Soooooo @onyxonline 's SpaceRider AU has me in a vice grip like many other people. TIME TO JOIN THE WAGON FR. Finished this mofo yesterday only to see him today and redo the whole thing. Meet this universe's version of my OC Aaron :') He's an Orca whale hence why he's big. His birthhome is the moon Europa but he currently resides on earth with a human friend :'D While he's not a rider or a villian he still runs into his fair share of encounters with the law because my guy here is crazy about historical ruins. Especially the ones that are supposed to be off-limits, the less information there is or the stricter security is around the area the more Aaron's interest is peaked. That can sometimes lead to... awkward situations. It's not uncommon for him to trespass certain areas only to get chased around the catacombs by security. But hey ruins and dead/lost languages are his favourite thing in the universe and so far there wasn't a place he didn't manage to sneak in and out of... yet. As of how he gets from place to place to visit these ruins in the first place.. this is what his human friend is for, they have ways to get him there.
Don't let the size intimidate you though.. his height is all he's got going for him he's a pushover. He'd cave under a simple look of disappointment. He's a good bean, I swear.

Listen. LISTEN. Whales are HUGE and UNCONCERNED, which clearly implies BIDDING THEIR TIME. In this essay Aaron will--
Aaron Fox'sTongue by @muffinlance character of all time. He's an ex-ish assassin thief and a master of scheming who just sorta accidentally fell into pretending to be a spy-in-training for people who would have killed him on-sight. His bright idea to get himself some leeway for this ruse was to pretend to be someone who is pretending to be him. He kills both animals and humans with the same sort of value. He is so against cannibalism that he won't eat any meat of any kind. He is a strict vegeterian who won't even eat meat to keep his cover from being blown. He was so food insecure before that he stows food away in his pockets Just In Case. When he was trapped as a wolf for several weeks, he practiced barking in a way that sounded exactly like the word "woof" just to mess with people. One of his favorite pastimes is antagonizing a specific member of the Royal Guard and sometimes he doesn't even do it intentionally. He doesn't listen to dead men but that just means he'll kill anyone he wants to stop listening to. He was late to his own death so now he has an ability that lets him know if someone is scheduled to die within the next one-to-one-hundred business days. He wanted to kill a woman so bad that it got in the way of someone else's assassination attempt. He has killed so many people but he can't just let a stranger die for no reason. He catches feelings of friendship towards anyone who doesn't try to kill him after a handful of conversations, with very few exceptions. He doesn't trust anyone completely, and won't even let the 3rd person limited narrator tell the readers parts of his plans until they become relevant. He is so Ace that he overlooked a major development that kinda led to the downfall of a kingdom. The reason he was in a position to accidentally kind of topple a kingdom in the first place was because he kind of accidentally toppled the kingdom he was raised in by on-purpose killing its king. He willingly and knowingly wears cloaks that he considers to be equivalent to human skin. He spent half the Spring stealing specific "human skin" cloaks so that the people whose culture those skinned people belonged to could give them a proper funeral and so that their leader would trust him. Some of his best friends are animals. Some of his worst enemies too. He isn't keen on horses and he doesn't trust whales. He is extremely intelligent. He just learned how to write his own name two weeks ago and he still can't read calligraphy. His dead brother was supposed to be the Saviour of Humanity.

