YJS HCs – body types

Pairings: Yellowjackets x fem!reader

Summary: Okay so, I was thinking about body types so I could add details to my Shauna fic, really small things like skin marks and other stuff and that made me think about the other yjs too. I'm not used to writing headcanons, but here are a few that I couldn't get out of my head.

Word count: 1,9k.

Content: my personal headcanons, cursing, suggestive, fluff, insecurities, hurt/comfort, recent pop culture references so i guess modern!AU??

Note: This is so random and specific I don't think anyone will read it but I wanted to write it so badly.

English is not my first language.

shauna shipman

- I think Shauna is the most athletic of the girls, since in the first episode it’s said that she is the fastest on the team. Not necessarily thin; she is solid. Solid and warm. A warm wall seeking your touch all the time.

- She would always try to keep one hand on you and every time she touched you, her skin would be scalding hot, as if she barely needed gloves in the winter and only wore them because you told her to.

- Big spoon! She likes to wrap her arms around you and let her body wrap you completely when you cuddle or sleep together, her weight relaxing against you.

- Shauna is strong, like really strong and she knows it, her arms and legs are toned from training and she takes advantage of this to tease you at any opportunity, carrying things for you willingly (your backpack, shopping, whatever, she would be exactly like the *aggressively moves all groceries to one hand to hold yours* meme), rolling up the sleeves of her flannels ‘cause the muscles stand out, pressing you against walls/counters or simply carrying you during makeout sessions and nothing you do will take away the smug smile on her lips – well, barely nothing.

- She would also wear tank tops and shorts frequently just to make you nervous and receive compliments. It's ridiculous ‘cause she really thinks she's being subtle (she isn't).

“Shaunie, you sure you don’t want a jacket?”

“No, I’m good like that.” She's not, but she won't admit it.

“It’s raining.” You insist.

“The cold doesn't bother me anyway.” She shrugs, but leans back against you, placing her chin on your shoulder.

You snort, “Sure thing then, Elsa.”

- Shauna has a happy trail! Little baby hairs going up to her navel where she melts into a puddle when you caress her, goosebumps covering her skin in the same second.

van palmer

- I believe Van has rough hands from her goalie gloves! They're always warm even if the rest of her body isn't ‘cause of the constant movement – she expresses herself a lot with her hands too. She likes to run them down your sides just to see how your skin crawls, sometimes she does it out of nowhere just to scare you because she thinks it's funny.

- I think her skin is very sensitive, the kind that's full of moles and burns easily in the sun – you're constantly reminding her to put on sunscreen, but it's no use – she loves it when you trace patterns on her spots before bed or when you're bored somewhere.

- Her skin being so sensitive also means that hickeys and scratches are really hard to hide on her. She doesn't mind, in fact she seems to enjoy it a lot, you catch her a lot of times watching the marks spread across her shoulders and neck as they take days to disappear. That doesn't stop her from teasing you tho.

“It's been a week and there's still a purple mark on my neck. What are you, a damn vampire?” She mocks.

“Nah, you act like you wouldn't love me to be your Edward Cullen.”

She lifts her chin at you, “A leech then.”

"Van!"

- She has a belly and is very proud of it! She says it's the best for defending the goal and that it makes her fall to catch the ball less painful; She'll flex her muscles like a gym athlete when she's changing playfully just to seduce you (it works every time). She loves it when she lies in your arms after a bad day and you squish her tightly, it helps her calm down.

- She also has a happy trail, but she is too ticklish, like really ticklish. Many of your makeout sessions end up interrupted by her giggling when you drag your hands too softly under her shirt, she prefers firm touches.

- Van definitely has lots of small scars spread across her body from accidents over the years, that little weirdo (affectionate).

nat scatorccio

- Nat is as pale as a ghost, it would be impossible not to notice when you made her blush for any reason. She would try to distract you so you don't pay attention to it, but it wouldn't put off anything.

- The dark circles under her eyes are extremely pronounced, both due to her paleness and the heavy makeup she wears, so you always know when she's had a bad day or simply hasn't slept enough. She will complain incessantly about you making her stop and rest, but she will always do what you ask.

- I truly believe that she has lots and lots of moles all over her body, especially on her back.

- Some are bigger than others, large spots on the skin and she pretends that her heart doesn't warm with the fascination you have for them, but the prominent red face says everything you need to know.

“They look like small constellations, Nat," you sigh dreamily, hands soft on her naked skin, “Man, I wish I knew a single shit about stars so I could name them.”

“I’m shirtless in front of you and that’s what you’re thinking about?”

- I think she would have a lot of acne, especially on her face from sleeping and forgetting to take off her cheap makeup often, you would have to do a skin care routine together for her to really start taking care of it.

- She definitely has a tattoo scar that she got from one of those shady professionals before she was eighteen and didn't take care of it properly. You almost freaked out when she showed it to you out of fear that it would get infected. In the end she ended up with a weird drawing and a skin failure, but for Nat it was totally worth it, she says it makes her look like a badass (it's definitely not just because you kiss the mark every time you see it).

- Alright then, let me tell you, this girl is FREEZING from head to toe. No matter how well she dresses up, her whole body will remain strangely cold, which worries you at a certain point, so what better way to keep her warm than to have her glued to you like a koala all day?

