Holy crap, I just happened to wander by and spotted that I suddenly seem to have 6,700 followers!! That’s unbelievable! June will mark 10 years since I rejoined the world of fanwork and fandom in general, and August will be 10 years since I got myself my humble little tumblr account. In that time, I’ve had or witnessed fights, dramas, mass unfollowings, death threats and invitations to off myself (yes, really!), but all that fades in light of all of the incredibly good things that have come with being a part of a fanworld again. My first fandom was Harry Potter, and JK Rowling ruined it for me, first with that horrific epilogue, secondly by constantly adding “facts” that she hadn’t actually written into her own canon, and thirdly, by outing herself as a massive transphobe and bigot, and it really soured me on things, so I wandered away. Then I discovered the massive acting skills of Benedict Cumberbatch, which brought me to the world of Sherlock, and here I still am a decade later. 

I just celebrated my very first fic in this fandom having reached 20,000 hits, and just yesterday someone just left me a comment on the second one, adding that they couldn’t believe I was still answering comments on it. I could have just as easily said (and I think I did!) that I can’t believe that people are still reading my stuff ten years on. And I’m still writing! I’m slower (read: busier!) than I used to be, rocking a full-time job and two part-time ones, which has really eaten into my writing time, but I promise, I’m still here and grateful to be! This world and the fine, fine people in it have literally changed my life and saved me more times than Sherlock and John have saved each other. I’m grateful. 

I have friends who would nag me to mention it, so here you go (you know who you are!!): I have a patreon, if you feel inclined. I'm coming back from the dead here, because after quite a few time without doing arts, I decided to return on my old loved hobby!

I openned an instagram account, but sometimes, I'm feeling quite mad about the insta art format. It drives me crazy. So I decided to come back here, and I'm quite happy to see that almost all the people I followed a few years ago in the Johnlock fandom are now in the Good Omens and Our Flags Mean Death one!

i had a question and i hope that it doesn’t sound rude. do you feel ashamed being in the fandom and being a shipper at 32? i ask because i am 27, and have been in the fandom since 2012, off and on. i haven’t rly been in it actively for the last two years or so, but when i want to come back, i feel embarrassed. i also don’t think i could handle the stress of it tbh! lol. i hope you are well <3

I was going to answer this yesterday but then remembered I had a 7 hour drive today and didn’t want to stay up later than I already was. Because I’m an adult, with (now one) previous multiple jobs, a pet, rent, vehicle, three post high school diplomas, and student loans, and there are many things in my life I get ashamed of, like when I answer “you too” when a cashier tells me thanks for shopping or when I let a whole bag of celery go bad in my fridge without ever cleaning or eating it. Shame? At my tax dollars funding death weapons and family members voting for strong men? Sure. Latent homophobic internalized shame from my upbringing? Yeah, sometimes.

But life is too fucking short to be embarrassed or hold shame about a FANDOM. Listen, I “ship” Johnlock, or Merthur, but Larry wasn’t a ship for me it was a discovery of queer joy. Like I’m so sorry but baby Larry was real. 100%, actually, seriously legit, like how else do you fucking explain any or all of that. We watched two boys fall in love with each other and okay we don’t know the devil or the details but we have how many albums and interviews, jokes made by media personalities etc, plus the fact that now, this many years later, their solo stuff is still haunted by a nauseating back and forth, these odd lyrical choices that are echoed in the other?

Yeah it’s not a ship. It’s a thing that happened, that we witnessed, and by virtue of it happening and us witnessing it something about gay love became dreamable, reachable, attainable, soft and puppy and exciting and wild. Their secret sign language and mimed blow jobs and jealous looks and touches when they thought there were no cameras, all those things made queerness not just something you saw on Glee. Not just something your parents talked about while wrinkling their nose up about ‘those people.’ It’s a generational thing, the world has moved on, we don’t NEED Larry anymore. And that’s okay. But we don’t need it because it happened. Not to be a brat but you exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you.