Since I'm super deep into the maurauders fandom atm but have also just read aftg here are my opinions on wich aftg chracter has wich patronus 🤌✨:
Neil Josten: Falcon - Falcons have a keen eye and are among the fastest creatures on earth. If your Patronus is a falcon, you may have been a troubled soul who decided to cast away their old, evil habits to fly down the hard, right path. Your nature pulls you to the dark, but you’ve chosen to live for the light - The falcon also represents breaking free from slavery. Now that you are free, you are flying in the light, and no one can stop you, not even Dementors!
Andrew Minyard: Hippogriff - The hippogriff is a proud and dangerous creature. They are half eagle, half horse, the offspring of a horse and griffin. If your Patronus is a hippogriff, you likely have a demeanor that commands respect or else. You’ve been known to fiercely defend those you’re loyal to and lash out at those who don’t earn your respect. At the same time, you are capable of growing to love former enemies - after a bloody battle.
Kevin Day: Heron - The heron is known for its outstanding determination and intelligence. Herons live in three elements: water, earth, and air, revealing that the animal appreciates diversity. You have a mind like no other and work on whatever you’re working on until you’ve finished it.
Nicky Hemmick: Hedgehog - Cute and loveable inside and out, those who possess a hedgehog Patronus may thrive on giving and receiving love and may feel they need more of it than others realize. While upfront about their endearment and affectionate personality, hedgehogs are also known to be anxious and overly cautious. They often worry about their own and others of their kind’s safety. Those around must approach the hedgehog with care and precision, though, because when defensive and hurt, hedgehogs are remembered not for their sweetness, but for their sharp spikes.
Renee Walker: Adder - The common European adder or common European viper is a venomous snake that can be found throughout Europe. Adders are not normally aggressive and tend to only bite when they are threatened in some way.
Dan Wilds: Orca - It’s no mistake that orcas are nicknamed “killer whales.” They are one of the most effective hunters in the ocean. Orcas use teamwork and complex communication skills to hunt and the same cunning to protect their young. With the fierce, calculated protection of an orca on your side, you can rest assured that the Dementors will be no match for you.
Matt Boyd: Black Bear - The formidable form of the black bear is often enough to scare away even the bravest of explorers, not to mention Dementors! Often mistaken as a deadly predator, the black bear mostly feasts on berries, grasses, and roots complemented with fish and carrion. This is often how people see you - a fierce opponent who will protect yourself and those close to you but who has a softer side hidden away from the world. Black bears are known for their adaptability, and this is often seen in how resourceful you can be. No matter the situation you find yourself in, when you come to call upon your Patronus, the black bear will be fully prepared to fight in your corner.
Allison Reynolds: Peacock - Peacocks are ground-dwelling birds known for their beautiful eye-shaped plumage. These birds extend their feathers not only to attract mates but more importantly, to appear more intimidating to predators. With feathers that make up over 60% of their total length, it gets the job done. Peacocks are easily irritated and would make a fierce and gorgeous Patronus.
Aaron Minyard: Lynx - The lynx is a solitary wild cat. They hunt alone, using their great sense of hearing and their stealth to move through the forests without being seen by either their prey or those who may be watching. When they do strike, they are fast enough to even catch snowshoe hares. Dementors won’t know what hit them!

okay this might be a really weird question, but in Into The Deep, does the cousins' cave have like bedrooms for each of them or are they just subjected to one another 24/7? (you don't have to answer! i just was thinking about it!) - @stabbyfoxandrew
Sort of, yes! There's actually a pretty extensive series of small caves and connective tunnels along the back wall of the tank. Wymack had it constructed that way so as to provide some semblance of privacy to the mers, as well as giving them a place to sleep that would feel safest for them.
In the wild, merfolk pods frequently sleep in shipwrecks, underwater caves or shelter in reefs for safety, as their biggest predators are orcas and some larger species of sharks (mainly great whites and bull sharks). Dolphins can also occasionally pose a threat to baby merlings, despite the fact that they will also sometimes cooperate with merfolk for hunting purposes.
If shelter isn't available, mated pairs and/or families will usually sleep with their tails wrapped around one another, so they don't float away in the current (it's also just for comfort and closeness, like their version of cuddling, so sometimes they'll do it just for that).
As for Nicky, Aaron and Andrew - Nicky and Aaron frequently sleep near each other, often in the same cave (though there is enough space for them to spread out and have their own, which they sometimes do).
Andrew has his own separate cave though - he has trouble sleeping through the night, as well as night terrors. He's accidentally woken Nicky and Aaron both up many times, and eventually decided it was just easier to sleep separately from them (though there are occassions where Aaron wakes up from his own nightmares and comes to sleep next to Andrew anyway.)

