#a dark horn blowing

I've been reading an old copy of The Phantom Tollbooth to my girlfriend, and tonight we finished it. And just for fun I read some of the ads for other books at the end, and I found what may be the greatest book blurb in history.
A Dark Horn Blowing Dahlov Ipcar Far out across the sands stretching silver-white into the darkening bay, the cow was calling. That mourning, that sadness; it filled my whole soul with its sorrow. But there were words crying in the sound, and it was not the cow that spoke those words, but a small man with a horn standing by a long, black boat there at the edge of the tide. The cow's lowing became the dark horn blowing, and then it was too late Ââ if ever I could have turned back I could no longer. 'Here is a remarkable piece of fantasy; haunting title, magical opening chapter â I can promise you the rest won't disappoint.' Naomi Lewis
Everything about that is amazing. The author's name is spectacular. And whoever wrote that blurb has literary pretensions far in excess of their wordsmithing capabilities.
I tried to read it out loud, broke twice, gave it to my girlfriend, who then broke at how hard I was laughing. There were words crying in the sound, and it was not the cow that spoke those words.

a lot of my free time is spent listening to a podcast run and researched by a professor of genocide studies who went into those studies specifically bc in an attempt to escape the violence of his angry, alcoholic father he signed up to go off to war in afghanistan only to realize that the whole war and war in general is a) stupid & boring and b) a series of horrific war crimes that had made the civilian population deeply suspicious of him even tho His Morals Were In The Right Place (tm). when he got home and threw himself into being anti violence, joining anarchist orgs & studying theory & trying to understand why he was sent to the other side of the world to be traumatized for no good reason while traumatizing the local population with his very presence, his shithead father died & he found out that his father was Like That bc their family was chased out of armenia because of genocide and it kicked off a cycle of violence & anger in the men of his family. he absolutely lost his shit, got his degree in genocide studies, and moved to armenia (do not ask me how he convinced his wife to do this with him. heâs really open about every other aspect of his life except his wife and kids which is imo very valid).
all that to say, he has this interesting perspective of war in that he has this cultural trauma of being the victim of a horrific crime while also himself being the perpetrator of imperialism & serving in an area that had recently been the site of several horrific war crimes (really similar to tim oâbrien, who served in my lai several months after the massacre but didnât know the massacre had happened & pieced together what happened from the horrified whispers of the civilians & brags from soldiers). it makes him both hyper critical of soldiers who do terrible things & empathetic to soldiers who are forced from home to do terrible things & angry on behalf of civilians who are victims of war crimes. i have ragged on him for being Very Midwestern about certain things but his research is interesting & sad & well done, & itâs really made me think about my own place in The Greater World & every time the internet loses its mind over some aspect of history i am violently reminded that most people just look at history and go âbut MY SIDE was justified actuallyâ when thatâs such a BABY IDEA OF HOW HISTORY AND WAR WORKS.
#âthe allies were justifiedâ i do not think most people criticizing oppenheimer are japanese nationalists actually i think they just think#that the fire bombing of tokyo & dresden were war crimes which they objectively were.#i think itâs interesting how most people can acknowledge that some german soldiers were pressed in by force & mostly innocent#but canât keep that same energy for japan. and default to âall asians hold the same opinionsâ when faced with criticism#rani makes text posts no one will read#anyways the podcast is lions led by donkeys and if u find dark humor tacky donât listen to it bc he cracks a lot of jokes to cope#but itâs also funny bc he has a specific hate for rhodesia bc he got death threats from some white nationalists when he criticized them so#now every time rhodesia comes up he blows an air horn aksjdjdjd

The Devil's Wheel
The Devilâs Wheel
âIf you say yes,â said the Devil, âa single man, somewhere in the world, will be killed on the spot. But three million dollars is nothing to sneeze at, missus.â
âWhatâs the catch?â You squint at him suspiciously over the red-and-black striped carnival booth. Youâre smarter than he thinks you areâ a devil deal always has a catch, and youâre determined to catch him before he catches you.Â
âWell, the catch is that youâll know you did it. And Iâll know, too. And the big man upstairsâll know, I âspose. But whatâs the chariot of salvation without a little sin to grease the wheels? You can repent from your mansion balcony, looking out at your waterfront views, sipping a bellini in your eighties. But hey, itâs up to youâ take my deal or leave it.â
The Devil lights a cigar without a match, taking an inhale, and blowing out a cloud of deep, sweet-smelling tobacco laced faintly with something that reminds you of rotten eggs. If he does have horns, theyâre hidden under his lemon yellow carnival barker hat. He wears a clean pinstripe suit and a red bowtie. No cloven hooves, no big pointy fork, but you know heâs the Devil without having to be told. Though he did introduce himself.
Heâs been perfectly polite.Â
You know you need the money. He knows it too, or he wouldnât have brought you here, to this strange dark room, whisking you away from your new house in the suburbs as fast as a wish. Now youâre in some sort of warehouse, where all the windows seem to be blacked outâ or, maybe, they simply look out into pitch darkness, though it is the middle of the day. A single white spotlight shines down on the two of you.Â
âWait a minute, wait a minute,â you say. âI bet the man is someone I know, right? My husband?â
âCould be,â the Devil says with a pointed grin. âThatâs for the wheel to decide.â
He steps back and raises his black-gloved hand as the tarp flies off of the large veiled object behind him. The light of the carnival wheel nearly blinds you. Blinking lights line the sides. Jingling music blares over speakers you canât see. The flickering sign above it reads:
THE DEVILâS WHEEL
âStep right up and claim your fortune,â the Devil barks. âSpin the wheel and pay the price! Or leave now, and a man keeps his life.â
You examine the wheel.Â
The gambling addict
The doting boyfriend
The escaped convict
The dog dad
The secretive sadist
âThese are all the possible men I can kill?â You ask, thumbing the side of the wheel. It rolls smoothly in your hand. Then you quickly stop, realizing that this might constitute a spin under the Devilâs rules. He flashes a smile at you, watching you halt its motion.Â
âAddicts, convicts, murderersâ plenty of terrible options for you to land on, missus!â
âSerial wife murderer?â
âNow who would miss a fellow like that? I can guarantee that the whole world would be better off without him in it, and thatâs a fact.â
The hard worker
The compulsive liar
The animal torturer
The widower
The desperate businessman
The failed musician
The beloved son
âMy husband is on here too,â you say.Â
âYour husband Dave, yes. The wheel has to be fair, otherwise thereâs simply no stakes.â
âI know whatâs gonna happen,â you say, crossing your arms. âThis wheel is rigged. Iâm gonna spin it around, and itâll go through all the killers and stuff, and then itâs gonna land on my husband no matter what.â
âWhy, I would never disgrace the wheel that way,â the Devil says, wounded. âI swear on my own motherâs graveâ may she never escape it. In fact, take one free spin, just to test it out! This oneâs on me, no death, no dollars.â
You cautiously reach up to the top of the wheel and feel its heaviness in your hand. The weight of hundreds of lives. But also, millions of dollars. You pull the wheel down and let it go.
Clackity-clackity-clackity-clackity
Round and round it goes.Â
The college graduate
The hockey fan
The Eagle Scout
The cold older brother
The charming younger brother
The two-faced middle child
The perfectionist
The slobÂ
Your husband Dave
Clackity-clackity-clackity.
Finally, the wheel lands on a name. A title, really.
The photographer
âHmm, tough, missus, but thatâs the way of the wheel. But hey, look! Your husband is allllll the way over here,â he points with his cane to the very bottom of the wheel, all the way on the other side from where the arrow landed. âAs you can see, itâs not rigged. The wheel truly is random.â
âSo⌠there really isnât another catch?â You ask.Â
âIsnât it enough for you to end a manâs life? You need a steeper price? If youâre really such a glutton for punishment, Iâll gladly re-negotiate the terms.â
âNo, no⌠wait.â You examine the wheel, glancing between it and the Devil.
You really could use that three million dollars. Newly married, new house, you and your husbandâs combined debtâ those student loans really follow you around. Heâs quite a bit older than you, and even he hasnât paid them off yet, to the point where the whole time you were dating you watched him stress out about money. You had to have a small, budget wedding, and a small, budget honeymoon. Three million dollars could be big for the two of you. You could re-do your honeymoon and go somewhere nice, like Hawaii, instead of just taking two weeks in Atlantic City. You deserve it.Â
Even so, do you really want to kill an innocent photographer? Or an innocent seasonal allergy sufferer? Or an innocent blogger? Just because you donât know or love these people doesnât mean that someone doesnât.Â
The cancer survivor
The bereaved
The applicant
Some of these were so vague. They could be anyone, honestly. Your neighbors, your father, your friendsâŚ
The newlywed
The ex-gifted kid
The uncle
The Badgers fan
âMy husband is a Badgers fan,â you say.
âHow lovely,â the Devil says.Â
Then it hits you.
Of course.
The weightlifter.
The careful driver.
The manager.
The claustrophobe.
Your husband Dave lifts weights at the gym twice a month. You wouldnât call him a pro, but he does it. He also drives like heâs got a bowl of hot soup in his lap all the time, because heâs afraid of being pulled over. He just got promoted to management at his company, and he takes the stairs to his seventh-story office because he hates how small and cramped the elevator is.
âI get your game,â you announce. âYou thought you could get me, but I figured you out, jackass!â âOh really? What is my game, pray tell?â The Devil responds, leaning against his cane.
âAll these different titlesâ theyâre all just different ways to describe the same guy. My husband isnât one notch on the wheel, heâs every notch. No matter what I land on, Dave dies. Iâm wise to your tricks!âÂ
The Devil cackles.Â
âYouâre a clever one, thatâs for sure. I thought youâd never figure it out.â
âThanks but no thanks, man,â you say with a triumphant smirk. âIâm no rube. No deal. Take me back home.â
âAs you wish, missus,â the Devil says. He snaps his fingers, and youâre gone, back to your brand-new house with your new husband. âDonât say I never tried to help anyone.â

you live like Cinderella, used and abused by your so-called family, forced to work all day and live in the barn like a rat. you clean up after them every moment, doing all the chores and cooking all the meals. you're tired, so tired of the punishments that meet you for stepping slightly out of line.
one day, it goes too far. with a broken arm, you hobble back out to the barn, intent on one goal: to get revenge and escape this place.
there's a village witch, you see, who everyone detests. they throw food at her when she comes to the village and taunt her as she buys her groceries. you find your way to her house after dark, and knock on her door. when she sees you, it's as if she expected you, and she has a small stack of ingredients ready.
mix them together over a flame and chant these words, she says. this spell will fix what ails you.
you chant the words and stir the mixture. then, as instructed, you pour it out onto the floor. the whole barn turns red, bright red, and you wonder if you've made a mistake by listening to that old witch.
he appears in a puff of smoke, skin as crimson as the dawn sky, with a spaded tail that flicks like a cat's. he has many horns along his crown, and a snakelike tongue darts out as he regards you.
for what purpose have you summoned me? he asks. but all you have to do is show him your arm, and he understands.
he rains down punishment upon the family, turning their house to ash, sending his fire nymphs to chase and beat them. when the true monsters are burned and bruised, he aims to kill, but you stop him.
that's good enough, you say. you've had your revenge. but you see, he's infuriated at how you've been treated. he wants to end this, to bestow the final blow, but you convince him to let them live with their punishment.
then what else can I do? he asks. where will you go next?
you'll wander, you figure, until you find a new home. at least now you're free.
then I will wander with you. he's not ready to return to the other realm yet, not while you still need his help.
together, you abandon the village before anyone can discover what you've done. deep in the woods, though, there's nowhere to sleep except the circle of the demon's monstrous arms.
I promise I won't use my claws, he says, welcoming you into them. here, ensconced in him, you feel his cock emerge from that pocket at his groin. he doesn't move to use it, but you find you want him toâthis creature who saved you, who has helped you without asking for payment in return. he's marvelous, powerful, and strange. perhaps this is how you might reward him.
you spread yourself and slowly, sink down on that massive crimson cock. he groans as you take all of him, soaking up his need, coasting on a river of your desire. you begin at your own pace, until his lust grows overwhelmingâand then he throws you down to the forest floor, his eyes wild and red. now he fucks you harder, claiming you, owning you. you're mine now, he mutters, bringing you to your finish over and over again. he will eat your pleasure until there's nothing left, drowning in it.
when you're finished, you sleep; but soon he grows hard again, his craving for you having taken over. when you've restored your strength, he fucks you again, demanding that you never leave him. whichever realm you choose, he'll stay by your side.

