Though British farming is arguably at the most precarious point in its long history – thanks to changes caused by Brexit and food industry subsidies, lack of clear food production policies and increased concern over environmental issues – more women than ever are choosing a career in agriculture and, more importantly, moving into leadership roles.

Back in the 1970s, Holly Collins was studying for her A-levels in Sussex. While her friends sent off their university applications, she wrote to the Royal Agricultural College asking for an entry form, hoping to follow her dream of becoming a farmer.

“They wrote back with the following answer: ‘Dear Miss Collins, we do not admit women.’”

Undeterred, she worked on a farm the following summer: “A lot of the tasks then were manual labour, so I’d just turn up at the farm gate and ask for a job. I was paid much less than the male students I worked with because I was female. The farmer’s father told him that, because I was the hardest worker, he should pay me the same as them – but he didn’t.”

Things, says the 64-year-old who now has her own upland farm, Hollin Bank, at the head of Coniston Water in the Lake District, have improved a lot for women in agriculture since then.

Minette Batters, the first ever female president of the National Farmers’ Union of England and Wales (NFU), may have stepped down this spring after six years in office, but women are still well represented in the union, with Rachel Hallos, a South Pennines farmer, installed as NFU vice-president and Abi Reader as deputy president for NFU Cymru. The Great Yorkshire Show has just got its first female show director in its 186-year history – dairy farmer Rachel Coates takes over after this year’s show in July. In the field of specialist skills, the UK has also just appointed its first female wool grader. Amy-Jo Barton, 22, is based at British Wool (formerly the British Wool Marketing Board) in Bradford where she sorts wool by hand based on style and characteristics; a job she finds “very therapeutic”.

While women comprised 17% of farmers in 2019, data from the Office for National Statistics for 2023 shows that of the 104,700 registered farmers, 22% are female. In the broader category of managers in agricultural services, women make up 32% of the workforce. According to recent figures from the Higher Education Statistics Agency, 64% of agricultural students are women. For an industry that historically relies on father-to-son succession to pass on land and which used to exclude women from many of its educational establishments, farming has come a long way.

Coates, incoming director of the Great Yorkshire Show, says: “Women have always been the backbone of a farm. Now they’re no longer in the kitchen tied to the Aga, they’re at the forefront of the industry. It’s good to see this take-up of leadership roles.”

Louisa Dines, principal lecturer in agronomy at Harper Adams University in Shropshire, thinks farming has lagged behind in terms of gender diversity but is finally catching up with other industries.

“Farmers’ wives and daughters were always important – farms are typically family businesses and intertwined with home life – but women used to operate below the radar,” she says. “Historically local meetings were in the pub or village hall. Wives often weren’t invited or had to look after the children. Even if they did go, it can be intimidating walking into a room full of men, but new communication platforms – such as social media and video conferencing – have made it easier for women to take part.”

There are more than 14,000 members of the Facebook group Ladies Who Lamb and farmers such as the Yorkshire Shepherdess and the Red Shepherdess have huge followings on TikTok and Instagram. Dines says she recently attended an agritech conference to promote links between women in farming in Poland, Ukraine and England. Previously these women had worked in isolation but not had a sense of community. “It was so interesting to see how far we’ve come.”

Traditions need to change more, though. The average age of a British farmer is 59 and the business is still typically passed down the male side of the family. A 2022 survey in Northern Ireland found that inheritance was the second biggest challenge faced by women in farming. The biggest was male dominance.

Molly Lewis, whose family have farmed sheep on 250 acres of pasture in Powys, Wales, for 350 years, says this attitude is starting to shift. The 20-year-old plans to take over when her father and his brother retire. She splits her time between working in the family business and the local agricultural market.

“In the past, sometimes men felt pressured to take on the farm even if their heart wasn’t in it, but now it goes to whoever is interested. I’ve noticed a lot more women happily getting involved. It feels natural, especially here. We have an open hill farm in the Elan Valley, and do a lot of community work with all our neighbours. You see women and girls on the hills doing the same jobs as the men and no one thinks anything of it.”

Lewis also talks of the community’s fury at the Welsh government’s sustainable farming scheme – the post-Brexit plan for funding the industry which includes ensuring 10% of farmland is under tree cover.

Collins’s farm has low densities of mixed livestock and a nice sideline in educational courses teaching traditional farming skills such as dry stone walling and coppicing. It’s currently host to two masters students researching finance and birdlife. She brought in two women – Megan Jones and Katherine Andrews – to manage Hollin Bank alongside her.

