The thought just occurred to me that Belle-mere is 100% abandoned veteran representation. She was an active combat soldier for two years, nearly giving her life to serve the marines. She had an officer rank, and was a good, reliable fighter. Then she came back wounded, decided to retire and start a family, and got zero support. No pension, no nothing. She and the girls were poor to the point of starvation risk and Nami turned to stealing just to get one thing she liked. Arlong's price to let her and her daughters live was 200,000 beri, which sounds like a lot, but beri is closer to yen, basically worth less than a cent. Belle-mere had to give up her kids or her life over the lack of about $1,000, if that. And when she did die for it, she was buried in a pauper's grave and no one from the marines was even in contact enough to hear about it. Then when the marines do come? They accept Arlong's money. They never honor Belle-Mere's death or do anything to help her daughters. They dig up her tangerines and steal Nami's fortune when she's moments away from buying her freedom. Who knows if they ever even crossed her name out in their records? No freaking wonder Nami had no love for the marines despite her mom being one. They chewed Belle-mere up and spit her out.

Somehow never caught this before, but does this imply Birdperson’s mom killed his dad and he remembers seeing it?

The fact this memory is somehow tied to Blood Ridge in his mind makes me wonder if that’s part of why he didn’t accept Rick’s advances— maybe even subconsciously. If that’s what this implies, no wonder he had commitment issues. Makes the shit with Tammy hit differently, too…

I know it’s a throw away moment, but I really hope we get a follow up on that… Regardless of what that memory is, it’s dark shit.

The really wild one is Christmas in Fallujah which no one knows about because he didn't record it himself but it's the only time he actually wrote lyrics of his own accord after 1993. Turn the Lights Back On had Freddy Wexler involved and All My Life he wrote because the 23-year-old he married asked him to. He wouldn't have done those on his own. The fact that Christmas in Fallujah was recorded by a young, fairly unknown artist and is still super obscure just goes to show how much it was not about any kind of promotion, he just wrote it because he wanted to.
