I know they say Beast Atsushi was referred to as Number 78 because the orphanage assigned each kid a number to keep track of them.
But it feels so much more than that considering there’s only 2 other characters who’ve been referred to as numbers.
Paul Verlaine as Black Number 12.
Chuuya Nakahara as A-258 (experiment number) and A5158 (ability code.)
Both of them got those numbers (well not the second one for Chuuya) from being government experiments. And in Verlaine’s case also from acting as one of there spies.
Stands to reason Beast Atsushi would get his number from something similar.
It could’ve been from Beast Shibusawa but considering the lengths the Beast version of the Headmaster went to hide all evidence of this man.
I mean he threw his body in the river and burned all his research. So I don’t think he’d continue using an alias that the man gave Beast Atsushi. And well it’s not like the Headmaster didn’t know Beast Atsushi’s name.
Could’ve been from something else, perhaps those Werecreature experiments we hear about Fukuchi eliminating. They say he killed hundreds and thousands but never say he killed them all.
And he presumably was still working with Fyodor if the 37 year burden is anything to go by. And Fyodor definitely wants Atsushi alive.
And yeah that’s Bsd and Number 78 comes from Bsd Beast but I can see it popping up in the main series. From what we’ve seen and know of Atsushi’s past it’s very similar to what we know of Beast Atsushi’s past.
Even down to the hammer incident, it’s word for word the same thing going on in both worlds.
Details like this also seem to crossover, in some ways exactly the same such as Beast Kyouka being called the 35 killer. But also in taking those events and flipping them around.
Both Kyouka’s try to leave the Port Mafia. In Bsd she manages to leave because of Atsushi and in Bsd Beast she stays because of Beast Atsushi.
As well as Bsd Atsushi being nicknamed the Man Eating Tiger and than in Bsd Beast, Beast Atsushi’s first appearance is as a tiger with a man in his mouth and biting down.
So I can see Number 78 coming up in a way that differs from what it’s supposed to mean in Bsd Beast.
And having a far more sinister meaning.

A little observation
I have always found interesting this.
(Atsushi's part won't be spoken but I added the eventual parallel here)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rimbaud made the mistake to not separe Chuuya's humanity from his... well inhumanity and because of that he was terrified for life, as soon as he tried to take Arahabaki as his ability.
Then during 15, he recognized that mistake and he said that he wasn't going to commit it again. Because of that he was going to cut off Chuuya's head and keep only his body.
Which makes sense, considering Chuuya's inherent humanity is on his brain and not inside his heart.
His body is anormaly strong and resistent and that much is visible.
But the fact that, to open the "gate", Verlaine touched his forehead is pratically the opposite.
Plus, if we see what a singularity is...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It gives us a fair amount of things to think about.
Moreover some symbolism Chuuya has.
Such as his government number A5158 that is the name of a star HIP 5158
Tumblr media
A brown dwarf.
And then two other numbers.
His code lines 2383.
Tumblr media
And the 169th possibility
Tumblr media
It's very interesting this information.
Chuuya is a really interesting character considering he is able to surpass the laws of physics.
And for now let's just keep this sentence.
Time is relative.
It can stretch and squeeze but it can't run backwards.
The only thing that can travel across dimensions like time is gravity.
Interstellar
Tumblr media
This probably explains why was Chuuya able to see his past through Verlaine and why Rimbaud needed Chuuya to see the past.
Turns out that I don't exclusively write.
I theorize a lot!
But right now this last sentence gave us to think.
Until next time!
Next part

So my friend and I have made a bungou stray dogs server because this hyperfixation has me by the throat and isn't letting go anytime soon and we need people to scream with. If you would like to join feel free! The link expires in 7 days so if you catch it after that, just send me a message and I'll send you a new one.
In the meantime, have some gorgeous sskk art I've stumbled across

The Arahabaki project
If you've already thought the whole Lab scene in Stormbringer was traumatic/sad.
If you think about it, and pointing that the government probably didn't have information about nullying abilities like Dazai's. Trhe whole Arahabaki project would almost certainly been the equivalent of an Atomic bomb/ suicidal attack.
Like, as told in Yosano's back story, they were loosing the war, so it makes sense they were so desperate to create a weapon powerful enough to flip the table. However Arahabaki's power is only released through Corruption: A massive amount of power able to completely destroy anything in a wide range.
But without a nullifier it becomes a One-use attack. There is not turning back once Arahabaki takes control of its vessel and starts ripping it apart from the inside out due to the excessive amount of energy, until the person falls dead mere minutes after it began.
Imagine the amount of trauma from being tortured on a daily basis, treated like a lab rat by strangers, just to be transformed into a living bomb with no control over your own body and who will surely also have a even more painful dead.
Now, that scene from Dead Apple where the government employees and Ango refer to Chuuya as 'A5158' hits way harder. Even if he got to escape from the lab and become a powerful ability user, they still consider him a playable final card in extreme cases.

Let us all set two things absolutely straight here: 1) A5158 is Chuuya’s serial number and all ability users have one, its just registration. A258 is his human experiment number. Go read sbr you losers
2) Ango becomes infinitley cooler read pathetic once you realise he goes around calling people their social security numbers idgaf what u think my man became a government agent at like 17 and decided to commit to the bit

"Have you pinpointed skill user A5158's location yet?" "I have," they replied. "Then could you give him a message?" "What would you like me to tell him?" Ango quietly stared at the image of fog covering Yokohama. They were out of time. With a hint of desperation in his voice, he responded: "...'It's time to pay Professor Glasses back.'"
this is the stupidest exchange ever. also what the fuck is Ango and Chuuya's beef. is that ever actually explained (do not answer that, i'll read it if its there). i can't get over Ango in desperation and mild agony referring to himself as Doc Glasses. its supposed to be all dramatic with the weight of the world but its so stupid

Y'know how Chuuya has 2 identifier numbers referring to him? A5158 as his ability user identification code, and A258 as his lab experiment number.
but i have to wonder, why do the codes both start with the letter A, and end with the number 58? surely its not just a coincidence. and then i came up with a theory: A258 used to be Chuuya's ability user identification code.
but how can Chuuya have 2 ability user identification codes, and how did they change?
Ability user identification codes are used by the government to keep track on ability users more easily. Government workers, specifically Ango, refer to people . As of writing, Chuuya's code is the only one we know of.
In a similar fashion, the laboratory (the government laboratory) used the code A258 to refer to Chuuya, the prototype and test subject for their Project Arahabaki experiment. We have no idea why that specific code is his, if it means there where 257 other experiments started at that lab prior to Chuuya or if they just gave him a random ass number (same goes for the ability user identification code)
now here's where my theory comes in.
Legally, Chuuya is two people. We know this.
The first Chuuya was a little 7-year-old boy who was pronounced dead during the war. that was how the government hid the fact that they were experimenting on a child. To this day, even Chuuya's family (i know, shocker, a non-orphan in bsd) believe he is dead.
we know this boy had an ability, a self contradicting one at that. It's never confirmed what this ability is, but it is heavily implied to be ability amplification). Whatever it was, it was definitely not gravity manipulation as we know it is today. Since this kid had an ability, and was found by the government for said ability, he probably had an ability user identification code.
The second Chuuya is, of course, the gravity manipulator we already know. The little 8-year-old boy who showed up out of nowhere (read: suribachi crater) with no memory of his past. At some point Chuuya probably got a new legal identity.
The government likely knew these two Chuuyas were actually just the same person, so its possible they gave Chuuya a similar ability user identification code. Why? i dunno, maybe just to make things easier.