She says she has had difficulties with “a lack of respect” from male farmers. “But I am learning at a late age and from the wonderful young women who work with me that you don’t have to instil fear in others to succeed in this very male world. We try to be warm and encouraging of anyone who is interested. I’m not sure this is a ‘female’ attitude to farming but I suspect it might be.”

None of the three at Hollin Bank grew up in agricultural families, bucking the tradition of succession. While Collins had a “striking ambition” to farm her whole life, her colleagues originally worked in conservation and nature restoration.

“As 70% of the UK is farmland, I wanted to understand how conservation and agriculture intertwine,” says Andrews. “I also believe we need to localise the food economy to save food miles, create jobs and deepen our connection to the land.”

If farming is in crisis it may be this new generation who look to change the status quo who will be able to find a resolution. All of them seem keen to evolve. Coates’s big ambition for the Yorkshire Agricultural Society is to engage young people because “we need to make farming relevant – there are going to be changes in agriculture over the next few years and we need to adapt”.

Dines points to the increased importance of marketing and communication – from farm shops and crafts to environmentally friendly farming practice – “all the public-facing activities at which women excel”.

Jones, who worked in restoration before joining Hollin Bank two years ago, also points to the need for communication within the indusry as well as with the public.

“We need to strengthen food systems that value farmers’ extensive knowledge of the landscapes they work in,” she says. “I think we need to listen to farmers and figure out what works financially and ecologically. How can we build resilient ecosystems?”

The reason so many more women have moved into farming is perhaps best explained when Jones talks about what she enjoys most about her work.

“My favourite thing about working on a farm is the daily and seasonal rhythms. Each day you adapt and respond to the environment and the animals. Days when we move the sheep or cows are always good days, walking with them is like a moving meditation. For someone who spent very little time doing practical work growing up, I find working with my hands very rewarding and empowering – especially as a woman.”

What do you headcannon as the sisters middle names?

Honestly, nonnie, I never really considered the sisters' middles name too much, but I actually did end up giving them some in part of my neverending, way too long and somehow not extensive enough, next gen series planning. That said, I'm not like. 110% attached to them or anything, so if they change at some point, don't be surprised lmao. But here we go:

Prue's is Helena, inspired by the family tree and the witch used in the 'To Call Upon Our Ancestors' spell. I felt like Prudence Helena Halliwell sounds pretty, and I like how Helena kind of matches the older nature of Prue's first name.

Piper's is Marie, which is obviously inspired by Holly Marie Combs! Beyond being Holly's middle name, I like that it feels similar to Piper's name, just a cute, girl next door vibe. It's simple, but I like it. (Initially, all the way back in 2014 when I started my next gen wiki, I just gave all of the sisters their actresses' first name as their middle name, which I did not like for more than five minutes. I do like Marie for Piper, however.)

Phoebe's is Grace, another family tree name. I think it's a cute middle name, and I also feel like virtue middle names are super popular? (Maybe this is just me. Actually, it could very well just be me. Fun Abi fact is that my middle name actually is a virtue middle name!) There's also something a little funny about Phoebe as a teenager, miss rebellious teenage dirtbag, having Grace as a middle name. But also, considering one meaning of grace is refinement of movement, something with our physical fighter, a skill that requires knowing how to move your body, having that name is fun. (Also fun story: neither my sister nor I knew what graceful actually meant for genuinely most of our lives because our mom only used it sarcastically when one of did something clumsy, and so we both just thought that it meant clumsy or something because!! we never heard it used in any other context!! we do know now though obviously.)

Paige's is a much more wildcard one in that it's actually Audrey, which is one that I'm not sure where I pulled it out of. I think that part of is was that I just liked the name, and I thought it captured some of that cool vibe that goes with Paige's name.

But yeah! Full honesty, I didn't put a ton of thought into these back when I initially did them as much as I just thought that they sounded nice and pulled from obvious places (actresses and family tree), but I do kinda vibe with them anyways so.

Dobrý večer, prinášam vám svoju prvú knižnú recenziu :D

Celý koncept tejto knihy bol podľa môjho názoru veľmi originálny a zaujímavý. Často sa vo fantasy literatúre môžeme stretnúť s tieňovou mágiou, ale ešte nikdy som nečítala knihu, ktorá by to spracovala týmto spôsobom. V Knihe noci existujú tieňotvorcovia - ľudia s oživeným tieňom. Títo ľudia vedia svoj tieň ovládať, akoby to bola ich ďalšia končatina. Dokonca môžu do svojho tieňa vložiť spomienky a pocity, na ktoré chcú zabudnúť. Avšak na to, aby ich tieň zostal oživený, ho musia kŕmiť krvou. Je tu ešte jeden háčik. Ak budete svoj tieň kŕmiť priveľa alebo cudziou krvou, môže sa od vás tieň odtrhnúť a spôsobiť naozaj veľa problémov.