PERSONALITY
MBTI type – ISTJ-A; Introverted, observant, thinking, judging, assertive.
Orca is a natural leader despite her introversion. She commands attention, even from those who aren't willing to follow her, unafraid to put such people in their place with harsh words and biting insults. Her introversion leans more to the ambivert side of things, she prefers the quiet of solitude over a loud social function, but socialising is not out of her comfort zone, and she would never be afraid to speak up and voice her opinions.
The ends always justify the means to Orca. She is willing to do risky, and sometimes deplorable, things to complete her objective, leaving some to question her morality, but those close to her trust that she knows where to draw the line. She's self-assured, confident to the point of cockiness at times, because she's good and she knows it.
The opinions of others mean very little to her, with the exception of the few people she calls her friends – she cares deeply for those select few. It takes a lot for her to trust, and a lot more to consider someone a friend, but once you've proved yourself, her loyalty is fierce. It’s incredibly difficult, but not impossible, to lose her faith.
Even when she was in the Navy, Orca has never been a fan of authority. It takes effort to earn her respect, which many of her commanding officers never did. In a way, this makes her slightly hypocritical, seeing as she demands respect from those around her but doesn't give it so easily.
Although she appears to be a serious, no-nonsense Captain, under the stony facade Orca actually has a strong sense of humour. She's more than willing to indulge in the jokes her soldiers throw around, but she still reserves the ability to take things seriously when the need arises.
FUN FACTS
Orca learned to play the drums as a way to de-stress. She learned in bootcamp from one of the older kids, and kept it up when she could in the Navy.
Her biggest pet peeve is stupid questions. She’s been known to make people run laps until the sun goes down for not using common sense.
The streaks in her hair are due to a bout of Alopecia Areata that she suffered from for most of her childhood, likely stress induced, and when the patches of hair grew back, they were white. She also has a patch of white where her neck meets her skull, but she keeps that one hidden because she doesn’t think it's as cool as the other two.
Her hair is also the reason for her callsign, since it looks vaguely like the markings on a killer whale, especially when she wears it up.
Her favourite colour is red.
She owns an ungodly amount of orca plushies.
On a similar note, she also owns an ungodly amount of model figures of fighter jets.
She’s obsessed with Top Gun. Like, balls to the wall fucking insane about it.
Like, she references it daily.
Yes, it was the reason she joined the navy. She is not immune to propaganda
Orca actually attended the real TOPGUN in Nevada in 2000, and graduated top of her class.
In 2016, she bought a decommissioned F-22 Raptor thanks to an Admiral friend of hers, and has been slowly refurbishing it in her off time. She keeps it in hangar two, and nobody else is even allowed to go in there.
She does all the repairs to the OSODs aircrafts herself.

