As the number one Laura Kinny fan what do you think of her relationship with Remy vs her relationship with akihiro as her two older brother figures in her life. I think they have a really interesting contrast especially since Laura first meets Akihiro in the comic where Remy is mentoring her. Also sorry for mass rebloging your stuff.

Laura and Akihiro met twice before Collision, in the original Utopia arc (which isn't really important for their relationship other than being the first time they encounter each other), and then in the second story of the Wolverine Goes to Hell oneshot, which sets up the events of Collision.

That being said, I actually primarily tend to interpret Remy as more of a paternal figure to Laura-- or at least, I think it's reasonable to infer that the person he considers his relationship with her to be most comparable to, in terms of what he's doing, is Logan. And the thing is, I think Logan agrees with this assessment!

In this scene, I think "doing what I couldn't" refers to two things-- the earlier scene where Laura is dosed with trigger scent and Remy is able to bring her out of it, and then also just like. Parenting Laura in general. This also lines up with the scene from issue 10, where Remy essentially calls Logan out for his parenting in regards to Laura versus his parenting in regards to Jubilee.

And then, later on, when Laura was in a coma for three days after the Captain Universe arc, Logan isn't the one camping out in the Baxter building to make sure she's alright-- Remy is. When Laura decides not to go to the Jean Grey School, she stays at one of Remy's safehouses.

That ended up being a lot about Remy and not very much about Akihiro, but all that is to say that I don't have much of an opinion on Remy versus Akihiro as Laura's brothers/brother-figures, because I don't think Remy is a fraternal figure to Laura.

I know a lot of people do interpret Remy as more of a brother figure to Laura, and there's obviously nothing wrong with that. We read the same comics-- it's a valid interpretation of the text. I'm not trying to say that anybody is wrong for thinking that, or else shit on anybody. It's just not the interpretation that I, personally, find most interesting.

But to at least sort of answer your question, I think Laura is probably more relaxed around Remy in a way that she isn't with Akihiro, because she doesn't feel the need to corral or keep an eye on Remy the way she does with Akihiro.

I think there's probably some small resentment towards Akihiro for that, also, because she doesn't like the fact that she can't trust him around other people. This is worsened by the fact that Akihiro, through a combination of knowing Laura very well and just being aware of what he's like as a person, definitely knows about that and depending on his mood might either play to that or call her out for it. At his worst he'd probably accuse her of trying to control him, which given their histories is very loaded.

Regardless of the specifics of how you interpret their relationships, I think Remy is much more aware that he is the adult with Laura and tries to actually act the part, whereas Akihiro has never meaningfully acted as the adult in the room with anyone, but especially not Laura. This results in Remy being an overall safer and more stable adult presence in Laura's life that she's really not getting anywhere else.

Now that you’ve gotten into jjk what do you think of maki she is arguably gojo’s greatest success as someone who would have been involved with the jujitsu world anyway gojo just gave her power, she is everything toji fans think he is but better anyway I would love to hear your thoughts on her and how she relates to the larger narrative.

i love maki! maki is my girl.

i've only watched the show and i'm not really planning on reading the manga, so while i have a vague awareness of certain future plot beats i only really have the full picture through shibuya. the zenin are, imo, portrayed as the zenith of clan rank/rot. they're one of the three major clans and its meaningful i think that they are positioned as historic rivals to the gojo clan. their single-minded interest in hereditary sorcery is a part of this rot, and maki's treatment by them as someone who can't see cursed energy (as well as the misogyny she faces from them!) is a part of this.

its hard to call her gojo's success really as he does not seem to have much to do with her. largely his involvement with her training seems to be throwing other students at her for her to teach (yuta, megumi) and letting her build herself up this way. it's clearly working for her but its much less hands on than he is with some other students. hard to know if this is a failure of gojo's or akutami's. or both. believable to me either way. certainly she fits the mold of 'person ready to be saved' that gojo is looking for. she's really individualistic in the pursuit of her goals.

maki's desire to demonstrate her strength to her clan and revenge herself in that way are very interesting to me in this context. this might be the way in which she is most clearly gojo's success, because i think she also believes you die alone, so to speak. they share a certain philosophy there. she needs to assert her individualistic goal, her individual strength, and can't ask others for help because rejecting her clan was a rejection both of the claim that she could not function as support and that she could function only in a support role as a servant. in her relationships with her peers i think this feeling manifests as her liking being seen as cool and strong but being embarrassed and put off by true support (see her relationships with nobara and yuta), and with mai it obviously manifests as her emphasizing her separation from mai and mai's own agency (regardless of mai's feelings). of course, maki's desire for complete individualism is hindered by the zenin clan's position in jujutsu society and their willingness to use it against her. and she is willing to step past this individualistic perspective sometimes, such as with her fight with megumi against hanami! love a team-up for her, and its interesting to me that it happens with the other not-zenin they have at the tokyo school.

also i think maki is so cool and i really want her to have a win so bad. she deserves a real win!

What kind of acting do you think Simon does I always imagine him in like a supernatural TV show like Buffy or in classic action flicks but in the most recent Avengers Academy it looked like he was in a fantasy show.

Historically Simon has seemed to be primarily employed in B and C tier Hollywood action films, although the first film he was ever in (sans the Mr Muscles kids TV show bit) was a spaghetti Western from Avengers #207. His big acting break was playing the villain in Arkon IV, acting across an early 80s Arnold Schwarzenegger, a role he lands in WCA v2 #6. The vibe of it is very sword-and-sorcery, Conan the Barbarian style, which was probably what the Avengers Academy film was referencing.

