“hi! gosh, i - i know you don’t know me. sorry. i just wanted to say that i really like your hair!” bailey said, with a bright smile on her features, hoping she didn’t come across too creepy. “i’ve always wanted to do something fun like that myself.” she admitted, although she truly never had the courage to do so. plus, her parents would have a heart attack. “i mean, you probably get it a lot, but it.. it looks really amazing.”

it was late. the early am, but rylie couldn’t sleep and neither, it seemed, could a lot of her fellow students. it was understandably, really. another dream house fire, right in the middle of what the radio had called the worst snowstorm buena vista had seen in fifty years - it was all too much to process. there was too much going on in her head to be able to rest easy ( or at all ), but she couldn’t just sit around idly, either, and it was the need to do something that led rylie to drifting through the sports hall, trying her best to help out. “do you need me to grab anything for you?” she stage whispered for the dozenth time, smile tired, but friendly, “extra blankets? a flashlight?- a snack?”

“ i need you to sit down, and take a breath.” bailey said, offering a smile to her best friend. she reached up, tugging on rylie’s hand to pull her closer. “you look exhausted. no offence. but you’re- you’re not going to do anybody any good if you keep running around when you need rest just as much as the rest of us.” bailey glanced around at the crowded hall, and people around them. “it’s not going to last forever. so far, everyone seems good, right?”

“——— or maybe it is better than you thought!” his heart was racing at the idea of the results meaning more than just their answers being similar to eachother paired with a good computer software. he didn’t dare to say it. after all they were still barely starting their relationship, and jaxon was so in love with the idea of love. his bias was so obvious for someone that always denies believing in fate. “i think i like yours a lot better, it fits you so well too. why did you pick it?” he scrunched up his nose ever so slightly as she played with his hair. it was weirdly relaxing whenever she did it, it made him feel reassured and accepted. not a bad thing at all, he wished she’d do it more often.

he giggled softly. “it’s nothing, babe.” he felt so giddy all of a sudden. he missed feeling this happy and being with her. it had been a busy couple of weeks he hadn’t had the time to stop, breathe or do anything that wasn’t school related. it was more than nice to be able to do his favorite thing with his favorite person. “oh… i don’t remember exactly what i wrote down. i’m pretty sure i was really vague though. but yeah, this is perfect, even if we hadn’t ended up together the familiar place would have been good. it would have made everything better and i— i’d have thought of you.” he said the last part almost in a whisper, tracing senseless patterns on her hand with his thumb. “i was planning on calling you afterwards to tell you everything” he said with a small laugh, “but yeah, in the end it would have been fine. the swim team is worth it. besides, you’re right… we somehow ended up together, we’re supporting a good cause and we’re here now, that’s all that matters.” he lifted his head from her shoulder to take a look inside the basket. all of it looked so good. if he wasn’t that hungry before he definitely was now. “just a bit, i’m sure i’ll like anything you make though… do you want to eat now? just so that we can talk more afterwards.”

bailey giggled, beaming. she’d never had somebody so in tune with her thoughts before. it was like he could read her mind, or finish her sentences for her. she tried to remember now, what the first thing was that made her become friends with jaxon. it was his hair. she was sure of it, but then also the gentle but fierce way he cared for everyone, and the shy smile and duck of his head he so often did. “i picked it because ... i don’t really know. i’ve always been jealous of the stars. they just... they don’t compare themselves to other stars, or think about what the other stars are doing. they just... shine.” she said, looking up at the sky, where stars were already peeking out yet again. they always seemed to wait for just her and jaxon. normally, bailey would be embarrassed about admitting something like that to anyone, but honestly- her and jaxon had been confidante’s first. they’d been the pair, lying here, barely knowing each other, but trading secrets about their feelings. about loneliness and love. about family. about heartbreak. 

as he called her ‘babe’, her grin got even brighter, and she couldn’t help leaning in to press the softest kiss on his lips. as soon as they brushed together, bailey let out a soft breath, almost of relief. as a way of saying, there you are. “no, no you were good. the system mainly matched people up via what sorta dates they would wanna go on. i thought it would help increase common interests and hobbies.” she said, with a small shrug. she hadn’t made the computers algorithm- she wasn’t smart enough for that, but she had talked to a lot of the tech students about it. “i would have thought about you, too. even.. when it’s not on the roof. i think about you a lot.” she admitted, one side of her mouth flicking up yet again. “that’s all that matters,” bailey agreed. she’d always known what her and dan, and her and isaac had had was love, and special- but it wasn’t this. it wasn’t mutual respect, and like, and feelings like this. bailey nodded, already shuffling to make space between herself and jaxon so she could pull the basket closer. from it, she unloaded some plates, cups, cutlery, as well as sandwiches, creamy pasta, and garlic bread. then for dessert, she’d even made a little cheesecake. “if you don’t like any of it, you can tell me, really i- i won’t mind!” bailey added, glancing back over at jaxon and offering him another grin. she truly wouldn’t mind, because she just liked the idea of jaxon being happy in general.

