genre | queer romance. status | first drafting complete !! vibes | italian countryside, penthouse, bondage bars, empty vodka bottles, drag queens, polyamory, your boyfriend's husband's really terrible band, learning to drive in a ferrari, jumping fences, a gasoline on a bonfire kind of love. in a fancy penthouse in bologna, sebastian silva hides away, jealous and scared of the world in equal measure. then his husband introduces him to a sweet, daring runaway, and the boy invites himself to roadtrip around europe with them for a month. a tender romance begins to blossom between them. sebastian is hesitant, but when his husband goes home, and the boy convinces him to travel a little longer, he is suddenly thrown head first into a love he can hardly keep up with. italy, to switzerland, to croatia, to greece: the boy has demons that haunt him no matter how far they run, and in the middle of the mediterranean with a long stretch of road and no distractions, sebastian realises that he does too. can they face their demons before the road runs out, or will their love crumble and leave them alone once again?

aawiab is 100% a roadtrip story now and i am so so in love with it. i loved the first draft but this is a million times better and i actually don't know how i'm going to write it without just crying every other scene just from how much love and fondness i have for these characters and their silly little story. i already think about it and feel my heart get all big. like what do you mean they're going to travel all around europe together and adopt a stray dog together and lay out on a mountain and watch the stars together and and and,, tacky tourist hoodies and swimming in lakes and deep conversations against an endless stretch of road and screaming at each other during a yacht party and the dog did i mention the dog.

ugh.

Happy Storyteller Saturday! An Angel Walks into a Bar involves a European roadtrip, have you visited all these countries? if not, what inspires you to write about them?

i have sort of been to a couple of them - but mostly nope! i am hoping to have enough money to see italy before i finish writing aawiab.

the inspiration for the european roadtrip was mostly just that it made the most sense for the characters. sebastian lives in italy (because i'm learning italian) and i know a lot about ancient greece (sebastian would too) and i wanted a roadtrip, so if they're starting in italy then a roadtrip around northern italy through to greece just made the most sense.

i spend an awful lot of time talking about aawiab in terms of angels and demons. entierly metaphorical angels and demons. i mean it's even in the title of the book. and while the angels and demons are just emotional metaphors i really do think it would be one hell of an au. at the very least, caspar would make a delightful fallen angel. i could see sebastian as either a very weary human or a much older fallen angel who has sort of just made the best of it but is still very much haunted by the trauma of it all. maybe they band together to save the world or something, i have no idea, but it would be cute.

i am like physically upset because i think in aawiab sebastian and caspar go on a two week roadtrip through italy and switzerland and they hike mountains and ski and surf and talk and get to know one another so so deeply and caspar gets so wrapped up in this fantasy of travelling and being loved and then sebastian tells him they have to go home and it actually kind of breaks his heart. the highs are so high and the lows are so low with these two and i am sad about it.

so an angel walks into a bar is part of both the broader casparverse as a whole but also a smaller series that is currently three books but i reckon will be four books when all is said and done.

aawiab has been first drafted, so now i'm planning out the prequel and sequel. and the thing is. both of those books are SO silly. one is like 'a bunch of students think they invented polyamory' and the other is 'why the fuck are my husband and your best friend parent-trapping us into getting back together?'

and then aawiab is like. addiction. bdsm. unhealthy obsession. doomed by the narrative. harrowing ending.

it is SO out of place and i'm not even going to do anything about it. i'm calling it an artistic choice. it is what it is.

sebastian is such a fun character to write bc he's secret trans and autism rep but you wouldn't know unless you know.

don't get me wrong, it'll all be explicit in the sequel, but in this book you would have no idea if you didn't already know, there's just a lot of little hints that seem obvious in retrospect but are just mildly confusing at the time.

the most fun is that he seems like the sterotypical controlling dominant type, but he isn't, and it's a really fun twist on that trope to be like ahahaha he needs to control everything? well that would be the autism tyvm.

he both amuses and delights and i love him very much.

okay the thing with the final act of this book is that caspar is kinda just the worst. and i love that boy. with my whole entire heart. but oh my god bro please get ur shit together.

the problem with caspar is that he's a trainwreck you don't see coming. one minute he's this smooth charming sweetheart who makes you feel warm and special, and the next he's threatening to kill himself on christmas out of nowhere and you're left wondering how the fuck you never saw that coming.
