(I don't know what else to call it, that is literally the caption for the video T_T)

TDP finally posted the clip from s6e1 where Aaravos sobs into the water, so let's analyze it!!

The first thing I want to point out is the reflection symbolism and ripples symbolism. In Ripples (the short story), we get the following line:

In other words, ripples ruin the reflection of the stars. (Tangentially related, but we have also seen many occasions of Aaravos himself ruining reflections, which I've written about here). However, in this scene, we first have view of the water, and the tears hitting the water. Aaravos then appears on the screen, first as a reflection that is blurred by the ripples created by his tears. The camera only pans up to the reflection's caster later in the scene.

AKA, the ripples are CREATING the reflection of a star.

I also love the way that he looks at his reflection, and then looks away towards the stars when he finds that he's not glowing. It appears to me to be a mix of guilt and anguish. The fact that he can't bear to look at his own reflection and looks to the stars instead is... interesting.

Another thing that I think is worth pointing out in this clip is the Rayllum parallels with Aaravos and the Merciful One. This scene is so similar to the scene in The Midnight Desert when Rayla was self deprecating and looking at the water, and Callum was telling her to shut up.

Rayla and Aaravos are both crying into their reflections, and Callum and The Merciful One are trying to pull them out of it. We don't have much info on what is going on in the new scene, but to me it seems to be around the time of the formation of the Sea of Castout/when Aaravos lost his powers. So, in this case, Rayla and Aaravos are both learning that they are "ghosted" or "cast out"--pretty much, exiled from their community. Callum and The Merciful One are both shocking them out of the tears. (I do think Callum was more effective than The Merciful One's weird cryptic words, though ;)).

I'm so excited for this season! The imagery and visual motifs are already excellent, can't wait to see what else season 6 brings!!

The most emotionally impactful parts of season 6 to me are as follows:

(In no particular order)

1. Viren deserting Claudia (ouch)

2. Callum having to use love to cast a spell to bring back Runaan the person who killed his second father.

3. Claudia and Callum casting the same spell at the same time in the last episode.

4. Queen Janai and Karim both giving practically identical speeches to their armies.

5. Practically everything Soren

5 b. Specifically Viren telling Soren he's proud of him which is all Soren wanted to hear in season 1 but now he doesn't want to believe anything his father says.

6. Callum's inner truth being Rayla.

7. Callum's dad died of a lung disease and when Callum was trying to learn the sky Arcanum his mom had to tell him to breathe because he was hyperventilating and then his most iconic spell for a while was aspiro which is a spell that empowers his breath

8. Viren sacrificing himself to save Katolis and Claudia being too late to see him again but Soren was there to see his father redeem himself.

9. Cosmo and Astrid seeing eachother for the first time.

10. Aaravos, a father who just wanted to protect his daughter being a mirror to Viren being a father who wants to protect his son and daughter.

There were so many impactful moments this season and many of them couldn't have happened without the setup in seasons prior, I am probably forgetting some because I'm just doing this off the top of my head.

Is Destiny a book you write yourself?

In S2 of The Dragon Prince we get Callum's iconic line, and in S5, a version of it appears in Viren's dark magic induced dream as well.

Both Callum and young Viren say that they get to make their own choices. Their own decisions.

But what if... they don't?

We meet again. Only this time, here I am on the other side. The path of fate is already chosen. Every step I took, I took because I had to.

This is what Viren says when he first sees the mirror in the dream sequence. Initially, I thought this was a reference to how he is now the one becoming trapped, not Aaravos. But that isn't the case.

Because he's not talking about the mirror; he's talking to the mirror. And the person on the other side. Teenage Viren, from the first time that he used Dark Magic. (I believe that this was confirmed by the writers of the show but don't quote me on that).

Years ago, as a teenager, Viren used dark magic for the first time. And he saw, in his vision, an older and corrupted version of himself. This older version of himself warned him of what was to come and told him that his fate was already decided. That every step he took, he took because he had to.

It's very similar to the conversation that Callum has with "Other Callum" in his dark magic dream. And crucially, Young Viren has a similar response to the one Callum had. He says that

No matter where you are on the path, no matter what you’ve done before, every step forward is a choice.

He rebels against this idea. He says his version of "Destiny is a book you write yourself". And yet... decades later he finds himself precisely where he was told he would end up.

Viren rebelled against the concept of Destiny, and yet, he ended up right where he was told he would.

And this raises the question; if Viren saw his future when he was a teenager, and it came true, then was it more than a vision? Was his destiny already written?

And so... is destiny actually a book you write yourself, or do you have no choice in the steps you take down the chosen path of fate?

Oh thank you so much for asking, I could talk about each of these episodes forever!

I know the early episodes aren't the most popular, but Echoes of Thunder remains my all-time favorite. I just love the vibe of it and the way it sets up the characters: Rayla sparing Marcos and having to save face with Runaan, how clearly Callum and Ezra love each other and Harrow, and even Callum and Soren. When Soren realized Callum was trying to impress Claudia with his swordsmanship, I was so ready for him to be a jerk about it, but instead he was like "don't worry, I'll help" and I immediately knew the show had hooked me

Speaking of fantastic early episodes, Moonrise is another one of my favorites because it lays out the stakes so well. That battle between Rayla and Runaan? Finale-worthy stuff and it was the third episode of the series. Callum calling Harrow "dad"? Still makes my chest hurt. Plus I love how ride-or-die Rayla becomes for the boys like fifteen minutes after trying to kill them

There wasn't a single sentence of Harrow's letter in Heart of a Titan that didn't blow me away. I also really love how everything came together in the end, with Harrow telling Callum about Sarai's death the same way Callum tried to tell Ezran about Harrow's and Aanya's absolutely iconic speech. Also the key of Aaravos reveal. It was so much in such a short time

Breathe is an absolute masterpiece and I will not be taking notes. Rayla almost confessing to Callum, the music that played when Callum figured out the sky arcanum, the exposition on Claudia's and Soren's mom, the way the two of their arcs developed and how that contrasted with Callum's and Ezran's development... life-changing stuff. I also really love Sarai's speech to Callum in his dream. I still say it to myself sometimes when I'm especially anxious

Finnegrin's Wake, obviously. It's such a good episode for everyone involved. The rayllum is top-tier, of course, but I also love how it showcased the strength of the friendship between the (extended) dragaang, and it had some standout individual character moments like Soren helping Deadwood and Callum's epic speech about the ocean arcanum
