Because of the nature of Nova’s origin story, neither Cas nor Bay are sure of her actual birthday. After the initial shock of everything wore off, the two of them took the girl into the nearest hospital for a general check-up. The toddler got a clean bill of health, and the doctors determined that the child had to have been around two years old, but it was impossible to tell her exact age. Unsure of what else to do, Cas and Bay have started celebrating the day it all started – January 14th – as a sort of “gotcha” day. They never really call it her birthday in the Silver household, but if you don’t know the whole story, that’s what most people assume.

Special Talents :

Though she may not look exactly like her parents, there are lots of things Nova seems to have indirectly inherited from them, including their powers. Yes, Nova was bless with manipulative abilities over three parts of life: water, destiny, and portals, and – because, of course – Nova’s powers seem to be even stronger than either Bay’s or Cas’, and seem to stretch over a wider range of things (ie, though Bay can only manipulate the destiny of her parents, as related to Lela, Queen of the Beach, Nova has the capacity to bend and change the plotline of any fictional story at will)…

But there’s a light at the end of the twisty tunnel: by the time Bay and Castor realized their daughter had powers (fourth birthday, game of hide-and-seek taken a little too far, long story for another time), it was very clear that, despite her age, the young girl seemed to have complete control over them. And, as she grew older, Nova’s interest in her powers seemed to decrease significantly. Nowadays, Nova practically only uses her powers for pranks with the family, and not much else; it makes Bay and Castor more relieved than either are willing to admit. Even now, they’re not sure just how far Nova’s powers can be pushed and they’re hoping they’ll never have to find out.

Who They Like Better :

There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that when it comes to her parents, Nova loves both of them, but she is – and will always be – daddy’s little girl. Perhaps it’s internalized gratitude about the fact that he saved her in the first place, or maybe there are other forces at play, but ever since the first day she called him “daddy”, they’ve been partners in crime – and let’s face it, she’s got him wrapped around her fingers like its no one’s business.

Who They Take After More :

If you ask this question of Nova’s friends and family, most would say she’s a carbon copy of her father, and they’d be half-right. What a lot of people don’t realize is that Nova actually presents as more of a mix of her parents than anything…if we’re talking about the version of Bay that existed before Castor told her the truth. Sure, she has her moments, and she loves her family more than anything, but the Bay she once was, the Bay that was careless and risky and “cool” – the version of Bay that Nova seems to emulate more than anything – that Bay doesn’t exist, fullly, anymore. She’s reserved for special occasions only, though, in those moments, it’s easy to tell. Nova is a mix of both her parents, most certainly.

Personal Headcanons :

Once upon a time, Bay had an imaginary friend named Onion, who she cherished, and loved, and never wanted to be without – except, he wasn’t imaginary, and his name wasn’t Onion. It was Castor, Castor Silver, and twelve years after he disappeared from her life, he returned to it.

Just, one tiny problem – Bay didn’t put two and two together, and even though Castor did … he had no intention of telling her.

So for years, their friendship grew, until Castor couldn’t handle it anymore, and he told Bay, and…it broke her. It was like a switch was flipped, the walls of confidence and exuberance she’d built fell down in record timing, leaving a wreck where the girl once was. Bay cut off all ties with Castor – with quite a few people, really – and, after graduation, left Buena Vista without even a backwards glance.

It was a snowy night in January a little more than five years later when everything changed again. Bay was reading in the comfy chair in her living room by the window when she heard a sudden series of thuds, like someone falling down her staircase. She put her book down and ran to see, surprised to find Castor, lying with his back toward the ceiling, at the bottom of her staircase. He was cut and burned and bruised and in that moment, everything that happened, all the words exchanged between them, slipped away. Bay rushed to his side, as he repeated the same words over and over again: “I saved her. I saved her. I saved her.”

When Bay rolled him over, she was shocked to find, in his arms, the most beautiful and adorable little girl she had ever seen.

Though looking back at Bex’s early childhood, it is easy to see the signs of things to come, everything came to a head when they turned nine. Nova was over fourteen at the time, but the two Silver children were quite close, and often fell asleep in Nova’s bed next to each other. Nova’s nightmares (a direct result of the undermined amount of time she spent lost in the Void before Castor came to her rescue) were getting increasingly worse at this point; one of these nights, Castor and Bay were woken by the screams of their eldest child. Both parents practically jumped out of bed and raced down the hall. By the time they’d arrived, though, the scene had quite obviously shifted – it was Bex who was crying, sitting in the corner of the room, knees hugged close to their chest. Nova, who was still sitting up in bed, seemed eerily calm, as though her emotions had been drained away. It took some soft coaxing from Bay to convince Bex to tell their parents what had happened, and eventually, Castor and Bay came to the most logical conclusion they could: their youngest child was empathetic contagion. Bex possessed the ability to tap into the neurochemical system which controls emotions and manipulate them simply by coming in direct contact with someone, though this action resulted in a significant amount of pain in Bex themselves.