MORE, MORE, MORE
â mammon x f!reader
syn: One orgasm is never enough for Mammon, heâs greedy for it. Well, heâs the Avatar of Greed after all. He lives up to the name, of course, proudly so.
18+ MDNI; explicit smut, unprotected sex, implied multiple orgasms, overstimulation, cervix fucking, demon fucking, implied cum eating, pet names (my sweetheart, my treasure, my darling) divider: cafekitsune.
word count: 1.2k
notes: this is a repost from my deactivated acc + now cross-posted on my ao3 !
âMaâah fuck. . ! M-Mammon, canâtângh!â âAah shit. . ! Just one more fâme, my sweetheart.â Mammon let out a heated gasp, his rosy lips parted before burying his face in the junction of your neckâsoft breaths ghosting over the sensitive skin of your sweaty neck. Your vision was met with his snowy strands that your fingers dug into, occasionally tugging at the roots, and earning groans from Mammon as he ploughs into your cunt.
âJust one moreâ you knew that was nothing but a blatant lie, especially coming from the greediest demon himselfâit was never just one more when it came to sex, sometimes Mammon would go to the extent where both of you were as overstimulated as you could get; silent screams as pleasure took over your bodies, the coil deep in your stomach snapping oh so deliciously that it was almost painful, his balls emptying the last bit of load he has after all the rounds.
Your head spun, the corners of your teary vision slowly filled with dark spots that disappeared as quickly as they formed. Youâve already came twice around his cock, and youâve lost count of how many times Mammon brought you to your orgasm with his tongue and fingers, so your body was already sensitive to any kind of touch.
You could feel your legs trembling as Mammon pushed and pulled his hard cock over and over again, the way your walls clamped around his shaft, allowing you to feel every ridge of it. It was sticky, damp, and stuffy.
The mixture of yourâs and his cum dripped out of your sopping cunt and down to the mattress, creating loud, wet noises that bounced around the walls of his room. Mammonâs heavy balls slapped against your sweaty skin, making a sticky mess down where the two of you connected.
His king-sized bed squeaked with each desperate thrust of his hips, the headboard repeatedly hitting the wall as if it was locked in a rhythmic curse.
Thud. Thud. Thud.
Mammon was sure his brothers could hear the deafening thuds of his headboard but he couldnât care less. Another strained groaned left his throat as you scratched your nails down his bare muscled back, hands running through an evident bump on itâhis wings were starting to come out. His horns were also becoming visible, the ebony spirals emerging from his snowy hair.
Mammon growled as he felt himself shift into his demon form due to the immense pleasure that washed over his whole body. He sunk his teeth into your shoulder, causing pleasurable pain to shoot up to your neck as his canines grew in size.
âAah. . Mammon . . !â âHaah! T-thatâs it, my treasure. . Moan for me.â
Mammon lifted his head from your neck, an evident deep crimson blush spread on his cheeks as he met your gazeâhis pupils were blown with lust, eyes also teary from the never-ending pleasure. Fuck, you could stare at his eyes all day; the way his blue irises faded into a golden yellow at the bottom, like the ocean meeting the citrine sky as the sun dips below the horizon.
Before you could close your eyes shut from the way Mammonâs blunt tip repeatedly hit your cervix, you noticed a faint flapping sound over the ringing of your earsâsomething slicing through the damp atmosphere of the room and blowing hot air. It didnât take you long to notice the full-grown pair of wings on his back, flapping with every eager thrust of his hipsâitâs bat-like structure proudly stretching out to reveal itâs entire length.
The white markings across his tanned torso were now evident too, Mammon was in his full demon form. It was always like this with him whenever he reached overstimulation, the immense pleasure his body held was too much that it often resorted to him unintentionally transforming.
His wings moved in synched with his hard thrusts, allowing him to pound harder and reach deeper into you. Mammon threw his head back, a heated gasp leaving his lips as he felt your walls tighten around him. A small, desperate cry of your name hung in the thick air before he buried his face near your ear once again.
Mammon let out shallow pants, incoherent sentences going straight to your left ear; he managed to stutter out a praise, his voice shaky, and breathless from all the fucking heâs doing. The sweet praise went straight to your cunt, and that was all it took for you reach yet another orgasm.
This time, it was significantly more intense than the previous ones mammon had given you. Your whole body trembled as the coil in the pit of your stomach snapped for the nth time that night, face contorting in raw bliss as your lips parted in a silent scream.
Mammon didnât even have to look at your face to know what you looked like as you came, heâs got in engrained in his mindâthe way your pretty eyes roll to the back of your head, swollen lips parted, brows tightly knitted together and tears rolling down your warm cheeks.
The thought of your erotic expression brought mammon to another climax shortly after you. His muscles turned taut, wings stilling in a stretch as he sheathed his cock deep inside you before cumming. He moaned into your sweaty skin, a string of curses leaving his throat as waves of pleasure fully consumed him.
The two of you fell into a unison, filling the room with nothing but lewd sounds as your bodies jolted from the after shocks of a mind blowing orgasm. Mammon held you tightâhis bare chest flush against your ownâto keep himself grounded from the immense pleasure.
You didnât know how he was still able to cum inside you with such volume, given how many times heâs orgasmed alreadyâMammon filled your cunt to the brim, swearing under his breath as a squelching noise came from your cunt, his seed seeping out and dripping down to his balls and the mattress.
He gave a few shallow thrusts to ride out both your orgasms before pulling out, a whine coming from you and Mammon at the loss of contactâhe watched as your hole dripped with his and your cum, biting down at his bottom lip.
How filthy.
âIâm far from being done with you. .â Mammon breathlessly laughed as he saw your eyes fluttering shut. You opened your lids to see that heâs made his way down to the apex of your legs, where all the mess was.
âMhm, Iâm going to suck this out of you.â
He gave an experimental lick at your sensitive cunt, causing you to instinctively attempt to close your legs. Mammon held your legs apart and gave you a smirk before diving inâyour hands flew to his spiralled horns, gripping them for your dear life as he shoved his tongue inside you.
âJust canât get enough of you, my darlinâ..â Mammon whispered against your skin. âMhmâaah! Yâso greedy, M-Mammon.â you moaned. He couldnât help but snicker at your response, a sense of pride swelling in his chest at the choice of your words.
âNow, Iâd be worried if I wasnât.â

Under Your Cold Fingertips
[ m!monster x fem!reader ]
a/n: bodyguard x protĂŠgĂŠe, fluff and smut, forbidden romance content: nsfw, oral (male and female receiving), p in v, pulling out
"I must rest here a moment, mistress."
The hollow sound of his voice under the helmet is very quiet. He's been walking next to your horse for a while, limping, but insisting he is fine. The snow gathered on his armor and his gray horns were decorated with little crystals.
"Of course!" You hastily unmount, sensing he is unwell.
His armor loudly clanks as he almost falls on the steps beneath the abandoned gate. You hear him breathe heavily and hot. As you look back the way you came, you see droplets of blood branding his every footstep.
"You are badly hurt!" you shout. "You fool, why didn't you tell me?"
He remains silent, his hot breath creating a fog around his head. Maybe you're imagining, but he looks like he's... shaking? Gods...
"Quickly, let's undress you," you order him and kneel in front of him.
"M-mistress..." his metal gauntlets clink as he jerks his arms upwards in shock. "What are you doing? You'll get dirty."
"Shut up," you retort. "I can wash my clothes and shoes. But I can't revive my most loyal bodyguard, can I?"
He doesn't say anything and let's you untie his boots. Meanwhile, he carefully releases buckles below his chin. He removes his helmet slowly but the metal still scrapes against his horns. He is a bit pale and has dark rings surround his eyes. If his sclera wasn't black, you're sure you would see how very bloodshot they are.
You suck air between your teeth. "Your bandages are soaked!" Trying not to harm him further, you carefully start unwrapping the bloodied material.
"Mistress, please! This is highly inappropriate."
You just shoot him a furious glance to shut him up. You barely know anything about wounds or treating them, but the gash is long and bleeding heavily. "This looks bad...", you utter.
"It's fine, I heal fastâ" Without waiting him to finish, you quickly get all the necessary things and with his help clean his wound. He hisses as the disinfectant slides down his skin.
"I'm so sorry," you whisper while dabbing around his wound. "You don't deserve this."
A large calloused palm covers your fingers. He is surprisingly gentle. He... never touched you like this before. "Mistress, your hands are cold." Wrapped by his clawed fingers, he brings your hands closer to his mouth and blows onto them. Warm air as white as fog twirls around your heads.
"Iâ" You wanted to say something, something funny or friendly probably, maybe even witty, but your mind went blank. Or rather, every sensible thought got pushed back by that one idea.
You push yourself between his legs and kiss him. Too shocked to react, he keeps his mouth open like a fish until he grabs you by your shoulders and shakes you. "What are you doing? You can't... We..." He trails off looking at your lips. "We can't..."
"You're bleeding for me and I can't even kiss you?", you ask in an almost growling tone.
Still slightly shocked, he opens his mouth to speak, reconsiders and kisses you instead, tightly embracing you against his chest. And his hard and cold armor but you don't care. All you want are his warm lips and his tongue to shove itself down your throat. But not only that...
You slide down between his legs again, happy that doesn't have heavy plates on his lower body (even though that proved a wrong choice this morning). You quickly loosen his pants and push your hand inside. "This is wrong," he mutters over and over but does nothing to stop you taking his heavy and strange cock into your hands. You always wondered how it looks like. And tastes like.
You take it into your mouth, followed by his low and breathy fuck, and you hum around it as you use your tongue to explore every part of it. Listening to your guardian's moans makes you wet and your cunt clenches around nothing every time he jerks his hips up and thrusts into your mouth. You lick his phallus all over, sucking his tip and tracing his veins until he grabs your wrists and pulls you on him.
You stand above him, many layers of your dress stopping you to make the next step. You lift your skirts and chemise around your waist. "Forgive me," he says before he rips your undergarments and reaches your pussy. He leans forward and slides his tongue along your folds, his nose digging into your bush and soft tissue. He is growling like a hungry animal, devouring your nectar and you tremble above him, panting and gasping as his tongue finds all your secrets.
He pulls you down, onto his lap and you drop all your skirts onto you two. They hide everything that happens between you two and keep you warm at the same time.
There is a strange expression on his face. "Mistress..."
You kiss him before he says something stupid, and guide his cock inside you. Slight pang of pain causes you discomfort, but you can't help but roll your hips looking for pleasure. His arms are under your chemise and his claws dig into your hips. You moan into each others mouths, your breaths and bodies pushing the cold away. You ride his cock and with his help you feel the pulses of your peak building up.
"I'm close", you sob into his neck and he grabs your ass so that he could lift you and fuck you from below. You breath hitches from the force of his dick digging into your cunt and you quickly come undone. He kisses you, savoring your delight, and slides into your pussy slowly but deliberately, prolonging your orgasm as much as he can. He then pulls you onto his chest and positions himself so that he can push his whole cock into you easily. In and out, in and out, faster and faster.
Some outsider wouldn't see a thing happening hidden under those long and dirty skirts. But you could feel the tension of his muscles and his cock swelling inside you. He suddenly pulls out by lifting you like a child's toy and, with a long groan, he cums all over your thighs.
"I wish I saw your cock twitching and spilling," you say while you lay against his breastplate.
Still breathless, he chuckles, but also groans in discomfort. You finally remember. "Your leg!" You jump off his lap and see his leg bleeding again. "You fool! Why did you put me on your lap."
Completely ignoring your scolding, he pulls you down again and you sit like before, your naked cunt against his groin. "Because I don't care about that pain. I dreamed about this for a long time."
"You dreamed about fucking me outside in the cold?", you jab.
He chuckles. "Not exactly in the cold." He kisses your neck and jaw. "But outside, and inside, and in your bed, and in my bed, and against a wall, and on the table, and on the floor, and against a tree..."
As he names all the places he imagined, your pussy throbs against his muscles. "All that sounds lovely. But let's get your leg fixed first before you bleed to death."
He places his forehead against yours. "At least I would bleed for the most amazing woman in the world."
You hit him in the chest, blush overtaking your cheeks. "Shut up, you... fool."