BACKGROUND
Ryan's fate was decided before she was even born.
Her mother, Alison, was known to carry the gene for a genetic disorder and as a result, when she was pregnant with Ryan, she opted for a genetic screening to see if it would be passed down to her. It wasn't, but it's thanks to this genetic screening that they found out Ryan carried the NLH gene – the enhanced gene.
From the moment she was born, it seemed that her parents had already given up on her. Neglectful would be an understatement, there was no love in the way they cared for her. It was nothing but a chore to them, having to raise their mutant child when all they wanted was a normal baby.
Her father died when she was five. Shipped out to Iraq in ‘83 and never came back. Her mother shut down after that.
Growing up was difficult. Rockland was a small enough town that most, if not all, of the inhabitants knew about the fact that she was enhanced. She spent the majority of her childhood alone, being avoided by her peers and ignored by her mother, and becoming more and more bitter as the years went by.
She was eight when she finally discovered what her enhancement was; the ability to walk on water. It's a cruel joke, that she never even had a fleeting chance at a normal life because of something so insignificant.
When Ryan was eleven, her half-brother Aaron was born, and she got to witness firsthand what it looks like when someone loves you. Her mother was a completely different person once she brought him home, smiling and cooing adoringly at her infant brother. The resentment for both of them would never leave her.
Enhanced individuals, as the official paperwork refers to them, are required to serve in the military whether they like it or not. Mandatory service, starting at sixteen, and ending when you die. There is no choice, not for those who are deemed sub-human because of a genetic mutation completely out of anyone's control.
Despite the unfairness of it all, Ryan was shipped off to bootcamp a few months after her thirteenth birthday. It was easier there, surprisingly; there were other enhanced kids – people like her, for the first time in her life – and the structure and regiment of it all was something she actually found herself enjoying. The one aspect she struggled with was the demanding authority. She has never been with being told what to to, being a follower, especially by people she has no reason to respect apart from their rank. Her commanding officers were just like every other adult that had failed her thus far, and she earned more than a few disciplinaries for the insubordination of her outbursts of anger.
The three years she spent there helped Ryan for some sense of identity. It was strange, and bittersweet in a way, but she thrived in the military – had she not been conscripted, she may have even joined of her own accord.
The only sense of choice people like Ryan are given is the liberty of choosing which branch of the military they go to, so when she finally reached her sixteenth birthday in the March of ‘94, Ryan picked the Navy. She was on the plane to California the next day.
Once again, her entire life and any sense of structure she had was thrown to the wind. The Navy was harder, she was alone again and this time she had no idea if she was the only one of her kind; outing herself as enhanced didn’t seem like the best idea, especially since being a woman already put a target on her head. They looked down on her, endlessly questioned her abilities with an arrogance that made her blood boil, but Ryan was determined. She would be an aviator, and she’d be leagues better than all the people who thought they were above her – no amount of discouragement from them could change her mind.
It was in the academy that she met her first true friend, Michael ‘Berlin’ Addams. He was Ryan’s wingman, her partner in the skies, and the only person in her life to accept her unconditionally and without question. From the moment they met it was like two puzzle pieces clicking into place, his easygoing and humorous nature was the complete opposite of Orca’s quick temper, but they worked incredibly together like two sides of the same coin.
After Orca and Berlin graduated from the academy, placed first and fourth respectively, the two of them quickly rose through the ranks together, thanks to their raw talent for aviation as well as the synergy they had. They were best friends, practically inseparable, and though there were others they got along with, no one else came close to the bond that they had. For the longest time it was just the two of them, but the incident of March 1999 changed that.
While offshore on a deployment, someone found out Orca was enhanced, and word spread around the aircraft carrier faster than she could’ve imagined. She lashed out, broke another pilot's nose, and had to mop the floors for two months as punishment. While she was cleaning she was approached by one of the sailors, Eric Reyton she would come to learn. He extended an olive branch, and almost got his head bitten off before he revealed that he was enhanced too. It was a relief, learning that she wasn’t the only one, she finally had someone who really understood again. Berlin did his best, but he would never truly know what it was like.
From then on, it was the three of them. Orca, Berlin, and Eric – Static, as they took to calling him – and for the first time she actually started to feel like she belonged. The boys were like brothers to her, the family she never had, and life finally felt like it was looking up after all those long, lonely years.