- She would place her cold hands on your neck just to bother you and then smile innocently when you took them in yours to rub them and blow warm air on them. That smartass.

- Lottie is tall (at least a lot taller than me) and I think she would have a lot of growth marks, you don't grow like that as a teenager without some.

- Light streaks on the back, hips, legs and thighs that would vary in tone over time. I think she would have the habit of hiding them so that people wouldn't comment, wearing long stockings with her skirts at school parties.

- She would be so flustreaded if you showed that you liked them by running your hands up her inner thighs, scratching her back gently to feel the smooth texture of the taut skin. It makes her feel so loved.

- She has sun spots on her face, around her eyes and cheeks. You think it's so beautiful that you could admire it for hours, anywhere, but you usually do it in bed in the morning.

“Are you watching me sleep, dear?” Lottie mumbles as she wakes to find you giving her a love gauze.

“Hm-hm,” you deny quietly, “‘Not watching you sleep. I’m watching you.”

“Oh.”

- Now, Jackie would have stretch marks and be completely insecure about them. The girl needs constant validation about everything that concerns her and you better give it to her, she just wants to feel loved.

- Marks on her hips and chest that most of the time wouldn't even be visible, but she would still remember they were there. You run your hands down her sides as gently as possible and she will have tears in her eyes as you snuggle, heart warm.

- Your support helps her feel more comfortable with her own body over time, but she still wants compliments every day and will give you hints ‘til you comply with her requests.

- Jackie has freckles! This is actually one of the things she likes most about her face, the trail of dots around her nose and eyes. She’ll melt into a puddle on the floor if you start to kiss them one by one, but will lose patience if you decide to count them and stop the act of leaving wet kisses on them. She's not very good at waiting.

“Babe!” She whimpers.

“Just a second, sweetie, I’m almost finishing.” You continue, a look of pure concentration on your face, muttering “35, 36, 37…”

“No.” She says, hand grabbing the collar of your t-shirt and pulling you against her, “Come back now.”

- Jackie isn't necessarily icy, but she gets cold very easily and isn't shy about asking for your coat or jacket when you're together. Your girlfriend is a princess, better treat her like one. She'll squeeze her body against yours in bed and steal the blankets to stay warm.

- She has spots on her arms! Hundreds of light spots on the outside of the wrists to the shoulders, it's almost imperceptible, but so cute. Make sure to always let her know how beautiful she is.

- I think Misty has acne scars on her shoulders and cheeks, little red dots spreaded. She don't mind it most of time, but can be very insecure about it.

- She would be really suspicious if you just showered her with compliments out of nowhere just ‘cause you think she’s upset, so acting is better. Actions speak more to her.

- Place soft kisses on her shoulders, gently bite her cheek so she rolls her eyes in that nervous way she does. Make her feel beautiful as she is – because she is.

- She would be so pleased with you spoiling her that she would pretend to be sad about it a lot of times just to get your attention, she is an evil little genius. It’s captivating.

- She has freckles too! Little dots on her face so lightly that you only see them when she takes off her glasses, but they are there.

“I kiss you everyday, how did I never notice your freckles before?”

“Oh, I don't know.” She shrugs innocently, “Maybe you should take a closer look, baby.”

- She thinks she's so smooth but in reality she's a mess, the girl can't pick up social cues to save her life.

- Okay so, Tai is the type who takes the football really seriously and works hard to win and to do that she would try to stay in shape as much as possible. I can easily imagine her doing extra training sessions and her friends teasing her about it, ‘cause Tai, it's a high school team.

- Because of this, I think she would have stretch marks on her back and calves, light fine lines that stand out against her dark skin. These are marks of her effort, so she shows them with great pride.

- She gets very smug and her skin crawls when you run your nails over the marks on her back.

- Tai is strong, strong enough to break someones leg on the field (sorry not sorry allie) and will show off for it whenever she gets the chance. She likes to wrap her arms around you from behind and lift you off the ground when she's passing by.

- She has sun spots on her face and arms! You think it's so cute, but if you say something silly and cheesy about it she'll roll her eyes and tell you to stop embarrassing her.

You sigh, “You are so, so pretty, Tai.”

“And you are so, so lame.” She echos, “...Come here, let me kiss you.”

- Happy wife, happy life. Always make her feel appreciated, she deserves it.

A cuddler: Only with her children and husband, whenever her little ones would have nightmares she’d pull them up into the big bed with her to sleep next to her.

Jealous easily: depends. she was deeply jealous of her brother for the affection he got from their mother and for the adoration he got from the clan but I don’t think she’d get jealous in a romantic sense. She’s very secure in her relationship with Cullen.

Sibling(s): One twin brother, Ashura. She claims she’s the older sibling just to throw it in his face but she’s only about a half hour older. He does however act like a younger sibling so it’s warranted.

Parents: Her mother is keeper Deshanna of clan Lavellan and her father is virtually unknown. Most people don’t even remember his name or what he looks like but those who do always remind her how much she looks like him.

Children: She has six children! From oldest to youngest: Safi, Haidar, Nur, Adalah & Ateef (twins), and Sulwan. They didn’t plan for that many kids just for the record it just kind of snowballed over the years. It is funny to imagine it like this though

Prompt here. 𝐎𝐁𝐉𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐒. 💭 THOUGHT BALLOON — what is your oc’s MBTI, enneagram, and/or other personality aspects (if known/interested in)? He is an ISTJ and a Capricorn. He’s likely a 1 or 2 on the enneagram, but I’m not sure what wing, if any.