sometimes, the work rhea was involved in at the local animal shelter was more rewarding than she ever would have imagined it would be. there was nothing like the feeling of knowing she was doing GOOD - be it helping ease a new arrival’s fear, or nursing them back to health, or actually getting them rehomed as was the dream for them all, and getting to watch them leave with their new owners, a spring in their step. it was amazing. and sometimes, it was difficult. but rhea had found that she could handle pretty much anything thrown her way, there - except the paperwork. it didn’t matter what she was filling out - it was time consuming and boring and all around the worst, so when rhea heard the bell above the shelter’s front door signal someone’s entrance with a melodious jingle from the tiny office, she practically hopped OVER the desk she’d been sat at all afternoon to get out to the front desk before anyone else, and greet the newcomer with a huge, friendly smile. “hi! welcome to paws rescue-” her appearance into the reception space was none too graceful as she tripped over the plastic bin just inside the office door - but she took it in her stride, pretending that it hadn’t happened and she wasn’t frantically straightening up her work clothes, again, even as she gave them the rehearsed line, “are you here today to donate, adopt, foster or volunteer?”

bailey blinked, slightly alarmed, as the girl tripped slightly, before rounding the corner and standing in front of bailey. bailey had barks scooped up in her arms, and for a moment, she completely forgot what she was here for. “are you okay?” she couldn’t help asking, glancing back to where she’d tripped over the bin, in genuine concern. “oh- i- i was actually here just to say hi. barks made a few friends last time he was here.” she said, with a small laugh. she was definitely lying. she had made friends with almost every dog here. she just loved them all, and she loved talking to them about their families and bringing them little snacks. but saying that to a person, on the first meeting, was never a good idea. bailey often got strange looks anytime she spoke about talking to animals.

i- i think it’s still being yourself, and still having your own life, and hobbies and- and interests! it’s important to trust each other, and know that you can go to each other about anything.

it’s cliche of me to say, but- but definitely their smile or their laugh!

i love giving people flowers! roses included! i’ve given some to rylie, to wesley, when he was in the hospital, to avery, to my parents ... i love giving them out! as for receiving ... i think... possibly, dan maybe got me roses once?

yes. and it was ... the worst thing i’ve ever done, but it led him to his- his real true love! so, in the end, everything happens for a reason!

jaxon was practically beaming in his spot. his mind too busy processing that it was actually her to do anything else but stare at her in a mix of awe and disbelief… he was so happy, he couldn’t believe it. some sort of lucky star must have been there, hiding in the nightsky and made his wish come true. “aren’t we both really fortunate?” he mentioned playfully as he helped her with her basket. he was physically unable to wipe the smile off his face; as far as he was concerned though, there was no need to. it was a proven fact that his day just got ten times better just because this was happening. 

he covered his face in embarrassment when he heard his codename for the second time. just a few days ago he had been giggling to himself at how much of a ‘ comedic genius ’ he thought was. “oh my… it’s better when no one says it.” his smile got a tiny bit wider with the contact of her lips. he patiently waited for her to sit comfortably next to him before taking her hand in his. “thank you,” he leaned in to press small kiss on her cheek. “you look gorgeous in that dress.” he said truthfully before resting his head on her shoulder. enjoying the warmth that was so hers and that he loved. “i was kinda surprised it was the rooftop, you know? since it’s kinda our thing, i didn’t really want to be here with anyone else. so i’m really glad we ended up together.” he gave a soft squeeze to her hand, almost as if reassuring his own words with this action. “i wasn’t going to do it at first, because we’re in a relationship and i guess it could be… kinda weird? but i wanted to support you.”

“we are. i guess my algorithm is either flawed, i’m biased or...” or maybe this means something. bailey didn’t say it aloud though, instead, she felt herself blush. if anybody else even spent one minute with her and jaxon, she was sure they’d throw up. the two grinned far too big at each other, and always sat so close, as if they physically couldn’t have any distance between them. it was still relatively new, the pair of them, together. but bailey knew something, someone, special, when she saw it. “stop, i like it!” bailey said, with a light laugh, reaching up to tug his hands away. her hands cupped his face, before brushing up to his soft hair, smile still in place on her lips as she shook her head in amusement at jaxon. 