And then Berlin died.
Shot down over land while they were on assignment. He didn't even have time to eject before he hit the ground.
Orca thought she knew pain. Unloved by her own mother, alone for the first sixteen years of her life, rejected by almost everyone she'd ever met, none of it had been easy; but as she watched Berlin's plane disappear into the treeline, nothing could've prepared her for the agony that ripped through her chest.
The rest felt like an out of body experience. She ejected, sparing not a single though for her own plane as it went down too. The landing fractured her ankle but she ran anyway, through the forest towards the blaze. She clambered up the wing of his aircraft, ripping the cockpit open and paying no mind to the way the searing metal burned through her flight suit and then her skin.
She pulled his body from the wreck, collapsing onto the ground with his lifeless body cradled in her arms. That's how the evac team found her, hours later, still sobbing into his cold skin.
His body went back to his family in New Jersey, but Orca kept his tags. She stayed standing over his coffin for hours after everyone else had left, everyone but Eric. Nobody was closer to Berlin than they were. Nobody understood the gaping hole his death left behind.
They were approached, after night had fallen and they were on their way out of the graveyard. The stranger handed Orca a card and introduced herself – Colonel Ellis – telling her to call when they needed a change of scenery. Eric had to restrain her from clawing the Colonel's eyes out for her audacity.
After the funeral, Orca finally understood how her mother felt when her dad didn't come home. There was nothing that could help the pain, the anguish of losing her best friend, so she drank herself into blackout numbness to escape it. Eric tried to help her, but it only ended in her lashing out. It went on like that for months, the only time she wasn't wasted was on the aircraft carrier where she had no choice. In a desperate attempt to help his friend, Eric ended up calling the Colonel to get them both out of California.
They found out on the flight to Texas that the Colonel was starting a PMC solely for the enhanced. The 'Occult Special Operations Division', she called it, a counter-terrorism taskforce. At first Orca was sceptical, the idea of it seemed almost too good to be true, but Colonel Ellis's achievements spoke for themselves. She was a decorated officer, and there was no doubt she had the power and resources to create something like this.
For a year, Orca and Eric served under Colonel Ellis in the OSOD, along with Lieutenant Klaus Green, Corporal Badger, both marines, and Lieutenant Nina ‘Vulture’ Smith, an Air Force pilot and all soldiers Ellis had worked with for a long time. It was better, being surrounded by people like them, and the freedom they had now was infinitely better than what they had in the Navy, but they were still out of their element. While Ellis, Green, Badger were marines and had decades of experience with active combat and its many intricacies, Orca and Eric were just a pilot and a sailor. Still though, Ellis didn't give up on them. They learned surprisingly fast under her mentorship, picking up what she taught them with ease, and though they were still miles behind the marines, their skills were impressive.
In 2011, Ellis was arrested.
The NLH gene is a random mutation, not something that can be isolated and cut out like a genetic disorder. However, if at least one parent carries the NLH gene, then the offspring are guaranteed to be enhanced as well. Starting in the 70s, sterilisation became mandatory for the enhanced, the same as conscription, as another way to control the enhanced population. Colonel Ellis was born in the late 50s, and conscripted in the 60s; in other words, she evaded sterilisation.
It came out that she had a daughter, around Orca's age, and action was taken almost immediately. Colonel Ezikiel Ellis died two months after her incarceration. The details of her death were never released.
Her death was different. It was obvious foul play was involved, but Ellis's death didn't affect her the same way Berlin's devastated her. This time, she got the feeling Ellis had reached her time, that she'd accomplished what she set out to do in her life, and now it was Orca’s duty to carry on her legacy.
She took over the OSOD as Captain as soon as Ellis's death was publicised. Now down to just the three of them, it seemed like a logical course of action to find some new recruits, and it didn't take long to find some. Ellis's daughter, Sergeant Major Arctic, came to Orca shortly after she took over the OSOD, but despite it being her mother's creation, she showed no interest in taking Orca's place. She agreed to work alongside the OSOD, but remained a free agent.
In the same year, they met Sergeants Eastwood and Vantage, marines like Ellis and Green, and most importantly, both enhanced. They were by far the best of their unit and then some, with expertise between them from insertions to engineering. She hired them on the spot.
Orca got the scar in 2012. A mission gone south, an attempt to save a group of hostages, and a crack shot from the enemy. She took a bullet to the face. If she wasn't enhanced, there was no way she would've made it. As luck would have it, if you could call it that, a doctor was among the hostages, and saved Orca's life that night – Honey Rosenheim, an enhanced combat medic who would work with the OSOD for years to come after their unfortunate first encounter.