Simon also starred in the film Damage Control, with THE Marlon Brando and Shelly Long of all people??? from the hit marvel comic that everyone knows and loves, Damage Control v3 #3. Simon shows his entire bare booty ass in this comic, which is the most notable thing about the issue.

Beach Volleyball Bros 2 was mentioned in X-Force v6 #50, which when I heard it, I envisioned a terrible Baywatch (2017) rip-off, but it could really be anything.

Simon was ALSO hired to star in an adaption of Macbeth, during Wonder Man v2. There's a few different films that he's brought on to work on during the course of this series, and Simon seems to struggle with being typecast in action-slop roles, which, given everything we listed so far, is not far off the mark.

Towards the 2000s with the gradual shift in media culture and what was popular, Simon gets numerous offers in different comics to be in reality TV shows. I don't think he accepts any of them, except for Wonder Man v3 where he's shooting a reality show to rehabiliate a villain lady?? I don't know, it's a truly awful comic so I rarely count it in Simon discussions.

Simon's also offered another action-role in War of the Realms: Journey into Mystery, which he also rejects because he's a pacifist at this stage in his life.

(also in this series, Simon mentions a love for Westerns which is a cute tie-in to his first ever proper role!)

And finally, it's not comics but Simon is yet again in films that appear to be terrible c-tier action flicks in the M.O.D.O.K. show, from his appearance in episode 7. Sorry for the quality, but it is called "BRUTE FORCE 2: KANGARUDE AWAKENING" and has him with some animatronic canine? I don't know what this is, but it's something.

Anyway, so yeah, he's mosly been in bad action films, but I could see him segwaying into one of those kind of supernatural TV shows, or something CW inspired, like The Vampire Diaries or Riverdale. He does have it in him to do something a little more classy I think, but only if he/writers lent a little harder into him having a 1940s-50s Hollywood sensibility. They should give him a screwball comedy, not these action films, they aren't enriching enough for him.

Thanks so much for replying to my ask. Remy and Laura's relationship is so special and I wish we got to see more of it. In genral I love when Remy is in a teacher/dad position out with Logan in with Remy (he can even cook). I really hope we get to see more of it in this new run since he is interacting with kids. Speaking of that how did you like the whole Remy teaching arc I found the part where mystique pretend to be a student and sleep with his weird but other than that I think it really showed how great Remy can be when you put him with kids. As always love your thoughts♥♥

Thanks :) I haven't actually read that arc, both because I've been off my Marvel game recently and I just haven't read for Remy other than incidentally. It's also Roxy's first appearance, though, so I really need to read it. I probably wouldn't have much to say about Remy that other people who are more familiar with the character haven't said at length, though.

I have been loosely keeping up with Uncanny, though I'm somewhat apprehensive (I don't generally love Simone as a writer), leaning somewhat positive. Plus the art is good to look at, and that's always a plus.

I'll read the Bizarre Love Triangle arc and then see if I have thoughts, though again because I'm mostly motivated to read it for Roxy it might have more to do with her.

Since your in a Maddy mood and I'm always up to talk about Maddy what do you think of scott's marriage with Maddy arguably being his most at peace happy times (see x-men/Alpha flight) but at that time Maddy arguably having the least agency. Not arguing that Maddy did not love Scott but at this point Mr Sinister had set up most everything in her life.

i think the fact that maddy's marriage with scott is something she ultimately has little control over is one of her big tragedies!

i (maybe predictably) disagree with the take that scott's marriage with maddy is his most at peace happy time. while you can argue that, i think he's clearly a jerk to her at various points throughout his relationship with her, from questioning whether she's jean to thinking she'll take care of the baby to his various x-men based hang-ups. i think their whole relationship is worth looking at here, and not just the married portions, bc things progress relatively quickly and last for a relatively short time compared to some of his other relationships. in total i think their relationship has a lot of ups and downs, with one of the main tension points being scott's continued connection to the x-men. sometimes they're very sweet!! i like them a lot! but i also like them bc i think their marriage is pretty much doomed.

you're right that scott becomes a big jerk around trial of magneto. "Who Will Lead Them?" is scott in one of his jerkiest moments, and he's not great in the lead-up either (not calling maddy, for example) but i personally still enjoy it, and i don't think its too discordant a characterization from earlier issues. who will lead them is, in addition to a big scott/maddy fight, an issue about scott's feelings about leaving the x-men, being abandoned by xavier, and the x-men changing beyond his recognition. it makes sense to me that he sucks in that context.

to the other point: the idea that chris claremont did not initially conceive of maddy as a clone doesn't particularly matter to me. personally, i think maddy is framed as jean or jean-like so frequently in so many different ways that the idea that something is NOT up with her becomes bizarre. she's identical to jean, something immediately apparent to everyone when they first meet her. she jokes about reading minds, her wedding issue has mastermind placing her in the role of jean grey, she was in a fiery plane crash the day that phoenix died! if she's just a normal woman scott is happily married to that refuses to pay all of that off and is very boring to me (and also i don't think claremont could expect it NOT to be paid off, setting up all that in the realm of superhero comics, where future writers will continue the story). she may not have been initially conceived of as a clone, but she had to have SOME connection to jean to justify all the coincidences building up around her.

all that is not to rag on your investment in claremont's intentions, but to explain my own ambivalence. basically i think whether claremont wanted to make her a clone or not, from the start he wrote a story where that turned out to be a surprisingly natural and compelling reveal. and that trumps whatever he initially intended for me.

I also binge read Be My Villain yesterday and it’s SUCH a funky BL.

Uuuh also Mystic Prince is fantastic, but I’m still in the middle of reading that one.