Postavy, dej, celkový dojem: ↓

Postavy:

Hlavná postava je bývalá zlodejka Charlie Hallová, ktorá sa rozhodla skoncovať so svojím bývalým spôsobom života. Zamestnala sa v bare, našla si frajera, ktorý platil polovicu jej nájomného, a snažila sa zabudnúť na svoju minulú prácu.

Charlie sa mi ako postava páčila a jej osobnosť bola dobre napísaná. Je to impulzívna, ale šikovná mladá žena, ktorá však často robí zlé rozhodnutia (a je si toho vedomá).

Vince je Charliin frajer, ktorý býva spolu s Charlie a jej sestrou Posey. Jeho postava sa mi na začiatku zdala nemastná-neslaná a ktovieako neprispieval k deju, ale to bolo zamerné. Jediné, čo o Vinceovi na začiatku vieme, je, že nemá žiaden tieň a nerád rozpráva o svojej minulosti. Jeho osobnosť sa však počas deja vykryštalizovala a čoskoro sa z neho stala naozaj veľmi zaujímavá postava.

Dej:

Na začiatku sa dej hýbal celkom pomaly. Autorka nám predstavovala postavy a vysvetľovala, ako funguje mágia v tomto svete. Toto bol môj hlavný problém s touto knihou. Autorka vysvetľovala magický systém takým spôsobom, ktorý pripomínal takzvaný info-dumping. Dala nám veľa informácií naraz a strácala som sa v tom. Hneď od začiatku boli používané slová ako tieňotvorca, oživený tieň, bábkar, maska (nie tá na tvár, ale povolanie) a rôzne iné pomenovania vecí, ktorým som vôbec nerozumela. Autorka potom vysvetlila význam týchto slov, ale potrvalo mi celkom dlho kým som vôbec pochopila, ako táto tieňová mágia funguje. Častokrát bol spomenutý nejaký detail (väčšinou nejaký druh tieňotvorcu alebo nejaká magick�� kniha), o ktorom som vedela, že ho autorka spomenula a vysvetlila niekde na začiatku knihy, no bolo ťažké tieto informácie už spätne nájsť.

Avšak, keď už som si zvykla na tento magický systém, a prijala, že niektoré vysvetlenia už pravdepodobne ani nenájdem, príbeh nebol vôbec zlý. Bolo vidno, že si autorka dala na tomto magickom systéme záležať a bol naozaj detailný a originálny.

So samotným dejom som nemala žiadne veľké problémy. Hýbal sa tempom, ktoré dávalo zmysel a nič nebolo ani príliš pomalé (až na úplný začiatok knihy), ani príliš urýchlené. Hlavne sa mi páčil záver knihy (približne posledných 100 strán), pretože sa tam stále niečo dialo a stále ma niečo prekvapilo. Úplný záver knihy (posledná kapitola) bola šok za šokom. A už úplne ma dostala posledná dvojstrana. Túto knihu som dočítala, a hneď som si išla vyhľadať, kedy výjde druhý diel.

Celkový dojem:

Dobrá kniha s originálnym nápadom a zaujímavými postavami, ale na začiatku bolo trocha ťažké pochopiť, o čo tam ide, a ako funguje mágia v tom svete.

i wonder why krista behaves differently towards her ex boyfriend who abused her for two years than she does her new boyfriend who she loves, trusts, makes her feel safe and who she is considering spending her life with.

i mean, there must be a reason surely but i can't quite put my finger on what it could be.

also, what does "erase her original personality" even mean? until krista was found in that basement, the only thing we knew about her personality was what other people (mainly her sister) said and the person we saw through melanie and holly's eyes.

krista is a good person. she's kind, caring, supportive and sympathetic (whether they deserve it or not). that's her personality and yes, she can be ruthless but she's like that with other people, not with her boyfriend and we've seen how cold she can be towards leo. like, when she overheard him say he didn't trust her with abi and then when he told her not to come to david's funeral but she isn't like that with him all the time and why would she be?

also, a big part of her personality is wanting to prove herself and like, even her comment about how paul is exactly like her father and thinks of her the same way in not being able to amount to anything or believe she has what it takes to make it. hell, they literally addressed why she's struggled and how she ended up in so many bad situations and that it was because she was terrified of failing which she isn't anymore.

none of that is erasing her personality. it's establishing who she is as a character and why she's the way she is.