🚗 CAR — does your oc have a driver’s license? can they drive/operate any automobiles/machinery besides cars? Cannon has a horse, of course. Modern AU: He has his license and drives a vintage cherry red Camaro. He also has a motorcycle. He rode them during his time in the military, and it was one of the only things he bought after he left the military. He loves to take it out in the middle of the night when the world is quiet and enjoy the breeze.

✈️ AIRPLANE — does your oc like traveling, or do they consider themselves a more homey person? Cullen traveled a lot while in the Templar S.A.S. (Special Air Service.).He went to Germany, central Europe, the Middle East and Japan. His favorite was Japan. However, he considers himself a homey person. With that said, he wouldn’t mind visiting New Zealand, Ireland, Wales, South Korea or Mongolia. The National Parks interest him as well. He would definitely travel with his partner if they wanted to, but it would depend on his chronic pain and his lyrium withdrawal. 🎮 VIDEO GAME CONTROLLER — what are three of your oc’s favorite hobbies? Hiking, reading, and playing chess! As a bonus, he also secretly loves playing Age of Empires and Civilization.

💍 RING — does your oc have any piercings? do they want any (more) piercings? No, Canon does not, but Modern Au pierced his ear like George Michael on a dare.

🖊️ BALLPOINT PEN — does your oc have any tattoos? do they want any (more) tattoos? I’m not sure about Canon Cullen. I’m going to say likely not, but it’s possible he had a Templar tattoo somewhere. Modern Au Cullen definitely has at least one commemorating his service.

📚 BOOKS — what level of education has your oc most recently completed/is currently in (GED, undergraduate, grad school, phd, etc)? Canon Cullen would likely be considered very educated by Thedas standards, but I can see him being self conscious about where he was from. Modern AU Cullen is shy about his early education and secondary school because he lived in such a rural area and people made fun of him for his accent and “backwardsness”. However, he proved everyone wrong by proving how intelligent and adaptable he was. While in the military, he was able to work on a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice history and had a minor in history. Towards the end of his service, he was able to obtain a master’s degree in criminal justice, but he was surprised to learn how useful his history minor was as it taught him valuable skills such as research through archives and records.

🎻 VIOLIN — does your oc play any instruments? what is their skill level (beginner/intermediate/advanced/virtuoso/etc)? Canon Cullen cannot play instruments outside of his beautiful singing voice. Modern Au Cullen can kind of play the piano. He would be intermediate at best, but like canon, he has his gorgeous voice.

🩹 ADHESIVE BANDAGE — does your oc have any physical and/or mental disabilities? Lyrium withdrawl does a number on his body. He has chronic pain, chronic nausea, and chronic exhaustion. Sadly, a lot of people don’t believe these conditions are real and he feels like he has a reputation to maintain so he doesn’t show the extent these issues bother him. However, he does open up with those he loves most because he realizes he can’t go through the withdrawal completely alone - especially with the constant fevers he has. He also has depression and PTSD. This is for canon and modern.

Favorite Fics:

1. anatomy of a haunted heart - DA: Awakening, Nathaniel/Velanna, time loops and haunted houses

I really challenged myself to do this fic, I'm terrified of writing long fics on a deadline, but I wanted to do something different. I fell in love with both Velanna and Nathaniel while writing this fic, and I tried really hard to match up to the vision I had in my head--while that vision wasn't super clear, and I'm not sure if this did match up, I'm really happy with how it ended up!!

2. four and twenty blackbirds - Dishonored, Corvo/Granny Rags, a love letter to Granny Rags

This is another fic I got weird with, I wrote this for an exchange, and I was originally going to write Geoff Curnow/Corvo, but then Granny Rags took over my entire brain. She's just so interesting and the fic kind of got away from me. I had so much fun putting this together!

3. cut down at the garden's gate - Dragon Age 2, Hawke/Sebastian, political marriage forces you to confront your feelings for your ex, more at 11

Again, this was a challenge, and I do love how this ended up. There are sections I might rewrite, but I was really proud of finishing on a deadline (despite many issues I had with continuity haha, I'm not much of a multichap writer so even 3 chapters was tricky for me!) I think I wrote this in a rush, but I think otherwise I never would have finished this story, and I really wanted to finish and share it.

New Things I Tried: Time-based challenges! i.e. a DA Big Bang, and the WIP Big Bang... And I tried DADWC and really ended up liking it!! I think it did a lot to help me learn how to write without judgment and just get a story or concept out, and I used a lot of what I wrote and learned from DADWC as inspiration to write or finish larger stories.

Fic I Spent the Most Time On: dead winter in the forgotten land (Dragon Age), this was like two years in the making lol

Fic I Spent the Least Time On: I think savior complex (THG); I wrote it as a pinch-hit for a Hunger Games exchange, which was super fun!

Favorite Things I Read: I read so much amazing stuff this year but here are 3 that come to mind:

dirt romantic by rowanisawriter (@rowanisawriter) GUYS this fic... Peak romance, peak Zevran, the relationship between Zevran and a Cousland Warden is one of pining and differences in status and constantly shifting boundaries and Rowan writes that perfectly. Please read this and come be ill about Zevran with me....