Cannibal, a noun: one that devours its own.
~~~~~~~~~~
Heâs back, you can feel it: a sensation like falling, the impact of Vhagarâs claws against the earth. You get glimpses like this, unpredictable flashes of intuition, a window into the contents of his mind or the scenery he is draped in like how branches hang from a willow tree. You set Blueberry down on the windowsill, where he skitters to the edge and swoops out into the night, chasing white specks of moths and lacewings. Then you leave your bedchamber to meet Aemond in the hallway.
One of the maids is there, trying to be patient as she paces with Maelor in her arms. Heâs just like you were at that age: a demon who never sleeps. His white-blonde hair is disheveled, his eyes rheumy and pink from crying in protest. But then they brighten.
âRed Red!â Maelor swipes at you with tiny, grasping hands.
âWhat are you doing awake?â you coo at him, beaming. âItâs nighttime. You arenât a bat. Are you a bat, huh? Are you hiding a pair of wings somewhere?â
He giggles as you pretend to inspect him. The maid smiles.
âIf you donât have any wings, Iâm afraid youâll have to go right to sleep. Thatâs the rule for humans.â
Maelor trills in his toddler lisp: âThen I want to be a bat.â
âOkay! Iâll find some bugs for you to eat.â
âNo!â he squeals, dismayed. âNo bugs!â
âIn that case, I guess youâre a human after all. If you go to bed now, you can help me collect seashells tomorrow.â
âFine,â Maelor agrees grudgingly, and the maid ferries him away. From the Godswood, great horned owls hoot. One of the knights of Aegonâs Kingsguard, Sir Willis Fell from the Stormlands, passes by on his patrol and gives you a quick nod, polite but a bit avoidant, awkward truths he pretends he can ignore. He doesnât ask if you need assistance or why youâre awake at this hour. He already knows. He vanishes again, his white cloak swishing behind him like the tail of a wolf or a jackal.
You lurk at the top of the Grand Staircase shrouded in shadows and shifting firelight, feeling night wind skate over your cheek like children playing on a frozen lake, and that breeze is not here but outside where Aemond must be trudging across the courtyard towards the royal apartments in Maegorâs Holdfast. You drum your fingertips impatiently on the stone banister. When at last he appearsâfirst only a silhouette in the darkness, then rippling into color under the torches, black leather and silver hairâAemond is drenched with rain and ascending swiftly, two stairs at a time.
You grin as you take a step down to him, slinking, conspiratorial. He told you all his plans before he left; he tells you almost everything. âHow was Stormâs End?â
But Aemond doesnât answer. He blows past you and stalks towards Cristonâs chambers, rainwater dripping from his hair and littering the floor with tiny, transluscent pools.
You turn to watch him leave, mystified. âAemond?â
He says without stopping: âGo wake Aegon and Mother. Tell them to meet me in the small council chamber. Iâll get Criston and Grandsire.â
âWhy?â Again, Aemond ignores you. This is unusual. You bolt after him, closing the space between you until your fingers catch his wrist. âAemond, whatâ?â
He grabs you and pins you to the wall, the stones cold against your belly through the crimson velvet of your robe, Aemondâs hips braced against yours, domineering, demanding, promising what he will do for you after. You close your eyes and sigh shakilyâa savoring, a surrenderâand then he is tender, turning your face so he can kiss the apple of your cheek. He murmurs, warm and low: âDo as I ask.â
You nod. âOkay,â you agree in a whisper. Aemond releases you and vanishes to rouse Criston. You break for Aegonâs chambers.
There is a woman in his bed, snoring softly and with long auburn hair spilling over her bare shoulders. He has endeavored to spend less time drinking and philandering since becoming king, and yetâŚit is so rare for a creature to change its spots or stripes or scales. Aegon has always been this way. Without his vices, you would not recognize him.
You kneel beside the bed and rest a palm lightly on Aegonâs damp forehead. You have to be careful when you wake him; he flinches, he startles, he has too many memories of being ripped from sleep by bruises and crescent-moon indentations of fingernails. âAegon? Iâm really sorry, I know itâs late.â
He doesnât have to open his eyes to know itâs you. âFuck off,â he groans into his pillow.
âAemondâs back from Stormâs End, but somethingâs wrong. He wants you to meet him in the council chamber.â
Aegon looks up and blinks drowsily. Moonlight spills into the room through gaps in the curtains. He smells strange, like lavender; that must be from his companion. âWhat happened?â
âI donât know.â
âHe didnât tell you?â
You shake your head.
Now Aegon is alarmed. The dark, cloudy blue of his irises is rapidly clearing. âAlright. Give me five minutes.â
âWash the girlâs perfume off you so Mother isnât quite so disappointed.â
Aegon chuckles, rubbing his eyes; something about the way he does this reminds you of Maelor. They are both just boys; they are both so incendiary and yet so vulnerable. âGet out, whore.â
You tousle his hair roughly, smack a kiss onto his sweat-salted temple as he tries to shove you away, snicker as he hurls pillows at you. You are slipping through the doorway when you hear the woman in bed mumble: âHuh? Whatâs going on?â
âNothing,â Aegon says. âThank you very much for your company, your skills were more than adequate, now kindly find your way homeâŚâ
You hurry down the hall to Motherâs chambers. There are seven-pointed stars on the walls and the furniture, green tapestries everywhere. She will always be a Hightower, averse to Valyrian oddities and suspicious of that sinister, ancient magic. She does not understand it; she tries to overlook it in her children. Itâs the only way she knows how to love them. You sit beside the indistinct shape beneath the blankets, sinking into the goose feather mattress, and nudge what you guess is her shoulder. âMother?â
She stirs, and then her face fills with concern when she sees you in the dim light from her candles. âWhatâs happened, darling? Are you ill?â You are prone to headaches and chills and nausea, you always have been, maladies of the flesh that are either a blood inheritance or a curse from bad stars. Once when you were very young, Aemond pushed you into a cold stream during a royal progress to the Vale, and you had been laughing when Criston leapt in and dragged you from the water; but two days later, you began burning up with a fever so hot they thought you might die. Aemond had slept on the floor beside your bed, and when you shivered so violently your bones ached he climbed in beside you and held you until you could sleep again; and later when his eye was cut out on Driftmark and he was half-mad with pain, you did the same for him.
âNo, Mother, Iâm fine. Itâs Aemond.â
She sits up and studies you. âAemond?â
âHeâs back from Stormâs End, and he wants to talk to you.â
âTo me?â
âAnd Criston and Aegon, and Grandsire too.â
She doesnât understand. âNow? Why? Whatâs wrong?â
âI have no idea.â
âWhat did he say?â
Everyone expects you to already know, but you donât. âI think he wants to tell all of us at the same time. In the small council chamber.â
âNow?â she says again, puzzled, still half-asleep. âWhat is so important that it canât wait until morning?â
âMother, there are only so many ways for me to express that I donât know. If I had any indications at all, Iâd share them.â
âAlright.â Sheâs smiling; you have amused her. She throws off the covers and touches her bare feet to the floor. âPass me my robe. Itâs on that chair over there.â And of course, the swath of velvet you hand her to wear over her nightgown is a deep emerald green: the color of fertile fields, not blood or beasts.
By the time you and Mother arrive together, everyone else is already taking their places in the council chamber. Aegon is at the head of the table, spinning his stoneâa black sphere of volcanic glassâand peering around boredly. Grandsire and Criston are greeting Mother and yawning into the backs of their hands. No one has woken Helaena, and yet she is here, settling nimbly into the chair beside Aegon. He gives her a brief, fond glance, noting that she is fidgeting with a small oak dragonfly he once made for her. Aegon carves wood, Helaena embroiders, you shatter seashells with tiny hammers and use the shards to make mosaics, miniscule yet unladylike violence. Aemond has books and swords in place of crafts. And DaeronâŚyou assume he must have cultivated some artistic talents while away in Oldtownâhe was always so imaginative as a boyâbut you would not know them. You see him so rarely now. You sit across the table from Aemond. He is the only attendee not dressed in nightclothes. His black leather tunic is still layered with a sheen of rain.
Grandsire lowers himself gingerly into his seat, grinding arthritic bones that pain him. The nights have grown chilly, even here in the south. Winter is coming, the maesters warn. His gaze passes over you and Helaenaâthe two of you arenât really supposed to be here, but youâll be permitted to stay if you cause no troubleâthen he smirks humorlessly at Aemond. âSo you failed.â
âNo,â Aemond says, and you think as you look around the table: No Orwyle, no Lannister, no Wylde, not even Larys Strong. What does Aemond not want them to know? âLord Baratheon has agreed to marry his youngest daughter to Daeron in one yearâs time. He was very enthusiastic about the match.â
âGreat!â Aegon declares. âAlthough, personally, I am of the inexpert opinion that this could have been discussed over bacon and honeycakes at breakfastâŚâ
Grandsire snorts, derisive; he disapproves, though perhaps he is not surprised. He says to Aemond: âYou were sent to negotiate your own marriage, not Daeronâs.â
Aemond shrugs, as if it happened by coincidence. âThat was Borros Baratheonâs preference.â
âIt was your preference, you mean.â
Aemond is careful not to reveal any emotion. âDaeron is young, but he already has a reputation. He is known to be handsome and chivalrous andâŚâ A wave of the hand as he searches for the right word. âUnmutilated. It is not so difficult to imagine why a father would believe him to be a more worthy son-in-law.â
âIt doesnât matter to me, one Targaryen is as good as the next,â Aegon says, and of course nobody pays much attention.
âPerhaps Borros Baratheonâs judgment has been contaminated by certain disturbing and disgraceful rumors,â Grandsire counters and glares at you. You donât reply; thereâs nothing you can say that would help. Everyone knows, but it rarely spoken of aloud, as if it is a ghost nobody wants to inadvertently conjure. All your life there has been this perpetual rebalancing of scales: someone mentions a diplomatic match for you, you stall and Aemond makes excuses, Grandsire and Mother try to convince him, Aemond is immoveable and they arenât willing to invoke his wrath. Vhagar is the subtext of every dispute. They need her, they are terrified of her.
Criston attempts to deescalate. âAemondâs task was to ensure the Baratheonsâ loyalty to the crown, and he has accomplished that. Perhaps it would be wise to move on.â
âFine, what else?â Grandsire snaps. âYou assembled us here for some reason, I presume. It must be urgent to merit a meeting now. It better be urgent, or Iâll be paying people to shake you awake during the hour of the wolf for the next month.â
âIt is urgent,â Aemond says softly, then pauses, gazing down at the ball in front of him, white quartz dappled with blue. Everyone watches him. You share a glance with Aegon; he is curious, but you have nothing to offer him. You turn back to Aemond with bewilderment in your face, furrows in your brow.
âAemond?â Mother prompts.
He looks at you, only for a second, but youâre thunderstruck by what you see in his remaining eye. You have rarely known Aemond to be afraid, but he is right now. What happened? you think, horror making the blood in your veins cold and slow and heavy. What did he do?
Aemond begins: âLuke Strong was at Stormâs End too.â
âWhat?â Grandsire says, more baffled than worried. âThat runt? Why?â
âHeâs a weasel,â Aegon mutters, spinning his ball again.
âRhaenyraâs son?â Mother asks. âShe sent him there all alone? How peculiar. The way she was always hovering over him while they were here, Iâm amazed she let him out of her sight for that long. How old is he now? With that plain, ever-anxious, pug-nosed face, he looks like a little boyââ
Aemond says: âHe was sent to remind Borros of his old pledge to uphold Rhaenyraâs claim. But Luke had no incentives to offer.â
âAnd so Lord Baratheon rejected him,â Grandsire surmises.
Aemond nods, though perhaps halfheartedly.
âWell, good,â Grandsire says, surveying the table for agreement. âThatâs good, right? With every house that refuses to aid her, Rhaenyra will be more likely to accept our terms, and we can resolve this question of succession without any bloodshed.â
âMeleys and the Dragonpit,â Aegon reminds him.
âWithout further bloodshed,â Grandsire amends.
Mother and Criston concur, but youâre watching Aemond. He hasnât responded yet. Motherâs gaze flits between the two of you. She is somewhat sympathetic to the affinity you share, but she doesnât understand it. More than anything, you get the sense she believes it is something you must be saved from. The Hightowers could stomach Aegon and Helaenaâs matchâViserys was still healthy enough to insist upon it, and the couple so seemingly platonic it was easy to forget they were married at allâbut they have no appetite for a desire that defies political expediency, that burns scorching and wild.
âAemond, did you quarrel with Luke?â Mother says, her tone patient in an I-wonât-be-mad-if-you-just-tell-me-the-truth sort of way. âI knowâŚyour eyeâŚâ She touches her own face, wincing at the memory of how he suffered. âDid you seek restitution of some sort from him? Did you make accusations?â
âWeâŚexchanged some words,â Aemond admits. âAnd thenâŚwhen Luke left on ArraxâŚâ There is a lull, and everyone stares at him. âVhagar and I followed.â
âWhat?!â Grandsire exclaims. âYou threatened Rhaenyraâs son?!â
âIâŚâ Aemond closes his eye, then after a moment opens it again and continues. âIt was my intention to frighten him, that was all.â
âIdiot,â Grandsire hisses. âYou know better. Youâre too well-educated to act like you donât. Now, that oneâŚâ He jabs an accusatory finger at Aegon, who is caught off-guard, what the fuck do I have to do with this?
Criston says, more gently: âThat was very dangerous, Aemond.â Mother covers her mouth with one hand and shakes her head. Her long coppery hair hangs in uncombed waves, still tangled from sleep.
âSo what happened?â Aegon asks. âWhereâd you chase him to? All the way back to Dragonstone? You must have scared him to death.â
Aemond chooses his words with great care and agonizing slowness. âEverything was under control. Then ArraxâŚhe unleashed his flames on Vhagar, and sheâŚshe attacked.â
Everyone is silent. After a moment, Grandsire says: âWhat do you mean she attacked?â
âSheâŚâ Aemond gestures vaguely with open hands, hands that have held you, caged you, dragged you, pleased you until you were forged to him like a blade to a hilt. Again, he looks at you, and what is he asking for? Help, empathy, compassion, forgiveness? âShe bit Arrax.â
âShe wounded him?â Aegon says.
âShe devoured him.â
Criston blinks. âSoâŚArrax is dead, and where is Luke now?â
Aemond laces his fingers together on the table like heâs praying. âHeâsâŚheâs gone.â
âGone?â Mother echoes.
âDid you look for him?â Grandsire demands. âI mean, did you even bother to search for Luke, or did you just leave him in the Stormlands somewhere? Did he fall into the sea, could he be wandering around in a forest? If Luke is injured, we should send out people to find him. We could hold him as a hostage.â
âNo, you donât understand.â Aemondâs voice is frayed. And now for the first time tonight, you finally know what heâs going to say. Your eyes snag on Aegonâs, and he reads the terror there, and then it hits him too. âThere is nothing to search for.â
Mother is gaping at him, the unwanted knowledge seeping in like rain through earth. âNothing?â
âThere is no body. Pieces, perhaps.â
Unspeakable, suffocating dread fills the room, and then Grandsire leaps to his feet and slams his fists down on the table. âUseless!â he roars at Aemond. âWorse than useless, a saboteur, a curse, a plague, you have ruined everything your Mother and I worked for, Rhaenyra was considering our terms and now youâve condemned us all!â
âYou killed Lucerys Velaryon?â Mother says, stunned. Her large dark eyes glisten with unpardonable betrayal. Sheâll never look at him the same way again. âYou murdered Rhaenyraâs son? A prince, the heir to Driftmark?â
âIt wasnât murder,â Aemond pleads. âIt wasâŚit was combat, it was a battleââ
âA battle with that child?!â Grandsire thunders. Helaena begins to cry, and Aegon places a hand on her wrist as his wide eyes dart around the table. âEveryoneâs seen him, itâs no secret, and not a single person in the realm would be delusional enough to believe a clash between Vhagar and Arrax was anything but a slaughter!â
âAemond,â Criston says quietly, appalled, astonished.
Aemond canât meet his eyes. He peers down at the table, and despite everythingâwhat will happen to us, what will happen to me?âthere is an ache in your chest like cracked ribs trying to heal, a profound lightless distress, a ricochet of the pain heâs feeling. âIt wasnât my intention to harm Luke.â
Grandsire shouts: âDid you give Vhagar the order or not?!â
It feels like a long time before Aemond answers. âNo.â
âOh gods,â Criston says as he sinks down in his chair, turning to Alicent. She has hidden her face with both hands and seems to be weeping.
âSo you canât control Vhagar,â Grandsire seethes. âYou ride the largest and most dangerous dragon in the world and you canât stop her from eating people.â
âI never would have purposefullyââ
âBut you created the situation! You pursued Luke, you tormented him, and surely somewhere in your sick brain you considered that you were endangering his life! And now⌠nowâŚnow Rhaenyra will be merciless, she will never submit, she will endeavor to destroy us all!â
âIt will bring more allies to her side,â Criston says. âThey will believe she was wronged, and she will wield that weapon to great advantage. She is cunning.â
âWhat about your family, Aemond?!â Mother sobs, her face a hectic, bloody pink. âYou and your brothers will have to go to war, you might be maimed or butchered, and your sisters and IâŚwe could be taken as prisoners, we could be executed for treason!â
âThat will never happen,â he swears; but his pale blue eye is misty, and he bites his lips together so they wonât tremble.
Mother is desperate, tears streaming down her cheeks âWhat can we do, Father? How can we salvage this?â
Grandsire points to you. âShe must be wed immediately. Weâve already waited too long.â
âWait, wait, wait,â Aegon says, but no one is listening.
âMother,â you beg. âPlease donât let themââ
âShe will be married to whoever can help us in this,â Grandsire says. âThe Lannisters or the Redwynes or the Swanns, perhaps the Butterwells or the Mootons if that will coax them to our sideââ
âThen the realm will burn,â Aemond replies darkly, leaning over the table. âBut Iâll come knocking on your door first, Grandsire.â
Grandsire looks at him, startled. âYou wouldnât dare.â
âShall we find out?â
âOtto, please,â Criston says, holding up a palm. Then he considers how to dissuade him. âAll things consideredâthe military strength that Aemond has brought to our side, the devotion that he has shown this family, present circumstances notwithstandingâhe has never asked for much.â
âHe asks for the one thing we cannot give him,â Grandsire replies, then turns to you. âWhat do you think about what Aemond has done? This recklessness, this monstrous error?â
He rarely asks for your opinion about anything. This is not a question but a summons: you are supposed to disavow Aemond. You are the one who can hurt him best. Instead you say, though itâs not what you truly feel: âLuke was an enemy. He perished in combat.â
Grandsire, Mother, and Criston all begin yelling at once. Helaena shrinks into herself, her dragonfly made of oak wood clutched to her chest. Aegon whispers something to herâyou can leave, you believe he saysâbut she shakes her head no. You are stoic as the adults berate and implore you, and perhaps itâs strange that you still think of them that way since youâre an adult now too, and yetâŚtheir gravity seems so much heavier than yours, their tethers to the earth overgrown with weeds and moss.
âIâll gut you myself!â Grandsire screams at Aemond, empty threats woven from helpless terror. âIâll lock you in the Black Cells, Iâll have you banished to Dorneâ!â
âIâll throw a feast!â Aegon says suddenly, and the others go quiet.
âYouâll what?â Grandsire snarls.
âLittle Luke Strong is dead and thatâs a victory for our side. Thereâs no other way to look at it.â
âYou intend to celebrate this calamity?â
âWhat else should we do?â Aegon asks. âApologize? Go crawling on our bellies to Rhaenyra for forgiveness? No, sheâd burn us alive. If itâs done, we must embrace it and use it to bolster our cause as much as possible. It was a battle and a victory. Aemond is a war hero. Onto the next objective.â
âWhat a disaster,â Criston mutters, rubbing his forehead. âYes, that might be the only option we have.â
Mother clasps the small seven-pointed star that hangs from the gold chain at her throat. âI must go to the sept. I must pray for our survival.â
Grandsire glowers at Aegon. âYou are a humiliation.â
âI am the king. I want a feast.â
Grandsire sighs deeply, pushing his chair away from the table. âI suppose I have letters to write.â And then, to Aemond: âWhen your sisters are captured and enslaved and married off to whichever Black loyalists will pay Rhaenyra and Daemon the most for them, I trust youâll remember whoâs responsible.â
Aemond gets up and storms out of the small council chamber. Mother mops the tears off her face with the sleeves of her green robe. Criston takes one of her hands and is murmuring promises, assurances, perhaps lies. You, Aegon, and Helaena say nothing. None of you can defend what Aemond has done, but you wonât denounce him either.
Then Grandsire grins at you, a cruel bestial flash of his teeth, an old grizzled animal tough from too many winters, icy wind shrieking through the chambers of its heart. âOh, are you pretending that youâre not about to run after him?â
You donât reply. But you rise from the table and flee as Mother watches you, her vast eyes swimming with misery.
~~~~~~~~~~
Itâs a game with five pieces: the green snake, the yellow butterfly, the blue wolf, the red bat, and the purple shadowcat. They chase each other around the board, and if one of the other pieces lands on the same spot as yours then you have to go all the way back to the start.
Daeron is the youngest, but he almost always seems to win; some people are like that, luck flows like a river in their veins. Helaena enjoys playing even if she finished last. Aegon feigns disinterest but never declines an invitation, sliding his snake across the spaces with his index finger between slurps of wine. And sometimes Aemond is ruthless, taking every single opportunity to land on your spot and send your bat hurtling back to the beginning, sawing your legs out from under you, shattering your hopes like glass again and again until you are so frustrated you can feel embers glowing dry and searing in your throat.
But other times, Aemond pretends to misread the dots on the dice so he lands either too close or too far away and you are spared, and if you win he lies and says you deserve it.
~~~~~~~~~~
He is waiting at your bedroom door; when you are close enough to breathe him in, you taste rain and soot. Perhapsâif it isnât your imaginationâyou can even detect the coppery tinge of blood, splatters of little Luke Strong soaked into the black leather of his tunic or his coat. You remember that boy you barely knew, more a phantom than flesh, a wraith who stole Aemondâs eye and then was spirited away to Dragonstone to escape retribution, a tiny god who Viserys worshipped from afar the same way he never stopped loving Rhaenyra. All you knew of your father was absence, and this was a sadness but a relief as well, because you could not escape the sense that if he was there you would only disappoint him.
âWhat is wrong with you?!â you whisper savagely. Aemond smiles and reaches for your face, but you swat his hand away. âDonât fucking touch me. Youâre insane, youâre going to get us all killedââ
He drags you into your bedchamber, kicking the door shut behind him. Heâs lean but wiry, all muscle, and when you fight himâalthough you both know you want him to winâit is in vain. He tugs your hair out of its braid and hauls you across the room, pushes you down on the bed, rips off his coat and tunic and then follows you onto the mattress. You clamber away until you hit the headboard, your spine flat against the wood. As he closes in on you, your palm cracks across the blind side of Aemondâs face, and he grins. You have often thought that it should have been reversed, you wed to Aegon and Aemond to Helaena. You would not be so scandalized by Aegonâs vices; Aemond would be chivalrous with a meek, compliant wife. But alas, Helaena was born first, and the arrangement was set in stone long before any of your natures became apparent.
Aemond unfastens your robe and reaches under your nightgown of white cotton. âOpen your legs.â
âNo.â It is always this way with him; it always has been. You fight and he vanquishes, and both of you enjoy it.
He forces your thighs apart and you moan, the resistance bleeding out of you, you muscles going soft and yielding, Aemond radiant with this clandestine conquest on a night when nothing else is under his control. He can only love you when youâre tamed and tractable. Sometimes you think he likes that you donât have a dragon, that your egg never hatched, that all of the unclaimed beasts denied you. You will always be vulnerable, powerless, at his mercy.
You cling to Aemond, your arms around his neck. He knows exactly what you need because youâve already done this, more times than either of you could count: everything besides what could get you pregnant, and not just because Aemond would rather slit his own throat than have bastards like Rhaenyraâs. Itâs something youâre both saving until at last you are married, and no one except The Stranger can separate you.
You gasp and Aemond growls through your hair: âShh. Hurry up.â
âI missed you.â
âI know.â He doesnât have to say it back; if he hadnât missed you, he wouldnât be here right now, two fingers buried to the knuckles and the heel of his hand grinding against you, almost, almost, almostâŚ
The bedchamber door bangs opens, and Aegon saunters in with a goblet of wine, emeralds gleaming on the rim.
âStop,â you tell Aemond, but he knows you donât mean it, not really; beneath your nightgown his hand works faster, more roughly. You sigh and kiss him, deep and messy, surrendering, very close.
Aegon takes a swig of wine, licks the stray drops from his lips, and frowns down at you both, slightly intrigued but mostly nauseated. He cannot fathom a hunger for his own.
Aemond looks to him and says casually: âDo you want something?â
âI do, actually,â Aegon replies. âWere you planning to thank me?â
âThank you for what?â
âFor what I did for you in the council chamber, obviously. For the feast.â
âIâll consider it.â
âThank you, Aegon,â you say, and you are sincere.
Aegon raises his goblet in a mock toast. âThatâs very kind, Red, but I wasnât asking you.â
You whimper against Aemondâs throat, embarrassed but in ecstasy, not able to hold off much longer. âAemond, just thank him.â
âWell Iâm a bit preoccupied at the moment.â
âThatâs okay,â Aegon says. âI can wait.â He sits at the end of the bed, then bounces up and down a few times. âOh, this is a great mattress! Very soft, like sleeping on a cloud! Why isnât mine this nice?â
âProbably because youâve ejaculated all over it five thousand times,â Aemond says.
âOh, right,â Aegon jests. âNot quite that frequently, I think.â
âAemond,â you plead breathlessly. âJust say thank you. Get rid of him.â
Aemond sighs and, with his hand still beneath your nightgown, turns to Aegon. âThank you.â
Aegon smirks, mischievous. âAnd how will you repay me?â
âBy overcompensating for your shortcomings in order to ensure the enduring success of our family, as I have done since birth.â
âOf course,â Aegon says, though a bit distantly.
Aemond glances down at you and then asks his brother: âWere you hoping to join us?â Itâs not a serious question; if Aegon ever tried to touch you with genuine desire, Aemond would break both his arms. Fortunately, Aegon is the closest thing youâll ever have to a real brother, and thus his limbs are safe.
Aegon chuckles and stands. âNo, this is a bit unsavory, even for my taste.â He gulps the last of his wine and says as he leaves: âEnjoy, freaks.â
âBye, Aegon,â you call, laughing. He waves and then closes the door behind him.
Seconds laterâtwenty, thirty, time evaporates like mist burned away at dawnâAemond is making you come, and then you are yanking off his trousers and taking him in your mouth, and when you do this he always has to be touching you, smoothing back your hair, telling you how well youâre doing, and even though he warns you so you can pull away if you choose to, tonight you swallow every last drop of him and think of the sea that Lucerys Velaryonâs scraps tumbled into, the mineral bite of salt and metal and blood.
But when he finishes, Aemond doesnât collapse like a dead man as he usually does. He throws you onto your back, licks and nuzzles his way down your breasts and belly, parts your legs and murmurs against the inside of your thigh before he begins again: âI want you, I want you, I want you, I canât wait much longer.â
~~~~~~~~~~
Itâs one of your earliest memories. You are in the garden, and itâs a blazing hot day, and a million varieties of blooms cut through the greenery: goldenrods, orchids, lilies, irises, daisies, bellflowers, red roses, blue forget-me-nots. Butterflies whirl in the air and land on Helaenaâs outstretched fingertips. Grandsire is slapping Aegon and calling him an imbecile for trying to pet a bumblebee, and Aegon is wailing: But itâs fuzzy! Why canât I hold it?!
You must not be very steady on your feet yet, because Aemond is pulling you up by both of your hands and asking: If I ran, do you think you could catch me?
Yes, you had said, and then youâd staggered after him as he darted into the foliage. Under the shade of blossoms and shrubs that towered so much taller than you, you tripped and fell and scraped your palms, one of them bleeding from striking a pebble. You cried out, but no one was there to pick you up: no Mother, no Criston, no Helaena or Aegon. You wept pitifully, thinkingâas children doâthat you would be lost forever, that you would never see your family again.
But Aemond came back for you, and he studied your bloodied palm, carefully plucking out every grain of brown soil; and then he kissed it, held it against his cheek, painted himself with the scarlet ink of your arteries and veins.
See? he had said, smiling so you knew everything would be okay. Now weâre both red.
~~~~~~~~~~
âHow are the babies?â Aemond asks when he arrives, dressed for the feast in a green tunic embroidered with shimmering gold threads in the shapes of dragons, flying, shrieking, breathing fire. Helaena made it for him, of course. Each of you have wardrobes full of garments sheâs sewn, a collection of Aegonâs woodcarvings scattered around your rooms, seashell mosaics hanging from walls: insects for Helaena, Sunfyre for Aegon, heroes from myths for Aemond.
You grin over your shoulder. âCome see them.â
Itâs dusk now, so they are leaving the roost you keep in one corner of your bedchamber, covered with dark velvet to blot out light and sound as they slumber. Aemond kneels beside you and holds out his hand so River can scurry from your palm into his, clawing with his hooklike appendages. All of your bats are named after blue thingsâBlueberry, Sailfish, Clear Sky, Bluejay, Misty, Dragonfly, Lagoon, Lightning, Kingfisherâjust as Aemondâs hawks and war horses are given names like Fox and Rusty and Cherry and Pomegranate. He is the only one who defends your pets when Mother threatens to banish them back to the Godswood or the seaside cliffs. You have no dragon; you must find solace with some other creature that inspires dread and revulsion. But you think theyâre beautiful, and strange, and fearless, and wrongly unloved.
âLetâs move things along,â Aegon says as he appears in the doorway, wearing all green except for the Conquerorâs crown. âNo one can dig into the roast boar until the guest of honor enters the Great Hall. So I need Aemond to show up immediately.â
âAlmost ready,â Aemond replies without looking away from River, who is now scrambling up his forearm. Lighting takes flight and attempts to land on Aegonâs shoulder; Aegon yelps and flings him away.
âNo, you canât!â you say, rushing across the room to scoop up Lightning and cradle him in your arms. Fortunately, he is unharmed. âI told you, Aegon. They have tiny bones, you have to be gentle or youâll hurt them.â
Aegon shudders. âTheyâre fucking disgusting. Rats with wings.â
Aemond sets River on the windowsill, goes to his brother, shoves him hard; Aegonâs back hits the wall. His crown is knocked from his head and clatters against the floor.
âIâm not apologizing,â Aegon insists. âIâm a victim of grave injustice. I was attacked. That thing could have bitten me.â
You say to Aemond in High Valyrian: âShould we do this for a while to annoy him?â
Aemond smiles. âYes. We should talk a lot. A great amount, we should talk. Very much talking.â
âHey, hey, stop that,â Aegon says.
âAemond, what else will they serve besides boar?â
âI heard something about pies.â
âWhat kinds of pies?â
âWho knows. Maybe apple, or cherry, or plumâŚâ
âOh, I adore apple pies. Perfect for autumn. I could eat them all day.â
âI could eat you all day.â
âDonât tease me, or weâll never make it to the feast.â
Aegon is distressed. âI mean it! Stop!â
âThey arenât saying anything important,â Helaena assures him as she swishes into your bedchamber wearing a butter yellow gown. In her hair are gold pins shaped like ladybugs.
âOkay, but what are they talking about?â
Helaena says matter-of-factly: âSex and pastries.â
Aegon groans and rolls his eyes. âWhy did I ask. Okay, time to go.â
You walk together to the Great Hall, where Helaena and Jaehaera and Grandsire will dance in the center of the floor, and you and Aemond will whisper in shadowy corners, and Mother will peer around worriedly with her large watery eyes as Criston yearns to console her, and Aegon will smile patiently and never scold Jaehaerys when he gets underfoot or spills his pomegranate juice.
~~~~~~~~~~
Itâs another game, or maybe itâs a ritual; you are a little girl again, and every once in a while, without any warning, Aemond will shove you into a closet or a heavy wooden trunk and lock you inside. You will scream and pound on the door, but no one will hear, and you will spend what feels like hours alone in the darkness, wondering if this will be the time when you are not discovered until you have died of thirst and hunger, until there is nothing left but bones.
Then you hear approaching footsteps and Aemond lets you out, and when you strike and scratch at him he embraces you fiercely, like heâs a soldier whoâs been away for a year or more; and he holds you until you stop fighting it and your heartbeat goes quiet in your chest.