“thank you.” she flushed red, looking down at said dress, and placing her head atop jaxon’s as he rested his head on her shoulder. their hands clasped together, fingers intertwining. this was a perfect night, in her opinion. “yeah, i... didn’t know where else to pick, but in your application you said you liked the stars, so i thought it would be appropriate.” she said, still shaking her head at how she had been so dumb as to not guess that was jaxon. “i don’t wanna be here with anyone else either.” bailey whispered out, turning her head slightly, as it lay on his still, to look at him. “oh gosh- i- i totally know. i was going to text you and say... something. i don’t know what.” she laughed, clearly not having thought it through. “but it’s okay, we both know it woulda been platonic, and- and for a good cause.” she told him, lifting her head up in order to pull the picnic basket closer, and open it. “but now it’s even better because it’s not platonic but it’s- it’s still for a good cause.” bailey grinned, “are - are you hungry? i made some food. i hope you like it. i really tried to stay on the safe side, so anybody would like it.”

it felt wrong. to sit there on their rooftop waiting for someone that ( at least to his knowledge ) wasn’t bailey felt all kinds of wrong. because really… even if he wanted to fool himself into thinking otherwise. what were the chances of her being ‘ starbright ’? even if the codename itself was more than fitting for her… it was too much of a stretch. he didn’t even know if she was going to be a part of the whole event since she was the one organizing it… in fact, he wasn’t even going to be a part of it. until, at the last moment he decided he’d sign up for it just to support her cause. he sighed as he looked up at the sky. maybe he shoudln’t have gotten there so early. both his heart and mind were going a mile per second switching inbetween trying to figure out who could his partner be and hoping that whoever it was would at least be someone nice. 

the wait was agonizingly slow. part of it was his own fault, since his anxiety caused him to get there a few minutes too early. he checked his watch for the fifth time in the last five minutes… it was almost time. he fiddled with the small box in his hands. would the gift be too much? what if they didn’t like it? or if they thought it was weird? he pressed his lips together until the sound of the door opening put all his movements into a halt. he scrunched up his nose at his choice of codename, now that he heard it being called out it wasn’t as fun as he thought it was. “yes?” he said softly, frowning at the familiriaty of the voice. taking a deep breath before slowly turning around. “are you starb— bailey?” he asked with a  bright smile, all his doubts dissipating instantly and leaving behind the peace that always came when they were together.

the voice that came back was soft, and familiar, and bailey took a few steps closer, trying to work out who it was. as soon as she stepped closer, her name left the person’s lips, and bailey immediately recognised who it was. the widest grin possible broke out on her face, and she couldn’t help putting a hand up, to cover her face briefly, in surprise. “jaxon.” she was laughing then, shaking her head at herself, and taking quicker steps closer to him, still holding the basket of food in one hand. “i set myself up with my own boyfriend.” she was laughing yet again, almost in disbelief that of all the people, and the many applications she’d gotten ... she’d gotten herself with jaxon. she didn’t know if maybe some part of her sub conscious had always known it was jaxon. 

“spacejam?” bailey couldn’t help repeating once she got closer to him, smile still evident on her face. “i like it.” she added, before ducking down and pressing a kiss to his cheek. the familiar smell of jaxon washed over her, and the smooth slide of her hand on his skin. everytime she saw him, she swear- she got a little bit happier. a little bit brighter. “you- uh. you look really nice.” she said softly, lifting herself off his cheek, to chew on her bottom lip. “i.. didn’t know where to put a date, but i’m kinda glad i chose the rooftop now.” bailey still couldn’t believe her own dumb luck. she would have loved to spend time with anyone, of course, but the fact that she got to spend it with jaxon just made it that much better. “i didn’t even know you were participating!” she said, collecting up her dress and sitting down next to him, shuffling closer already.

bailey had never been on the roof with anyone except jaxon before. however, it was one of her favourite places, and it seemed this person liked it too. she glanced down at her phone, half tempted to text jaxon, because she kinda missed him, before deciding she’d have time to do so later. squaring her shoulders, she pushed open the door to the roof, already soaking in the stars, and warm air hitting her. it was nice. it always was. she’d been so busy pairing everyone else up, bailey had almost forgotten entirely about setting herself up. she hadn’t really thought she’d put a questionnaire in. she had a boyfriend after all, and he was pretty much perfect, but it was for a good cause. and if she hadn’t let wesley use that excuse, then it would be unfair for her to use it. 

most applications she’d pored over, trying to find out who was after what, and what date they’d like to go on. when it had to come herself, she’d just looked at what they’d like to do on their date, because she found it was exactly what she wanted to do. look at stars. even platonically, stars were amazing. with her, she had a small picnic basket filled with some sandwiches and pasta she’d made, as well as some cakes. who didn’t like food, after all?  she just hoped whoever this person was, they were nice. up ahead, on the roof, she could make out a figure, and she squinted, “spacejam?” bailey called out, feeling slightly silly.

aereon pursed his lips, scrunching his nose at the comment ― was bailey really going to try and get him involved in such an activity ? “ you’re, uh … you’re being serious, aren’t you ? ” he asked, sighing. “ i … i don’t know. isn’t it a little … strange ? just being paired up with someone ? at random ? ”

bailey beamed, nodding up and down still, almost like a bobblehead doll. “people do it all the time!” she insisted, already thrusting a questionnaire out to him. “it’s for a- a good cause! and maybe you’d meet someone as- as great as you!”