Eat, Drink, Poison by elo_elo (@junkbabelna): This is a Cullen/Trevelyan modern AU--I aspire to write modern AUs like theirs, I love the details and the atmosphere so much. I think that they have such a knack for just getting to the heart of a character and what shaped them that way!!

a soft place to fall by petruchio (@petruchio): This was a gorgeous fic about Johanna coming back to District 12 after the war, I really love the way her recovery is portrayed and how all of the characters are struggling to adapt to a life that's in their control.

Biggest Surprises: I think that I’m capable of writing longer pieces? I was flying blind for both the longer pieces I did on deadline and somehow finished on time. I reread "anatomy of a haunted heart" the other day and I still can't believe I did that, lol. It was very scary, but I'm proud of it.

What I Learned: To keep writing when I'm feeling discouraged, sometimes I write a piece and I think it's mediocre, but when I go back and compare it to things I had written before, there is definitely growth there. I've been rereading what I wrote this year since I was feeling like I was rushing through pieces and they weren't as good, but I was really proud of some of the works I put out! So I guess I've had to keep in mind that I'm always changing, even if that's not evident at all times.

What I Want to Write Next Year: I want to try writing horror--I think that would be a real challenge for me, but I love reading it. I want to do more outlined/planned out fics. I want to finish at least 3 of my WIPs: my arranged marriage AU, the last part to a Bollywood series i posted, and my post-destroy fic!

Most importantly, thank you to everyone who has read, commented on, and supported my writing--I would not have written without y'all, and I'm so happy to have found this community of people who also feel that writing and reading are necessary to them!! It makes writing so much more fun, I'm really grateful to have you 💕💕

Hi, I was doing some research regarding the characters for an AU project and I noticed a Reddit post where it's said that there were some historical inaccuracies regarding the Cullens' canon heights. Do you think you can help elaborate on what is true or false? Maybe explain with their human backgrounds in mind like the time frames, how they grew and were brought up in their family status, etc. Maybe that affected how they grew.

I mean were there tall people in the past? Sure. But the Cullen men are tall even for the modern era. The average American male is about 5'9" (175 cm). The Cullen men are 6'2-6'5" (188-195 cm). They are STILL abnormally tall and would have been even more abnormally tall back in their human lives.

The average (English) man in Carlisle's era (based on I think soldiers of a certain war, I can't remember the details) was about 5'7" so only a little shorter than the average American today, but still considerably shorter than Carlisle himself was/is. It probably a lot to do with nutrition. People couldn't necessarily reach their full height potential if they weren't properly fed, but it could also have been genetics. I'm no expert on any of this.

There were certainly tall people in the past (I think Abe Lincoln about said to be about 6'4"), but probably fewer of them, and also statistically it seems really weird that all four Cullen men would just so happen to be over six feet tall. It makes you kind of want to handwave it like, "oh well maybe tall people are targeted by vampires because there is more blood, or they are more likely to survive being fed on because there's more blood" or something. But this height thing doesn't apply to female vampires, where several of them are very short and thus should have been less likely to survive/be targeted.

Edward, at least, was from an upper middle class or possibly even upper class family, so he was probably getting good (for the time) nutrition. We really don't know anything about Jasper's upbringing; Emmett grew up in relative poverty and hunted for food for his family and worked on the railway. Carlisle likewise it's hard to say; it's implied they weren't wealthy but there were some perks to being the children of clergy that could work in his favor.

At the end of the day I think SM just thinks tall men are attractive and so most of the male characters you're supposed to think are sexy are also Very Tall, but women can be tall (Siobhan, Zafrina) or short (Alice, Maria), and everything in between.

Any ONE of the Cullen guys being tall isn't that unlikely; what's unlikely for their time periods is that ALL of them are. I guess Carlisle and Jasper could have been 'targeted' by the vampires who turned them because they were tall (assuming vampires do have a reason to turn tall people and/or tall people are more likely to survive being fed on), but it doesn't apply to Edward and Emmett who were turned because someone else asked Carlisle to save them (Edward's mom and Rosalie). I think SM just likes tall dudes.

I try to respond to all of them! Sometimes I get behind, but I usually get to them by the time I post a new chapter, at least.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Uhh probably i've looked at clouds from both sides now. Even though only one of the major characters dies, it somehow still feels angstier than the literal necrophilia fic where they both die.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I feel like most of my other fics have a happy ending? Both of the completed multi-chaps I linked above definitely do.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I occasionally get a rude comment, but I have no qualms about being a dick or just deleting/blocking. I have gotten a few tumblr anons that made me roll my eyes, but any hate I get has been firmly a THEM problem and not a ME problem. Haters stay pressed. 💅

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

It's a rare day when I do not write smut. I write all kinds. Since writing in the Daemyra fandom, my list of "hard no's" when it comes to writing has rapidly diminished; it seems like every other day I discover a new kink that makes my brain do a record-scratch. I started writing fic again in 2020, and published baby's first smut shortly thereafter, but it was fairly standard stuff. Now I'm like "well if you aren't literally digesting your lover, is it really romance??!"