lando norris x reader
Request: Imagine reader feels like she hasnt spent time with Lando in a couple days so she starts leaving fluffy and funny notes around their apartment for him thank youuuu
It felt like it had been days since youâd last properly spoken to your boyfriend.
Despite you both being in the same city, your shared apartment may as well have been a flatshare with strict agreements to never be in the apartment at the same time. Due to conflicting schedules, it seemed that as soon as Lando arrived home, you were rushing out the door to work. When you pulled into the driveway, Lando would be pulling out, giving you a cheeky beep of the horn and blowing you a kiss as he went.Â
By the fifth day that went on like this with no end in sight, youâd had enough. A small stack of colourful sticky notes on the kitchen counter caught your eye and you hunted around for a pen, putting your plan into action.Â
Lando arrived home with a sigh. The apartment was dark and quiet for 8pm, but with the hours you were currently working this wasnât out of the ordinary. He kicked off his sneakers and padded into the kitchen, frowning as his stomach growled. Heâd finished all his carefully prepped, diet-abiding meals for the day, but maybe a snack couldnât hurt? As he flicked on the overhead light a small post it note in his favourite bright yellow colour stuck to the fridge caught his eye. It sat between a few fridge magnets and a strip of photobooth pictures of the two of you, you sitting on Landoâs lap and pulling a silly face as he grinned widely. He smiled softly at the memory, and then even wider as he read the note.Â
Hope you had a good day! I got some of those puffed crisps you like, have a few. Youâve earned it :)Â
He pulled open the pantry and sure enough, there they were. He tore open the packet, scoffing a few down before heading down the hallway to your bedroom. He changed into sweatpants quietly and curled up beside your sleeping frame before hearing a crinkling, crumpling sound as he lay his head down. Feeling around blindly, his hands came into contact with another small note and he flicked on the bedside lamp to read it.Â
Rest up, I love you âĄ
He pouted, turning off the light and snuggling into you, head tucked into the back of your neck.Â
The next few days continued as before, but Lando found your notes around the house like small glimmers of love.Â
Donât work too hard! was laying on top of his workout gear one morning.
Drive safely please! stuck to the steering wheel of his car.
BEST BF EVRRRR was sitting on top of his shoes when he went to put them on. (He quietly tucked this one into the back of his phone case for later.)
When he looked into the mirror after stepping out the shower, he was met with: Thereâs that pretty smile!
Wanna spoon? Â Stuck on the cutlery drawer.Â
Letâs do cardio together tonight⌠was on the door to his home gym.Â
You left the notes and noticed theyâd disappeared by the day after, assuming Lando read them, smiled and threw them out. What you didnât realise was that Lando was collecting them, making a neat pile in the glove compartment of his car. Over the next few days, whenever he felt lonely or needed assurance, he had a whole pile of your feelings to sift through and bask in.Â
When you woke up a few days later, you sighed at the cold, empty bed. Opening your eyes you were met with a fluro yellow square covering your eyes. You giggled, pulling the note left on your forehead.Â
Morning pretty girl, it said. I took the afternoon off and will pick you up from work. We have a LOT of catching up to do ;)Â