And yeah, we wrote fics about highly characterized and publicized versions of Larry, often inserting our own traumas or fantasies, creating a kind of gay mythos around this witnessed event from the periphery, from the lens of the consumer, the only lens we have. But I’m not ashamed of that. You think stories are only ever written about people that don’t exist? At some point you have to acknowledge that in our world, celebrities are the deities of our popular imagination. I could write a thesis, but before I get into the weeds, suffice to say Harry and Louis have created a world of what can be, unburdened by what has been.

Fluffbruary: Day 15

Drowsy Sherlock is John’s favourite kind of Sherlock. John just loves the pillow talk with him. It’s never declarations of undying love or sharing their deep, dark fears. Rather, it’s Sherlock sharing nuggets of his vast knowledge about the most varied topics.

For example, he tells John that a shrimp’s heart is in its head. Or that humans have tongue prints.

And John counters by telling him how British military tanks are equipped to make tea.

Once, Sherlock mumbled that the correct term for a hashtag is actually “octothorpe.”

John finds all of it amusing and weird, and endlessly endearing.

Aaaaalllrightio folks. Long post incoming, I’m about to get sappy probably.

First off, I just want to say a huge thank you to every single one of you. You all made this event possible by signing up and participating and baring with me when things went wrong or I had to push dates back or didn’t get things out quite when I said I would. I appreciate you all and I couldn’t’ve done any of this without your support.

This is the first time I’ve ever run an event like this, and the second time I’ve ever participated in one - although the first time was years ago, and I’d completely forgotten about it until this moment, so I’m not sure if it really counts - and I’m so so infinitely grateful to you all for sticking with me while I figured out the kinks.

I encourage you all to reach out to your Santa’s directly, if you haven’t already, it’s brought me so my joy to see how much you’ve all loved your gifts over the past few days and I’m sure they’ll feel the same.

A quick overview of what will happen going forward: within the next few days I need to make a couple last posts to wrap everything up, this will include (but is not necessarily limited to),

- a feedback form

- a list of links to every gift made for this event

- likely some updates to the pinned post

When we get closer to the end of the year, I plan on putting out a call for some more admins for the event, so keep an eye out for that in a while if you’re interested :)

Sherlock and CO

So you know I'm obsessed with BBC Sherlock? It doesn't stop there. I was reading fanfiction one day night when I came across the fandom tag 'Sherlock and Co'. I was intrigued and opened Podcasts to listen to it. I loved it instantly. It took me approximately a week to finish the 45 episodes available, and then I waited for the next ones. And every week I wait for the new ones.

Some memorable parts of the podcast for me (among many) are the parts that made me audibly gasp, causing my family to tell me to shut up and get off my phone. For example, when a shoutout was given to 'Professor James Moriarty' in Shoscome Old Place. I screamed and my sister thought I was dying. I love the modern adaption and how Sherlock and John are portrayed, and Mariana being the Mrs Hudson equivelent. I love the scene where Sherlock and John meet, and Sherlock has stabbed himself (for science, John!) to measure how excercise can relieve pain. I love it when they do weird things to get into places and to slove crimes, such as climbing trees or licking bedsheets or smuggling cats into performance venues. I love it when John's microphone breaks and they all turn into chipmunks, and when they do things together in Baker Street (and yes, I still hold out hope for a Johnlock canon adaption). This podcast, like BBC Sherlock, has also changed my life. it has made boring tasks like tidying and chores more exciting without being distracting (I used to watch shows while tidying). I listen on the way to school, and I leave early on Tuesdays to listen to the new episodes as soon as I can. And although my stupidly weird laugh gets me weird looks on the bus when something funny happens, it is always fun to walk down the street and see someone I know, and they ask me what I'm listening to, and I can grin and tell them that someone has just been stabbed or killed or similar. I like to watch the look of horror and fear cross their face.

I feel like Moriarty now, so on the subject, I cannot wait for him to properly appear on the podcast. I am the sort of person who loves Reichenbach angst so I await the podcast adaption eagerly.