It's 2019 by the time Orca meets Captain Price, through Kate Laswell and, surprisingly, their mutual friend, Nikolai. To say he didn't make a good first impression would be an understatement. Perhaps it's because of Orca's natural hostility and standoffish nature, but the two Captains butted heads constantly. Eventually he realised – with gentle nudging from Eric and the lieutenants – that she wasn't just an asshole for the sake of it, and she was actually a proficient leader. She slowly warmed up to him once she didn't have to fight for his respect.
Since the mission in 2018, the OSOD has collaborated with Captain Price, and subsequently Task Force 141, on multiple occasions.
It took significant work, but Orca was an accomplished Captain, with loyal soldiers and the ability to actually make a difference in the world. Her fate may have been decided before she was born, but Ryan is the one who made something for herself. She still has Berlin's picture hanging up in her office.

Welcome to my place, any similarities with an asylum are pure coincidence.

I'm Miss Nobody, a 32 years old person who loves creating, sharing and read about original characters, with a strong preference for fan characters. English is not my first language and I am far from having a perfect grammar, I feel like this is important information considering that I write a lot about my characters. I consider myself a non-binary person and I feel comfortable with any pronouns.
⚠️ This blog may contain mature content occasionally and while never visually explicit I still feel like this deserves a warning, especially if you don't like cussing, I cuss a lot! Proceed with caution, you have been warned.⚠️

✎ My characters ✎
I have lots of original characters, from original stories to fandoms, all of my humanoids are fan characters, while all of my ferals are from my original story called "Cursed Scars".

Important notes:
• No DNI as I find these very useless, at most they will make you an easy target for suspicious people.
• I do not answer private messages, these make me extremely uncomfortable as I suffer from social anxiety.
• I don't draw often as drawing makes my mental health decline a lot, I don't consider myself an artist, I draw very occasionally only.
• Some of my fan fics and original stories have very sensitive topics, it does NOT mean that I am okay or support any of these in real life, I'm not a murderer for writing about a murderer.
• I don't support or tolerate any kind of bullying or harassment over fictional ships, I couldn't care less if you ship the opposite of what I ship, you are free to and no one should be treated like shit for that, I have zero tolerance for this kind of behavior and I'd probably kick your face if I could. I ship Levihan but I ain't getting mad at Eruri, it's that simple, thank you.

Bruh I was having a blast making this, have some more LOOOOOOORE!

Being underwater the entirety or most of the entirety of their lives makes actually talking with words kind of redundant.
When Aaron got to earth learning to actually speak was really hard for him but he was super interested. Mella on the other hand was super hype about learning his 'ocean tune'. Thanks to that she can now sing melodies without sounding like a dying crow gargling on nails!

Aaron from Emily Windsnap. Another semi-mer just like Emily, and in various outfits. Given how he’s described at times with the colors “black” and “white”, I partly based his color scheme on polar animals. In particular penguins and orcas. This is kinda a warmup for #Mermay. Enjoy!