15TH MARCH: THE BATTLE OF THE PELENNOR FIELDS
Gandalf did not move. And in that very moment, away behind in some courtyard of the City, a cock crowed. Shrill and clear he crowed, recking nothing of wizardry or war, welcoming only the morning that in the sky far above the shadows of death was coming with the dawn.
And as if in answer there came from far away another note. Horns, horns, horns. In dark Mindolluinâs sides they dimly echoed. Great horns of the North wildly blowing. Rohan had come at last.

Yandere! Yokai Harem x Reader (III)
On your travels with the two demon companions, you stumble upon a fortified village plagued by monster attacks. It would be quite unlucky if the grand finale happened just as you step foot inside, right? Worry not, you're saved by a third mysterious yokai that you immediately recognize. The harem grows!
Content: female reader, monsters, violence
[Part 1] [Part 2] [Part 3] [Character Guide]
âAlright, howâs this?â
You do a clumsy pirouette before the two yokai men.
âThatâs...are you sure?â Kiritsubo eyes you, mildly confused. âItâs usually what men wear.â
Of course, you already know. After weeks of walking through feudal Japan, youâve reached the conclusion that modern clothing isnât the most practical choice. Not to mention the strange looks you always get from other people upon your arrival in any village. You needed something to blend in, and the typical fashion for your gender might not be compatible with your training. Youâd rather not swing a sword while covered in multiple layers of kimono.
Thus, you opted for the hakama pants typically worn by men. With your hair tied up and in this baggy attire, one could think youâre a young samurai. If they squint enough. You chuckle at the thought.
âSheâll wear whatever allows her to not be a burden.â Murasaki concludes with crossed arms.
One way to put it, you tell yourself.
âIf youâre done discussing fashion, we can leave.â The dark-haired man continues with indifference, standing up and adjusting the swords in the folds of his sash.
Both you and Kiritsubo hurry and follow behind obediently.
âWhere are we going this time?â You ask sheepishly.
âSouth-west. An old residence of his, although we will have to pass through a fortified settlement first. We should reach it before sunset.â
Itâs hard to imagine youâre the supposed savior in this equation. Murasaki has been leading you by the hand each step, carefully considering every detail on the map, and extensively planning your travels every evening. All this on top of your daily training. Youâve now mastered the basics with the katana heâs provided you, as well as some common prayers for exorcising small-class demons.
You glance at the daisho pair of swords under his belt. A long, thin blade, and a shorter backup version, both in elaborate matching scabbards meant to showcase the status and wealth of the samurai wearing them. In this case, meant to express his rank as the advisor and right hand of the famed onmyĹji. You certainly donât doubt Nakamaroâs decision to rely on Murasaki.
In comparison, Kiritsubo carries a nagamaki at his waist. A comically long blade in your opinion, used mostly to bring down horses during battle. Any regular sword wouldâve been too small for him. Despite his imposing appearance, youâve learned rather quickly just how different Kiritsubo is from the other yokai. Heâs quite clumsy in combat, often anxious about making mistakes, terribly apologetic, and overall has a heart too kind for his own good. If thereâs hesitation coming from his side, Murasaki immediately follows with his ruthless, ending blows. As a matter of fact, even youâve had to do the occasional killing to spare the man of such choices.
The silver-haired demon notices your eyes on him and smiles, excited. He reminds you of a large dog. A horned, fanged dog of monstrous strength, nonetheless the innocence is there. And he does make a great travel companion.
âHow much longer?â You grunt, looking up.
âAre you tired? I can carry you for the rest of the way-â Kiritsubo instantly offers but is interrupted by Murasakiâs barked orders.
âShe can walk. Donât spoil her.â He glares at you, then nods ahead. âWeâre almost there, so quit your whining.â
True to his word, you can finally discern the outline of a wall at the top of the hill. A few more steps, and you can even spot two guards standing beside the great gate.
âStop there!â
The soldiers lift their spears threateningly. Before you can react, Murasaki steps in front of you with a hand placed on his sword.
âWeâre just passing through.â He states factually.
âWeâre no longer allowing visitors.â One of the guards exclaims. âThe village has been raided by monsters recently and our Lord has closed all gates until the matter is solved.â
âThat means no filthy demons go in.â The other adds in a mocking tone, his gaze lingering on the horns of your companions. His mouth curls in disgust.
You can tell Murasaki is angered by the disrespectful approach. He is not one to let such insults slide and youâd rather avoid him claiming unnecessary victims; therefore, you push past his arm and plant yourself ahead with a polite greeting bow.
âThese yokai are with me. I vouch for their good behavior, so please consider letting us through. Perhaps we can even help you with these monsters.â
âYou? How would youâŚâ
The man stops abruptly, switching between you and the yokai. Eventually he inspects your scabbard, and he gasps, confusion twisting his features.
âCould it be? NoâŚHeâd be dead by now.â
âWhat are you talking about?â His partner inquires impatiently.
âThatâs the family seal belonging to Abe no Nakamaro.â He explains, pointing to the golden finish at the end of your katana handle. âIâve heard about him from my grandparents. But itâs been decades!â
âDonât be ridiculous. Youâre saying this kid is a legendary onmyĹji?â
âWho else would show up with demons as servants? Everything matches. Perhaps his powers have finally reached immortalityâ, he concludes solemnly.
The men continue their argument, and you clear your throat, embarrassed. What the hell? You canât possibly look that manly. Sure, youâve been skipping the makeup, and the clothes arenât exactly curve shaping, but to be mistaken for an old man is like a slap to the face.
Youâre about to deny their claims, but Murasaki swiftly pinches the back of your neck, and you wince. He lowers himself to your ear and whispers:
âThis will be to our advantage. Just go along with it.â âFine!â You mumble angrily. Then you turn back to the guards.
âV-very well, I see I havenât been forgotten.â You admit, theatrically. âLead me to your Lord and we shall discuss the details of your monster attack.â
Thus, you sip on your tea, kneeling at the luxurious table and awaiting the arrival of the feudal Lord. The servants are exchanging words, gossiping fervently next to the wall. âI wonder if he can cure my daughter!â one woman mumbles, visibly emotional.
âDo you think we can finally be saved? Heâll truly exorcise the beasts tormenting our village?â another whispers.
You wipe the sweat from your forehead and glare at Murasaki. You had no idea heâd given you Nakamaroâs old sword. Now youâre stuck pretending to be a pompous, long-dead asshat.
âWhat if they catch us?â You hiss between your teeth. âI donât know shit about onmyĹdĹ.â
âThen Iâll just kill them all. Simple as that.â The crimson-eyed man retorts, unconcerned. âHave a little fun, wonât you?â
âW-weâll help you come up with answers, (Y/N). Donât worry.â Kiritsubo chimes in, trying to reassure you.
You sigh in frustration and look out the window. The sun mustâve set a long time ago and has since been replaced by a pitch-black sky. Whatâs keeping the Lord? Surely, he canât be having important business meetings late at night.
Almost as if your thoughts were read, the door slides open and a servant wobbles in. The rest of the household workers are silent, expecting the entrance of their master, but no one is following behind. You observe the bizarre limp of the woman. Suddenly, she collapses to the floor, revealing her bloodied back torn by deep wounds, caused by some sort of claw. Her body is stiff.
Panic settles in right away, and the servants topple over each other to get away from the fresh cadaver. You struggle to get up among the terrified crowd, but thankfully Murasaki grabs your wrist and pulls you out into a quieter hallway.
âWhat the hell?â is all you manage to say.
âRotten.â Kiritsubo furrows his brows, sniffing the air. âSomeone in here must be possessed. Could be more of them.â
Murasaki surveys the surroundings and gestures towards his partner.
âWe have to see if the Lord is still alive. You go that way. Iâll take the front. Kill everyone suspicious.â
âWhat about me?â You demand, holding your breath.
âGet out and wait for us. You know how to draw a protection circle, donât you? I wonât take long.â The dark-haired yokai answers before vanishing.
Judging by the screams and wails coming from all directions, you suspect Kiritsubo is right about multiple attackers. You sprint across the hall, looking for an opening. The self-defense lessons didnât cover cursed humans with demonic powers. Youâll stay out of this one.
What an absolute mess. You have encountered some demons in your weeks spent here, but nothing to this degree. When the guards mentioned a monster attack, you imagined a ghost with a grudge, or some small fry yokai scaring the workers at night, not a mass curse that ends in a massacre. Of course, it had to happen the moment you arrived at the main house.
You find a room with a door leading to the inner courtyard. Seems isolated enough and it should provide a bit of shelter while you wait for the pair to finish the business. As you rush past the dead bodies, you notice a woman hiding behind a screen divider.
âAh! Itâs you!â she yells, aware of your presence.
From the shadow of her secret spot emerges the small frame of a child. The woman pushes the little human towards you, blocking your path.
âDonât worry, heâll protect us.â she gives her child another nudge. âGo on, hold onto him. Youâll be safe.â
What? No, no, no, no, no. Not happening. Youâre getting out.
âMaâam, sorry to break it to you under such circumstances, but Iâm not-â
Youâre interrupted by a loud growl. One of the possessed creatures mustâve followed your scent, and itâs now sliding into the room on all fours with the bones of the limbs twisting and creaking in unnatural pounces. You purse your lips in a frightened grimace. One advantage of the wide hakama pants â useful to know â is that no one can see your knees shaking cowardly.
Theoretically, you could use the brat as bait and run for your life. Itâd make a decent obstacle. Unfortunately for your life span, youâve been gifted with an idiotic sense of duty instead of survival instincts.
âKeep your distance. If I canât kill it, get out and donât look backâ you advise, positioning yourself in the learned stance and sliding the sword out of its sheath.
Damn it! Then again, it should be like fighting a zombie, right? Given the pathetic way it drags itself around, it canât be too difficult to hit. Aim for the head, you repeat in your mind. Your fingers grip around the handle.
The ghoulish beast lowers itself, like a spring about to recoil, and leaps across the room with an ease you did not anticipate. Despite your iron hold, it slaps the blade out of your hands with enormous force. The impact breaks your skin, and you wince. Thereâs no time to weep, within seconds it could go for your vitals next. While Murasaki hasnât gotten around to teaching you much hand-to-hand combat, youâve read your fair share of shounen manga. The first idea that comes to mind is to put the beast in a sumo lock. You bend your knees smoothly and wrap your arms around the monster, feeling for something to hold onto. You grit your teeth and attempt to lift the creature.
A thundering laugh resonates within the walls, and you jolt, startled.
âI never thought Iâd see the mighty Abe no Nakamaro wrestling with ankle biters like this. What are you going to do, throw it out of the ring?â
The voice is deep, loud, and unfamiliar. You canât afford to look back to see the source, but itâs not hard to figure out the possibilities. So far, youâve only been called by that cursed name by the yokai accomplices. Although now is not the best time to seek revenge.
âShut up, I panickedâ, you snap in frustration. âIf you canât help, keep that trap closed!â
The sudden burst of anger seems to have triggered something within your body, a power you donât recognize. You watch as your arms effortlessly pick up the monster and swing it across the room, its body demolishing the opposing wall and causing thick clouds of dust to rise and spread everywhere.
The impact mustâve alerted the nearby ghouls, as you can now hear the agitated trample and screeching rapidly approaching. Youâre not confident you can pull the same lucky move a second time.
You turn to search for your sword, but itâs already being handed to you by the mysterious yokai whoâs been observing your little fight. You have to step aside and tilt your head all the way back in order to fully view the gigantic frame of the man.
Ah, you recognize the features immediately. The same kind of fear you felt when you stumbled upon that old shrine statue is now tugging at your chest.
âYouâre Suma, right?â
A proud, wide grin forms on his face, revealing a pair of glistening fangs. His expression is unexpectedly soft and friendly.
âWeâre halfway through our introductions then, eh?â You pick up the sword and his fingers stretch out for a handshake. âWhat is your given name? Iâm guessing you donât willingly go by thatâŚtitle.â
âI very much prefer (Y/N), yes.â You marvel at the significant difference in size, placing your small hand in his. âWas that your power I just used?â
âMhhm. You sure surprised me there! Itâs not something I did intentionally, but I sâppose we just resonate that well, huh?â
He laughs again, completely unbothered by the impending danger.
âAlright, you can leave the rest to me. Take the lady outside, it will get a little messy.â
And with that, he casually walks towards the gathering of ghouls. You guide the family to the courtyard and wait for the battle to end.
âDo you think sheâll be fine by herself?â Kiritsubo is resting against the fence, keeping you under a watchful gaze.
âLet the humans sort it out among themselves.â Murasaki responds, somewhat bored.
The morning after the attack, you offered to deal with the survivors: ask them how everything started, if theyâd noticed anything suspicious days prior to the event, and if the route to Nakamaroâs old residence was still open. The yokai men had found the feudal Lord in the jaws of a possessed creature and he quickly succumbed to his wounds. Consequently, only the remaining servants could provide them with clues.
A village being targeted like this is highly unusual, and Murasaki canât shake the feeling it could be related to their master.
âOh, where are you heading after this?â The silver-haired yokai glances at Suma, sitting lazily next to them.
âWhere? After you just told me the whole story? Iâm way too invested in this modern reincarnation that just popped out of nowhere, so Iâm tagging along!â He announces with a chuckle.
Murasaki frowns.
âWe donât need your help.â
âDonât be like that.â The giant man pouts dramatically. âAre you upset I saved (Y/N) before you?â
âW-we were on our way!â Kiritsubo retorts, visibly bothered.
âItâs a done deal!â Suma rests his hands under his head and yawns. âBesides, the little human already said he doesnât mind.â
âHe? (Y/N) is a woman.â
The redhead abruptly sits up and gasps. Â
âWait, what?â
âDonât get funny ideas, manâ, the silver-haired demon warns.