also, leo & krista are both characters who can be quite cold, ruthless and vicious but the show has made it very clear that those are traits that everyone around them would see. that they show their true colours to everyone but each other and that's not a bad thing.

dia juga bukan anak emas guru yang tentu bakal jadi highlight seangkatan.

gak terlalu bandel, gak yang kalem-kalem juga.

sepanjang sejarah enam tahun gue kenal dia, kayaknya gue baru denger masalah berantemnya baru dua kali.

satu kali di kelas tiga.

sekalinya lagi, waktu baru-baru ini. di kelas enam. itu pun gue gak ngerti kenapa. mana berantemnya sama bestienya dia. cuma adu pelototan aja, sih. gak sampe tonjok-tonjokan kayak kelas tiga, mungkin? gue gak inget pasti. soalnya, waktu itu gue juga gak yang ngepoin banget walau sebetulnya kepo berat. bahkan gue diem sendirian di kelas, sementara seluruh murid yg terdiri dari tiga puluh satu itu ngacir keluar buat ngiringin dia yang dibawa ke uks. sampe kapa dateng ke kelas entah tujuannya apa. kayaknya setiap ada insiden yg ngelibatin dia, kapa selalu ada buat ngeceng-cengin gue. terbukti, 3 kali. yak, gue cuma denial aja. berusaha ngehindar, padahal kalo manusia normal pada umumnya, tetep ikut buat ngepoin. kenapa gue seolah-olah gak peduli? justru di situ yang bikin dipertanyakan. tapi, namanya bocah...? mikir sejauh apa sih emangnya?

yang bikin orang-orang tau dia tuh, waktu kelas 4 dan saat itu kelas diacak. bikin gue jelas-jelas kepisah sama dia. berdasar yang gue denger dan menurut pengakuan dia sendiri walau nyatanya dia ngasih tau lewat tulisan rija, ada seorang cewek yang suka ama dia. normal. yang gue tau pun dulu, nabila, alifah, naya pun pernah crushin dia. lo tau? sampe naya pernah bikinin surat buat dia dan melalui perantara gue, naya minta gue baca maybe? gak tau. pokoknya dia ngasih aja ke gue. tapi, sayangnya belom sempet gue buka full walau gue udah baca sekilas kalo isinya “aku suka sama—“, udah direbut duluan sama cowok yang duduk di samping gue sambil dia bilang “masih kecil pacar-pacaran.”. holly shit. bahkan gue baru tau kalo dia sepeka itu. padahal gue belom baca semuanya.

gue sbg temen yang baik buat ngejaga rahasia, susah payah buat pertahanin itu. dan berakhir gue yang pulang-pulang dengan badan rentek semua, terutama di tangan. iya. gue ribut fisik ama dia. kenapa sih dia gak mau ngalah? tapi untungnya dia gak ngebaca. cuma langsung dilecekin kayaknya. hahaha. kayaknya cuma gue yang bisa inget ini. bahkan nayanya sendiri gak inget. apalagi dia?

ya gitu. gue kira dia bakal kepincut ama cewek sebelah. yang sekelas ama dia. tapi, pas gue ngirim surat yang diwakilin ama husna. duh. kok kesannya dia bales dendam karena gue gak nulis pake tulisan sendiri dan yg dia sampein juga ditulisin ama rija? yaudah. dia bilang, gak pacaran. cuma ardhia yang suka sama dia. aduh maap gue nyebut merk. abisnya gereget sih. soalnya, waktu itu emang lagi gencar-gencarnya pada pacaran. apalagi ama kenekadan anam ama hawnan yang pernah send gift yupi ke gue. asal lo tau, itu seumur idup gue digituin. tapi gue gak ikut arus kok. semoga dia juga.

karena di saat yang bikin gue nyesel seumur hidup, entah dengan tujuan apa, gue merasa dibodohi banget. gue ditarik abis-abisan dari kelas a ke kelas b, yang kalo dilewatin pake jalan paksaan kayak gitu jelas gak bakal enak. gue masih bersyukur tangan gue gak putus detik itu juga. tapi ternyata, anak kelas b diajakin buat kompromi. yaah, dulu masih banyak yang kayak jadi timses gue ama dia. itu dulu. makanya ada beberapa yang juga narikin badannya. sumpah. gue masih gak paham buat apa dan apa tujuannya. begitu gue sampe kelasnya dan akhirnya pergumulan itu dilepas, gue refleks kabur dan gak bisa lagi nahan malu.

sebelomnya gue emang pernah mimpi sejenis itu. persis. persis sepersis persisnya. tapi, bedanya kalo di mimpi… GAK GAMAU GUA CERITAIN…. gak bisa. maaf ya.