INTERVIEW with Stephen Near of Same Boat Theatre and the limited run of the award-winning play WHALE FALL
Tumblr media
Same Boat Theatre's Whale Fall is a one-act drama about the extinction of Canada’s southern resident orca population and the journey of one woman to find the last remaining whale while struggling to hold on to the memories of her father. Part coming-of-age story and part fable for the era of climate change, Whale Fall is an intimate duet between two characters as they navigate the painful waters of family, memory and species extinction. Written by Stephen Near (SN) and directed by Aaron Joel Craig, the show has received critical praise in both Hamilton and Vancouver and now, the show returns to Hamilton once more for a limited run before heading to Toronto.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Stephen and he shared several personal reflections of the show’s success at the Vancouver Fringe Festival and what plans the company has for Whale Fall in the future....
What inspired your company to take Whale Fall to the Vancouver Fringe Festival this past summer?
SN: Well, the play takes place on the West coast, and starts off with the main character in Vancouver and then making her way up the coast. And, if any animal is emblematic of Vancouver, it’s the orca. They’re a regular sight for whale watching tours in the Georgia Strait not to mention holding special significance for the Indigenous people of the West coast. So, as a play that directly tackles the issues of species extinction and climate change through the story of the orca, Vancouver felt like a natural fit. Even when we were rehearsing the play last year, we talked about showing it out West. And, to be fair, we did apply to a number of other Fringes this past year including Toronto and Edmonton but they didn’t materialize. Vancouver was our one and only draw so it felt a bit like we were destined to show the piece out West.
2. How would you compare Vancouver's Fringe Festival experience to the Hamilton Fringe Festival experience?
SN: When we first performed Whale Fall at Hamilton Fringe, we were coming out of the pandemic with a brand-new script which we’d never tried in front of an audience. For Aaron and I, it was also our first time working with Stephanie Hope Lawlor and Ray Louter as actors in a really personal play. The success of the play in Hamilton took us a bit by surprise. Not because we had doubts in the material or the performers, but that the audience would react to it so positively and strongly. Our houses and the reviews reflected that. In Vancouver, we didn’t have a built-in audience. We had the accolades from the show but we were facing a much larger festival (80+ shows) and an unfamiliar community.
It felt a bit overwhelming but, at the same time, we lucked out in our venue. Aaron and Ray knew some of the people at the Pacific Theatre and that allowed us a bit of reassurance when the show first hit the stage. We managed to catch a few shows outside of our performances but a lot of our downtime was spent keeping ourselves focused away from home and experiencing Vancouver as a company. It was an amazing experience, and one which has strengthened us as a company.
3. Did Whale Fall resonate differently with the Vancouver audience due to the show’s subject matter? If so, how?
SN: It certainly hit a lot of audiences harder. There were several viewers who came out of the performance weeping and others who met me after the show or subsequent Fringe line-ups who really had a strong reaction to the piece. But, perhaps, what made the biggest impression were the stories people told me both post-show and in Fringe line-ups when I was handing out postcards. Many audience members told me of their own close encounters with orca or whales, in general. Some older viewers were also involved in the environmental movement that started in BC in the 70s and 80s and connected with the play on that level.
By and large, though, I think the themes of searching for hope and coming to terms with loss resonated in many of the same ways as they did with Hamilton audiences which perhaps points to why this play has such universal appeal
4. How has the production changed since its initial staging in 2022? What have been some highlights and challenges in reworking aspects of the show?
SN: The script has changed in some significant ways although the overall theme and story have not. We are still following Becca’s journey to find the last remaining orca. We are still reliving moments between her and her father, Steven. But I did write additional scenes and refine existing ones especially where they concerned Becca’s past conversations with her dad. We touch on a lot more specific moments that helped to clarify her journey in the present. And we also changed the ending. A bit. That was a magical moment in rehearsal when we all sat down, knew our original ending wasn’t hitting the way we wanted it to and hammered out something new.
Revisiting and reworking scripts post-first run is actually my favourite part of the playwriting process and I know we all enjoyed diving back into the play after a year away from it. At the same time, the challenge always comes when you revisit a piece. You ask questions of the material and the characters and the answers aren’t always easy to find. I mean, Aaron, Stephanie and Ray all continued to probe the characters and their motivations even after the script was largely nailed down. For me, that’s when you find the real gems hidden within a script.
5. Whale Fall will enjoy a limited Hamilton return at the Hamilton Conservatory of the Arts later this month. What influenced this decision and what’s next for the production (or Same Boat Theatre in general)?
SN: After the HCA Performing Arts Sunday Series, Whale Fall will premiere at Toronto’s Red Sandcastle Theatre. Located in the city’s east end theatre district, Red Sandcastle is home to Eldritch Theatre and is Toronto’s longest operating ‘storefront’ theatre and we’re really excited for the chance to show it there. The desire to bring the show to Toronto really came out of mine and Aaron’s desire to expand the reach and the audiences of Same Boat. As for Red Sandcastle, I know the owners really well. They took the theatre over during COVID and have really opened up the space as an alternative theatre venue so we wanted to support them.
As for what’s next for Same Boat, well, Aaron and myself have a lot of things we’re cooking. And, when we were in Vancouver, we had a chance to collaborate with Stephanie and Ray on some of those plans. I can’t speak to specifics but there’s lots more to come. The success of Whale Fall, both here and in Vancouver, as well as the fact that we’re coming up on our 10th anniversary has really given Aaron and I the confidence to take the company in some bold new directions. The fact is that we’ve been creating new theatre together in this city for over a decade. We push each other professionally and creatively while being dedicated to keeping the company moving forward. Our company is a Hamilton success story… and the story’s not done.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The journey of Whale Fall continues on for Same Boat Theatre and I am very excited that the production will continue to deliver some very beautiful and tragic insights into how climate change affects more than what the eye can see. In my Hamilton Fringe review, I referred to the show as "harrowing" and "poetry in motion." I stand by these statements and hope Hamilton and Toronto audiences resonate with this show and with the fascinating original work Same Boat Theatre provides.