A Luke fic with a read whoâs the daughters of Aphrodite and its capture the flag and she uses her charms to distract him and ends up failing bc once her team she loses they see her and Luke but he has kiss marks all over his face and sheâs blushing having her lipstick smudged??
all my love â luke castellan
pairing: luke castellan x aphrodite fem!reader
warnings: use of y/n and she/her pronouns, making out (tehehe), petnames used (princess, babe, love), like one curse word
a/n: I. LOVE. THIS. REQUEST.
masterlist !
ę°á â ŕťęą
y/n was well aware how much luke loved capture the flag. she knew he always helped annabeth lead the blue team to victory. being luke's girlfriend, she also knew his every move. which explains why y/n's currently waiting in a secluded spot in the middle of the forest, in between the lake and the mess hall.
she knew luke would show up soon, on his way to get the red team's flag, the team y/n was on. but capture the flag was the last thing on her mind.
the previous night luke had just so happened to make y/n, the overly confident daughter of aphrodite, become flustered in front of luke's whole cabin. this was going to be y/n's payback.
she tossed her red horse-hair helmet to the side many minutes ago. she hated how it messed up her hair. only a few minutes go by, until she hears rustled footsteps, leaves crunching under someone's shoe.
"princess?"
y/n turns at luke's voice.
"hi handsome," she smiles, waving her fingers.
luke takes off his own helmet, holding it between his arm and waist.
"what are you doing out here? shouldn't you be gaurding your flag, or fighting someone?"
y/n only walked closer, and she could've sworn you heard luke's heart rate pick up from where she was standing.
"i wanted to see you," y/n smiled again, her voice was soft. a contrast from the loud yelling from the capture the flag game going on around the couple.
y/n now stood close enough and wrapped her hands around luke's neck, playing with the dark curls. he hated to admit it but he could sit with y/n's hands in his hair for hours.
luke's helmet fell to the ground, while he held onto her waist.
y/n knew what she was doing to luke. being the daughter of aphrodite definitely had it's perks. y/n however, was lucky. not only could she make anyone fall in love with her with the bat of an eye, she had the power to wrap any soul around her finger. the ladder was happening to luke. what? she loved teasing him.
before luke could ask anymore questions, y/n stood up on her tip toes to kiss luke's lips. he gasped, taken aback by the action, but of course he kissed back. y/n's hands only tighted on his hair as she started deepening the kiss. luke walked the two backwards, pushing y/n's back into a tree. y/n pulled her lips away from luke, but only to place another kiss at the corner of his lips, a few on his cheeks, nose and three on his neck.
luke's ears perked at the sound a horn blowing in the distance. it was chiron, standing next to clarisse with the blue flag in her hands.
"you little cheater!" luke poked y/n in her sides, "you distracted me."
y/n only shrugs, "who's to say?"
luke and y/n both make their way towards the mess hall, where they heard the horn sound coming from.
once the two apear out of the woods, percy's quick to nudge annabeth. the girl turns, and gasps so loudly that it catches the attention of the nearby campers.
"holy shit, what happened to you?" clarisse shouts in amusement from beside chiron.
"clarisse," chiron states in a lecturing tone.
"sorry, wrong time."
the campers all see y/n and luke standing beside one another. luke wasn't aware of the plethora of red lipstick stains all over his face and neck. he turned to y/n, confused as ever, and just watched as she wiped away her smudged lipstick.
"told you i'd get you back from last night."

Shadows in Gotham
---
Gothamâs twilight sky was a patchwork of purples and reds, a fading canvas that gave way to the inky blackness of night. The city was alive with the usual sounds of distant sirens, honking horns, and the underlying hum of danger that never quite left its streets. For Danny Fenton, now in his early twenties, Gotham was supposed to be a fresh startâa place to lay low and raise his unconventional family.
His daughter, Danielle, Ellie, as she preferredâskipped ahead on the cracked sidewalk, her energy boundless despite the long day. She looked about ten years old, though she was technically more of a clone than a traditional daughter. She had Dannyâs black hair but with an unruly curl to it, and her bright blue eyes sparkled with a mischievous light. Beside Danny, holding his hand, was a boy who looked no older than eight. His hair was tousled, and his expression was a strange mix of innocence and the haunting wisdom of someone far older. This was Dan, Dannyâs de-aged evil future self, a living, breathing reminder of what could go wrong if they werenât careful.
The trio moved through the narrow streets, Dannyâs senses on high alert as they made their way back to the modest apartment they now called home. He had retired from the life of a ghostly vigilante, focusing instead on keeping his small family safe and hidden from the relentless pursuit of the Guys in White (GIW). To the world, they were just another struggling family in Gotham. But beneath the surface, their existence was anything but ordinary.
âCan we get pizza tonight?â Ellie asked, her voice full of hope as she glanced back at Danny.
âPizza sounds good,â Danny replied with a smile. âBut itâs Gotham, so letâs hope the delivery guy makes it to our place in one piece.â
Ellie giggled, and even Dan let out a rare smile, though it was fleeting. The moment of normalcy was interrupted by the sound of a scuffle up ahead. Dannyâs instincts kicked in as he pulled his kids closer, eyes narrowing at the scene unfolding just around the corner.
A man, clearly desperate, was trying to rob a woman at gunpoint. The womanâs purse dangled from his shaky hand, and fear was etched across her face. Danny knew he should keep moving, that getting involved could blow their cover, but he couldnât just walk away.
âStay here,â Danny whispered to Ellie and Dan, his voice firm.
Before he could intervene, a shadowy figure dropped from the rooftops, landing silently behind the mugger. The man didnât stand a chance as a blur of red and black moved with lethal precision. Within seconds, the mugger was disarmed and unconscious on the pavement.
Red Hood stood over the man, his stance relaxed but ready, as if this was just another routine night in Gotham. He turned to the woman, who quickly grabbed her purse and bolted, muttering her thanks. It was only then that Red Hood noticed Danny and the kids standing just a few feet away, watching the scene unfold.
Danny tensed as the vigilanteâs eyesâhidden behind that crimson helmetâseemed to study them. He instinctively placed a hand on each of his kidsâ shoulders, ready to flee if things went south.
âYou alright?â Red Hood asked, his voice rough but not unkind. He seemed to soften at the sight of the kids, his posture relaxing ever so slightly.
âYeah, weâre fine,â Danny replied, his tone cautious. âJust heading home.â
Red Hoodâs gaze flicked between Danny and the children, and Danny could almost feel the wheels turning behind that mask. This was Gotham, after all, a city full of dark secrets. A young man, barely an adult, with two small kids in towâit wasnât hard to jump to conclusions.
âYou live around here?â Red Hood pressed, the curiosity in his voice making Dannyâs stomach tighten.
âNot far,â Danny answered, hoping to end the conversation quickly. âJust trying to keep my family safe.â
Red Hood nodded slowly, as if weighing his next words. âGothamâs not exactly the best place to raise kids, especially if youâre... alone.â
Dannyâs jaw clenched, recognizing the underlying question. âWe manage.â
Before Red Hood could probe further, Ellie stepped forward, her usual boldness taking over. âHeâs the best dad ever! And we donât need any help, mister.â
Red Hood chuckled softly, the sound almost disarming. âIâm sure he is, kid. But just in case, you should know there are people around here who can help... if you ever need it.â
Danny forced a tight smile, grateful for Ellieâs fierce loyalty but wary of the attention theyâd attracted. âThanks, but weâre good.â
Red Hood seemed to accept this, though the suspicion in his stance didnât entirely fade. âTake care of yourself,â he said finally, before turning and vanishing into the shadows as quickly as heâd appeared.
Danny let out a breath he didnât realize he was holding. The encounter had been brief, but he knew it wouldnât be the last. The Bat Family had eyes everywhere, and their curiosity was piqued.
âLetâs get home,â Danny murmured, guiding Ellie and Dan down the street with renewed urgency.
They reached their apartment without further incident, the familiar creak of the stairs a welcome sound. Once inside, Danny locked the door and sagged against it, the weight of their precarious situation pressing down on him.
Ellie flopped onto the worn couch, her earlier bravado replaced with concern. âAre we in trouble, Dad?â
Danny ruffled her hair affectionately. âNo, Ellie. Weâre just... being careful. Thatâs all.â
Dan sat quietly at the kitchen table, his eyes distant as he processed the nightâs events. âHe was one of the Bats, wasnât he?â
Danny nodded, joining Dan at the table. âYeah, Red Hood. Heâs... complicated. But we should be alright if we keep a low profile.â
The night passed uneventfully, but the encounter with Red Hood lingered in Dannyâs mind. He knew that living in Gotham meant constant vigilance, but the thought of the Bat Family watching them added a new layer of stress.
---
Meanwhile, across town, the Bat Family gathered in the Batcave, the massive space filled with the glow of computer screens and the quiet hum of machinery.
âInteresting case tonight,â Red HoodâJason Toddâbegan as he removed his helmet, revealing the slightly tousled dark hair underneath. âRan into a guy with two kids. They seemed... out of place.â
âOut of place in Gotham?â Dick Grayson, quipped from where he was perched on the edge of the Batcomputerâs console. âThatâs pretty much everyone.â
Jason shot him a look. âNot like that. The guy was young, barely in his twenties. The kids were ten and eight, maybe. And something about them just... felt off.â
Bruce Wayne, Batman, looked up from the screen, his expression unreadable. âOff how?â
Jason hesitated, searching for the right words. âI donât know. Thereâs something heâs not saying. And those kidsâtheyâre attached to him, but itâs like theyâre all trying to stay under the radar.â
Damian Wayne, the current Robin, scoffed. âPlenty of people try to stay out of sight in this city. Itâs not our problem unless they break the law.â
âYeah, but...â Jason trailed off, running a hand through his hair. âThereâs a chance that guyâs a victim. The way the girl talked about him, it was like she was protecting him.â
Bruceâs eyes narrowed. âDo you think the children are in danger?â
Jason frowned, shaking his head. âNot from him. I think theyâre all running from something.â
Silence settled over the Batcave as they considered the implications. Bruce stood, his presence commanding as ever. âKeep an eye on them. Gotham has a way of uncovering secrets, and we canât afford to overlook anything.â
---
Back at the apartment, Danny lay awake, staring at the ceiling. The shadows played tricks in the dim light, reminding him of the life he left behind. He had taken on more than just the role of a fatherâhe had become a protector, a shield against the darkness that sought to consume them.
But Gotham was relentless, and he knew their time in the shadows was running out.

