograph of me and ripped it in half, in the paper picture its b&w and i look really moody, and me now is bright and colourful and happy. It shows the “new me” I have discover in the past year, the newer and more joyful version of me.
The first image to represent a location that represents me, is my neck tattoo of a thistle. I got this tattoo this year for Scotland, my home. I love and am proud of my country, and love thistles.
I picked the blue background as first off, its my bedroom wall colour, but originally I associated the colour blue with sadness, but after research I found this: “Blue is the color of the sky and sea. It is often associated with depth and stability. It symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, and heaven. Blue is considered beneficial to the mind and body.”- I love this as th really represents everything I have aspired to be and am aiming to show others.