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

The only crossover I've written is a House of the Dragon/Naked Attraction crackfic that infected my brain during the depths of binge of the latter show.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Only one that I know of - someone copy/pasted all of do you really feel alive without me into different chapters of their ""fic"".

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

for our blood is restless was translated into Russian here.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

No. My writing process is chaotic and inconsistent and I would not inflict that on another writer. I'm also very particular about what I do and do not want to write, as well as my prose, so I don't think co-writing is for me. If we don't like to break the rules of English grammar in the exact same way, I'm afraid we won't be able to get along.

14. What’s your all time favourite ship?

I mean, I think it's pretty obvious. 😅 Daemon Targaryen/Rhaenyra Targaryen (House of the Dragon) has only been my OTP for <2 years, but they are already my all time favorite. Prior to that, it was Dramione (Harry Potter), Cullen Rutherford/Female Inquisitor (Dragon Age: Inquisition), and Aloy/Avad (Horizon Zero Dawn).

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Not technically a single WIP, but I always meant to add more stories to my collection of Cullen/Inquisitor Dragon Age fics (most of which I posted during Swoon June 2022). It's possible I'll experience another burst of inspo for that fandom when Dragon Age: Dreadwolf finally comes out, but I'm pretty firmly entrenched in Daemyra for the foreseeable future.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Dialogue, characterization, ANGST. I think my smut is pretty hot. Idk I generally like everything about my writing. That's why I keep doing it.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Uhhh anything to do with plotting or planning. We thrive on vibes here. ✌️

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

Beyond the occasional word or phrase in High Valyrian for my HOTD/ASOIAF fics, I cannot be bothered. Italics and a dialogue tag do me just fine.

This changes semi-regularly, but my current favorite is one that I'm actively writing - a Daemyra early marriage canon divergence (milk teeth). Also because I just re-read this the other night - surrender (a rare non-Daemyra HOTD fic).

Fiora - stature: What's your OC's body type? How tall are they? Do they wear clothing to accentuate their look or do they try to mask it?

I think of my three main heroines, Fiora is definitely the tallest. She's like 5'10'' in my head. But she likes wearing heels that put her over 6 feet. (And I picture Alistair at like 5'11'' so she especially likes heels that make her taller than him. He pouts but finds it kind of endearing actually lol) As for body type, I picture her as very graceful but athletic - kind of ballerina-esque in stature. Defined muscle, fantastic legs, and STRONG-looking thighs. Canon Dragon Age Fiora probably can't wear booty shorts, but Modern AU Fiora definitely does to show off her Legs™.

Marian - canvas: Does your OC have any scars, piercings, tattoos, or other markings? Do they display or cover them up at all?

She got her ears pierced during that first year in Kirkwall bc she and Carver got drunk and someone in the Red Iron dared them to. Carver only got one ear but she got both. She probably didn't wear earrings much until after she gets the Hawke estate because then she has enough money to buy, like, cute earrings she actually WANTS to wear lol. I headcanon that the iconic Hawke "blood mark" across her nose is actually a birthmark. She shared it with Malcolm (and unbeknownst to her, other members of the Hawke family had it as well, like Malcolm's mother, and grandfather, etc etc). The only prominent scar she has is a long one on her left cheek that she got from the Arishok fight. She's surprisingly vain so any other scars she usually heals them with magic to get rid of them, but the cheek scar stays as a reminder to anyone who wants a piece of her that she took on a seven foot oxman and fucking won. And I think she has just one tattoo, at least in the Dragon Age canon verse, that she got after DA2 but before Inquisition. A spray of pink and white gardenias along her neck that represent her beau, Sebastian (white gardenias represent purity, sweetness, and peace; pink gardenias represent beauty and a fresh start). I just never draw her with the tattoos bc I'm lazy lmao.

Hildegarde - motion: How does your OC move? How does their clothing help or hinder their range of motion? Are they flexible, coordinated, clumsy?

Hildegarde is very closed off at the start of Inquisition. She's shy, she's not used to people looking at her, and her body language reflects that. She's normally curled in on herself, hunched to look smaller than usual, constantly fidgeting with something to occupy herself - usually she wrings her own hands, but after Cullen gives her his lucky coin, she wears it on a necklace and tumbles it between her fingers to help ground herself. Despite all that, she's unexpectedly coordinated. She's fast. Kind of like a rabbit darting to and from one hidey-hole to the next. Clothing-wise, she prefers trousers to the typical mage robes bc it helps her dodge and get away faster. She's also a surprisingly good dancer. And as she grows more confident, it starts to reflect in the way she moves. She still won't willingly draw attention to herself, but she stands taller, fidgets less.

Even if it didn't look like it, Grantaire was a pretty old man, and he'd decided to get more in touch with the world and with how the world viewed those of his kind, lately.

Thus, his apartment had been covered with the most disparate books and movies about vampires the twenty-first century could provide.

He was nose-deep into one of those books when Enjolras walked in, boiling hot from the sunny weather, incredibly glad for the nice chill of the AC and the deep curtains draped to block the light out.

"How's your reading going, love?"

He let his bag fall beside the door and quickly joined his boyfriend on the couch with a little jump, guiding one of his hands away from the book to wrap that arm around his shoulders. Grantaire tugged him closer and looked up from the book, leaving a peck on Enjolras's cheek.