Underneath the Surface
As an attendant for the first Harbinger, Il Capitano, you work to maintain his household in Snezhnaya, though you can still only admire him from afar. But that distant reverence changes completely when you are offered another role that goes beyond your day-to-day and allows you to share a bond with him that no one else knows the true nature of. This is a dream come true, of course, but what happens when the dream ends? When will it end? And what will you do after it ends?
ooc!capitano x afab!f!reader, nsfw, 18+
word count: ~4,600
cw: power imbalance + unhealthy relationship dynamics, dom/sub dynamics, sadism/masochism, pain kink, knife kink, praise kink, predator/prey, ownership + master, use of other sharp objects (claws), temperature play, graphic descriptions of blood/injuries/bruises/pain/etc., sensory deprivation (blindfold), mentions of death + murder
notes: ok i know everyone is head over heels for capitano because big looming man + the mask and cape stay on during sex ikik i get it, but what if our captain had... a dark, serious, + slightly twisted personality? bc i imagine, in canon, for someone so committed to his work and the tsaritsa, his sense of justice and overpowering physical strength could prevent him from making rash decisions like being in a relationship with another... anyway, my take on capitano! tysssssm to @staraxiaa for beta-reading and letting me yap away in our discord <33 lena, could not have churned this out any earlier if it were not for your enthusiasm and hypnosis. ily queen. anyway, hope y'all enjoy!
THE HALLS are still, silent aside from the occasional clanking of metal weaponry. All of the soldiers and attendants are holding their breaths, anticipating for what is to come. You, too, wait, immobile, on the edge of your chair in front of the vanity. You avoid your reflection in the mirror, but appearances are of utmost importance, so you busy yourself by repeatedly smoothing the pleats of your silk nightgown.Â
It has been two long months since you have fallen back into this routine: waking before sunrise, dressing with your finest gowns and lingerie, and awaiting his instruction throughout the day. Of course, you still behave in an appropriate manner befitting of his grace when he is not around, but there is no need to impress. Not many are aware of the nature of your agreement with him, anyway. Â
A soldierâs call can be heard from outside your window, a signal of his graceâs arrival from the accompanying blare of a horn. You suck in a sharp breath, pursing your lips as you hold, before exhaling completely. You have half an hour.
Making your way around his chamber, you go about your final checks. He has always been particular with the way things should be, his sense of justice and discipline underlying and interweaving with every aspect of his own life. You blow away specks of dust from his bookshelves, tie the chiffon of the bed canopy curtains to their posts, and return your makeup on the vanity back to a pouch, not before dabbing on a bit more powder and curling your eyelashes once more.
The half hour passes quickly, and you rush to stand by the door as you hear the heavy thuds of his boots approach. You bow your head and curtsy as he steps in. It is important that you do not look at him until he permits. He does not greet you, simply strides over to the bathroom and shuts the door behind him, heading to his closet farther beyond.
You sigh with relief. He did not take you immediately.
The next step of the routine is to wait for him to change. Beyond the door, you hear the faint rustle of heavy fabric hitting the floor, silver and bronze embossings clicking against sharp nails, and the occasional low grunt. You would assist him if you could, but no one has seen him without his fur coat and mask. You consider yourself lucky to have seen him without his cloak, but you, too, have never witnessed his visage. It is strange, though. As per your contract, you are supposed to help him with such tasks. Shrugging, you figure there is no need to hypothesize. You would never dare to act like you understand his grace and how he thinks and acts.
If he still does not speak to you when he returns, the burden falls on you to initiate.
You watch as the door handle twists before the door swings open. Instinctively, you lower your gaze and nod your head once in greeting. Pausing a beat, you give him a chance to speak if he wants. But he does not.
âYour grace,â you say.
He walks over to you, standing in front of where you sit on the edge of his bed. A gloved hand rests on the crown of your head â firm, cold. It traces the shape of your skull, sliding down to your ear, sharp metal claws scraping against the cartilage and the tender skin of your neck. He continues along the path of your jawline before holding your chin between his index finger and thumb. You are still looking downwards, only able to see up to his clothed forearm. Holding you steady, he appraises you and the effort you put into yourself. You try to relax under his gaze, not as an act of defiance or resistance but rather as a demonstration of your trust and loyalty in him. His grace knows best, after all. His criticism is guidance, only out of best interest for you, his praise gospel, miraculous stories to pass down for generations.
He hums. It is a deep, satisfied rumble.
âWell done,â he praises, releasing his hold. âI am relieved to be back.â
It is not often that his grace is content. He is rarely appeased with his own efforts. Naturally, you feel a sense of giddiness, a shiver of delight threatening to shake up your still frame. You even notice an urge of want for him, hoping that he would pay just a little more attention to the way you did your hair or the new perfume you are wearing or how the color of the night gown compliments the curves and rolls of your body. A stroke of luck, you think, to keep your dangerous emotions at bay. You must reflect on tonight and emulate what went well going forward.
Before you can relay your gratitude to your captain, he continues to speak. âI would like to try something different tonight.â
He pulls a wide silk scarf out from his pocket and wraps the navy fabric around your head, thereby obscuring your vision. The lack of light in the room, along with the dark shade of the blindfold, make it impossible for you to see anything beyond the faint silhouette of your hands as you stretch them out in front of you to test the opacity of the silk. But this is nothing out of the ordinary.
You startle as he splays his palm on your back and slides an arm underneath your legs. He picks you up, as if you are but a mere feather, and repositions you so that you are lying down on the bed.
âIt will hurt. Will you be able to take it?â he asks. Void of his usual assertiveness, he is shedding his role of a Harbinger, melting into a simple person who wants his desires fulfilled. He is speaking to you with caution and respect, fulfilling his end of his contract, as your master, your owner, to ensure that tonightâs experience will be pleasurable for you as well. However, you know the power and strength he holds beyond the walls of his bedroom will never fully escape your conscience. It is your obligation to protect yourself from dire harm, but you cannot deny him the opportunity to experiment, in fear of retaliation and punishment.
You reply, âHow painful?â
The bed dips beside your hip, and you feel the leather of his glove rub into your thigh.
âI will use my gloves and a knife.â
Scared or excited, you cannot tell. At his words, you become acutely sensitive towards the feel of his gloved hand as he continues to glide it up and down your leg. You can almost taste the steely, icy sting of his claws digging into the fat of your thigh, breaking the skin just enough for beaded crimson to trickle, not enough to scar permanently.
âYour grace, is this a punishment?â
âNot at all.â His hand travels farther up and pushes the lace trim of your nightgown aside to reveal your underwear underneath. He pulls at the ribbons at the side, slowly untying the thong, as he chuckles, âIt is a reward, for your effort and time.â
The praise is doing wonders to you. You feel dizzy, light, and hot in the head, and the pulsing in your core intensifies, your hole fluttering and throbbing in tandem with the escalating rate of your heartbeat. Even though you cannot see, you can almost sense him smiling, perhaps at the wetness that is spotting your underwear or possibly even the state of your whole being, showing his understanding of and command over your body.
The latter seems likely as he presses his claws into your skin, as if to counter and neutralize your raging internal inferno. The cold shocks the nerves at the juncture where your hip connects to your leg, where the ribbon of your panties used to be tied at.
âI will start easy,â he explains. To demonstrate, he curls his fingers and pushes, channeling all of the pressure into the tips of his claws and persists until they shallowly latch into your skin. You squirm, jump, and whimper at the pain. It hurts more than you had expected, though you really had no point of comparison in the first place. You continue to shudder as he holds his fingers in place, probably gauging your reaction.
âTh-that is alright,â you manage to stammer. The pinch may be harsh, but it does not draw blood or bring tears to your eyes, simply a scraping of the surface of your skin. You can withstand a little more, you reassure yourself. This is your reward. Without a word, he moves his hands back down to your thighs and scratches your right.
The motion is fast, clean. In fact, your body and mind do not react to the two long, slanted cuts he leaves, the blood only spilling milliseconds after the damage has been done. The pain comes even later. At first, you feel nothing, and even the thin streams of blood flowing out of the wounds only leave a wet sensation on your otherwise untainted legs. But then, the stinging comes, akin to that of an unexpected paper cut. Except, with each passing second, it gets worse, as if the paper cut is being pulled along and extended, and your leg strains against his hold to move, to distract itself from the harm inflicted. Crimson is sure to be leaking from the full length of the cuts, and at the back of your throat, you can almost taste the coppery scent of oxidizing iron.
When he moves to repeat the same onto your other leg, you bite the inside of your cheek to prepare for the incoming pain. Part of your role is to adapt quickly, and in this case, you have to sense and react to his graceâs next steps immediately. The chiseled points of his nails cut through your skin like a large kitchen knife slicing through even the toughest of ingredients â precise, swift, ignorant of any and all resistance.
You have never gone this long with just pain, let alone be deprived of one of your senses. Nights with his grace are inevitably bound to be painful, but in his own way, he softens the blows and plows of his roughness and aggression by pleasuring your body.
Your first morning after, you woke up unable to feel anything past your waist. Throughout the night, to show you just exactly what you were getting yourself into, he forced you to reach peak after peak after peak as a test of your endurance, stamina, loyalty. Though, you were more shocked to see the purpling bruises encircling your ankles and wrists, as if his grace had used cuffs on you. But he had not. Those bruises were entirely inflicted by his tight hold on you, shackling you down as you thrashed and kicked and instinctively attempted to escape, serving the same purpose in chaining your life and mercy to his will.
Oneâs ideals â justice â will always come at the cost of anotherâs freedom â autonomy.
But you are not opposed to such limitations. Out of all of the Harbingers, you are endlessly grateful that it is his grace who is your leader. Even though he may not be your direct master beyond the clauses of your contract, he is dutiful and considerate towards those who swear an oath to his name. You come from a family of Fatui soldiers, some of the best and the brightest, many trained under the watchful supervision of his grace, so from birth, you have been taught to idolize him. But to have your idol recognize you? Speak to you? Bed you? Unheard of, and to this day, you are not sure why he chooses you, time and time again. You cannot even fathom how he knows of you â a simple, one-of-several attendants who maintain his mansion of a home under the instruction of the head butler.
The nature of your contract with him is simple. (His grace often comments how he much prefers the dealings of the Liyuen people, how quick they are to draw up agreements and negotiations, compared to the conniving nature of some of his colleagues.) Whenever he returns, you shall take care of his personal desires and wants, as he will with yours. You are to fully commit yourself to him, trust in his intuition to know how to treat you accordingly, and he expects you to reciprocate, to satisfy him to the best of your abilities.
Your role is not as physically taxing as it is mentally laborious. His grace is rarely home â you recently heard he has a surge of dealings in Natlan that require his attention â, so your body is not under constant stress. However, when you are with him, you behave as if every night together is a performance review, a test of your memory, if you remember how to overcome your instincts to hold your body still enough in place, if you remember the way he gravitates towards elegant silk dresses and kimonos, if you remember that he will never apologize but will wrap gauze around your wounds when you are asleep.
You know you are expendable. As soon as you fail to satisfy him, he could â will â discard and replace you. While he has never outright pressured you, you know his grace is assessing you as well. But you cannot help but wonder â hope â that there is something about you â something so intrinsic and bespoke about you â that explains why, even in your failings, he will not let you go. You are sure there are faults that lie in you that you cannot see, that he will see. Yet, because you have not been let go, you wonder if he is alright with slight imperfections because it is no one other than you.
Regardless, you must not be too full of yourself. That is a cardinal sin with respect to his graceâs values. The strong become the weak as soon as they overestimate themselves, he would often preach.
You are brought back by a building pressure at your ankles. You raise your head to look down, to no avail. But you can feel his gloves, now slightly warm from being in contact with your body, wrapping themselves around your protruding bones, tighter and tighter, the chains locking with finality. There is a buzz in your toes from the constriction of circulation, and you bite on your lower lip to prevent yourself from whining at the bruising grip he has on you. You count beats in your head, seconds not true to time, muddled by the exhilarated racing of your heart, foolishly trying to distract yourself by examining his graceâs behavior instead. How long will he hold for? How long does it take to leave stubborn bruises that will remain for at least three days? Is it supposed to hurt this much?
But all of those questions and concerns do not matter anymore as soon as he speaks. âI was right in choosing you.â
As if his affirmation was not enough, he releases your legs and moves up the bed to embrace you. Winding his arms around you, he lifts you a margin off the bed so that your chests touch, your silk against his thick black wool. One of his hands then comes up to cradle the back of your head, gently brushing and patting you, almost like he is lulling you to sleep. You melt, and you have never felt such a strong urge to wrap him in your own arms.
Perhaps you can be a bit greedy tonight? Throwing caution to the wind, you mumble, âY-your grace, may IâŚ?â
His approving hum makes your heart trill with joy. To avoid any mishaps, you place your hands on his arms, following their sturdy build until you reach his shoulders. From here, your fingertips can brush against his flowing black hair. It is coarse and thick, and you muster all of your willpower to resist the urge to run your hands through the locks.
As if reading your mind, he says, âYou can touch my hair, if you so wish.â
âThat was not my intention,â you reply, fighting the smile threatening to bloom on your face.Â
He insists by leaning closer to you, so that you are forced to feel the front, shorter strands of his hair poke at your exposed clavicles. You can even argue that you can feel his breath from here, but then again, does his grace breathe? Is he man or monster? (Benefactor or foe?)
âI shall resume.â And he proceeds to grab you at the waist, gripping you as tightly as he did to your ankles, and you feel the same pressure building within you. But you can hold on longer, after all. This is a reward.
He pushes the silk dress all the way up to your neck and exposes your upper body. As your body tenses in response to the cold, he pokes at the goosebumps appearing on your skin, as well as uses the tip of a nail to trace your areolae, centimeters away from your perked nipples. He circles them for two eight-counts, slow and drawling, before suddenly pinching and tugging at them. You yelp â an unintended mistake â and arch your back. He is still clothed, and the metal buttons and chains of his blazer dig into your skin for the briefest of moments, eliciting another wave of shudders from you.
And the worst of the pain comes. He gives one last pinch to your nipples before moving his hands to your sides where your rib cage lies right underneath. He rubs his thumbs over the bump of each bone, gliding his fingers back and forth, perpendicular to the way your bones curve inwards to protect your insides. You do not know this, but he is searching, identifying where he will lay his wreckage next, between which ribs to leave his trace. Then, he curls his claws into you, a bone or two below your breasts, and sinks them into you, slowly wounding you parallel to the slanted direction of your cage.
It is unbearable. There is no way to prevent yourself from screaming and sobbing. Tears drench the blindfold within seconds, and you can only distract yourself by tightening your embrace around his neck and digging your own nails into your forearms to somehow transfer the pain elsewhere, overwhelm your brain so that it cannot perceive the full extent of the damage being done to your chest. Otherwise, you can only hope that his grace is understanding and allows you to wail at the gashes he is leaving.
And what about appearances? Surely, your body will be marred from tonight and may not ever fully erase the signs of tonightâs activities.
You freeze. Your blood chills. Physical pain dims and recedes to the back of your mind.
Appearances⌠do matter. If you dared to come up with any reason as to why his grace has chosen you, it would only be sensible to conclude that it is because of the way you look, no? Prior to your first night together, you had never interacted with him before â he did not even present the contract for this partnership to you â the head butler did! Therefore, there is no possibility that his grace knows you well, aside from direct reports from the head butler and, perhaps, passing comments from your family. And he would definitely not choose you for your talents, as you have none.
In fact, the only reason you are in the castle is quite simple. Though you are not disowned by your family, you are not treated as one of them. You were sickly throughout childhood, meaning you could not start training early enough. Even if you had enrolled later on, you would have never been sufficient enough in your capabilities to reach the high official ranks that your family has held onto for decades. Lacking the combat prowess your other siblings, parents, and ancestors have, you will never be able to fulfill your lineageâs mission to the Tsaritsa. Therefore, you had to find other ways to serve the Fatui, and your search led you to his graceâs household.
There is nothing to your person besides a family crest that does not want to claim you and a corporeal weak to the natural winds and storms of Snezhnaya. And, truly, the only thing you have all to yourself is this body of yours, something you can willingly choose to offer as long as it cooperates with you.
Is this it? After he scars and carves and rips you open, not even this anatomy of yours will be yours ever again. Is he to leave his mark on you forever, only to end this arrangement soon after?
Your wails are no longer because of your flesh being torn apart by cold, ruthless hands, hands that know the feel and taste and rotting warmth of blood. Instead, these wails are ones afraid of a future without these hands, these nails that are now also stained with your blood and skin and tears. When he cleans these gloves later, you can only hope the alcohol does not eradicate all of your traces.
He does not stop until the gashes reach the ends of your rib cage.Â
Taking deep breaths from your mouth, you gasp for air as he pulls away and sits back on his heels to examine your state â spent, covered in spit and blood and cold sweat, many things but your usual demureness.
You are incapable of keeping up such a ruse. You are too exhausted and tortured to even feign obedience. Though, if his grace asked, you would try for him, despite knowing you would barely be able to put on a show. Because for him, you would, without a beat of doubt or hesitation, take on any role if he asked you of it, as long as you can share a private bond with him, one that no else knows the intimate details of.Â
You hear shuffling, a pocket being pulled open â good, blood stains thread quite stubbornly â, and a quick flick of something clicking into place.
âThis will be the last thing I do to you tonight. Raise your arm.â
You do as he says, barely feeling your forearms and beyond. He catches your hand and turns it over so that your palm is facing the ceiling.
The smooth, cool surface is recognizable, even to someone who has not fought in years. He places the flat side of the blade against your skin, letting it soak and adjust to your broiling heat. Once it is warm enough, he makes quick work, making short cuts in various directions around your wrist, over the spot where you take your pulse. As he works, he turns your wrist around as needed. The cuts always sting a bit at first before the sensation of the next being made takes over. You miserably think how you will never be able to marry with the way his grace is etching himself into you.
It does not take long, given how skilled he is.
But the routine has been disrupted, and when he sets your arm down, you are not sure what to do next. Usually, you would be unconscious by now. But you are wide awake, body thrumming and pulsing, sending signals to all the places where your nerves are exposed.
Again, you think back to the same question. Is this supposed to be my reward?
âYou will now rest.â His graceâs voice commands, leaving no space for argument.
So you ask, instead of objecting. âAnd my body?â
âWe will leave it as is. I need them to mark.â He enunciates with finality. You are unable to probe further, unable to even get a glimpse of what he means beyond his statements.
You manage to croak, âMy apologies, your grace, for failing to restrain myself this evening.â
He only places his hand on the crown of your head, soft smooths and pats, like at the very beginning of tonight, before everything that has since occurred.Â
Perhaps, what you long for, whether that be his touch or his coldness or his grace himself, is salvation. Someone who can bestow you with a responsibility so you can make yourself useful, find value in your being beyond a last name and damaged flesh. Despite tonight, you still want his grace to be with you, even if that means he devours you whole by the morning. Because you are already indebted to him for your employment. And you now owe him more than ever for permitting you to invade the confines of his space, to be surrounded by everything that is his, to feel him. To be something special is what you deeply, most greedily covet, and you are fearful that, in the near future, you will not be the only person who can say they have seen the captain without his coat on. Because without his grace, what will you become? Who are you? What are you?
Rather than relieve your body of strain through arousal and pleasure, tonight, he provides tepid comfort through the slow tempo of his hand against your head, an intangible poultice against your physical wounds. Inside, you realize that, all along, the reward has been his graceâs direct kindness and generosity towards you. And you tell yourself to enjoy these last remnants of his undivided attention, and fall asleep.Â
In the morning, you do as planned. Wake early. Bathe in scorching hot water even though it could rot your untended wounds. Dress in a burgundy long-sleeved gown. Prepare your hair and makeup. Pray that this dawn is not the last sunrise you will share with him.
Before you leave the bedroom to greet his grace, who is no doubt already working in his office, you sigh, filled with a deep sense of shame, disappointment, and mourning, though these words are futile in fully grasping all that festers within you.
But the walls of this bedroom know something you do not. And they think you ought to know, as they watch you leave with palpable dejection.
They have seen their owner evolve and age over time. Yet, they have only seen him exhilarated barely a few times â and rarely excited and riled up by the same thing more than twice.
The walls see, hear, smell everything about their owner.
Last night, amidst your cries, his grace was huffing with exertion, pouring effort and energy into your body. His eyes widened, pupils dilated, at the way your body struggled under his hold, yet you only held him closer. Mouth gaped in awe at how you screeched from the pain yet did not fight back even as an animalistic instinct to survive. He was practically leaking bloodlust, or more specifically, a strong urge to claim, overwhelm, overpower you. And he did so, purposely not leaving you bandages on the night table as always so that the wounds would stay intact. These cuts and gashes and tears shall never disappear from your body, and you will never forget the pain he has inflicted upon you. He has engraved himself into you because, while his righteousness and loyalty to the Tsaritsa come first, he will still return to you when he can. And he does not want you to forget that, even if this reminder comes in the form of garish wounds and the delicate traces of a bracelet in your skin.
The walls know why his grace chooses you. What you really should know is how much of an abnormality you really are. And his grace adores that about you.