Who They Like Better :

Bex loves both of their parents equally, and doesn’t really like one more than the other, but it is clear to anyone who meets them that they practically idolize their older sister. Nova is everything to them, and always has been; even though there’s such a large age gap, the two are very much hooked to each other’s sides. After Nova leaves for college, though, Bex has a small epiphany, and realizes that they’d kind of been ignoring their parents in favor of their sister. It’s throughout high school that they really kindle their relationships with Castor and Bay, and begin to appreciate their parents in a whole new way.

Who They Take After More :

Unlike their older sister, Bex is biologically related to Castor and Bay, and physically looks more like them than Nova does. Personality-wise, though, the teenager couldn’t be more different. Like in many other tales of this type, this wasn’t always the case – as a small child, Bex was just as energetic and loud as their father and sister, but after their powers kicked in, a lot of this energy seemingly disappeared. They’re still quite compassionate, and enjoy quality time with their family, but Bex is a lot more timid than either of their parents or their older sister. They’re also very emotional, but keep most of this emotion to themselves, instead choosing to try to deal with it on their own.

Personal Headcanons :

Bex’s powers seemed to have more of an impact on their life than Nova’s powers did on hers, and, from the time Bex turned nine to about age eleven, Bex hated it. They hoped and prayed that their ability would just go away, but the older they got, the stronger their powers became, and the less Bex was able to ignore them. Because of the physicality nature of their power, the child became extremely talented at avoiding most direct contact with people around them, including their parents and sister. Bex stopped hugging, stopping holding hands, stopped falling asleep in Nova’s bed; they were scared, of themselves, of what they could do, of the potential pain they could cause.

And then, Castor and Bay went away for a weekend, leaving their children in the house by themselves, and Nova had another night of nightmares. Bex woke up to Nova’s screams, and as much as they attempted to ignore it, it got to a point where they couldn’t take the sound of Nova’s pain anymore and had to intervene. Bex ran down the hall into Nova’s room and used their powers to kick into Nova’s neurochemistry, calming Nova down but creating a large amount of personal neurological pain in the process; Nova, once relaxed, ran out of the room and returned with a glass of water and some Advil, which she gave to Bex. It helped, a little, to ease the pain Bex was feeling. Once both siblings seemed to have more of a grip on themselves, they embraced, and spent the rest of the night catching up and creating a plan to help Bex get the hang of their powers.

It took another two years time to get the hang of it, a period of trail and error which was difficult to watch and almost impossible to navigate. Bex was in pain a lot of the time, and developed some coping habits that were not very healthy, but Nova was a significant source of support and love. By the time Bex turned thirteen, they were in a significantly better place than they had been (coming out as genderqueer/switching their name from “Rebecca” to “Bex” and pronouns from “she/hers” to “they/them” helped with this process, because Bex no longer felt as though they were hiding that part of them either). The child who’d been so warm and lovable was peeking through again, and Bex began to gravitate back towards the people they’d distanced themselves from before.

Originally, to prevent accidental contact with others, Bex often wore long-sleeves or gloves or hats; though they now have more control of when their ability is triggered, they still enjoy wearing beanies and can rarely be spotted without one.

If you ask Bex about it, they will tell you without a doubt that the would not be alive – let alone thriving – without their big sister. Bex will never be able to thank Nova enough for what she did for them.

“I tried, I failed. It’s a tragic story, really-- I bought these really, really pretty journals for the sole purpose of writing all my thoughts into, did it for about a fortnight, and then... forgot to carry it on. In all seriousness, it’s something I’d love to try again someday, but I’m not really sure it’s for me.”

“It taught me a lot, actually. Mainly, that I can actually be really good friends with the person I’m dating-- I don’t need to rush anything, and I can be happy without doing so. It also taught me that fountains are, in fact, really cold, and I need to carry more spare men’s clothes in my car than I do, but... they’re not really what I think this was looking for.”

30. If you could ask for one wish, what would it be?

“Oh... this is tough. I don’t think there’s anything I could say that’s serious. I’ve been lucky in life-- I mightn’t be happy with some things, but that doesn’t mean I’d wish for an easy out.”

“I’d wish for her to be alive. But… regardless– having her here would be better. I don’t think any of the bad from the last few years would’ve happened if she’d been here, I… even if it would have, it would’ve been easier with her. I…– I miss her.”