"On a scale from Stefan to Damon, how Salvatore do you think I am?"

"You're Edward Cullen and we both know it".

"I'm - creepy and constipated?"

Enjolras rolled his eyes at him, "You're a pretentious little shit. Don't worry though, I still love you".

Enjolras rolls his eyes at him, but it's fake because he's blushing and Grantaire very well knows it, "I would say it's impressive, but I know you have super strength. See? You're a pretentious little shit".

He still kisses Grantaire though, wrapping his arms around Grantaire's neck to pull himself up. Grantaire rubs their noses together and smiles on Enjolras's cheek, "the only super thing I have is patience, and it's all thanks to you".

i started reading fics on ao3 not so long ago, so my collection is humble and classic, still...

these are purely gen/plot and character focused with rare nsfw scenes:

small secret spaces – i adore this absolute gut punch of a fic, it's about 2k words and is written from bull's tama perspective. absolutely heartbreaking as anything regarding bull's time on seheron.

there's also i can see us gather at the gates from the same author, a 36k words work in progress, bull x f!trevelyan. it studies them both in opposition to each other, this one got me thinking and feeling for days.

there's also a very short the sea is unchanged in the same series, i recommend lilith_morgana's works in general, because just as this one, they're always written with such love for the characters, as well as with wise, mature understanding of them.

ebasit – a different author, another character study, 12k. so far the only inquisitor!bull fic i've seen, not even on ao3, and by god it's tasty. it's adoribull and bull x josephine, but still mostly a character study. bull seems to be more serious and tough here than as a companion. there is also one thing about adoribull that'll absolutely break your heart in the best way possible.

but there's a twist is an almost 60k words modern au adoribull fic that's definitely worth checking out because i'm not overestimating when i'm saying that it's got everything. this will be painful, this will be sweet and rewarding. and the title does not lie. again, this fic seems to be just one of a kind, very glad a thing like this just exists. also, lilacsolanum is overall an amazing writer,

and vasaad proves it. i respect any fic that touches on vasaad's character because there's just so much angst potential in just a few words cole says in canon, and this one? nailed it. it's also 6k words adoribull. bull's got some baggage, bull's gotta understand that dorian's not afraid of it.

(there's also my father and his father before him from the same author, but even though it's an adoribull fic, it's more of a study of dorian. also highly recommend, gets you very invested in dorian's depressed shenanigans. also the best portrayal of halward i've seen.)

continuing with the vasaad theme, triptych is probably one of the most well-known works on this list. adoribull 41k words soulmate au. it's got such a good grasp on bull's grief. the soulmate au reality only enhances it. i was fascinated at how the system of qunari names was intertwined with the significance of names for the soulmate au. and vasaad? oh. he haunts the entire work, and frankly, it feels right.

cassandra and the chrysanthemum caper is going to be right up your alley if you enjoy older characters exploring pining and slow burning in 16k words while being rather oblivious about it. cassandra x bull, the divine and her bodyguard, and everything you can expect from these two. bonus points for bull with a disability.

stuck on the puzzle – ok, actually this one is the most well-known on this list. i don't really interact with content about cullen, and it's his pov in this cullen x bull 200k beast. but this is a very well-crafted and thoughtful work. plus, there is also an interesting exploration of characters and non-sexual bdsm. just very solid writing.

darkened room – sigh, who doesn't like good ol' ptsd-flavoured nightmares? especially when it's adoribull.

maraas kata – somehow whenever there's qunlat in the title you know it's gonna be good. i consider this to be a bull's trauma exploration. dorian and bull are visiting seheron, very bittersweet. bitter because of course, it's seheron, sweet because bull's got support, and he's not alone.

another country – and another fic from venndaai whose works are absolutely beautiful. not very long. it's adoribull, and i'm weak for time traveling. especially for meeting your loved one in the past. especially when it's this sweet and touching.

so shall it be – rather short bull x adaar, consists of a very technical approach to bondage while also being non-sexual. and it's just sweet!

also, there is some stuff i'm in the process of reading, but still enjoy and find interesting:

run home – i'm only starting reading that one, but i already know it's a high quality work that studies characters in-depth, bull x f!lavellan, bull is an adoptive father of a kid!krem, plus, it's little league au.

better angels – i'm still in the process of reading it, but so far i find it lighthearted and like writer's inquisitor and sense of humor. the plot of m!lavellan x bull losing their memory and trying to piece everything together seems interesting!

aneth ara – as it's easy to realize, i'm in the process of reading many fics. but whenever i see f!lavellan x bull exploration that's over 100k words, i just can't help myself. :) plus, i really like how it's written, it seems very well-built to me.

since it's bull, there's also a good chunk of pretty hot purely pwp stuff:

kindle and char and enflame and ignite – adoribull playing pirates. :) it's pretty lighthearted and sweet, very nice experience!

the summit shrouded in fog – this cullen x bull and x dorian will be your jam if you like more intense scenes. it explores how violent bull is and how it interacts with him being a dom among other things. that's actually not the thing i've seen discussed much before in various texts, so that's cool.

got 180 degrees (and i'm caught in between) – this is a pretty recent work on dorian x krem x bull, made me go !!! i just love krem very much.

come on, get higher – just wanted good ol' bottom!bull and i got it. this is adoribull. also, i know that justjasper created a big amount of works for adoribull in general, and afaik they all are worth checking out,

such as katoh, for example. a very touching compilation of moments between dorian and bull that are sharing the common theme of communication. i like when authors work with the watch word use, it's as important as a good scene.

rivers in the sand – i dunno how explicit it might be considered, so it goes here. adoribull, bull sees similarities between the seheron and the hissing wastes, definitely has a ptsd episode running as an app in the background. bonus points for dorian finding bull being a nerd hot because same.

anyways, thank you sooo much for asking and giving me a chance to rumble about fics i love about a character i love! sorry if i took the task way too seriously, haha. surely there can be much more even with my little experience of ao3, but i'll stop here.