Opening your eyes, you blink a few times, trying to adjust your vision to the darkness surrounding you. There is a faint glow that gently illuminates the space around you but everything else is mostly darkness and all you can make out are vague shapes and shadows. Looking around, you see that a small bit of light is coming from some embers in a dying fire next to you. This is definitely not your tiny studio apartment back home.
Where the hell are you?
As you sit up, you rub your eyes, groaning at the stiffness in your joints. From the aches in your muscles, you must have been asleep for a while. Looking down, you realize that you are lying on a bed of what seem to be soft furs or pelts of some kind. A cool breeze drifts in from somewhere and you shiver, realizing that you are also naked.Â
What the fuck happened?
But before you can try to rack your foggy brain to figure it out, a giant yellow eye the size of your head blinks open at the edge of the darkness across from you. Yelping in shock, you scramble backwards as the eye rotates to reveal a second one just as large and luminescent. Both eyes have giant slitted pupils and seem to glow in the darkness. Before you can get far, something smooth and cool wraps around your waist, holding you in place. Heart pounding in your ears, you glance down to find that it is a dark green, almost black, appendage covered in scales. Extending from the darkness, it winds around your stomach with the end coming to a tapered point near your navel. It squeezes gently, hard enough to hold you firm but not enough to hurt.
Holy shit, is it a tail of some sort?
Too terrified to move further, you hold your breath and look back up at the giant yellow orbs peering at you from the shadows. Slowly, they begin to draw closer, and you hear heavy, measured thuds echo off the walls. As the eyes approach the dying fire, a massive snout comes into view and then a head the size of a car follows. Your eyes bug as you take in the scaly surface of a face, with ridged brows and a line of spikes running in increasing size from the tip of its snout up and over the back of its head. Two large horns protrude from above its brows and curve backwards towards where you assume its shoulders would be.
When its snout is a few inches from your face, you tremble as its nostrils flare and it inhales deeply. Then it exhales with a low rumbling sound as its hot breath fans across your face, blowing strands of hair off your shoulders.
ItâsâŚsniffing you!
You nearly jump out of your skin when a deep, inhuman voice booms through the cavern and you have to cover your ears from the sheer volume.
âYou are awake.â
The voice continues to echo off the walls for a few moments and then silence settles again, apart from the monsterâs deep rhythmic breaths and your pounding heart. Slowly, you lower your hands from your ears and realize, belatedly, that it hadnât moved its mouth when it spoke.
Had it projected its voice or are you just going crazy? Probably just going crazy.
âWhereâŚwhere am I?â you manage to stammer out.
âMy cave,â it rumbles again, softer this time, as if it realized its voice was too loud.
Oh fuck, you are going to die here, cold and naked in this cave.
Beginning to hyperventilate, you start to struggle in the grasp of its tail.Â
âPlease donât eat me!â you shout.Â
You need to figure out a way to get out of here!
It lets out a low, chuffing sound, which must be a chuckle and says, âI donât plan to eat you.â And before you know whatâs happening, its jaws part slightly and a giant, tapered tongue slips between massive, razor sharp teeth and licks up the side of your neck.
Shit, this monster definitely wants to eat you.
âWhy am I here?â you squeak, utterly terrified but trying to keep it talking in the hopes you can figure out an escape plan before it decides itâs done playing with its food.
âI wanted a pretty treasure for my horde.â
A pretty treasure?... Does he mean you?

Yummy little desert dragons, these overcomplicated SandWings are!
Like usual, Joy Ang and Tui are awesome, I've just added my own spice.
Details and explanation below.
Otherwise, next week are the RainWings - I think you'll really like them!
More overcomplicated dragons.
Where do I begin? I suppose with the elephant in the room: as a desert species, they need to be highly adapted to withstand the heat and control their body temperature, so I had tons of fun looking for references to use. Their sails would be used like elephant ears to cool off, by sending their blood into them to wave in the wind. Perhaps this would leave it tinted slightly red, perhaps not depending on the thickness of the structure. I chose backlighting for this piece to highlight the sail (the actual dragon isn't purple, it's just the contrasting colour of the shadows).
Speaking of the scales, perhaps you noticed the scales on the sail? I referenced basilisk lizards for this since their sails look pretty much exactly like SandWing sails, down to the folds and lines usually included in official artwork and fanart. In this piece the lines you see are actually the backlit tendons supporting the structure - based on frilled lizards, which you'll see again soon.
I also referenced pangolins (scale texture), thorny devils (the slight grooves on the sides of their temples that would direct rainwater into their mouths, and bearded dragons (for the little accessory spikes on the chin, mouth, eye ridge, and nose horn). The extra spikes on the mouth serve a double purpose to help rainwater pool and keep it from sliding past the mouth. Lastly, if you're curious about the extra dark points on its eyelid, those are slits in the scales to help it see in sandstorms. Camels have eyelashes but potoo birds have these slits which let them see even with closed eyes, which is important when the main weather you face daily is sand blowing in your face.
Again, imagine how creepy it would be to stumble upon what you think is a sleeping SandWing only for it to be wide awake and waiting for you to get closer... chomp!