entah kenapa gue gak bisa nangis. sampe di kelas gue, gue malah pura-pura nangis. yang padahal kalo gue nangis beneran bisa bikin mereka iba dan insiden sialan ini gak bakal dilanjut. tapi, begitu gue ngaku kalo gue nangis boongan, lagi-lagi kapa dateng dan bilang, “belom selesai ya bro” gitu kira-kira.

dan ya, mereka serius.

abis solat dan lagi istirahat, mereka dateng buat jemput gue lagi. gue ama syafira kabur ke atas. yang lama-lama pada nyamper ke atas juga. padahal, gue udah berharap kalo itu tempat paling aman. walaupun, gue belom pernah ngelintasin wilayah sejauh itu sampe hampir ke lapangan bambon, iya, gue kabur nyampe ke sono. tapi, gue nekad cuma gara-gara itu. apalagi ama labik yang bener-bener jemput gue ke atas. gila? selebay itu?

gue sempet liat palanya dia di ujung jalan. cuma ya, sampe situ aja untungnya. pas gue udah feeling mulai sepi dan drama ini berakhir, tapi gue masih gak yakin kalo semuanya udah aman, sampe ida dan asipa jemput gue. gue trust issue dong? bodo amat mau udah bel masuk apa belom, gue tetep kekeuh gak mau balik kelas sampe asipa narik gue sambil bilang “udah udah, aman terkendali!” terus ida bilang kalo si dia mau diginiin asal dikasih duit sepuluh rebu. wkwkwk. harga dirinya sebatas duit cebanan.

yang gue sadarin, mulai saat itu, kita udah lost interaction. gak pernah lagi kayak dulu. bener-bener sekaku itu. seawkward itu. bahkan lebih-lebih dari kecanggungan yang hakiki. gue gak tau penyebabnya gimana-gimana. yang pasti semua faktor ada di dia. maksud gue, gue gak berani bertindak duluan karena dia pun udah jutek ke gue. gak yang gitu banget, sih. cuma, yaa, kayak orang gak kenal aja. saling buang muka, kalo ketauan eye contact pun ya, datar-datar aja.

mungkin sejak saat itu, emang udah waktunya kita gak lagi bisa sama-sama lagi sejak gue ngerasain sendiri perubahannya. entah dia juga ngerasain atau nggak. yang pasti, semua ini terjadi setelah peristiwa sialan itu.

sejak dia tau, walau taunya bukan dari gue langsung—tapi dari orang-orang, no more laughing together again, no more ngejailin each other. gak ada lagi yang bisa kita lakuin, apalagi itu dilakuin berdua. sejak dia tau, semuanya berhenti sampe di situ. dia kayak berusaha buat avoid sebisa mungkin.

walau dulu main polisi maling gak sesering kita pas masih sekelas, gue gak pernah lagi nargetin dia. dan ada satu titik di mana bikin gue merasa disorienting. jadi, gue ama benaia nemu hapi dan dia lagi jongkok buat ngumpet. owchhh shid. gue langsung bingung, ini gimana kalo benaia take hapi, masa...

mukanya dia juga keliatan... jujur, gak gampang buat nilai ekspresi dia. cuma, yang gue cerna, dia mandang gue agak dingin. sebenernya gak juga sih. soalnya muka dia emang datar terus. jadi, untungnya aja nih ya, gue kedapetan buat nyomot hapi. bukan dia. bayangin aja kalo sampe iya. tengsin kuadrat gue.

yah, pernah juga pas mau tes masuk mtsn. gue lupa banget kalo dia sering ikut les buat masuk mts ato enggak. tapi, puncaknya, pas mau masuk mtsn dan kita tesnya di lab. waktu itu... dia udah ngambil tempat duduk yang ngebelakangin gue. dia duduk berdua bareng hapi, di samping kanan gue udah penuh. udah ada ida, kapa, sama hawnan. tapi, samping kiri gue kosong dan akhirnya mereka berdua disuruh pindah ke samping gue dan lo tau? di samping gue tetep hapi... bukan dia.

udah kerasa kan sampe sini, kita seasing apa?

I'm going to London Night 1 and this will be my first time going to a Taylor Swift concert 💖 Speaking of The Good Witch, my favourite tracks are Watch and There It Goes! Between the 2 Maisie albums, I also prefer YSUFT mostly bc I found its tracklist more seamless to listen to in order! P.S. and ahh I'm also very excited about the new Olivia Rodrigo and Holly Humberstone albums that will drop in the coming months :D