I feel like this answer will change in the future, but for now: the orlesian drop; I recently reread this, and I think the pacing and the structure were good. I think I told the story with more control than I usually have when writing, which is something I'm trying to work on. I want to make sure that my original goal is preserved, because sometimes my idea gets watered down by the time I finish writing, if that makes sense?

I wrote a lot of one-shots this year, so I will keep this to WIPs/longer fics that I finished! And all Dragon Age, to no one's surprise:

Death to the Romantic Fool - I had a blast writing this for Templartations. (See, I did try to disguise myself with a Capitalized Title, lol!) Cullen/Josephine really snuck up on me, I think they make such a good pair, and there's a lot to think about with them.

the orlesian drop - Cullen/Trevelyan bodyguard/travelling performer AU. This was a WIP that I finished relatively quickly in terms of my writing speed--I think I was possessed by a vision, haha.

anatomy of a haunted heart - Nathaniel/Velanna time loop that I wrote for a Dragon Age Big Bang. The event kind of scared me because it combines a deadline with a large (for me) word count and you should not start writing til a certain point--I was afraid I wouldn't have the words when it was time, lol! But I'm really proud of myself for getting this done and happy with how it turned out.

dead winter in the forgotten land - an Alistair/Amell fic that I began maybe a year or two ago. I wanted to finish this one and I dragged it forward with me, gave it a good overhaul, and I love how it turned out.

cut down at the garden's gate - Sebastian/Hawke political marriage fic. This was for the WIP Big Bang, and I really think that it gave me the kick I needed to finish a story I had had in my head for a while. Again, this is a contender for one of my favorite fics from this year, only because it haunted me for so long and I can't believe it's finished.

18) current number of WIPs

You already know I'm insane so 15...ish? (Some have more momentum than others) I am finishing that rom-com inspired Sebastian/Hawke modern AU... I have a story idea where Ashna is the Inquisitor's sister, something a little different. A couple of Shepard/Miranda ideas, too. I think I want to go back and revisit the ideas that kind of lost some steam next year, and see if I can revive any of them. Maybe drag some others across the finish line, LOL.

New ideas? I'm a mild hockey fan, I think a hockey AU would be fun. No clue who I would put in it, though. I haven't been struck by the Veilguard bug yet, but I'm quite fond of Bellara and of Davrin. And I'd love to try something with horror, I love reading it but I've never been able to write it, but I think it's such a fascinating genre.

Hi! I've been reading your snippets of the baby au and, I'm sorry, but I have to ask you: how do you think jalice vampire parents would be different of jalice human parents? Of course it would be a completely different world without all the trouble about raising a fragile little kid being killing machines and all, but I wanted to know your thoughts on it. Also, I've seen you are surprised of how much people are enjoying and asking about babyfic, but you just made Alice and Jasper...Alice and Jasper from Twilight...as parents...It's so cute and unexpected and actually good????

Ooof, that's something I've considered and listen, it's hard to determine without knowing the upbringing and background of Jasper and Alice as humans. If we convert their canon background into contemporary equivalents, it's going to be messy.

Prepare for rambling.

In Hybrid, Alice has a very much 'challenge accepted'/'hold my beer' kind of attitude to life. Whatever happens, she's willing to roll with the punches; she's very straight to the point and determined. She'll be the first one to say that she absolutely wanted an abortion, but that wasn't on the cards so she had her son and loves him. And Jasper has never felt as old or as young as when he's faced with Alice and Ollie; he's done horrific things and now has the one thing that Esme and Rose want more than anything: a child. And for him, it's a gift and a curse. He is terrified of letting Alice and Ollie down, and he has this insane responsibility all of a sudden, but he loves them both so fiercely. Plus they have a great support network - Alice's dads are super supportive and heavily involved, and the Cullens only want good things for Alice and Jasper. And Peter would fucking decimate anyone who tried to mess things up for Jasper.

Maria's more amused than anything else.

As vampire/human, they also have insane resources that would save so much stress and give them the maximum amount of time with their son. They have more money than Bezos; they can have their own home, buy whatever they need, give Ollie the best education and opportunities. Jasper doesn't sleep, so Alice is well-rested. If they need childcare whilst they go to college, or on a date, there are half a dozen family members who are right there - three of them with medical training.

But on the flip side, Jasper is so far removed from humanity because of his age - and the fact he's frozen as a Civil War-era nineteen/twenty year old, there's a significant learning curve for him. Bluey? Pokemon? Fortnite? He's totally out of his depth and has to kind of let his son teach him about being human in modern day. (Alice has a pretty frank discussion with Jasper about their stance if Ollie comes out as LGBTQ+, and is relieved to find out that vampires have significantly less hangups about that then humans, and Ollie can identify and be whomever he wants to be forever.)