Thank you, Sherlock and CO. You distracted me from watching the 13 episodes of BBC Sherlock on repeat, and gave me joy.

Hello hello fandom friend! I love love love your blog. Thank you for all that you do for the this part of the internet. I have a slightly subjective question: I know that there are SO many creative, wonderful, smartly written pieces. But in your opinion, what are the top 10 (or less, OR more :-)) most gorgeously written stories? Anything where the writing made you think JESUS CHRIST and absolutely blew you away. I know this will be a personal call. Feel free to use your own measures. (Most re-read, most haunted by, ones with lines you still remember 10 years on?) Thank you so much in advance!

What he doesn't know is that the 'Oo you're shiny and smart!' hormones wore off long ago, and now they're simply gay besties chatting about life, fashion, and, of course, John. But John doesn't know that, so when Irene appears in their life again just as they get called into a very personal case, he feels the sand start to shift beneath his feet and has no idea why. 

Luckily, Sherlock will always do what it takes to ensure John gets to solid ground, no matter the cost.

Do you respond to comments? Why/why not?

Yes, always and nearly always within 24 hours max. I love comments, they give me so much joy. Wether it’s an emoji or an elaborate analysis, I adore them all.

What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?

No angsty endings with me. Only one with an ambiguous happy-ish ending is “Until the final breath escapes” and I wrote this for Halloween.

What's the fic you've written with the happiest ending?

They all end happily and in Johnlock.

Do you write crossovers?

So far, none. Maybe one day when inspiration hits. (Actually, it has already hit twice but both concepts are very vague. Like very.)

Have you ever received hate on a fic?

No real hate. Some inappropiate or weird or rude comments but they have been few.

Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

When I feel like it, yes. It varies. I’ve written explicit porn as well as “vanilla” smut.

Not that I know.

I’ve had kind offers on three fics for translations but I don’t feel comfortable about this so I politely declined.

What's a WIP that you want to finish but don't think you ever will?

I have been struggling with “Every fairy-tale needs a good old-fashioned hero” for years now. It should have been my fourth fic but I got knocked out of the vibe back then and now I cannot find my way back although I have tried already two times. I still want to write it. I hate unfinished projects. About 12k written (maybe a third??) and the rest is partly plotted.

What are your writing strengths?

This answer is highly biased, of course. I can write suspenseful action scenes (comments confirm this). I can make readers laugh via funny scenes (comment-confirmed as well). Can write porn and fluff.  I generally think of myself as a versatile writer. And then I get imposter syndrome, like what am I even doing, self-taught writing in not my native language.

What are your writing weaknesses?

Writing long complicated nested sentences (I’m German. It’s the master language for long sentences) that are really too complicated in English.

Also, see above, I’m not a native speaker (although I count myself as fluent in English) but I write directly in English (no translations!). So, I have to look things/words up to check if they really mean what I think they mean.

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

Would only be comfortable with German, obviously. Or very easy/short sentences in French or Italian. Only if the fic really needs it.

What was the first fandom you wrote for?

BBC Sherlock. I started very late in my life with writing fic. (With writing anything at all, actually.)

What's a fandom/ship you haven't written for yet but want to?

Klance. Keith Kogane x Lance McLain of Voltron – Legendary Defenders (anime). My second beloved ship. I do not actually want to write for this because there is such a distinct lingo to the characters and techno-babble if one writes in canon and I could not mimic this.

What's your favourite fic you've written?

I am not going to choose! I am proud of every single fic.

Fluffbruary: Day 25

Looking back, it's funny, the way Sherlock manipulated the truth to get John to move in with him.

"Sometimes I don't talk for days on end." A blatant lie. He's always eager to share with John everything he knows and learns.

"I play the violin when I'm thinking." A half-truth. He does, but he didn't mention how he "plays" it (makes it screech) half the time.

Finally, the omissions. He didn't mention his experiments, or the indoors shootings.

Even if Sherlock had been completely truthful from the beginning, it wouldn't have changed anything. John loves his life with the madman.