And - I can't remember if this already came up - Ollie isn't immortal. He's going to live a normal human lifespan with two immortal-ish parents (listen, Alice isn't going to live forever, either, but that's a whole other thing). So he's going to be 15, 21, 30, 40, 50 etc, with parents that look 19, who can't even 'be' his parents at his graduation or his wedding or the arrival of his children. He's going to be an old man on his deathbed, clutching his mother's hand and she hasn't aged a day; she has to pose as a grandchild or a niece. So I think that Alice and Jasper are intensely aware that they have limited time with Ollie and they need to hold those precious 18 years very close.

So that's the vampire side of the scale. But on the human side, we're working with a traumatized veteran and a young woman estranged from her family, who spent time in a mental health facility and was aggressively stalked. That's a fuck ton of trauma, most likely financial insecurity and a lack of education.

I would even pitch that the pregnancy was incredibly accidental and Alice probably didn't notice until she was three months along. It might have even happened very early in the relationship, to really stack the odds against them. I think this version of Alice would focus on the sunshine and happiness of a baby, and not the reality, and Jasper would never leave her just because she's pregnant. So it's kind of recipe for disaster that turns out that it works.

They would still treasure their child, but they would have so much more stress and uncertainty. There would be a lot more bad days, and I can see them being kind of 'van life' people and telling people it's for the experience, but it's more to prevent anyone from taking Ollie from them when things aren't going well, to make both Alice and Jasper feel safe. So it's a lot more isolated. They have no immediate family support, and their day-to-day life would be so much more uncertain.

It's Jasper losing his temper because of PTSD, and then disappearing for the night because he's so ashamed of himself. It's Alice having a breakdown in their tiny van bathroom, and trying to convince herself she's safe, she's not crazy, and the stalker can't get her anymore. It's half home-schooling Ollie because they move around so much, but it's a lot of beach time and camping and just doing their best.

If we add the Cullens in as found family - whether that's as friends they meet in a community they stop in, as an extended family of one of them, or as former foster parents or something - it gets a little happier, because as much as I like to riff on the toxic possibilities of the Cullens, in Hybrid-verse they are kind and supportive and close. So this version would see a very loving family who are struggling, young people who have been dealt a very harsh lot in life and are trying to raise their son. Alice would trust the Cullens first - though wary of Carlisle (and Rose or Edward, if they were doctors) - and have no issue accepting a little bit of charity from Esme. Jasper would be insanely wary, especially when it came to compulsory reporters and Ollie, but I can see Emmett kind of drawing him out, and the education of the Cullens appealing to Jasper and him beginning to aspire for better for Ollie's future.

When it comes to day-to-day child-raising, I think Jasper would be way, way more hands-on as a parent as a vampire because of the limited time of childhood, and the fact he doesn't need to sleep or eat or work - if Ollie wants to spend a whole day building a fort, there is nothing else Jasper has to worry about. Jasper is intensely invested in making sure Ollie is smart and safe and happy, so he's constantly reading parenting books, child psychology books, any kind of material that will make him a good father. He'd be playing catch with eggs every day for months to make sure he never, ever accidentally bruises Ollie; there would be sweaters and blankets all over the house to make sure Ollie isn't uncomfortable falling asleep against his shoulder, or getting cold when he wants a snuggle. And Ollie sees his dad as a hero, as a protector, as someone who can fix any problem. Going camping, building a treehouse, playing baseball - there is nothing Jasper won't do for Ollie.

Alice would have a special bond with Ollie, having that human experience - especially since Jasper is a hopeless cook. It's Alice making cookies with Ollie and making a huge mess. It's Alice who he gives his bad Halloween candy to. It's Alice who falls asleep with him when he crawls into his parents' bed. It's Alice who wipes up tears and puts on bandaids when he skins his knees.

On the flipside, things are a bit rougher in the potential AH verse. Jasper struggles with PTSD and holds himself back a little - he can read to Ollie, play boardgames and do outdoor things like surfing and camping, but he struggles with depression and PTSD, so he lashes out emotionally and isolates himself a lot.

Alice is erratic and ultimately, frightened of outsiders. She's dreadfully overprotective of Ollie incase CPS or her father tries to take Ollie from her for not being good enough. So there are a lot of nights where Alice sits up awake to make sure Ollie is safe as he sleeps - and she would never disturb Jasper's sleep because he has so few good nights.

Money would be tight, so food wouldn't be fancy - especially since both of them would be hopeless cooks. Jasper's meds, gas, and food would be their priorities and there would be a lot of days when Alice and Jasper went without to make sure Ollie got everything he needed. Things would get significantly better when the Cullens met them and gave them the love and support of a family, but they would never be hugely affluent. I think Ollie would grow up intensely aware of his parents' issues and shortcomings but would have learned from his upbringing to treasure the positives and the happy times rather than resent the hard and ugly parts.

So, tldr, I think that human/vampire parents would actually be a happier kind of version than the all-human version in my head. But honestly, what defines Alice and Jasper as characters is their complete devotion to the other, above all else. That would extend to their child, no matter how accidental that child was; I can just see the realities of human life creating a much harsher story with their backstories.
